Reviews for The Local Hostel NYC
Review 1:However, hostal located in quiet community and near to industrial area or factories and there are some graffiti. it doesn't make you feel safe at night, especially for a girl.
Review 2:It has good location where near to manhattan with reasonable price if you travel alone. It is clean and staffs are nice. comfortable bed and it would be better if it has curtain for private purpose
Review 3:Very small room; bathroom setting a bit inconvenient. The upside is that you do have bathroom in the room, which a lot of hostels don't have. Though Long Island City is an up-and-coming area in NYC, the neighborhood feels a bit desolate due to a lack of night life or restaurants. If you'd like your hostel to be surrounded by bars and pubs, this is not the type of place for you.
Review 4:Converted from an old factory and warehouse typical of its location (Long Island City). The lobby has very high ceilings and you can still see some of the original pipelines, which give it a post-industrial type of cool feel. Nice kitchen and free drink on the first night.
Review 5:The location of the hostel is great! So close to a few different stations giving speedy access to Manhattan. Great wifi access all over the building, even up the rooftop!
Review 6:The location was pretty great! One stop away from Manhattan - Upper East Side! On the route of E train - which is the one you take from JFK to Manhattan, anyway :) The ambience is perfect, they even have their own bar! Staff is very helpful with everything. Daily housekeeping. 2 min. from local E & M trains. Great rooftop! %100 recommended!
Review 7:Would be nice if you change towels or bed sheets on a regular basis, say for 3 days or so :)
Review 8:Although in Queens, Court Sq Station has good connections and there was a supermarket just outside the station so it was easy for me to get some food or drinks. Staffs were friendly, great atmosphere. I'd definitely stay at the Local when I'm back in town.
Review 9:It's the third time I have been to the Local and I have never been disappointed: it'a clean, the staff is very nice and helpful, it's one subway station away from Manhattan, they organize events every nice -live music, stand up comedy show, movie night... I really love the Local!
Review 10:Nothing really bad to say about this place. We just have to be aware that there is no elevator, no shampoo/conditioner, and the streets may be confusing at night because there are many streets with similar names next to each other (44 Dr, 44 St, 44 Ave, 44...?!)
Review 11:The rooms were bright and the ceilings were high. The room felt clean everyday. The wi-fi was fast. Board games!!
Review 12:The windows probably need to be more insulated in winter. Sleeping next to the window it got really cold.
Review 13:Great feel. Spacious rooms and great staff.
Review 14:Location was alright, really easy to get the train but there's not much happening in the area, bit boring. Everything else was great.
Review 15:Very clean, easy access to the train which was only 3 stops away from middle of Manhattan and good vibe about the hostel. Very social and comfortable, cool layout and style, would recommend.
Review 16:I expected a lot more from this hostel... first, we had a private room, and it was COLD. We reported this to the person in the reception desk. There was a heater, but turning it on meant that we could not sleep, because it is SO noisy, it´s impossible to sleep!! believe me! (and also, to turn it on or off, you have to stand on the bed and point to the heater with the remote, and with your arm as high as you can reach) but anyways, it made the room a bit less cold, but I wouldn´t say it did much. Then, from the wall that faces the street, cold comes through the window!!!, so I woke up in the middle of the night, like every hour, because it was like sleeping on the street, you can even feel the wind comming through in your face. Also, the towers were dirty, from day 1, and they were not changed at all during our stay. They had black and brown spots all over... the paper on the door said that daily they would come to clean the room... but we didn´t really see anything of that. We were a bit disapointed... :(
Review 17:The location - close to the subway.
Review 18:The shower head in the bathroom was quite high, so it was difficult to wash some of the lower parts of my body.
Review 19:Friendly staff, especially Hannah behind the bar! The location is also great; depending where your room is, you can get a view of Manhattan and the subway station is so close.
Review 20:Some travellers can be noisy when they come back late to the hostel, but its not much you can do about that.
Review 21:The hostel is only 3 minutes walk from the subway and the subway is only one stop away from manhattan! it's very easy to get to. Safe area too. This was my second time at the local.
Review 22:Not enough chairs in the lobby - difficult to find a seat to eat my dinner at a table.
