Reviews for John Yancey Oceanfront Inn

Review 1:Very pleasurable stay after a long day of travel from Ohio... everything was clean, comfortable and a great restaurant in walking distance across the road... will stay again!

Review 2:We found the mattresses to be less comfortable than actually sleeping on the ground, which we did on the night before we arrived for camping, so we did actually compare.

Review 3:The location was awesome, the sun was bright and the staff was as friendly as may be. You can save a lot of dough by getting grilling supplies from the grocery and cooking your dinners outside, paired with the robust breakfast it's the best deal.

Review 4:I feel like I was overcharged. My brother in law stayed at the Ramada for 69.00 for a king size bed. Was not given the pass word for wifi. I called the office no answer. I will not stay there again. Not told where I could get coffee. Just a bad experience.

Review 5:The $20 pet fee was a little bit of a surprise since we're traveling with our dog for the first time. We've since found that that fee varies tremendously and it's often difficult to determine it before checking in. The check in clerk was pretty brusque and clearly not enjoying her day.

Review 6:Nice basic room, clean and reasonable. Good to have a kitchenette. The continental breakfast was good, and the beach was fabuous.

Review 7:Very clean. Quiet. Staff was very kind and welcoming. When we had to cut our trip short, the young gentleman that checked us out was extremely professional and courteous. Thank you

Review 8:Loved the tile floor in the room, however, they need to leave a broom so that you can keep the floor clean of sand. Not sure if the maid swept everyday.

Review 9:The area and the friendliness of the ppl who work there.

Review 10:Beds weren't real comfortable, and the hotel is older so the faucets on the tub were a bit iffy.

Review 11:Loved the location, beach access, pool, amenities. Water pressure and hot water was great. It was clean with no odors. More pluses than con's.

Review 12:The room smelled of Clorox so strongly that when we got there it was sooverwhelming it took your breath away. I think it made me sick becauseI felt fine before I arrived it was only after staying a few hours inthe room that I started feeling sick. Because of this I had to leave aday early and when I asked for a refund and they said they were unableto do this for me. They told me they could only put the money towardsanother reservation for the future. When I left a day early I tried tocheck out before 11 am because a normal checkout time is 11 but thisdid not help my case.

Review 13:it is convenient to everything but on the property you don't feel crowded. there is enough elbow room for everyone. the breakfast nook on premisis was nice. the dune deck is a nice place to talk with other guests.

Review 14:Not really bad, but I prefer more upscale and will pay more for it in the future.

Review 15:I chose it for the low price and being on the beach, on the way to my destination.

Review 16:When we checked in one of the ladies was pretty hard on one of the new employees. The new employee was really nice, however.

Review 17:Loved the beach access and the location. The deck overlooking the ocean was especially nice. Clean albeit older rooms.

Review 18:The room we were in had stains on the carpet, the room furnishings were dated, had a wonderful view of the parking lot. For the money I would have expected more this time of year. No elevator and I'm disabled so I had to drag my luggage up two flights of stairs.

Review 19:The facility was located on the Ocean.

Review 20:Grounds were dirty and full of trash and cigarette butts, had trashcan but people didn't use them

Review 21:The location was nice, but they need to update, which I know will raise the price...need to update

Review 22:maybe an update on breakfast items, i think the decking going to the beach could use some maintenance-alot of nails & boards need replacing, the doors to each room slam very loudly-any way to use quieter closures?

Review 23:weather was excellent, coffee was great, was very clean

Review 24:The cleanliness of the hotel is pitiful. Chose to stay here for the location, looked forward to leaving due to the condition of the hotel.

Review 25:Location to the beach is hard to beat.

Review 26:Uncomfortable beds, after the first night my girlfriend woke up with bug bites all over her neck and back so we cancelled the rest of our stay and left.

Review 27:Location, location, location. The staff at check in was great. Very nice and welcoming.

Review 28:A bit dated on the decor and some repairs needed but honestly for a place on the beach it really was fine. Was perfect for a 3 day mini vacation. Breakfast was not special. Would consider it on the low end of free breakfast hotels. But they did have a assortment and the woman running it could not have been nicer.

Review 29:Staff was so friendly. Great location!!

Review 30:The AC in the room didn't stay on long enough to make the humidity disappear so it was a little hot

Review 31:The fact then hotel was on the beach and provided a playground and pool was awesome for my family.

Review 32:We didnt have a bad experience and will be making reservations for our 2016 August vacation. We go to the Outerbanks every first week in August.

Review 33:This was our 2nd time staying there and we like the fact that it is so close to the beach. That they allow pets even though we didn't bring any and the continental breakfast was very nice.

