Reviews for El Rey Inn
Review 1:Bait and Switch. The online photo showed a beautiful, spacious room with beamed ceiling and other Southwest details. We were given a cheap, ordinary motel room and had to pay $15 extra dollars. They claimed that Online Hotels had mislead us. Very disappointed.
Review 2:I would have loved a fireplace, but we were plenty warm.
Review 3:It was a great place our room was wonderful! Everything was super clean and everyone was so friendly.
Review 4:Hard to locate on complicated road system. Awful breakfast.....forget it, go to the restaurant next door instead!
Review 5:Helpful staff, cool & shady room, lovely swimming pool, great restaurant next door.
Review 6:The place is quaint and clean. The rooms are small at the lowest rate, but its a great deal and worked out fine for us. Next time we will spend a bit more and get an upgrade. The rooms are bigger and they have fireplaces in several.
Review 7:We did not have any bad experiences. We did miss the flavored breakfast tortillas that were served in years past. The grounds looked a bit unkept with holes at entrance way and leggy shrubs. Our room was cozy but a bit dark and dated. We missed the aroma of the pinion pine from the fireplaces which were due to be inspected during the next several days. None of these issues were serious or would keep us from returning in the future. Hope to see you again in a year or two.
Review 8:The location is ideal for getting anywhere in or out of Santa Fe. We had stayed at El Rey several times in the past with both younger & older family members and it stirred up those great memories. The staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We made use of the great books in the lobby to review restaurants and other community activities. The recommendation of The Pantry for an all round good cafe for breakfast, lunch or dinner was an excellent one.
Review 9:Antique TV that takes up too much space. No spare plugs in room for charging phone. Poor wifi reception in room.
Review 10:Well maintained traditional property with plenty of outdoor space to sit. Nice pool area. Real cups and plates in breakfast room, no plastic.
Review 11:Creatively decorated rooms and grounds, quiet & pleasant, lots of great nooks to get off by ourselves. Had a wonderful breakfast in the breakfast room.
Review 12:Please consider a small gift shop with nice quality and assortment of El Rey Inn and Santa Fe souvenirs. The mugs you do have do not do justice to the Inn.
Review 13:Beautiful Santa Fe style buildings and well groomed grounds. So sweet and comfortable. The staff working the continental breakfast were very friendly and efficient.
Review 14:El Rey Inn was such a great find for our 5 day stay in Santa Fe. The rooms were clean, it was very quiet and the staff could not have been any nicer or more helpful. Location is perfect. Staff recommended "The Pantry" restaurant next door. We ate a dinner there, don't pass on this restaurant, we had a delicious dinner.
Review 15:We had a traditional room, that did not lack character, but was very small, not very comfortable (the bed in particular) with very dated furniture and dark. Too near from the main road, therefore noisy and overall quite pricey. Sadly the room was a let down when the rest of the hotel was charming and enchanting.
Review 16:The hotel grounds, breakfast room and lounge are fantastic. So is the pool and hot tub. A great place which makes you feel like you are truly leaving the original Route 66 experience.
Review 17:Old TV; would like to see an upgrade to flat screen.
Review 18:Beautiful grounds. Loved all the tile murals and southwestern architecture. Sauna and hot tub were so relaxing!
Review 19:10-15 minute drive to downtown, but worth it.
Review 20:Loved the property grounds. Loved the open-air hot-tub. Loved the Breakfast and green chili sauce! Beautiful retro-style motor-lodge!
Review 21:Could not get on wifi, though my husband could. Had to use my phone to pick up messages, etc.
Review 22:I love all the secret gardens and patios, the jacuzzis, pool and the rooms are very nice.
Review 23:There was sign in our room saying to check who was at the door before opening, to not display the room key anywhere etc. Kind of creeped us out but it just didn't seem like that sort of area so don't know if crime had clear up a lot since those signs were made of whether it was just precaution?
