Reviews for The Driftwood Hotel

Review 1:You knew when anyone turned the water on or flushed the toilet.

Review 2:Great access to downtown Juneau from the hotel and to the SOB (state office building, great acronym). Friendly staff.

Review 3:nothing. This is one of the hidden treasures of Juneau.. walking distance to the IGA Food Store, Salvation Army Church and Store, and a mini mart .. not far from downtown.. you will love this place

Review 4:The staff is awesome.. every single one of the staff is clearly been hand picked and it shows..

Review 5:The heat in the room didn't seem adjustable, but it was nonetheless quite pleasant. I didn't address it with the staff as it wasn't bothersome. Had to call for airport pickup, shuttle doesn't run continuously--recommend calling when flight touches down.

Review 6:Pleasant and easy folks to get along with. Basic, but for Juneau, AK quite comfortable. On site launder, thanks! Bed was very comfortable and room warm in November. Staff was very helpful and I would certainly stay there again.

Review 7:When we booked, the room said 1 bed, kitchenette and a pullout couch. The room we were given for that price had no couch and no room for any floor space for any extras. We upgraded for a fee to have a couch and extra space, but the couch still didn't pull out. Although the staff did bring rollouts.

Review 8:Staff were friendly, nice comfortable bed, plenty of big fluffy towels, and an adequate kitchenette.

Review 9:Appreciated the friendly staff, the shuttle service from/to airport and from/to ferry terminal. Especially liked that remote unable to set the TV very loud. Loved the freezers in the lobby.

Review 10:I'm sure I was right above the office so I heard talking and laughing alot, even early in the morning. Lots of truck noises early in the morning.

Review 11:The bed was very very comfortable. The hot water was there seconds after you turned the spigot on.

Review 12:Transfers from the airport and ferry terminals was available 24 hours a day. Friendly staff to greet you when we arrived, and room was available very early in the day.

Review 13:It is beyond dated and old. It needs a remodel so badly and was like staying in a motel in the 60's or 70's. Very depressing inside. Glad it was just for one night.

Review 14:We love that there is a free shuttle service to/from ferry and airport, no matter what time. It's also in a great, centralized location and had a fabulous restaurant for breakfast, right next door. The staff was really friendly. The shower had great water pressure.

Review 15:Even if i asked to complete my bill with the company's name beside my name (as is writen in the credit card used for payment)they didn't do it. I sent them two mails for this and they did not be able to write two words beside my name on the bill. For this reason i have to pay from my own founds even if i used the company's credit card, wich is wrong.

Review 16:Clean, near downtown, free shuttle from/to airport. Good wifi. Looks more as a motel. Near stores.

Review 17:Free shuttle to and from ferry at any time both day and night. Veryclose to where the cruise ships come in where all the action is. GoodChinese restrauant next door as well as iga supermarket.

Review 18:Sleep quality - design of hotel is such that thoughtless people can cluster on the walkways outside other people's rooms and make lots of noise at unsociable hours. Our first night we had extended loud talking at 3am and again at 4am (possibly fisherfolk going out for the Salmon Derby). Second night we had socialising on the walkways through the evening until after 1am. Hotel emailed ahead to ask if we wanted to book shuttle (good), but two emails to address given got no response (not good).

Review 19:Shuttle to/from ferry/airport included. Microwave available in lobby area for those in rooms without. Good location - walkable to a range of sights, big supermarket next door.

Review 20:Concerned about room security. Location close to local residents

Review 21:Friendly front staff and manager(s). Greeted by first name. My only recommendation the room should have a small safe. .good location and clean facility. They provide free shuttle service to ferry or airport.

Review 22:Hotel is located within walking distance of downtown Juneau, a couple of blocks from a grocery store and just across the street from a city bus stop. We arrived very early in the day on the ferry and staff made extra efforts to let us check into our room early in the day.

Review 23:Nothing bad to say.

Review 24:Outstanding location. Manager went above and beyond to assist with check-in a day early. Can't say enough about how helpful they were! Breakfast was not included but was reasonably priced and good.

Review 25:There was some miscommunication between office staff and the shuttle driver re pick up time.

Review 26:Great proximity to town and bus. Great having the shuttle service from and to ferry and airport.

Review 27:There was no service once you checked in...like no toilet paper refilled or new towels but we don't mind being left alone...

Review 28:The location is great!

Review 29:confirmed transport from ferry to hotel twice - nonetheless I didn't make it in to the pick up list. Room very basic - not even a refrigerator and np clock-radio

Review 30:convenient location

Review 31:The mattresses were straw sacks. The cleaning service was poor. One day they put on a new roll of toilet paper and removed the trash and did nothing else.

