Reviews for Chicago Getaway Hostel

Review 1:Very little but dry because of hit and smelly in bathroom even it was clean :)

Review 2:The hostel was more than I expected. The room was so clean and warm, and the shared bathroom was clean to use! Also, giving away breakfast and letting us to use kitchen were very kindful and nice :) I loved most of everything even little! If I want to come back to Chicago for travel, I definitely book this Chicago getaway hostel!!! :)

Review 3:Bathrooms so far away from room.

Review 4:The young black man who does the graveyard shift was very helpful. We were a group of friends for California visiting for some fun!

Review 5:Fabulous location, large rooms - lots of eateries about, great kitchen facility, breakfasts included, helpful staff, useful map of district..... great to be able to freely access a very good guitar!

Review 6:The women's restroom was so far from our bedroom.

Review 7:Me and my girlfriend stayed there for three days, and the hostel have exceeded our expectations. The room is very comfortable, the staff are very helpful and the breakfast is free.

Review 8:Common bathrooms weren't always well cleaned.

Review 9:The neighborhood is quiet, young and safe. There are two well-known pubs (Kingston Miles and Blues) that every night there are groups who play jazz/blues music at five minutes to walk from the hostel. The hostel provides free ticket for Kingston Miles.

Review 10:Only complaint is the long walk from here to the nearest train station. If you have luggages, it won't be easy.

Review 11:The place feels really nice. We got upgraded from a 4-bed dorm room to a private room for two on the spot and at the same price since the staff didn't know why I couldn't book more days through Booking.com.

Review 12:The bed was quite uncomfortable - you could feel the springs in your back. My flight was cancelled due to an ice storm in Chicago and they still charged me the first night. But it was so cheap I didn't complain.

Review 13:Location in lovely safe residential area near bars, restaurants and transport downtown, though it's not as trendy as Wicker Park/Bucktown where some other hostels are located. I far prefer staying here than downtown as you feel like a local. Lots of common areas.

Review 14:Friendly staff, well organised hostel. After checking out, guests can leave the luggage in the luggage room for free. Free Internet access from computers in the lobby and free printing.

Review 15:The shower room is really tiny, and the breakfast can have more choices rather than just the breads. Everything else is good.

Review 16:The hostel is awesome with very good price for stay. I spend only 70 us dollar for a private room. The staff are helpful, the facilities are good and clean. The location is good and safe. For the price, everything is really good!

Review 17:There was very bad T mobile network connection, Especially in the basement where my room was. Had to be going to the 2nd floor in order to make or receive calls.

Review 18:The staff were very friendly. Loved their breakfast and availability of laundry, soft drinks, coffee and tea making machines within the building.

Review 19:Downstairs really smelt bad, the bathroom toilet didn't flush so if staying downstairs would recommend to get asked to be move upstairs as the hostel is great but that was a massive bummer on my stay.

Review 20:super friendly staff , close transport good free breakfast and awesome kitchen

Review 21:The heating in our room was like a sauna. Wet everywhere.

Review 22:Two siblings travelling. Nice place in a safe neighbourhood. Good breakfast. Fantastic atmosphere. Friendly and helpful staff -if any problem look 4 Tiara, she's great. We had a room with private bathroom. Metro station 10 min walking + bus 5 min walking. Restaurants and bars around.

Review 23:The beds weren't terribly comfortable, which wasn't surprising. Also, with up to 8 people in a room, it's hard to move around in the morning for fear of waking them up. Just the nature of things, I guess.

Review 24:Cute building, good deal, location was within easy walk of restaurants and bus.

Review 25:The smell of the shared bedroom with private bathroom was not that good.

Review 26:The location is the best part of it. Close to the Fullerton red line station and close to the 151 bus that goes toward downtow.

Review 27:15min walking distance to Metro station Bed not made during my 5days stay No Cellphone reception in room (mine was located underground)

Review 28:Great breakfast Friendly staff Fantastic Wifi

Review 29:breakfast options limited, rooms small, bath room sharing, bath room slippers not available.

Review 30:somewhat economical, clean, breakfast included,wi fi and computer staff available, staff courteous and cooperative.

Review 31:Bathrooms and floor of our rooms were very unclean. Fan broken. Asked for a repair of the bad working and VERY noisy heater. Repair was promised, no-one showed up during the 3 days of my stay.