Review 24:Location is great, staff were lovely and the whole hotel looked beautiful
Review 25:The staff was very friendly and the room was spotless. Parking was free and they have a delightful breakfast room. We were quite impressed with the gardens. We will stay at the El Rey again.
Review 26:Some of the garden areas were a little overgrown. Breakfast was not a full breakfast, as the website seemed to tell us.
Review 27:Charming facility. Some of the room designs (such as the A/C and heater in the bathroom) were old, but functioned very well. Staff was great, and it was a much better value than La Posada where I had a two day business meeting right after our stay at TWICE the price and half the charm.
Review 28:Love the El Rey. The staff are very accommodating, and the accommodations are very nice. Love the little breakfast room as well. If it were closer to the Plaza, it would be more expensive. Parking is free, also a benefit.
Review 29:El Rey was a fun eclectic place with great value for the area and I loved the retro feel. I absolutely loved all the landscaping and little nooks to sit and enjoy a moment in time.
Review 30:Thought our room was overpriced for standard room. Bed was so-so comfortable.
Review 31:Attention to detail, long-term (good) employees, amenities such as full, wonderful breakfast & service, delightful pool area, wonderful bathroom in room, historic individuality, wonderful plants & attractive smoking area for husband. Would love to try one of the deluxe suites with "fireplace and rocking chair" sometime.
Review 32:Never write reviews but we loved this place! Great green feeling with trees, flowers, sitting areas. Pool, hot tubs and sauna were fabulous. And beautiful, delicious fresh berries or fruit with breakfast! Really loved it. And excellent value and quality fir the money!
Review 33:my only 'complaint' and it is minor is that our bed was a bit uncomfortable. Both my wife and I sort of sank to the middle of the mattress.
Review 34:general sense of comfort, privacy, quietness
Review 35:The wifi was a bit slow.
Review 36:The friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness and the location. The staff was helpful and always smiling. It's rare to see a breakfast with fresh fruits.
Review 37:the street the inn is located on is one long road of strip malls and stores
Review 38:grounds are lush and architecture/ambiance charming excellent breakfast room furnishings fit the southwest and aren't simply motel generic relatively close to the plaza would definitely stay again on a return to santa fe
Review 39:The pool was extremely disappointing. The pool was very very cold, the hot tub tile was dangerously slippery, and the bathrooms at the bath house were unclean and unsanitary. (We showered in our rooms.)
Review 40:The place was very authentic and was a nice treat away from the traditional chain motel.
Review 41:Breakfast was ok. Tried to be helpful by clearing a table so we could sit down but got snubbed by the breakfast lady who offered everyone fruit and tortilla but us!
Review 42:Pretty motel off Route 66. Good location, short drive into the centre. Good facilities with nice pool area. Helpful staff on reception. Recommend the Pantry next door for amazing New Mexican food!
Review 43:Our room was well-appointed but a little small for two. Next time I'll ask for a king bed instead of a queen and little bit more room.
Review 44:A very pretty and charming place. We felt safe, comfortable and loved the gardens.
Review 45:The matress was a little hard.
Review 46:Excellent facilities. Nice pool area. Cosy sitting groups outside. Okay breakfast. Nice to get fruit served in small bowls. Had a wonderful stay at El Ray.
Review 47:Breakfast was the only negative about the El Rey. It was a pretty sad affair. There are many great places for breakfast in Santa Fe--The Tecolote, Tia Sophia's or Chocolate Maven--try one.
Review 48:The El Rey was a lovely experience. The grounds are beautiful with hidden nooks and courtyards to enjoy the flowers or read your favorite book. Two hot tubs, one inside, one outside and a beautiful pool. The staff was impeccable. Helpful, friendly, smart. Our room was spacious and well-appointed. Just a short drive to the Plaza. It's absolutely the best bang for your buck in Santa Fe.
Review 49:The staff is helpful and friendly. The beds are comfy, the grounds are lush and relaxing, the rooms are affordable. You can see and feel the pride the owners have for both their guests and their fabulous property.
