Reviews for Jack London Inn

Review 1:Poor customer service, Phone in room not working (from another hotel, see pics), Very Loud Train that comes by every few hours, Soda Machines do not work, Online (Booking.com) says its a smoking hotel and when we get there they tell us its non-smoking. (As of today, 1/13/16, They still give you an option through booking.com for smoking!!) They said we can cancel if we wanted, but there are no other available rooms in the area at a decent price due to a large convention in town. So we are forced to stay in this horrible inn with no other choice. Every UBER and Taxi Driver we came in contact with throughout the weekend at Oakland said this place (Jack London Inn) was very dangerous, known for prostitution, etc. Lastly the excuse given by Erica (Front Desk) upon checkout on Sunday, 1/10/16, regarding the condition of the Inn was because it was under renovations. On Booking.com it was not stated to be under renovations (because who wants to go to a hotel that is currently being renovated?), nor did it say anywhere on site. No signs on the outside or inside that said "Hey we are renovating!". I mean they didn't even have the required renovation permits displayed to the public from the City of Oakland. This is my guess at all of this. You see these wonderful reviews online about this place, you decide to book it because its the right price range. You are a smoker. You go there and realize its a very sketchy area, and go to check-in to your room. Then you see signs everywhere that say "No smoking hotel/inn, if you are found to have smoked in your room they will be a $60 dollar cleaning fee." You say but online it says you are smoking, and they say well we are not. Then you cant sleep at night because of the roaring train. When you get thirsty the soda machines don't work. When you go to call for their assistance the phone in your room is not connected and from another hotel all together "La Quinta" or something.

Review 2:None.

Review 3:It was a good location and the check in was smooth. We asked for more towels and were just told no. Plus the parking was scary so one of us slept in the van. We are punk rockers so we make it work, but the hotel didn't care or make it easier. So it's a good place to sleep but if you want the staff help, good luck!

Review 4:The building looks like it is under constant construction. Trim pieces are missing, walls are half painted and light fixtures are dangling from wires. We arrived in the middle of the night and the hotel signage was not lighted. It was hard to find in the dark. I was disappointed in the continental breakfast. It was an urn of coffee, some mini muffins, dry croissants and some orange drink that looked like watered down Tang.

Review 5:That there was a room available on Raider football weekend and that room was clean for my daughter and I.

Review 6:The breakfast ran out so fast we barely got anything to eat :( Add more menu and more portion, maybe? ;)

Review 7:I love my stay there. The staff are very nice, too, which is very important! :)

Review 8:There is a very bizarre sense of aesthetics at work here. The pictures on the hallway walls are good, but they're all copies of the same thing. The hallway is very long. I kept thinking I'd see the twins from "The Shining" asking me to play with them for ever and ever. Room colors very dark and dreary. Heat not adequate. Rug in front of laundry room taped down with bright blue tape. 2nd floor scary-looking: under construction. No fridge, no microwave.

Review 9:All staff friendly and nice. Beautiful area! Great for a stroll, especially Sunday farmers' market.

Review 10:I was told breakfast smack was available 6 to 8 am, i was there 7:10 am ...only thing there was cold coffee and bread. There was no air cond.,so we had to open the window with a trash dump under it,very early the next,we were awaken with the smell, noise of them cleaning up the trash

Review 11:There were difficulties with getting the lights to work and it took multiple efforts to get the door to lock when we left the room. The hallway carpet was dirty, and the entire hallway looked most uninviting with people "camped out" sitting on the floor a little further down the hall. Much further away from BART than the on-line advertisement indicated.

Review 12:The girl on the desk was fantastic. Very welcoming and helpful. The beds were comfortable.

Review 13:The night clerk did not explain that there was NO AIR CONDITIONING, and the windows don't open. There was no refrigerator in the cabinet, the TV channels are limited, and the facility is still being remodeled. The day clerk was accommodating, but for the condition of the facility in the heat, it should not be $95!

Review 14:The location is great.

Review 15:the hotel is rundown but decent. there are some things that could easily get fixed but they did not. they are renovating though so i dont mind returning.

Review 16:the location is very close to the ferry going to san francisco. just right in front of jack london square

Review 17:Heard the saying flea bag hotel? They were referring to this property. There was nothing good about this site. Well, I tripped and the person at the desk spoke, for the first time. Cable - 5 channels; thread count for sheets - 1; roach spotted; blanket - holes & paper thin; mold in shower; towels were hand towel not bath towels and thin; smelly' WiFi - none.... you get the idea

Review 18:Location. Price, but

Review 19:The room numbers were masking taped to the doors, there was paint chipping off every door, their AC was out and they had no more rooms available with opening windows. We woke up drenched in sweat due to the heat.

