Reviews for The Washington Inn

Review 1:Breakfast selection was mostly white carbs, not so great.

Review 2:Staff super friendly and helpful. Love a place that keeps tea and coffee makings available in the lobby at all times (if it's not in the room).

Review 3:I wish there was a fitness center or partner gym. But I went to 24 hour fitness at 20th and Webster.

Review 4:Perfect location for my plans. Traveled from/to SFO via BART, saw show at Fox Theatre, very easy access to Jack London Square and great restaurants.

Review 5:Very patchy internet Connection in room and lobby. Very small rooms to US standard Doors paper-thin and every step from room above could be heard. Luckily the other guests were early nighters too! Mini-closet for hanging clothes Poor service with towels, soap refill etc lead to frequent communication with front desk. Corrections were made eventually and in the end management offered an excuse and a discount on the rate. Hope the service improves based on the feedback.

Review 6:Close to BART station Oakland itself was an unexpected positive experience Nice restaurants around Old fashion style of lobby area in the hotel Quite area and no traffick around hotel

Review 7:pretty much anything. staff are indifferent, rooms are tiny, housekeeping is indifferent (a cabinet in my room did not open, no one ever replaced the soap/shampoo that was there when I checked in all thru my stay, the sheets did not really look crisp and clean, the breakfast was very basic and poor - and the staff were not that focused about replenishing the food etc.)

Review 8:it was close to where I needed to be

Review 9:Door was locked after midnight and no one was at the front desk. I didn't have my cell phone but staff personnel finally came and let me in. Should have someone at the door or room key access on the front door.

Review 10:Controlling the temperature was difficult, however being an older boutique hotel this is expected. Bed was quite stiff.

Review 11:The staff were fantastic. Bartender was creative and funny. The front staff were helpful and kind. The cook was the bomb!

Review 12:No vending machines available, so stock up before you settle in for the night or you will have to run across the street to the Marriot vending machines. I did that at about 12:30am without any problems, but would have been nice to have a vending machine onsite. No other complaints.

Review 13:Location is absolutely perfect! This hotel is a hidden gem. Clean, comfortable, great staff and safe! Great for a solo traveler or a group. Parking available for a reasonable price. I was a little worried staying in Oakland by myself, but let me tell you...as soon as I walked in, my fears were put to rest. This place is so full of history and character. The pictures on the internet do not do it justice. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I never needed my car. All the restaurants and bars are in short walking distance. Literally around the corner and / or down the street you have a wide variety of places to enjoy dinner and drinks. I felt like I had rented an apartment and I did not want to leave. I will definitely be back!

Review 14:Stayed in room 402 Too loud, parking not ideal, shower water way to hot or way to cold, room size small alittle crowded

Review 15:Great Vintage feel small close to food good location.Bed was very comfortable

Review 16:When I arrived (12/12 @ 4:00 pm), the hotel employee at the reservation desk said: "What do you want?", in a non-friendly tone. It was clear that he was busy, an event was occurring later that evening, and he resented our taking some of his time. I also asked a few questions, to which his body language and tone implied irritation. Other staff were friendly. The hotel in general needs significant work to bring it up to a reasonable quality standard.

Review 17:The location was fairly close to good restaurants, some limited shopping, the Oakland China Town, and a Bart station.

Review 18:Few Ammenities, Small Room. Bed not too comfy. Ad says "bar in hotel" but didn't mention for "happy hour only".

Review 19:Very Friendly Staff. Great Location/easy access to BART. Quaint "old-timey" Atmosphere. Cool Old Building.

Review 20:The walls of the hotel are so thin that you can hear other people on both sides of the room. The hair dryer was broken and the pillows were flat.

Review 21:The hotel location was perfect. Near Chinatown and very close to the city center. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Review 22:The hotel was old, in poor condition, a room was very small, a shower looked disgusting but the price was $160/night (with tax)!!!

Review 23:Location for my needs.

