Reviews for Rose Garden Inn
Review 1:Price increase for next stay in March
Review 2:Comfy beautiful ambience in common areas & LOVELY gardens great water pressure BATHTUBS hot breakfast perfect convenient locale
Review 3:The bed was seriously uncomfortable; lumpy and too soft. Had to sleep on the far side of the bed where it wasn't so broken down.
Review 4:Beautiful gardens, even in winter! And, the B&B is in a great location; close to UC Berkeley campus, nice restaurants, shopping.
Review 5:We were in room 603 I believe right by the front door and therefore it was a bit noisy from guests talking and coming in and out. We liked the room overall though.
Review 6:Great location and very comfortable.
Review 7:my room wasn't cleaned/ready when i arrived at 4pm......no parking available....given another room that had a moldy acrid odor to it.....shabby and poorly maintained building......uncomfortable bed.....plastic flowers and polyester bedspread/blanket.....very noisy at night, light from lobby showing all around the door....yucky old bathroom with old rubber bathmat, hairs on the bathmat.....overall the room very smelly and uncomfortable, would not stay here again
Review 8:some of the staff very friendly and helpful
Review 9:The property is an inn that is one step above a hostel. The walls are paper thin and the updates/maintenance look like a beginner home improvement person made them.
Review 10:The linens were clean.
Review 11:While it didn't bother us, I think someone who was disabled might have a little trouble at the Rose Garden. The floors in our room were not completely even, and had steps up and down between sections of the room. Most rooms are on upper floors with no elevators. And light switches were in odd places. So if you have any mobility problems or tend to trip, make sure you ask them about disabled access.
Review 12:I was bowled over by this place. We were expecting less because dead of winter is not usually the time to stay at a place named after its rose garden; but despite not being blooming season, the garden was really charming. The hotel consists of a couple of Victorian style homes put together and surrounded by a garden. Our room included a sitting room and a lot of old world charm. It had the toilet, sink and bath all separate in the old European style, and I liked that too. The lobby had a relaxing sitting room with sofas and a coffee table with magazines to read, clustered around a working fireplace. The lobby served free coffee and tea all day. The room came with a full breakfast in the dining room, which was excellent. The staff was extremely professional and friendly. Free parking was also a plus.
Review 13:Excellent staff were very helpful. The hotel has lots of character which I much prefer to the generic hotels where everything is the same and are expensive. Lots of areas inside and out to relax. Great location.
Review 14:Two suggestions. 1. My room needed better lighting. I had to have all the lights on in the daytime. 2. The breakfast is below par for what we pay and a disaster for vegetarians.
Review 15:I loved the fact that this inn is so charming, clean and comfortable. The staff too were friendly and helpful.
Review 16:Theyhave a good breakfast There are all the these hidden fees. Had to pay extra for a fridge. Then when I checked out they charged 200 bucks for linen? What the hell? I would not recommend them.
Review 17:The room was smallish but we were in the most basic option, and it was very good value; ensuite bathroom was roomy, great shower (but very noisy toilet flush!).
Review 18:A really quaint building, with great character unlike most hotels. Lovely to have the entrance sitting area with fireplace and all the Christmas decorations. Breakfast was very good and included in the room rate. We made a late booking and got a really great rate, making this excellent value. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Public areas and room were immaculately clean.
Review 19:They could use a new toaster - or maybe have two.
Review 20:The staff was so helpful during this very busy travel time. The breakfast was delicious. The grounds are interesting and have lots of seating areas.
Review 21:There was no half and half to add to our coffee in the breakfast dining room. That was disappointing. If it were my facility, I would purchase a cheap stereo for the dining room, to warm up the atmosphere, with some classical music.
Review 22:Beautiful,clean and cozy makes you feel warm and welcome and awesome breakfast every morning.A pleasure to recommend this place, forward to book this place again.
Review 23:What's not to like. A charming suprise!