Review 20:We stayed here because it was 5 blocks from an event we were going to.

Review 21:there was no AC, the windows didn't open so no way to get fresh air. no one told me before I booked it that there was no AC. and yes we got a discount of $5 off per night. when we asked for a fan they gave us a really small fan.

Review 22:the location of the hotel it's good

Review 23:There were cockroaches,we get there and there's no air. They said the air hadn't been working for a while. Rooms were stuffy. Staff couldn't even provide a fan. The price for the hotel could have been a lot cheaper.

Review 24:It was close to resuarantes and bars

Review 25:They were renovating and didnt inform us. The AC was busted, so they gave us a box fan, we had to sleep with the windows open, with a train outside the window. The bed was lumpy, and the top right corner was lower than the rest of the bed. No mini fridge, no microwave, no shelf or inlet to set anything in the shower. No water pressure for a shower.

Review 26:The lady at the desk was nice

Review 27:No mini fridge or microwave, undergoing renovations in the hallways, outside could use a little renovation.

Review 28:The room was clean, housekeeping was attentive, in a quiet area.

Review 29:I loved how the staff were so nice, they genuinely wanted you to enjoy your time here. Even tho they are in the process of renovating the property they were still extremely clean and neat.

Review 30:Sheets were dirty, the AC was broke. No microwave, no fridge, no iron in our room. No screens on the windows on the 4th floor. Basic cable, like 15 channels. Put us in the room right next to their washing machine room, room 417, which was loud & made the ground shake. Wi-fi didn't work.

Review 31:Right across from Jack London Square, close to good restaurants & breweries. Decent size rooms. Closest to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. Free Parking partially in garage.

Review 32:Air conditioning broken during a "heat wave". No discount offered. They did switch our room to one with windows that opened. Unfortunately, the train comes by at least every hour...which means sleep was not easy to come by!

Review 33:Great location

Review 34:Right NEXT to the train, NO A/C, Mattress was wore OUT! Phone had wiring short, it made loud noises all night & our bed was up on 4x6 wooden blocks!

Review 35:It was close to Jack London square

Review 36:Air conditioning was not working We were not notified prior to check in so we had no time to find other accommodations our first night in town. The room had no toulet paper, no hand towels and. no trash can. We had to ask for a fan and the staff had no idea when the a/c would be fixed. No manager was on duty and the staff did not know when he would show up.

Review 37:Nothing

Review 38:the website said air conditioning, the air conditioning didn't work and we were told it was being fixed, which does not appear to be true, you couldn't open the windows to let air in, we checked out after one night

Review 39:Location

Review 40:Wifi is awful tv picture was snowy on every channel coffee pot in room, awful coffee in lobby also This is not the place you stay when you want to relax in the hotel room

Review 41:I stayed at this hotel despite the horrible reviews. I knew exactly what I was getting into I took my chances because it was half the price of the other hotels in the area, Its close to Jack London Square for ferry access Across the street from the Jack London Square sign! no bedbugs pretty clean room the bathroom was completely brand new which made the stay not so bad

Review 42:no air conditioning, under construction, no phone in room, bad wifi, tv fuzzy, no fridge, hotel was missing usual amenities due to remodeling and not clean

Review 43:location convenient to transportation

Review 44:We stayed 2 nights on 19th, 20th of Aug and after checking in, we justrealized that the ac was not working at all. We asked front desk and shetold us the ac of the entire hotel was shut down. At least 30% roomswere not occupied because they were doing renovate. In the next morningat around 7 or 8am, I always heard someone knocked my door outside thatis the reason I did not feel safe to stay here.

Review 45:The air conditioner was broken the 6 days I was there and still charged full rate. Felt like I should have received a little compensation for the stay

Review 46:Hotel did not have our reservation. We had upgraded to a King size bed. We got checked in into a double bed room. With no a/c. Room had no towels, phone did not work neither did the TV.

Review 47:Only good thing about this place was the bed and pillows.

Review 48:The lack of air conditioning in the entire building was not the greatest, even when I received the small fan as compensation. The train whistle throughout the day and night made the complimentary ear plugs make sense.

Review 49:That the air was vaguely breathable. The room I stayed in was renovated, so it had nice hardwood floors and a tube TV. The view of the dumpster with the homeless man setting up a makeshift room next to it made me realize I didn't have it so bad (I wonder what rate he paid).

