Reviews for Firehouse Hostel
Review 1:My room was very cold. Too cold even when it was almost 70 degrees outside. When the temperature dropped to 50 and then almost freezing, there was heat at first, but someone turned it off, I suppose, so at night I was freezing even with pants and socks on. Breakfast wasn't always ready by 7:30, which might be a problem when you are on a schedule. Kitchen/eating area are very, very small for such a big hostel. The policy of quiet time midnight-8am is not enforced, so people were incredibly loud at 1am and 3am.
Review 2:Excellent location right in the center. Very friendly staff. Bathrooms clean enough for a shared bathroom. Breakfast not very big or interesting, but it is included, which is important for someone who needs to be somewhere by 8:30am. Kitchen available. Bunk beds with small walls provide a little bit of privacy in an 8-person room.
Review 3:The rooms were very cramped with 6 people in them.
Review 4:The location was perfect. The bed was comfortable. The staff were always available and really helpful.
Review 5:Showers were disgusting, but that is common for hostels
Review 6:The location, the theme, the design, the hidden bar on the ground floor, the lounge area, the other travelers. Overall a very cool place to spend a weekend in Austin.
Review 7:It was too noisy from the downstairs bar and that can affect the quality of sleep. There was also a strange smell that I couldn't stand in the building that I had no idea where it came from because the place was clean.
Review 8:I liked that it was clean, the location was close to my conference, economical price, and staff was nice and pleasant.
Review 9:Too was a bit cold although bathroom was nice and toasty. Breakfast challenging for anyone who doesn't eat wheat.
Review 10:Friendly, helpful staff, good location for my business, clean, entrance a bit funky, music from bar loud, but not too bad up on the 3rd floor.
Review 11:The beds were a mish mash. Some were lumpy bumpy and awful, the pillows in particular were really bad. Some of the bunks were so old and creaky. More storage lockers would be a welcome addition. The bathrooms were ok, could have been better.
Review 12:Great location, so close to everything. Kitchen facilities were great, complimentary breakfast was generous with lots of options. Very clean. Staff were friendly and generally quite helpful.
Review 13:Crazy affordable for the area, great breakfast, nice bathroom, great staff!
Review 14:Not crazy about being on the top bunk, and always an issue sharing space with strangers.
Review 15:The hostel was well located, service very helpful, rooms and bathrooms perfectly clean and hosts very respectful in silent hours. Nothing to complain about. Staying there was a good decision. You can not ask for more for such a low cost.
Review 16:Rion was right on brazos with windows facing 6th street. Very noisy until 3am. But if you like a great downtown experience it's worth it.
Review 17:This hostel was in a perfect location to walk the Texas Capitol district, walk to 6th Street bars/restaurants, theatres, and Rainey St food truck and bar scene. The Mamager Annette was informative, cultured and very kind to everyone. It was my first hostel experience and lots of hostel experienced friends were made and said this was excellent too. Great experience!
Review 18:We stayed in the standard girls dorm, and while everything was certainly clean enough, the bunk mattresses were not comfortable. Not bad enough to keep me from getting decent sleep though.
Review 19:Being located right off of 6th street was super convenient and made getting around very easy. We just used one of the hostel parking passes for a garage around the corner and kept the car parked all weekend!
Review 20:The staff was very attentive, and friendly. They had overbooked my room, and gave me an upgrade at no cost to me. The lounge on the first floor, behind the bookcase, was a great spot to meet people from all over the world. The drinks were cold, and the prices were good compared to the places in that area. I will stay there again for sure.
Review 21:The location is superb for the bars of 6th street, and it's not far to get to the University and the football stadium on foot either. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean and the breakfast was excellent.
Review 22:The air con wasn't working properly while I was staying and although the staff were working hard to get it sorted it was a very hot few nights!
Review 23:Amazing breakfast provided! Great location Staff were really friendly and helpful. Bag storage free and easy
Review 24:The bar downstairs is amazing. The whole facility is amazing and it's the best hostel I've been to. I have traveled to loads of hostels all over Europe and Asia and this one was one of the best.
Review 25:So loud at night, extremely hot- AC doesn't work or doesn't exist. Didn't sleep more than 3 hours each night/day because of this
Review 26:Great location near 6th street- in the middle of all parts of Austin. Great staff as well.
Review 27:Women's dorm got a tid bit warm, but not unbearable.
Review 28:The staff was absolutely awesome and extremely helpful. Perfect location. This was exactly what I was looking for, but still exceeded my expectations.
Review 29:I've called the hostel 5 more times for pre-authorization of my credit card since I booked it for my girlfriend. However they did not reply even the service of Booking.com had sent a request form to them. At last, my girlfriend paid by cash and no charge from my credit card. When the day my girlfriend got the hostel, the staff at the front did not even know it was my girlfriend's staying, not mine!