Review 50:Leaving
Review 51:From the welcome at reception to final goodbyes at breakfast the last day, we had exceptional service. Full of beauty, the grounds are peaceful and promote relaxation and pausing. We had heard it was a great place to stay and it was!
Review 52:Absolutely nothing.
Review 53:The location is superb, within easy driving distance of the Plaza but away from the downtown traffic. The facilities are impeccable. The staff is friendly & helpful. The rooms are quiet, comfortable, and very nicely furnished.
Review 54:No fresh fruit at free breakfast both mornings I was there, although Icame just a half-hour before service stopped and may have missed anystrawberries or bananas available earlier. The tv picture was fuzzy andthe color off -- but the desk thanked me profusely for reporting itwhen I left. These are not serious problems; I'd still like to justlive there!
Review 55:The place is so charming! The bed was comfortable and the roomsare quiet.
Review 56:I love the small grouping of buildings, the old adobe architecture, the genuine vigas in the ceilings, the numerous outdoor "hideaways" to sit and enjoy coffee or just experience the peaceful surroundings.
Review 57:The wifi was completely unreliable. I couldn't get on much of the time, and was dumped every 10-15 minutes when I could get on. For travelers who need to be in touch with the world, El Rey's wifi is a deal-breaker. Cost me time, patience, data charges, and my satisfaction with El Rey.
Review 58:Charming and comfortable room, lovely staff.
Review 59:I think the price was too high for a room with two double beds, but... A continental breakfast is served in a small room. For some reason the tortillas and fresh fruit are available only from a server.
Review 60:The grounds are really pretty. It looks like the buildings were just painted.
Review 61:Breakfast was included, but the breakfast room was tiny and the selection a bit eclectic so I would have preferred to save that money and spend it at Denny's.
Review 62:The hotel consists of various one-storey buildings that are further away from the noisy road so the rooms are quiet and you can park in front of them (no fee). They are clean and nicely decorated, the heating is super (it was very cold in Santa Fee and it even started snowing during the night), and the beds are very comfortable. Staff was friendly. El Rey Inn was a good choice for a stay outside the city center; other hotels along the road looked horrible. But you have to drive into town and parking in the city center is really expensive. So my advice would be to compare room rates of hotels with free parking or fixed rates and rather stay in the center closer to everthing in walking distance.
Review 63:I didn't have a bad experience but I think the carpets could becleaned more often. Mine was pretty dirty noticeable by the marks myfeet left on the towel in the bathroom. I didn't go barefootanywhere but in my room so the dirt was definitely from the carpet.
Review 64:I like the overall feel of the El Rey. No matter what room I stay in, Ifeel like I am in the heart of the Southwest. The desk staff are alwaysso friendly and helpful.
Review 65:the patio door lock was broken...anyone could enter with little trouble...water dripped loudly from bathtub faucet....breakfast was ok...cannot believe someone had not mentioned the door or faucet beforehand
Review 66:The wifi was very poor. Almost impossible to even check email. The breakfast is no longer nearly as good as it was in the past - not even worth going to the "free" breakfast.
Review 67:Can't think of a thing.
Review 68:The El Rey is a wonderful, gracious, comfortable spot in Santa Fe. We always stay here when staying in Santa Fe. It is historic, part of the buildings and grounds date back to the 20's I believe. There are lovely gardens surrounding the property, trees shading the lawns and keeping the area quiet. The staff is warm, efficient and responsive. There is a huge outdoor pool and several hot water spas distributed throughout the property. Another attribute is that it is next door to The Pantry a great coffee shop! There are fancier places in Santa Fe but no better.
Review 69:Suggest earplugs if you are in the front rooms. We use earplugs a lot on our travels anyway.
Review 70:It's a lovely place with gardens and the Route 66 history. We thought it was pretty and romantic.
Review 71:Wonderful large room with a great balcony overlooking walking gardens and swimming pool. Our room was very clean and all of the amenities very appropriate and convenient.
