Reviews for Henderson Castle Inn

Review 1:It was dirty, the staff was stange acting everyone not knowing what to do, everything closes up at 10am, the hot tub was not in use, etc the list is long.

Review 2:The dinner options which have to be purchased seperatly.

Review 3:The linens desperately need to be completely replaced. There were old stains on both my comforter and my bathrobe that they provided. It was gross.

Review 4:The staff was super friendly, and I had a great massage at the spa. Also loved the castle itself (especially the rooftop hot tub).

Review 5:Food is terrible. Very expensive when the gratuities are added in. Bed was super uncomfortable. Room had spa bath but never thought about the fact that there was no shower.

Review 6:Staff and the building were awesome.

Review 7:Stayed in the Queens tower, the bathroom mirror is in an awkward position.

Review 8:Breakfast was exquisite, the staff was awesome. The property and castle is beautiful.

Review 9:The beautiful building, rooms and facilities. The staff were excellent and the Chef was outstanding. We are planning a return visit to stay in one of the other unique rooms. The continental breakfast included in the room rate was delicious. It was a unique European experience.

Review 10:Was expecting a little more with the advertising of their french dinner menu. However the overall dining experience was pleasant.

Review 11:Loved the room. Best sleep. Small but just wraps you up in comfort. Best sleep traveling in a very long time

Review 12:Drinking glasses had left-over lipstick on them. Bathtub in room had mold around the outside.

Review 13:LOVED the rooftop hot tub! Enjoyed being able to see all the rooms that were not occupied.

Review 14:The most apathetic excuse for management I have ever seen in 30 years of bed and breakfasts. Interior is so poorly maintained we will not return. Our bed in the Miracle room was held together at the footboard by a small piece of two by four and the headboard stabilized by a long two by four. It creaked every time I rolled over.Looks like it came from the Goodwill store. Dusty room and the bathroom has no towel bars. Strange arrangement of shower nozzles made the entire bathroom the shower so the two of us could not use it at the same time.Lights so dim I could not see.Windows lacked screens and the noise from the highway is noticeable. Dining room floors in deplorable condition. Dining room windows had gobs of caulk to seal the holes where handles to open them should be..Many extra charges for everything. They do not tell you ahead of time so be sure to ask. Also, forget enjoying that bottle of wine you picked up earlier, they do not allow any wine except their own overpriced bottles. Forget watching anything on the TV because we could only get a few cable channels with bad reruns. The breakfast staff was one unprepared female. She had to take time to boil water for tea as if it was an unusual request. I also had to ask for a teaspoon and sugar because they do not have any on the tables. Really? The whole place struck me as a business they are trying to sell as luxury without actually supplying it. Avoid this poor excuse for accommodations and book any of the other nearby B &Bs.

Review 15:Exterior of the property is beautiful architecture.

Review 16:The beds and furnishings were quite worn down. The continental breakfast could have been better. But it was okay.

Review 17:The character of the building was amazing.

Review 18:I thought the gardens were in bad shape, the one sofa in the Italian room had a lot of built up dust on it, and the television was too tiny, almost needed binoculars to see it

Review 19:It was a beautiful castle, very intriguing.

Review 20:Overall, this was a magical experience and we are planning to return sometime and tell our friends. The small issues were that we were put on the third floor which was a hardship for my husband who has bad knees. A lower floor was requested when we booked months prior. The young lady attempted to change us from the top floor and eventually was able to do so, but it was not communicated to us by the person in charge that night. There was a lack of communication several times, but the high quality and beauty of the facility more than made up for it.

Review 21:The grounds, the house, the meals, the tour, conducted by Alex, was outstanding, the wine tasting was very good as well!

Review 22:We asked for additional toilet paper & the young boy who dropped it off walked in without knocking. It was very hard to shower in the cottage, the water sprays out every where except on your body.

Review 23:I loved the amount of space on the grounds. The privacy was excellent. Driving around & finding what we were looking for was easy & convenient.

