Reviews for Inn at St John
Review 1:Everything was wonderful. We didn't think to pack drinks because it was just one day. They had water and hot drinks available at all times. The staff was really helpful, and told us about a parking spot in the lot so we didn't have to park in the overflow area and walk through snow!
Review 2:The bathrooms are tight for tall people. Coffee could be warmer at breakfast. Beds are a bit tired.
Review 3:Staff were friendly, helpful, and insightful. We were in town for a concert at Merrill Auditorium and the staff were helpful in determining transportation in inclimate weather. We decided to skip the cab in favor of reliable, timely drive home instead of waiting in the cold wondering if a cab would show.
Review 4:It was such a charming little place, very pleasant overall and an excellent value! It's nice to find a small hotel not part of a huge chain, and have it be a good experience. I'd absolutely stay here next time I go to Portland. Check out the BBQ joint practically next door, it's also very convenient to all the sights, and has free parking.
Review 5:Quaint, comfortable place. The room we stayed in was unique and quirky, which was refreshing in contrast to many cookie-cutter places which "have no light to call their own". I love the sloping hallways and abundant curves, as well as the incredibly soft bed. The staff were friendly and helpful. Will certainly come again. (I hear each room is different!)
Review 6:A bit further away from city center and outdated rooms.
Review 7:The people at the reception were wonderful! Very friendly and helpful! Everything was very clean and breakfast was nice. Rooms look a bit outdated, but I believe this to be a choice of the hotel owners? Everything is very hygienic and clean and I believe this to be most important.
Review 8:The sheets made me itch my first night. I did however, request for them to be changed and they were promotly changed.
Review 9:The staff was friendly and hospitable. I also liked the cookies.
Review 10:This is a charming inn with a homey atmosphere, very comfortable rooms, a most welcoming staff, a fine breakfast buffet, a computer in the lobby, and either walking distance or a bus one-half block away to the bus and commuter rail. It is a winner.
Review 11:Breakfast. there was no hot food, not even hard boiled eggs. The add said free breakfast, but it should have said fee of breakfast. I couldn't even get a real cup of coffee, all that is available are the gross k-cups.
Review 12:Ease of late check in location friendliness of the staff
Review 13:Room was freezing. Heat was not sufficient and air conditioner left in window made the room very drafty. No ventilation in hallway bathroom.
Review 14:Charming historic inn. Very nice staff
Review 15:The coffee carafe was empty in the am. The water in the shower fluctuated been hot and very cold.
Review 16:The room was beautiful. The staff were very professional.
Review 17:The people at the hotel were so nice and friendly. The hotel was so cozy and charming. My room had a mini fridge, safe, hair dryer and a good selection of soaps, cream, shampoo and shoe wipes. The towels were arranged and folded in a very creative and pretty way.
Review 18:Lovely character filled old hotel that has been renovated in downtown Portland. Staff was very helpful and upgraded us. Room was lovely and breakfast was a good continental b'fast. Great price for Portland!
Review 19:1st night, I was chilly. This was resolved next night when I asked for an extra blanket. I am sure I could have taken care of this 1st night w a simple call...maybe having extra blanket in room would be nice. This is minor compared to the benefits and other accommodations.
Review 20:Traveling alone can be lonely. It is so nice to be in an environment to share morning breakfast with other travelors. Friendly staff helped w this too. Convenient access to other restaurants and airport was a plus as well. I felt safe. Thank you.
Review 21:No explanation prior to booking that you were expected to carry all your luggage up steep stairs, several flights. Shared bath facilities not adequately described.
Review 22:Not much
Review 23:Parking a little tight and wifi was a little slow at times.
Review 24:Excellent staff and historic feel; great blend of old and new. Great little restaurant next door.
Review 25:The only thing is that my room was super small, I know they have much bigger ones, I just didn't check that point, as I was only staying one night. So it isn't of a big deal.
Review 26:It was a very nice hotel to stay at. There is tea, coffee and cookies offered all day long in the lobby. Very pleasant! Clean and cozy.