Review 72:It entry was semi difficult, depending on the time if day. Very heavy traffic.
Review 73:The staff was very polite n professional. The room was very well made up and clean. The garden area was relaxing.
Review 74:All the bulbs were incandescent. Although I do not prefer cfl the savings is significant.
Review 75:Jose at the front desk was a pleasure to deal with and the tortilla lady at breakfast is a sweetheart! Thank you for a wonderful nostalgic weekend in my old home town!
Review 76:Make sure you know what kind of room you are getting. They are not the traditional two double beds or one king like newer hotels. Their main rooms are one double or one queen bed. The front staff was able to get us a room with two double beds, but there was a price increase.
Review 77:We loved the El Rey Inn. Beautiful grounds, and friendly staff. A friend and I were vacationing there. I sometimes travel alone and would have felt very safe if I had been alone. Many of the guests seemed to be more "mature". We didn't notice any children, but we were there during the week and during school session.
Review 78:Can't think of anything not to like.
Review 79:Had friendly, helpful staff even before we got there who helped us over the phone and often after our arrival. Loved the grounds and breakfast room.
Review 80:I liked the quiet relaxed atmosphere El Rey always provides Have been going to El Rey and the Alamo Motel since 1976. It's amazingly quiet for being on a busy thoroughfare. Pantry Restaurant nearby is excellent and can be walked to. Staff accommodated a reasonable flex with the check in time due to a wedding we had to attend.
Review 81:All of the pillows were too "fat". I like a fairly flat pillow, but that's just me.
Review 82:Grounds are beautiful and inviting. Staff is very friendly, courteous. Best of all, it's located only a few steps from The Pantry, Santa Fe's best restaurant, bar none.
Review 83:Very limited services. More like a B&B. Very few services in the neighborhood, such as bars and restaurants within walking distance.
Review 84:The hot tub was excellent, as was the breakfast.
Review 85:Issues with WIFI, hot tub was only warm and not enough electrical outlets. Also we stayed an extra night and our key wasn't changed so we had to go to the front desk to get it re-programmed. A few more hangers in the closet would be appreciated.
Review 86:On the whole we were delighted with our stay at the El Rey. The front desk people were extremely helpful recommending restaurants etc. The place has an old school charm and we felt it was good value and convenient .
Review 87:The room was a basic motel room. It was very dark because you can't open the drapes on the window that faced the corridor. The breakfast was bland. While the tortilla was nice and hot, I didn't know what to eat with it.
Review 88:The garden was pretty but too bad we didn't sleep there.
Review 89:It's a bit far out from Santa Fe itself & not many restaurants within walking distance.
Review 90:Really pretty hotel in a nice style. Rooms were comfortable and looked like they'd been recently renovated.
Review 91:Our room was very shabby, needing painting, bathroom door needed to be replaced. I realize that building was built in the 40's but needs some serious updating.
Review 92:Grounds are lovely. Have stayed there several times in the past and always had a beautiful room. Very charming. Convenient.
Review 93:Breakfast was poor, the matress was uncomfortable and they would not allow you to select the kind of room prior to arrival.
Review 94:Staff was friendly and the location was good
Review 95:Rooms didn't look like website. We looked at 4 rooms before we decided on one. AC was in bathroom.
Review 96:Location was good. Staff very helpful. The property itself was very pretty.
Review 97:We had a hard time getting in and out in my crew cab dually with a car hauler trailer attached and the Manager complained to us about our parking spot(s) after being told it was ok to park there. Ended up having to park in front of the office after being harassed all morning by the manager and staff as we were out for the day doing our thing because we will be later wasn't good enough.
Review 98:Our upstairs room with a private entrance and deck and view of the front garden was great. Nice clean and roomy space with a fridge.
Review 99:Tight fit in some cases + well-worn facilities.
Review 100:The grounds + surrounds. The character of the rooms. The friendliness and flexibility of the staff. Great environment for relaxation.
