Reviews for Juneau Guesthouse
Review 1:Closest store/grocery is about 25 min. walk, closest restaurant about 40 min. walk. Bus is a 10 min. walk
Review 2:It was new year, and I was the only one there. clean and friendly. got my own room
Review 3:I was promised a number of things, locks on doors, keys and en suit room. When I arrived my room was already given to someone else and thankfully there was a different room available so I used that. There were no working locks, including my room, the front door and the bathroom! The owner promised to refund some money as I was not in the ensuite, that refund has not materialised. On arrival the cab driver told me they often take more people to this property than there are rooms available, so often people find themselves sleeping on the couch!
Review 4:Location suiting me well.
Review 5:Cory was an excellent, welcoming, and friendly host. The facilities are kept quite clean and the room was very nice. The location is great if you're flying into the Juneau Airport. It's in the middle of the airport and the Mendenhall Glacier, which means that my friend and I got to take a short taxi ride to the glacier early morning, beating all the tourist crowds, and still catch our flight at 10 am. It was great.
Review 6:Place looked like a converted garage & had stuff scattered around outside like a junk yard. Toilet not clean. Very difficult location without a car. Depressing place and woman not very helpful with information.
Review 7:Nothing
Review 8:Located in a very bad area, doors (outside and bedroom door) did not have a lock. House was in complete darkness. I was not familiar with the region so it took me 30min to find the house since house number is fading making it difficult to identify property. Woke up with neighbors fighting on the street and felt unsafe since doors do not have locks. Picture does not reflect current condition of the house. WiFi does not work - unable to log in after several attempts.
Review 9:Friendliness of proprietor
Review 10:Didn't check in. It was dirty and smelly being nex to a creek with dead salmon. No clerk on duty. I Had to call Cory several times because there was no sign, can't believe it has a health certificate.
Review 11:N/A
Review 12:The gentleman that runs the place is very nice and helpful. He has a wealth of information for you. I loved the fact that the house is next to a moving brook with salmon. The bed was very comfortable. Location is great! On our walk to the man road, we saw a black bear running to cross the street. He was 75 feet away from us. Loved it! If you aren't picky and need a place to crash, then give it a go. Besides, who travels to Alaska to stay in a room all day?
Review 13:Was not able to access the room! Never stayed there. They never answered the phone when I called. Took a taxi to the address and then took a taxi back to the airport and slept in the airport.
Review 14:Room in a house, but the house smelt of dogs. Free bicycles had been mentioned, could not unlock the only decent one.
Review 15:Proximity to Mendenhall Glacier OK, but even a bit too far to walk.
Review 16:We were horrified not to have someone meet us at the place. It was not named so we were unsure if we were at the right place. It consisted of many small rooms in what appeared to be someone's house. The money had been taken from our account early so we had no choice but to stay! Disappointed that this would be on bookings.com
Review 17:This place is best suited for young male backpacker travelers. The room was clean and comfortable enough, but it is strange walking into this guy's house, which was not well kept. There was trash on the ground that animals had pulled out of the cans outside. And the house is sort of a dump - but it is in a nice neighborhood. Its not the best spot if you don't have a car or a bike (and the bikes were not in working condition for us to use). I really can't recommend this place, it was a bit of a strange experience. Definitely would not recommend for children or single women.
Review 18:We did have a nice walk back from the Mendenhall glacier to the neighborhood (we love to walk). The host was nice enough, but we felt like we were intruding a bit on he and his girlfriend in the evening.
Review 19:Totally disorganised with bookings. Code @ side door not working, another guest let me in @ 11.30pm otherwise I'd be sleeping??. Noisey washing machine preset to start during night. No security at all.
Review 20:Good location if not wanting to be downtown. Helpful host if/when you see them. One of the cheapest so you get what you pay for. If you can afford better, go for it.
Review 21:Just the double booking.
Review 22:Corey makes the place feel and be like home. He went out of the way to accommodate me when there was a double booking out of his control.
Review 23:A bit far out of town, but the bus stop is nearby so it's not a big issue.
Review 24:Nice, relaxed home, can use kitchen, very fast Wi-Fi, cable tv, close to bus stop and airport. Friendly owner and staff.
