Reviews for The Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel
Review 1:Service , service, service was excellent! Everyone very friendly and efficient. Special thanks to David and Juan who were our waiters in the Lanai room on January 16. Please commend them. David even steamed our tablecloths and got us perfect vases. and special thanks for the newlyweds room upgrade... those things make a big difference! Brunch for our group and the waiters were very nice. One was an Iranian and the other I dont know the name but nice service. Great to have childcare and babysitting arrangements.
Review 2:We wanted to use our son's club membership but had booked through a 3rd party which didn't let this work out... phooey! Parking is a huge challenge.
Review 3:Beautiful at Christmas and heated pool was fun. Restaurant is fabulous and staff was helpful.
Review 4:My girlfriend and I are in a long distance relationship, so every time we get a chance to spend time together we have to make it count. She has been working 10-12 hours a day, six days a week for three months. I really wanted to give her the ultimate rest, relax, and recharge weekend. The Claremont and its staff delivered big time. Everything was perfect. The room was a standard queen, but we had the most amazing view, right from our bed. The tub inn the bathroom was amazing, the staff was on point every time we had any interaction. We can't wait for a special occasion so that we can stay here again.
Review 5:The resort was so large it took us some time to find the lobby since we parked near the tennis courts, which is about as far away from the lobby as you can be. Not the resort's fault, though. The rooms did not have any media capabilities, we had brought our own DVDs to watch, but unfortunately couldn't since there was no DVD player available, Blu-ray or normal. We had in room dining, we opted to leave the table in our room to not clutter the hallway. Took over two hours for pickup, so we ended up just leaving it in the hall. As we left, we had trouble finding the box to drop off our parking key card. I had to park on the street so I could get out and look. I expected a little slot to slip it in, or a more prominent box. I saw some key cards on top of a box attached to the security booth and assumed I was to leave it there.
Review 6:Staff was very accommodating and understanding. Alex gave us a tour and answered any questions we had, letting us off at the elevator lobby. We requested a bath tub but never really got a response, when we arrived there was no bath tub. I notified the front desk and that if it was possible, we would like a room transfer. Amanda put us in a room satisfying our request at no extra charge and we were very pleased! Food was great, we ordered in room dining. Delivery was prompt and courteous. Checkout was quick and easy! We reviewed our bill and no wonky charges were stated. Everything was very clear.
Review 7:Paid a premium for a large room with a view. The view was great but I had to keep the curtains closed much of the time I was in the room as I felt that people walking to and from the exercise facility could see into the room from the walkway.
Review 8:Staff very friendly and helpful. Location perfect for me visiting family in the area, good proximity to restaurants and shops in Berkeley and Oakland. Very quiet, clean and comfortable room. Room I selected spacious. Furnishings very nice. Didn't take advantage of spa treatments but exercise facility very nice. Rained while I was here so couldn't take advantage of the lovely pool area. Overall excellent experience.
Review 9:Renovations still in progress. On the surface the facelift of this grande old dame looks impressive but it's all cheaply done. We were given a room on a lower floor with a bay view (of the parking lot) below the restaurant- and it was outrageously noisy so we switched to a room in the west wing on a higher floor. There was still lot of noise from above and in hall. It seems Fairmont rep is a thing of yesteryear. I certainly won't be going back.
Review 10:The best part was the friendly staff.
Review 11:Under construction. The heater was noise and didn't work our first night. Bathroom floor was cold. Bath tub was too tight.
Review 12:Location was good, nice view !
Review 13:The restaurant was being renovated but thats not a dislike. We just wished it was open.
Review 14:This was for my parents to visit and go to the ballet in SF. The fairmont is stellar. The hotel is a fantastic icon and if you want to be close to family in Berkeley and close to the city, stay here. I think the pricing was reasonable considering its a Fairmont. My parents loved it.
Review 15:We had a lot of trouble exiting the parking lot with our cardkey (Dec 15-18). I understand it was being worked on; some signs at the gate to direct us to use call button would have been helpful
Review 16:Lovely property, attractive and comfortable renovation, and reasonable cost.
Review 17:Unwelcoming, cold redo of a once cheery and classic Victorian hotel. Window blinds broken, coffee machine broken, no coffee or even cups provided. Unexpected charges and surcharges for restocking mini-bar, self-parking, etc.
Review 18:Excellent staff, doing their best in dealing with ongoing construction and poor management.
Review 19:The staff was fantastic! Their attitudes, courtesy, and professionalism when dealing with me and my wife was impeccable! We will surely come back to the Claremont Hotel on our next trip to Northern Cal.
