Reviews for Chinatown Hotel Chicago
Review 1:The old radiators need to be replaced especially for the bathroom and the temperature of the water, though it took a little while to get hotter with the subzero temps.
Review 2:I like the economical price for three days and the space, bedroom and bathroom.
Review 3:Toilet is poorly maintained. Not so clean. broken soap holder not repaired or replaced but left hanging. Hot water flow is inconsistent. Bed cover not clean
Review 4:location is close to McCormick Place
Review 5:Third floor walk-up, no elevator nd web site didn't mention. Room was cold and no way to turn on heat.
Review 6:Flexibility, I had to change he date and they accommodated me easily, with no extra charge. Also proximity to downtown.
Review 7:No complaints, other than the entire Chicago hotel market is high-priced compared to other Midwestern cities. So while this place isn't cheap, it's a good value.
Review 8:We enjoyed our stay. Great location near the Red Line and Chinese food/shopping. The accommodations were what we expected: clean but spartan. Totally fine for a quick trip where you're wanting to save money and just need a place to sleep.
Review 9:No elevators. Too small of a room to be called a suite. No coffee for coffee maker. No heat just an electric heater. No space to move around.
Review 10:Was by public transportation.
Review 11:The room was too small, it smelled veryyyy badly, the sheets were dirty with hair on them and on the towels, too. I hope I did not get an infection!
Review 12:Only the location
Review 13:Shower was just a trickle and leaked--I stepped onto a wet floor when I took a shower. When couldn't find hotel and tried to call, I repeatedly was answered by a voicemail.
Review 14:Willingness of staff to help
Review 15:There was no elevator, so we had to carry heavy bags up two flights of very narrow stairs. I don't think it was handicap accessible at all. The bed sheets was a flat sheet, which I know is common in hotels. However, it wasn't big enough to tuck around the mattress; it rested on top and moved with you. The spare blanket had actual dirt on it. The two pillows included (no extras) were flat and yellowed. The bathroom needed to be bleached. There was never any hot water; showers were lukewarm at best. The towels were threadbare. Standard amenities weren't included: hair dryers, telephone. All in all, the only thing going for this hotel is the location, which I think is why it got so many stars. I would definitely not recommend this hotel.
Review 16:It was convenient to the Red Line. The staff was friendly, but spoke little English.
Review 17:the rooms are quite worn-down. However, essential components (towels, bedsheets, toilet etc.) were clean
Review 18:relatively cheap and quiet for a hotel close to the city center
Review 19:This is the worst hotel I have stayed in, over a 25 year span of staying in Chicago on a regular basis. The room was very dirty. Long black hairs in the bed. Same with the sink. When I asked for new sheets from the front desk, I was refused. Tons of noise at 4:30 in the morning when the garbage truck came. Dirty stained carpet. Seriously, don't waste your time or money on this. We landed a room here because it was during the Cubs playoff games and it put an enormous damper on our trip. We are not high maintenance but just require a clean room. Really a bad experience.
Review 20:Nothing about our stay was enjoyable.
Review 21:it's dirty (I found hair in my bed sheet!!!) and it was very expensive due to triathlon world finals in Chicago. In that week end the hotel was the cheapest one and available one in Chicago but I would never go back!
Review 22:it's very close to the metro station
Review 23:Horrible coffee. Guy at the reception who speaks good English same way very unpleasant. Others are nice and trying to help but with no knowledge about their own city. The whole hotel needs a proper renovation. Looks like quick and cheap Chinese buffet without buffet.
Review 24:Location is ok, 3 min walk to subway and 3-4 stops to centre. Spacious room and bathroom. Quiet area and lots of cheap Asian places to eat.
Review 25:Cleanliness and room quality on par with Motel 6. They don't do much cleaning here
Review 26:It was very convenient to the McCormick convention center and reasonably priced
Review 27:The floors looked like that haven't been washed since 1964. The satellite tv didn't work. Wifi didn't work in the room. Water pressure is non-existent. My window literally faced a brick wall! If you pay cash you suddenly find you have to leave a deposit of $20 (not mentioned on website) and if you ask about it, the older guy gets really snippy. The first night we walked in on the younger guy being really rude to a guest--an old lady--who was asking about a day pass for attractions. Both nights I arrived there were shady characters hanging around and the street lights seemed to be out on the block. Normally, I'd rather not write anything rather than write a bad review, but that place is just unacceptable.
