Reviews for Montvale Hotel

Review 1:The noise from other rooms was excessive. No parking. Queen bed was smaller than my queen at home.cold shower in the a.m. breakfast was a block away.

Review 2:Bed was comphy front desk staff was nice and pleasant to deal with. High ceilings were cool.

Review 3:Noisy with room on the front street, but the back was closer to the train tracks that goes thru downtown Spokane

Review 4:Timeless elegance. large desk, large bathroom fixtures

Review 5:the street traffic was noticeable, but understandable since it's an active part of town and I wouldn't change the location.

Review 6:solid, quiet, classy accomodations

Review 7:Could be a little cleaner, needs new carpeting, the painted walls were splotchy, no breakfast

Review 8:The ambiance, friendliness of the staff, location, spaciousness of the rooms, very comfortable bed.

Review 9:Staff not helpful at all. Parking is not available so you must use street parking meters that take coins. None were available at the hotel. Suggested I go run around to neighboring establishments to beg for coins. Asked if they would get some coins later that day. Answer no way. Wonder why the bellhop was so busy, We brought no bags. What a let down for such a nice reasonable place. Wireless very, very poor. Could not keep a connection in the room.

Review 10:Good location, Very nice room. for the cash

Review 11:A few pieces of the second floor lounge seemed a little loose and dangerous and one new staff at front desk charged our credit card multiple times. However senior staff fixed the problem and caused no issues.

Review 12:Rooms were small but emaculate and staff were great.

Review 13:I was disappointed that their was no parking options for patrons without paying and the lot I was in I had to pay for overnight and then go out at 9:30 the next morning to put more money in to cover our time there.

Review 14:I loved the people who worked there. Very friendly, welcoming and helpful. I also was enchanted with the "old world" feel of the place, with the large reading room and beautiful pieces of, what appeared to be, antique furniture throughout the hotel.

Review 15:The location seemed a little sketchy at first but was typical of Spokane. Also the wifi was a little slow.

Review 16:The atmosphere of the old hotel was wonderful. The second floor had a place to sit and read and drink coffee. The old furnishings added lots of character.

Review 17:The water in the shower never even became warm, let alone hot, which was a shame because the shower itself looked delightful.

Review 18:Loved the location, loved the coziness of the room. The building has charm.

Review 19:I got lost walking there from right down the street because sometimes I am dumb. It's actually really easy to find unless you are challenged at basic life skills like looking at the giant sign that is outside. This place is great I have no complaints.

Review 20:This place has a great ambience I wish I could have stayed longer!

Review 21:The floors creak a lot so you hear everything everybody is doing around you and the train runs all night long and wake you up every hour that would be nice to have at least a continental breakfast available or the restaurant downstairs actually have breakfast available

Review 22:Front desk girl is great very friendly the ambiance is very nice and location is a good spot for walking around Spokane downtown

Review 23:Public hallway carpet could stand a deep cleaning or replacement

Review 24:This is a lovely, social grand dame just a bit over the hill with genuine charm! We loved the ambiance and the friendliness. Quite a surprise from the small lobby to the grand open floor plan! The staff was warm and welcoming. The rooms were generously sized with nice high ceilings. The open social areas and comfortable couches were a real plus. This is a lovely, social hotel without pretense.

Review 25:Tiny rooms, tiny tv, the room and its furniture are all dated (not antique) and look cheap. The "view" from our room overlooked dumpsters in an alley. I don't know what room they used for the photos-but it wasn't the one I had to stay in.

Review 26:Our room was noisy due to location next to train and trash removal late at night.

Review 27:The price is very fair and centrally located in the city, a walk to most favorite spots. Always a friendly staff.

Review 28:The walls in our room were paper thin. I could hear the guy next door snoring when we went to bed. In the morning I could hear both him and the person he was on the phone with through the wall.

Review 29:The hotel is a classic and well appointed facility that is very clean and well kept.

Review 30:A little loud by the street, windows need to be more sound proof and could hear people walking in the room above.

