Reviews for Avania Inn of Santa Barbara

Review 1:Breakfast left little to be desired. Expected more since the room was very basic- found hair in sink and tub- I had just checked in.

Review 2:Easy to find off freeway. Close to beach and short drive to state street

Review 3:Ice machine is located on 1st floor :/ Parking can be constrained; especially late night.

Review 4:Conveniently located to State Street restaurants and the beaches.

Review 5:Elevators smelled like the carpets had been urinated on and not cleaned. The cleaning staff yelled to each other in Spanish from one room to another disturbing people that where in their rooms and where very loud with clinks and clangs down the hallways outside your room. The elevator was locked when we had to leave for the airport at 5am so I had to carry three suitcases down three floors. Very annoying.

Review 6:It was clean and comfortable enough for the money.

Review 7:The place was nice. Its decorated very nicely. Looks just like the pics. I gave it a good only because its not not he beach. But we got a cab to the funk zone and it only cost 5$, so the location isn't bad at all. In fact, we walked back to the hotel, didn't need a cab. In the summer this would be a fine location so you don't have to pay beach prices. The bed was squeaky unfortunately. I didn't sleep well. The room was fine for the one night we stayed there. Breakfast was fine. Typical of fast hotel , make your own waffles, breakfast. The staff seemed very nice.

Review 8:The fridge was not very clean, the water pressure in the shower was very poor, the front desk customer service needs improvement from a call to a face-to-face interactions it was not enjoyable every time

Review 9:The location is right across the park, perfect for people traveling with small children, near the ocean, the bed was very comfortable as well, it was clean for the most part, breakfast was not too bad either

Review 10:This is an older property that needs some updating. Shower/stool area is extremely small.

Review 11:The location was good, just a short walk off the main street. Breakfast was good. Has an elevator.

Review 12:Worse check in experience of my life. The lady at the front desk who was most likely the owner was rude and had ZERO greeting skills. Basically treated you like dirt. Would NEVER stay there again. There are much better options right in the same area.

Review 13:Leaving was the best part.

Review 14:Room could use a facelift. Cable channels very limited and WiFi was almost useless. Price is on the high side, would expect better rooms and ameneties for almost $200 per night.

Review 15:Good location by the pier and marina. State St. shops and restaurants are a short walk away. Great staff. Breakfast was better than most hotels.

Review 16:1. More than 1 hr. In front desk just to check in, due to problems with their "new" system.2. The rooms we first got were occupied!! it was embarrassing to see naked people in one room and plenty of luggage in the other room! 3. Lady in front desk is very rude and hard to talk to. The hotel never apologize for the inconveniences, just explained the "problems" with their new reservations system... I will NEVER recommend this hotel. Never!! You think your things are safe in a hotel room, but they aren´t, the hotel give keys of your room to new guests without checking availability! It´s unacceptable!!

Review 17:Location

Review 18:The room was clean and well appointed. The bed was really comfortable. We had a pillow top king bed. The bathroom was clean. Everything about the room was nice. The location was great -- just a block from the beach. The breakfast was adequate, plenty of variety to choose from.

Review 19:The staff could have been nicer and the I believe the scrambled eggs were microwaved.

Review 20:I liked where the hotel was conveniently located near the ocean. Very clean rooms.

Review 21:The receptionist - who I think is also the owner/manager was SO unfriendly; and I work in travel, so I have dealt with my fair share. Its an in-and-out establishment. The lobby is so big and empty, the pool hours are 10am-10pm, when traveling with kids this is very late. The lobby and breakfast area WILL NOT open until 730am sharp; we stood outside waiting with another couple and a younger set of friends traveling for business...WHY? Bc they understaff - 1 person who was in charge of setting up breakfast and making the food and opening shop... we are from Santa Barbara originally though we live in LA and often do 'stay vacations' when visiting family and will NOT be going back here.

Review 22:location. Room was good size.

Review 23:Only disappointed with breakfast staff, not quick or helpful when room was full or empty to clear tables for eating. both mornings ate on dirty tables with a pile of dirty dishes.