Review 28:The lady who runs the place is lovely. They have free Buddhist teachings books in the lobby. It's very close to the train and just a stop or two away from major attractions. Great restaurants and shops in the area.
Review 29:The room description for a suite on booking.com did not much what I found. Actually for a solo traveller, a queen room would be better than the suite.
Review 30:It's closer to the Redline and a few meters away from my conference venue. The room rate was fair as compared to most facilities within the area
Review 31:the staff were not helpful with a simple request. Didn't know area. argumentative. no elevator. all rooms on second floor. not soundproof. heard everything going on in rooms close to mine. you get what you pay for, which isn't much.
Review 32:Smell was horrible noises at night very loud but for the price what do you expect it met our needs of a place to sleep
Review 33:Location to Metra was perfect for our needs
Review 34:A very bare bones, minimal hotel. Cleanliness was adequate, but barely.
Review 35:Good location near bus and CTA and lots of great restaurants around. Suite had 2 proper bedrooms.
Review 36:I have stayed a few times at this property. The staff are friendly and have things together for your check in promptly. I especially like the room key. Its original and shows the style of China ;-) Its cool ... Making it into a dogtag with a hole and a neckchain could also be cool......
Review 37:It is technically an SRO. The lobby and hallways and stairs, there was no elevator were grubby. The walls thin and noisy. I asked for a late check out of noon instead of 11:30 which was an option but instead I was told if I was not out of the room by 11:55 I would be charged more and the front desk began to call me at 11:45 to basically tell me I had to be out. Hospitality not their strong suite. The location is in the heart of China town which is convenient to the Red CTA line but there is no convenient shops and stores that sell non asian products, Save one Wallgreens and they do not sell alcohol.
Review 38:The AC worked great.
Review 39:-Bed bugs and flies in room -No adequate blind/curtain in street facing bathroom -Oversized furniture in small room -No where to put shower items in shower; holder broken
Review 40:The close proximity to the train station.
Review 41:There is no elevator and you have to take the luggage upstairs/room yourself. Staff wont do that for you. There was no breakfast in my case.
Review 42:Overall I liked the hotel. The location is excellent. It's literally 2 minutes walk to the train station and in 5 minutes you are in downtown chicago. Basically this hotel and China town are already almost very near to downtown. After 1 station in the train, the downtown area starts. A/c worked really well. Room was clean and toilet was not bad either. Staff is friendly and guides you about visiting the tourist spots of chicago with the map. Free drinking Water. Bed was comfortable. Most of the negative reviews done by other people, I disagree with the after staying at the hotel
Review 43:It was all so bad i dont know where to start , 1st they had no soda machine ,then the room was so tiny it was not much more then a closet, and 3rd it was not very clean and in no way resembled the photo on the site.
Review 44:The desk clerk was very helpful in helping us with directions..
Review 45:After arriving at the hotel from a long day & flight from Seattle,Wa at around 2am we checked in for 2 nights at this hotel. Easily checked in and given our key to our room, arriving at the room we were met with a filthy room covered with womens dirty underwear, bags and bags of trash, and used sanitery towels littering the room, called front desk to get this rectified and given a new room. we were called on day 2 saying we were due to check out but we had booked another day and forced to pay more money or have to leave the accomodation. Staff were so unfriendly i was actually shocked, with the man at the front desk not willing to comprimise or have any sympathy for the hotels mistake! Shocking customer service. The guy was literately yelling at us. Hotels mishap but yet we were blamed.
Review 46:easily accesible from train station.
Review 47:Dirty,expensive and smelly placce. The third night we stayed there, the boy at the reception asked us the ID,acting as a suspicious policeman, looking us as if we were thieves.
Review 48:Location, close to metro station.
Review 49:No complaints.
Review 50:In the heart of Chinatown. Next to the Redline. Found ample free parking nearby. Friendly staff. I've stayed here 4 times in the last few years. Will probably come back.
Review 51:Room was not the same as advertisement on the web site. Small room no cable tv. No microwave of refrigerator. Small bathroom with a strange smell.
Review 52:Liked the location and surrounding restaurant's and shop's. Nice naborhood full of life and nice people.
Review 53:1. Nice, strong air conditioning. 2. Such easy access to the Red Line, which runs 24/7. Only 4 minute walk from hotel. 3. Very good value for the money. Safe, clean, comfortable. New and luxurious? No. Great view? No way.