Review 24:Amazing place!wonderful staff and really good breakfast. It was a last minute booking and I had no idea what u was geting. Next time I will plan for it and enjoy!
Review 25:indifferent staff-entire facility was underheated during a cold spell.breakfast room was cold as was the food.Onsite parking insufficient;ended up on the street.
Review 26:good bed
Review 27:No elevator. Stairs everywhere. Rooms were a mix of updated and old. Which is not really a big issue but is noticeable. Parking can be a real issue if you need to leave vehicle on street during day. There are street parking rules and the parking lot is grossly inadequate. Towels were not replaced during one day of my visit
Review 28:Rooms clean. Breakfast was good. Staff excellent.
Review 29:Decor. Rugs and bedspreads outdated .. Gave me bad allergies But we still liked it a lot!
Review 30:Friendly staff and being able to open our window.. Quiet area
Review 31:We needed to stay near Berkeley during Thanksgiving. The decor of the four or five old houses is pretty funky, but the room was clean, and the location worked well for us. The groupon deal made it well worthwhile considering the outrageous prices other hotels were asking. We were given a room with a fireplace (not asked for) which turned out well because it was especially cold. We had a view out one window of the Berkeley hills and could see towards the Bay to the west. The breakfast is adequate but not special. We'd stay there again as long as the prices were discounted.
Review 32:Lack of variety of breakfast. Boring if you are there 6 days. No yogurt. Bananas very mature. Bread mediocre.
Review 33:Friendliness of Shiloh, the manager and of the staff.
Review 34:could hear neighbors through the wall. no microwave in the room.
Review 35:quaint, unique location, comfortable room, full breakfast, security gate, artwork, firm mattress, homey feeling, diversity of occupants (age, ethnicity, etc), good internet access and TV reception.
Review 36:Room is SOOOO old and the facilities haven't been updated, for 50 years. It's what gives the place character but of course that's it's downside too.
Review 37:Old hotel or rooming house full of remarkable character. Lush gardens with kitschy statues and serpentine Victorian interiors. Near some fabulous restaurants and very well located. Breakfast was very good and the staff were incredibly helpful.
Review 38:Some of the back stairs to our room were in desperate need of repair.
Review 39:Great breakfast and very nice staff. Beautiful gardens and landscaping. Love the flowering trees and roses.
Review 40:Very musty in room. Needed to keep window open to have fresh air. Bed too close to wall for two people. Hotel could use a bellman to help with luggage for 3rd floor. Whew!
Review 41:Rooms were unique. View from the balcony queen room was beautiful. Room was larger than expected
Review 42:The floors, stairs were in a bad shape and the fact that I asked ahead of time for a earlier check in than 3pm but didn't get that. They should close this place
Review 43:The location was convenient and close to where I needed to be. The gardens looked nice but dangerous to walk because of bad flooring
Review 44:traffic noise (close to 4 lane busy road)
Review 45:nicely decorated surroundings with mural paintings and flowers, comfortable chairs on secluded terrace. Good selection of restaurants nearby (Japanese, Chinese, Burmese, Korean, Nepalese, Ethiopean, even Swiss Fondue...)
Review 46:poor breakfast, bad light in the room, difficult to get fresh air in the roomI like the hotel and
Review 47:Friendly staff, nice clean hotel with a soul, convenient room
Review 48:We loved staying at the Rose Garden. We made a special request to check in an hour or so early to get dressed for a weeding and she went out of her way to make this happen. Our Suite (303) was lovely, clean and very roomy. Breakfast was huge. Everything seemed to be a little refurbished from the last time we went there with fresh paint, wallpaper, etc.
Review 49:Our room was in the oldest house and it was gorgeous. The King suite has two window seats that are, basically, twin beds. Traveled with friends for a Duran Duran concert at the Greek Theatre and we all slept comfortably in the suite. Hotel is within walking distance of the theatre and all of the fun shopping and restaurants. There is a beautiful courtyard to have coffee in and enjoy the day.