Review 31:Convenience and beautiful historic building.

Review 32:We were told to park in the parking lot across from the hotel which was $14. We checked out before 8AM and found a $30 parking ticket on the car because the pass we purchased at 8:52 the evening before had expired at midnight.

Review 33:It was historic.

Review 34:mouldy bath curtain and pink and grey mold on lower tiles in shower; dents and paint scrapes in walls

Review 35:location, antique style of hotel, having an elevator, price

Review 36:Pretty noisy, you can hear the people walking around in the room above. The bathroom sink was cracked, but not unusable.

Review 37:Super comfy bed, adorable hotel with beautiful high ceilings, and great location.

Review 38:It had a feeling of a bit ragged around in the edges in the public spaces

Review 39:Value was good, bed was nice, and the location was what I expected. The nearby train tracks brought back memories of my grandmother's house

Review 40:Carpets worn, and bathroom vanity mirror was too high. I am 5'1 and I had to stand on tip toes to use it.

Review 41:Old world, historic charm. Hotel decor and design ( antiques) were terrific.

Review 42:I enjoyed the room and hotel. My only issue was with wifi in her room. It could be the signal strenght or brick walls. It worked well in the common areas.

Review 43:Nice old place nicely renovated with great bathroom. Restaurants beer by as well as the Stesm Plant.

Review 44:Slow wifi, windows were a little thin so conversations on the sidewalk were easily heard.

Review 45:Polite staff, adorable room, extremely comfortable bed, hot showers in the morning, ideal location.

Review 46:Parking. Creaky floors. Noisy neighbors in early am. No snack or drink machines.

Review 47:Friendliness/helpfulness of staff. 2nd floor atrium. Located close to downtown.

Review 48:Parking was an issue but just come armed with quarters for meters.

Review 49:Loved how everything was in walking distance easy to find and beds were super comfy!

Review 50:I could not recommend this hotel to friends, because of the general neglect of the common areas. The carpets were old and dusty, furniture not polished.

Review 51:The young women at the front desk were very pleasant; however, I could not recommend this hotel to friends, because of the general neglect of the common areas.

Review 52:No fridge except Pres Suite. Too noisy outside and in need ear plugs. customers above us banged around until 3am. Carpet is terrible.

Review 53:Presidential Suite was great. Location is great.

Review 54:If you are situated in the back of the hotel it can be a bit noisy due to a train track nearby.

Review 55:A beautiful historic hotel in the heart of Spokane. The building had true charm and character.

Review 56:The wifi was free but so slow that no Internet pages could load on my devices. There was also a lot of road noise, which didnt bother me as I'm a heavy sleeper, but other guests may want to bring earplugs. The price, location, and cozy decor more than made up for these small inconveniences.

Review 57:I loved the cozy, homey decor and warm colors. This hotel felt more like staying at a friend's house than a strange, sterile hotel. The staff were also incredibly friendly and helpful; in fact, the desk clerk went out of his way to borrow a wine opener from a nearby bar when my sister and I realized we'd forgotten one.

Review 58:Wifi was horrible and you had to constantly pay for parking. Street meters are free however from 7pm to 8 am.

Review 59:Everyone who I saw walk off of the elevator onto the second floor all said "Wow". This hotel really has a lovely charm about it. Even though there is no in room coffe, they have 4 airpots of coffee available 24/7. I stayed on the backside of the hotel (closest to the trains) and frankly, had to pay attention to hear them. They really are not as horrible as other reviews sound. Rooms are clean (carpet could use a good cleaning) but overall , good experience.

Review 60:Extremely noisy ..close to streets w traffic and the guests were extremely noisy and I had to wear headphones to bed. Only had an ice machine and coffee/tea nothing else.

Review 61:Close to down town ...cool historic building w antiques fun to look at..