Review 34:The hotel badly needs updates. Our room was "beach front" but we could not see the beach from our room as we were on the ground floor and behind the dunes. Our sliding door was broken, not on the runner, so we didn't feel totally safe on the ground floor. The shower head was not fully connected to the wall and seemed about to fall off. Also, our air conditioning cooled the room but did not take the humidity out - it was sticky and damp. We simply needed a place to sleep at the beach and this served our purpose, but would choose someplace else next time until they can renovate.

Review 35:The staff were very friendly, the breakfast was convenient and offered some options. The hotel was on the beach, and offered a balcony off our room. Located right across the street from fabulous lunch/dinner place, "Kill Devil Grill." Fair price for a hotel on the beach for one night.

Review 36:Did not get anything that we booked on-line. Very deceiving on Web site. The amount of people staying was wrong at least they got the two dogs right. Cost $40 dollars a night for 2 dogs. That's insane. Very disappointed.

Review 37:Can't think of anything.

Review 38:I should have requested ocean view since it was our 40th anniversary.

Review 39:my wife really liked the convenience of the room in the old 4 story building. the Yancy is a part of my youth dating back almost 50 yrs. I am glad its still there.

Review 40:The room phone didn't work, the alarm clock was broken, wifi wouldnot connect to my laptop or to my iphone, weak or no signal detected. When I mentioned these issues to lady at the front desk, she didnt seemto give a damn!

Review 41:We were there during in season - pricing for a non-ocean front room was still $200...but it's the season.

Review 42:Great service, friendly staff, convenient location. The breakfast was good, usual choices. The room was larger than expected and clean.

Review 43:Tiny pillows, long walk for ice. Had to go downstairs then upstairs for the beach, loud air conditioner.

Review 44:Privacy, room was nice size. Free wi-di. They had an ice cream social for the guests.

Review 45:noisy guest coming in at 2:30 am, doors seem paper thin as hall noise isn't muffled

Review 46:Nice folks at the front desk, rooms were clean and comfortable with light colors that make it appear bigger.

Review 47:The breakfast left a little to be desired.

Review 48:The staff was very attentive. Our refrigerator hummed and buzzed. They sent someone up to fix it and when it couldn't be fixed, they brought in a new refrigerator! The location in proximity to the beach was perfect and the hotel was VERY clean!

Review 49:This is a great place to stay for the price! Its nothing fancy but everyone was very nice, it was clean and right on the beach! Will be staying again!

Review 50:My wife went there for a mini-vacation for herself and really enjoyed it. She wants us to go back as a family. A very affordable room for the peak season.

Review 51:I would have liked a location that was closer to businesses that me and kids could have walked to but a little too far for my young kids. The hotel needs a lot of upgrades. Carpet needs repair. The room didn't smell so great. The breakfast could have been a little better. Maybe add made to order eggs and bacon and/or sausage. Overall though it was well worth what we paid. Lowest price we found in the area.

Review 52:The manager was very helpful and went out of her way to help us. Its right on the ocean so that was nice and there is a shower room to wash off in private. Very nice to have this after you check out and do not have a room to take a shower and change.

Review 53:The room was connected weird with other rooms and the partying(noise, music, smoke)crept under the door into our room. The walls are thin and it does get noisy but overall a great deal!

Review 54:The location was awesome! Loved the sundeck!

Review 55:one unpleasant desk clerk I requested a change in room location and she acted as though I was requesting a trip to the moon. It took way to long. I have never been treated that way by a front desk clerk before. The clerk on day one was wonderful though.

Review 56:Location and price

Review 57:I made a mistake and booked non-smoking instead of smoking. I called to see if a non-smoking room was available. I was able to switch but the lady on the phone made it clear that it was my fault I got smoking room - even though I apologized up front and said I had made the mistake. She was quick to let me know I got what I asked for. She could have been a little more customer oriented.

Review 58:The bed!

Review 59:We did not get the pool view room that we paid for and the floor was nasty, the sink was too small, the toilet no cover on it.

Review 60:The location was very good.

Review 61:A couple of the women at the front office were pretty grouchy. The first room with queen beds were a lot more comfortable then the double beds in the oceanfront room. The breakfast was just good enough...not great by no means. We've had better breakfast at less expensive places.

Review 62:Having the oceanfront room, and the access to the beach like we did was wonderful.

Review 63:The night manager was the best manager at any hotel I have ever been to. He helped me with my problem with noise from neighbors in a different facility. He was gracious and very helpful.

