Reviews for HI - San Francisco City Center Hostel

Review 1:The hot water for the shower tooked too long to get hot, and I didn't like to waste any water but it was really cold. The location, they are like 4 blocks surounding the building that during night they get a little scary to walk alone

Review 2:The building, all the common areas, the little bar downstairs, the community always respectful and nice and the staff always nice and happy to help you.

Review 3:Bed was not ready when i check in. I get the part where we fix our own bed, but did not really feel comfortable with same sheets as someone has just used.

Review 4:Bed was really comfortable and staff very knowledgeable and friendly

Review 5:This hostel is right on the edge of the tenderloin run down area, a lot of social security homeless out on the streets around the area, they never bothered us once though ,

Review 6:Great relaxed atmosphere , lovely bagels and coffee for breakfast. 10 min walk straight to union square and cable cars

Review 7:The location is very convenient for downtown SF but the area is not the nicest. The bed I slept in was uncomfortable: the mattress was either not a normal mattress or was in the process of disintegrating, so it was way too soft and spongy. The carpets in the room didn't look like they were cleaned often enough.

Review 8:The staff were friendly and helpful, and it seemed like the place has a nice atmosphere. The bathroom was clean. The price compares well to most other places to stay in SF.

Review 9:The location is really unpleasant. Right in the centre of a neighbourhood known for homeless & destitute. Not safe to walk at night

Review 10:The interior of the hostel is wonderful, clean and modern

Review 11:The location, unfortunately the hostel is on a street that should well and truly avoided. We were informed by staff that we should try avoid going out after dark. We walked back one evening to discover they were right, it was so scary. It made our stay feel unsafe, and therefor we couldn't get comfortable.

Review 12:It was a unique hostel, the breakfast in the morning was great.

Review 13:The location. It was not far from the powell station and you can walk to the station but near the hostel is dangerous. Tenderloin is just right behind the hostel and almost part of Tenderloin.

Review 14:I didn't even expect about cleaning the room during I stayed but they cleaned the bath room every day and changed the bedding every 3 days. Also you can have bagels for the breakfast! :)

Review 15:Nothing bad really but I'd been in the heat of Latin America for 6 months, and in late November, in San Francisco, I found it cold in my dorm room - not for sleeping,(very snug beds), but for doing things I needed to do, in the dorm room, with my luggage. But it was warm in the common areas.

Review 16:There's a lovely antique elevator that works. There are bathtubs in the bathrooms (don't know if in all rooms). The breakfast is really good - better than at a lot of hotels - and the hours for eating breakfast are very sensitive to the needs of early risers, and also to those who are tired travellers that would like to have breakfast late - up to 11:30. Also I wanted to do some 'shopping' at Amazon, and have my packages delivered here. No drama about that. The photo is of Emil, from Sweden, who's on a travel-light 'Sharing the Love' mission to mix up people from all countries - such as happens in hostels - to bring peace to the world.

Review 17:Homeless people own the neighborhood! Hostel does not care to whom they give the bed. As long as the person pays for the bed hd is in. I was lucky to have many good companies in my nine night stay in HI. However we had to face three other guys who were either fully doped with weed or drunk or use drug in the bathroom. And in ons case we couldn't slerp for two nights because of him snoring like a lion roaring!!!

Review 18:Staff are friendly. The hostel has s nice ambience inside the lobby.

Review 19:I know SF is expensive to get a accommodation, but it seemed a little pricy for the dorm.

Review 20:Hostel is located 10 min walk from Union Square, so it was really convenient to stroll around downtown. There're some public parking next to the hostel, glad to park my car safely. The bed was not so bad.

Review 21:The 3 blocks surrounding the hostel are filled with scary homeless & filth. I wish the city would take action and provide a safer & more sanitary environment. Stepping over human feces in streets & on sidewalks isn't cool!

Review 22:The staff & facilities exceeded our every expectation.

Review 23:Ellis St isn't the safer street in town, so it's better not to cross this street alone at night, take another way to go to Union Square like Geary St, I think it's better.

Review 24:This is one of my favorite hostels. It's a quiet place, the staff is great, breakfast pretty good (with $1 they can make you pancakes or scramble eggs) the atmosphere makes you feel like home. Make sure of enjoy the activities that the hostel offer, they have a free tour in the morning and another things. The room is cleaned every morning, they change the towels and clean the bathroom. It's great!

Review 25:Probably not the best neighbourhood but I felt safe at all times. Ask the staff for the best streets for walking from and to the hostel

Review 26:Amazing hostel, great breakfast, very clean. Professional, friendly and helpful staff

Review 27:my picture ID wasn't accepted, so they cancelled my reservation and only let me stay one night. had to book a room at another hotel so i had a place to stay for the rest of the time. ID i used was okay at a prior HI hostel, so the problem was not a good surprise.

Review 28:nice room, bathroom en suite very convenient. breakfast was fairly good.

Review 29:Neighbourhood is horrible Easy walk to union square but would not do it unless broad daylight Hot water didn't work - had to shower in different room

Review 30:Comfortable bed and pillows. Room was decent size for private hostel room.

Review 31:This was my first time staying in a hostel and the vibe of the staff and the people was amazing. I made some new friends and definitely won't forget the experience anytime soon.

Review 32:The location of the hostel is on Ellis st, where there are a lot of homeless people, they are harmless however one could walk parallel on o pharrel street for more convenience. The hostel is minutes away from the city center( market street is about 15-20 min walking) which is perfect!!