Review 50:The room we stayed in needed some maintenance in the bathroom (peeling paint, scruffy corners...) Parking spaces are limited but it is usually easy to find parking in the street for the night.
Review 51:Very well located, beautiful gardens, excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. The decor is nice.
Review 52:Room could be better cleaned and lighted. Towels were not replaced regularly. Kitchen did not have plates and cutlery for dinner
Review 53:Location and environment. Nice old style property
Review 54:Would rather have screens on all window for use of fans .. No air which was on .. Maybe some fresh sofa covers and lace drapes
Review 55:We loved the space of the room .. The courtyard and open feeling.. Location was great .. Staff very nice and the feeling of a little vacation cottage ..
Review 56:Really thin toilet paper, room was clean but dated. If you like a cooked breakfast you're in luck, cold breakfast was not very exciting.
Review 57:Big rooms, fridge and microwave, nice toiletries
Review 58:The hotel itself is in serious need of being refurbished. The hotel owner's intention may be to project an original and kitsch appearance, but the quality of the construction reflects a lack of permanent neglect hidden by an assemblies of decorums of mixed styles and genres. The TV was difficult to operate, and the bathroom had the charm of an old mansion setting.
Review 59:The Hotel is located in a lively but safe part of Berkeley on Telegraph Boulevard. There are quite a few bars and restaurants at walking distance from the Hotel. The hotel offers a good breakfast , free parking and Wifi.
Review 60:Airconditiong didn't feel like it was working
Review 61:Large room with nice accenting Real bathtub(w/ separate shower) Friendly staff Wonderful scenery filled with statues and flowers
Review 62:Looks a little seedy, down at the heels. Staff a little on the surly side.
Review 63:Cute place, convenient for us, great rate for this particular weekend, got a free upgrade without asking
Review 64:The long screws on the bathroom door, sharp side poiinting out. They are an accident waiting to happen.
Review 65:The whole experieince was quite delightful. Kevin at the front desk is terrific. He went way above and beyond the call of duty dealing with my family. He gave a wonderful tone to the whole experience.
Review 66:Not enough power outlets. I had to plug the laptop into the bathroom. The reno job on my room was well- meaning but dreadfully done. The room was cramped and too many patterns on the textiles made it feel smaller. The bathroom was adequate, but all sorts of cheap finishes were jammed together with rusty screws. If you lay in the bath and looked up, you saw some ugly sights. the paint job was all over the place. It had all I needed except the aesthetics! You could see they'd tried, but didn't quite make it. I also couldn't work out how to use the TV, but didn't bother to ask. I'm sure the staff would have shown me.
Review 67:Staff were very obliging and helpful. Pretty gardens around the buildings and ground floor common areas were welcoming. My room had a little balcony so I could have the door open for fresh air which was nicer than hermetically sealed modern buildings. I was reasonably comfortable.
Review 68:The place needs better Cleaning service.
Review 69:The garden is beautiful and rooms are spacious. One morning there was a lady playing the harp in breakfast room and it was pleasant surprise. Nice breakfast and good location for Cal.
Review 70:Very friendly hotel in great location for exploring Berkeley. Nice atmosphere - two period houses with discrete extensions and carefully tended gardens. Lovely breakfasts.
Review 71:I didn't have a bad experience. But there are a few things. The cleaning staff needs to understand about the towels and their reuse.(They changed them, even when I hung them over the shower rod(There was no towel rack in the bathroom, which there could certainly be). My room was the very front one on the first floor and it was noisy early in the morning with the set up for breakfast. I wonder if there would be a way to address the sound, perhaps by putting mufflers at the bottom of the door(and reminding staff to "keep it down" early in the mornings. And that room needs more light. Without the curtains open, it is far too dark. A good strong lamp by the bed is needed, one that can be adjusted for reading. (Actually on both sides of the bed)
Review 72:The Inn is charming, nicely appointed. I liked the garden furniture, and the look of another time. The woman who worked the desk on weekdays in the mornings was exceptionally helpful. As was the weekend morning woman at the desk. The breakfasts were tasty and on time. I appreciated the afternoon cookies, of which I ate too many!A
Review 73:The rooms were small which it make difficult to keep the luggage. No safe box.