Review 24:The room had mold in the bath room and also there was mold and the wood casing was rotting on one of the doors. The bed was rock hard with no bed spring and the pull out couch would be a good one for the Adams family due to all the mattress being all springs. There was a rug to hide crackes in the tile floor next to the toilet. Very unsanitary. The site offered a kitchenette and private hot tub where both were not present. It was a shame that the grounds were unkept because it had potential.

Review 25:The dinner we had there was tasty however we waited a LONG time

Review 26:The interior may use some redecorating work. Original furniture and commodities may be impressive and fascinating to look at, but not very practical to use.

Review 27:Everybody in the staff is polite and helpful. The position is charming - the graveyard that lies just on the other side of the road lends it a particular gothic aura. Charming, for all those that don't get creeped out.

Review 28:Where would we have gone if the weather was unpleasant? There is very little public space. The room was small and the bed was soft and saggy, but worst of all was the uncleanliness of the room. There was dirt in the corners of our room, cobwebs behind the curtains, and the glasses in our room were filthy. Breakfast was understaffed and quite meager compared to our other experiences at B&Bs.

Review 29:The location and the view from the veranda were very pleasant for a warm spring evening. Our dinner was delicious.

Review 30:SEEMS AS IF THE CASTLE IS TRYING TO RUN ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET. WE WERE NOT WARMLY WELCOMED ON ARRIVAL AND DINNER WAS GOOD BUT TOO PRICEY, FOR WHAT WE RECEIVED.PROPERTY NEEDS SOME TLC. AND MORE HELP.

Review 31:THE ROOM- VERY UNIQUE.

Review 32:Our room only had one full size bed with barely enough room to walk around the bed. No chair, desk, etc. The bathroom had no shower. There was a tub, but it didn't look clean enough for us to want to use it. Our balcony was slanted for rain runoff, so not very comfortable to sit at. Plus it faced a busy road. Just not the amenities that a hotel room would have had.

Review 33:Breakfast was wonderful. Good food in a beautiful small charming dining room.

Review 34:Did not know know how to access light panels to turn on bath light. Showered in the dark. No water pressure on sink side of steam room. No water in morning or during late evening. Unable to contact desk without going down three flights of stairs.autth

Review 35:Quiet location, decor.

Review 36:Extremely outdated facilities, no closets (in our room - top of castle), no ability to control climate, although TV was available, there were only 7 local basic channels. We stayed at a rather chilly spring time and although there is a large hot tub on the roof, it was not functional.

Review 37:The outside appearance was beautiful, roof access with pretty views of surrounding Kalamazoo city, attentive smiling staff, good dinner food, nice common rooms.

Review 38:Our room wasn't finished as well as we would have liked (missing grout, disconnected toilet paper holder, 2 colors of grout, poorly painted/stained trim, etc). There is no cable tv. You can't watch movies, just what is on the antenna. Our room was right next to the lounge people could reserve after 10pm and there was loud music making it difficult t sleep. Breakfast was not served on time. We ended up leaving after 20 minutes without food.

Review 39:Most of the castle was beautifully done. There were a lot of things to see in the castle and places to go (hot tub, man cave, etc). For the most part, you did not hear the other guests (exhaust fans in the morning, but no voices).

Review 40:It was a restaurant pretending to be an Inn. A facility would have to serve breakfast to be considered a B&B. The bathroom was filthy.

Review 41:The historic aspect of the building.

Review 42:Extremely short-staffed for the continental breakfast. Also, while the antique furniture in the Victorian Room was pretty, the beds are tiny.

Review 43:We were in town visiting our daughter at Kalamazoo College, so the location set on a hill overlooking campus was perfect. We enjoyed touring the historic Victorian and learning about the home's history. The stained glass windows and woodwork are beautiful.

Review 44:The castle is amazing! The true to form history of the place was great. The staff were so nice and accommodating! We were on our honeymoon, and we can't wait to go back!!

Review 45:The staff was helpful and very accommodating. The castle is so unique, with little treasures around every corner. Fantastic little get away that is a great alternative from standard chain hotels with boring continental breakfasts. The food was amazing! My room was actually cheaper than most local hotel rooms. I will always check for availability at the Henderson first when visiting Kzoo.

