Reviews for California Inn Barstow

Review 1:The picture showing a newer building is a bit misleading as it is only the office and lobby. The actual rooms are in an older 60s/70s era motel, though renovated.

Review 2:The California Inn had a great breakfast available, friendly staff and very reasonable rates. Though the motel is an older property, the rooms are renovated to modern standards and are pleasant.

Review 3:Very quiet and well-apponted. Has a roomy eating area with a continental breakfast included. A nice restaurant next door for breakfast also, and a vegetable market across the street. Situated in a quiet area for walking the dog. Easy drive into Monterey and Pacific Grove.

Review 4:One in our group has a scooter and no entrance/exit could be handled by him without another person with him. In other words, not ADA compliant.

Review 5:The room was comfortable and the beds were not worn out - not rock hard, just not saggy. The breakfast choices were good. Would definitely stay again.

Review 6:Thin walls and a couple above us decided to perform bed aerobics from 2am-6am. Odd smell can't quite place it. Not exactly clean or dirty somewhere in between.

Review 7:Decent, apparently all Barstow hotels are terrible?

Review 8:N/A

Review 9:The room was in very good condition -- newer wall paper and carpet -- and was very clean. The breakfast was superior to most in motels in this price range because it included scrambled eggs and sausage in addition to self-serve waffles, cereals, juice, coffee, toast, and fruit. The reception staff was also friendly.

Review 10:Noisey neighbors woke us up early. Not much sound insulation between rooms. Breakfast was just typical hotel breakfast fare. Expected better breakfast based on booking description and photos provided.

Review 11:Convenient location. Beautiful mountain views. Great value for price. Accepted pets.

Review 12:The only issue I had with the hotel is I had terrible allergies while in the room. We were traveling with our dogs, so I'm sure we were put in a room usually used for pets. I've never had such an allergic reaction in a pet-friendly hotel before.

Review 13:The hotel is very inexpensive, is centrally located near what we wanted to visit, and is set up very well for what it is. We would stay there again.

Review 14:Gym needs work. Breakfast was not very good. Also they use disposable cutlery and crockery which is very wasteful.

Review 15:Location and price. Internet was good.

Review 16:amazing spacious room for 4, clean and quiet. it's really worth the money , for $56 we had a massive room with 2 queen beds and breakfast included!!! Really satisfied with this one.

Review 17:The hot water in the shower fluctuated between warm (not hot!) and cold. The towels felt like sandpaper. At breakfast the waffle maker had waffle mix stuck to it and when I reached for a fork to try and pry it off there weren't any. The front desk clerk told my boyfriend that they didn't have any more.

Review 18:Nothing. We've stayed at the Ramada down the street but thought we'd give California Inn Barstow a try. Next time we're travelling through Barstow we'll go back to the Ramada.

Review 19:Best breakfast ever in a small hotel, very clean and very friendly staff. Many restaurant near by and IHOP across the hotel. We really enjoy our stay there!

Review 20:On our way to Las Vegas. The room is spacious and bed is comfortable. Very close to supermarket and foot outlet. Breakfast is a bonus however could do a bit better with more varieties.

Review 21:Very quiet room, despite the railroad in Barstow. Clean, enormous room. Strong internet, friendly front desk, typical motel breakfast-I just have coffee and some of those rubbery eggs. Lots of parking. And a place to walk my dog :)

Review 22:I didn't find anything that I would consider to be a negative as far as this place is concerned.

Review 23:Drove straight from Seattle Washington to Barstow California where we were going to stay at the California Inn. The people there were very friendly very accommodating and we were able to get a room earlier than expected. Would recommend this place to anyone traveling.

Review 24:We liked everything, the hotel had everything we were looking for: goos breakfast, comfortable beds, bathtub. The room was nice and cosy and we stayed there even a liitle bit more than we were planning. Thank you so much, we had a really good rest!

Review 25:Hotel was an older property & breakfast was just a "normal" selection.. when I was there.

Review 26:Clean comfortable room; Well lit, secure parking; Close to the highway & many food possibilities; Good price.

Review 27:The bed was not comfortable and the room was cold. The halls smelled of stale cigarette smoke.

Review 28:I like the prompt service and hot breakfast. The room was clean.