Review 32:Good connection to the city center. Nice lobby, you get what you pay for (reduced rates, so you have to expect reduced quality).

Review 33:Though it's not in dt, but the view is good, and there are some nice restaurants and stores near the hostel. Generally speaking, it worth the price.

Review 34:There were some smell in the restroom but it looked clean. The heater stopped during the night and made the room so cold. The other one is not about the hostel, someone stole my leftover pizza that i put in the labeled box and also bit one bite and left the rest in the box. :(

Review 35:staffs were friendly, nice and helpful. I left my baggage after checking out and came back later. I also asked for shower as i will have another 30 hours traveling and the staff was kind enough to allow me to shower before i left. The private room was comfortable. I will definitely come back here!

Review 36:Noisy bunk beds A little bit far from downtown but very close to the subway (5 min walk)

Review 37:We got to the hostel at 6 am after a long trip and gave us our beds immediately even though check-in wasn't until 3pm. Really appreciated that! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Amazing and complete breakfast. Located in nice and quiet neighborhood.

Review 38:I liked everything.

Review 39:Really big common kitchen, game room, social area. All you can eat breakfast consisting of bagels, DIY waffles, scrambled eggs, fruits (oranges and bananas), toasts, coffee, jam, butter, cream cheese. Staff was super helpful, polite and always with a smile on their faces. Convenient location, just a few blocks away of Fullerton "L" station, quite neighborhood, close to Lincoln Park.

Review 40:I has to pay more because booking didnt let the pyment through so I didnt get the booking price

Review 41:Skydeck passes to buy in the hostel are fastpasses! That was awesome!!!

Review 42:The neighbourhood is very nice residential area with a lot good restaurants, bars and groceries nearby. The subway is very close and it is easy to move around the city!

Review 43:Although nice the beds made it hard to sleep, in a 12 bed dorm and every time someone moved the beds made so much noise it would wake people up.

Review 44:Nice hostel, more like a hotel and not very social. Was very good with good facilities to.

Review 45:The private bedroom and private bathroom we had was not very clean. The floor left dark dirt stains on my kid's socks only after a moment of walking around, there was left over candy remaining in the night stand and a used bar of soap in the bathroom which I hate to say, was either not cleaned after the last guest or hasn't been cleaned for some time.

Review 46:Great location in a very cool neighborhood with tons of history and character.

Review 47:I left my silver bracelet from a trip to Peru on the sink, and it wasn't found and I was the last person that occupied the room.

Review 48:Courtesy and location.

Review 49:Full service faculty. Bike rentals, discount tickets for tours. Good breakfasts. The staff are super awesome! Walking distance to some great blues!!

Review 50:Nothing

Review 51:Location was good , nice neighbourhood. Great restaurants and bars nearby. We had a problem with our mattress the springs were broken so it sunk in but when we mentioned it to the front desk they had it replaced that day. Great service and good breakfast included

Review 52:The sharing bath facilities weren't keep clean enough, and there weren't any soap. There were quite chilly in the room.

Review 53:The hostel is located in nice green residential area. The breakfasts were wonderful. The stuff was very friendly.

Review 54:the shower area needs mats to prevent slips , i did not like t hat they ran out of bowls and cups so we had to wait a long time for our morning coffee- this did not happen last time but i guess we woke up later...

Review 55:safe, welcoming, excellent breakfast, warm showers, very plain but nice private rooms. I loved that they had a keurig setup for coffee or cocoa for only 75 cents so bring your quarters...location is beautiful little neighborhood about 15 to 20 min stroll to the nearest train or L.

Review 56:It was very dirty, room was small, bed uncomfortable, reminded me of a jail cell. Sketchy cliental, and public bathrooms were downstairs and very dirty and gross. I wouldn't put a dog in there.

Review 57:nothing, it was the worst hotel I ever stayed in.

Review 58:Very noisy. Doors need oil. All the doors squeeze when opened and closed. We had a room next to bathroom and whenever somebody enters our room or bathroom we would wake up.

Review 59:Clean And friendly atmosphere.

