Reviews for University Square Hotel
Review 1:I don't like how they have the hardwood floors in the hallways now. You can hear every little thing in the halls
Review 2:Front desk staff was very accommodating to needs. Very pleasant and friendly. Rooms are very spacious and clean.
Review 3:Glacierly Slow draining sink, 1st room was not clean, we had to change rooms. The next one was much better. The breakfast needs some improving . Also we had trouble with the room key
Review 4:The bed was comfortable . Good thermostat . Nice girl at the counter.
Review 5:The building and the room felt cold, drab and neglected. The lamps look really old and are falling apart. I had to unscrew the bulb or unplug the cord to turn off. I asked for a quiet room and got one facing Shaw. Had a diesel truck idling outside my window from 4:00-6:00 am. It wasn't too pleasant.
Review 6:The lobby was ok, which gave me hope for the room. But then...
Review 7:The shower did not get hot, just barely lukewarm and the breakfast buffet was of low quality, especially the coffee. However, we were glad there was breakfast included, which allowed us to leave for our final destination sooner without making an extra stop.
Review 8:The place was clean and spacious, breakfast was included. It was easy to find on our way to Yosemite.
Review 9:The front desk was unattended both times I came in, perhaps because it's understaffed. I didn't like the fact we have to leave a $100 deposit unlike other motels I've stayed at. Not something you want to do when traveling on a budget.
Review 10:The room we received was large, tidy, and equipped with mini fridge and modern television. We stayed here New Years Eve and it was pretty quiet. Free parking behind a gated fence. They offer a continental breakfast of some sort which I woke up too late for. Housekeeping came around and was respectful of our privacy. I think my favorite part is that it's located right next to 7 Eleven.
Review 11:Hotel charges a 100 dollar incidentals deposit that is never explicitly mentioned on booking.com. the property and rooms are very dated and the bed is only just acceptable for a comfortable sleep. The night we were there security had caught people trying to break in to cars on our side of the property...our truck was aggressively haulted at the gate but eventually allowed to pass through. Shower was cold for the first 5-10 minutes but eventually warmed up. Elevator was old and bumpy with an expired permit. Sketchy crowd. Staff wasn't particularly friendly at all.
Review 12:Room was very large. Our room had a huge window and a flat screen TV with great channel selection. Coffee maker and microwave. Breakfast from 6-9am. Bathroom was clean and spacious. The lobby and bar area were beautiful although we were a little bit disappointed that such a good looking alcohol bar was permanently closed. Very close to Fresno State and several nice restaurants. We've paid more for rooms and motels that weren't nearly as good of a value.
Review 13:stains on the sheets and bedspreads, only about 3 of the electrical outlets functioned properly, broken fixtures throughout, trash cans had bags that were way too small and inside bottom of cans were filthy and stained, carpet looked as though it had not been vacuumed in a while and was very dirty.
Review 14:great price and location.
Review 15:Had a family emergency and checked out late afternoon on the second day. Person at the desk showed no concern
Review 16:Great price for the two nights. Wish I could have enjoyed the second night.
Review 17:Terrible place. Shady characters smoking pot in the hallway. Unsafe location with bar fences all over. Bad smell in hallway and room. Really old furniture and stained carpets. People running around and knocking doors at 3AM in the morning. Staff totally unfriendly. We came for breakfast 9AM and there was no food left. The clerk said that no more food was coming out and when I complained he couldn't care less.
Review 18:Nothing
Review 19:A big pee stain ontop of comfoter on one of the beds and little black hairs on the bed I was sitting on . The second room the bathtub was clogged with toilet paper when I went to use the shower
Review 20:Outdated everything! Charged us a $100 for incidentals deposit! Shady people hanging around property. Air /heat was running but wouldn't come on in the first room, they moved us to another room quickly, just inconvenient to pack up again and go back to lobby and then unpack again. Moved to new room and there was leftover food in fridge. Def. glad I only booked one night here! It also looks like this might be used as weekly rentals for locals. Parking lot filled with California cars in pretty rough shape. Men hanging around in groups by pool and doorways smoking and being very loud.
Review 21:Rooms were large
Review 22:The room wasn't dirty but it wasn't clean still had some shavings and toothpaste in the sink from previous guests.
Review 23:The rooms were big and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful
Review 24:The facility is very run down, and needs to be updated. They didn't have all the items for breakfast that they showed in there gallery. No waffle iron, no waffles. No peanut butter. It took about 10 tries with the card to get the door opened, and that's if you hold your mouth just right.