Review 23:The location is perfect - close to more subway stations, the room was big, clean, you have your own socket and light by your bed, big lockers available. Very good wi-fi and air conditioning.
Review 24:Don't expect an European standard hostel. Cheap wobbly beds, small kitchen (e.g. couple of wallplug heaters for a stove), tiny & unequipped showers.
Review 25:The surrounds aren't that interesting, but access to Manhattan or Brooklyn is easy and fast. Nice bar/cafe.
Review 26:Some of the housekeepers were extremely rude & had an extremely poor attitude.
Review 27:LOVE this hostel! Came back and stayed here 3 times, couldn't recommend it enough!
Review 28:The kitchen a tad small and a bit dirty most of the time.
Review 29:I truly felt like home here. All the services and facilities are very simple, but, hey, it's a hostel and considering how cheap my 8 nights' stay was, it was a great value for money. I was concerned about how I would handle the lack of privacy, since it's the first time I stayed in a dormitory with strangers, but this experience has exceeded all my expectations. Not only was it ok to share the room with other 3 people, but I also met some nice friends to hang out and explore NY with. Hotel had good shared facilities where you could use your computer, have a drink and sit on the sofa and socialise. They even showed movies a couple of times!:) Will definitely stay here again. The location was great, close to Manhattan, with a great view of skyscrapers.
Review 30:Some draws/ small wardrobe to hang stuff. Could have done with a towelling shower mat to stop soaking the floor
Review 31:Everything . Everyone was so helpful. It was so near to the tube excellent for getting about. Brill double room with private bathroom.
Review 32:Locker box could be locked shut completely. It does leaves a tiny room of gap for someone with a small hand to reach into it even if locked. I got a bit paranoid and did not leave anything valuable behind but resulted into me carrying heavier things while sight seeing. However I didn't lose anything so it isn't too bad. I didn't really like the room keeper coming in when I was still asleep at 9am (jet lagging), I guess she was just preparing the 3 other beds for new guests. She made a lot of noise and woke me up. It's not a big deal, but kind of annoying.
Review 33:I really like how convenient and easy it is to get to the hostel from the JFK airport, and also to Manhattan City. I also like how artsy and well decorated the lounge is. I also like that there's a bar and amazing study/ computer area. Very comfortable atmosphere. The staff was friendly too.
Review 34:It is pricey, but so is everywhere in NY.
Review 35:Really nice rooms, comfortable beds, excellent location (3 subway stops into Manhattan), and a great on-site cafe. Great areas to hangout in.
Review 36:I'm wondering why there was a charge for keeping my bag for part of the day. Also, the rooms are very tiny with little room for everyone's bags and other stuff. The lockers under the bed are difficult to reach and there is no shelf on the top bunk to place a phone or alarm clock or book. (Note: Most top bunks in youth hostels have these.) Finally, if this place were any where outside of the NYC 5 boroughs it would be cheaper.
Review 37:I like the location and the helpful staff. Having a bar in the building was a plus as was the coffee in the morning. A complimentary glass of wine upon arrival was a welcomed treat. Overall the best aspect of this place is the people who work there!!!
Review 38:The bar was great, and the staff very friendly. It was cool that there is a calendar of events happening not only at the hostel but also free things happening in the city.
Review 39:Bed was pretty stiff and be ready to have back pain when you wake up. Need more hooks in the room to hang stuff.
Review 40:The perfect location to (re)discover NYC - close to every main places to be visited. Staff is great, rooms are good but quite small for 4 guys. Bar is very enjoyable. Good IPA
Review 41:The staff were not very friendly, never smiled, and seemed bothered and annoyed if you asked for a clean towel or for any kind of assistance. They did not seem to want to help you enjoy your stay.
Review 42:Great location, clean modern looking facilities.
Review 43:The rooms were very clean and very sensibly set up. I noticed house keeping stop by the rooms frequently and after every checkout. The atmosphere is quiet, laid back, and very charming. The staff, baristas and bartenders are incredible people who have a plethora of interesting conversation. If Hannah is your bartender, be sure to stay for a chat and tip extra well. I'll definitely stay at The Local whenever I'm in NYC.