Review 46:Booked the cottage suite b was told by staff i was in cottage suite a and they could "upgrade" me for an additional fee per night. Worst hotel experience in more than 12 years of travel. No mirror, No hair dryer, Wi-fi was laughable and I finally gave up. Left after 1 night. Even though they did NOT give me the room I booked, they charged me for 4 nights. RIP OFF

Review 47:Nothing. This is a huge rip off and a bait and switch. They obviously do not care about return business.

Review 48:Did not have a kitchen in cottage or full breakfast included in rate as stated in booking.com promotion; limited parking due to work being done outside

Review 49:View; picture opportunities; staff extremely professional, helpful, and friendly; eleven course meal filling and delicious; Waiter Marcus was awesome

Review 50:Well ! First , i ordered a room ....(2 queensize-beds) . Got a room with one bed , and a sleeping sofa ... ( that was like 2000 years old ) woke up with marks all over leg and back, from a worn out mattress, spring loaded, and more, it had not been changed from the last user.... I will not even say more about this place .... Sorry .

Review 51:what did i like ... Well ! I liked the idea of staying at a Castle...

Review 52:The atmosphere was great.

Review 53:Mattress was to soft.

Review 54:Friendly staff, comfortable room and excellent continental breakfast! Authentic old furnishings made for a pleasant stay.

Review 55:Need a lot of tlc our room was a little run down

Review 56:Facilities and landscaping need some TLC.

Review 57:French Restaurant on premises. Wine cave.

Review 58:our dinner and accomadations

Review 59:the castle is nice

Review 60:They allowed me to let my Granddaughters to stay with me one night. They were so excited. It was a very nice experience for all of us.

Review 61:Bed was too hard.

Review 62:Food, location, beautiful area, wonderful staff.

Review 63:ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I will be returning to stay in another themed room!

Review 64:I loved wandering around the castle at my leisure as a guest!

Review 65:It was WAY overpriced for what you got. The room we had, Maple Tree, was smaller than our bedroom at home. The pictures on the website are very deceiving.

Review 66:The place itself was beautiful. The food was excellent! The staff was friendly and the grounds were well kept.

Review 67:Three floors, no elevator. I understand they are working toward remedying this issue. Would not keep me from coming back!

Review 68:Fascinating place with interesting staff full of stories. Lunch was delicious and served with the utmost care in formal elegance. Our room (Tibetan) made for a one of a kind experience. The grounds and gardens beautiful. Overall the property is an ongoing work in progress (to be expected for an 1895 Castle). Pricey but worth it. I highly recommend this unique venture to everyone.

Review 69:Bed, too high, creaky, and no comfortable place to sit in the room. Light in closet area not working.

Review 70:The grounds and hearing about their plans for vineyards and wine cave.

Review 71:We stayed in "Cottage A" -the online photos look quite appealing! Actually it is run down! Someone tried to give it an Asian theme, (which is weird if you're emulating a castle.... in the USA) I think - but ended up falling short, and decorating with garage sale grade items. There were electric cords running across the floor from a lamp and fireplace. The bathroom left a lot to be desired. There was black mold in the corner ledge of the tub, and the tub was peeling! and dirty in appearance, as was the sink. We chose to not use the tub. My booking.com reservation noted "breakfast included" yet we were told that was not the hot breakfast, but the continental. All in all, our goal was to stay in a "castle" and we did. For $159 per night, it was way over priced. The owners really need to clean up and spruce up the place if they're going to continue to charge that much. If the saying goes, "you get what you pay for" -- we didn't.

Review 72:visiting a castle - and "Franklin" whom helped us any way he could

Review 73:The continental breakfast was a major disappointment. More like pathetic. Our cottage's back steps were missing and we had to walk around to access the hot tub--dark and dangerous. I stubbed my toe quite badly.

Review 74:The castle is beautiful and the dining was elegant. We stayed in a cottage and it was nice. We enoyed our vist, but it was a novelty; we will most likely not return.

Review 75:We made arrangements through third party internet company and then (more near the arrival date) cinfurmed reservations and set up. Called twice in fact. On the phone we were told everything was good and ready to go. That was not the case when we arived. The 7 course meal was dusappointing. The server was execellent . The food was salty and processed ... Disappointing. The cheese cake perfect. The home made wine was also very good. Bartender 'Squirrel' was fun and made an excellent gin and cherry beverage that was very giid: husiwn invention!