Review 24:Room was great. Location was good. Easy and within walking distance to catch Free bus. Staff were friendly and helpful. Decent breakfast

Review 25:The Avania Inn is a short walk from the beach whilst being conviently located close to the 101. A well appointed room with balacony and a very comfortable bed, I would certainly stay again.

Review 26:nothing bad for us...

Review 27:my mom is pretty picky -- and she was pleased. great place for the price. breakfast is nice. our room had a little balcony. didn't try the pool. great location (use the shortcut by the train station to get to downtown.)

Review 28:It's an average motel for expensive Santa Barbara prices.

Review 29:The location is excellent - walking distance to the beach and restaurants, across the street from a baseball field, easy drive to the zoo.

Review 30:Upon check in our reservation was not on file from Booking.com. We were without a reservation for two of our three nights. It took some negotiation to get the rate we were told we'd have and add the two nights not booked.. Very inconvenient. What went wrong there, Booking.com?? The desk staff was curt and abrupt. Not customer friendly. The pool was very small and not as clean as it should have been. Came back one afternoon and our room still wasn't cleaned. We wouldn't stay there again while in Santa Barbara. This would have been luxurious for Barstow but not for Santa Barbara.

Review 31:The pillow top mattress was very comfortable which we liked. The breakfast was good but with only one staff person waiting on a morning crowd. there was a long line for the toaster--there should have been more than one toaster available.. The room was average and rate was high but we were in Santa Barbara where they know only one price--High!

Review 32:The location is fine, but there isn't anything close by for entertainment and food. It's a short walk to the beach. Smokers and not very friendly people hanging out all day in front of the gate to the very, very small pool made it not very family friendly.

Review 33:Delicious scones at breakfast, nicely decorated room and a comfortable bed

Review 34:thought it was expensive for what it offered, very mediocre breakfast. Very few places to eat within walking distance

Review 35:clean, with comfortable beds and nicely outfitted room

Review 36:AC unit was noisy, carpet raggedy where it met the tile, bathroom hook a the very top of the door, sink didn't drain well, former customer's food remained in the refrigerator. Breakfast room hot and uncomfortable. Signs say "park at your own risk" -- not too reassuring.

Review 37:Room was quiet and spacious, bed comfortable, shower good, refrigerator provided.

Review 38:noisy in to late night, strong odor, employees attitude especially at check in

Review 39:this was a very bad experience and definitely one to be avoided for the future

Review 40:Staff could be friendlier. Price was high, but probably due to the location. Some kids in the room above us junping and running - put young families on lower floor.

Review 41:Ample parking, clean facility, good breakfast. Old place, but they seem to try hard to keep it decent.

Review 42:Quite simply the hostel - like ambience. The decor, fittings and fixtures are "tired" and there was little evidence of adequate security. On several occasions we witnessed members of the public who do not benefit from their own catering or domestic facilities entering the hotel's environs presumably to access the ice machine which was positioned at the foot of an external stairwell at the rear of one of the car parking areas.

Review 43:The proximity of the hotel to the harbours and waterfront. Parking included in tariff.

Review 44:The bathroom smelled of bleach for an entire day - I guess that's better than a filthy room. Nothing else to complain about. The hotel is providing good value for the money compared to other Santa Barbara hotels.

Review 45:Decent, clean hotel in close proximity to the beach and Stearns wharf. Breakfast was included and quite good. Free parking. Attentive staff. Small pool to cool off.

Review 46:Bathroom is so small I could barely turn around in it. Front desk clerk ignored me when I tried to check out, all the while chatting up a male guest. Had to finally sit down in the lobby for 10 min. while she finished her visit. I received very brusque treatment when I checked in, too. Very large homeless population congregates in the park across the street, but none of them bothered us.

Review 47:Very close to the waterfront, shops and restaurants. Elevator made it easy to get to upper level. Balcony is spacious.

Review 48:Front desk clerks could have been more friendly enthusiastic possibly share a map it give some tips/ pointers on what to do or info.

Review 49:Comfortable clean and quiet.

Review 50:Despite the air conditioning, it was still a bit warm. Had to ask for more hot items during breakfast.

