Reviews for Hi - Sacramento Mansion Hostel
Review 1:Staff might be away for more than 5 mins, but there's a number you can call if you need immediate help. Be prepared for stairs - no elevator. ;)
Review 2:Good location right behind City Hall, short walk from Capitol. Very Beautiful building! Staff is nice and provides you with a city map, recommendations of sightseeing and restaurants included! :) Just remember it's a hostel, not a hotel (meaning for example shared bathroom, not the newest bathrooms, but it was clean)
Review 3:My bunk mates were all either snoring or coughing so it was an unbearable night. But the amenities and staff were great.
Review 4:If was a little cold in the room at first; but warmed up. This is a huge place to keep warm in Winter.
Review 5:Staff very helpful. Limited on time, staff directed me to the best museums to see, also transportation to airport was a breeze! Thanks to all.
Review 6:The facility was cold and even water in the shower was running cold.
Review 7:The receptionist was nice and helpful. The hostel was clean. The breakfast was delicious, bagels, cream cheese, pastry, fruit, coffee, tea, toasts.
Review 8:No hot water in shower. Building needs updating, it appears nothing has been done since turning it into a hostel in 1990. Everything appears outdated and worn out whether its the flooring, decor, shower stall etc.
Review 9:Location and staff
Review 10:Parking gate constantly malfunctioned and made beeping noise whenever it didn't open fully.
Review 11:Front desk staff very helpful and friendly. Like that house rules are spelled out. Use key code instead of physical key
Review 12:N/a
Review 13:The convenience of evrythng was walking distance. We didn't get to eat breakfast :( and we didn't get to enjoy the patio. We got there a little late..
Review 14:We loved our stay here. It's a great experience to stay in such an elegant historic house. The amenities are perfectly adequate and the staff are extraordinarily friendly and helpful. Thank you all. Liz and Tony Clemow (NZ)
Review 15:I liked everything about this hostel. The old mansion house, the way it was decorated. The staff, the cleanliness, and the location. As a solo traveller from Europe, I found this hostel really attractive, and will recommend it to friends.
Review 16:I didn't like the fact that we had to leave the game room at 11 pm for lights out.
Review 17:I liked that there was a billiard table to play on and foosball too.
Review 18:The historical house was incredible until I had to carry my bag up to the 3rd floor ;) be ready for lots of steps.
Review 19:Great location in the downtown area and a unique and beautiful house.
Review 20:It was a great experience, but a staff member did give me the wrong information about a bus to the airport. When I figured it out I ended up cutting it kind of close re: my flight time. I just would expect them to know, or at least not give me incorrect information if they don't know.
Review 21:An absolutely beautiful building — the pictures don't do it justice. The staff was helpful and there are lots of comfortable spaces to relax. The porch is great for a morning coffee.
Review 22:Nothing!
Review 23:Clean & comfortable.....the location was great. I was attending a conference and chose this over the staying at the hotel where the conference was held. The price point was almost half. I highly recommend the Sacramento Mansion.
Review 24:I arrived at hostel and told the personell I was not going to sleep there, just take a shower and leave. The lady told me they will not charge me if I wasn't using the room, but when I arrived home, they had charged me 100%. Im trying to get the refund but they refuse.
Review 25:Compared to european hostels the breakfast is quite poor. But thats just an american thing and I had way worse breakfast in other US hostels.
Review 26:Just an extraordinary hostel. Great mansion, friendy staff, very cclean and all that for a low price.
Review 27:beautiful piece of history in sacramento. Loved the receptionist who offered a little prize for hitting a target with a nerf gun upon arriving. Thanks: you would not find this in a five star hotel.
Review 28:this had nothing to do with the hostel or staff but there was a horrible toxic woman constanly on a lap top 24 hours a day shes still there but watch out she can be racist in her comments
Review 29:the building is stunning, the area lovely, have stayed here a few times and plan to stay here again, the staff are fab
Review 30:Staff is friendly & inviting, facilities are clean, big community fridge & kitchen to cook & store food. Friday night they ran a movie & s'mores event, a pleasant surprise. Rooms are clean. Bathrooms & showers clean. This is my third visit to this hostel, it's an excellent value & I will return again for my Sacramento travels.
Review 31:Amazing hostel!!! Can't wait to return! Staff were so friendly and helpful. Location was excellent!! Walking distance to so many shops, pubs and restaurants! Beautiful area.
Review 32:This would be better appreciated as a longer stay; I only stayed one night and didn't get to appreciate and use all the amenities this location afforded. Bathrooms were a little dirty but acceptable for the price.
Review 33:The house was very beautiful and was located close to many attractions.