Review 44:.the bed sheets were not clean .the bathroom is separated .gets noisy at night, u can hear the doors slamming and people's voices ! .No elevator so if u have big suitcases u would take them all the way using the staircase
Review 45:the price , the location, close to the subway station, friendly staff, a welcome drink
Review 46:Metro maintenance on weekends - not The Local's fault!
Review 47:I often travel and The Local has been one of the best so far! Comfortable, clean, spacious, friendly staff - will definately make this my stop again when in NYC!
Review 48:Just to remind - on the weekends there is no E train passing the closest metro station.
Review 49:The room is clean. Toilet, bathroom and the sink are separate, which make things convenient. Good wifi signal everywhere in the hostel. A lot of activities everyday, on the night we were there there was live music and free Korean food! Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 50:They stopped serving coffee at 4pm.
Review 51:Really nice hostel. Location was good, with easy access to Manhattan and Brooklyn/Wburg. Beds v comfortable. En suites v clean. Be sure to check out the smokehouse that's about 500m from the hostel, then walk down the riverbank for a view of Manhattan.
Review 52:Friendly staff, good overall facilities and location for ease of public transport to Manhatten, long island, sights and airports. Rooms airy and well fitted out.
Review 53:Lack of breakfast. It was little cold in my room during the night.
Review 54:Nice, not too big hostel, with very good connection to Manhattan. They have a bar, but it is still quiet in the rooms. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 55:The hostel doesnt have elevator so you have to bring your luggages upstair by yourself
Review 56:Comfortable bunk bed with private bathroom and aircon. Excellent view of ed koch queensboro bridge from room
Review 57:The view to Manhattan was not that good as promised... Unfortunately
Review 58:The hostel has very nice service, always helpful, polite and willing to give some tips what to visit and print tickets if necessary. Special thanks to Jonathan!
Review 59:I didn't like that in the shared room I stayed, the sink was in the same space the beds were, so if you wanted to use it and roommates were asleep, you would wake them up and get the room floor wet as well. The good thing is that there are more restrooms in the hall so is not much of a problem. The other problem, was that the hours for the laundry were very inconvenient (from 9am to 9pm). As a tourist you would usually do mundane stuff at off hours. 9am to 9pm is the most active hours to be in the city exploring (anywhere in the world).
Review 60:Good atmosphere, price, close to subway and one station away from Manhattan, close to east river and on the way to JFK (by subway). The bar is very nice, good beer and good coffee. The vault to store your things is big enough and you can borrow a padlock in case you didn't bring your own.
Review 61:Nothing.
Review 62:Everything was great! The common area, the bar, the staffs, the location. The staffs are all helpful, efficient, friendly! Only 5 mins walk from subway, a few stop to Manhattan main area!
Review 63:Location in Queens: good enough in normal times with E train connections. However, it happens that E train does not run - e.g. on week-ends or at least during the week-end I stayed there.
Review 64:Very rich offer of quality services: - Very helpful staff - Large and cosy lobby area - Very well designed rooms and dorms - High-speed WiFi and computer in rooms as well - Kitchen and laundry available to guests - Coffee shop
Review 65:.Very small room for 4 people, no Elevators. some staff absolutely rude, some realy nice. the girl with the blond very short hair was angry when i asked for things and sometimes she also didn't answer and looks Antipathetic all the time.
Review 66:good location. nice coffee,
Review 67:Great place, really easy to get to - first stop on the E line in Queens and barely two blocks walk from the station. Great atmosphere, very modern facilities, super helpful staff and a good coffee shop & bar downstairs to start and finish your day at.
Review 68:Overall it's a good hostel. Just I wish there could have been more utensils in the kitchen.
Review 69:I stayed here for 3 nights in 4-bed dorm, pretty private & peaceful. Bed is very comfy. The lounge area is nice. Near subway station. WIFI works well.