Review 74:The gardens & general decoration together with the friendliness of the staff. And also the peaceful of the place
Review 75:The attitude of staff who didn't want to own their responsibilities. We checked into a room with very soiled toilet at night when the cleaning maid was off the work. We reported the dirty toilet to the front desk staff. The staff was nice enough to take pictures of the toilet. However, he not only didnt want to take the ownership of issue but also misconmmunicated the timeline someone would come to clean it. We ended up waiting for about 1.5hours till it's way too late into the night. Being tired of waiting because we needed to sleep, called the front desk again who was a staff for the new shift. This staff didn't want to take care of the issue either and told us to wait till the next morning to complain to the managers. I felt very discourage by the attitudes of their staff. The good thing was that the managers were nice to talk to.
Review 76:Location, furniture style and the layout of the property
Review 77:Our room was a hodgepodge of spaces with steps to bed. The layout was a bit of a hazard.
Review 78:The gardens were attractive and the architecture was interesting.
Review 79:The gate out front doesn't work with room card key. Needs to be fixed for security reasons.
Review 80:My twin sister and I stayed at the Rose Garden Inn because it was close to the hospital were our Lil sister had a baby. Very nice! 8 min walk to hospital. Great because we were there all morning lots of waiting, you know how hospitals are. We were able to go back and forth from hospital to hotel. Check out was noon. Perfect location for just that.thanks again!
Review 81:The facility is in desperate need of a major upgrade and infusion of money.
Review 82:Jeremiah was very helpful. He was very apologetic for the 3 flights of stairs when I asked for a room without stairs because of a disability.
Review 83:Room was a bit stuffy with only one small window. didn't give us new/clean glasses in the room, even though we were in the room for three days.
Review 84:Booking.com did not tell us we could not get connecting rooms
Review 85:We requested connecting rooms because traveling with our children. Booking.com never notified us that this was impossible because no rooms connect. They even had us staying in two separate buildings. Rose Garden out us in a two bedroom and charged us the price of one room and was very apologetic about the confusion
Review 86:Inside is dumpy. Our room had an outdoor (brass) light fixture in it, and it didn't even have the top on it, just a CF bulb sticking out the top. Plus, it smelled really bad inside. They had the backdoor propped open for some fresh air when we arrived.
Review 87:Beautiful property
Review 88:Troubled neighborhood. Policeman said I should not walk alone there. High crime, lots of druggies.
Review 89:Old World slightly Caribean feel. Breakfast. Close to UC Berkeley.
Review 90:This is a cute little place, but way over priced for what you get. The carpet was badly stained, and the unit is in need of some TLC. In the evening on a warm day the room was stuffy and musty smelling.
Review 91:The staff is very pleasant, check in/out very easy and the location is great. The spacious room was comfortable.
Review 92:We booked room with a balcony for Valentines Day. The clerk gave our room to another party and all they offered us was a slight reduction in cost...the room we had in its place was of a Motel 6 quality and they offered to drop the nightly rate by just a fraction or, as the manager said, "you can always find another place to stay, we won't hold you to your commitment." At checkout, they finally charged us only 115.00 for two nights, but chose not to tell us that until the weekend was ruined. In my one time experience, these people are not competent or capable.
Review 93:The location is fine, easy walking to UC Berkeley.
Review 94:The coffee. But, there's a great little coffee house across the street.
Review 95:This was the most delightful find! I had been holding out, only finding mainstream, boring hotel options in Berkeley on other travel sites. I only had one night at the Rose Garden Inn, but I intend to return with my husband and stay a little longer. Really sweet with a European feel.