Review 27:Private but separate bath. Knew that at reservation but would prefer en suite. Room was on third floor with no elevator. Again, knew this at reservation but didn't know each floor was 17 steep steps up. Parking was next door in lot of Chineess restaurant.
Review 28:Good location on the edge of historic district. Grand architecture and helpful staff.
Review 29:wifi was very bad room was very small (and they made it even smaller by putting unnecessary chairs) bed was very small very far away for the city center no elevator
Review 30:easy to reach easy to park good breakfast
Review 31:Stairs to upper floors too narrow and very steep. Our dog would not even attempt to climb stairs. Could not be moved to first floor without upgrading
Review 32:Proximity to highway
Review 33:Can't believe the online ratings! The best thing I could say about the location is that it's not dangerous; however the hotel staff urged us not to leave our car on the street because it would be very likely that it would be vandalized. They advertised on site parking is extremely limited and for overflow they use a restaurant around the corner (which is where we hesitantly left our vehicle). Although the staff seemed friendly there was no offer of someone to carry our luggage up two flights of narrow stairs to our extremely small room. The furniture was more old-hand-me-down than charming-country-inn. There was a build up of black grime against the baseboards in the bathroom. The plastic pre-fab shower had a rusted shower caddy hanging from the shower head. I'm not a large person but I couldn't raise my arms to wash my hair without bumping the shower caddy and knocking the shampoo to the floor. The shower was so small I couldn't lean over to pick the shampoo up I had to do a squat. The TV was fine it you like watching a show through a snowstorm.
Review 34:The staff was friendly and there was 24 hour complimentary water bottles, coffee and cookies. Although it was not in downtown Portland, it was only a 15 minute walk to downtown. The rooms were a little dated with the bathrooms not being connected to the bedrooms, but everything seemed very clean. A nice place to stay for a reasonable price.
Review 35:There was a lot of stairs to reach our room. An apple tree in the overflow parking lot dented my car.
Review 36:It was quiet, comfortable and convenient to Old Port. The staff was helpfull and friendly. There's lots of off street parking and rooms for every budget. I ate lots of free cookies. Yum
Review 37:No housekeeping provided for 2nd night of stay. Yes, we had the 'do not disturb' sign out for 2 1/2 hours but we were out of the room for over 7 hrs. Too tired to wait for a cleaning when we got back at night.
Review 38:We had a ground floor room which had a bathroom in the room, great, as opposed to some rooms with a private bath across the hall from the room. We were well pleased and would stay there again should we return to Portland. Clean and friendly with just a short drive to the waterfront or the airport.
Review 39:New design and furnishings, a busy but semi-quiet bar, and excellent location puts this little hostel/hotel on our very short list for repeat stays in Chicago!
Review 40:Our room wasn't ready so we were forced to pay for an upgrade. We were thanked for being flexible, but that would seem to imply that we were offered the upgrade for free instead of having to pay for it since it wasn't available at the time of our check in. This Inn should be marketed more as a hotel than B&B. It lacked all of the traditional B&B charm and accommodations.
Review 41:This Inn is located very closely to the Old Port area of Portland.
Review 42:Strange odor in room, probably from AC, but I am fairly sensitive, my partner did not notice it. Shared bathroom needs some work on drainage or regular cleaning.
Review 43:Beautiful lobby, Victorian style, friendly staff. Nice room. Good location. Continental breakfast, and freebies available throughout our stay (coffee, tea, water, cookies). Overall, a pleasant experience.
Review 44:There was NOT a bad experience and I would book this hotel again.
Review 45:We loved the room and the atmosphere. The clerks went above and beyond with our requests and were very professional. The chambermaid was excellent and outdid herself with the cleanliness of the room and bathroom.
Review 46:I would have appreciated more info on the local bus lines (schedules, fares stops, etc.)
Review 47:I liked the quaintness of the Inn. Parking was easily accessible. It did remind me of a small B&B in London.
Review 48:Convenient, personable and very clean Inn. I was looking for a place to sleep while passing through Portland to Acadia and was very pleasantly surprised by this inn. Will most definitely be back.
Review 49:Steep stairs, (no elevators) and external bathroom. Bed pillows too firm. A bit far from the best locations in Portland, Over 3 miles from Commercial Street and wharf area.