Review 64:The sand fleas in the hall. The tv didn't work. No budge on the check out time. The patio door was difficult to open and when it didn't it literally fell off the track and outta the window space lol. Wasn't a motel but ahould be classified as such. Shame because with proper renovations it could be a nicer place.

Review 65:The waffles and coffee were good. The beds were also comfortable. Great beach location.

Review 66:no elevators no guard rails in shower

Review 67:The staff was very friendly and helpful! We got married there and we could not have been treated better if we were family!

Review 68:On our porch only had 1 chair? for a double room....

Review 69:The bed was great, loved the pillows! Great size refrigerator. Just wish we could have stayed longer and had ocean view room!

Review 70:There is a notable musty smell that does not go away. Also, would like to have screen on sliding glass door.

Review 71:Being on the beach, clean, nice housekeeping staff

Review 72:We have a handicap license on our vehicle, but there was only one handicap parking place at the Four Seasons facility, and it was a very narrow turn backing out. Most of the time we parked in a regular spot, but again it wasn't wide enough for a handicap vehicle.

Review 73:This was a trip to our old vacation stomping grounds when my hubby and I were still working. We hadn't been back for fifteen years, since we retired and moved to Florida. This was a wonderful revisit, and the John Yancey Inn was perfect for its location. We could throw open the balcony doors and slumber to the sound of pounding surf. Delightful! Yes, we plan to come back.

Review 74:We really did not have any problems to report. Parking was tight but we managed to fit in the lot!

Review 75:We liked our room. It was oceanview. Wish it had been facing the ocean though since we booked in the off season! Boys enjoyed the closeness to the beach and liked the pool too. Very happy about the WiFi!

Review 76:Old hotel / very basic accommodations / no hot water in shower/ thin walls / un friendly front end personnel

Review 77:Location / buffet breakfast and friendly breakfast staff

Review 78:The hotel needs to be updated. The room smelt old and we had ants in our room. They really need to replace the carpeting and update the place. I will not stay again we were very disappointed. Had to inspect the sheets because there was hair on the throw pillow.

Review 79:the price was kinda high for it not being right on the beach which I thought it would be.

Review 80:the room was comfortable, although we wish the weather had been better. Also the pics on the website were of the rooms that opened to the beach as the back yard. We didn't have one of those but ours was nice too.

Review 81:First night we found more than a dozen of cockroaches, we brought a few of them to Management Office and we spoke with the Manager Mrs. Linda she offered us the total amount back, we refused and decided to stay, middle of the night and weekend we could be without a room. Ask for the room fumigated next day, they didn't do it, we ended spraying the room ourself, after this we only found a few dead cockroaches. Their explanation was because of heat and humidity, after we fumigated they were almost gone. Breakfast is also a low point. We are not coming back , ever again.

Review 82:Great location

Review 83:Older rooms, thin walls where you could hear every word from the TV next door, pet rooms connected to non-pet rooms....yapping dogs at 6:00am when you are on vacation.....something I could live without.

Review 84:Close to the beach!! Very helpful general manager and staff.

Review 85:Hotel is very dog friendly-not just little dogs, but New Foundlands, German Shepards etc Parts of hotel are very old and rundown Wall extremely thin Price seemed high for what you get

Review 86:Location on the ocean was excellent Staff tried to be helpful Breakfast was good

Review 87:The room that we thought we had booked was not given to us. We thought we had a room with instant access to the beach instead we ended up with a room on the 4th floor looking at the beach. Our room did have some flaws like the carpet bein old and looking like it had mold on it and the bathroom was not very big and apparently the maid service does not clean the bathroom unless you ask and sometimes they don't clean it when you do ask. There were a few issues in communicating with the workers at the front desk and things that we requested not being done until we called back and asked again, but overall it was a nice trip and we would go back hoping for a nicer room next time

Review 88:We really loved the fact that the hotel was right on the beach it was awesome and the room was nice and big

Review 89:The staff are really in their business mind. They do not smile much. Their ways of talking to customers are busniess-oriented.

Review 90:The location is excellent 'cause it is in front of the beace.

Review 91:The price. The most I've every paid for a simple hotel room on the beach.

Review 92:Close to wear we needed to be on Saturday morning. Paid for the convenience of not dealing with Saturday morning traffic coming into OBX.

Review 93:I did not get what I thought I was getting. What I saw online were ocean view rooms with wood decks facing the beach, but I got a room with a rusty concrete deck that faced another house and the sliding door was very hard to open and close. Room was musty smelling. If I was rating it with 5 being the very best rating, I would give it a two (2). We just stayed out of the room most of the time and used it just for sleeping. Not someplace to just hang out in enjoy watching the waves and relaxing. I learned that from now on I will call and get specifics of a place instead of relying on internet pictures which can be very deceiving.