Review 29:Decor may be a little dated, but the room was clean, the staff friendly and helpful, and it was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in at a hotel. Wifi and breakfast included. Great deal! We'll be back!

Review 30:Cable didn't work while we were there but we don't have cable at home so that wasn't necessary for us. Nothing fancy, but we needed a place to stay and we slept well.

Review 31:I liked the price, with free breakfast included. Location was very easy to get to and the staff were friendly. You get what you pay for, but this was a decent deal.

Review 32:I honestly loved this place. It was a great price for a great stay. My husband and I were just stopping to stay the night in Barstow on our way home from Grand Canyon but we really thought everything was great. The place was clean, it had a king size bed, a bathtub, a desk for me to work at and a sliding glass door for easy access in and out of the room! My favorite part though was breakfast. Rarely these days do you stay somewhere for a good price and get an actual breakfast. They had EVERYTHING. Will be staying again!

Review 33:The "Deluxe" breakfast wasn't deluxe at all. Despite the bed being good and the room quiet I couldn't sleep. I cant pinpoint it but something's wrong here.

Review 34:Good value for the money, well equipped rooms. Quiet rooms a bit further away from the street.

Review 35:An elevator especially for older people would be a bonus but is only two floors.

Review 36:Great breakfast, efficient staff, comfortable room, easy parking, free wifi, value for money. We can highly recommend.

Review 37:This is a perfect one night stop. I have used them multiple times for a one night stop and it has always been value for your money. There is an IHOP next door and a Chevron gas station right outside the exit from the Inn. Breakfast is nothing special but at least you can eat something before you head out without having to search for anything separately. Will stay again.

Review 38:the staff was very friendly and helpful. the breakfast was substantial and was refilled up until a half hour from posted end time. our faucet broke and we were immediately moved to another room, and there was someone sent to the room for repairs.

Review 39:The night manager was fine but the morning manager was not happy to be there.

Review 40:Convenient location just off the highway. Convenient to gas stations, bars, restaurants. Breakfast was OK. WiFi good.

Review 41:second trip. Empty cereal for breakfast and fruit there was some coffee and waffels we didn't go hungry

Review 42:things were good and just for one night is satisfiying

Review 43:We were a bit nervous at first because the initial room we were given had definitely been smoked in and it smelled quite bad. The clerk came within minutes of our call and moved us to a fresh-smelling room right away so we were completely satisfied. Was a little disappointed that there was no yogurt at breakfast. I think this is the 1st place I've stayed at that offered breakfast and did not have it. Not a deal-breaker however.

Review 44:The room was very nice and we were glad to have the fridge so we could freeze our ice packs and keep our food cold before leaving the next day. The bed was very comfortable and everything worked perfectly. The breakfast was definitely adequate and the coffee was good.

Review 45:Functional, but run down and poorly equipped. Windows onto carpark meant we were very exposed and had to keep the curtains drawn, the towel rail was broken, there was only one chair in the room (for 2 people)...

Review 46:The star rating must have been faked by the owners. No more than 2 stars out of 5 or 5 on a 10 point scale. The free breakfast ran out of food at 9 am. The bathroom is small and old. The rooms are ok but need updating. Carpet is old. Pool was freezing and there is no hot tub. Only one ice machine for the whole place. Its like a Motel 6.

Review 47:The bed was fine. Interior hallway.

Review 48:Some people were talking below our room for a while which kept our kids awake for a bit.

Review 49:Breakfast was great-waffles, eggs, cereal, sausage, etc. Rooms were large and included an extra sink in the bed area. Rooms were recently remodeled-was impressed for the price.

Review 50:Nothing all good, staff were also friendly to talk to.

Review 51:Good location. There is a railway track in the vicinity but this hotel is further away so good location and I'm a light sleeper! Happy

Review 52:Staff was very pleasant, professional, and helpful. The room was spacious, and well equipped with refrigerator and microwave (although I used neither). The hotel was easy to find, and convenient to other services in Barstow. The rate was low, and the value was high. The only negative was that I did not see (or need) an elevator to get to the second floor. If I ever need to stay in Barstow again, I will stay here again.

Review 53:While the room was small the bed was comfortable and it was nice having a door in the hallway and another one leading outdoors. The pool was nice too.

