Reviews for San Simeon Lodge

Review 1:The rooms are a little dated and not well insulated. The water is not very good but that is typical of coastal locations. They provided bottled water for the coffee maker in the room.

Review 2:The price and location were great. Staff were friendly and efficient.

Review 3:The room was dated, could do with refurbishment and a good clean. Quite noisy however. Water was not drinkable and we weren't advised of this - had a terrible smell and awful taste.

Review 4:Location was good - on Highway 1 near Hearst Castle and the Sea Elephants. Could hear the beach from the room. Bed was spacious and comfortable. Good parking.

Review 5:Excellent value for money- really nice room considering the price. Really good pitt stop if you're driving the PCH. A choice of different restaurants all in walking distance. And plenty of parking.

Review 6:When viewing online they have no pet deposit, which is why I chose them, bit upon check in, was charged $15.00. Also for the money rooms were small. Coffeemaker was nonfunctional. Tiny refrigerator.

Review 7:Location in reference to attractions and restaurants.

Review 8:The mold smell of our room that we put up with for the first night only because we arrived to late to complain, but did not sleep well because of the order and the bed very uncomfortable!

Review 9:The fact that we were moved out of our mold smelling room into a larger one after one night of pure hellish smell! and the room that staff moved us to for our last night was 100% better!

Review 10:Beds uncomfortable, smell in the room, broken heater with strangest noises. Do NOT eat in the nearby cafe, the food is not tasty at all, but costs like a gourmet restaurant.

Review 11:Location. Close to ocean.

Review 12:I wish the restaurant was open a little later. by the time I checked in I didn't have enough time to eat there.

Review 13:I could hear the ocean from my room and liked that there was a restaurant on the property.

Review 14:The room smelled musty and/or smokey and even leaving windows open to air it out didn't help. There was a squished bloody dead bug on the back of the door. The bed was stiff as a board, very uncomfortable.

Review 15:Good location close to Hearst castle and beautiful views from the property.

Review 16:Great place to rest when you are traveling to San Francisco - Big Sur road. Cheap but very nice place - nice garden, rooms, clean!:) And Tribute to Elvis in karaoke bar was awesome!!!

Review 17:Nice and quite and it is always been clean and a well organized lodge. You have everything there for everyone to enjoy. Restaurant, sport bar and a friendly staff. I have been coming here for the last ten years. I have never have had a problem.

Review 18:Staff at restaurant and bar was extremely helpful and friendly. One waitress went out of her way to make a ginger and lemonade drink for my husband who was sick and gave me some complimentary crackers to take back to the room.

Review 19:Better to go to Cambria to have dinner and breakfast (10 km from San Simeon) than in the hostel restaurant.

Review 20:Pretty views to the Pacific Ocean. It has swimming pool and small fitness center. Free parking. Very good price in comparison with other hostels.

Review 21:I think they need to work on the cleanliness a little bit. I found spider webs where the ice maker is, and also the screens of the bathroom windows have to be washed.

Review 22:The staff is excellent. Joel is a very nice person, always willing to help and very polite.

Review 23:The price was great! Awesome deal! Such a good location too. Clean rooms, friendly staff, restaurant and bar easily accessible. I would definitely stay here again. Didn't get to have karaoke night with the Elvis Presley impersonator but looking forward to it!

Review 24:We only stayed one night and found the accommodations to be a little dated but clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly. Can't beat it for the price. We ate at the adjacent restaurant for breakfast and were very pleased with the food and service. If we return to the area we will definitely stay here again.

Review 25:There was a Halloween Party in the Bar and they were charging a cover charge, yet there were no notices posted that we saw prior. $38.00 for 3 drinks including a $20 cover charge!! We couldn't even just get a drink, since we were staying there, without paying the cover.

Review 26:Location an facilities are great. Located close to attractions, beach and restaurants.

Review 27:This wasn't really the hotel's fault but our neighbors were drunk and very noisy in the evening. The breakfast wasn't included in the price even though we got a 10% discount at the restaurant.

Review 28:The view on the ocean. Spacious and convenient room, nicely furnished with a big flat screen tv.

Review 29:There was a leak in the shower, it leaked all over the bathroom and into the bedroom. Could not use the shower. Mould in the shower. Very dirty bathroom. Hair on the floor. The bath mat was hung up with hair and mould on it. Very thin walls, can hear others conversations. Restaurant attached to facility is poor. Internet is terrible. Hardly works.

Review 30:There were 2 separate areas for the room with 2 queen beds. Beach access across the street

Review 31:- prices for breakfast in the lodge bar/restaurant are a bit high

Review 32:+ not far from the beach + nice ocean view from the lodge restaurant + good value for money

Review 33:Smoking is allowed outside the rooms, I guess, because the people below were sitting outside at the table smoking and it came upstairs into our room and we had to shut the windows.Couldn,t sit outside our room either

Review 34:Close to Hearst Castle and we were upgraded to a view room without additional charge

Review 35:they need to put king size beds on the ground floor with ocean view. And to also replace the king mattress, you can feel the springs when sleeping on them. My left hip is sore them them. Also, sheets were not changed regularly.