Review 94:The room was very damp. My husband is handicapped and although I asked for an easily accessed room, I was not given one. Price was way too high for the value

Review 95:The location

Review 96:Our room was by an exit to the hallway/stairway and was a tight fit when trying to get into room while someone was trying to get through the entranceway.

Review 97:Love that it was right on the beach, room was clean and fresh smelling. Liked that there were rooms on the first floor that opened up to the beach and am hoping to stay in one of those in the near future.

Review 98:Our TV did not have any sound, and my daughter was disappointed. Also, when I booked the room I was sure I was getting oceanfront, but it was not and that was disappointing. The staff when I checked out was not very friendly either.

Review 99:I liked the cleanliness of the room, the pool, and the easy beach access. My mother was with me and walks with a cane, so things were pretty convenient for her. Although we did not take our dog, I loved that you allowed dogs. The check in staff was friendly.

Review 100:A few little items in room were broken. hangers and rod to draw drape. Friday nite came back late and no room in parking lot. Had to park across the street in diner. Staff was very helpful to accommodate at all times.

Review 101:I liked that hotel was not large and not located with larger hotels and motels , therefore beach area was less crowded. Bed was comfortable and bedding clean and new looking. Room had refrig and and all needed for beach stay extra chairs and table and chairs to dine . Andorran chairs were comfortable for balcony viewing the water, moon and beach from 4th floor. Elevator was a plus for convenience and had luggage cart available when needed. Breakfast area was clean and waffles and fruit cereal and coffee meant more time to spend on beach

Review 102:Sliding door to the balcony was hard to open, bathroom door was hard to open, breakfast room was too small.

Review 103:Great location, wright brothers memorial is about 2 miles from there, restaurants are close, breakfast was good.

Review 104:Great location. Room was clean and quite with a comfortable king sized bed and hot shower.Great staff, they even changed their main sign marquee to wish my wife and I a happy 10 year anniversary which was a surprising and thoughtful touch. If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, reasonably priced room on the obx that has good location for a good price, and direct private beach access from your room then the John Yancy Inn is the spot for you. My wife and I will definitely return here on our next trip to the obx.

Review 105:The location was amazing, right on the ocean, only a one minute walk to the beach. Our kids loved the pool as well. The room was clean and tidy and provided everything we needed for a one night stay. The complimentary breakfast was great and the employees were very nice and helpful.

Review 106:Cramped room. Spider in tub. The maid came in despite our "Do not disturb" sign and threw out some of our hard-earned seashells (then denied having done so). But she did not clean the sand out of the tub while she was there! Breakfast was late the first morning - we had to go to the desk to get her to unlock the door. A few condition issues with the building - cracks and rust.

Review 107:Location, location, location! Walk over the dune and you're at the ocean.

Review 108:we had a great time here, the staff was amazing. just a few feet from the beach or you can have a room right on the sand. pet friendly!!!!! the pool was also nice to have besides the beach if you have little kids. I have nothing bad to say about this place and I am sure we will stay here again.

Review 109:When we arrived at the hotel, our room was ready and we were allowed to check in at 2 rather than 4. The front desk staff was very outgoing, friendly and helpful. The picnic area/grills were an added bonus. I'd definitely stay here again!!

Review 110:The breakfast was not all that great. We ate elsewhere.

Review 111:This is a nice older motel. The rooms were a bit small but clean. The ocean front room was nice and airy. Wonderful view of the ocean. It was a bit expensive for the age of the building. Close to everything.

Review 112:Loved the location , easy access to dining areas and all the shops ?

Review 113:None

Review 114:Good place on the beach

Review 115:Our room had a masked odor and no phone. My mattress was worn out. I kept rolling in a hole.

Review 116:I liked the location and the price. Staff was friendly.

Review 117:There was an odor in the room, a musty smell. Also, there were large water bugs in the bed.

Review 118:Poor parking, we had to park in the next parking lot to get to our room

Review 119:Right on the beach, not new but clean and excellent bedding.

Review 120:Nothing

Review 121:Great manager she was nice to us, hotel was clean

Review 122:Saw a few roaches, but that's to be expected in an older hotel on the beach

Review 123:Ocean front deck, central location

Review 124:Looked like they repainted and carpet.

Review 125:Bed was awful, very uncomfortable.

Review 126:Location - close to beach.

Review 127:The hotel is a but dated. Needs some upgrades.

Review 128:Loved that it was right on the beach.

Review 129:Nothing in particular.

Review 130:Location, continental breakfast.