Review 24:The convention center parking could be a little easier if I didn't have to bring back the gate card. But wasn't a deal breaker.

Review 25:Very cozy. Like better than most of the chains we normally stay at.

Review 26:They did not provide any historical pictures of the place, or written material on the walls. Changes made thoughout the years.

Review 27:the oldest of the hotel, thinking back how it was when it first opened its doors in Oakland.

Review 28:Incidentally, the only one available elevator was out of order. We had to use narrow stairs for carrying our heavy luggage. Payment should be discounted.

Review 29:Traditional style of the building and room is nice.

Review 30:Breakfast is awful and WiFi pretty non-existent... But if you are there for family time thats a good thing.

Review 31:It is a place with a lot of history, staff is very kind and the location is fabulous! It is old but clean.

Review 32:Appears generally run down and old. Sink did not drain properly. Signs direct to an ice machine that does not exist. Overall, property appears less well maintained than at last visit. I usually stay at Civic Center Lodge, also close to BART, recently refurbished and a much better value (although no breakfast).

Review 33:Location is great, close to BART

Review 34:Horrible cramped room......dark......depressing......sad continental breakfast.

Review 35:NOTHING.........at one time, the hotel had character.......not kept up......

Review 36:The room was tiny and the lights would go off and then turn back on and flicker. The stairway was also really narrow making it hard to walk up if other people were walking down.

Review 37:It was really close to the concert venue and parking was right across the street from the hotel. The staff was really nice and helpful.

Review 38:The parking situation is overly complicated. Have to go back and forth from garage delivering tickets and plastic scan cards. Have to get temporary parking to give back plastic card or they will charge $75. Staff were hard to understand and gave poor instructions regarding parking. Walls are paper thin.

Review 39:Location

Review 40:Parking! Had to pay for it plus I had to walk to get it . Elevators were not working, had to hump everything to the 3rd floor. Felt sorry for the older couples in the building ! Smh! Plus the AC in the room wasn't blowing well as our friends room next door. Told front desk about it and did nothing about it

Review 41:Area was good. bART is around the corner.

Review 42:They did not disclose a 50th birthday bash would occupy the restaurant and bar. They didn't offer to discount our stay after we shared our fears of the fight that broke out from party goers.

Review 43:We had booked 2 rooms for 2 nights with queen size beds. They only had us in their system for one room for 2 nights. Hotel was fully booked. They managed to put us into two rooms with full size beds. Beds were not very comfortable.

Review 44:Good place to stay outside San Francisco. Close to BART. Breakfast was good. I had a bad fall in San Francisco. Staff was gracious enough to cancel the second night when I had to return home for surgery.

Review 45:We liked the atmosphere of the hotel. It was quirky and interesting. Had a good vibe and is a great location. Sure it's seen better days but that was part of its charm.

Review 46:There was no information booklet in our room so I had to keep asking reception how to use the phone, what time breakfast was etc.

Review 47:Reasonably priced hotel in a good location, very near to a BART station for getting into San Fransisco town centre. Lots of good restaurants in the locality for eating in the evening.

Review 48:Wifi is slow and malfunctioning constantly.

Review 49:The location very close to BART, the place is warm and it has an old style, specially the hall and the elevator. The bed was very very comfortable.

Review 50:We loved our stay room was big with a separate living area with two TVs On separate living area with two TVs on each Sharon e in each room The bed was big and very comfortable sheets and pillows were super clean bathroom is clean they just needed the dust a little bit

Review 51:Horrible bed. Skimpy on bath priducts. Terrible coffee and breakfast was cheap. Not good for a hip location with great food and coffee everywhere in town. Check in staff was barely professional

Review 52:Location. Near great restaurants. And big shower with good water pressure

Review 53:Breakfast is not very good, even for continental style breakfast. Not for what you charge per night. Anyway. Inconvenient to have to return parking pass every time you get your car from garage.