Review 36:location is great.

Review 37:When we arrived there was no one at the front desk, we had to call out a you hoo. Once checked into our room, we plugged in the fridge, which was difficult as the cover plate had been removed and was there on the floor. The television was plugged into this, and the outlet would only accommodate both plugs after much manipulation. During the night, the fridge commenced to make stressful noises and had to be unplugged...

Review 38:Most comfortable beds ever!

Review 39:Pity about the dog poo immediately outside our garden door, which was inadequately cleared up by staff when requested to do so. Nobody really wanted to take responsibility for the job.

Review 40:Very convenient location

Review 41:Only negative was the shower which switched from boiling hot to freezing cold in a matter of seconds.. Without even adjusting the taps. Not sure what was going on but apart from that pressure was great

Review 42:Great location and views. Spacious rooms very clean and comfy beds. Nice swimming pool and views of the ocean

Review 43:Both the shower and sink faucets leaked badly and had for a while since the wall between the shower and window were stained and the shower curtain was wet half way up. So there was a musty smell.

Review 44:location and cost

Review 45:Food in the restaurant was over priced and awful. We had to send a meal back because it was cold, even though the plate was ridiculously hot. The staff didn't appear to know who was serving who and were worse than useless

Review 46:Great location if you're driving the PCH between San Fran & LA

Review 47:the corridor outside the doors are very busy

Review 48:the two beds weren't next to each other but in undivided separate quarters, across the road from the beach

Review 49:Our room was a little hot in the afternoon. Our sink had very low water pressure but the shower was great!

Review 50:The food the bed & the liquor store was closer than the beach

Review 51:No elevator - we had large and heavy suitcases and our room was on the 2nd floor

Review 52:Excellent location with a view to the ocean from the window, large and pretty room, comfy beds, clean bathroom, great restaurant

Review 53:There is no ac or any type of fan to circulate the air. During the day it was really warm and a little uncomfortable. Also we like to sleep with the windows open and were met with people smoking outside our room. Having a smoking section for these people would be nice. FAR AWAY from the rooms please.

Review 54:The bed was super comfortable and we were so close to the beach. The sound of the waves crashing at night was so peaceful.

Review 55:Because it was warmer than usual needed a fan that helped but not really efficient.

Review 56:King size beds were very comfortable and the proximity to the Hearst Castle was great. Must check out the bay nearby across from the Castle and watch out for Humpback whales and sea otters. also there is a lookout for a herd of elephant seals Amazing!!

Review 57:My room had no refrigerator or microwave, and no ceiling fan, had to get a table one from the front desk so the room had some air moving around in it. There was no closet to hang anything up in, and the bathroom shower sprayed water out from under the curtain making the tile very wet and slippery. And there was no vanity in bathroom to put anything on. They really need to improve some of there rooms.

Review 58:Like the area, close to everything I like to do

Review 59:Overall maintenance is a bit behind although ti was OK for a one night stop

Review 60:Nice location on a tour from LA to SF. Prices are not that high considered the location.

Review 61:Room n bathroom need to b remodel. I felt like I was in motel 6. There were a lot of tiny spiders. Bedding , linens and towels didn't look bright clean. No AC plus whatever fan was install it didn't work properly. Room wAs too stuffy. Bathroom. Window to low a gone passing by could see inside,if u leave the bathroom door open.

Review 62:The complimentary toiletries smell nice good choice.

Review 63:The floor was very creaky and noisy - fortunately we were upstairs - and the shower had very low water pressure (but this is ok during the water shortage).

Review 64:The bed was very comfortable. The location was great - looking right across the street to the ocean. There was a restaurant and convenience store on site. Free parking.

Review 65:No breakfast n so called sea view was in the distance across the road

Review 66:Restaurant food was lovely, Kareoke bar was fun, good location if visiting Hearst a Castle just 5 mins away

Review 67:updated shower. pillows uncomfortable. You can hear people walking and talking next to your window through the hall. No air condition, it was hot in the room. food not cheap, but there are other places to eat in other hotels nearby.

Review 68:Location 5 minutes to Hearst castle . The rooms good size, spacious.

Review 69:Closet door sticks at opening and closing. Shower head drips constantly. Sink faucet is difficult to shut off;-- drips sometimes. (room #123)

Review 70:Loved the small patio facing the landscaped pool area. Very comfortable bed.

Review 71:Not a complaint but note that the hotel is not in San Simeon. If travelling from the north, it is in a collection of hotels a few miles beyond S.S, right on the highway.