Review 20:Housekeeping did not come the first day. Overall room cleanliness lacked attention to details. Room service hours are too limited. Bloody Mary at upstairs bar was undrinkable. We had a view of the HVAC system and the garbage truck drop off must have been just behind us. Room was noisy and stuffy. One window opened 3 inches.
Review 21:Night shift staff was very helpful Food in restaurant was very good but a bit overpriced.
Review 22:The design of the carpet, rooms, I liked everything.
Review 23:The hotel has been my favorite for 15 years. It really needed renovation. It is so beautiful now after some work has been done. Really beautiful. I look forward to my next stay.
Review 24:Rooms still undergoing renovation, a bit small for the money, would like a bathtub, not just shower, and resurfacing of the room door (inside) was peeling away.
Review 25:Truly a signature property, best views of SF bay
Review 26:It was my Granddaughters 7th Birthday. She has wanted to come to the "White Castle " since she was 3 your staff did everything in their power to make it a princess dream come true. What extraordinary people to go out of their way. thank you to Elizabeth and Chase. We will never forget the extra steps they took.
Review 27:The basic price of the room, i.e. without the extra for the view, was higher than other hotels in the Oakland/Berkeley area but there were surprising missing things: no ice bucket in the room and no extra blankets (there were no blankets on the bed, just sheets and the bedspread).
Review 28:The view from our room was fantastic, paid extra for a room with a view and it was worth it! In a very good location for us, a few blocks from where we used to live and the friends we were visiting. Very large room.
Review 29:The room was not ready when we arrived and after a hour they gave us a different room on a lower floor. Not really the view we hoped for but ok. The phones and tv remote didn't work.
Review 30:The spa is nice and the restaurant is great.
Review 31:I was given the wrong room (smaller and not the view I paid for), next to construction-and the representative that I spoke with to fix the issue, was the rudest I'd ever met.
Review 32:Nothing
Review 33:The construction noise. I understand it's a high end property, but the fees are outrages. I had about 300 dollars in just fees for 3 nights.
Review 34:It is a gorgeous property. It is under construction many halls are marked off by plastic.
Review 35:major renovation and half of the hotel under construction. Nothing that warned about this. As a result, 1 restuarant and no lobby.
Review 36:staff was helpful and friendly
Review 37:Construction was ongoing during our stay and I felt that they should have informed us of that at booking. Also, the walls must be paper thin, the entire night we could hear carts being rolled above us. Lastly, their bar/lounge area is very small.
Review 38:Great breakfast restaurants within walking distance
Review 39:The menu at the Meritage is way overpriced. Food preparation is indifferent. Thirty-five dollars for a basic bacon and egg breakfast? that is way out of line.
Review 40:I needed a quiet room to work. That's exactly what I got. The hotel is undergoing renovation, but I managed to tune out the noise of construction during the day. Night was fine.
Review 41:The hotel is under construction and we literally had a work crew on top of us during the day. Sheets of plastic, plaster falling down in the hallways. It's a mess. Service was only okay. Restaurant for dinner was good.
Review 42:Rooms are a bit old, but are under renovation. The main spaces of the hotel are under renovation as well, so was a bit strange with the makeshift lobby, etc.
Review 43:The facilities were nice and the hotel did pretty well at using what spaces were not under renovation.
Review 44:For being a suite, the bathroom could have been better updated. The sink drained really slow and the toilet reminded me of something in a public bathroom.
Review 45:The view from our room was great!
Review 46:Construction. We love the bar with a View of the bay, but it was closed for renovations as was the grand lobby. Made the trip less enjoyable.
Review 47:Great views of the bay. Nice staff.
Review 48:Two things-My room -703-was below the restaurant. Moving furniture late at night kept me up. My parking was credited after I mentioned it. I left a pair of shoes in the room; 2 calls to housekeeping were not returned. I had to call a 3rd time and ask for a supervisor. The shoes did not turn up and I am 99% sure they were left there unless someone working for Southwest opened my suitcase and took a pair of Tevas. I doubt that.
Review 49:The room was lovely and spacious.
Review 50:The hotel is undergoing major a renovation program (all 270 rooms are being renovated as well as lobby area and restaurant area) with a lot of nuisance for the clients, elevators not functioning, noise, dirt, back door reception area, certain restaurants closed, etc.. Not the grandeur, quality and service as we have the right to expect and as a result a lot of complaining clients at the reception all the time. Absolutely not worth the price at this moment. Staff promises the hotel will look nice after the renovation will be finished in 3 months, but that is poor consolation for the current clients. The renovation has been going on for several months are they are now half way. With its location the hotel is normally the best option in town, but I was disappointed. Hotel should have been proactive and communicate better about the inconveniences and renovation and compensate the clients for it.