Review 32:We liked the location as well as the timely pick up and drop off service to the ferry or airport.

Review 33:very noisy, thin walls. Room had a wet spot on carpet and phone did not work. Wound up having to change rooms. Check out process a shambles. Wrong amount billed and had to be changed.

Review 34:The location and free shuttle to/from Ferry.

Review 35:We had ordered a crib and when they did't have one available, they went out and got a pack n play. Appreciated pickup and delivery at airport and ferry Walking distance to downtown and a grocery store that has an eat-in area

Review 36:My only complaint regards communication regarding shuttle service between hotel management (and those working the registration desk) and Dolphin Charters seems to be spotty. I believe, in past years, perhaps with previous owners, the Driftwood has offered shuttle service from the smaller harbor to the hotel in exchange for Dolphin Charter encouragement of clients to use the Driftwood. Five of us stayed one night before our trip, and I stayed for a second night after we returned. My information was that a shuttle would be available from harbor to hotel (a trip of 5- 10 minutes one way), but was informed, when I called about a pick-up, that shuttle service was only from the ferry building or the airport. Dolphin Charter personnel understood that shuttle service was in place. It is important that both sides be clear about the shuttle availability, so that passengers and hotel staff aren't caught in the middle of this confusion. Although staff did adjust and pick me up, it was clear that my shuttle need, even though I had mentioned it before we left for 10 days, was unexpected and a problem to be solved.

Review 37:The morning staff was quick to check and see if my room was ready before the regular check-in time, and let me know as soon as it was ready so that I didn't have to wait all day to find a place to put my things and rest a bit (I arrived in Juneau in the morning). They also were quick to store my bags until I formally checked in. John did an excellent job of shuttling me to and from the airport, and from my final berth in Harris Harbor across the street from the high school, which was much appreciated.

Review 38:Kitchen needed to have a dishcloth of some kind, or paper towels.

Review 39:good location, very nice staff, terrific shuttle service to the ferry dock, quiet, clean.

Review 40:Booked a 2-bedroom room and had email confirmation that each room would contain 1 queen bed and 1 roll-away. Not so on arrival. Had 1 queen and 2 twins. 2 roll-aways eventually provided. Had to request Kleenex. Stayed 2 nights - no housekeeping services. Staff explanations: requested room configuration not written down; low on supplies; new management; housekeeping has 62 rooms to clean, may have run out of time if room not available (housekeeping staff was right outside the door when the room was vacated for the day.) Had a 3rd floor room and lots of luggage - elevator would have been nice.

Review 41:Location was good - close to historic downtown in one direction and the post office in the other. Lengthy wait for breakfast at Sandpiper Cafe on premises but well worth it - generous portions and reasonable prices.

Review 42:This is an old motel building. I stayed 2 separate nights at same rate: once I got full kitchen, other none. It was overpriced, but not as much as other hotels in Juneau.

Review 43:There is great value in free transit to and from airport and ferries, which I found on time. Museum next door is closed for at least this year; try the SeaAlaska Heritage exhibit on short walk to town. IGA grocer down the block is handy.

Review 44:Initial receptionist was not overly helpful/informed.

Review 45:Later staffing was very helpful, and shuttle to/from airport was a great bonus. Suite was spacious and well equipped. Easy walk to centre of Juneau.

Review 46:Reserved a studio room with a separate couch and living area well in advance and paid the reservation deposit. When they checked us in they put us in a small basic queen bed room without even telling us. No apologies or anything. Went back to the office to complain and the response was tough luck, we don't have one available. I know it's Juneau and hotels rooms are tight, but I'd look elsewhere next time.

Review 47:Location near downtown

Review 48:We had to wait an hour for the room to be ready.

Review 49:One of the front desk guys was very friendly and helpful, making suggestions for what to do while in Juneau.

Review 50:Construction right outside our window and obstruction of view of the canal.

Review 51:Great location, WIFI worked well, kitchen, good size rooms, liked the living room, easy parking, store and restaurant very close.

Review 52:The front desk staff really let this place down. Indifferent at best,at worst rude or just nonexistent! No interest whatsoever in customer service.

Review 53:The shuttle to/from ferry is useful. The shuttle drivers are fabulous and really do their best to help the guests.

Review 54:Staff was very friendly, made us feel welcome. While the room furnishings were dated the room was pleasant, very clean, and quiet. The shuttle to and from the ferry went flawlessly.