Review 72:Good location to stay overnight along highway 1.

Review 73:Wish there were more than one pod of coffee for the in room coffee pot. Wifi was pretty good, got slightly slower at night. The hotel restaurant was a bit slow and pricey, but the food was good!

Review 74:Great location for a Hearst Castle visit! It was just a hop, skip and a jump. Also just up the road from the Rookery. Loved how it was just across the street from the beach, a few restaurant options, comfy beds. Nice and quiet 10pm to 7am. Pool was a bonus! All around a GREAT visit!

Review 75:Tub was stopped up. Shower valve was damaged, shower and tub both cameon at the same time when trying to use one or the other. On and offvalve leaked. Unlock latch missing from front window, required a screwdriver to open it.

Review 76:You don't have to go off the road too far, which makes it a good place to stay for a night on your journey over Highway 1. Quite close to the sea elephants, they are hilarious.

Review 77:not sure if restaurant was connected to hotel ownership. It was very overpriced for what you got. Breakfast was like eating at Denny's for twice the price!

Review 78:Convenient. Good for a night stay. Beds were comfortable. Grounds were neat and clean

Review 79:There was no air condition, no ceiling fan, and therefore no air circulation. It was hot and humid and stale.

Review 80:It's a beautiful location. I could hear the ocean crashing.

Review 81:There was a bulb out in one of the lamps. The hot water handle in the shower leaked. There was mold or mildew on the bottom of the shower curtain.

Review 82:Location, right across from the ocean. Restaurant and food. Size of room.

Review 83:I sent in request to waive the cancellation fee through booking.com because my flight got delayed but they are hard to reach and wasn't understanding of this situation. So if you are a foreigner and risk the possibility of missing your reservation, allow more flexibility in your schedule.

Review 84:First, there was about a six inch step to get into the room which I didn't see, so I tripped and fell into the room. There was no screen in the bathroom window so there were two giant months inside. There were also two screws sticking out by the bathroom sink which could tear clothing or by dangerous if we accidentally hit it or if my son were shorter, he could hit his head. I thought that was really bad. We also had a problem with our toilet. Apparently it was stopped up before we even got there and I didn't realize it. I thought it was just a weird low flow toilet. The water would raise all the way up then take about 15 minutes to drain. Our second day there, my son went #2 and that wouldn't go down. I had to use the bathroom at the onsite restaurant and I notified the main desk. It took about an hour to get maintenance over to fix it. He just plunged it and then it was like a perfect toilet. That's when I realized that it was messed up even before we got there. I have never stayed at a hotel with a plunger in the bathroom. This place had one so my guess is that a stopped up toilet is a regular occurrence. We were also on the bottom floor and we could hear every step of the people above us. Bad for me and my son because apparently the guy above us is an early riser and we would hear him walking back and forth at 515am!! For the price I paid (over $400 for two nights), I was very dissatisfied with the hotel.

Review 85:I liked that it was close to Hearst Castle and I liked the restaurant that was on site. Lots of parking and I liked that there was places to sit and relax outside.

Review 86:The hotel is old, located on a poor stretch of beach that if very dirty. The noise is unbearable - you can hear everything in every roomsurrounding yours, plus anyone walking near your room shakes the walls. It's very pricey for what you get= low value.

Review 87:It was clean and one block off the not so great part of the pacificcoast. The staff was friendly.

Review 88:location was perfect for a nice overnight stay i think two to three nights would be enough restaurant gave excellent choice at realistic prices, we thought we had breakfast once again dissapointed got a 10% voucher room was good with balcony overlooking the pool nice spot

Review 89:Nothing comes to mind.

Review 90:Indicated 10pm to 7am were the quite hours, and it really worked. That was a nice benefit. The view is very nice. Good experience.

Review 91:Dead flies on window sill, beds were so old and very hard, could feel bed springs. Decor is extremely out dated.

Review 92:Location of property, washer dryer, heated pool and grassy area for kids to play.

Review 93:I expect a lot more for $200+ per night. No towel racks, no toilet paper holders (roll was loose on back of toilet). Wifi was awful. We made reservations in March for 2 rooms. They weren't even in the same building. We were with our kids, so had to split up as we didn't want them alone that far away. My wife's room had no hot water in the morning for a shower. Stayed at much nice places on the trip for a lot less money each night. Very disappointed.

Review 94:Was very close to Hearst Castle

Review 95:I liked the atmosphere at the hotel - we participated in karaoke event for the hotel guests and liked it very much. The hotel was also very clean and tidy.

Review 96:Adjoining restaurant pricey. Very noisy when people in room above walked around.

Review 97:Good location for Hearst Castle and the Big Sur. Bed comfortable and clean.