Review 51:Ongoing renovation cramped our ability to explore the hotel, room needs HD cable and Pac 12 Network to watch the Golden Bears! And wife needed a new room robe as first one had a stain on it (staff responded immediately)
Review 52:Staff was awesome! We stayed in a recently renovated room, which was splendid. Room view was spectacular, spa was great, wonderful place for our 24th anniversary.
Review 53:"Steerage", not a "Junior Suite". "Suite" Nothing could have been farther from the description. Along the marathon hike and 2 elevator changes from the front desk, we were told of our newly renovated suite by the bellman en route. He could have done a book report on "War and Peace" in the time it took to walk there. I found a black gum sock on our carpet upon first entrance. This tells me my room had not been vacuumed or the sock would have been found. The ancient receptacles would not hold a charge cord either. Very amateurish...
Review 54:The restaurant, fare and service were very adequate.
Review 55:I liked the location and the visit to the spa and gym. I was not expecting to walk through construction. There was a constant mechanical generator hum that prevented restful sleep.
Review 56:We were unaware there was no air conditioning in the room. The temperature hovered between 78 and 80 degrees. It was difficult to sleep.
Review 57:The staff was very helpful. And the room was comfortable.
Review 58:Hotel was being remodeled.. I'm sure it will be nice when its done but greatly detracted from our stay. Also, the bookings price ended up being only ⅔ of our final cost due to hotel parking fee, spa fee, and local tax.
Review 59:Swimming pool and spa attached are great!!
Review 60:Although the hotel is under construction for renovation, we were very comfortable and not bothered by noise or dust. Staff went out of their way to be helpful. Pool and club were very pleasant.
Review 61:under construction, poor room lots of noise fire alarm going off early morning construction issue, poor parking no lighting hard to find check in area, old elevators poor heating.
Review 62:nice bed
Review 63:lost of constructions in the building. Fire alarm went off early morning. main lobby was closed off and we had to walk through many hallways to get to our room. very overpriced and bad coffee/espresso in the restaurant.
Review 64:beautiful property with great staff. they even sent a nice birthday chocolate to our room when they found out we are celebrating my husband's late B-day. nice spa and jacuzzi facilities.
Review 65:the hotel has been in need of renovation. It is tired. Rooms are dated, especially bathrooms. Only one of three elevartors was working and this continued for at least two days.
Review 66:very pleasant staff great health club/spa facility
Review 67:They should just shut down while they renovate it was the worst hotel experience ever
Review 68:Nothing all I heard was drilling and banging and my room smelled like mildew and old
Review 69:The lights flicker on and off but since room was just redone, they probably needed to work out the kniks
Review 70:we stayed in a renovated room, which is just beautiful.
Review 71:The hotel is currently under renovation. I requested a room that had already been renovated but I did not get one. Everyday there was a trail of dirt, debris from the construction on the stairs. I was surprised that no one had vacuumed. I did not feel like the hotel was a good value for the room price plus daily activity and parking. The hotel is in need of the current renovation.
Review 72:I chose this hotel for the pool for my son. I liked that the pool was truly a heated pool. I did appreciate that there was the option to self park rather than valet but you are charged the same price. The staff are friendly. The views are pretty awesome on a clear day.
Review 73:The hotel was undergoing renovations, which prevented us from taking advantage of the views one would normally see from the ground floor balconies. The Claremont normally has spectacular views of the bay. Sorry we missed it during this visit.
Review 74:Exemplary service. The resort amenities were great (whirlpool, sauna, heated pools). The staff were truly very accommodating and helpful.
Review 75:The hotel is currently undergoing a major renovation and you will see a lot of construction around the hotel. The staff does a great job working around this. I was fortunate to get a renovated Jr. Suite room and it was beautiful with an amazing bed and new rain head shower and full separate bath tub.
Review 76:we were not notified of construction taking place, bulldozers above our heads all morning!!!! the room had a musty smell the outlets in the room did not have three prongs, could not use my computer
Review 77:closet space was plentiful the bed was just ok staff is friendly took off some fees but they should have refunded the whole night. restaurant(only one available since Paragon was under construction)was good but expensive and no other choice
Review 78:I was a little concerned, after making the reservation, to discover that the hotel was undergoing renovations, but this didn't inconvenience me at all. All the facilities I needed/wanted were available & the staff were especially nice & helpful. A special shout out to Scott who chatted with me and helped with my Lyft ride at the end of my stay. I hope to come back again soon. Thank you!'