Review 50:Tiny, rough bath towels. No air conditioning and the windows didn't open so the room was always stuffy and hot. Hair dryer didn't work. T.V. was fuzzy and didn't work well. We told staff but nothing was done about it. They advertise that they have a pool but it was empty and not in use. There was somebody's worn underwear left behind in one of the cupboards.

Review 51:Great location - right near the ferry, free shuttle bus right outside, lots of bars/restaurants/amenities just a short walk away. Considerably cheaper than other hotels in the area. Having a bath tub as well as a shower was nice. We got a free upgrade to a suite as we requested a king bed and there were none available. Coffee and pastries were provided Monday - Friday. Though they were not good quality, it was nice to get my caffeine fix sorted without having to leave the hotel.

Review 52:In a state of complete disarray. They were remodeling and the room was not completely done. Elevator lights were out and I was not going to ride 4 floors in complete darkness. I told the front desk and the response was "yea I know." I would think you would say "sorry, we've got someone on it." When we booked we weren't told there was no air conditioning or that the train ran right in front.

Review 53:Close to embarcadero and ferry to San Francisco

Review 54:No air conditioning,no alarm clock in room, morning staff were rude and unhelpful, bed was hard as a rock, breakfast was a joke, toilet got clogged maintenance never came to fix it couldn't get plunger to un clog it.front desk had no change for five$ Bill for vending machine....Not a pleasant stay, use to stay at this hotel few years back want nowhere near as bad as it is now really give down hill with new owners.

Review 55:The location was good for the weekend night life .

Review 56:Not a 4 star place but ok. Sometimes there was no parking at night and noisy because of local music places. No real air conditioning. If they would renovate this place it could be great.

Review 57:The location for the price is great. Free parking pretty good. Staff was nice to me. Erica helped a lot, as did others.

Review 58:Hotel is very poor maintenance, not enough parking spots, AC, smoke detectors are not working properly, Old TV, dirty

Review 59:Location is very convinient, a lot of restaurants and bars, walking distance to see ocean

Review 60:The towels were dirty and had lipstick on them. The sheets were dirty. The bathroom had a cocoroach in it. No fridge. Website said there would be a pool but there was no pool.

Review 61:Staff was good.

Review 62:the parking was difficult. There was no iron or coffee pot available in my room for 5 day stay,so I looked wrinkled for the meetings I attended. No wifi working. No water in the pool. There was a wedding reception going on one of the evenings. These individuals took up a lot of the already small parking area and those guests were rude.

Review 63:I liked the price. it was in my range. I liked Jack London Square across the street and the two eateries at ground level House of Chicken and Waffles and Everett Jones house of BBQ. They were both in walking distance. There was someone on duty to watch the cars.

Review 64:No air condition to hot in the room, they give us a smal tiny fan so wecan use. Still hot and warm in the room the offer us to check out.theycan refund the money. We trieu for 2 night

Review 65:neighborhood is really run down with strip joints and dive bars within a block. No air conditioning so had to leave windows open and could hear the fighting in the neighborhood. Wifi did not work even with the password. T.V. Is old and cable service poor. No clear picture. Only snow.

Review 66:The building was in horrible condition. The rooms smelled weird and the accommodations were abysmal.

Review 67:The only thing there was to like about this hotel was it's location. It was centrally located in the heart of Jack London Square next to a Chicken and Waffles spot (that stayed open till 4am) and a bowling alley.

Review 68:AC didn't work and the room was stuffy. The hotel was pretty run down and the room didn't have a fridge or a microwave. The breakfast (coffee and muffins) was over by the time we got there.

Review 69:Dont saty here!!!! No Ac from november, the building under costraction so are all the flors and the room and they are still selling it. Dont stay there!!!

Review 70:No A/C. Windows did not open. One elevator working that smelled like freshly sprayed RAID. No mirror in room. No hand towels, wash cloths and two towels too small for toddlers.

Review 71:The air conditioning didn't work. It was really dirty and holes and garbage everywhere. The rooms were half renovated paint splatter and missing parts in the door and walls.

Review 72:the manager understood of how hot the rooms were with no working a/c and worked with us.

Review 73:There was no a/c because of renevations but I wasn't informed of any of this until after I paid.

Review 74:The bed was comfortable, and they gave me a full refund

Review 75:Dirty, dark, smelly and advertised inclusive breakfast was non existent. Reasonably cheap by San Fran standards but not a great experience

Review 76:My recent stay at the Jack London Inn was a JOKE. The hotel was a complete mess and smelled of sewage, the room was not ready, missing bedsheets, the beds put up on wooden blocks that made the bed sink when you laid on it. Not for lack of trying but I would not have stayed there but after trying four different hotels that night with no luck I had to suck it up. The AC was broken even though it was advertised. It is beyond me how this has a 3 star rating. I was extremely unhappy with my stay here.