Review 51:Great, cozy place for the money. Not a huge room, but enough. Amenities were good. Location was awesome for the price. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 52:All of the breakfast options were way too sweet for our taste and fruit was limited. However, the coffee was good.

Review 53:The location was excellent and the free parking was a plus. The room was basic but was clean and had all we needed.

Review 54:We arrived early by train and asked if we could leave our bags. We were told by the desk clerk that they did not have a place to store our bags but we were welcome to leave them in the corner of the lobby. First time I have ever encountered a hotel with such a policy. Not very professional in my opinion.

Review 55:Very pleased with our room. Clean, quiet, nice location.

Review 56:Expensive. The staff at reception could have been a little more welcoming.

Review 57:The location was great. Close to the beach and not a long walk downtown. It was nice to have the pool to relax in the evening. Breakfast was fine.

Review 58:it's not one and a half block from the beach (the beach starts a couple of blocks south), but it's still well located, easy to find, with good parking space, breakfast area and wifi access

Review 59:In room air conditioner was loud and required running full time to keep room comfortable.

Review 60:Great location, walking distance to Funk Zone, harbor and water front.

Review 61:The hotel had a weird, eerie vibe to it. The lobby is very nice but the rest of the hotel seemed somewhat rundown. The location was convenient to the beach and Sate Street; however, walking at night, the streets were not very well lit and seemed a bit sketchy.

Review 62:Hotel upgraded us to a king suite room, served a great breakfast

Review 63:the coffee. way too weak!

Review 64:The staff was really nice! The place was clean. Short walk to the harbor. Breakfast was good. nice pool area. We plan to come back and stay longer. Our room was great! clean and above the pool with 3 queen beds. (great for family with preteens) Kids loved the breakfast!

Review 65:Pool was a bit small but didn't use it - we went to the beach instead which was 5mins walk.

Review 66:Breakfast was amazing! Get in early since there's a small seating area. Bed was very comfortable. Quick walk to harbour and wharf but quiet at night - perfect stay!

Review 67:First of all, the receptionist was very curt and rude. We booked 2 rooms in this hotel. My 80 year old Mother found a used condom in the shower. Not pleasant. We were unable to take to the owner. We spoke with the same receptionist about the used condom in the morning and she was sorry, but offered no compensation. I would never set foot in the place again. Also, upon arrival I noticed a heavy perfume (nauseating) in the reception room and asked about it, only to be told that people had complained about the smell of the room in the past. Thus the strong room freshener.

Review 68:Santa Barbara was probably our favourite of all the towns /cities we stopped in. The Avania was somewhat tired and definitely over priced compared to other hotels - is it because it's near the sea?

Review 69:Santa Barbara is a lovely town with unique character and a slower pace of life, which is really pleasant after the frenetic racing round of Los Angeles. Lovely climate too - was very hot on leaving LA (35°). Would come back.

Review 70:Pool was very small - hardly worth having.

Review 71:Comfortable beds, reasonable breakfast and great location. Everything I would expect from a hotel of this class. Staff were more helpful that anticipated though - genuinely interested, which was nice.

Review 72:Location to the facilities where ideal the way we where treated by the staff, the comfort and size of the rooms. the breakfast was amazing for a small hotel

Review 73:Noisey as cars parked close to room leaving at 5am. Ask for room on 1st floor. Very basic

Review 74:Good location, spacious room, large bed and single bed in room, parking.

Review 75:Rooms could use new paint, and a better color scheme. Microwave didn't work very well, TV was slow to respond, and Wi-Fi was dial-up speed. Pool was freezing cold.

Review 76:Room was very convenient, close to elevator, parking lot and lobby. Staff was very accomodating. Pretty good refrigerator, and lots of storage/closet space

Review 77:We had the best experience at the inn. The staff was very accomodating and we had a king room with a great view. The breakfast was good and I will return.

Review 78:The waitstaff at breakfast let the eggs and bread for toast go empty. Someone had to go tell the woman, who was sitting in the picture window in the nice comfy chair, to go get more. I thought she was a guest.

Review 79:The bed was very comfortable and we had a nice balcony from the 3rd floor facing the ocean direction. You can't really see the ocean but looking out over the palm trees made me feel like I was in HI. It's a good location to walk to the waterfront without paying ocean front prices.