Review 76:Beautiful setting

Review 77:Bed was awful - completely shot springs, tilted and creaked, very soft; the room was not as advertised - the lovely fireplace frame shown in the picture had been removed leaving in part raw wall; the TV was mounted very close to the ceiling and not at a good angle so you could not see the picture; undisclosed on line: you enter through the bathroom!; room was confirmed "including breakfast" but in the morning I was told I could have cereal for free but a more substantial breakfast would cost $8.95 - should have been disclosed in the booking; so much for bed (bad) and breakfast (extremely limited); staff interaction consisted of taking credit card and requiring signing of a 2-page legal disclaimer!

Review 78:building itself is nice from outside; location is OK

Review 79:Coachhouse is a bit run down. Property in general seems to need a little TLC.

Review 80:Hot tub outside the Coachhouse. Good breakfast. Main house is attractive attractive and a nice setting.

Review 81:Some of the bathtub fixtures leaked. They had a coffee maker in the room, but no coffee for it (I asked). It could use more towel hooks

Review 82:Very unique place - like that there was a hot tub right outside of our door

Review 83:We wanted the full breakfast and on the web site said breakfast included. But it was the continential breakfast but was not mentioned. We discussed it and the staff said it did not say on the site so we got the big breakfast. The next day it was put on that it was the continential breakfast.

Review 84:The place was amazing. Very beautiful.

Review 85:Vintage shower in the French room was too high for me. I'm 5'3 and it was directed at my head and face rather than my body.

Review 86:Enjoyed staying in this gorgeous B&B instead of a hotel. Great location to WMU campus and Will definitely try and stay there again when visiting my son. Very good food and excellent coffee.

Review 87:The staff was excellent and very kind during our stay. We were in one of the cottages and it was a very comfortable relaxing space. Henderson Castle had lovely architecture and the staff let us look around as much as we liked. I definitely would come again.

Review 88:Maybe this isn't fair because we are just coming out of winter but I thought the grounds needed a great deal attention. Additionally, we got a couples massage and my boyfriend's female therapist was absolutely great but I thought my male therapist was sort of rude and didn't do a very good job. I walked out thinking I should have just not gotten one at all.

Review 89:This place was so cool! The castle was so intriguing from the moment you walked in. The staff is very accommodating. The food was very good! On a side note, according to the internet, the castle is known to be haunted. We did not know that before we booked nor did we have an experience but it was pretty cool to think about!

Review 90:It was cold in the rooms.

Review 91:The staff was concerned about our comfort and met our needs when we pointed out certain problems. You have very good employees that are courteous and helpful. A big thanks to the staff!!

Review 92:The hot tub was said to be private, if by private they mean shared by another room and can be viewed by the entire hotel then it was very private. Also the online description said DVD and kitchen in room there was not.

Review 93:No phone in room. No instructions for the Jacuzzi. Not enough electrical outlets. Not enough grounded electrical outlets. No dresser. Not enough hangers in the closet. Very noisy heater. The only drinking glasses provided were wine glasses -- very dangerous in the bathroom. No shelf to put personal items in the bathroom.

Review 94:The location was very convenient to downtown.

Review 95:The castle has gone downhill from previous owners. The hot tub was out of commission. The breakfast was continental. I have never had a continental breakfast at a B & B. That is one of the reasons I stay at a B & B. I was very disappointed in my stay.

Review 96:The castle itself.

Review 97:The original room (cottage suite A) lost power the night before so we were offered a different room(the room price was lower then the room we originally booked) at the same price. The room was small. I think they should offer a nicer room in such circumstance.

Review 98:We liked the architecture. It was beautiful, very ornate. Food at the restaurant was delicious.

Review 99:We loved the French room, it was classy in it's vintage look. Just being at the Castle was a warm and welcoming feeling. Next time we will be prepared to use the hot tub, which is awesome on the roof top!