Review 70:There is only one issue that has been disturbing me even after I have left the hostel that I shall share hopefully so noone encounters the same situation. I am Asian. You can see from my face I am Asian. I have lived in U.S and U.K. for more than 5 years and have been working customers, co-workers and bosses from various countries for more than 7 years. This, you cannot see from my face. I was explained by one of the staff upon check-in to give a tip to the bartender when ordering and that "that was the way they made money in the U.S.". I had not even checked in yet. I was not at the bar but the check-in counter. I let it slide, but I believe this kind of behaviour cannot be always accepted as a joke to certain people. Anyone who chooses to work in a city as diverse as NY would have the knowledge to predict that. The more diverse environment you choose to work in, the more you should be careful about what background others may have. Another joke could have been made depending on how aware the staff was. What if the staff arrived in an Asian country and received the same hospitality. That is all.
Review 71:Location is good, only a 3 minute walk from the nearest subway station. Kitchen is convenient, please be careful the nearest grocery is open from 7AM to 9PM. Rooms are clean. But despite the repeated warnings from the staff and posters not to eat in the rooms someone was still eating in my room. The room smelled like pizza in the middle of the night. The beds shake a little when someone makes noise on the upper floor but not so much that you can't sleep. The location is a warehouse area, if you open the windows you can hear the trucks and trains but not so loud that you can't sleep either. It was acceptable for me. Considering how close it is to Manhattan, I think this is called quiet.
Review 72:It was all good except from the girl was at the cafeteria (long black wig) afrodescendent, she didn't speak to me only to tell me how much did I have to pay, rude manners, the rest of the staff were good!! A pity that for just a person the experience got not as good as it could have been.
Review 73:Nicely decorated, safe area near to the metro station!
Review 74:Kitchen facilities not so good - there were only two cookers. The bar means that there's not really a common room where people hang out without having to buy a drink.
Review 75:Staff were really helpful, beds were pretty comfortable.
Review 76:Great staff members with a lot of information about the city and local areas. This location is very close to the subway and allows for a different experience.
Review 77:nothing, it was great, nest time I'll spend more days there!
Review 78:great hostel, fully up to the New York City style!! All staff super friendly and helpful, convenient location close to the metro and just few stop from Manhattan, well decorated and organized.. it was a delightful stay!!
Review 79:Very small lockers that most roommates couldn't utilize since they won't accommodate most suitcases, having to get on hands and knees each day to access lockers placed under the beds, living out of a locker (a hostel thing), not being able to take a beer up to the roof to enjoy with the view, lack of entertainment in the immediate area.
Review 80:Very clean and mostly quiet at night. Roof deck views of the bridge and Manhattan skyline. Private bathroom with separate compartment for potty, sink, and shower. Helpful staff, live music, and bar on site. Proximity to subway, places to eat, and grocery stores nearby. Desktop computers available for guest use. Kitchen facilities, posting of activities within and outside the hostel at reduced prices. The friendly bartender with the short blond hair (great hostess).
Review 81:It is quite expensive for a youth hostel that is not even in Manhattan(even though it is only one station away from Manhattan) - Well, you canmaybe just blame that hotel prices in nyc are now really out of control.
Review 82:The room is generally large, bright, and clean. Many room have a view ofManhattan and Queensborough Bridge. They offers you a free drink (draft beer or a glass of wine) coupon that you can get drinks at their bar. Wi Fi is generally good. In their public area, there are large tables where you can sue as your workstation.
Review 83:Bed sight light could not be plugged in, so it was not working, and one of the plugs in my bunk seemed broken.
Review 84:Friendly and welcoming staff, good beds, great location close to Manhattan, the cafe downstairs was a nice place to start the day with a coffee or to finish the day with a beer.
Review 85:Some of the staff haven´t learned to smile yet, but I think they could. Fridge is very very very much too small for so many guests. Only very some food restaurants nearby.
Review 86:Great and very modern and stylish bar and rooms. Only 5 minutes walk to the metro, and another 5 minutes to get to Manhatten. Seperate sink, toilet and shower in the rooms. Good spots in the hostel with many outlets to sit with a computer. Great beer and coffee at the bar.
Review 87:A quick explanation at check-in of available services in the hostel may have helped us settle in quicker. We didn't even know about the great rooftop area until our roommate told us!
Review 88:Great hostel, great bar. Would love to stay again!
Review 89:Unlike many other hostels I have stayed at, this hostel has a bit of an anonymous atmosphere. The common areas are too big maybe and spread a cold, anonymous atmosphere. The pub crawl is definitely a must and was gread for meeting people
Review 90:The place was very clean The location is great for any trips to Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. There is a Metro Station nearby. The pub crawl was great!