Review 54:Location is convenient, staff is friendly, place is clean.

Review 55:No parking. You can park overnight on the street, but had to pay at the meter at 8am.

Review 56:I liked the old fashioned style of everything. My kids loving having their own room with their own TV.

Review 57:Convenient location in downtown Oakland, 2 blocks from BART. Comfortable rooms and free breakfast. A good value for money option for when SF prices are sky high.

Review 58:Front desk was friendly but check in clerk did not tell us about the $15 discounted parking. Breakfast offering very poor. Check out we had to use a parking pass and then drive back and return it.

Review 59:Stuff in the area closes early (convenience stores, etc.), so a vending machine or something like that would have been nice when the hotel bar was closed, especially since the rooms don't have mini frigs, etc.

Review 60:The location was excellent and close to the Bart. The weekly farmer's market takes place practically right in front of the hotel. Good restaurants in Swann's right across the street. Liked the more intimate scale of the hotel and its historic touches.

Review 61:Not really enough space for three adults in our rather stuffy room. Irritating that a sensible policy of asking for towels for washing to be left on the floor, the cleaner took them all away frrom the rails on the first day, and in a four night stay, never once left sufficient towels for the three of us.

Review 62:That we could travel around so easily with a Bart station very close, and if travelling on the very good buses San Fra, everyone know Wilshire Boulevard.

Review 63:The breakfast was the smallest I've ever seen. There are a few bagels and old slices up muffins. That's about it.

Review 64:Located very close to subway station, it takes about 15 to 20 minuten to get to downtown SF.

Review 65:The first night we arrived, the person that was at the desk not very helpful. He acted like we were a burden to him when we had questions. One of his answers - "use your smart phone." Well my smart phone was not working, Wifi was not good. The rest of the staff were nice and willing to help us as necessary. We are by far not difficult customers. From our daily life, we have customers too so we try very hard not to cause headache for other people.

Review 66:The location is near the BART system.

Review 67:Elevator was out of service for almost two days of our stay. We were on the fourth floor so this was inconvenient and no compensation was given. We also thought that it was odd that the bar and restaurant were open for a limited number of hours( 5-9 p.m.). However, there were a good selection of restaurants nearby.

Review 68:Staff was friendly.

Review 69:Wi-Fi was awful, almost unusable. Check in staff on first night was indifferent, though everyone else was pleasant. Wi-Fi was awful, almost unusable. Check in staff on first night was indifferent, though everyone else was pleasant. Need more hangers in the closet. Temperature a little hard to regulate.

Review 70:Location and price were great. Housekeeping staff was very nice. Breakfast was better than some, but not great. Excellent alternative to the Convention Center Marriott across the street. Great shower.

Review 71:Location just 3 blocks from the fox theater in oakland. Small room but comfortable. Excellent pub behind - amazing food at Pacific Coast Brewery.

Review 72:The front desk wasn't super friendly... They didn't tell me that they didn't have a parking lot until I asked. I didn't like the fact that I had to park across the way in a parking structure and lug all my luggage to the hotel. Wifi connection was horrible!

Review 73:The location was near several restaurants and in the downtown area.

Review 74:Lovely old hotel in the centre of Oakland. Easy access for the airport, great downtown restaurants and access to the Oakland A's. Close to shops and the airport.

Review 75:It was high priced. Hard to swallow price tag, but great location and much cheaper than the hotels around the area.

Review 76:great location and super helpful staff.

Review 77:Trash pU in the morning- too loud. Parking was across the street in the convention center.

Review 78:I like the lighting, the old age and the decoration of each room. Room was clean and bed ok. Location is ok for the state and federal bldgs.

Review 79:Breakfast definitely needs upgrading. Cold eggs, store pastries, and awful bread. I've had better in cheap hostels. Lose the plasticware and all the use once utensils. Even dollarstore china, deli from nextdoor supermarket and any tablecloth would make it feel more like a $140 hotel. Free WiFi is pathetic in speed, many dropouts from poor signal, but also from network.