Review 55:There is constantly ticking noise from the ceiling, most likely coming from their plumbing. Despite the area and hotel being quiet, the ticking noise was enough to make me unable to sleep well.

Review 56:Quiet area (construction activities of the museum at the back of the hotel was stopped for the weekend we were there), cleanliness, comfort, nice interior

Review 57:Noise of the people vacating early morning by using the metal access stairs.

Review 58:Location great, easy walk to centre of town. Shuttle availability was great and accommodating. Rates very good. Bed and facilities good. Laundromat located on site.

Review 59:The construction next door started at 6AM. There was no mention of this on line and no reduction in cost.Very, Very annoying. Ear plugs were not a solution.

Review 60:Close to IGA. Ten minute walk to downtown

Review 61:Unfortunately, the thin walls and floors meant we could hear others at times.

Review 62:The Driftwood Hotel is great value. It's not fancy, but its friendly & helpful staff, downtown location and useful and clean facilities make up for that. The shuttle is an added bonus that's worth heaps.

Review 63:Very disorganized. At office front staff Felt dirty, and would rather have slept in my tent. Expensive for what was provided. One of our group had bites afterwards..

Review 64:Shuttle operators were nice and flexible

Review 65:I stayed twice, two separate times. First occasion, fridge wasn't working. Got different room the next morning. Second stay: bed sheet was covered with (head) hair. Asked for and got a new, clean sheet, which I put on myself, offering to do so.

Review 66:location; close to grocery store and good b'fast restaurant; free shuttle. I've stayed here every summer for 5 or 6 years.

Review 67:Room cleaning hit/miss, esp with the limited towel replacements we requested by leaving on floor...they were not removed. I called and was assured access to bath thru common area, not thru another bedroom, not as promised.

Review 68:Free shuttle to/from airport was great. Front desk staff friendly.

Review 69:The rooms were outdated, but clean. The twin beds are way too small for two people to sleep in.

Review 70:We found the van driver John to be very delightful and entertaining. The staff also was very pleasant and helpful.

Review 71:Windows face the wrong way. Would have been great if they faced the water.

Review 72:Location, location, location. Having small kitchen was nice. Building itself is old, views are nothing to write about. But unless you're going to spend a lot of time indoors, it's a good option.

Review 73:We happened to hit a rare juneau heat wave. There is no air and poor airflow (can only crank open windows a bit) so it got quite hot in the room.

Review 74:Good location, clean, great price.

Review 75:The original rooms they booked for us were being painted when we arrived so they up-graded us to nicer rooms for the same price, which was great, except that this somehow did not get recorded so another couple was also given the same room. All was straitened out very quickly tho and everyone came out happy.

Review 76:Our rooms were very clean. The staff were very helpful and we were in walking distance of all the downtown area. The Sand Piper Cafe, next door, serves an excellent breakfast.

Review 77:Location! Easy walking to restaurants, a grocery store, the State Office Bldg., the Federal Bldg., and downtown. Not plush, but quite decent facilities.

Review 78:Noisy. Can hear guest above walking around. Booked shuttle back to airport and reservation could not be found.

Review 79:Close to downtown and to book attractions.

Review 80:Everything was fine.

Review 81:The staff was very accommodating for helping us get our luggage to the location and to change us to a first floor room so we didn't have to take luggage up the stairs.

Review 82:I don't expect any hotel to be perfectly quiet. But not to note that there is huge construction going on outside your rooms is very unethical. By not doing this you will make more money BUT you will have people like me posting a warning about ever staying there! James Brock

Review 83:I did not like the first night in the Hotel I had asked for a two bed room and then applied for an upgrade and was upgraded to a one bed room. One of us slept in the bed and the other on the couch. The hotel was booked up so no room to swap out of this room to another. The other thing that happened was that the room leaked, The bathroom had a huge patch of water on it by morning and I could hear drip drip drip through the night from where I have no idea. In the morning the carpet in the room was soaked, puddling it was so full of water. My friend called the front desk about this problem and reported it and the night person who was on duty basically asked her what she thought he could do about it.. in other words disinterested and rude.

Review 84:Actually after that first nights experience the hotel came good. Front desk Manager Heidi was extremely helpful. We where given a discount and an upgrade to a 2 bedroomed room with voila... two beds. Nice clean comfortable room with walk in shower, lovely comfortable beds. Parking at the door. Central to downtown. I would stay here again. Pretty sure night one was a one off because the Day Hotel Staff could not have been nicer.

