Reviews for Sand Castle Inn

Review 1:The staff was pretty indifferent,, the night clerk gave basic information the woman at the desk in the morning didn't even bother to glance up or say good morning, completely unpersonable.

Review 2:Small room but recently renovated and extremely clean, comfortable bed and pillows. Free breakfast is nothing lavish but a good start to a day though it would have been nice to have more than a six oz styrofoam coffee cup that didn't have a lid. I would stay again if I needed an inexpensive room to sleep and shower in.

Review 3:The plantation shutter was broken at one part and people could see in.light in bathroom was broken, however it was fixed when manager came

Review 4:It was close to Monterey Bay State University where we were attending my grandaughters graduate project

Review 5:Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Walking distance to restaurants and retail stores such as Target and Marshalls.Continental breakfast was basic but good for the price we paid.

Review 6:Like in most places, WIFI quality depends on where you are. Ask for the right room if you need it. Oherwise use 4g mobile which has good signal here.

Review 7:Very good standard motel. Good value for the price we paid. Nice staff. You are very close to Monterey and Carmel at less than half the price. We would book it again.

Review 8:Rooms are overprized for what they offer (small, chipped furniture, clogged bathtub...) and could use a thorough cleaning. Staff are not very friendly.

Review 9:Stained carpet and towels. The first room they put us in smelled like a moldy locker room. Thankfully they had s vacant room and moved us. The staff was good, but the hotel itself left a lot to be desired.

Review 10:Rates were hiked for an event weekend at Laguna Seca, so it was a lot for very little. Typical cheap hotel. Could have been worse.

Review 11:There's not much place for the suitcases, we placed them on the table.

Review 12:We have been in monterey for Laguna Seca Porsche Reunion and for that the location was perfect, just a 15 minute drive to the raceway and 10 minutes to cannery row in monterey :) The hotel is great for a short sightseeing trip.

Review 13:The room was smaller than we would normally get.

Review 14:Considering the room was pretty much a bare necessity room it was very clean and the staff were friendly, professional and helpful. The bed was clean and comfortable.

Review 15:I specifically asked the household staff to make the bed and especially give us clean towels. I left a generous tip. Nothing was done - the tip was still there. It was because we stayed two nights.

Review 16:Location was convenient

Review 17:For starters I had booked a room that said had a hot tub in it and wen I get there its a completely different room, it had mold on the walls and it was kinda dirty!

Review 18:The shower head was not screwed on tightly, so when I turned on the shower, water spewed from the connection all over the bathroom. What a mess! The person before me in the line to checkin complained of a musty room and wanted to change rooms, not a good introduction!

Review 19:The room was on the second floor, as requested,on a separate ell, so it was quiet. The motel was located near an excellent restaurant, the Gusto.

Review 20:There was a smell that permeated very strongly the moment we entered the room. I thought it might be cigarette smoke in a supposedly non-smoking room. It was a busy holiday weekend and apparently there were no other rooms available to move to. There was no discount or other accommodation offered for my discomfort. I am allergic to cigarette smoke and have a lung disease.

Review 21:Very convenient location with many good places of varying prices and variety of stores/shopping in general. Very close to wharf, beach, downotwn Monterey, etc

Review 22:Nothing comes to mind at this time

Review 23:Everything. I stay here quite often and everytime I am very satisfied with everything all the way around. All the staff is very friendly and helpful and patient.

Review 24:Not a sandcastle in sight, in fact this hotel is in the middle of an industrial estate away from the sea. Way overpriced, quite dour personnel and the worst "breakfast" we found anywhere on our journey

Review 25:Proximity to shopping complex which included Chipotle, Jamba Juice and Starbucks all family favourites

Review 26:furniture (dresser) had a missing drawer front, apparently ripped off and not replaced. Totally unacceptable! If the room isn't viable don't rent it.

Review 27:The location

Review 28:The hotel did a update but the work was done poorly and the fixtures and furniture was really cheep. The carpet had a iron burn and the bed was really old. The bathroom was not that bad pretty clean and newer. For the money this is more of a $80. with tax a night hotel room.

Review 29:The location is not to bad but nothing in walking distance.

Review 30:No complaints other then maids are really loud and aggressive. U can hear them outside of the room in the morning

Review 31:Bed was awesome. Room was super beautiful the most cosy beds amazing shower (water pressure could of been a little better)

Review 32:Bathroom fan didn't work, but was fixed promptly. TV guide couldn't be accessed on- screen due to programming issues with the cable.