Review 34:When checking in, the hostel request for the extra membership fee $3 per day. However, it wasn't shown on the total fee that I have to pay when I reserved it via Booking.com. Thus it would be highly recommended to charge the membership fee in advance when making the reservation. And then, the checking time, as a membership can be reduced the daily fee instead. Please do not just ask for the additional fee when arriving. Or please kindly indicate more specifically and make sure the customers will know it on line earlier. Thank you very much.
Review 35:Beautiful house. Cozy bed and neat environment. The streets are also quiet and clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The roommates are nice and considerate.
Review 36:Walking distance from train station, old town, parks, restaurants, bars, etc. I loved the porch and outdoor spaces, and the showers were the best of any hostel I've stayed in. Diverse group of travelers.
Review 37:I was very disappointed that handicapped facilities were not downstairs and I had painful walks up the stairs and frightening going down stairs. No handicapped showers, they are downstairs. The ramp goes right in the downstairs door. No stair climbing whatsoever. It was hard and it will maybe change my mind about staying there after many years. Also the bathrooms and carpets upstairs have deteriorated. A house as beautiful and historic as that one is deserves to be taken care of. A lot of time and money went into moving and restoring that home. Why are the guys downstairs anyway?
Review 38:I like the casual and friendly people I meet there and visit with.
Review 39:The breakfast was fairly weak. Improve this and its a near perfect hostel. Also the parking situation was weird, the lot was near empty but we were told it was "full" and so we were forced to park on the street and pay the fair during the day. Not the end of the world but annoying.
Review 40:The house was amazing! The rooms were great and big! The beds were comfortable. There were places to hang out in the hostel and a kitchen to use as well as a place to store food.
Review 41:just for convenience, more hooks in bathroom showers would be helpful - thanks
Review 42:Great old building, nice people, good group meals and activities if want to partake
Review 43:My room was located next to the bathroom so was abit noisy at times.
Review 44:Ive visited Sacramento from London several times but this is the first time ive stayed at this hostel. Great atmosphere, great location, great staff will definately stay here again!
Review 45:There was no curtain in the bedroom and the breakfast was too limited and not very often refilled. Also the controlled airco very noicy and not working the Second night (during the day over 103 decreet f).
Review 46:Nice mansion, great staff
Review 47:I had to leave too soon. Would have preferred a group of tables for 4 or 6 in the dining area instead of long conference tables - would have improved the ambiance. Tablecloths also would have contributed to the private home feel of the property.
Review 48:Friendly staff who make you feel genuinely welcome. Other guests warm and friendly without being intrusive. Comfortable public areas - large kitchen that a number of guests could use at once without being crowded.
Review 49:There was a dead bird in the Fountain on the patio that was quickly removed and I trust that the fountain will be cleaned out regularly...the bees gather round it for water..Big thanks!
Review 50:It is nice to be recognized and remembered by Casey and Travis... Love the interesting travelers that I meet there and the elegance of the building as well as the great price!!!
Review 51:No complaints.
Review 52:Beautiful old building. Very clean. Our first time in a hostel and we found it a great experience. Loved chatting to other international travellers.
Review 53:The trash hadn't been emptied, the light was out in the bathroom, the previous guests belongings hadn't been removed, and it would have been nice if there was a table to set things on.
Review 54:A beautiful place right in downtown Sacramento. Very good value. For a hostel, it was remarkably quiet.
Review 55:Window would not stay open. If I were staying in summer Window hard to keep open
Review 56:Great location, beautiful historic Mansion and very helpful staff.
Review 57:Breakfast was a little disappointing as there was no wheat bread or whole wheat bagels. Stairs were hard on my knees
Review 58:The mansion is beautiful and the staff were very helpful and accommodating.
Review 59:Basement room was nicely and brightly painted... but the brick walls had a very dungeony feeling.
Review 60:HI-Sacramento has done a fine job of preserving the historical nature and feel of the downtown Victorian. Beautiful ceilings, period furniture, and a welcoming and hospitable staff.
Review 61:Didn't like having to pay to use Internet....just wanted to print boarding pass so opted not to use the system. Would've liked a little variety of produce with breakfast....only apples served with oatmeal & toast.
Review 62:Beautiful building; spacious private queen room with bath; lovely patio; nice staff; fun meeting other people from around the country.
Review 63:The historic part was well maintained, the 3rd floor was sterile and not keep as well.
Review 64:It was fun just to say you stayed in a house fit for the likes of Stanford and Crocket. Great use of an old grand Mansion from the gold rush days!
Review 65:Zippers. I was in the women's dorm, and a few women got up in the5-o'clock hour and unzip, zip the bag over and over it seemed asthey got ready to go and gathered their stuff. Ban zippers! :) Also, thetraffic on h starts early! Note there is a $3 Hostel fee if you are nota hostel member.