Review 85:We loved the shuttle service they provide. Our driver, Big Jim Colombo was quite a character, and got us to and from the airport on time. We didn't eat at the Sandpiper Cafe while we were there, but heard rave reviews about if from others we met after we left.

Review 86:The free shuttle was definitely a selling point. Laundry facility was great. A grocery store with a fantastic salad/soup bar was practically next door. The mountain view was spectacular. Downtown was an easy walk away.

Review 87:room was too hot despite heat being turned off. no proper ventilation, no fan, no airconditioning. No room cleaning before 5:30 pm on either of 2 days. we were gone from 9 am to late afternoon on both days. Asked to pay for room in cash and advised 2 different front desk staff of this, but when checked out in early am the room charge had been put on credit card, and no way to reverse it until accountant came later.( too late for us as we had a plane to catch).

Review 88:Location was excellent.Room was large. Shower excellent. Free shuttle to airport

Review 89:Small bathroom, it worked OK but it was small.

Review 90:The free shuttle to and from the airport. The views were great and close to downtown and all the restaurants. The room was very comfortable and clean. Most of the tour companies would pick up at the hotel or just a short walk away.

Review 91:I especially liked the free shuttle service to the airport and ferry. We arrived at 3:45am and it was a great comfort to have the van waiting for us.

Review 92:watch out for homeless mentally ill and alcoholics, esp at night - all over downtown Juneau. Lock your door at all times. I was ok with the hotel but those who want spotless and modern will be disappointed.

Review 93:staff were very helpful and friendly, although a bit young and untrained Location for getting to restaurants and nightlife was great. Comfy and quiet. We stayed in an "apartment" with kitchenette- would be a nice choice for families on a budget

Review 94:It was quiet, short walking distance to stores, restaurants, museums, with a beautiful view of the mountains.there is a complimentary van to transport to airpirt or ferry. The staff are all very friendly. One block from public bus line

Review 95:The lack of amenities, confusion with our pick up, baby needs, broken ice machine, lack of general knowledge with the front desk staff

Review 96:Location The shuttle driver

Review 97:TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRRIBLE shuttle driver. Basically ruined the entire experience for me. He's not bad at driving, but the negative conversations he makes you engage in are disturbing and it put a huge amount of anxiety and negativity on the beginning and end of my Juneau stay.

Review 98:Was extremely convenient to have the kitchenette. All of the staff (with the huge exception of the shuttle driver) were extremely warm and helpful.

Review 99:Originally tried to charge 31 more than originally booking including bed bed tax - seemed difficult to find original reservation

Review 100:Alaska Native Friendly Airport shuttle Location

Review 101:Hotel restaurant closes at 2:00pm for the day Dinner hard to find. Major construction next door (temporary). Long distance to air port and ferry terminal.

Review 102:Convenient to tourist center of Juneau as well as state offices and water front. Bus service nearby.

Review 103:Room smelt musty. No lift (had to struggle down two flights of stairs with my suitcase). Rude receptionist rang to say that I was 5 minutes late for my shuttle to ferry. Processed the payment in my absence and refused to reverse charges on my credit card. Wanted to pay cash, but was not given this option. Kept telling me that I was late (10 mins) and that I was keeping people waiting (one woman in reception area). Not exactly rush hour at 04:40. Given this zero customer services with this guy, I would not recommend this motel to anyone.

Review 104:John (driver) was really informative, entertaining and helpful. Greg (receptionist) was also very helpful. Assisted with my suitcase up two floors.

Review 105:small refrigerator & microwave would be helpful

Review 106:shuttle service- connected with ferries & airport several times; drivers were waiting for us very early in the AM & very late at night; stored luggage safely during a 2-day cruise; next door restaurant convenient & good; located away from bustling wharf area with short walk to stores, sights, etc.

Review 107:Location. Not close enough to walk to places we wanted to see. Someone took the take-away breakfast that was prepared for us. Managers were aloof- (wife seemed overworked). Laundry room was a mess. Advertised bicycles were inoperable.

Review 108:Room was comfortable. Bathroom was convenient (down the hall) & clean. Manager (lady) made an effort to accommodate our needs, esp. with box breakfasts. Local information provided. Available washer & dryer.

Review 109:A bit out of the way in not nice area. Old style motel with walk up to 3rd floor. But was clean and comfortable for a budget accomodation.

Review 110:Free shuttle service was big money saver. Restaurant great for breakfast.

Review 111:I really can't think of a single thing to complain about.

Review 112:Location is close to downtown. Pick up and drop off at ferry and airport. Excellent staff. Sandpiper restaurant right next door.