Review 33:The location is ideal for our purposes. Especially liked the ground floor room to pull the car in, unload, right outside our door. Bed was comfortable, room clean, location quiet.

Review 34:The breakfast room was a little stuffing in the morning. At least have some air flow.

Review 35:The location was perfect. Close to CSUMB and going to Cannery Row.

Review 36:Not as advertised, wifi horrible, room smelled moldy, they should not do breakfast , no instructions on how to use jetted tub which was filthy. We couldn't wait to leave

Review 37:wifi is free but cumbersome and could have had stronger signal. our ios phones were fine but our "range impaired" ipad had to be linked via cellphone hotspot instead of wifi. the whirlpool bath (the big reason for choosing this place) had fewer curves and weaker bubbles than we wanted, but was ok.

Review 38:we found a large, clean room with a comfy king bed, wood floors, and a stone set whirlpool bath :) plus fridge and small attached freezer (not an ice cube tray job inside the fridge). breakfast was more than your simple continental - the a make your own waffle maker and hard boiled eggs were a nice surprise. staff was friendly.

Review 39:*not super clean. Brushing my teeth the first night I noticed little hairs in the sink. I definitely didn't shave. Kinda gross. I'm sure they clean every day, but not as thoroughly as one would like. * the neighborhood is a little sketch.

Review 40:Pros: *refrigerator and microwave in the room. *it's about what you'd expect for the price.

Review 41:The fridge did not work. There was hair trimmings left on the sheets. Huge water Stains on the chairs.

Review 42:The bed was actually comfortable. Pillows were comfy as well. The breakfast was good.

Review 43:The building is older structure, so you can hear guests in other rooms, especially upstairs walking around.

Review 44:Conviently located minutes from Monterey attractions and dining. Very close to the beach.

Review 45:The facilities are old and in need of repair. The bed was so old and soft that we had to sleep where your feet are and it was still so uncomfortable that we barely had 3 hours of sleep. The hair dryer was broken in both of the rooms and the staff was unresponsive and could not care. When asked how to get to the local college (1.5 miles away) the desk clerk had no idea how to get there. Friday night the place was full and there was a huge boat in the parking lot which blocked the majority of the parking lot. At 1:30am someone's car alarm clock not off and for the next hour and a half would go on and off- again no one from the hotel did anything. I would not recommend this place unless you don't expect to sleep or want a below average motel.

Review 46:Free wifi and good location

Review 47:The smell of bleach was more over powering than I have ever encountered. We had headaches for 2 days after we left even. We had leave and open windows for 5 hours to tone it down a little. Breakfast very disappointing and didn't serve until 7.

Review 48:It was a safe location.

Review 49:Even though the room had been renovated, the sink and faucet were loose. The lady at the front desk offered to look if they had a different room available but we declined and just dealt with it. No decaffeinated coffee or tea available.

Review 50:This was ok for an overnight stay during a road trip.

Review 51:Got back to room late, no parking left, had to park in street.

Review 52:Great location, easy access to Monterey. Clean, cozy, flat screen tv, microwave & refrigerator.

Review 53:Free wifi and free continental U.S. Phone calling from the room. Staff was friendly and courteous. The room was very clean and the bed was perfect for me. Lots of fast food restaurants nearby.

Review 54:just a problem that I reported upon my exit with the tub/shower spigot that only partially diverted water to the shower. Should be fixed for the next traveler.

Review 55:location, price, no noise, owner immediately replaced a non-functioning telephone, maid service, TV and free internet service.

Review 56:check out was at 11 no acceptations. made it hard for my family whom was waiting for me to get out of class. they ended up having to wait in our vehicle.

Review 57:My only complaint would be that there's not enough room in the breakfast area, but there's nothing to be done about that. At least there's plenty of breakfast.

Review 58:The bathroom is spacious and has convenient shelves. The king bed was a comfortable pillow-top mattress. The room was quiet.

Review 59:Our bathroom had mold on the ceiling, the window screen had been cut from someone breaking in and the blowdryer did not work at all.

Review 60:The staff was friendly and helpful, the breakfast wasn't bad. Bed was comfortable and clean.

Review 61:Rooms are extremely small.