Review 54:The hallways smelled bad and the bed was uncomfortable. The breakfast was just okay, but had a good selection.

Review 55:Easy to find and friendly service. They had a decent shower.

Review 56:I would've rated the hotel a 10 if the pool had really been heated otherwise an exceptional deal.

Review 57:Very nice, clean motel at a great location and a great price. The staff was very friendly and professional. Very nice pool, unfortunately not heated but OK once you got in. And the breakfast was quite good.

Review 58:The price of the room the bathroom was just horrible in the room the a/c in the room was bad tv was old didn't like the surrounding area.

Review 59:The staff was ok.

Review 60:Very disappointing compared to previous stay. Room was small and shabby; needed renovation. Staff was unfriendly and unhelpful.

Review 61:Bed was comfortable and room was clean.

Review 62:Nothing

Review 63:Big rooms, hotel has ice maker and cheap vendor machine. You can also wash clothes for 2 bucks. Breakfast is good. Best value for money in California.

Review 64:The chemical stink in the room to mask previous smokers did all that more. It was very overpowering. I was too damn exhausted to complain but was asleep quickly anyhow. The breakfast sausage was pretty creepy but you don't have to eat those., or maybe you do....

Review 65:I liked the horrible new paint job that was in progress while I was there. The lime green walls with the fushia, blue and god knows what else in the wall to wall carpets. It was all very busy and looked horrible or good I thought. Most people especially families may be put off by this. It was so bad it was good! A decent Continental breakfast too, it did the trick. The room had a small balcony overlooking a nice pool. Beyond the pool to the North you could see rugged Mojave desert peaks off in the sunny distance, not noticed my everyone but I noticed. Later I dragged the desk chair out onto the balcony where I enjoyed the night stars and air for several hours. To me it's the little things like that that are so cool but hey it's just a chair and a balcony. All in all a good value and it worked for me, a decent nights sleep

Review 66:The light fixture near the door that is triggered by motion would notstay off - even when turned off by the switch. The maintenance man hadto tremove the light bulb. Also, the carpet and the furniture are very, very worn.THE WORST WAS WHEN THE GRAB BAR OVER THE SOAP DISH/LEDGE OF THE SHOWER SLIPPED FORWARD AND EXPOSED THICK BLACK MOLD GROWING ON THE PART OF THE BAR THAT HAD BEEN HIDDEN BEHIND THE SHELL OF THE SHOWER WALL (BUT IN THE OPEN WHEN THE BAR IS MOVED FORWARD). THERE IS NO MISTAKING THAT ATTENTION TO CLEANLINESS IS ONLY SUPERFICIAL. THE MANAGER ON DUTY WAS VERY RESPONSIVE; SHE CAME TO THE ROOM AND TOOK A PHOTO OF THE MOLDY GRAB BAR. I DO BELIEVE THAT SHE WAS GOING TO HAVE THE SITUATION CORRECTERD.

Review 67:I liked the space of the room and I liked seeing roses and the mountainsfrom my sliding patio door.

Review 68:Everything closed by 9am, therefore we could only find fast food after 8.45. There appeared to be quite a poverty problem in the town - lots of Pawn shops, cheque cashing (maybe it's proximity to Vegas?) and we saw a "lady" of the night on the corner of the road.

Review 69:Good choices for breakfast. Easy to find (didn't need a map of the town from reception as there was just the one street!), therefore local knowledge wasn't tested.

Review 70:the location is not far from highway, but not to close for noise to become problem. The room was quite clean and comfy, breakfast was usual, but enough to start a day. Overal, quite good value for money, recommended.

Review 71:The coffee...sorry

Review 72:The ladies did a wonderful job keeping the room fresh...the breakfast was a great feature. Thanks for a good experience I will be up again soon. Will also recommend to friends and family.

Review 73:The Influx internet service is awful and not dpendable. shuts down with no notice. Very confusing to log on. Always needed a staff member to log on for me. Only reason I will never stay there again when I need internet access.

Review 74:cleancomfortable room and facilities. Helpful;and friendly staff.

Review 75:The breakfast room struggled to accommodate all the diners - pitch up early or late to get a seat!