Review 62:1.) No parking! Your choices were street parking (with meters), or two lots across the street that charged $14 or $20 per night. 2.) Upon arrival (despite specifying a 1AM arrival time), we had to add an additional night. Initially, the clerk refused to match the quoted rate. Thankfully, the daytime clerk was more helpful, refunded the original charge, and matched the quoted rate. 3.) Limited amenities in the room - no refrigerator, no microwave, no coffee pot - something I've come to expect with rooms in this price range.

Review 63:Hotel was beautifully restored

Review 64:The building is very old, so naturally there are some quirks, namely a leak in the main sitting room when it rained. Nothing that detracted from our stay though!

Review 65:This hotel has a fantastic ambiance. Authentic antiques are scattered about, with a beautiful sitting room on the second floor. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. The location is great for arts and entertainment fans.

Review 66:The lighting in the room was a little on the dark side. There were 4 beautiful lamps, but they didn't give of much light. Made reading difficult .

Review 67:Very clean! Beautifully decorated. And very peaceful. I will recommend this place.

Review 68:No movie channels /

Review 69:The decor is beautiful if you enjoy a vintage, antique look (which is why I chose it) the sitting area was especially beautiful. However, street noise through window and the voices shd movement in rooms around us was very noticeable.

Review 70:We were attending a concert across the street at the Fox, so this location couldn't have been better! The room was much more spacious than we expected, and quite comfortable. Loved the history and feel of this laid back classic.

Review 71:It's literally just a room, no coffee maker, no tv stand or entertainment center (cable box was hanging off wall, propped on tv). The walls are paper thin! Heard people using the restroom & my FAMILY heard the couple next door "enjoying" themselves one morning. You also have to pay for parking daily.

Review 72:The hotel was relatively clean just a little old & in need of minor touch ups/updates to make it look great.

Review 73:We had to park in a paid lot across the street; parking in the street was free 7pm to 8am, but I had to set my alarm to put money in the meter so I don't get a ticket. A bit noisy with the street noise and a train that is a couple blocks away

Review 74:Beautiful architecture and furniture in lobby, clean room, comfortable bed, friendly staff

Review 75:The free Wi-Fi only seems to work in the lobby and in the 2nd floorpubic "living area." I was on the 3rd floor and could notconnect in my room. Next time, I will request a room on the 2nd floor. This was not a big deal and definitely not enough to keep me fromcoming back.

Review 76:I read other reviews that talked about poor customer service, but thatsimply was not my experience. All staff I encountered were extremelyfriendly and helpful. Shortly after arrival, I realized my tv remote wasnot working. A quick call to the desk and she arrived minutes later witha new remote. The room was very clean and you cannot beat the locationif you are planning to eat, drink, and have fun downtown. Also - eat atScratch, next door!

Review 77:Room drafty at night. Not very warm. Limited amenity's. Cleanliness marginal ( found a toenail clipping that remained on carpet my whole stay) it was not mine.

Review 78:location, wonderful old historic building, super tall ceilings, big bathroom, everything worked, great decor in common areas, wifi that worked, super friendly staff.

Review 79:They'd run out of the French Vanilla creamer so I had to do half and half with sugar ;)

Review 80:Staff is friendly, rooms are clean, and the price is right.

Review 81:The room is cramped and no where to put anything in the bathroom, street noise and trains noise was constant, but my biggest complaint was the absolutely awful parking. Street parking only in an area that has 2 main venues for entertainment doesn't leave much for your clients. Sheets didn't fit the bed so I dealt with them curling up all night.

Review 82:The overall hotel is quaint and clean. The staff was friendly, but didn't know the area very well. The room was clean.

Review 83:The only issue was the wifi did not work in the room. I was on a business trip and really needed wifi in my room like it was advertised.

Review 84:The location and the character of the hotel was amazing. The people were helpful and friendly.

Review 85:- Free Wifi is a joke, super slow and drops all the time. Practically unusable. - TV set is old - No coffee machine in the room. There are coffee dispensers in the lobby but one in the room is a must these days. No fridge either. - Street noise is significant, and the building is squeaking loudly when someone is simply walking above your room.