Review 96:I stayed a second time and was equally satisfied as during my previous stay. Location within walking distance of UC Berkeley. Pleasant atmosphere. Excellent breakfast..One feels at home.
Review 97:I didn't like having to look at walls that needed patching up, the floor boards squeaked, the toilet needed plumbing maintenance, bathroom faucet was falling apart and limited parking on first come first serve basis, Just expected a little better for the price.
Review 98:The staff was helpful and friendly, easy check in and check out.
Review 99:-having to login to wifi every time my phone or iPad timed out. -very thin walls, which means you can hear EVERYTHING in the rooms next to you, and also those out in the hall.
Review 100:-architecture -good breakfast -free wifi -good location -the electronic key system
Review 101:Unfortunately, the beds were not very comfortable and the plumbing did not work as well as it should have. The sink drain was very slow and the shower had no pressure.
Review 102:Charming inn, bed and breakfast. The gardens were dormant but there's lots of outdoor space to relax in depending on the weather.
Review 103:Do not go here if you are looking for pristine appearance especially in repairs. You will see lots of poorly done repairs (too much grout, splotchy paint, tiles not lined up). Reminds me of work done by a self-taught handy man.
Review 104:Two main buildings are from the late 1800's and furniture reflects that era. Breakfast is excellent and coffee is available all day. Staff is very accommodating. You will feel very safe here. Decor is kind of kitschy and that adds to its charm for me. Rooms are also very quiet. Lots of spaces to gather socially or to relax quietly.
Review 105:Somewhat old. Expensive. Fair walking distance to university anddowntown.
Review 106:Fireplace in room. English style breakfast may be appreciated by many, but I am all for continental European type of breakfast with rolls, coldcuts, yogurt and plenty of fruits.
Review 107:Room hadn't been updated for many years. No stopper in sink, sink cabinet not attached to the walls, poor quality flooring in bath, painting poor.
Review 108:Good breakfast and friendly staff. Room size was good but quality of decorations inferior.
Review 109:For a half a day they were doing extremely loud maintenance work on one of the buildings which diminished the "quiet getaway" we ha hoped for. When I brought it to the managers attention he was very apologetic and gave us a discount in the room rate for that day so we left feeling satisfied with the outcome.
Review 110:The room was cozy with a gas fireplace and mini fridge so we could stock up on snacks and picnic supplies. The hot breakfast also a treat. We also really enjoyed sitting out in the courtyard
Review 111:Limited parking Couch was old and beat up First impression-not sure what to make of it--but it grew on me
Review 112:Very unusual layout and setting-this is not the hilton Big room Fireplace in room Excellent breakfast Grows on you Friendly staff Fridge and microwave in room
Review 113:We were forced to close our windows in the morning because of fumes coming from the kitchen downstairs. Busy street out front and B&B is across the street from a school that is quite noisy during school hours. Parking, though free, is limited and not always available.
Review 114:Excellent Berkeley location near BART and downtown restaurants and shops. Good, though Identical, breakfast served both days. Large room, which was oddly shaped.
Review 115:Bathroom was outdated, strangely small tub/shower Thin walls Ceiling fan didn't work and no A/C- probably not usually an issue in Berkeley, but there was a heat wave when I was there in early October
Review 116:Great location Cute room decor Pretty outdoor area Nice to always have coffee and hot tea available, and cookies in the evening Nice breakfast Easy parking Friendly staff
Review 117:I had a small room in the inn and it seemed a bit pricey. I felt squished even though I spent little time there.
Review 118:The down stairs was comfortable and the breakfasts were great.
Review 119:Nada
Review 120:Interesting 'faux' European inn (better than comparable stays in Europe). B&B experience in a budget hotel very near U of C & downtown. Nice, full breakfast. Furnishings were a mix of styles. LOTS of room. Cool little garden and grounds. Were we actually in Berkeley near Oakland? Felt like we were in the countryside somewhere. Great staff and fun people. Unless you want serious upscale go for this older real house and its flanking buildings. Character is more fun than swank, IMHO.