Review 98:Really dated, borderline dingy, rooms. That said, the room was clean

Review 99:right price, convenient to restaurants, Hearst Castle, beautiful drive along Highway 1

Review 100:WIFI does only work at the restaurant / lobby. Totally not at the rooms. The worst WIFI I have ever experienced. It's 2015 so this should nog be a problem. Quality of the beds needs also to be improved.

Review 101:Beautiful location at the beach.

Review 102:Employee failed to tell the pet policy to us. As a tourist from another country, they should explain well to us. Wifi was very slow. Bathroom not clean. It should be nonsmoking room but I found cigaret tips on the balcony.

Review 103:Location

Review 104:Way over priced. Noisy location along Pacific Coast Highway. Thin walls - make sure to get upstairs room if you have to stay here. Smelled pet urine in room- changed to another room. No wifi for ATT customers. Nightstand lamp not working.

Review 105:Leaving.

Review 106:Be sure to notify wait staff when using your discount for the meal - - - ours forgot, and we had to bring attention to it.

Review 107:Everything was so-so, nothing to write home about.

Review 108:San Simeon itself is simply half a dozen motels and a couple of restaurants on the main road. Nothing there at all. Morro Bay or Cambria would be a better destination

Review 109:Motel was fine, the bed was comfortable. The room was tired.

Review 110:This lodge is in need of a serious upgrade of its rooms. The beds were springy, and the rooms were really worn out. WiFi was negligible.

Review 111:proximity to Hearst Castle. Overall outside appearance was well kept. At $170/night it was the least expensive in the area-but in larger markets you wouldn't expect to pay more than $100/night for this type of room.

Review 112:No ceiling fans to move air around. Not everyone wants to have windows open and listen to people talking and walking buy. Put in some ceiling fans.

Review 113:Nice rooms, clean. Close to things

Review 114:The hosts of the lodge were so nice! They gave us a room with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was big and spread out so it felt very welcoming. They have everything on the property, places to eat, a store, pool. It was awesome!

Review 115:We really enjoyed our stay. Lovely motel across the ocean. Pool, free wifi, free parking, room was clean and really big. There was a pool as well. Hotel stuff was very friendly, we asked for a bathtub and it was absolutely no problem to get a room with bath. The motel is near Hearst Castle. Would stay here again.

Review 116:not sure if it was just our room, but shower mixing was bad. Switched from hot to cold at any time.

Review 117:Location right next to beach, had two small dogs and beach was right across highway 1

Review 118:bathrooms need a lot repairs done to them. All the showers and sinks should be completely redone.

Review 119:I liked having the store and cafe right with the motel

Review 120:Tiny shower Room smelled configuration with one bed right next to the bathroom - bad!! Will never stay there again. Price way too high for what we got!!

Review 121:The staff was helpful

Review 122:The WiFi shutdown after a few hours. The coffee brewer was in the bathroom.

Review 123:There was just really one guy at the desk and he seemed to do everything. Checked us in in 5 min. Fixed loose plug on TV. Tried to fix the WiFi. Even informed us of the channel for the basketball game.

Review 124:I didn't dislike anything it was great value for what we paid. We weren't looking for luxury rooms just somewhere clean and comfortable to spend a couple of nights as we traveled along PCH. The San Simeon Lodge easliy met our wishes. We will definetly stay there again.

Review 125:The price was very good

Review 126:No breakfast included. Bed a bit too soft.

Review 127:We were there only one night. Convenient stop in Big Sur. Rooms face a garden with pool (weather was too cold to try it). Nice balcony facing the garden.

Review 128:Rude staff. I ha requested a portacot/crib for our son in my booking and when we showed were told the room wasn't big enough so bad luck!

Review 129:traffic noise, lumpy mattress squeaky floors.

Review 130:Plenty of room, nice furniture, nice shower, very friendly service. The restaurant onsite with excellent food.

Review 131:They said wifi was included, but it was not working.

Review 132:Very convenient located, nice restaurant next to it where you get 10% off as a guest at the hotel. Coffee machine and mini fridge in the room.

Review 133:We were promised at checkin to get a certain discount at the local restaurant and were provided with some discount clips. But we were denied to get any discount when we proceeded to pay (you have to show it when you enter the restaurant, what sense makes this??? probably they will usher you to the "cheap seats"?). The restaurant has a bad quality/price ratio. The two waiters were a young guy (trying his best?) and an old lady (also trying her best?), both of which have never learned to serve. They will present you a bill with a fixed tipp on it already. I do not like this, tipps are at my discretion. Next time(s) we went to a restaurant/motel across the street and it was an absolute better experience!

Review 134:Motel room was rather small but clean and OK.

Review 135:There is no elevator to the second floor.

Review 136:Good hotel in the right location. They have not breakfast and give you coupons for the nearby restraunt. The food there is exellent, but a little bit pricey.