Review 86:The building is stylish, and the location is great, just a few blocks from the mall and the riverside park.

Review 87:A little noisy with the railroad being close by and that you didn't get a parking pass and had to pay for parking something like $15.

Review 88:The hotel was located in the downtown area and it made it easy to walk to restuarants and bars. Rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable.

Review 89:The room I was in could use a fresh painting look like they had done some patch work on the walls and used different paint colors

Review 90:I liked the quite vintage surrounding in the biulding. Has a amazing historic feel with modern amenities.

Review 91:Keeping a parking spot paid for during our visit was a bit difficult, it would be nice if the hotel had their own spots.

Review 92:The hotel room and lounge area were beautifully decorated. It was a warm and comfortable environment.

Review 93:My only complaint is that the wifi signal wouldn’t work from our room.

Review 94:Our stay at the Montvale was delightful. The room was spacious and clean, staff very friendly and helpful. When we checked in, they discussed with us the differences of the available rooms such as the south facing rooms have some noise from the railroad that runs behind the hotel or the north facing rooms have the Fox Theater sign shining all night. We selected a second floor room facing the street and it was wonderful. Our bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed having tea or coffee (24hrs a day) in the atrium. The location was also a delight, walking distance to shopping (Nordstrom’s & Macy’s etc.), restaurants and theaters. We had no problems with parking on the street though a paid lot was offered. We have children in Spokane and plan to return staying at the Montvale. It was just a delight.

Review 95:My only slight complaint was that we had a street facing room and there was quite a bit of street noise. Despite this I slept great though!

Review 96:This hotel was such a hidden gem surprise! It is like taking a step back into old-world luxury. The room was gorgeous and spacious enough for our needs without being overly so. The bed was quite comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful. This is the first hotel I've ever stayed at where I wanted to sit in the 'courtyard' style lobby because it was so comfortable. The lobby is actually on the second floor and away from street windows. The coffee/tea service was great! Good coffee and premium tea. Overall it was an amazing stay and will be our regular hotel any time we're in town.

Review 97:The trains, but to be expected in any downtown hotel.

Review 98:Best if both worlds. Old world charm, high ceiling, character combined with modern bathrooms. Perfect

Review 99:Our room was so noisy! We must've been in the worst room--we were up all nite listening to the traffic, cop sirens, the train, & people yelling from the streets all night! Maybe the windows are only single pane? Yikes! Carpets throughout hotel were dirty.

Review 100:We liked the quaintness of the hotel....but it really needs to have a breakfast restaurant nearby...the lobby needs to be cozier. Loved the coffee/tea bar and the sitting areas.

Review 101:Wifi connection wasn't too great but was not a concern for me. It's right by the train tracks but it really wasn't very loud. The walls are pretty thin so we could hear someone running a bath which was slightly obnoxious.

Review 102:Super cute hotel! Reminds me of an older setting which I love. They offer coffee & tea in the adorable lobby which was an added bonus for me.

Review 103:unclean. walls as thin a toilet paper....i could hear next door conversations, spitting, coughing, laughing, toilet time. trains a stone throw away. loud & noisy. horrible old building.

Review 104:only the staff

Review 105:no secure parking, had to leave car on street in a not too good area Staff had no change for parking meter, kept me waiting while they were on an obvious personal call. The hotel already looks worn, especially the carpets. I rarely write reviews, but it may help you, or your guests. Jim & Ann

Review 106:The web site initially, but turned out to be misleading. Furniture.

Review 107:The hotel chooses to have a 48 hour cancellation policy (twice that ofany other sensible hotel) and after being on the phone with the companyI made the reservation with, I was informed I would have to call thehotel and cancel the reservation myself. Upon doing this, I was informedby a very rude woman at the front desk that I was calling with 47 hoursremaining and that I would have to pay for the first day even though Iwould be unable to make it there at all. She refused to let me speakwith a manager and I contested the charge. Poor service for sure. Dontknow about the property...and you can bet I never will now

Review 108:Nothing

Review 109:squeaky floors above us kept us awake. bed comfy but needed to be firmer.