Review 80:Room/bed/bathroom were clean

Review 81:It's an older hotel. The room was small and oddly laid out, with the sink in the room instead of the bathroom, and no counter space.

Review 82:Bartender Irene is a pro. Restaurant was a real find, great food at nice prices. Bed very comfortable. Close to BART and Amtrak.

Review 83:Staff was indifferent. Parking system was inconvenient, but reasonably priced. Complimentary breakfast not so good.

Review 84:Location. Nice neighborhood. Room was comfortable. Rate was reasonable.

Review 85:Room furnishings a bit tatty, but clean. WiFi internet connection a bit slow and unreliable at times. Plastic bowls and 'cutlery' for breakfast!

Review 86:Friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable room. Free WiFi.

Review 87:Didn't have reservation correct (via internet) n parking was less than ideal.

Review 88:Staff worked with reservation issue n discounted room, got rollaway for 2nd guest. Which was not ideal but better than canceling reservation since we were already there.

Review 89:The neighborhood is up and coming, not bad overall, but there are homeless nearby. Note that the Marriott is DIRECTLY across the street so they deal with the same population

Review 90:The price and cleanliness of this hotel are great. It has a free continental breakfast and the rooms are big enough and clean.

Review 91:Bathroom shower was dirty & toilet was not working. no time to let them know as I was out very early to conference & in late.

Review 92:Staff was very friendly, Breakfast was wonderful.

Review 93:The hotel was old and smelled old. I couldn't get past the smell and wound up checking out the same day I checked in.

Review 94:The staff were friendly and the location ideal.

Review 95:The room was clean, the sheets were fresh and the bed was cozy! No complaints at all. Nicely updated for an older hotel and conveniently located across from the Convention center and a few blocks from the Fox Theater.

Review 96:The only thing I can think of that might be a little negative, was the size of the room, and we did not get a window with a view. But we did not spend much time in the room so it was perfect.

Review 97:Great Price, wonderful staff, convenient location and generally great experience.

Review 98:Had the best room in the Inn (a suite) for less than the cheapest room in the Marriot across the street. Good breakfast. 24hr coffee. Very friendly, helpful staff. Great restaurants within steps. Walk to Jack London Sq and Museum. Will return!

Review 99:No concerns.

Review 100:I spent 6 days at this quaint, hotel and found the accommodations wonderful. The bed was comfortable, and while the room was a tad small, I didn't mind because I really only slept thete.

Review 101:The sink and mirror are in the room and it the bathroom but it wasn't a big deal.

Review 102:This hotel didnot smell bad, as many do - it was neither musty nor filled with air freshener. Our room was on an interior courtyard so it was quiet.

Review 103:the room was a bit inconvenient. more space for shaving equipment and toiletries and a closet would have made it more functional for business travel. No fitness room.

Review 104:location and older character of the hotel. charming lobby.

Review 105:Bathroom wasn't very clean. Internet was spotty and did not always work.

Review 106:The room felt luxurious at a nice price. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Location ideal.

Review 107:Even on a busy/hectic check-in day like New Years Eve in Oakland the staff were helpful polite and made everything easy. The rooms are comfy and very clean with nice fixtures.

Review 108:Customer service was poor. Had issues with the wifi, they seem to not care, wake up call not given when requested and needed a cab and it did not happen. The room was small but I was travelling by myself so it was not a real problem. The room was clean, the bathroom was clean but it smelled like bleach. If you don't care about customer service, go for it. There are other hotels in this area, so I would check them out before coming back here. But I may come back here.

Review 109:The convenience of the location. Easy to get to from airport using BART. Amenities in the area, banks, drug stores, restaurants.

Review 110:-No free parking in the area (pay for street parking or garage) -The street outside can be noisy

Review 111:-Good location in downtown Oakland -Live piano player and comedy show at hotel -Free breakfast -Interesting classic hotel

Review 112:The staff were very friendly and honored my request of having a room with a view. The hotel felt historic and charming and is located in the heart of budding downtown oakland.