Review 121:The room we chose was much too small. Descriptions and sizes of rooms should be included in their website.
Review 122:Location is perfect. Staff is wonderful: friendly and efficient.
Review 123:Very quiet, lovely gardens, and great outdoor sitting areas. Breakfast was very nice each morning, and liked having coffee and tea available all day and evening
Review 124:many rooms are up quite a few stairs, hard work carring two 40 kilo cases for 69 year olds.
Review 125:good and plentiful breakfast, rooms spacious and clean. tv and bath and shower. pleasant gardens and out door tables.
Review 126:MY room was back to back with another on the 2nd floor of the Garden rooms. The wall between is so thin, I suffered through snoring, coughing, talking - as though it were in my room.
Review 127:Pleasant setting. Lovely garden. Very good breakfast.
Review 128:no elevator, hard to move luggage around in the facility; the smell in the reception area is terrible; parking facility is not enough, sometimes we have to park our car on the street (to pay in day time, and to worry in the evening)
Review 129:nice view on the top floor to see bay bridge ,golden gate bridge, and UC Berkeley; breakfast in the garden is nice too
Review 130:Receptionist was not very welcomng when we arrived. On arrival, we were offered the choice of an alternative inferior room to the one we had booked, with small twin beds instead of a double - all beds in one room and no lounge area. Sofa bed proved to be impossible to sleep on as the mattress was totally inadequate. Receptionist supplied an additional mattress, but still way too thin, so one of our party slept (comfortably) on the mattresses on the floor. Kitchen was very small and not well-equipped for cooking or eating.
Review 131:Spacious and nicely decorated rooms: Master bedroom/lounge separated from 2 doubles by curtained doorway. Hand basin in second sleeping area. Comfortable and attractively furnished lounge with 2 sofas. Receptionist was helpful when we had a problem with the sofa bed, did her best to provide what we needed and said she would report that the sofa bed mattress was inadequate. Good buffet breakfast included in the price.
Review 132:Breakfast could be improved: would be better to offer a wider selection of fruit (not just pineapple chunks every day) and a few more wholemeal products (i.e. wholemeal bagels, muesli, rather than just sugary white flour baked goods and cereals). Rooms were charming but need a bit of upgrading (e.g. we had an old carpet with a burn mark where someone had put down a hot iron). But on the whole these were very minor things to improve - I thoroughly enjoyed the stay.
Review 133:The patio and garden tables, the smell of blossoms in the garden, the tea and coffee available all day, the quiet rooms at the back (luckily we did not have a room on the street side which might have been less peaceful). The cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The seating areas and availability of newspapers and books. The location close to Berkeley but just far enough down Telegraph Avenue to be away from some of the seedier scenes. Great restaurants nearby in Berkeley (particularly Herbivore). Charming and quaint. Felt very at home and enjoyed the place, which is quite unlike the anonymous business and convention style hotels all around the area in Oakland and San Francisco.
Review 134:For me, location was a little too far from downtown and university. However, this meant less pedestrian traffic and much calmer setting.
Review 135:Staff was very helpful and friendly. My requests were responded to very quickly. My room and all public rooms were always very clean. Bed was extremely comfortable. I liked the gardens and murals and the Victorian style. Full breakfast buffet was included daily, along with 24 hr.coffee and tea. Free internet.Bus stops directly outside the inn.
Review 136:Wifi signal in the room was very poor. Had to go to the lobby/garden to have a reliable internet access
Review 137:Quiet and comfortable hotel Nice and quiet inner garden
Review 138:We had arrived on a warm (not steamy) day and were shown to a room which was the size of a shoe box (had to put the one suitcase we had on the window sill!) and was scolding hot with a miserable ceiling fan... The bathroom looked like it hasn't been renovated for 50 years and the water in the shower went from freezing to scolding, depending on who else was taking a shower next door.
Review 139:The staff is very nice and the breakfast is reasonable