Review 77:The staff was friendly and there was free parking.

Review 78:Nothing at all. Better living condition on the streets of Oakland. Moved into a hotel while they are remodeling the room. 4 foot window pane on window sill and not attached to anything. Injury that would cause a person is not imaginable.

Review 79:dried up toilet urine was a pleasure to clean up

Review 80:Everything: The hotel at all times had an overwhelming smell of marijuana, it was disgusting, there were bed bugs, we could open the door with our finger, without the door key! The loudest train you've ever heard passes by every 5 minutes! Cars were being stolen 2 nights in a row from the parking lot, the parking lot is used for parking for bars and businesses around the hotel also, I saw mice, they store the mattresses and spare furniture outside in the parking garage. They tell you its under construction, but the locals tell you that's the best condition the hotels ever been in! Horror, just horror, oh and the hotel is used to house the homeless families in Oakland by the social services.

Review 81:They returned my prescription glasses when I left thin in the first room we got moved out of

Review 82:The door can't Lock. At the room I was in..I had to change room to one higher. Floor cuz of the man next door.n I was. Promise a rate.n Howard. Was nice to change room but they charge extra. Mess me up. On my bank account. N then they charge me 25.00 extra for what. Lies..never again. I will come. To Oakland California hotels or motels..mostly Jack London Inn. The pictures. In the brochure. Of this hotel are. Lies. N these employees are. Lies n favortizm. I see..the male. Employee. Howard. Thought he was nice.. Not.

Review 83:The bed n n room was a little ok. During the day. Nice cleaning staff... Bed comfy Warm bath Nice big beautiful towels.. Tv... naw. .. Other wise ok...

Review 84:Great location but horrible property up keep. Bed bugs. I tried checking out immediately but there were no other facilities with availability. I had the worst 12 hour experience. I checked out the following early morning hours. I didn't feel safe.

Review 85:Unless it's life or death don't stay here. You'd be better off and safer staying in your car. Rabbid dogs and homeless people staying into broken in rooms.

Review 86:The bed was so clean! I'm sure you feel clean bed. It'll make you sleep well. I love this place !! I recomend you stay here on the weekend. There are famer's market every weekend

Review 87:A train is passing by every 10 minutes and blows its horn at least 10 times in front of the hotel. A guarantee you will not sleep well... Room wasn't cleaned after the first night. We had to ask 3 times and wait another day for clean towels. The guy at the desk really didn't want to help us when we asked him. There is no refrigerator, microwave, etc. Even though the room is clean, the rest of the motel is extremely dirty (halls, elevators, parking garage etc) There is WIFI, but we always had issues connecting to it. We only managed to connect one out of 4 times. P.S. On the >20 motels I booked via booking.com, this is the first negative review I give. I am not very picky, but this experience just didn't add any value for the money.

Review 88:Room cleanliness is OK. Free parking Takes 15 minutes to walk to the BART station, the subway will bring you to the center of San Fransisco in 20 minutes.

Review 89:It took two hours & six different rooms to finally get one that a)didn't stink, b) they could provide a key that Worked! And after allthat, we still got a room with no cable, holes in the door that allowedoutsider to look right into our room, wet towels, & the list goes on& on!!

Review 90:Absolutely nothing!!

Review 91:The property was tired, dirty and without ac. The carpets and furniture were stained, paint chipped with debris strewn in hallways. I travelled rooextensively in my career and had opportunities to stay in a range of properties from outhouses to penthouses and this Inn didn't qualify as an outhoouthouse.

Review 92:We left the minute we saw the room, and were not given any kind of discount despite our pleading with the manager. He told us to bring it up with corporate. Horrible!!!

Review 93:Nothing at all

Review 94:Filthy surroundings; appears that no painting or maintenance on the building or in the rooms has been done for many years. No mattress pad, blankets did not fit bed.

Review 95:Other than very pleasant reception staff, we found nothing to be "likable" about the Jack London Inn.

Review 96:no bad experience just wish they would finish up construction, and allow you to check out later the next day preferably in the evening because that's more convenient for people leaving at night the next day.

Review 97:clean affordable within walking distance to everything across the street from the water

Review 98:Absolutely awful. Holes in doors, filthy, and smelly. The white shower pan was brown with stains and dirt. We left and found a different hotel. Their website video makes the hotel seem fine. It is absolutely NOT an accurate depiction.