Review 76:Great room and excellent pool and outside area. One of the cheapest places we stayed in the US and we were surprised to find it was a really nice place. Quiet with big rooms.

Review 77:If only the pillows had been a litter softer and 3 instead of 2 per bed.

Review 78:The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The price was excellent for the value of the room. The breakfast was good

Review 79:nothing to report

Review 80:it was situated right on Route 66 2 good eating places beside and across the road Units back off the street and very quiet 2 accesses off ground floor unit

Review 81:Breakfast. I hate scrambled eggs from powder. Sausages look greenish and mushroom sauce is horrible. Coffee same bad as everywhere in US. But bagels with Cream cheese are OK.

Review 82:Room was spacious and clean. There's a place outside where you can sit and enjoy the view on the pool. Laundry service is available. Wi-Fi works fine. Staff is friendly and helpful. There are few restaurants around.

Review 83:Cannot fault this hotel, we've travelled around & stayed in 7 hotels on this trip and this is overall by far the best. Huge room, had everything needed, good pool, car park, fantastic breakfast, laundry facilities and was walking distance to restaurants

Review 84:Lock on patio door not great, luckily we were upstairs.

Review 85:Good location for us, huge room. Comfy bed, good choice at breakfast, short walk to Dennys for a great burger for dinner. For the price you pay what more can you ask for?

Review 86:It smelled old inside and the decor could use some updating. The security/locks didn't seem very safe. They were out dated and needed to be fixed.

Review 87:The hotel was easy to locate and get in and out of. Staff was very friendly. The breakfast was to packed to eat there so I don't know how it was however it seemed like the guests enjoyed it.

Review 88:the cleaning chemicals are harsh and the toiletries and actually horrible and little packets that are hardly enough. although a older a hotel it is well kept and the staff friendly. oh and the harsh lighting.... harsh.

Review 89:The HBO signal was not working. There was a snag with the credit card reader, but I didn't mind paying in cash.

Review 90:I was towing my Musclecar, and I liked that the facilities were pretty secure with fence all around. One way in and out of the parking lot. It is a convenient location with IHOP right next door. Free secure wifi. Breakfast included bichirs and gravy, eggs, sausage, coffee, and cereal selection.

Review 91:Breakfast consisting of only low-fiber, high fat/sugar products. Fresh fruit and wholegrain bread could make an easy improvement.

Review 92:Relaxed and quiet, but also efficient hide-away

Review 93:Air conditioner off in room till our arrival in 100+ temps. Small bugs come in - we assume through the ac - we found them dead in the bed with us when we awoke.

Review 94:Friendly staff and convenient location

Review 95:Too much air freshener in the hallways. I was SO glad it wasn't like that in the room.

Review 96:This place felt so cozy! It has a great energy to it. The room was HUGE, and comfortable. Having a fridge and microwave was a great bonus. The bed was so comfortable that I slept through the free breakfast so I can't comment on that.

Review 97:barstow is not the prettiest of towns, but for a stopover to sleep its good. the fitness room air conditioning did not work by the way.

Review 98:It was on the way to LA, quiet and clean. Good breakfast. Close to restos and shops. Spacious and clean. We liked it.

Review 99:Breakfast was only until 9 am and minimal. There was a maintenance person screaming all afternoon at co-workers and people in thepool.

Review 100:Rooms were satisfactory for the price. Last time we stayed at a different location and we will probably go back there next time - worth the extra $ 30.

Review 101:The toilet handle was unattached. Had to reach in the water to flushtoilet. We had just driven 8 hrs and was exhausted so did not callmaintenance until in the am. Was disappointed as a repeat customer, the price had gone up so much. Was there in April it was $49; June$59; now $69. Will look around for one more in our budget range - Justwanted to rest.

Review 102:As a repeat guest, we liked the convenience of the location. Thebreakfast was a plus too.

Review 103:This hotel is too cheap to run the air conditioning in the lobby, breakfast room or any of the hallways. The day we arrived it was 112 degrees. They had not even turned on the window unit in our room for us to arrive. It took until 9 PM that night before we were even cooled down enough to get comfortable. Every time you walked out of your room, you were hit by interior air of about 98 degrees in the hallways. Also had trouble with their key cards not working the doors into the building and the guests had to keep walking around the building to find another door that worked. I hated everything about this hotel. The staff was not friendly, and the free breakfast was only fair quality.

