Reviews for Hotel Orion
Review 1:Nothing, wish we had stayed for more than one night. Intend to go back soon, kids loved it.
Review 2:We recently spent a night in this wonderful hotel. The room we had was enormous and very clean and comfortable. Gerald, the owner, could not be more friendly or helpful and added to our experience of Ghent by spending a lot of time explaining about the hotel, town, etc. The hotel is beautiful and includes private use of the pool / sauna. Breakfast included a wide range of items so that even our fussy children didn't complain! Highly recommended.
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:Room probably largest European room we will ever have!!! Mini bar, tons of space! Very clean. Super friendly staff. Breakfast was good. Only 10 Euros to take cab for 5 people to Ghent city center. Train close by too.
Review 5:Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Beautiful building. Convenient location. They provided tickets for bus/tram. Stop was right around the corner. Breakfast was wonderful. Pool was so warm and relaxing and available for private use. It was a wonderful stay!
Review 6:No restaurant in the hotel and breakfast was expensive for what was on offer. On the night we arrived, there was only one restaurant open within walking distance. There were, however, several take-away food outlets nearby.
Review 7:Lovelly Room with large comfy bed, tea making facliities, a great shower and very clean. Oh, and dog friendly.
Review 8:Very little, if being picky I would say the red in the bathroom which was of a good size made it look dowdy. Also it would benefit from a shelf near the sink for a travellers bit and pieces.
Review 9:Excellent bed, shower and breakfast! Also if you ask at reception there is a really special restaurant behind the hotel about 5 mins walk..
Review 10:It was very clean and the proprietor was very friendly and helpful. It's a beautiful building and well maintained. The hotel is within a few footsteps of a tram platform or the main bus or you can ride your bike to the city center in 10 minutes. I would welcome the opportunity to stay again!
Review 11:Have stayed in several hotels in Ghent an this is by far the best. Staff friendly and room really spacious and comfortable. Convenient for tram route and railway station.
Review 12:The bedroom was very dark due at night as the only lights were on the walls and pointing downwards. Access is difficult with large suitcases as there are multiple staircases to get to some of the rooms; there is a small lift, but only for the main staircase.
Review 13:Free parking was very useful and convenient, and we were able to leave the car parked there after checking out (unlike another place we stayed further into the centre). It was only a short walk to both the student night-life area and the major art galleries. The bathroom was spacious with a wonderful shower (the kind with a large shower head and separate hand held head).
Review 14:Only downside is no parking on site, but then it's in the centre of the old town, so that's to be expected. There is an underground car park less than 5 minutes walk away and at €11 per 24 hrs it's not horrendously expensive.
Review 15:Great location, comfortable room with tasteful furnishings, very clean and quiet, friendly staff, nice breakfast.
Review 16:Only thing I did not like was the flooring
Review 17:The family who run this hotel are very nice , nothing is too bothersome for them. The location is a bit out but no problem , easily to access the historic centre by bus. Hotel is in a nice area close to train station
Review 18:Our host, Gerald, was extremely helpful and friendly. He takes a keen interest in his guests and works hard to ensure their stay in his charming hotels is enjoyable. The hotel reflects the Art Deco period perfectly and we would recommend the Hotel Orion to anyone wishing to visit Ghent. Thank you Gerald.
Review 19:Nice quite hotel, close to the town, you can rent the bicycle in the hotel and explore the city quicker! The staff very friendly and helpful with information.
Review 20:The only slight thing is that it is a way out from the historic centre for those that want it right on their doorstop but it won't be a problem to most.
Review 21:This is a really cool looking hotel with very spacious and spotless rooms and beautiful bathrooms. The staff were extremely helpful on arrival and gave us plenty of information about the city and how to get around inlcuding make notes on the free map they gave us. The terrace was a very pleasant place to have an summer's evening beer, which if ther staffed bar was closed could be got from the minibar in your room at a surprisingly reasonable. The area is quiet and fairly leafy with interesting Belgian residential architecture as you'd expect. It is a little way out from the historic city but the 20 minute or so walk is very pleasant and takes you through the big street market if you are there on a Saturday, or through the serene park and past museums. We didn;t have time to try the pool and sauna but we heard good things. All in all you will enjoy a very pleasant stay at a very good price.