Review 25:We never once spotted a bear. :(
Review 26:My son says: "Everything." And I understand why. It was a truly wonderful week where everything seemed to flow. I would put the proprietor at the top of the list of awesomeness, but he's a busy person, and we were lucky to be there when he was. So the other things I appreciated: the other people staying there, the chill vibe, the ability to claim as much privacy as you want, the fast wifi, the easily accessible laundry, the walking distance through the forest to the grocery store, the easy access to the bus, and the ability to improvise. I felt very safe staying here.
Review 27:The house was untidy. The room was only just passable on cleanliness. The property looks very dodgy from the outside. There is no supermarket or cafe near the property (50 min walk) you will need to drive or get a taxi. Would suggest purchasing breakfast items etc before going to the property from the airport.
Review 28:It was cheap. The host was friendly and very relaxed. Only 45 min walk to the glacier.
Review 29:Walls are a little thin, but everyone there was very courteous.
Review 30:Pretty close to Mendenhall, Corey is very friendly and willing to help with your adventures. Much, much cheaper than a hotel.
Review 31:No bad experience! Very satisfied!
Review 32:I liked that it was away from the main streets and it was nice and quiet. It felt like I was walking into my own house. It has a very relaxed feel to it.
Review 33:The wifi only worked in the common area, not in my bedroom (not sure if that was the case for the other rooms, mine was further away than the rest). Also, I recommend having a car or a bike here at the time being unless your reason is to be near the university, which is closer. Once the bus stops detouring it will be much easier to get downtown.
Review 34:It's your classic hostel. While I was there it was pretty quiet and clean and the other guests were pleasant. The owner Billie is very sweet, and due to unusual circumstances during my stay I was not able to rent a car, (plus the road where the bus normally comes a block away was under construction so the bus was detouring!) she offered me a ride to the nearest place where I could get a few groceries. She definitely didn't have to!
Review 35:I liked every thing, the price, location and the owner. If you are traveling and only need a bed for the nite with no fuss, no muss this is the place to call.
Review 36:A good deal for the budget traveler. The rooms are clean and quiet. There is no breakfast, but there is a kitchen if you want to cook. Cory, the proprietor, is a great guy to meet and very helpful with tips for the local area.
Review 37:It was a pleasure to meet Cory (the host) and share his house for 2 nights. He was interesting and helpful - even loaned us his Jeep while we were there and took us to the Marine Highway dock.
Review 38:construction impacted our room (entry for electrical) after 8pm which I find unacceptable for any guest let alone a single woman and child. construction noise started prior to 8am - ridiculous. personally I think construction noise should be limited to at least 8am-8pm maximum. dirty dishes in the sink left there the entire time. I washed, dried and put away my own, and them some, but not my job to do others unless stated as a shareable task and actually shared. the invisible but smell of musty mildew/mold indicated the carpets and house needed a serious deep cleaning. the kitchen was messy, piled up garbage upon entry, phone cable to house fell down across yard and took a full day before it was reattached to the home, causing a hazard. this might be ok for a single male backpacker who is used to couchsurfing (I realize this is a generalization) but would definitely not recommend for anyone with children nor single women.
Review 39:inexpensive, free wifi, kind owner, could likely improve my opinion if there was at least a 1 time major deep cleaning and then keeping the kitchen and bathroom tidy daily.
Review 40:Turned out to be more comfortable than my first impression would have me believe. Cory was friendly and helpful. Check out his video "Smokin' Fish" for some insight to the Native American culture of the area. Very well done.
Review 41:Bed was comfortable, room quiet, owner allowed use of kitchen and laundry facilities and supplied coffee. Shared living room with other guests which was pleasant. The place is close to the Menenhall Glacier area which has hiking and biking trails I was easily able to use one nice sunny day. Although several miles from downtown, there is bus service every 1/2 hour, which worked well for me. At 1/2 the price of other Juneau hotel rooms, it may be the best value in what is an expensive town for hotels.
Review 42:No place to secure valuables when you leave.
Review 43:Corey was super nice and helpful. Location was great for me. I enjoyed the experience. Bus stops nearby, cab is $11 to/from the airport.
Review 44:The Guesthouse accessibility to downtown take a little effort to overcome.