Review 101:Free breakfast is fair (but it's free!)
Review 102:Quiet Beautiful grounds with flowers, artwork Nice pools Proximity to The Pantry restaurant Proximity to SFUAD Short drive to downtown Santa Fe
Review 103:Staying at El Rey was an experience we did not expect. From check-in to check-out the quality of service was superb. Our room was perfect. Maria, in housekeeping, provided outstanding service. The breakfast staff, Pete, Alice and Lilly made sure we were well taken care of. The fact it is not in the heart of Santa Fe made our visit that much more enjoyable. The location was close enough to make travel into Santa Fe easy, without the hassle of being downtown. Best value in town!
Review 104:-Bathroom was really small with door in the way of the toilet -Hotel room seemed kind of cheesy
Review 105:-Cost -Free breakfast -Pool/jacuzzi/sauna available -Staff friendly -Free parking
Review 106:Could do with a few more rails in the right place. Photos of bathroom lay out should be available on their website so you can judge its right for your disability level.
Review 107:Good wheelchair access and roll in shower with useable toilet. Nice character design and homely.
Review 108:Breakfast was somewhat meager - not enough choices for special diet needs
Review 109:Charming decor, great outdoor area, wonderful spa area, helpful people at the front desk.
Review 110:pool was not so clean, WIFI was not functioning on the second day or our stay, but was fine on the first.
Review 111:All of the above, plus the preserved historic quality and lovley grounds make it an oasis within the busy city. We would return in a heartbeat!
Review 112:Not many tv channels(we don't watch at home and were ready for The Daily Show). Probably better for us anyway.
Review 113:Playground, pool, hot tub, gardens, sitting areas= happy family. This is a gem. Walking distance to Thai Vegan and a gluten free bakery.
Review 114:There wasn't anything we didn't like. However, maybe they could have offered a few other things for breakfast, i.e., fresh fruit (besides bananas), scrambled eggs.
Review 115:Loved the suite we were in. The grounds are incredible-lots of trees, fountains, flowers, foliage, beautiful pool and jacuzzi area, and close enough to downtown area.
Review 116:The mattress was a little too firm but we are used to a mattress we adjust.
Review 117:A charming old world Inn, yet clean and comfortable. Our room was tucked in the back and very quiet. it was furnished with some unusual pieces which gave it additional charm. The breakfast was more than we expected with a personally warmed tortilla and fixings. The breakfast room is a surprise, picture worthy. The staff was very helpful and told us about The Pantry, next door that served wonderful Mexican food...there was even music. We would definitely stay there again.
Review 118:just a shame it is not walking distance to the city center.
Review 119:It was so peaceful and spacious for our family. It was so nice for the kids to have their own space, and for my husband and I to sit on the porch while they were sleeping. We loved the pool and the breakfast was delicious. The staff were charming.
Review 120:I loved staying at this charming retro 1940s style motel with all of the important modern conveniences. The grounds are lovely, the service helpful and friendly. Re the wi fi, most business people now carry gadgets that allow computer connections through cell towers, so wi fi issues are no big deal. I will return for pleasure or business.
Review 121:A few of the small garden areas could have used a little attention but mostly is just beautiful!
Review 122:The front desk accomodated my request to change rooms without hesitation, the cleanliness of the property and rooms, the pool is great, the breakfast staff is especially kind and at your service. Have stayed here many times and is always a pleasure.
Review 123:Mattress is getting a bit worn. Wi-Fi does not work well.
Review 124:Original room with local flavour. Property overall (landscaping, flowers, trees, shrubs - just beautiful). Beautiful pool! Really relaxing place with lots of charm, not far from downtown (7 min by car).
Review 125:Cozy, charming, and clean. Great vibe.
Review 126:Convenient location - roomy - great staff
Review 127:Nothing..
Review 128:Great place and staff..will come back again...it's a keeper...
Review 129:Quaint and staff was great
Review 130:Zero
Review 131:The people!