Review 25:The location was good.
Review 26:ItIt is a very clean and also very close to the restaurants very friendly staff and excellent breakfast :) and when you return that is where I will stay...
Review 27:I didn't like how no one told me I had to pay extra 100 n the lady in front was rude n gave us keys that didn't work so we had to walk all the way back to front desk. I still haven't got my 100$ back.
Review 28:I liked the price.
Review 29:The heat was broken so it was cold. They had to send someone to fix it but I was checking out that day. Lesson learned, check ac/heat before unpacking. Also, floor felt sticky. Towels are hard. Found a red stain on the blanket.
Review 30:The beds are comfortable. Location is good too. Breakfast is a hot breakfast.
Review 31:I used a third party to book my stay, and because their computers seemed outdated, the computer messed up on how many nights I was actually staying there, but the employees fixed the mistake, and all was well.
Review 32:Overall the hotel was a great last minute choice for a last minute trip. Another plus was the surrounding restaurants and convenience stores. The beds were very comfortable, and the room had everything I needed.
Review 33:That I couldn't stay longer!
Review 34:The hotel was immaculate, rooms nicely done and the price for what you get was unbelievable! I'd recommend to anyone!!!! Other hotels could learn a thing or two from this place! Oh and the best part, they have a hot free breakfast in the morning!!!
Review 35:The floor in our room was super dirty. Poor breakfast in the morning which they keep 'warm' with a towel over the lid where there is a whole to grab the food. Not hygianic at all!
Review 36:Nice big beds
Review 37:The entire experience was tainted by the pathetic breakfast offered. The hotel would do better to not offer breakfast at all than to serve up such cheap-rate fare. Plastic cutlery that breaks on use, paper plates, synthetic juice, re-constituted egg - it is as if they had deliberately set out to create the worst dining experience posible. Come for the room, don't stay for the breakfast
Review 38:The room size was generous with a small patio area opening onto the swimming pool, but we did not have time to take advantage as we spent our spare moments at the huge Fashion Mall a mile or so down the road (and thereafter at the Old Spaghetti House opposite the hotel)
Review 39:Lets begin with a room that was dirty. Smoke detector missing, carpet stained, towels like sandpaper and parking scary. We reserved a King bed in a non-smoking room on the ground floor. We got two Queens non-smoking on the second floor.
Review 40:We were in town for a family funeral. We were in a location that was central to what we needed to do. The traffic was dreadful. Actually, the best thing about being there was leaving.
Review 41:A lot of suspicious criminal-looking people wandering around the territory. Not very clean. Everything is pretty old here: the furniture, the carpet, coffee maker.
Review 42:This hotel is great. Super quiet and cozy. The rooms are huge, super confortable with all the ammenities necessary. It's in a great location. The breakfast is very good in a well decorated room. The parking was very safe compared to previous hotel's I've been. Basically I would say this hotel is perfect. I would trully recoomend staying over for a couple of days. The town is very cool as well.
Review 43:You get what you pay for. There's nothing really wrong with the place. Okay neighborhood, stuff works, you get an okay number of channels. But nothing's really great. Also, every hallway is under card key lock. It's nice if you like the extra security, but if you're disable and carrying a baby around like me, it can be a little extra nuisance.
Review 44:I stayed here to see a Fresno St football game and the location couldn't be better. It's easy walking distance to the stadium. Also, the prices are competitive even with some of the cheaper motels in the area.
Review 45:The breakfast was ridiculous. The eggs (cold) were powdered or some kind of mix. The sausage (cold) was undercooked and the potatoes (cold) were French fries. Also the coffee was pretty bad.
Review 46:Room was clean and relatively quiet although there was some (machine?) that turned off an on several times during the night.
Review 47:Musty smell, seems like a high crime area, staff sat out in the courtyard talking loudly the whole night. "Breakfast" was reconstituted dried eggs, a big greasy pile of limp French fries and greasy looking sausage.
Review 48:located close to CSUF
Review 49:Too many transient type people hanging around the property. Elevator not working. Seemed like a homelss shelter hotel?
Review 50:No way is this a 3 star property.
Review 51:Air conditioner did not work. Moved to another room. Unable to change temp. Too cold at night. Facility clean but hotel should be updated.
Review 52:Central location
Review 53:The breakfast was not very good. They did have some hot options like scrambled eggs, french fries and sausage. But it just wasn't very good.