Review 54:The rooms were TINY and not overly clean--we found dust behind and under things, and the bed wasn't fully clean. Everything was old and worn.
Review 55:The staff was very nice and helpful. The room was inexpensive and an easy 3-4 min walk to the train. There were terrific, inexpensive restaurants open late for dinner and bakeries open early for breakfast. I felt very safe at the hotel and in the neighborhood. The AC and shower worked great.
Review 56:There were a pair of (I assume) dirty underwear on the floor when we checked in. However, this might be why the room smelled like a bleach factory. Also, the lack of a smoke detector was a nice touch.
Review 57:Fairly close to stadium and attractions.
Review 58:Male staff not helpful at all The room was tiny Decor from the dark ages and very worn out Smelly and stuffy Bathroom very small and shower was full of damp flies The only good thing about this hotel was the location which was close to train and bus and about 10 mins from the city Aircon constantly spitting black fluff
Review 59:10 mins away from city centre
Review 60:When entered first time, chlorine smelled heavily in the room. When leaving I noticed that my clothes were smelling mildew.
Review 61:Location near the train station. Easy access from city.
Review 62:Wifi too poor and room's handle a bit odd to open and close. The room's key is not very comfortable to hold and carry. No car parking available.
Review 63:Location is quite comfortable, not far from the city centre.
Review 64:Parking was tough. Rent a compact car. You'll be able to parallel onthe street if you do due diligence. Rip-off lots (with no in and outprivileges, mind you) are all around but search for the street. In asmaller car, you'll get fit.
Review 65:Right next to the L. Hopping neighborhood with cool bars and restaurantsall around.
Review 66:I am somewhat concerned with security of the rooms in this hotel.
Review 67:It's a place to stay overnight. Rooms are fine, if you're a seasoned traveler.
Review 68:TV was not working, extra cost for parking on a public place relatively high
Review 69:Excellent location, just at the exit from highway; walking area to McCormick Place; spacious room and washroom, good bed, everything clean, friendly staff
Review 70:Room was tiny shower had low pressure. bathroom sink had hair in it. The "free WiFi" didn't work on the second floor.
Review 71:Little to nothing I liked
Review 72:Old, dingy room, facing street loud at night and un early mornings, no amenities.
Review 73:Reasonably close ( bus, or 10 min walk to McCormick Center). Chinese food in neighborhood.
Review 74:Had a coffee pot but it was dirty and no coffee was provided. Walls dirty, no clock, batteries taped to TV controller loose wires coming out of ceiling, furniture was worse then what you can get from a second hand store. Save your money and go some where else.
Review 75:It had a big bathroom.
Review 76:No real complaints...maybe colder ac..i like cold when I sleep or to get out of the summer heat for a bit
Review 77:It's just a small jump off point to get a little rest and hose off..close to the L and reggies...easy to explore the city from
Review 78:No elevator, 30 year old mattresses, torn linens, etc. Not even the low cost comforts that even Motel 6 offers. I'm sure it looks the same as it did in the 1930's when it was built. The cab drivers were even concerned coming to the area to pick me up.
Review 79:Short of the owner's wife who had a pleasant smile and demeanor, there is nothing else positive to list.
Review 80:No coffee maker, I asked and was told people steal them. odor could be better, worn carpet, bed saggy, pillows terrible. Hot water didn't last long. toilet seat comes loose for my big butt. only view that was available was brick building next door.
Review 81:location, safe neighborhood, found, free parking on street. Great price for a stay in Chicago. Room 111 was pretty quite.
Review 82:The air conditioner didn't work. The shower was barely enough room for one person. And there was no hot water half way through one shower.
Review 83:The location was the best part of the stay
Review 84:No cable so if the weather is bad and you are stuck in doors you have nothing to watch. No elevators so we sleeping kids and bags it was difficult to get to the 3rd floor. No breakfast and no resteaunts or stores close to get anything
Review 85:Only a 2 Block walk to the resin and just a few short stop to downtown.
Review 86:Everything in this so-called "hotel" is awful! Extremely duty room, pool wifi signal, unfriendly staff. No breakfast, parking place, no elevator. If you want to test your bottom line of a place to stay, try this one.
Review 87:Absolutely nothing. The only positive thing is the efficiency of the receponists to deal with complaints and cancallation of reservation. Obviously, it is the most important part of their daily works.
Review 88:Nothing to dislike!
Review 89:Chun was very nice making reservations with me. The person who checked us in was very nice and even put us in a room on the ground floor when he saw how much luggage we had.