Review 30:Nice location, comfortable bed, good breakfast. High C/P ratio
Review 31:I have stayed at youth hostels before and the average youth hostel at this price and with this location is usually way cleaner and has less outdated furniture.
Review 32:There was a problem with my reservation, but the staff bent over backwards to get me set up with a room.
Review 33:The staff was great! Kate is wonderful, and she bent over backwards to make your stay a good experience. I can't say enough.
Review 34:the location was brilliant and the cost of the stay was really good value. Breakfast was also really good, loads of choice. The lounge bar downstairs was nice too.
Review 35:It's extremely loud at night due to nearby nightspots, so earplugs are a must. The rooms need a deep cleaning. Generally needs a bit of ugrading.
Review 36:The breakfast pastries were spectacular. Location is close to great spots. General vibe was nice and there is room to hang out and socialize.
Review 37:People are very nice and smiling. The 6th street is just amazing so you can just grab drinks in a bar and then come back very easily to the hostel. You have a whole food (15minutes walking) and the kitchen is vey cool so it's really a pleasure and a good solution. The bus stop from the airport in very close too so easy to find the hostel.
Review 38:Hit in late so I got the top bunk , the mattess was mot comfortable. It sagged im the middle Although people tried to be quiet lots of people coming in late leaving early trying to sleep late.
Review 39:Best location in town, a crossed the street from the Driskill Hotel one block from 6th and Congress. It is an easy walk to everything in downtown Austin. It is a fun friendly place for solo traveler with friendly staff and guests. Everyone willing to share experiences and travel tips. Amazing breakfast of fruits and fresh pastries.
Review 40:No complaints at all. Easy to get to from airport, right in the middle of the city. Great staff and great area. If you aren't ok with street noise, do not book! Outside of that? 100% awesome.
Review 41:Wi-fi could be better, it's especially awful in the penthouse suite Not really much they can do about street noise (especially during SXSW) but maybe better sound insulation?
Review 42:The staff was very helpful and friendly The breakfast (which is included) is very generous: 4 kinds of cereal, lots of different breads and bagels, cream cheese, jam, milk AND almond milk!, oatmeal, fresh fruit, baked goods, coffee and tea Everyone I spoke to said they would stay here again and so would I They supply towels and face cloths, free earplugs too! Easy to meet people - seems to have attracted a good crowd
Review 43:The worst noise ever. We didn't sleep first night, and barely the next. I sleep through anything, so didn't give much thought to previous reviews re: sound. First night so much music from street, bars, and music halls. For 2 hours from 4-6 am a massive truck sat idling/on in the ally. Was so loud. Next night was better, but music from show downstairs was loud and clear many stories up.
Review 44:Nice facilities compared to other hostels I've stayed in. Great location. Staff seemed really friendly.
Review 45:I was in town running in the half marathon and a little nervous about staying in a hostel. The firehouse was great! I had no trouble checking in, the other guests were friendly and courteous and the staff was great! The atmosphere was awesome with the lounge next door and the decor made it feel like a quirky hotel not a hostel at all. I had no trouble sleeping and everything was very clean! I would recommend the firehouse to anyone wanting to explore Austin and be close to the downtown excitement but not wanting to pay an arm and a leg for a hotel.
Review 46:Firstly this hostel is not worthy of a 7.8 rating. Don't be fooled. I'm guessing it's called the fire house hostel because people run around until 4 o'clock in the morning like the place is on fire. Strap yourself in and plan for a night of no sleep if you're staying here. Most of the guests weren't backpackers etc but people from Austin itself. If I was to build a time machine I would travel back a month in time and firstly say to myself - how have you managed to build a time machine seeing as you were never good at Science at school. Secondly, when you think you might book the FireHouse hostel in Austin, give it a miss.
Review 47:The reception was very friendly and the breakfast was good. Found the wi-fi was pretty solid too.
Review 48:WiFi was *marginally* slow, but scarcely worth commenting on, I'm being picky.
Review 49:Fab location, great amenities and staff, you couldn't want for more in Austin in a hostel.
Review 50:the mattress was very poor. You could feel every single spring. Also, the pillow was way too thin, using my arm as a pillow was probably better.
Review 51:I love the location! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the free breakfast was amazing!! :) I would definitely stay here again.
Review 52:Temperatures varied in rooms on cold nights. Definitely more heat should be expected. Why have a nice place in so many ways, but then end up with everyone miserable on temperature?