Review 22:Al the lighting is minimal or not functioning > dark & somber room. Lot's of floor noise from room (?) above: like it is in your own room. bathroom: please remove empty/dirty soap dispensers.
Review 23:location - parking -
Review 24:Initially a bit of smell from the water pipes in the room. Pool is private, but needs to be rented. Reception only open till 20:00.
Review 25:Historic, remodeled building. Staff was quiet, but friendly when asked. Free parking, easy to drive into downtown Ghent. Good breakfast. B&B atmosphere.
Review 26:A bit far from centre but you will love the "millionaire" neighborhood and there are restaurants nearby and a tram stop.
Review 27:Such a wonderful place! We had 3 rooms (one in basement with kitchen) and all loved it. Amazing staff, great breakfast and lovely property. We enjoyed the cat and meeting owner's mother (and her dog) and loved sitting outside in the lovely front garden. Enjoyed it immensely.
Review 28:A little noisy, the doors bang when closed!!
Review 29:Friendly knowledgeable staff. Spacious, comfortable rooms in a lovely art deco building. Historic centre 30 mins walk, near to tram stop, taxi was only 8 Euros.
Review 30:Some mosquitos in the room, although I think this is a problem for the area. The hotel is quite a long walk from the historic centre, but I think this is reflected in the price, and we enjoyed the walk in.
Review 31:Pretty Art Deco style hotel on a nice road, the staff were very helpful and pleasant. The double bed was really comfortable, we all slept well, and the bathroom and shower were lovely! Parking was cheap and convenient.
Review 32:The pillows!!!! It felt like 10 cotton balls stuffed I to the pillowcase. If the pillows were upgraded this place would be that much better.
Review 33:Great place, really neat original pool downstairs. Helpful staff.
Review 34:The family room was a little rough around the edges although generally comfortable but I don't think it was worth the price stated. 100 euros would seem more appropriate. The house, though amazing is quite old and this means the floorboards and movements of the room above are very audible. Breakfast was a little pricey so we found a cafe nearby. The parking was our main reason for booking so we were not worried by the distance from the centre. We didn't have a poor experience at all, we just felt it didn't quite measure up to the price. So glad we came here though because Ghent was an amazing city.
Review 35:Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice quiet location and not too far from tram. Huge room. Free parking. A stunningly beautiful city.
Review 36:Nothing really, but it does take about 30 mins brisk walk to get into the historic centre. I believe there are convenient trams if you take the trouble to ask. 5 min walk to station so excellent for easy day trips to Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp etc.
Review 37:Free parking. Spacious rooms, house and grounds. Relaxed atmosphere. Close to train station.
Review 38:shower flooded as not cleaned out but rest of cleanliness was good and cleaner did rectify issue when I raised it
Review 39:Lovely building and large room, qood info and services. Easy parking.
Review 40:Hard to find any dislike. May be just our short stay there, but this was not the hotel's fault.
Review 41:Excellent service. Wonderfull stylish house with a lot of character. Do not forget to try the mirabelle marmelade. You should not miss the opportunity, it is must, actually! :-)
Review 42:Dreadful first night with mosquitos! Solved on second night with hotel supplied repellent machine plus dollops of spray to chase them away!
Review 43:Large bedroom, large bed, modern & large bathroom. Very quiet at night.
Review 44:nothing to mention in particular, though the hotel is situated in the suburbs and not close to many amenities. our problem was that we arrived on a Sunday and we found that a number of places were closed. Possibly not the best day to arrive in Ghent!
Review 45:liked style of building. bedroom fine, spacious bathroom. breakfast plentiful, though maybe a bit pricey.
Review 46:The Art Deco hotel sits in enclosed garden area that is safe for parking. The rooms have a lot of original features and are spacious comfortable. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to help the guests.
Review 47:It's not a City Centre hotel if you are looking to be in and out quite a lot but it's only a couple of Miles away. Transport is easy to get into the centre and the Hotel will provide tickets and advice.
Review 48:Parking and WiFi were the major factors for me booking this hotel and it was great for both and more. The Hotel has a small gym, exclusive swimming pool with sauna, there is a supermarket and Pizza Hut 5 minutes from the Hotel and the tram / bus links are virtually on the doorstep.