Review 50:Old world charm, friendly and helpful staff. Continental breakfast was satisfying with lots of choices.
Review 51:The Inn is not within walking distance to Old Port, but if you have a car, you can easily drive. Parking on a summer weekend was difficult.
Review 52:The Inn has a quaint charm with clean rooms and a cute, cozy breakfast area.
Review 53:It would be nice to have a heartier breakfast.
Review 54:Free parking, wonderful large, qiet and air conditioned room with small refrigerator and coffe maker, helpful staff. Across the street from Maine Medical and 20 minute walk to center of town
Review 55:nothing
Review 56:We were really lucky to have booked this Inn. Internal décor beautiful.....Victoriana but loves it. Friendly, helpful, breakfast and met nice people. Best of all parking free , we have been caught elsewhere.
Review 57:There is no elevator (we were on the top (4th) floor and it was a bit tiring bringing all of our stuff up. The breakfast was average but they had a plate of delicious cookies available all day. It's a bit of a walk from downtown but there's an awesome bar right across the street (attached to Pizza Villa)
Review 58:The room was lovely, beautiful vintage furniture, very clean, great AC. The external private bathroom was super nice!
Review 59:You get actual door keys! My husband noted that the hallways are a bit reminiscent of MC Escher - kind of Hogwartsy. I really like this hotel. Its my top choice in Portland. Lots of kitsch and charm.
Review 60:There were nothing negative about the place at all. My only "small" complaint was when I asked the front desk for a recommended place to eat, I was referred to a Thai restaurant a few steps away. I wasn't sure if I made myself clear that I meant somewhere in downtown Portland, but I ended up walking to the town centre and eating at a different place than the one recommended by the front desk.
Review 61:The room was very nice, and decorated in Victorian style. The bed was very comfortable, and the room also came with some nice additions such as refrigerator and in-room sink. (for rooms without ensuite baths). I enjoyed my stay here very much.
Review 62:Friendly and knowledgeable, nice and clean room and bath, well worth the money. 15 min. Walk to downtown was not bad. Free parkingspace available, ok breakfast.
Review 63:The bed could have been a bit more comfortable. It was just ok. Theywere also in the process of resolving some issues with their wifi.
Review 64:Great staff and it felt like we were staying in a European bed andbreakfast. It's the oldest continually running hotel in Portland-open since 1897. It's been recently remodelled and is well keptthough so you get the best of both worlds- great history and comfort.
Review 65:Narrow halls and stairs. Worst shower water pressure (semi private bathrooms 2nd floor room 4B) encountered in any hotel I've been in.
Review 66:Historical Hotel. Nice room. Small room but ok for solo traveler not for 2.
Review 67:The bathroom location of the bedrooms were slightly inconvenient as well as the size of the bathroom. It was very hard to maneuver around the shower, especially for my 6'2" boyfriend. It was also hard to carry our heavy luggage all the way up the stairs.
Review 68:The staff was very friendly and professional. Everything was clean, appropriate toiletries and towels were provided. Despite the actual location of the hotel, it was only a couple minutes from downtown Portland.
Review 69:Shower caulking with mold. Shower very small and lacks hot water balancing. So if someone flushes the toilet the person in the shower is toast. Bathrrom very very small. Breakfast was nothimg to write home about apart from the fresh oranges.
Review 70:Location and size of room
Review 71:There is no elevator, so getting luggage to the upper floors is hard for those of mature age, although the staff are helpful in this respect.good v
Review 72:Convenient for the freeway and good value for money.
Review 73:The location (can't do anything about)
Review 74:The interior was very picturesque and clean. The staff was professional and friendly. There were lots of unexpected amenities such as a refrigerator, large assortment of toiletries and two white terry cloth robes!
Review 75:The shower doesn't have quite enough pressure, and the wifi for androids wasn't that stable.
Review 76:This is one of those cute hotels that I would come back to the city just for staying there again. Absolutely beautiful! The room is exquisitely decorated and thoroughly cleaned. The staff is really helpful and courteous. 24-hour free coffee and hot water. Continental breakfast is also generous. I love, love, love this place.