Review 54:The room was very large, quiet, and the beds were very comfortable. One nice feature was there were two sinks. One in the room and one in the bathroom. There is a nice swimming pool and jacuzzi hot tub. You are not too far from Fresno attractions, such as they are. All in all this is a very good place to stay if you have to be in Fresno.
Review 55:Incredibly rude staff, patronising and moody. Warning: breakfast was terrible! -I'd rather not have it included and pay for a meal somewhere else.
Review 56:Nice big room, clean and comfortable.
Review 57:The room was very outdated and the towels smelled rancid. I didn't notice the horrible smell on ALL the towels until I got out of the shower. I had to use my own clothes to dry off.
Review 58:The rate was good
Review 59:light bulb missing from one lamp in room; Hallway door to my section of hotel was nrver latched tightly= door never closed behind me on it's own.
Review 60:perfect location for what I needed
Review 61:We arrived late at the hotel and the staff was not very kind.
Review 62:We only spent one night in Fresno, in our way to San Francisco. It was a nice place but we did not visit much of the city.
Review 63:The lady was very rude at the front. The room smelled like a wet rag. The carpet was filthy. Very noisy from the gate opening and closing all night. We kept hearing loud bangs all night.
Review 64:The bed was very comfortable
Review 65:The internet was out for two days. I had to sit in the parking lot of the steakhouse next door to get a wifi signal.
Review 66:Location was good. Price was fair.
Review 67:This place is horrible. The rooms are dingy, the building feels institutional and there were multiple shady druggy like people hanging around just outside the doors to building smoking and drinking. "Free" breakfast is powdered scrambled egg product, sausage made from who knows what and toasted bagel or bread. Horrible.
Review 68:Close to freeway and local restaurants
Review 69:The older man that checked us in was very blunt and unhelpful. I want tocall him rude, but it was much more how he said things rather than whathe said. There was an error with our booking. My fiancé was the'additional guest', so the cranky old man would not let me checkinto the room. My name was on the reservation. I had the emailconfirmation visible for him on my telephone, but he insisted that myfiancé had to physically come in with identification in order for us tocheck in. He glanced at my fiancé's drivers license for less than 2seconds, then accepted my credit card without another word. There wasjust nothing hospitable about his hospitality!!
Review 70:Very clean, large room!! The bed was soft and comfy, which I like. Islept well!! My fiancé prefers harder beds, so he didn't appreciatethe bed as much as I did. Our room was quite large with a nice sittingarea. It was big enough for 10 friends to relax with birthday cake and afew drinks, before heading out for a night of dancing!! Included isbreakfast for each guest. We opted for sleep, rather than breakfastbefore 9 am. So, I can't fairly comment on the breakfast. I will saythat I feel breakfast should be served a bit later on weekend!!!
Review 71:Breakfast was poor in quality, served in a cramped area, so it was hard to find a table. Also, areas of the hotel looked a bit shabby.
Review 72:The location was great, the rooms were spacious and the bed very comfortable. It was reasonable value for the rate we paid. Most staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 73:I have stayed here once came back a month later I Booked my room through Bookings.com I go to check in they required a deposit which I wasn't charged before they asked for a deposit of 150.00 dollars told me that it will not be back on my card for up to a week and found kinda odd especially me not being a smoker or drug user I recall having 2 children with me and a teenager with me at my first stay no deposit then so I go to San Joaquin suites on Shaw and west way much Better like your own apartment with patios for almost the same price !!!!!
Review 74:It's a older Hotel But for what the money's worth a continental Breakfast spacious room very clean and comfortable beds and fairly quiet I think it's a fairly good place to sleep.
Review 75:Noise level .. new laminite flooring looked nice; however you heard everystep anyone made going down the hall. The mattress felt good initially; however getting out of it in the morning was difficult.
Review 76:Location
Review 77:Breakfast was included, but the eggs were of the powdered variety and there weren't many healthy options.
Review 78:Staff was friendly and location was convenient for the college and downtown Fresno.
Review 79:I didnt like that i didnt feel safe with all the locks in the facility, (i feel like if something bad were to happen, i might die trying to open the gate or door) The carpet is dirty, the food is disgusting. And theres a guy loitering around the premises looking for trouble.
Review 80:I liked that its an old style hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful. Bed is comfy. Not a perfect place to stay in but i can deffinitely give it another chance if they will change the Carpet.