Review 49:We had specified that we will be there after a long trip from london and wanted if is possible to check in earlier . Instead of this , when we arrived at the hotel early morning 7 am , nobody was answering at the door or phone . We spent 20 min around the hotel to find somebody to let us in . This lady you have there opened the door finally without any sorry and told us that we can't check in early . She did her best in a false manner to play kind and polite with suggestions and advices , but nothing to make us feel comfortable after all the miles we did to get to the hotel .
Review 50:Quality and selection of breakfast items could be improved.
Review 51:We loved the location and the Art Deco style of the hotel. The manager, Gerald, could not have been more hospitable or charming - he made our stay really special!
Review 52:It wasn't a big deal, but the hotel is a little way from the centre. Personally we appreciated that as it was quiet and with Tram 1 from the station or Bus 5 from opposite the hotel it was easy. We like to walk and it was no more than 20 minutes.
Review 53:We really enjoyed the size of the rooms and the building itself was amazing. We never sampled the swimming pool so could not comment on that. The breakfast was fine and the comfort of the room was very good.
Review 54:We ran out of hot water for the shower, however the shower by the pool was available instead.
Review 55:Although some things didn't work, such as the kettle, the staff were very helpful and rectified everything immediately.
Review 56:My only complaint is that room to room noise can be an issue given the age of the place. Walls are not 100% soundproof and while my room was massive and very comfortable, I could hear conversations next door.
Review 57:A former mansion turned private orthopaedic clinic, Hotel Orion is nothing if not unique. You may arrive to find no one at the front desk; no matter, Gerald (mgr/owner) or one of his staff won't be far away. It's a very casual hotel, and feels more like a family run B&B, albeit a very large one with a fabulous breakfast, heaps of free parking and a small gym downstairs. The neighbourhood is great. A pleasant 30-40 minute walk to the historic centre of Gent, and 15 minutes to Gent St. Peter's Station.
Review 58:Alot of noise from upstairs however we did request a floor room so half expected it... Defo not put of though...
Review 59:Friendliness and made to feel welcome was outstanding... Room huge and very homely...
Review 60:The room was at -1 level, which made us feel a bit cramped. The kitchen needs reorganizing and be cleaner. There was a noise of a engine going all night and made us difficult to sleep.
Review 61:Gerald was very welcoming the apartment was ok. The bed was excellent and location good and quiet. Parking was a present at the end. Overall good with room for imrovements.
Review 62:Very thin pillows. Breakfast overpriced. Why are the toilets mounted so high that even a tall persons feet do not touch the ground, uncomfortable & weird!
Review 63:Reasonable location for our purpose and very helpful staff.
Review 64:If you want to walk to the center of Ghent, you have to walk 30 minutes.
Review 65:Nice to have acess to a pool and a sauna - even though the pool is a small one. The family room is very big!
Review 66:Nothing. If you don't like Art Deco this may not be the place for you.
Review 67:Staff were friendly and helpful and obviously knew how to get the most out of a trip to the area. Breakfast available until quite late - appreciated after a long trip.
Review 68:-The kettle for tea was a bit off, it smelt like burnt plastic. But this might have been our mistake, as it was completely empty once and someone might have accidentally put it on without water. In the end everything we made in it tasted like plastic. -Do take the breakfast option if you are staying on a Sunday morning, almost everything is closed then.
Review 69:-Loved the personnel, really went out of their way to help us. -Room was lovely, beautifully decorated. -Shower was amazing -Tea, coffee and croissants in the waiting area. -The bed was amazing, so big. -The added folded out beds, we got mixed reviews on from those who slept on it.
Review 70:heavy noise from footsteps in room above us....a carpet on the floor would help
Review 71:the bed was perfect, the room was spacious and a pleasure to spend time in with our extended family; staff was wonderful and the free coffee was also great; the Millionaires Quarter offers lots of interesting architecture
Review 72:Cleanliness of the room and comfort of the bed could be improved. Interior a bit outdated. I'd say with a little remodelling the grandeur of this magnificent villa would be restored.
Review 73:Right in the millionaire's patch of Ghent and very close to the University Hospital lies this very classy hotel with excellent staff and good breakfast.
Review 74:Make sure you read the suggestion to put 124 in the Satnav...the 181 address causes confusion as it is nowhere near 180!
Review 75:Excellent service by owner Gerald Great views from comfortable, spacious bedroom Effortless parking Relaxed, abundant breakfast Excellent Trappist beers from bar
Review 76:The surrounding area was beautiful. Maybe a bit far out from centre of ghent, but buses were handy.