Review 53:Staff, location, bathrooms, cleanliness, patronage
Review 54:The temperature of the room 2 days/nights it was really hot and the last one it was so cold i almost froze. Noises of other people in the room and light. Bring earplugs and eye cover. The bed matress is really too soft and was not really comfortable. I would go for the wooden bed next time.
Review 55:Luxurious level for a hostel. I liked the breakfast which was varied and the helpful staff. I also likef the hidden bar which is also not as loud as expected.
Review 56:The blankets were to small that they provided. Take your own, if you want something bigger than a throw blanket.
Review 57:The location was amazing, the staff and the bar downstairs! It obviously isnt a hotel, it is a hostel don't forget that! it was clean, close to everything, and had clean sheets. Couldn't complain, had everything you need for a short stay.
Review 58:The staff did warn that the WiFi wasn't great, but that doesn't adequately mitigate the inconvenience. The showers broke while I was there. And, the mattress was one of the worst I have ever slept on.
Review 59:The staff was very helpful and friendly. They recommended activities and restaurants around the hostel. They get top marks for their professionalism. Also, their breakfast was pretty decent with plenty of options.
Review 60:A little noisy (from the music in the bar downstairs, entering through a bookcase door!) at night if you're used to silence, but I slept through it fine and enjoyed the vibes. For privacy, getting dressed in a tight 6-person-coed room has its challenges, but, again, it was fun for me. The 2nd floor urinal never flushed properly, but everything else was is good order, clean and lots of fresh clean towels.
Review 61:Location: Just off 6th St (with all the live music and night life), across the street from the awesome historic 5-star Driskill Hotel, 3 blocks from $1.50 bus to/from airport (or $3 for the all-day pass) which goes over the Congress St. bridge with the million bats (awesome at dusk), continues past the Capitol building (awesome tour and separate visitor center, free) and on to the University of Austin campus to the LBJ Library. It's also very close to the Austin Visitors' Center on 4th St. (different from the Capitol center), which has free city walking tours, which are GREAT. Price: The cheapest place I could find to stay, best value anywhere. Interesting people: From Singapore, Australia, Japan, Europe...there was also an indie film Fest going on during my stay that attracted folks from everywhere. Flexibility: The staff allowed me to leave my suitcase locked behind the counter for several hours after I'd checked out to be able sight-see before I left, and also allowed me to still take a shower and change clothes before catching my late-afternoon plane. Free continental-style breakfast, open kitchen. Free wifi available any time, with a complimentary desktop in the kitchen area as well, and hallway tables and couches with outlets on the 3rd floor. Each bunk has its own reading light. There was a padlockable (your own lock) area underneath the bottom bunk, but security was not a concern. I also kept a bicycle there, which was extremely useful for me (borrowed it from my daughter at UT), for groceries, sightseeing, getting to places quickly or for a quick $1 chicken sandwich at Wendy's a few blocks away (east on 7th) near the French Legation landmark. There are also bike rental stations everywhere. Lots of bike lanes and racks everywhere around town, no bike parking problems.
Review 62:I booked the mixed dormitory. The room was really small they don't really explain what your room will look like when you book the room. But it had 3 bunk beds so a total of 6 beds in the small cramped room. It was really hot they even had the window open but barely brought a breeze in the room. The window was open the whole night so it was hard to fall asleep with all the noise still on 6th. Then in the morning because the window was open you could hear people cutting hedges outside so you had no choice but to wake up early. I didn't think I would mind sharing a room with complete strangers but I realized I did and should of gotten ear plugs their phone alarms went off the whole night and they wouldn't hear it because they were either in some deep sleep or had ear plugs in. I was the only girl in the room good thing I went with my guy best friend or I would have felt really uncomfortable.
Review 63:Great location, literally you turn the corner and your right in the middle of 6th.
Review 64:the staff and the people who stay there are very friendly and everything around there is close restaurants bars it's a great place to enjoy your evening
Review 65:A little more welcoming by the staff would be a good thing :)
Review 66:Location was gr8 as most entertainment is on 6th St...Just around the corner. Walking distance to train station, 25 mins. Rooms were quiet and the Breakfast Awesome !!
Review 67:I didn't care to share a bathroom or a bedroom but i knew what i was in for when i signed up. We actually got lucky and had the bathroom n bedroom to ourselves through most of our stay. We only saw our roommates when it came time to go to bed.
Review 68:Staff was very polite, friendly and helpful. The atmesphere was great. I liked how they made u feel right at home. You also get to meet different people from different countries so that was nice.
Review 69:One of the toilets was out of service during the whole weekend and the breakfast was out of bagels on the last day. Other than that everything was really good.
Review 70:I most liked the staff and I hostel itself is pretty cool, clean and organized. I met friends who explored the city with me and had a great time while I stayed there. I really recommend this hostel.