Review 77:The neighborhood...needs to be pointed out it is in a seedy area. Also incredibly noisy person in next room with paper thin walls.
Review 78:The staff and the ambiance inside the hotel and lobby
Review 79:the check in was delayed until quite late in the day, which was a tad frustrating.
Review 80:Good selection for breakfast, friendly desk staff, spacious room, lots of tv channels
Review 81:The friend I visited has chemical sensitivities. The house keeper was REALLY nice, in that I asked her not to clean my room with scented chemicals, and she honored my request. For anyone with a sensitive sniffer, the cleaners have a fragrance a little stronger than normal household cleaners.
Review 82:The home-like atmosphere; the inn is like a really big house. I slept better in this bed, than my bed at home. My 'house keeper' was really nice. The front desk is accommodating, (if you want to leave your bag behind the desk after check out, they let you). There is a computer and a printer for public use. I was able to print my boarding pass 'right at home.'
Review 83:Preis für Bett im 6-Bett-Zimmer an der oberen Schmerzgrenze.
Review 84:Eigentümer sehr nett und hilfsbereit; auch wenn er schon 1000mal den Weg erklärt hat. Netter Lounge Bereich.
Review 85:The only thing that might be considered bad is that the bathrooms are not in the room, but you do have your own private bathroom. I think some of the rooms on the first floor have bathrooms in the room, but 2nd and 3rd floor are not. Really not that big of a deal, just good to know before you get there.
Review 86:15 minute walk to State Theater, free bottled water, free cookies, nice breakfast. 10 foot high ceilings.
Review 87:Just that the private bathroom was down the hall, rather than directly across from our room, so we had to pass two other rooms to get there. But I expected something like that when I reserved the room, so it wasn't a big issue. Despite that, I'd stay here again if I'm ever in the area.
Review 88:I liked the layout of the hotel as well as the decor. It was a fun place to stay, and the continental breakfast was substantial, although it leaned heavily towards carbs.
Review 89:Parking was tight but convenient!
Review 90:Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was spacious and very pretty. Great to have refrigerator, microwave and Keurig in room. Breakfast buffet was attractive and there was plenty of choice. Thank you for the complimentary bottles of water!
Review 91:The Inn is well managed. I like the decor and the quaintness. The location isn't great but the value, comfort and decor make up for it! The distance to the art district is a plus.
Review 92:The wi-fi was very slow and we didn't get hot water in the shower.
Review 93:It was very comfortable and clean. Though it's not in the nicest section of the city, it was still fairly easy to walk downtown and I'm sure a cab would be inexpensive.
Review 94:The height of the shared shower (coming from someone over 6' tall). The altercation I heard in the hallway coming from another guest. The distance from downtown.
Review 95:The coziness and cleanliness of the room and entire place. I felt like I was in an Anne of Green Gables novel. The staff was always so accomodating. The breakfast spread was more than adequate.
Review 96:No elevator four flights of stairs no help from desk booked a 2 beds. Arrived and only one bed. Hotel blamed booking.com. For false advertising. Not at all happy
Review 97:Nothing!!!
Review 98:Keep in mind there is no elevator and the stairs are steep. The room has a frig, tv, air conditioner and a heater. We blew the fuse right away then learned to only have a few items on.
Review 99:Great inn. Affordable, clean with the basics. Free parking and about a 1.5 walk to novare res!
Review 100:We had to endure the digging , drilling, and jack hammering just outside our window. To be fair, it was not your fault. However, I was under the impression that you were full, so that a room in the back was not available. the bed was okay.
Review 101:Right on the bus line. Helpful staff.
Review 102:The radiators in the room were knocking much of the night making it difficult to sleep.
Review 103:Its location and access from I 295 makes this Inn very accessible. Its decor and historic restoration makes it a very interesting place to stay, not some cookie cutter decor of a franchise motel/hotel. The service by the staff was excellent.
Review 104:My room's heater was loud enough to keep me awake and my room was too warm for me. My husband slept like a rock so maybe it's just a preference thing.