Review 60:The bathroom ventilator in the ground floor was so loud that you could hear it over several floors, and also in my room (with closed windows). When I asked at the reception whether it was possible to turn it lower, the (very friendly) girl first said yes. Then her colleague said "no, it's not possible." Then I said, "yes, there's a switch", then he said, "yes, but it is already at its lowest." Then I said, "oh no, it's actually running at full speed." His answer was, "yes, it has to run at full speed, since it ventilates the ground floor for the whole wing of the building." Now, I understand that ventilating larger buildings and keeping moisture out of hostels is nontrivial, but please: Take your customers seriously, ok?

Review 61:One of the cleanest hostels I have seen, particularly for its size.

Review 62:Men's bathroom was up a floor from our room.

Review 63:The hostel is in a great location, close to transit, lots of cafes, in a nice, safe neighborhood. The room was comfortable, breatfast was filling and well managed, wifi worked well. Chicago has long needed a hostel like this!

Review 64:The room was crowded for two people. Breakfast was poorly organized and only adequate.

Review 65:Very competitive price with other downtown Chicago hotels. centrally located and within easy reach of the places we wanted to visit.

Review 66:- the room was not clean - bedding (prettyraddled)

Review 67:- great ambience (backpackers and travelers everywhere) - breakfast - not to much to choose but they have waffles! - great, calm neighbourhood - 10 min walk to subway

Review 68:No bath accessories (soap, shampoos etc.), no hairdryer. Some shower rooms didn't work. Not too clean. Our room for 2 looked like a room in dorm.

Review 69:Very nice and calm district, pretty nice staff

Review 70:Having to share bathrooms are never much fun especially when people have dirty habits. But give the staff their due they did their best to keep the place clean. Our room was viewless but then we only slept there so it wasn't a big deal as most of our time was spent with the Triathlon and some sight seeing

Review 71:Make no mistake this is budget accommodation . However the location was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Our bed was clean and comfortable. The breakfasts are D.I.Y but adequate and the fresh fruit was most welcome. Definitely good value for money

Review 72:Amazing, it was close to Lincoln park and the zoo, just a few steps and also the Michigan lake and by train a few minutes to Downtown, also the neighborhood is beautiful, many restaurants

Review 73:That slept very uncomfortable. I told staff that my room was too cold and they told me it would get warmer(it never did) and gave me another blanket.

Review 74:The location was nice

Review 75:A bit expensive, but that's the norm all over the USA

Review 76:Very good facilities, excelente breakfast, great staff! Actually everything you need in a great hostel.

Review 77:Only complaint is the towels. Not expecting anything fancy, but these were rough enough to scale a fish and didn't do a great job of drying.

Review 78:Clean and not too much noise. Nice neighborhood. A top-notch establishment for the budget traveler.

Review 79:Bunk beds could be a bit sturdier but wasn't really an issue.

Review 80:We were happy to find this hostel for half the price of hotels on the area and with better amenities than most 3 star hotels. Some rooms seemed a little run down (an old building) but were clean, beds comfy enough, bed linen and towels included. Showers in good working order and cleaned every day. Excellent location on a quiet residential street near the lake and public transport easy to use. The staff were very helpful and good breakfast served every morning. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again!

Review 81:My reservation included a bedroom with bathroom, and at the time was made available one without bathroom.

Review 82:The staff is extremely helpful. Location is great, near to the Red Line Subway. It's clean and safe.

Review 83:Cockroach in the room, room in the basement not clean and quite scary! No plugs and old lockers. Just avoid this place. For 40 dollars... u can have luxurious hostel in south beach

Review 84:Almost nothing- except maybe the breakfast which is OK.

Review 85:Poor cleanliness. Quite far from downtown but is still a nice area. Wouldnt store my bag even though I was returning the next day for another booking so cancelled 2nd booking as easier to get somewhere near downtown rather then drag my bag back & forth.

Review 86:I have stayed before & must admit last time was much better. This time the hostel seemed dirty, they wasn't enough pots for everyone at breakfast, the pot washer was just rinsing them each day & they had traces of old food on them each day from yesterday which is gross! Very little space in dorm rooms between beds. I would say it is ok here in off peak when it is cheaper but in peak months it is very over priced! I Prob wouldn't return again as the dirtiness made me feel a little ill. Thanks anyway

Review 87:Although my single room was very nice, the bed was not very confortable (old mattress) and the noise of the AC sometimes very boring.

Review 88:The staff, the atmosphere, the overall cleanliness, the nice location (close to bars and restaurants).

Review 89:The bathrooms were kind of uncomfortable, I just wish there was be a bench and a place to leave your stuff while you shower, just kinda hard to get ready in there.