Review 110:loved the high ceilings, Victorian décor and large bathroom. perfect location for touring around downtown Spokane

Review 111:The hotel was located near bars, theaters and a train track. The walls were thin and the fans who were staying there to attend a nearby concert were feeling frisky at 2 a.m. I was never able to connect to Wi-Fi in the room and the staff never answered the phone at the front desk.

Review 112:The hotel was located near bars and theaters and the building was beautifully restored. BUT ...

Review 113:Wish we could have gotten the same deal for a second night

Review 114:The old and elegant atmosphere The accommodating staff The comfortable bed The spacious room The great deal

Review 115:Dirty carpet throughout hotel, inadequate room cleaning

Review 116:Excellent location downtown, quaint boutique hotel, lots of character and charm. friendly staff

Review 117:The hotel common areas were drab & shabby. Bed was uncomfortable & poorly furnished. Street noise was very loud. The room ventilation was noisy and blew in your face.

Review 118:The staff was pleasant.

Review 119:I can see where other people have made comments about noise and cleanliness. It is downtown on a busy intersection and in an old building. The base boards haven't been scrubbed in awhile but I don't expect perfection for a rate that's under $100/night. The equivalent in price is a lot grosser in my opinion. My only gripe (if I have one even), is the size of the tv. It's about the size of a computer monitor mounted on the wall. We don't watch much tv and were looking forward to the luxury of lounging in bed and watching a movie. Accomplished, but small viewing.

Review 120:Cool funky hotel with character. Beds were awesome and I had a great night's sleep. I was really happy with this place after the reviews I read which had got me nervous. For the price and the mattress, I will stay here again if I come back to Spokane. Coffee and Tea were a plus in my book too.

Review 121:I was put off by the parking situation at the hotel. There is no official Montvale parking! I didn't feel comfortable leaving my car on the street bc I was traveling with a bunch of stuff, so my only option was to park 3 blocks away in an overpriced garage. I feel the hotel should offer a partial voucher for garage parking since they do little to offer secure parking. Also, the TV in my room did not work, which was fine with me bc I didn't really need it. It would have been nice to watch the news in the morning but I got over it.

Review 122:I spent a night at this cool, historic hotel while traveling through Spokane on a cross country trip. The hotel and the accommodations were perfect for what my needs... the bed was comfortable, the room/bathroom was impeccably clean, and it was in close proximity to lots of restaurants and cool stuff in the downtown area.

Review 123:It was odd to find parking. We parked in a pay for parking lot across the street but later found out we should not have parked there. There is a train that runs just about 100 yards to the south of the hotel, but it wasn't loud enough to keep us up. We are early risers and were up at 6-7 am and no continental breakfast was offered at that time.

Review 124:The character of the hotel was beautiful! The location was excellent for us as we were attending a concert just across the street. There was complimentary coffee in second floor. Bed was comfortable, and even though we didn't have a chance to use it, there was a jetted, deep tub in the bathroom! It was a very clean, comfortable room/hotel with lots of old character

Review 125:There is a train track a block away and a train goes by every hour throughout the night so it wakes you up each time. It is downtown near the bars so there was tons of college students yelling all night outside and also no parking besides paying 12 dollars to park in a back alley close to where all the homeless hang out. We asked to change rooms and they let us but it was still just as loud.

Review 126:Poor lighting in room. A few small lamps, that were not adequate. Towels could be better laundered. They didn't seem "fresh". There were no handholds to assist getting in/out of the tub/shower. The train runs nearby and frequently throughout night.