Review 105:Friendly, helpful staff. Charmingly decorated rooms. Very clean!
Review 106:Nothing
Review 107:ibstayed in room 1A with my husband. We had a king sized bed that was hard, but I slept wonderfully. It appeared that out room (an end unit) was bigger than the others. The staff was great and wonderfully nice. And the muffins were delicious. Th location is good, not too close to be annoying but not too far. A $5 taxi will take you in. I highly recommend it.
Review 108:did not have a bad experience.
Review 109:the comfort, reminded me of what it was like staying at a hotel in long past with all the little extras including the furnishings, breakfast, cost. Staff were friendly, helpful, accommodating.
Review 110:No complaints!
Review 111:Front desk staff was friendly and professional, housekeeping staff was helpful and kind, room was clean, happy we got a room with our own bathroom, cookies were a special treat, location great for walking distance to downtown Portland, off street parking.......Geez! With a review like this, you'd think I have stock in the company! I don't! All in all, a very home-like atmosphere! Thank you!
Review 112:It was hot and then cold at night. Wifi didn't work very well.
Review 113:I loved the cookies and almond milk for evening and the great breakfast choices. Great to provide water bottles. We liked the way the bathroom was prepared.
Review 114:Everything, it was just perfect for us. It is a loved and cared for property with fantastic staff and amenities. Free parking/breakfast and walking distance to most everything. This is not a cookie cutter type Hotel, so if that is what you are looking for this is not for you. This is an experience for the memory book. Thank you all at the Inn on St. John
Review 115:Bathrooms are separate and down the hall. Not really an inconviemiance and to be expected in a building constructed in 1897.
Review 116:Room and bed very comfortable. We loved the ambiance and the breakfast was very generous with lots of choices. It was one of the best stays we have ever had and the staff and locals are very friendly.
Review 117:The Inn at St John was a great find. Every detail made for a great stay. The staff is courteous and friendly abd the inn is so charming and comfortable. I will definitely stay at the inn again.
Review 118:Loved everything!!
Review 119:My 19 yr old daughter & I loved everything about it. Quaint, comfortable, with all the amenities included for an amazing price. There was a refrigerator, large flat screen TV, microwave. 2 large beds with real quilts and sheets. Plush towels. Lots of room so I was able to do my morning yoga. I wish we could have had more time to spend in the Inn. We were here for a surprise party for my oldest daughter. Can't wait to go back
Review 120:Needs more accessability to outlets. Neither the coffee pot or the microwave were near an outlet. Steep stairs, but that is the house. No coffee ready for early morning airport room
Review 121:Nice room friendly people
Review 122:I really can't think of any.
Review 123:I was absolutely amazed at the quaintness, character of rooms (not your average hotel/motel room by any means), attention to extra little details, friendly staff & excellent rate! LOVED IT!!
Review 124:Climbing 2 very long narrow staircase while carrying stuff is not that convenient, but also not a big deal.
Review 125:Staff very personable and helpful, very convenient location, surprisingly quiet for being int he center of town, and really loved all the aesthetic touches - you should see what they do with the toilet paper roll!
Review 126:We chose the Inn at St. John strictly on the basis of location, within walking distance of a show we were attending, and the price. It turned out to be a wonderful experience, comparable to an expensive B&B. We will be back.
Review 127:The view out the window is a ho-hum busy street, a parking lot, or the hospital across the street. But so what---there's good parking, and driving downtown to Fore Street is a cinch.
Review 128:Loved the attention to detail, antique home, modern amenities, quirky stairways, rooms going off in every direction, high ceilings, super clean bathrooms, not cookie-cutter! Also, these Victorians can be rather prissy, but this one is not.
Review 129:We could not get our kindle (wi-fi) to work after many attempts!!
Review 130:We like the uniqueness and atmosphere of the building and the rooms. We stayed there two years in a row!
Review 131:Not too keen on the separate bathroom but accept the age of the building could make putting en-suites in rooms tricky.
Review 132:A character building close to where we needed to be. Rooms clean and comfortable. Staff very helpful, nothing too much trouble. Continental breakfast was good.