Review 113:Walls of rooms thin so can here neighbours.I was not unduly bothered by this as hotel nothing like full

Review 114:Free pick up from airport and back was good for me. Sandpaper cafe next to hotel was excellent for breakfast

Review 115:State Museum closed for renovation. Not Driftwood's doing at all. 100% satisfied with hotel.

Review 116:Couldn't ask for a better location! easy walk to town without being in the midst of the masses. Small problem with room heat and Mgr. Donna immediately rectified beyond our expectations. Shuttle driver John gave us excellent tips on foods, places, etc. A++++`

Review 117:Lights didn't work on one circuit in the apartment. Apartment smelt a little musty downstairs room was fine

Review 118:Showers Clean Helpful with early arrival

Review 119:Waited nearly an hour and a half at the airport for the shuttle to pick me up. On the way home from Alaska, I also had a tight turn-around, and stayed at a hotel within walking distance of the airport. I discovered that many other people had done the same thing. Evidently the shuttle staffing for many hotels isn't really adequate in high season.

Review 120:This is a basic motor-court-motel type establishment. Clean, with a decent bed.

Review 121:We stayed at this hotel on 2 different nights in one week. The windows were broken and would not open which made it way too HOT to sleep; no working thermostat; small, old T.V.'s with bad pictures. The second time we stayed there that week, the T.V. was on the floor with a bunch of cables and was not connected until WE did so! There were no trial size shampoos and such - just a small bar of soap. The only good thing about this place is the staff and the shuttle driver, John.

Review 122:The staff was very friendly.

Review 123:Do not accept rooms 217 or 218 if you want to sleep. They are right above the office and the night employee appears to invite his friends over and have a loud get together. Also people start checking in around 5 and 6 sometimes and you can hear them. Just normal conversation can be heard easily enough to wake you. Other than that it's not bad for the money.

Review 124:I missed some of the old staff, having stayed at the Driftwood a number of times. There is never shampoo in the rooms.

Review 125:Location away from cruise ship crowds and close to grocery store; easy waling distance downtown; free shuttle.

Review 126:Seemed to have some difficulty with the booking, but everything worked out.

Review 127:Friendly helpful staff, central location, close to town, shuttle to and from hotel. very convenient

Review 128:We tried to organise an airport pickup prior to our arrival. When we arrived at the airport we had to phone them. They arrived about 15 minutes later. However they then drove us to the ferry terminal to pick up a bunch of other people, then we went back to the airport to pick up some more people, so it took ages for us to actually get to the hotel. If we had known this we would have caught a taxi. Also once we arrived at the hotel, we had to wait a while to check in because of all the people they had picked up. When we go to our room, it had not been cleaned. So had to go back to reception for them to assign us another room.

Review 129:It WAS old, needs a little updating. Kitchen and TV needed a lift.

Review 130:It was clean, good location, loved the characters that work there. It was an overall pleasant experience and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. They were accommodating and shuttled us where we needed to be. Grocery store less than a block away with great selection. I did not come to Alaska for the room. You could also walk to a number of great restaurants, museums

Review 131:We arrived very late b/c the ferry was late. To get to room had to navigate around neighbor seated on balcony w/laptop playing music and singing along w/a drunk friend. Room was very stuffy but no internal fan and opening window let in even more of neighborly noise. 1st night "sleep" left much to be desired; 2nd and 3rd nights better but last morning had to arise very early for ferry. Motel symptomatic of our mixed experiences in Juneau.

Review 132:The room was clean and the motel location was excellent and allowed me to take a walking tour of downtown while my son slept.

Review 133:The museum behind the hotel is being demolished and rebuilt, so there was a lot of noise quite early in the morning. Not the fault of the hotel obviously, but you might like to take earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Also had to wait over 40 mins for shuttle when we arrived on ferry, despite pre-arranging with hotel AND calling them on the day when we arrived.

Review 134:The location was great, a few blocks from downtown and near bus station, but just far enough away from the cruise ship chaos. Free shuttle bus from ferry terminal was handy. Good kitchen, with enough equipment to cook a full meal. On-site laundromat, good if you are on a longer-trip. Helpful staff. Near supermarket, deli and liquor store. Tourist literature in room. Large rooms.

Review 135:Rooms were small, furniture was ancient. Our friends were in a room that had been "remodeled" with newer furnishings, but it didn't help much. A lot of money to pay for the convenience of being downtown. All the hotels outside of downtown seem to operate shuttles and the city bus system works well.