Review 81:They were slow at registration desk, and in the beginning they were not sure they had our reservation although I had a copy of the confirmation by email Breakfast was OK but not the best
Review 82:Location is great close to University, room was efficiently equipped with everything the traveler need Cleanliness in the room was good
Review 83:This was a little thing, but they didn't have enough seating and the spare overflow room wasn't opened. Once the counter new the situation they responded quickly.
Review 84:Nice area to stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was a good.
Review 85:Did not like the location. Next to a 7-11 where random people were hanging around at 11pm at night and could hear screaming. A/C did not work well and temperature was in the 90's. It looks like it may be half motel/place where peoe live?
Review 86:The ice machine wasn't working and being that it was 108 when we were there, that was a big inconvenience. I also hoped that there was more than 1 washer and dryer. We were there when the firefighters were there and they had just finished a 24 hr shift and had to wait to wash their uniforms.
Review 87:The ice machine hardly worked the 4 days we were there. Since being there for that many days it would have been nice to have more than 1 wash machine. Several people were waiting for hours to use it. A different breakfast offering would have been nice
Review 88:Price was great and clean rooms!
Review 89:- bad neighborhood - our door was already broken up, it was not possible to lock it properly - the hole facility and the interieur of the room reminded me of the movie shining - Breakfast only till 9 am
Review 90:- spacious room
Review 91:Wi-fi was marginal and slow. We had no pressing need but had that been the case we would have found this limiting or a fail case.
Review 92:This motel is aging and not entirely gracefully. Its faded glory shows in the fake 'library' environment of the reception and dining area, and in the well-worn and well-trafficked corridors and rooms. It was minimally comfortable, not a super value.
Review 93:The hotel was old and outdated. Walking down the hallway to your room felt like you were going through the floor. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I'd ever been in in a hotel. It said it was a pillow top...it was not. The towels were thin and hard. The tub was cracked and peeling, plus it wasn't clean. The wi-fi was spotty. The room had a receipt in there from a previous guest. Definitely shows the room wasn't thoroughly cleaned prior to booking it again. The air was very musty. The breakfast was horrible. There was some form of orangeade instead of orange juice...some form of red liquid that I still don't know what it was supposed to be. There wasn't enough food for the people. The food was cold with only a napkin to keep the heat inside. It was nothing like the picture online. The people at the front desk were overwhelmed which made them snap at guests that had nothing to do with why they were upset. It was the worse experience I've ever had in an American hotel.
Review 94:The refrigerator was cold and there was plenty of ice.
Review 95:The parking lot was dark, felt unsafe. Felt uncomfortable parking my car in a dim lite parking lot.
Review 96:Size of the room, the beds and pillows were very comfortable.
Review 97:Air conditioner was not functioning properly. We arrived late & unfortunately advised front desk too late. We did not change rooms because only a smoking room was available. Spent a very uncomfortable night.
Review 98:Room was clean, bed and pillows comfortable. Convenient location.
Review 99:It took an hour to find a room with air conditioning that worked to just a cool level. "juice" at breakfast was just like a koolaid punch. Toilet shrilly screeched with every flush. Exercise room was padlocked closed. Could not get a wi-fi connection. It just locked up.
Review 100:Excellent breakfast as long as you use the microwave to heat up the eggs, sausage and potatoes. Bed was very comfortable and soft pillows.
Review 101:AC was not working properly. Technician came out to replace filter. The filter that was pulled was overly filled with black thick dirt. Free hot breakfast was horrifying and unappealing. Eggs seemed made from box.
Review 102:Old smell permeates the hallways and ballroom. Needs serious renovation. Don't really even think it's worth the $109 we paid for the night.
Review 103:Clean but shabby looking.
Review 104:The room was a little warm at first but it cooled down at night.
Review 105:I enjoyed the staff! They were very nice and helpful. The rooms were clean. The bathrooms were clean and had spacious bath/shower. The pool area was very nice. The hotel had an Antique feel to it which I enjoyed. We had the option of sitting outside to eat breakfast. Gated parking lot. Everything is close by such as food, gas stations, and freeway.
Review 106:The doors slam when they close too loud, couldn't sleep well with that noise. The breakfast was a complete disapointment. Flies sitting on the bread.
Review 107:It's a good location, the beds are comfortable, the rooms were clean.
Review 108:The door leading to our room was not secure.. We felt very uncomfortable about the fact that anyone without a key could walk right in.
Review 109:Slept well and breakfast was okay.
Review 110:It was sold as an Extended Stay -but wasn't. It was sold several years ago. The decor is outdated - 70's style. Ice machines didnt work.
Review 111:Location and rooms were big.