Review 91:I wish they serve simple free breakfast.
Review 92:The bed was really comfy and sturdy. Room, toilet and shower are clean. Staff are friendly and helpful. Great location. Safe stay.
Review 93:I've liked everything! It was beyond my expectations! As it was my first time at a hostel i was kinda afraid of it, but everything worked perfectly!
Review 94:I found a few hairs in my bed, but other then that nothing much.
Review 95:i really like that The local had a little cafe/bar connected to it. The lobby space was also a really funky place to chill. The staff were also really helpful about getting around the city and good places to eat.
Review 96:Small shower & toilet. But hey, as long as I have hot & cold shower, clean bath & toilet. What else I can I ask for a cheaper rate :-)
Review 97:Location is very good, Court Square subway is nearby. Neigborhood is quiet and feels safe. Kitchen available. Nice roof top. Clean rooms, except when doorm mates starts to mess ;-) (I didn't notice if somebody actually cleans the room in between as I am out and about from early morning until night. Stayed 4N).
Review 98:No breakfast and no space in the fridge. Some people store food that doesn't have to be kept in the fridge and take up a lot of space. A bit expensive, should maybe include some basic breakfast options?
Review 99:I checked out in the morning but had a late flight, so after spending the day walking downtown, the staff let me have a shower, change and repack my bag. Thanks for that!
Review 100:I love the setting, the hall way is amazing, you can interact with other people if making new friends is ur thing, the kitchen won't mak u miss home!
Review 101:The staff were always available but we didn't feel they were very pleasant. For example regarding the tip policy in the U.S they were very pushy regarding tips.
Review 102:Fantastic location, very clean and good facilities for a hostel.
Review 103:Anonymous vibe. Staff a little impersonal. Cleanish by hostel standardsbut prices are steep and should get more. Activities arranged by thehostel all concern drinking.
Review 104:Wifi is fast. Dorms are small, maximum four beds. Private ensuite perdorm is good. Quiet at night for sleep. Location in Queens is great.View from rooftop.
Review 105:Each room have it's own window air con. It works loud and force you and your mates to democratically decide whether you want to sleep in a hot room vs loud room.
Review 106:Rooms and common areas were very clean and modern looking. Sink, toilet or shower - each one of them can be accessed separately. 3 min to the metro station, 1 station away from Midtown Manhattan. Previously I stayed in a hostel near the northern end of Central Park but surprisingly The Local's location worked for me better as a base for Manhattan trips.
Review 107:Special thumbs up for the cleaning ladies..the place is amazingly clean and it is appreciated. For the rest, you can trust what you read : perfect location (Manhattan isn't worth it to sleep, better to be in Queens) with subways for each boroughs, the place is awesome and the atmosphere is really nice.
Review 108:I like the lobby as it's really spacious. After we checked out and collect back our stored baggage, this is the place that we can re-arrange our baggage.
Review 109:NO atmosphere.NO elevator. In the middle of nowhere.Expensive.Rooms small and no chairs in rooms. Would choose somewhere else next time.
Review 110:Easy to get to the airport(JFK) by public transport.
Review 111:Staff slightly mixed; the guy I originally checked in with felt a bit snooty and I often found the staff unresponsive. On the other hand, on one evening, when I found there was no tin opener, one member of staff was extremely helpful. The kitchen was nice but the policies on the fridge need to be clearer; very hard to get stuff into it and avoid damaging others' stuff.
Review 112:Very good location. Nice dorm rooms with nice beds, very modern. Rooftop balcony. Having a kitchen to cook in.
Review 113:Nothing :)
Review 114:Perfect atmosphere, great location.. I arrived the hostel at around 10 pm and there was no danger around for an alone female traveller :) rooms are fine, clean and comfortable.. The staff was friendly, internet was awesome.. Thank you!!
Review 115:I would've been more comfortable if the shower had more space - the shower curtain was sticking to me all the time and if you try to get it off - the room fills with water in no time. The sheets and towel hadn't been changed during my 6 nights stay. But hey - these things are so not important comparing to what you get.