Review 100:That the entire castle was not well taken care of. The Italian room (theone I was suppose to stay in) was lovely but the shower wasn'tworking, the floor tiles were cracked, the towels were dirty and thesmall tv over the armoire was located too far plus it was hard to watchtv when there are snow flakes on the screen, and the jets on the hot tubcould not be used cause after filling up the tub and turning on the jetsblack flakes started to spit out through the jets which was a hugedisappointment, cause I waited over 20 mins for the tub to fill, plus Icouldn't use the shower cause it was broken. They moved us to asmaller room, which only had a double bed, instead of queen, and thewindows face the street so we could hear the traffic all night. Also, inthe smaller room the rain shower head needed cleaning so the water spitout in all the wrong direction. The entire stay was a nightmare. I wouldnever stay there again. And, the 7 course meal was tasteless, the chefwas not a good cook.

Review 101:That it was situated on a small hill and, that it offers history causeit was built years ago. The furniture, the high ceiling all the lovelywoodwork, the roof top, the staircase.

Review 102:We booked on line for a king bed and when we got there the only 2 rooms available had queen beds. The Miracle room where we stayed was small, the bed was more like a full size bed, certainly not the queen as avertised. No TV in the room and the tub/shower was difficult to use due to the sloped ceiling.

Review 103:Food was great, We enjoyed both the dinner and breakfast meals

Review 104:don't bother coming if you are going to sit and watch tv. this is not the place for you.

Review 105:excellent value! monsieur guyton is a very gracious host, and truly amazing location.

Review 106:My bedroom was right above the kitchen and it was a bit loud until about 11 PM.

Review 107:The castle was beautiful and the location was great! Staff were very accomodating and the food was delicious!

Review 108:No towels No robes Chef ended up looking for some in the dryer with nosuccess Bed sheets worn and musky No curtains in room No access to rooftop hot tub because you have to walk through the spa and a massage wasin session Breakfast took an hour to serve (we left and ate at anoutside restaurant) Front access steps falling apart and trip hazardUpon checking out, staff did not ask about our stay (seems they dontcare) Overall, really disappointed.

Review 109:The idea

Review 110:Small beds, short uncomortable chair, no couch, just not a place to spend a couple of days relaxing. This place is a novelty. You may want to visit and then find a nice place to stay.

Review 111:Heated Floors

Review 112:We were returning from a business trip in Chicago and were stranded by a foot or more of snow. Jane welcomed us as if we had been guest invited into her home. Tommy served us a delicious breakfast and made every effort to clear the driveway of snow. The ambiance is wonderful and the history laden decor is amazing. We felt as if we were in a Currier and Ives moment in time, especially after the craziness of 3 days. In Chicago. Don't miss the experience if you are planning on being in Kalamazoo. Up North residents.

Review 113:I wish we could have ordered appetizers and snacks. There should be a bartender when sitting outside to serve you.

Review 114:Very polite staff.

Review 115:Cable tv was a bit iffy.

Review 116:Old world charm of the building. It was lovely to have someone actually serve the continental breakfast in the morning.

Review 117:I really like our room and how "homie" it was! The Castle was beautiful and I wish we could have spent more time there.

Review 118:The staff was great so friendly and knowledgeable.

Review 119:Liked the care and attention that we received from staff.

Review 120:Due to the extreme cold temperatures, room was only 62 degrees. Staff was very helpful by providing electric space heater.

Review 121:Staff promply to our needs.

Review 122:Electricity shut down several times. Staff were nice but not prepared specially at breakfast time.

Review 123:The casle was nice. Decorations were unique

Review 124:The room had a musty old smell. The TV on the wall was up to high on the wall & was small.

Review 125:The Food was fantastic!

Review 126:Rented one Bedroom cottage- hot tub did not work-floor mat wet from toilet-tub was chipped-no fridge

Review 127:unique

Review 128:They are under renovation which now makes things a bit messy...

Review 129:The idea is great, place is kind of Charming

Review 130:Room small , charged too much for the room and food.

Review 131:Food is good and close downtown.

Review 132:For some reason there was not breakfast seved.

Review 133:It was beautiful.

Review 134:Older design made it a little dark (wood and decor, etc...) and as aresult, the sound reveberated (it was a little noisy)

Review 135:Character of property