Review 90:There were holes in the walls and ceilings, literally. The rooms are awfully compacted. The phone in the room fell apart as soon as you touched it. Sheets and covers on the bed were stained. The A/C didn't work correctly. The neighborhood is very sketchy.
Review 91:Going to Chicago.
Review 92:Upon checking in the guy at the front desk didn't even have my reservation entered correctly. I had to show him my email to verify that I had booked a room for the correct day. The room was small and falling apart. We checked out at 12:58 and the guy at the front desk charged me $35 for a "half day". That's fine if half day was like at 6pm, but it's at 1pm!!! After 1 they charge for the full day. That's retarded. Place is cheap but don't get those first floor rooms. They are like broom closets or a dungeon.
Review 93:The room, especially the carpet and the sheet and towel, was not very clean. The room and the whole hotel was smelly
Review 94:great location, very close to bus stops and train station. good Chinese and pan-Asian food in just blocks, if you like Asian food. The wifi was better than I expected
Review 95:I notified the hotel a day prior to me leaving hawaii to Chicago to find out if it would be okay that I checked in early the gentleman said okay verified my flight info, however after long flights and sleeping in a airport due to layovers was told when I got to the Chinatown hotel had to wait until 3:00pm to check-in, OMG!!! I spoke with this guy the day prior. I was told around 1:00am :(... Out of extreme tiredness I agreed to pay $30 to check in early. My room door was open, cigarette burns on the comforter, freezing without heat/heater, smoke detector hanging from ceiling with wires exposed and cut!!. I switched rooms and the next room was just as bad. I slept with all my clothes on and used my traveling blanket to cover me. For future travelers!!! Always do your research and read the reviews.
Review 96:I liked that there was a different person behind the desk when I went to check out the next day.
Review 97:The room was filthy. Questionable brown streak on wall by the bathroom. Hair in shower. Bathroom smelled of mold. A/c didn't work & window didn't stay open. Cable was in & out.
Review 98:Cheap. Two minute walk to the Red Line.
Review 99:We can check-in to the room at 3 pm, but when I got in my room at 3 pm, the room was still not cleaned. To sum up, the hotel has a major issue with its cleanliness.
Review 100:Everything. I arrived around noon to check in and then left to go aboutmy day. I returned around 11pm. Upon arriving to my room, I find amassive cockroach. I go to the front desk to ask for a new room, but theman working has poor English so he doesn't know what a cockroach is.Someone in the lobby drew him a picture. He apologized and got me a newroom. The room he gave me appeared to be an upgrade--it had two bedroomsand a slightly bigger bathroom. Although I'm still very disgusted bythe cockroach, I decide to try to go to sleep. About a half hour later, the man working there knocks on my door. He says that there is someonecoming to stay in the other bedroom. I tell him that is not okay. Hetells me it is okay and I just have to lock my door. I say no and hejust leaves! I went to the desk and demanded a refund and he said hecouldn't help me. It was an awful experience, I would neverrecommend this place to anyone.
Review 101:Nothing
Review 102:The room was way too small The bed u comfortable The shower was tiny with no hot water If we had an option we would've never stayed there
Review 103:Close to subway
Review 104:The shower had hair all over it, and there was sewage work happening in the lobby when we went to check in. Bed was extremely uncomfortable.
Review 105:3 minute walk from the Red line.
Review 106:They lock the door at night and you have to ring the doorbell to get back in. They can take awhile.
Review 107:Cheap room. Close to train station and a cheap parking lot (14$ a day). Went for show at Reggies. Good location. Small room. Was rundown but for half to a third the price of most Chicago rooms worked. Not the kinda place to take someone to impress them though.
Review 108:They my had cable no cable no face towels the shower door wouldn't close all the way water ran on floor my first stay at this hotel was much better.
Review 109:The staff was great.
Review 110:No elevators. Hotel rooms really needs new furniture and be totally remodeled, but this would drive the room prices up.
Review 111:Location of hotel. Fair price for basic lodging. Public CTA trains and buses nearby. Easy walk to neighborhood restaurants. Friendly hotel clerks.
Review 112:Free WiFi was available for about 15 minutes. If WiFi is a priority for you, have an alternate method. Coffee maker in room, but no coffee supplies, asked front desk and said coffee was available in lounge.
Review 113:Location was great for purpose of our stay.