Review 116:It's amazing that for this amount of money you can get such a great deal. I had no problems with wi-fi, prices at the bar are freindly so were other guests and staff members. It was super easy to get to any part of NY since there's a train station in 5 min walk. And it has a perfect view of Manhattan few blocks away from the hostel - great space for sunset or late night conversations with your new friends from all over the world.
Review 117:Its just a little bit out of Manhattan so not the most ideal place for someone travelling by themselves as it is not as safe to use the subway at night.
Review 118:The bar was a great addition to this hostel - great way to meet people when you are travelling by yourself.
Review 119:Nothing to mention about.
Review 120:I've stayed in 4 beds female dorm with private bathroom. All was perfectly clean, very fresh. Very nice beds. Plugs to charge your phone were right next to the pillow, personal light. Location turned out to be very convenient - 15 min. on subway to 34-th str. It is also convenient to go to/from JFK. Staff is MORE than helpful: very friendly, kind and welcoming. View from the roof is beautiful, day and night. Check the awesome John Brown Smokehouse around the corner, great for meat eaters.
Review 121:The room and bathroom are so tight. Not enough space to move around. Guess it's expected of a hostel.
Review 122:The staff are are so caring and helpful. The camaraderie of the people is quite awesome.
Review 123:There isn't much I didn't like about this hostel, the only thing would be no free breakfast but that's it.
Review 124:Although not in Manhattan this hostel is in a great location, just one subway stop from the city. It also has really nice views from the rooftop. Atmosphere was really good too! There was a comedy night and music night whilst I was there. Beds were super comfortable and very clean. And the staff were really friendly and helpful too. Would definitely recommend this place!
Review 125:arrived there early in the morning and a staff member told me i will get my room at 11 so i decided to stay there and not going out to explore NYC. at 11 i asked for my check in and i was told i have to wait until 3:00pm and that the staff member, who told me about 11:00 was new. but they did well, trying to get me my room earlier so i did my check in at 1:00. what i really appreciated!
Review 126:stayed there for 3 nights, even though it was not the cheapest hostel i've ever been to, i really enjoyed my stay there. the rooms are new, clean and huge, computers are provided, wifi worked very well, there was a bar located at the entrance. the lounge was perfect for relaxing and the subway is also close, 5-8 min by walk!
Review 127:I didn't like the fact that there was no elevator in the building. Therefore carrying luggages up was a bit tasking. And there was no help on site. The rooms are too small compared to what I saw on Internet.
Review 128:Guests are very friendly and accommodating.
Review 129:The shower wasn't uncomfortably cold, it just never got hot for me.
Review 130:All of the staff was extremely kind and helpful. There were fun events going on every day (trivia night, comedy night, etc) - unfortunately I wasn't able to attend as I had a tight schedule. I always saw guests in the front bar hanging out with each other. Very easy to make new friends. The hostel is very close to the subway, it's just a 10 minute ride in to the city. I felt very safe, as I was traveling alone. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a fun and affordable way to explore New York City.
Review 131:If you are planning to arrive late you better eat or buy something before arriving to the hostal, neighborhood doesn't offer to much regarding food in the night. Shower is a little small.
Review 132:Rooms: very clean and comfortable. Overall Place: pretty interesting and modern looking, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Activities: Every day they have something interesting to do! Transportation: close enough to a metro station. Bar & Cafe: Nice place to drink some good beers, to meet people or enjoy some of the shows they have sometimes. In general a great place to stay! 100% recomended.
Review 133:Not much food to be had, but that is hardly much of a problem. Plenty of eating places close by.
Review 134:The staff is excellent, the property is clean and the rooms are comfortable. Nice location.
Review 135:twice a week you will hear music playng at the bar untill midnight, if you take a private room which is located 1st floor. dormitory is fine. very quiet:)
Review 136:location, easy to go to heart of the city. and quite afordable price!
Review 137:I liked everything!
Review 138:Loved everything. The staff had great advice on where to eat and things to do. The room was spacious and had its own bathroom which was perfect for our group of 4. The coffee was a perfect start to some ridiculously busy days. The location was good considering it was not on Manhattan- close to the underground and other amenities.