Review 62:Great location relative to the general Monterey area - that is, there is easy access to Monterey, Pacific Grove, Laguna Seca Racetrack, Half Moon Bay, etc. Also there are plenty of amenities nearby including a couple of very good restaurants (e.g., Gusto and The Market).

Review 63:the breakfast was very not adequate to the room experience: the coffee and juice are cheap as well as the jam or muffins.

Review 64:the room was very clean, from the carpet to the bed and everywhere

Review 65:No coffee pot in room.

Review 66:Clean and tidy room. For this price very happy. Excellent service and nice breakfast. Few noisy people outside but did not ruin our sleep at all.

Review 67:They left a cup of who know what in the fridge that my 3 yr old decided he would try before we even knew it was there. The bathroom was moldy. The floors were disgusting. The bottom dresser drawer was missing and the furniture didn't match. They obviously don't show you pictures of this room on the website.

Review 68:The bathroom sink area was very small. Only warm water came out of the sink. The shower didn't have much water pressure. When we went down for breakfast at 8 am there was only one muffin left. Definitely not worth the $189. A night!

Review 69:Location

Review 70:Price is very low for what they offer so of course location isn't the best but really close to Monterey and Carmel by car

Review 71:Staff really nice and helpful Breakfast is really complete and good (fruits, eggs, cake, fresh waffles, etc.) Room is modern and comfy :)

Review 72:Very noisy, towels grimy, no coffee pot, no clocks, breakfast VERY minimum, muffins cut in half, mold in the bathroom shower!!

Review 73:Receptionist was very helpful/friendly & outside appearance was cheerful...

Review 74:You do need a car to get anywhere.

Review 75:Comfortable room with a good bed and hot shower. Friendly staff. Breakfast had eggs and bananas in addition to the normal motel gear.

Review 76:the breakfast facility is poorly equipped, but in there the wifi conncection was very well in opposite to my room.

Review 77:the location was in close walking distaince of all major things to see.

Review 78:This is our second time staying at the Sand Castle Inn and we were just as pleased. This time we arrived late, but they had an attendant waiting for us at the desk. Our room was very clean, comfortable and quiet. In the morning, the breakfast was simple but nice. Muffins, danishes, fruit, coffee, etc. The hotel is just a short drive from downtown Monterey and the harbor. We will definitely be staying here again. Thank you, Sand Castle Inn.

Review 79:no I haven't really no complaints about it.

Review 80:its a awesome place to relax. the bed and the pillows are very comfortable excellent.I received a great welcome from the staff.

Review 81:The room wasn't clean at all, full of hair in the bathroom, dust everywhere. The wi fi signal very weak, I barely could access the internet. The breakfast very poor as well, nothing really to eat there.

Review 82:The tv and lights were on timers to save energy. The lights were not that bad but the tv was a hassle. It would shut off after 2 hours and when you turned it back on it would be on default sound and station.

Review 83:Our room was on the top floor and made it possible for me to take pictures of the horizon since we had complete sunny days.

Review 84:Breakfast not great but about the same as most other places.

Review 85:Great place to stay when exploring the Monterey area. Small town by the beach. Really good wifi. The room had some nice little extras like a microwave, fridge and bath. Good value for money.

Review 86:This is an old hotel with crazy small rooms! Smelled old, carpet was dirty and there was moderate mold in the bathroom shower and ceiling. I would stay again if I had no other option because the bed was comfortable, but will not seek out this one again.

Review 87:Nothing really jumps out - for the price, excellent value.

Review 88:Liked that it was not in the mail street. They have taken the trouble to keep a nice garden, rail pots and generally a clean establishment. Did not see a pool. Straight shot to Monterey along Del Monte Rd. About 19 minutes away. Recommend this

Review 89:TV was not working. Small vanity and lighting not good for applying makeup. Toilet sits very low.

Review 90:Comfortable beds. Refrigerator and microwave. Adequate continental breakfast except hard boiled egg not fully cooked. Bathroom had new marble floor, looked like glass..

Review 91:Where it's located isn't much to look at but its really just a place to sleep and come and go while you visit. Proximity to shopping center is perfect for grabbing Starbucks, etc.