Review 45:The Guesthouse is perfectly located within walking distance from Mendenhall glacier, lake, and trials. The location in Mendenhall Valley is great for travelers looking to have more of a local experience of talking to people around a fireplace away from the tourist mob of downtown. If you need to go downtown, bus route will also be available down the street.
Review 46:As I mentioned, the location is for better and worse, however, it is not his fault, Juneau is wonderful, but at the same time complicated for travelers who don't manage to drive their own or rented car. Because of the poor local transit, It is mainly tough to visit several points of interest such as the Mendenhall Glacier and Mt Roberts or anywhere else in downtown and surprisingly there's also no bus to the ferry terminal.
Review 47:The location is somehow great, because it's a quiet neighborhood in between the airport and the Mendenhall Glacier and not that far from the ferry terminal too. On the other hand, the local transit in Juneau is pretty bad and take a lot of time to go to downtown, which is a little bit away from there. Bear in mind, if you concentrate your activities in downtown. Sometimes It might be annoying. I really appreciated the host, Cory, who was really helpful during my stay and even let me make arrangements for a delivery by Amazon, while ordering some stuff. Thanks for the hospitality! If you're looking for something simple, cheap, safe and clean, that's your place in Juneau.
Review 48:Location is deep in the suburb, so not in walking distance of anything. Host had friends over one night, so common area can be on the busy side.
Review 49:Host was good about communication. Room was clean.
Review 50:Transportation infrequent or non-existent (early or late on weekends). Taxis are expensive and connection to Alaska ferry by taxi only or 1.5 mile walk to bus stop.
Review 51:Close enough to bus lines, but bus infrequent. Price is right and facilities are comfortable. Plenty of closet space and bed is Q/K size.
Review 52:with buses quite limited to reach town, or shops. Taxi is very expensive. pity about poor cleanliness.
Review 53:nice to be in a house of a local. Close to Glacier, on a beautiful walking trail.
Review 54:the fact that it is not in Juneau as primarily stated. There are no pictures of the bedrooms on this site. This place cannot in any way be classed as a guesthouse a mediocre hostel perhaps. It was classed as a quiet room but whenever anyone used the laundry facilities the whole building sounded like it was taking off. also a man kept coming into our room to reset the electric trip switch.
Review 55:The other guests were friendly and the price was cheap.
Review 56:Locks on interior doors not that good. House a little old and run-down, but considering the low price, that was ok. Fridge needed cleaning out and there weren't any bowls for cereal.
Review 57:good value - by far the cheapest in the area. Close to Mendenhall Glacier. Use of kitchen and laundry. People friendly. Nice view of creek next to house. VHS movies to watch.
Review 58:Not sure the bedding was freshly laundered. Host stayed up very late watching tv and entertaining on the other side of a thin wall. Did not get the rest I had counted on. Desperate travelers only should try.
Review 59:The bed was reasonably comfortable
Review 60:It's not a guesthouse but somebody's home who gave up their room and slept on the floor. Bathroom dirty. Kitchen dirty. The place is run down.
Review 61:The dog was nice. And when we left was better.
Review 62:Hospitality of the host, and the feeling of welcome to come through again.
Review 63:bed room e bath room very dirty, tovel e sheet of the other people. trash of many day at home. is not a place for tourist, it is just for animals
Review 64:Dog poop on the walkway to the door.
Review 65:remodeled bedroomroom & bathroom
Review 66:Proximity to Mendenhall Glacier Hominess of the facility
Review 67:A very comfortable bed, and shower. Very helpful host and friendly. Close to the glacier.
Review 68:the water for the shower and sink stopped working both in the evening and in the morning. not sure why.
Review 69:i heated water on the stove for my dinner.
Review 70:The owner was very helpful, and fun, quite a character.
Review 71:Far from town, no transportation, dirty, lack of communication
Review 72:Low price
Review 73:The property was run down, not so clean but advertised as much more - very disappointing.
Review 74:The owners big heart.
Review 75:A little far from transit.
Review 76:Comfy bed, pretty Creek by house.
Review 77:A little hard to find. It's a house and there's no sign
Review 78:A comfortable room at a good price
Review 79:everything
Review 80:nothing
Review 81:very clean and small town hospitality.
Review 82:Not very close to food or shopping.
Review 83:Near the airport, inexpensive, friendly staff, close to the glacier.