Review 77:Staff were very friendly. Room was plenty big enough for 4. Heated pool plus gym facilities were an added bonus.
Review 78:Difficult to find when using sat nav. If you are driving in it may be worth printing off a map of the location beforehand.
Review 79:Second time that we have stayed at this hotel - this time for the Ghent cycle racing. The hotel rooms are spacious and the location, on the edge of the centre is ideal for those with bicycles. There are also team stops nearby.
Review 80:No carpet or rugs in bedroom. Not many restaurants in area.
Review 81:Friendly staff. On-site parking. Easy walking distance to station and velodrome. Tram stop a few hundred metres away. Lovely area of Ghent.
Review 82:Clean, but could be better. Staff not always prompt.
Review 83:The bed was amazing. It was like being in an old, cozy residence in the country side, owned by your old aunt.
Review 84:Located in delightful neighbourhood . Easy to find with clean , large rooms and a very helpful owner . Excellent value and would happily stay here again .
Review 85:The staff were very welcoming and carried our bags up to the room. The room was nice and clean with a good sized bathroom. I even left something behind which the gentleman on reception later called me about and arranged postage of. Would go to again if back in Ghent.
Review 86:Can hear people in other rooms conversations. More pillows in each rooms would be nice.
Review 87:Distance to train station/tram/bus stops is good. Decor is nice. Size of room was fine. Shower was huge. Wifi signal great. Manager very nice.
Review 88:The kitchen was poorly equipped and had no sharp knives. The cupboard the crockery is in was musty so that it all smelled and had to be washed before use. The oven was dirty. The sponge provided for washing up was also dirty.
Review 89:Beds very comfortable and clean. Room was big and quiet and well equipped and there was no noise from other rooms. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 90:Everything was perfect.
Review 91:We were greeted by Gerald the owner, who was very helpful and friendly and of course spoke perfect English. We were shown to our luxurious bedroom. Free internet was instantly provided. Car Park was so convenient and safe. Breakfast was excellent and at a reasonable price. We would always return to this hotel without any hesitation. Thank you. Sandy and Peter jones
Review 92:Shortly before arriving at the hotel, it occurred to me that I mistakenly reserved the apartment for one night instead of two. Upon arrival the owner politely informed me that the room was already reserved. He went out of his way to find me a room in town (which was difficult b/c my party was comprised of three adults and one 2 yo). He spent about an hour calling around and surfing the net to find us a place for the second night. I'm quite certain I've never experienced that level of service and I'm truly grateful. Layout of the apartment was great and allowed for privacy Breakfast was generous
Review 93:Not in town, but easy bus or tram ride in Pets are allowed and there were a lot of dogs there so few dog odours and some barking Room was a superior, but quite standard
Review 94:The clerk was excellent and incredibly helpful Nice swimming pool and sauna Decent Breakfast Great shower Parking on site Excellent value for money
Review 95:We drive to main attractions which worked out fine but some might want to be closer to old city center.
Review 96:Large room divided by pocket doors. Nice small pool. Charming apartment
Review 97:The management was superb. The art deco surroundings a pleasure. It was clean, quiet and accommodated my wheelchair needs. Gerald took excellent care of my 4 companions and me. Seek this place out if you are staying in Ghent! You won't be sorry!
Review 98:Ignorance of female staff in the morning; dust; student-style renovations; almost non-working drainage in the shower
Review 99:Kindness of male staff; quiet room and area (near to university hospital)
Review 100:Loved this hotel! Offered old world charm with a modern facility! The owner was most kind and accommodating! I would return .."try it and you won't be disappointed!!!
Review 101:A very relaxing place to stay after touring city area, so nice not to have shops and so many people around you. so convenient to get to city center or walk to train station. had a delicious meal at Thai restaurant, Papaya Song, just a couple of blocks away from hotel. we stayed there 4 nights and had a great experience.Gerald was very helpful in orienting us to the area.