Review 80:no complaints. Just know pool and spa are small.

Review 81:I asked for a quite room and we had the best room in the hotel. A view of the ocean, comfortable bed, all staff very helpful and friendly, walking distance to the beach and downtown or use of the trolley, good breakfast, and staff graciously helped with booking issues I had with booking.com. We would definitely return.

Review 82:The staff wasn't personable. I felt like the woman at the front desk was being inconvenienced when we checked in. For the money spent, the service could have been a lot better.

Review 83:The room was a good size and clean and also in a good location

Review 84:Front desk woman had an unwelcoming attitude, and made me less excited to upon arrival. Also, only view of neighborhood rooftops from my second-floor window. No DVD player.

Review 85:Close to the beach, gas station, 7-eleven. Nice, serene coloring in the rooms. Comfortable mattress and pillows. Clean. Had a mini fridge, microwave, and small coffee maker.

Review 86:Art work is really lacking except for filing a space on the walls and matching the decor color. But we still come back, but not for the art.

Review 87:Nice place, good location to walk to beach front or State Street. We have stayed here multiple times. We like the location and has been mostly quiet in when full.

Review 88:Didn't like the noise from construction on the street. The bathroom was very small (and I am not a large person). The elevator was very slow. Property in general seemed old but had been upgraded

Review 89:The property was clean. Bedding was comfortable.

Review 90:The inclusive breakfast is quite good but not brilliant. Can be improved on.

Review 91:We stayed here for two nights in a very clean and comfortable room. The hotel is located for easy access to the marina and beach and a further short walk to the centre of town. Parking and wi-fi are free and there'a a small swimming pool to the rear with plenty of sunbathing space, though the sun disappears from this area by about 5.30pm. The reception staff are very welcoming and helpful. We would certainly recommend this hotel to visitors.

Review 92:Overall feel of room is a bit too overwhelming. Everywhere you turn is turquoise blue & brown. Even the bathroom door & doorframe are painted blue! The shower floor is painted with some antislip that feel like sand.

Review 93:Room was very large & quiet. Breakfast was ok; we liked the waffles.

Review 94:The walls are paper thin. You literally cannot sleep in because you hear doors slam and elevators and people walking all around.

Review 95:The hotel was very clean! Really nice lobby!

Review 96:the receptionist was rude to say the least and breakfast included was appalling, but I guess for the price is ok, it just does not do for me

Review 97:the location was ok, and the value for money given it is Santa Barbara, the bed was confit maybe and the room was spacious and clean all great. A bit noisy in the morning but nothing special

Review 98:Breakfast very basic. The Pool is next to the street, looks much nicer on the pictures than it actually is. The whole hotel is rather basic and not worth spending over $200.

Review 99:Good location, very close to the beach, short walk to downtown Santa Barbara.

Review 100:Overnight is quite, but the hallways get noisy when people begin to walk around, so no sleeping in.

Review 101:We stayed one night over a major holiday weekend so the price was higher than usual so I am basing this on a regular rate. Location is great, easy to get to many sights. Plenty of parking, staff was friendly and greeted you with a smile.

Review 102:If they provide some info about Santa Barbara, like maps or list of places to visit or eat would be great

Review 103:Enough facilities in room, helping for early check in, kind people, well located place made my stay very pleasant

Review 104:Not a single bad experience.

Review 105:The two best things about this place are the porch with a nice view of Santa Barbara and the hot tub and pool. It was much needed after I ran the local half marathon! The room décor was lovely and the morning breakfast was great!

Review 106:Our friends tried to get a room there with us via phone, but did not want to give their credit card number over the phone. The staff person hung up on them. Not very hospitable or professional.

Review 107:We liked the location and the ill ow top bed.

Review 108:the service was great. The price on booking wasn't what they really charged us. Other then tht, it was great. Would go back. They cleaned rooms everyday.

Review 109:the lady in the front desk during the morning shift requires more training regarding customer service. Very rude. When asked about her name, she wrote it on a card and threw it on the counter. Did not even write her real name on d card when asked other staff about who she is.