Review 90:First you go in to this nice lobby with comfy chairs and a touchscreen TV with all sorts of info. Once you get to the counter the staff is overly nice, ready to feed you with all the info you need. If you get there early they'll put your bags in a safe room so you can go out with no worries. Then you go to your room and it's nice and cool, you have your own outlet and lamp. The mattress is very comfortable and clean. There's a locker for you to put you personal items, bring a lock! If you don't they sell them at the front desk. The guys in my room just left all their stuff lying around so I guess it's safe. When you wake up there's free breakfast, which is good, you'll get the basics, if you want something more fancy there are places close you can go to like McDonalds, Subway or a Whole Foods market. The train and the buses stops are very close, it's easy to get there, and it feels safe, I walked around at night and it was fine. For the price I got it's a great deal, would definitely stay there again.

Review 91:Wifi in rooms a bit patchy but fine in main areas. About a 30min tube/bus downtown

Review 92:Awesome neighborhood with great restaurants, bars and nice houses. Free breakfast.

Review 93:Fabulous find. I was only there for one night, but I wish I'd given myself a bit more time since the facilities were quite comfy. Great location, in the midst of a college so there's always life and it feels safe. Very stylish room, pristine bathrooms, not at all the typical image of a hostel. They had loads of free events if you didn't have anything planned & were super prepared to help you if you were in town for an event (I was there for a music festival and they had directions ready). Price was a steal, all things considered.

Review 94:You need at least 10 minutes walking to reach the subway, red line.

Review 95:The patio outside was pretty cool. Than the location is super calm and peaceful, perfect for the a good sleep. The area around the hostel is safe, with lot of beautiful houses.

Review 96:The staff here could not be more helpful- they are wonderful and will go out of their way to help you. The location is great; the area is very safe, I travelled alone and never felt threatened. Plus the hostel is a 10 minute walk from the subway which is very convenient. I can't think of any negatives to say; I would definitely book this hostel again.

Review 97:Two little things: $28 dollars to park per night (but hey, thats chicago) and the room that we got (room for 4 with private bathroom) was quite smaller than we expected because the picture made it look bigger. But it was comfortable and a good size for us since we stayed for just a night.

Review 98:Simple yet had everything we needed. We brought extra blankets, as we had heard that they only give you one sheet and one thin blanket. Glad we did! But you can also change the temperature of your room to your liking so we would have lived :p coffee was wonderful - even my puerto rican friends loved it! (and they are particular about coffee ;) staff was friendly. Very comfortable environment, had conputers for public use, tv room, coffee you can buy after breakfast hours for 75 cents. This is the first time ive taken time to actually write a review about anything online, but there were no real causes for complaints - what i will write as for what i "didnt like" are more of a heads up!

Review 99:The AC machine outside our room was very noisy but we asked for another quiet room and the staff was very nice.

Review 100:Free BBQ for labor day, full breakfast (eggs, waffles, bagels...), very well situated, close to metro, nice neighborhood, free parking on Fullerton street.

Review 101:We had a private room with a double bed and the mattress was very thin, we could feel the springs in it. We didn't lose too much sleep because of it, but I think a slightly more comfortable mattress would go a long way!

Review 102:Breakfast was included and not your standard toast and cereal hostel breakfast...scrambled eggs, bagels, fresh fruit and hot cereal options in addition. Location was great, the facilities were top notch.

Review 103:Not a very good sleep, noisy AC unit too close to the bed. Expansive for being a hostel.

Review 104:Good location, close to metro, very nice staff, lot of services and activities. On Sunday morning we got waffles for breakfast!

Review 105:There was a closed door in our room (215), theoretically it could be unlocked and there could be some more space in the room.

Review 106:Everything was great, amazing place, perfect wi-fi. Everything that hostel should be.

Review 107:Just the bunk beds were short.

Review 108:The location was great to everything and places I wanted to see and do. The kitchen was awesome! The staff were very informative and courteous. The daily group events were fun!

Review 109:Toilets very poorly cleaned. Reported it twice to reception but came up against indifference on both occasions. Contracted staff for cleaning and household duties are not part of the team. The location is far from the city area and food at reasonable costs is difficult to find in the area.

Review 110:Location in an above average suburban setting.