Review 66:The bed was very comfortable, the kitchen open-access, the bathroomsclean. I was in a dorm with bunks, which is fine if you don't mindroom-mates.
Review 67:No elevator to carry bag to room, and bags had to be lifted and carried upstairs rather than trundled. Lighting in common areas was not very good for reading.
Review 68:Ease of contacting staff, ease of access to bathroom, the two stairways, the outstanding architecture and complementing decor including comfortable armchairs in the public areas. And the bed was surprisingly comfortable. I liked the peace and quiet of the place. My room was reasonable temperature, the windows could open, with lace curtains and optional blackout curtains to draw closed. The street noise was not bothersome although some nights I did not fall asleep quickly. And I was surprised that I did not to have to wait for a shower stall. Convenient parking for only $5 per day so near downtown where it is easy to pay $2 per half hour! Checkout could not have been easier and I was allowed to use the parking lot some extra. Nice and soulful DVDs and house music!
Review 69:House is old and big, feels like set back into the 1800s. High walls and windows, fireplaces. Lobby with TV and books, even a piano. Location is great, short walk into city of Sacramento, and only a 12 mile drive to airport. They even serve a little breakfast. Everything great!
Review 70:This beautiful old house has a lot of character, many people were very kind, and I appreciated the feeling in the house. Unfortunately my private room had a door to another room, and even though it was locked, it seemed like I could hear every conversation and even heavy breathing. Also, the shower situation made me nervous at first. When I took my first shower in the guy's bathroom, mid afternoon, and got half undressed, another guest twice tried to open my shower stall. It looked like he was trying to force it open on the second try, but he gave up (the lock stopped him) and he didn't apologize. That incident reinforced my faith in the locks, and the fact he gave up persuaded me that the guest was rude but maybe made a mistake. Fortunately that was the last awkward situation during my stay. I'm also glad the bathrooms on each floor are separate for the genders. While I think this is an important point to understand for prospective guests, I was surprised overall that I became comfortable with this shared bathroom situation. Maybe it helps to think of the bathroom situation like a college dorm experience.
Review 71:The staff were very helpful and kind, as were the guests. Staff helped me navigate public transportation, find my way in town, and helped me confirm and catch my ride to the airport. I found staff and guests easy to talk with and was comfortable. I'll likely return to Sacramento and if I can, I'd be happy to reserve a room again. I also recommend this place, though looking at this and other reviews may help you shape your expectations so you are not surprised by how this good place can differ from a hotel.
Review 72:I had asked for the VIP room, which they told me at check would be available for my second night, then gave it to someone else. Also was overcharged relative to the booking.com price, but only trivially.
Review 73:nice building
Review 74:Friendly staff who are on a level with you, rather than the usual 'we are staff and you are the customer' vibe in other hostels/hotels. The house is incredible, love the games room and the break out areas too. Kitchen is also beautiful along with the outside patio area.
Review 75:Possibly a little bit more variety in the breakfast breads.
Review 76:The staff are lovely and I felt they went out of their way to help. The house is beautiful. I met some very nice fellow hostellers.
Review 77:the bed was not very comfortable I thought for the money 95.00 a night I could have gotten better amenities at a hotel
Review 78:I liked the building the woodwork was beautiful
Review 79:One staff member was on her phone the whole time I was downstairs and never even said hi. Customer service is very important, especially at lodging facilities, so a simple greeting would have been nice. Also, I would suggest to notify visitors if there are going to be ongoing exclusive group meetings. It was a little awkward to be around while they were trying to have their meetings.
Review 80:Most of the staff were very friendly and greeted with a smile. They were willing to go out of their way to accommodate and Marc took time to get to know the visitors. The outside area is absolutely beautiful and serene. I loved going out by the fountain at night
Review 81:The mens urinal was down. And the toilet stall had a bit of a sour smell. Granted, there were other bathrooms in building, just the one by my room was not totally working. Sorry, but that's what I experienced.
Review 82:I liked everything except....
Review 83:I mistakenly paid for a private room, when the only bathroom working was two floors away. The whole place was overrun by 11 year old girls who were literally screaming and slamming doors when I arrived (2:30PM) and again at 6:45 AM. Maybe worth $25, or whatever the bunkroom rate is, but absolutely a waste of $75 (the private room rate). The breakfast was granny smith apples and English muffins (cream cheese was gone by 8am), and there was no toilet paper in the bathrooms when I arrived, even though they had ostensibly been cleaned just 30 minutes before.
Review 84:It's a pretty old house with an oldfashioned grand staircase.