Review 110:breakfast area layout needs redesign !

Review 111:Great location near the beach. Front desk staff very pleasant and helpful. Special thanks to Samantha for assistance with finding AAA to get my vehicle started.

Review 112:surly staff when I tried to check out in the morning. Couldnt get the check out woman to come out, despite send in another staff person twice. when she did come out, there was no apology for the 10 minute wait. I will never stay here again. There are other properties near by that are much better.

Review 113:great beds

Review 114:It seems to has had a face lift over the years, but they could really use new carpet in the hallways. It's kinda bad in some spots. Also the breakfast was pretty lack luster. They had plain oats but no toppings really for you to make oatmeal. I know a free breakfast is free for a reason, but most other hotels I've stayed at have a half decent one.

Review 115:Reasonable price and good location.

Review 116:Floors were dirty, breakfast was never fully catered so if you are not first in you will not get hot for other than the waffles. Rooms were not cleaned timely when returning to our room at 3 pm the room had still not been cleaned

Review 117:SPA WAS NOT WORKING AND THAT WAS A BIG DEAL BREAKER. WE WOULD NOT HAVE STAYED IF WE HAD KNOWN. LACK OF PARKING, HAD TO PARK ON STREET.

Review 118:LOCATION, COMFORT

Review 119:The employees doing the laundry making too much noise, banging on the wall and talking LOUD. I've never stayed in a hotel that was loud and inconsiderate of their customers. One lady was walking down the hall screaming out room #'s while the other was in the laundry room. So rude

Review 120:Location walking distance to the beach

Review 121:Cheap, shoddy decor. No water pressure. Bad water damage in one of our rooms. Air conditioner barely worked and was loud - but that was a blessing because it drowned out the noisiness from the parking lot below and slamming doors in hallway.

Review 122:Bed was really comfortable. Checkin was quick. Lobby is nice and a great breakfast offering!

Review 123:Not always easy to find parking, and would have to move car after 75 minutes of free parking, unless you found a lot where you pay after 75 min. There are a few around. They do check on the 75 minutes in the street.

Review 124:Great value for the area. Close to beach. Could walk to downtown. The 75 minute parking was good. Great to have frig and micro in room!

Review 125:Breakfast was the same every morning: A little variation on the eggs and meat, add in fresh cut up fruit would be nice for those who stay longer than two nights.

Review 126:Queen beds instead of doubles are easier to share. Thank you. They are hard to find when booking a hotel.

Review 127:All good.

Review 128:Great hotel for the price. SB hotels are generally quite pricey so this was good value for money. Good sized clean room, large very comfy bed, decent breakfast and a balcony to sit and have a drink on. Great location too. Short walk to both the beach and the city centre. Would definitely stay here again

Review 129:No vanilla creamer for my coffee. (Definitely nothing to complain about.)

Review 130:Great location, very comfortable beds. Great pillows. Pretty quiet. Breakfast was very nice.

Review 131:The WiFi did not connect to my computer and the computer in the lobby had a very limited browser. The phone in the room (212) did not work. The swimming pool is very small and not very inviting.

Review 132:The staff at the desk and throughout the hotel are reasonably friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the complementary newspaper in the morning. The ladies doing the breakfast do a good job.

Review 133:The Internet was pretty slow with business sometimes you have to do conference videos kept dropping me.

Review 134:The staff was very friendly the hotel was clean and the breakfast was awesome really scrambled eggs sausage and waffles and other amenities.

Review 135:cracked/torn seats on furniture in the breakfast area flat sheets on beds, exposed mattresses, bathroom painting peeling, ceilings looked old cracked

Review 136:breakfast in the morning

Review 137:They didn't open the common area (kitchen) until 7:30. I wanted to get in get a coffee and piece of fresh fruit and go... They need to open by 7.

Review 138:Price and nice enough staff and accomodations

Review 139:Elevator is a bit squeaky which is unnerving, but the stairs worked fine. :)

Review 140:Free breakfast included eggs and sausage. Free parking in Santa Barbara--wow! Free in-room wi-fi, but it is slow.