Review 92:This hotel is right across the street from the Sand City shopping center and is close to the freeway for going to Monterey. It's in the heart of town so there are no ocean views but rather this is a good value for a good nights sleep. Close to CSUMB and everything in area, nice rooms

Review 93:For a motel of this price, it is what you would expect. Breakfast isn't amazing, but there is coffee, pastries and a bit of fruit. Close to restaurants near by and only a 5 minute drive from Monterey

Review 94:Very poor breakfast. Area not kept clean. Only one container used for all who pour waffle batter--it is a mess! Hard boiled eggs not refrigerated. Cereal all over counter--no one cleans it up. Breakfast space totally inadequate. Front door to room does not open properly. Mold in upper corner of bathroom. Dresser drawers will not stay closed. Carpet long overdue to be cleaned. Sink will not drain. Another oddity: the paper holders containing the room key are re-cycled--very soiled. Appears to be family-managed but very inexperienced in hotel business!

Review 95:What keeps this property in business: location, location, location--next to Monterey. Room is way overpriced. Out of the Monterey area this room would go for $60.

Review 96:Punk TV set-up. Don't be late coming back at night...You might end up parking on the street. No amenities such as a pool (or) work-out area - important to some folks. Damaged items, but quickly fixed when pointed out to Manager. Doors need to have weather-stripping replaced. Disagree with other review touting Rm 119 - Drafty and looked like the door had been kicked in. I was quickly moved.

Review 97:Extra Friendly Staff and very Responsive Owner/Manager, Location OK, but a little more distance from what I required that I would have liked, Typical high rates during a 'big' week-end event (Not as bad as some, not as good as some), Breakfast better that average. Love the waffle maker. I have stayed at much worse when visiting Monterey. Need to try the restaurant next door- thumbs up.. Sit-down bench in showers a plus. Quiet.

Review 98:You can tell the family owners put a lot of thought into the rooms. The the toilet and shower are in a separate room from the sink and so that makes it more efficient for two travelers. The beds are made more like hotel rooms and there is a tissue paper dispenser more like a hotel room. The fridge is bigger than a mini fridge and there is even a microwave. The stay is more like a hotel but the price is that of a motel!

Review 99:it s not really in monterey, its more located in the industrial neighborhood

Review 100:that was actually the best breakfast i had for weeks in a motel. waffle, muffins, cereals, toast... all you need besides peanut butter.

Review 101:Loved how friendly the front desk girl was!! She was so friendly and helpful!! We were given a upstair room which didn't really work for us because we have a 2&4 year old. Our biggest concern was them running up and down the stairs or falling. The staff was so understanding and accomadated us and gave us a room downstairs with no problems! The only complaint was not for the hotel but for the guest upstairs they had little children who ran around all night long. But other then that it was worth the price and the facility was well decorate with flowers, we didn't have any problems nice place!!

Review 102:We couldn't get the WiFi.

Review 103:Loved the non-carpeted floor and new fancy tile job in the bathroom. Beautiful plantation shutters and bed linens added to the style of the room and made for a lovely stay. Quite surprised at how nicely appointed the room was.

Review 104:We had to ask for help with the TV because it didn't work, but it was fixed immediately.

Review 105:It was close to the freeway. It was very clean. The staff was very friendly and when we had a complaint they attended to it immediately. For the price on a weekend we couldn't have done better. It was only 15 minutes away from a wedding we went to in Carmel. Didn't realize how close Monterey and Carmel was from Sea Side.

Review 106:I had stayed here for 2 nights in room 119 which is a lower level corner room location , it was really peaceful and quiet sleeping here . this place is pretty new , the room was clean and the bed was comfortable with a flat screen wall mount t.v. , the bathroom is new and the showers have new marble tiles and the sink is new , everything works , it had air conditioning or heating . owners are very friendly and there was a friendly cute girl at the counter helping me check in , it was walking distance to many eateries like Lucky Roadside is right next door for $13 you get burger with fries , and their famous Cherry Bomb ice cream dessert for $8.75 or walk to Golden China restaurant for for a bowl of Sizzling rice Soup for a medium bowl size was $6.45 which was huge and like a meal by itself , I came to stay here so I could bike ride to the 17 mile drive , it was a fun stay thanks to Sand Castle Inn

Review 107:This motel is a great little gem just south of Monterey. The rooms are very modern inside and are very comfortable. We even had a little balcony off our second floor room. Breakfast is continental along with waffles. Limited seating for breakfast but adequate. Give this place a try!