Review 99:Location is walking distance from the train.

Review 100:Halls hadn't seen a vacuum in probably weeks, my door was almost off its hinges, toilet broke, internet didn't work, no heat or ac.

Review 101:Staff was apologetic.

Review 102:No heat. Cold air blowing out a vent in the bathroom. Old TV. Sketchy guests. Smoke smell in the non-smoking room. Shitty WiFi. Broken phone.

Review 103:I received a refund. I liked that

Review 104:Number one, the hallways stink. I walked in my room and it just felt dirty walking in it. All the table surfaces were greasy and had hand prints on them. The bed sheets had hair and grit (obviously the maid did not change them) and the walls have mold and blood or food splatter marks. The bed was sinking in. I changed rooms and the second was only slightly better.

Review 105:I love the location. Extremely convenient and easy to really get around downtown.

Review 106:My sliding door did not look. The heater was inoperable.

Review 107:The location is great.T.v. Great restaurant next door. Chicken and waffles. B it is dirty. Not on my list of hotels to return to.

Review 108:Every thing no cable, out dated tvs,out dated furniture, old beds, and most of all i couldn't get my money back so i had to stay over a night

Review 109:The Inn is in the process of being remodeled and the interior reflects that condition. Rooms on the 4th floor were stripped & mostly bare. We were given a room on that floor & had to relocate.

Review 110:The location was good. It was where we wanted to be.

Review 111:Ceiling has peeling paint , carpet extremily dirty. That I am afraid to walk on ! Bathroom filthy , and bad location there trains coming every hour very noisy ! And linens smell old , has not been changed ! I strongly not recommend this hotel ! This is Hostel !

Review 112:Nothing good !

Review 113:The Jack London Inn had horrible morning customer front desk service, horrible accommodations with the exception of a few rooms under construction and active prostitution in certain rooms. For the purpose of desperate transitioning with hardly any finances, this is a affordable place.

Review 114:The staff members of Jack London Inn, Yesenia and Rolondo are very friendly and attended to our every need

Review 115:The room is not represented well by pictures online, false advertising!! Holes in the walls, bathroom moldy, not clean, curtains moldy, couldn't stay here, received money back after checking in and leaving 10 min later.

Review 116:free parking

Review 117:It is a lodging facility with a lot of noisy and unruly residents -- it felt unclean and was under major construction

Review 118:The staff were kind and the location is awesome

Review 119:Next to train which was loud. Construction still going on. Only one towel available. No hangers in the closet. Police activity one evening

Review 120:Had one room just updated. Affordable

Review 121:no towls, creepy security, three cars got broken into that were parked in there garage, the pool was disgusting trash and seagulls in it, very unsanitary

Review 122:No fridge no microwave ... Shower is pretty pathetic. If u don't want to hear a really loud train go by every hour then u probly don't wanna stay here . having said that I would still stay here again gladly

Review 123:I loved the area we were in a very fun part of Oakland awesome entertainment and food all within 10 blocks. The bowling alley rite next door was awesome ... I would recommend this spot if ur ok with a sub par room in a great area. Personally I would prefer that over a great room in a bad area

Review 124:did not like the hotel room I tried two different rooms neither was clean needs to be remodeled and was smelly even in hallway left and went to another hotel cheaper and better

Review 125:staff was courteous

Review 126:Manager was notified by the staff member working about the facility's heaters weren't working and we weren't notified prior to booking the room. The Staff member also informed the assinstant manager that my credit card still wasn't billed so if we could cancel our reservation without being charged due to the fact their heaters were not working and didn't want to risk our children's health yet the manager said they had to charge for the room. We notified booking.com about the situation and I'm currently still trying to resolve this issue and get reimbursemed for staying at an alternate hotel.

Review 127:Old hotel, smell bad, right beside the train rail, too nosity, there was not heat in December, no trash can in room, no hair dryer, no soap or shampoo.

Review 128:This hotel was a dump....No heat and I did not feel safe at all, the worse I've stayed in. My room was on the 3rd floor, to much foot traffic from unscrupulous charactors hanging out and making drug deals in the hallways with little to no hotel staff to monitor. I never felt safe and acutally left this Hotel. NOT SAFE....

Review 129:Bed was uncomfortable. Place was falling apart. Found a bug in my pillow. Didn't sleep well at all. TV had 7 channels. Worst night sleep I've had in a log time.

Review 130:The staff was friendly and there was safe parking.