Review 114:Beautiful location! Service was matchless. The staff was very welcoming. My stay was peaceful, surrounded by restaurants and very close to downtown Chicago. I will definitely make my next booking at Chinatown Hotel. The staff was just awesome. Never asked for anything, they just gave me matchless service everyday.
Review 115:The rooms I reserved were not available. I'm a very open minded person, always looking for something unique. Did not find it here. It was embarrassing when I left with my friends. Waist of time...
Review 116:Nothing, refused to stay. Paid the cancelation fee and left.
Review 117:Definitely, Dirtiest hotel I have ever been! - Awful smell! - a lot of Dust! - Dirty clothes (yellow spots of mud)! - Wi-Fi on the 3 floor was not working mostly! - no Elevators.
Review 118:I chose this hotel because of closed distance to McCormick Place.
Review 119:website is erroneous about availability of wifi in the rooms. Staff are rude and very unreasonable I cut short my planned 5 day stay after 1 night. So many other hotels in Chicago at the same price will give much better value for money
Review 120:Nothing at all. The staff were the worst, very rude.
Review 121:Be prepared to haul the luggage up the stairs! Some room latches are broken.
Review 122:location close to mc cormick convention centre and red line train station and hence good connectivity.Good value for money.
Review 123:The room was too hot at night The bed was not very comfortable No fitted sheet on the bed so we had to ask for another sheet Wi-Fi seemed to only work intermittently
Review 124:The price was right Good food within walking distance Train station nearby Room was clean
Review 125:If you want new carpets and towels and bed covers, go somewhere else. If you want to save money and stay near the conference center, this place is basic and inexpensive
Review 126:Location (for walking to conference center), wireless, price was the best, easy access to subway trains and rental bicycles. Close great restaurants.
Review 127:Not very clean environment and no update equipment.
Review 128:Service in front desk is good. Her help will give the guest a guidance to know the surrounding of Chinatown.
Review 129:Dirt, dirt, dirt. I was afraid to take off shoes in my room. Cobwebs everywhere. And I think some of the towels were not laundered after previous guest...
Review 130:Nothing special. Price wasn't to high, quality was horrible. Location was good, but not good enough to compensate.
Review 131:No lift to take your luggage and no help provided. All rooms have to be redone they look ver very old
Review 132:Location was excellent well connected by public transport
Review 133:Staff was very cranky EXTREMELY tiny room Stairway narrow No elevator WiFi wouldn't connect Room cold View of ally Finding parking was difficult, had to circle to block several times. No handicapped parking at all. Sheets wouldn't stay on the bed (they don't use fitted sheets).
Review 134:It was clean Cheap
Review 135:Old, dirty and tired describes this place and the local area is a bit sketchy at night. No elevators that I could see so my 3rd story room was a hike up a bunch of stairs every time. It was cold in Chicago and the room had a busted up oil heater that leaned to the side, it worked but was clearly broken. I felt like a hostel with hotel prices so not really value for money. The guy at reception seemed rude and couldn't be any less welcoming. Spend the extra $$ and get closer to town in a more reputable place.
Review 136:Location to Red Line metro and many Asian restaurants
Review 137:The hotel staff is not very friendly. The guy who made my check-in was rude and laugh at me in my face. When I asked him to fix the wi-fi (which wasn't working), he said that couldn't do nothing.
Review 138:Close to the train station Neighbhorhood with great and cheap foodt
Review 139:-No ice buckets -Bathroom sink dirty even after maid service -Soap rack hanging from shelf, broken -Shower dirty -Light switch in bathroom never been cleaned -Sheets wrinkled -Room heated with space heater on wheels *has to be a fire hazard -Bathroom door never wiped down -Blankets, this is a big one, I thought what was on the bed was a sofa cover, not a blanket. Maid needs lesson on cleaning room and making bed.
Review 140:The one thing I liked was the location. I felt safe, and it was within reasonable time from McCormick Place. Also being in Chinatown it was neat to see the culture there.
Review 141:3rd floor without elevator might bother some guests.
Review 142:Fair price. Covenient location in Chinatown close to the Chinatown station. Bed and bathroom were ok. Friendly staff.
Review 143:staff not welcoming on first day specially the young asian dude with glasses. Even if its a cheap hotel, it would not hurt to be a bit nicer. wifi reception was really bad and the staff offered no help there. narrow stairs considering that there are no lifts
Review 144:close the metra station and bakeries/restaurants nice chinese furniture. maps provided. On the overall it was value for money