Review 108:See above

Review 109:Room was surprisingly nice and comfortable. Hotel looks like a Motel 6 on outside with no pool, eating facilities or creature comforts. It is in quasi-industrial area and I would not walk around outside at night. Staff was friendly and very service oriented. Rooms prices were outrageously high $400 per night but it was car week. This is a place you'd expect to get for $65 or $70 a night. If you go to Car Week and can't get into hotels in Carmelor Monterey, this is better than anything else in Seaside. Don't go to Salinas.

Review 110:One male hotel employee talked down to me while at breakfast. I did not appreciate the tone that early in the morning. There was a lot of noise from other travelers both late at night and early in the morning.

Review 111:The location was great. The beds were super comfortable. The bathroom was super clean and appeared to have been recently renovated.

Review 112:Parking lot not very big, so had to park in the next door business parking lot. Prices were high too, but what do you expect being by Monterey. Wi Fi was slow. Breakfast mediocre.

Review 113:Rooms were nice and bed was comfortable. Liked that they mounted the TV on the wall. Shower pressure good and plenty of hot water.

Review 114:Didn't like that I wasn't offered a ground floor considering there was no elevator. Didn't like maid service knotted on door at 9:00 am - when check out was at 11:00.

Review 115:Room nicely updated. Very clean and very comfortable bed. Everything was available and worked properly.

Review 116:After getting a refund for the place we were supposed to stay at becauseit didnt comply with the booking, this was the last minute option wefound. Way too expensive for what it is. Like waayyy too much. Room isclean enough, bed is comfy enough, tv works. To get there you have todrive through a sea of car sales, which just ruins your experience ofthe whole town. Its miles from anywhere of interest, with a good deal oftraffic between it and the city. No pool for 224 dollars a night? Nextto a highway in auto town?

Review 117:Staff was nice, breakfast was good with waffles and tea and etc.

Review 118:Our room was very Dark- no clock-no coffee maker-free breakfast a joke-shower was in the tub that was in the bedroom-tub was old and worn out- If you want a no frills place fine-walk to beach 5minutes through town

Review 119:it had parking

Review 120:The location is very commercial. Have to drive to get to places to eat, etc.

Review 121:I was not expecting much, but upon entering the property you could tell that they took the time to maintain the building. Cute paint job, nice flowers all around, the rooms were clean and updated, the bathrooms were very nice with marble tiles...no complaints.

Review 122:I went to this hotel after attending a wedding in Carmel. It was more affordable than hotels in Carmel and I just needed a basic room to spend one night. The Sand Castle Inn provided me with a just that. Although there is nothing luxurious about it, it provided me with a clean, comfy, cute place to relax after a long day. I had no problem checking in late at 9pm. I also enjoyed their selection of complimentary breakfast pastries in the morning.

Review 123:The lobby had an overwhelmingly potent curry smell, which I would love in a restaurant not in a very small hotel lobby; the very same lobby that held the morning breakfast. We didn't stay long enough to experience continental breakfast with the curry odor. The hotel room was shockingly small and the paper thin walls and super rude partying neighbors made sleeping very difficult. Our parking spot was literally less than a foot from the bumper of the car. Neighborhood didn't seem super safe- bit it was close-ish to the beach.

Review 124:Kappy, the manager was great! Very helpful.

Review 125:Noisy fridge in the bedroom and an electric socket with a plug pin sticking out which was a safety risk.

Review 126:The room and its facilities were clean and comfortable. Sand Castle Inn is close to shops and restuarants.

Review 127:The lobby, which was also the breakfast room, had a very unpleasant smell. I also didn't like having to use the outside desk, passing my credit card and ID through a slot, to check in at night (we arrived after 10:00).

Review 128:Beds were comfortable and clean. Decent shower.

Review 129:My husband and I took a trip down to Monterey for our honey moon. We were pleased to see that the rooms and motel looked exactly as it did in the pictures, very clean. The location was great. 15 minutes away from all the attractions such as the aquarium, cannery row, and fishermans wharf. I also liked it because it was away from all the traffic and congestion. Quite, calm, and a relaxing place to stay. I would definitely stay there again.

Review 130:Booked a " deluxe" room, 500 sq ft. But at check in said that booking.com lists all the rooms that way on mistake.

Review 131:Rooms where clean and breakfast had hot items.

Review 132:Staff not so friendly. Poor 'continental' breakfast, no even some cheese. Very dirty rooms