Review 102:The room was a bit hot, and when the window was opened for air 2 mozzies flew in, so we had to sleep with the window shut; we ended up taking out the duvet and just sleeping under the quilt cover
Review 103:Very helpful and friendly staff, good continental breakfast with plenty of fresh options, so that we didn't have to stop for lunch. Area felt very safe when walking back late. Excellent restaurant round the the corner - The Montmartre
Review 104:Well positioned for getting into the old part of town, tram near, very clean and stylish; we were given a very warm welcome, so have booked another overnight stay on our way back to UK later
Review 105:We appreciated the beautiful large room, the recommendations of the staff and even the breakfast buffet was very nice. The staff had bus tickets available for sale and made recommendations for us to see Ghent which turned out to be very easy to follow so we were able to enjoy our day. So grateful!
Review 106:Quite a long (but pleasant) walk into the city
Review 107:Lovely art deco building and fittings Really helpful staff Great private-use pool Good breakfast Gigantic family room, with room didvider
Review 108:If being picky, personal preference for carpeted floors rather than rather creaky bare wood. If style is an issue to you, may not suit. Decor could do with sprucing up - probably will be, as relatively recently made into a hotel. No room phone.
Review 109:Personal attention, spacious room, good location, being on a good wide road and convenient for transport (trams and buses), car parking on large forecourt. Not perfect (where is ?) but overall a good solid package for the price and keen, helpful management.
Review 110:we chose the family room which was absolutely massive. There were four of us in the room and still masses of space. Beautiful decor, comfy beds and lovely bathroom. Excellent staff who gave lots of local advice about places to eat and see.
Review 111:Sauna was extra and not turned on ready for our booking.
Review 112:Great manager who dealt with a double booking efficiently and satisfactorily although in the end managed to sort us a room which was quite different to the usual chain hotels.
Review 113:Nothing.
Review 114:We stayed in the 4 bed apartment which was very comfortable for a family with 1 young child and a teenager. The staff were great very friendly and willing to help. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 115:Nothing! Not central to Ghent, but a nice walk in, solves parking issues, and anyone interested in architecture will enjoy wandering near the hotel.
Review 116:Superior room was exactly that! Great style for that price. Gerard and family seemed genuinely pleased to have us in their hotel/city.
Review 117:We were warmly geeted and made to feel welcome, with lots of helpful advice given. Even when I asled for some help with some Dutch words and phrases, these were given with a smile ( and patience :-) ) The room was spacious. The private pool use was excellent value for money and very good with wave machine, jacuzzi and sauna. It is only a fairly short walk to the city centre.
Review 118:Breakfast was rather expensive so we went without.
Review 119:We had very helpful instructions of how to find and catch the bus into Gent which was only 2 Euros each way. We saved a lot by staying outside the city so well worth it. Modern cool style inside too.
Review 120:The staff is very nice, attentive and helpful. The hotel itself is abit on the outskirts but thus very calm and the city centre is easy to reach by bus and within a 20 minutes walking distance. If you have time use the swimming pool and sauna area!!
Review 121:Large family room. Pool and sauna.
Review 122:Very convenient stay as we spent the day in Brussels, slept in Ghent, and the next day travelled 30 minutes to Bruges. In the evening we enjoyed the pool and sauna. It was a treat! The family room was very large, and fit the 2 adults and 3 children very comfortably! I would recommend this hotel.
Review 123:A lovely welcome from Gerald with great tips and a map showing where to go. Our room was amazing. The location, whilst a tram ride from town was really fascinating because of the variety of architecture, so it was a lovely walk. The hotel had a really relaxed feel, which we enjoyed. Would definitely like to stay here again and explore the area a bit more.
Review 124:Friendliness of the staff,so helpful. We arrived very late as had been delayed on our journey but nothing was too much trouble. We were catching an early ferry & so had to leave without breakfast but the smells from the kitchen were very tempting. We would stay there again if in the area as we didn't really get much chance to see it.
Review 125:Everything! The owners and staff are very welcoming and helpful people. We went there during the Gentse Feesten and there were lots of public transport options to get to the very heart of Ghent. Next time we hope to be able to have more time to enjoy the pool.
Review 126:Although the hotel had been renovated in the last few years there were areas which looked tired already.
Review 127:It really was a very interesting and comfortable room. Good breakfast, but did miss bread on a couple of mornings. Otherwise well stocked breakfast table.
Review 128:Nice and peaceful area. Outside the centre, whit a short walking distane from the train station and easy access to the centre by bus. The room was spacious and comfortable, with tea/coffee facilities. Very friendly owners. Very recommendable. Lloc maco i tranquil, i els propietaris, molt bona gent. Molt bona relació qualitat/preu.