Review 111:in some of the rooms you can hear whats happening in the next one :/

Review 112:very confortable, nice people, overall clean, good location, lots of restaurants around, good transportation near by,not far from the city

Review 113:I got athletes foot from the shower which was backed up from hair. Our door wouldn't close all the way and a drunk guy came in at 4 am and slept in the women's room when he found the door open. The staff fixed the door but by the next night it still wouldn't close all the way unless you leaned on it. Basement was stuffy.

Review 114:Great location.

Review 115:I sometimes find a lot of hair in the shared bathroom sink. I understand it's a shared bathroom but I have seen hostels that dont have this problem at all, so this can be an improvement for the future.

Review 116:The services and amenities werr good. Staff were very helpful. The bed was comfy and i liked that it had a nightlight and sockets for each bed.

Review 117:Bed , value for money , Wi-Fi , Broken elevator

Review 118:Neighborhood was nice. Location . Bathroom facilities were really good for hostels. Kitchen was impressive. Friendly

Review 119:The shared bathrooms and showers could be cleaned more often, a renovation of these facilities wouldn't hurt either.

Review 120:Staff is very friendly and helpful, location is in a very nice and safe area. not far away from subway station and shops & restaurants. Relaxed atmosphere at the hostel, the common kitchen and dining area are fantastic to meet other travellers and you get to store your own food which was especially convenient for me. They also have a laundromat in the basement and computers and printer you can use for free.

Review 121:Wifi didn't work in rooms and was very slow in lobby during evening hours when many people were on it. It did work well early in the morning (7 am). Parking was expensive (doubled the cost of my bed for the night).

Review 122:The staff was super friendly and helpful. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. Neighbourhood is nice and safe. Location is good. Far walk from Millennium Park area but there is a Transit stop a short walk from Hostel and the train is only about 10 min to the area.

Review 123:I was billed for the stay in April. My trip was not until July. My planschanged and I needed to change the reservation in May. There was noavailability to change the reservation or cancel the reservation.

Review 124:Waffles sound great for breakfast but how about some pam so I dont have to chisel them free.

Review 125:Staff was friendly and helpful with finding places. Fresh towels easy to get.

Review 126:There's no place to charge my phone near our bed, but all other beds have. This is super inconvenient and unfair

Review 127:The breakfast and common facilities are great! The location is wonderful, the whole building looks like in the middle of a garden (:

Review 128:The bunk bed squeaks terribly. Room was next to the shared bath area so we can hear the showers n flushes . Toaster was not working.. long que to make toasts. Hostel entrance has steps that is not a good choice if u hv many luggages nor with wheelchairs.

Review 129:location n very helpful desk staff. I wld like to recognize Jason who was on duty when we checked in. He gave alot of info on how to move around n things to do Chicago since it was our 1st visit here. Assisted us with room on the same floor as we had many big luggages.

Review 130:No WC and possibility for washing hands in the room.

Review 131:As a hostel it is great, really nice people, arround 30 minutes to Downtown by bike or the red line

Review 132:No TV in private rooms.

Review 133:Decent location, 10 minute walk to train station, and 10 minute walk to Lincoln Park, 5 minutes from lots of shops, bars and food joints. Very clean hostel. Well staffed.

Review 134:There was nothing I disliked about the hostel everything was excellent.

Review 135:Love the staff very friendly, close to where I needed to be. The beds were nice, breakfast was good, over all friendly hostel couldn't ask for anything else.

Review 136:On every floor are showers, the one for the guys was just a corridor away, the one for the ladies was on the other side of the house - faaaar away.

Review 137:Clean, nice staff, thinking of a hostel it was an amazing breakfast.

Review 138:No complaints at all!

Review 139:Loved everything about this hostel! Staff are so friendly and helpful, the hostel itself is so clean, comfortable and modern. And it smells like vanilla cupcakes all the time (seriously). The free breakfast is the best I've had at any hostel - waffles, cereal, fruit, toast, coffee. I'd 100% stay here again.

Review 140:The cleanness is Ok with an old stained carpet smell. I stayed in the 3rd floor and the floor had one toilet/shower room for men & women. There was just two toilets with one not operating during my stay. The rooms are very bare bones; a bed and desk. Breakfast is ample and self serve so be aggressive! The breakfast room is noisy withe foosball & pool table plopped in the center.

Review 141:The location is great in Lincoln Park in a nice block.