Review 79:Airconditions didt work, there was renovation at the hotel, which wasnt mentioned during reservation, they charge extra for facilities which we didnt use, this should be included in the price which is already high for berkeley standards.
Review 80:The staff were kind
Review 81:Very friendly staff. Renovations were underway, but staff went out of their way providing extras to make up for the inconvenience. Easy walk to Berkeley Greek theater for concert.
Review 82:there was building work going on we were aware of this but not the extent occurring during our stay
Review 83:location and views use of the resort club facilities
Review 84:Room was quite small, bed not very comfortable & pillows were awful. The air conditioning needs a little help. I don't think the overnight stay is worth the money.... Next time we might just come for the pool :)
Review 85:The pool is one of the BEST parts of the facility!! Grounds are beautiful. Location is awesome & the actual structure is stunning.
Review 86:Unfortunately they are doing major remodeling which i did not know about prior to arriving. My room was under the construction - they moved me to a different room, which was less noisy but still loud. They did compensate for the inconvenience on my bill which was nice. The nice restaurant Paragon was also closed. For the price, it was not worth the stay. But typically it is a good hotel to stay at.
Review 87:Majority of the staff was great. Valet gave good directions to a few requests I had. Bell service was attentive, however, he recommended that we get a larger "Wine bucket" for a bottle of wine I brought with me but room service never brought it even after I called to check on it. I made do with the standard bucket.
Review 88:Again majority of the staff I encountered were very pleasant, engaging and helpful. the pool/spa was excellent. Converted to Salt water and the water felt great and the hot tub was wonderful
Review 89:This hotel is under heavy construction and not telling anyone about itwhile still charging full-Pop 5-star rates. Only 1 restaurant opened andclearly under-staffed. This place used to be great. Not right now!!You'd be better staying at a holiday inn.
Review 90:Location is great!
Review 91:very small room. very poor view from window. no refrigerator. no continental breakfast. nickeled and dimed by additional fees.
Review 92:staff courtesy. public rooms.
Review 93:The hotel is under renovation- seems like a skeleton staff, and sub-par service with some exceptions. Hard to believe they've been bought by the Fairmont. Incredibly old blankets, tired decor in room.
Review 94:Bell desk very professional. Proximity to amenities.
Review 95:The property was rather run down (shade was broken in our bathroom),they were doing major renovations which were not mentioned in thebooking. Definitely not worth the price. Charged a resort fee and aparking fee (parking fee was waived when we complained).
Review 96:The food in the Meritage restaurant was very good. The view from ourroom was lovely (paid a premium for the view though...)
Review 97:It was over-priced - there were additional costs such as mandatory "facilities" that included wifi which I would note have requested and that made the stay far more expensive than I expected. The staff were supercilious - as though the guests were somehow beneath them. There was construction going on which is presumably why the room was a "bargain"
Review 98:The location is beautiful and the hotel is a historical gem
Review 99:The beds in our room were too short. My husband is 6'5 and had to sleep at an angle.
Review 100:The staff was wonderful and very friendly. The food was great as well.
Review 101:Was not told the room was handicap accessible - which made for an awkward bathroom for two to share. Limited window/light/no view. Expensive for an otherwise simple room - especially given hotel was under construction.
Review 102:Beutiful building with history. Lobby lounge was pleasant. Appreciate easy parking. Quiet.
Review 103:Our "room with a view" was just a view of the tennis court. Not worth the extra money paid. And asked for a higher room level, and got the level one below the lobby. I don't understand how a room with a view is a room only 2 stories up. Wasn't at all what was expected of them. Everything is overcharged.
Review 104:Way overpriced for the quality of life while staying here. We got two desserts brought up and a large bottled water the first night- it was $68. Two breakfasts in the dining room cost $80 with a reasonable tip. Nothing is within walking distance, and the tv was cheap and fuzzy. We had to reload the very expensive pay per view movie twice because the service kept going offline. Overall so very disappointing for almost $500/night.
Review 105:The history of the building
Review 106:Felt the rooms were large enough to hold queen beds. Haven't slept in a hotel with doubles for years
Review 107:The atmosphere, the pool, the workout facilities. Loved the history of the building.
Review 108:Limited spa hours. I worked the entire time spa was open 9-5. I stayed there to use spa. Disappointed so I went to The Club to use hot tub. Pathetic excuse for a hot tub.
Review 109:Historical architecture.