Review 112:They ran out of eggs in the middle of breakfast and didn't replace them within the next 15 min I was there.
Review 113:It was nice enough for the price. Nice lobby and pool. Gated parking and entrance.
Review 114:The staff was rude and incompetent; the toilet was not properly installed; the bed was old and smelly; the carpet eas beyond filthy; breakfas was a joke.
Review 115:The hot tub did not work. The check in is not until 3pm with "no exceptions" written on a paper taped to the front desk. This means that if you are from out of town and you just arrived to Fresno and would like to check in and leave your bags, you have to wait until 3pm. We should be able to at least check in, leave our bags with the concierge/front desk, and return after 3pm to use our room. No one acknowledged us, as we stood at the front desk for over 5 minutes. Not even a "hello, may I help you?"
Review 116:The pool area is a nice and secluded from the street.
Review 117:Nothing to comment on.
Review 118:The value, comfort, location and price. Staff was very helpful and courteous. The room was very nice and beds were very comfortable. The shower was fantastic. I slept very well during my 2 day stay. I usually only do surveys if the product or service is either really wonderful or really terrible. My experience at the University Square hotel was Fantastic Thank You for a Pleasant stay.
Review 119:This hotel appears at first glance to be outdated, un-kept, dark, and dirty. I was immediately uncomfortable. My impressions went downhill from that bad start. Inside the room, a light fixture and the chair leg were broken in the room, and the wi-fi wouldn't work. I was supposed to stay two nights, and only stayed the first because I was past the point of free cancellation (although it still crossed my mind) . I found another hotel for the second night. Honestly, it was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, and was a reminder of the important balance between price and safety/comfort.
Review 120:Breakfast was a joke...they were not prepared or equipped to feed every guest. Jacuzzi was awful and the rooms were filthy as we're the carpets in the rooms. The transitioning male to female clerk literally skipped around the place and forgot our request on several occasions. Broken shower head pulled away from the wall it just looked like they opened the abandon place as a last chance to make money. Very disappointed by Booking.com to refer this place.
Review 121:Had to call office twice asked for security to say something but werealized he was on floor ignore problem. We had kids knocking on ourroom door from 11p.M.-1a.M.screaming kids loud mouth adults. It wasthe worst Hotel stay I've ever had!!! Never stay at the UniversitySquare Hotel or Book with Booking.com description is not what theyshow you!!!!!
Review 122:Pillows
Review 123:Everything else. There was a definite lack of hospitality at this hotel. From the cold looks of the staff to the inability to get any kind of room service ( due to the phone not working ) to having to virtually go to the front desk for everything from towels to bell carts.
Review 124:It's closeness to the university.
Review 125:The overwhelming smell of bleach when we walked into the room it came from the bathroom. At least it was clean.
Review 126:I liked the large spacious room and the affordable price.
Review 127:Breakfast left a lot to be desired. The flow of the setup was very bad when more than two people were trying to get food. Also, not able to keep up with demand.
Review 128:Location and comfort of bed. Spacious room. Just what was needed for an overnight business trip.
Review 129:I think it is in the process of being 'up dated'. At this pace will be in the next decade. Use of grocery shopping carts for linens.
Review 130:Was clean
Review 131:transfer to another room, security door not working. Second room Air conditioner not working. Transfer to 3rd room women's hair stuck to wall of shower. Facial shavings floating in sink.
Review 132:The room was recently renovated, but thus was let down by some things (like the bathroom fittings) that were showing their age. The beds were not all that comfortable.
Review 133:The hotel is in reasonable quite location en easily accessible. It has a nice lobby, and kind staff
Review 134:The beds were okay, sheets and pillowcases did not appear too clean, the bathroom was dirty, sink, toilet, carpet was in need of a good cleaning.
Review 135:The location for breakfast, lunch, dinner was great.
Review 136:The staff originally couldn't find my booking.com confirmation and wanted to charge me almost double. Then we had to cancel 1 night because my daughter's softball tournament was cancelled due to rain, so they charged us for half a day even though we checked out at 10 a.m.! Then I come home to see my bank statement and they are charging me the full price plus an extra $166! Horrible, I will never stay here again, I would rather sleep in my car!
Review 137:The hotel needs a facelift. It is a well used facility. Breakfast was so so. It was cold when I got there at 8:15AM. Halls are loud because of wooden floors. There isn't much insulation between the walls, so you can hear people talking and doing all sorts of things.
Review 138:The facility was clean and well kept. The rooms were large and spacious and well decorated.