Review 85:Took forever to check in, staff talking to the person ahead of me for way too long rather than just checking me in before continuing conversation. There were quite a lot of raised voices arguing in the communal areas late. There isn't much for breakfast and nobody explains what you can/can't use. If you're renting a private room rather than a dorm it's basically the same as a hotel anyway
Review 86:Great location a few minutes from city centre, old sac, Capitol, museum, station etc
Review 87:nothing with the hostel
Review 88:the staff was really friendly and helped me to find some of the good spots to go in Sacramento. There's breakfast!! Beautiful mansion. Very clean and comfortable beds for a hostel.
Review 89:Sacramento as a city itself is really terrible. Lots of crime, homeless and dirty. Don't recommend coming to travellers!
Review 90:The hostel was a beautiful huge old mansion with all the character you would expect! Lovely staff and good rooms for a really great price in central Sacramento.
Review 91:While trying to sleep in the female dormitory someone came in a turned on the light which was very rude and annoying. Some other non-english speaking girls were talking and whispering loudly in the bunks above me which kept me up and was creepy and annoying.
Review 92:I liked the concierge. She was perfect for the place. I loved the living rooms downstairs with the comfy chairs. Also loved the big porch. I didnt get to enjoy everything because it was a short trip.
Review 93:A little noisy, but not too bad or unexpected for a hostel.
Review 94:We really enjoyed the central location (walking distance to Old Sacramento and the state capitol), and the building itself is beautiful, historic, and a little quirky. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable.
Review 95:We were in the private room down in the basement...it was comfortable and had windows. A little dreary. The yellow color at the base of the stairs is very creepy and off putting. It would be nice to have some whole wheat bagels and muffins.
Review 96:Beautiful architecture and awesome location. The staff were so pleasant to interact with. The parking was super convenient. It was such a fun experience to stay there. I love seeing young travelers from around the world.
Review 97:Nothing at all actually. Everything was perfect for me. I couldnt ask for more. I strongly recommend this hostel. I especialy appreciated the staff, they have been really helpful to me. You should
Review 98:The staff is awesome and i made a lot of friends!
Review 99:The lack of circulating air throughout the house and the lack of cooler air in the upstairs dorm. One non-rotating floor fan in the dorm room was not enough to circulate the air throughout the room for a more comfortable sleep. A better fan circulating system could be devised. At 4:45 am having to walk alone with several pieces of luggage four blocks past the downtown park with people sleeping against the buildings in order to catch the airport bus left me quite hurried and anxious.
Review 100:The historical elegance of the mansion was a pure delight. Excellent job refurbishing it. Enjoyed meeting and conversing with fellow travelers. Especially enjoyed being invited out to an evening in Old Sacramento with a fellow dormmie from the hostel. The stay filled my down time in Sacramento with pleasant memories.
Review 101:When we made our reservation we reserved a private room with bathroom. Thinking we were getting one of the period-style rooms. We ended up getting a room in the basement with bare cinderblock walls. We could hear people walking around the first floor above our heads all night and morning. On top of it all, we paid 90 dollars for this substandard situation and were never told (warned) that the room we were reserving was in the basement.
Review 102:Good location, attractive house, nice staff
Review 103:There was not enough air circulation to benefit from the air conditioning on the second floor on up. Heat rises. The air was too still.
Review 104:Beautiful restoration of the mansion.
Review 105:It's an average hostel. Nice building and clean, but open to all ages which I thought was weird. It's probably the best in Sacramento though.
Review 106:The staff were super helpful and kind. The facility is BEAUTIFUL. The location is great.
Review 107:Room was cold but the staff lent us a heater
Review 108:great old mansion, sheets were fabulous, nice breakfast, staff
Review 109:I loved the facilities, the location and the price.
Review 110:Location, ambiance
Review 111:Nothing
Review 112:Everything
Review 113:Friendly staff, beautiful accommodations, clean facility & delicious breakfast options!
Review 114:The room was cold during the night, no heating.
Review 115:Nice hostel in an old House, close to the city. A lot of common rooms to sit down and calm.
Review 116:Hot water in showers was sometimes patchy.
Review 117:Very warm, hospitable and helpful staff.
Review 118:Need was uncomfortable
Review 119:First time staying at s hostel. Was glad we ended up with a bathroom in our room.
Review 120:Poor breakfast! No orange juice, not a big choice as they described on the web site.
Review 121:No BR in the room
Review 122:Nice building Nice location Very nice staff Very nice atmosphere
Review 123:Loved it. It's like your own condo etc.
Review 124:Still find American continentals a bit odd
Review 125:Location staff and facilities all great
Review 126:celebrating international peace day with pizza
Review 127:Wonderfully helpful and friendly staff! Building is very charming and quiet - doesn't feel like a hostel at all. Private rooms are great value.
Review 128:What a cool building!