Review 127:Location was convenient. Had nice ambiance. Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 128:Generally, our biggest problem with the Montavale Hotel was the overall cleanliness. All the carpet and in the public spaces were unreasonably stained throughout. Seems like a vacuum cleaner hasn't touch anywhere throughout the hotel in weeks. The first hotel room we were given; there was a horrible musty smell. I have a chronic respiratory condition so I requested them to reclean the room and sanitize the air(kind of what do they do with a room that has been smoked in). The single hotel clerk stated that housekeeping has since left at 3pm for the day and that they are completely sold out and she cannot do anything. We told her that will not do and that she needs to try. She magically found the room next to us was free and that the only thing she could do was move us to that room. We checked the room and it smelled better than the previous room. However, inside the room, again the carpet was ridiculously stained and in a deplorable condition. There was exposed on the tv cable box. If we hadn't previously made the reservation we would not have stayed. I wouldn't give

Review 129:The price would be the only thing we liked and we found out that it was cheaper the same day as opposed to the 2 months we booked in advance.

Review 130:All in all there is really nothing I didn't dislike !

Review 131:I loved the friendly staff, awesome location in the heart of downtown spokane. It was neat having such history as being est. in 1899, however it is close to the train tracks and traffic, but all in all a nice place to stay, especially for the $ !

Review 132:Can I get a refund? This is an absolutely dreadful, filthy hotel. Thecarpets throughout the the lobby, common areas and hotel room werefilthy. The room was dark and had minimal lighting and front deskrelations had no bulbs for the burnt out one's left in the sockets. The "promised" amenities of this so called four star hotel didnot even function. The signal weak Comcast internet doesn't hardlywork at all. (The drone front receptionist woman just said: "Oh, ifwe're over 40% full, it doesn't really work." "Thenext day when I asked about filling out customer feedback, she said"You can just do that online. We're Bank owned now, so thereisn't really a Manager or anything you can do" There were noRobes in the room as promised, and the room was noisy and very poorlyinsulated from main street traffic type noise. Worse than that, therewere people who brought dogs in the rooms, which explains the nasty, dank stench of the hotel room and common areas. The restaurant that wasthere was called Catacombs and is boarded up closed with masses of oldnewspapers and flyers thrown at the old entrance door collecting dirt. The cheap little 12" flat panel tv was mounted on a massive walland could not be watched effectively due to it's inappropriatepositioning. Montvale was far worse than most Holiday Inn Express hotelsthat I have stayed in. Please read the other reviews that detail theactual experience, many which seem to mirror my experience. It's ashame that such a cool landmark property is in such a state of detritus.Customer Service is a zero at best. Never again Montvale, it's noteven worth $29.99 a night.

Review 133:It was a landmark building

Review 134:Across the parking lot from the back of the hotel is a railroad trestle and I was kept awake much of the night by engine noise. Paint damage in the room and water damage in the bathroom. No free parking for guests. Didn't know that until I got to the hotel.

Review 135:The staff service was excellent and the hotel is beautiful. Love the historic feel!

Review 136:There was no Wi-Fi as advertised, and the staff was embarrassed and yet unaccommodating when asked about it.

Review 137:The room was pleasant and clean and comfortable

Review 138:The place smelled -- the brown carpet is hiding a lot of dirt. The nearby train runs all night making it difficult to sleep. The downtown area is run down with homeless people living nearby.

Review 139:leaving

Review 140:For the price, it should offer at least a continental breakfast.

Review 141:Right in the middle of downtown and the desk clerks were very helpful. I like how bight and comfortable the second floor seating area was.

Review 142:Needed ear plugs Old building means we can hear conversations through the walls, and our upstairs neighbors who began walking around at 4:45 am.

Review 143:Historical and full of culture Unique and beautiful furnishings Nice bathroom, spacious with great shower Clean Air Conditioning made it very comfortable Great location

Review 144:I was billed twice because of complications using a debit visa! Now I have to wait 5 business days to get my refund! I wasn't informed about the $30 incidental charge until the second day when it was taken out of my account!

Review 145:Nice room, hotel has tons of character. Friendly helpful staff. Location is great for walking to nearby amenities and attractions!