Review 113:I didnt likeep that the room didn't have any closet space. Also the elevator needs work.

Review 114:The staff is really great! Very quick check in and the room was clean and set up very quaint. The room lacks a closet so dont reserve if u plan to stay for a while. The garlicky Chicken from the restaurant is phenomenal. That Is the reason I'm staying at the hotel.

Review 115:Parking situation is not what I was expecting. Using the garage across the is gonna set you back at least $15.

Review 116:It is a well kept older building. Facilities were pretty nice.

Review 117:obnoxious cars but you can't really put that on the hotel nothing else!

Review 118:very close to Bart station right next to awesome market BEAUTIFUL rooms the comfiest bed in the world

Review 119:No parking, lack of power outlets, had to walk down to the 1st floor to get ice / microwave

Review 120:Positives: Great location, very quiet, staff was cool, price was right

Review 121:I parked right in front of the hotel and my car window was busted out bygod knows who.... I then realized that 2 other vehicles had theirwindows busted out too. This ruined my beautiful trip and cost me 320.00dollars.....

Review 122:Everything inside the hotel was excellent......

Review 123:They had technical problems: Elevator not working when arrived, had to wait to take bag to 4th flr room. Worked later. Television not working the whole time I was there. They did work on it, but were unable to fix in 24 hours I was there. (something with the satellite -- entire hotel affected) Phone didn't work properly. Room service ice cream order cancelled as freezer wasn't working properly. Sink was in room rather than bathroom. Had just a shower, no tub.

Review 124:The bed was very comfortable. Location was Great for conference at the convention center. Closer even than looked on a map. Staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful. Air conditioning was good. Decor was new and pleasant. Room was quiet. Didn't try breakfast that was provided. Good deal for surrounding area, in terms of price. Would stay again and hope that technology problems were fixed.

Review 125:Parking was off-site, across the street at the convention center.

Review 126:The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful, and the location was very convenient. The bed was quite comfortable

Review 127:Our room and many others had a step down from the level of the entry and bathroom to the level of the bed. Very hazardous. Tv reception was very poor. Room was cramped. Lobby not set up well for breakfast - no tables.

Review 128:The place was clean and staff were congenial. Breakfast was okay but nothing special.

Review 129:- no adequate seating facilities for the breakfast. There would be a Restaurant which is not open for breakfast...

Review 130:+ near to BART station + clean + friendly and helpful staff + wlan

Review 131:We stayed there while a bunch of guest were having a reunion party. When we returned from our awesome evening out we were invited to join the party! We had the best time.

Review 132:Clean, good location. Room small but I was not there to hang out in room. One desk staff helpful, knowledgable. The other friendly but couldnt assist w/ BART, bus or other area questions.

Review 133:nothing. It was perfect for me needs. A place to sleep.

Review 134:Suite was spacious, old hotel with character, bed was firm but comfortable, great location - next to Chinatown, convention center, 5 minute walk from museum, able to activate parking meter in morning from my room to save some on parking

Review 135:We were told we couldn't check in early and call if you were going to be after midnight so they held your room even though you have a credit card guarantee late check in. We called at 6 told them we would be late and had to give a time when we would be there. We got to the hotel before our time and got our room however upon entering it was one full bed and we were 4 adults I went back to front desk to be told they were sold out..I explained I had a reservation for two beds and no we couldn't make that room work...I also explained I was there at noon and called at 6 having no idea why my room was given away...the clerk went to talk to the mgr who comp my room and put two of us up in the Marriott across the street paying the difference between their room and the Marriott..so the manager did a good job but it shouldn't have happened.

Review 136:It was a nice older building. The Lobby was clean and the room was spacious..we tried to check in early but could not...though they do allow you to leave your luggage so we could site see..