Review 110:The extra charges we were not aware of that got tacked on after we stayed like facilities fee that included a wifi charge.
Review 111:The bed was very comfortable.
Review 112:Rooms need a touch up. Not entirely clean. Peeling paint, mossy smell. I've stayed in this hotel several times and quality keeps slipping.
Review 113:Beautiful building with old grandeur; fantastic view of Bay area; great sports facilities and handsome public spaces. Good location for UC Berkeley.
Review 114:Facilities sometimes old and wearing out. Elevators either not working or stuck, A/C noisy and rained water on clothes. Soundproofing poor. One could hear lots of noise from hallways and adjacent rooms.
Review 115:Staff excellent.
Review 116:The room had a old run down feeling, paint was chipping from the coffee table, tape holding together blinds in the bathroom. For the price I expected everything to be kept up. And self parking (in the nose bleeds section) cost $30 per night.
Review 117:The old style is stunning, the views are amazing.
Review 118:Great staff. Not only was they attentive and super friendly, but they remembered our name and, because of ongoing conversations, our activities throughout the day(this is in reference to the valet, bell and front desk staff). Excellent food offerings in both restaurants also as well as the attentiveness of the staff again. Just a very good overall experience and we will stay again.
Review 119:Nightmare to drive to the airport because of the traffic. Lobby packed with Mothers' Day revelers. Very pricey.
Review 120:Staff was very helpful. I've never seen such a helpful, enthusiastic concierge. Desk checker said we had to pay for services we had no time to use. Upon checkout she waived the fee. Very friendly. View from slanted windows toward the Bay were awesome.
Review 121:Needs a new paint job on outside of building, which could be spectacular but is looking a little worn.
Review 122:Great staff and service. Beautiful property. Perfect location.
Review 123:Nothing much, it's just not a new hotel, so certain "old-fashioned" things or the smell may be annoying to those who don't like such style
Review 124:You feel history of this place in everything. Amazing hall and dining rooms, cozy rooms and tennis center, fitness clubs and SPA... you feel like you are a dear guest to the staff. I felt like an old movie star :)
Review 125:Dinner was just ok - a little too pricey for the quality. Not really worth the USD 30 price per entree (plus 22% for room service). Also we had to pay for resort fee - we did not get to use them because spa closes early on sunday night and opens at 11am the following morning. We were exhausted from our wedding the say before, so we did not use pool either. And also had to pay USD 30 for overnight parking.
Review 126:We are locals and used the Claremont as our mini-honeymoon - so we did not get to hang up on prices. Great room, great views. Breakfast food was great. Relaxing time.
Review 127:It was cold sitting outside but worth it to me for the ambience. (would have been a plus to have lap robes provided) I had booked a king bed bayview but got a room with 2 queens. While I had a bay view, it was from a recessed room on 2nd floor and I had rooftop view below me, as well as view of the adjacent wings windows. It wasn't bad, just not a grand as I had envisioned. You definitely hear people come and go from their rooms and their conversations when they return to their rooms. But bed was comfortable, I was tired and they eventually got settled in for the night, so I had a great night's sleep.
Review 128:Getting to be in historic hotel in town that my grandparents and elder relatives were from They would have been teenager when property first opened and my visit was to retrace the memories of my childhood stays with them in their nearby home. Having a view of the bay bridge and stars while dining al fresco was lovely. I liked using the whirlpool and spa as well as the fitness facility on location to take Zumba. There was a very well scheduled group activity program at the club.
Review 129:I booked a King room and there was no King available when we arrived. It took a 10 minute walk and 2 elevators to get to the room (weird location for guest rooms). The spa and pool ameneties were so far away from our room we would have had to drive to access them.
Review 130:I met Jimmy Herring, the greatest guitar player in the world. The rooms were spacious and the hotel itself was beautiful.
Review 131:Expensive; in the end we paid 60$/night more than what it showed here on the website.. Making the room really not worth it..
Review 132:Its a Nice hotel; the Paragon bar and the Meritage Restaurant are awesome; the pools are really cool & good.
Review 133:Only thing I didn't like was the long walk (part of it outside, which was quite chilly) to the fitness area. But nothing can be done about that!
Review 134:The beautiful lobby and public spaces, well-equipped fitness rooms, comfortable guest room, complimentary coffee. A first-class hotel. A great experience!
Review 135:Amenities in room lacking. No slippers. One bathrobe. Old. Misplaced furniture, lamps and minibar. Far too many people there for meetings and functions giving off a commercial feel to an historic hotel.
Review 136:Elegant structure celebrating one hundredth year wonderful view of the bay and city.