Review 104:I've stayed at the California Inn 3 times and frankly this will be the only place I stay while in Barstow. Each time I have stayed the staff was always courteous, friendly and very accomodating. The rooms are very clean and everything works. For the value this place can't be beat.

Review 105:Wasn't happy to find bugs in the bed in the morning, in my hair. There were several live & dead ones at the base of the sliding door to the balcony. We mentioned to the person at the front desk in the morning.

Review 106:Enjoyed the restaurant across the street

Review 107:the noise of the ac

Review 108:Nice motel. as soon as you entry the lobby there is a nice parfume that follows you into your room. very welcoming. Rooms are very large, clean and full of details and confort; fridge , microwave and coffee making facility, iron and ironboard. small openair swimming pool. Ample parking. The hotel offers also a rich breakfast including fresh fruit and hot options

Review 109:Nothing.

Review 110:Big, clean, comfortable rooms. Sports channels on TV. Swimming pool was great. Lots of local places to eat. Nearby Drive-In movie theatre we all really enjoyed. Great value for money, the best on our trip.

Review 111:nothing!

Review 112:best motel on our 3 weeks trip! great staff, fantastic breakfast for a continantel great pool, comfortable rooms (large!) and beds, lots of restaurants and a grocery store only steps away, everything was perfect!

Review 113:Very nice and friendly staff. They opened the pool just for our kids when we arrived late and the pool was closed. My 13 year old boy forgot his iPad at the hotel but the cleaner took care of it and they emailed us. I would easily stay at this hotel again.

Review 114:Not enough room to sit for breakfast. Too many groups chose to sit and chat long after the breakfast was finished while other people were standing around .

Review 115:Convenience and pet friendly

Review 116:Man, what else can you ask; we staid few days before in a Hilton suites, and the breakfast of California Inn is fairly comparable in quality and quantity. Only two hours from las vegas, on the way to Calico.

Review 117:Tired looking furniture but fine for our needs.

Review 118:Good stopover location on route 66. Arrived late evening so only place open nearby to eat was a fast food place but was fine.

Review 119:Not really a bad experience but the towels were small and rough. The air conditioner worked fine but it was very loud and we finally had to turn it off so we could sleep.

Review 120:Our room was very comfortable and there were plenty of tables and cabinets to put things on. The shower was great! The breakfast was very good, as well.

Review 121:Would be nice if coffee was available throughout the day. Otherwise a nice stay.

Review 122:The centralized location. Breakfast variety was good. Maid staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 123:The only ice machine was outside on the ground level patio. My particular room had a stained carpet and just looked dirty. However, the bathroom and furniture were well maintained.

Review 124:It was fun staying in an old hotel. The Spanish decor throughout the hotel, including the rooms, was a nice change from the usual chain motels. The old fashioned elevator was a kick! The Italian restaurant is accessible through the lobby as well as from the street. They do give you a ten percent discount for several restaurants in town as well as their own.

Review 125:The carpet was filthy! Walking around in white socks soon turned almost black on the bottoms of our socks. One of my kids walked barefoot and I showed her my socks. They were both disgusted at what they saw. We also had a fiver ute issue with the cooler, it didn't work for a little while. It was 103* outside so the interior was very warm. But after we got it started it was very cool the rest of our overnight stay.

Review 126:The proximity of food and convenience stores.

Review 127:U- din't have ramps for wheel chairs by room 103. how ever u- didhave them as u- enter the office.. I had a walker and a wheel chair. Myson had to push me all the way from the dining area.

Review 128:We go to Barstow (my birth place) one a year. Stayed @ other, motels. But of all of then the Barstow Inn has been the best of all. I am 90.u-r- bath room was "AWESOME" had grab bars. It was just my sonand I that stayed @ u-r- place is the best in Barstow, next time we willstay more days, (wish u- had senior discounts on person like me on S.s,

Review 129:barstow is a dead and quite scary city: either lots of bums, or deadly empty streets. Most of companies/stores closed. Awful place, isn't worth a visit ever.

Review 130:cool breakfast nice personnel good wifi