Review 33:What did I not like you mean!! Everything was perfect! It was my first experience in a hostel and I was staying in a 4 person-female dorm. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly! The activities manager "Anthony" is such a nice person and arranges lovely activities like Chinatown walking tour I went on for free with the hostel, where we visited a temple and were given info on one of San Francesco's most famous neighborhoods. Anthony also offers a 2dollar dinner at the hostel on specific days of the week, money goes to charity. There was also free ice cream party which was rly cool! The hostel is very well equipped, with a complete huge kitchen and bar, where you can cook and store your food, breakfast was satisfactory: a variety of bagels, cream cheese, pb and jelly, coffee and water all day long. Rooms are cleaned daily and they even provide clean towels. The place is spotless with an amazing vintage vibe and decorations. It is very safe and cozy. I would recommend it to anyone !

Review 34:There are so many homeless people all around the hostel within a three block perimeter. It's depressing to walk near the hostel.

Review 35:They have parking next to the hostel. Also, the breakfast was free, and I met some nice guests at breakfast. The staff was helpful.

Review 36:Many many homeless people around the hostel, in the area, which is not the hostel fault, but we did feel a bit unsecured at night.

Review 37:Great location as in the middle of the city, many buses close to the hostel, BART station. Very comfortable beds, even if we had a bunk bed! Our shared bathroom was being washed everyday, which was very nice after a long day of sightseeing! Breakfast included was good, until 11h30am, perfect when you have a late night. Friendly stafff. Very good value for 6 nights.

Review 38:The linens and mattress are not the best but for a short trip its ok and beareable. breakfast has limited options (bread or cereal) one type each

Review 39:It's very central, they have events every night and a bar, the common areas are very clean and comfortable, no matter the type of room you get they have a shower per room (way better than communal showers)

Review 40:Horrible location. Choose the downtown location over this if you have any choice. In the tenderloin area which as a lone female is not safe any time of day or night. Long walk from the Bart station through a bad neighbourhood. Would not recommend- just get a taxi. Breakfast is tasty but basic: bagel, cream cheese/peanut butter and coffee. Good for free though!

Review 41:Nice friendly people, attentive staff, clean and comfortable rooms with en suite per dorm.

Review 42:Changing towels evey day: not necessary, especially with the draught. More fruit at breakfast, apples or oranges.

Review 43:Beautiful place. Great bar, great choice of local wine and beer

Review 44:This hostel is located centrally but next to area with homeless shelters, so the way to and from the place is always unpleasant and creepy

Review 45:We stayed only 1 night before leaving USA and picked it up due to location and price. It is a great price-quality choice for San Francisco. Goof breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. Central location, but in a dangerous area.

Review 46:The location is very bad. It was surrounded with homeless and junkies. It's not pleasant to go at night. But it still very close to the city center (few minutes walk)

Review 47:The place was very clean, and the staff were great. I stay in private double room

Review 48:None

Review 49:Clean, good value for money, ideal location as it is very walkable to the sights of downtown and the breakfast served in the mornings is another bonus. I noted prior to staying at this accommodation that a few reviewers complained about the general location as being dangerous. However, I think as long as you don't wander around by yourself a night, the area is generally safe. The numerous homeless people tend to keep to themselves and leave you alone - some I've even briefly conversed with while waiting for the lights to cross the road.

Review 50:Neighboorhood´s not so good (lots of homeless) but it didnt bother me at all.

Review 51:I loved everything. Staff, breakfast (wow, was really good for a hostel). Lounge, the people, clean room every day. Everything´s perfect.

Review 52:Location is in a dodgy part of town (if you take right instead of walking left) and bed mattress not comfy.

Review 53:Cozy common room and bar in house Amazing and really helpful staff Fresh towels daily

Review 54:The area. There were homeless people with needles sticking out of their arms, man eating meth off the street, people pulling switch bladed on ones other and trying to grab you and follow you even if you almost start running. I've never been so scared in my life! Do not stay in this area called the Tenderloin district! It's unsafe!

Review 55:Breakfast was good but too basic. One banana each plus bagels and bread. Tea and coffee. The location was right at the edge of the 'homeless zone' so it was a bit sketchy to walk around at night.

Review 56:Hostel was great, very clean and everyone was friendly. Bathroom was in the shared room which was nice.

Review 57:The mattress was covered with plastic which was very unpleasant to sleep. The neighborhood was full of drug addicts so its a little bit scary but they don't do anything at all.

Review 58:Staff is very friendly, Good breakfast, met a lot of people from different countries, very clean!

Review 59:The street is full of aggressive homeless people (some of them can grab you and won’t let you go until you give them money and it is in the afternoon, not night!).

Review 60:Unfortunate location in the heart of San Francisco's infamous Tenderloin districts. Rooms are small. Very loud at night. Beds are extremely soft, quite uncomfortable.

Review 61:Staff, very polite and helpful, excellent service.

Review 62:The location is really bad. At the moment of check-in, staff gives youa map and points out the 'dangerous triangle' that starts rightoutside their door. Our rental car was parked accros the entrance, whenwe left, windows was smashed and broken in to. Off course, we don'tleave valuables in our car, so nothing was left and rental company wasa good help. Nothing the hostel can help, but be warned, theneighbourhood is bad.

Review 63:The hostel, staff and facilities are ok if you know what to expectfrom a hostel.

Review 64:Being at the edge of Tenderloin the hostel is surrounded by streets in which homeless people are living, which can be uncomfortable.

Review 65:The staff is really nice and offers great help. The rooms are very nice, too. They're as clean as can be and are cleaned every day, which I did not expect at an hostel.

Review 66:1-3 blocks from the hostel are not very safe late at night. Manyweird people.Wifi was very unreliable. It would disconnect in every couple of minutes on both my devices and many other visitors'. At their Fisherman's Wharf location the Wifi was great. Bed was good for me on the top but there were others that were very soft, bad for your back.

Review 67:Great free breakfast, optional eggs and/or pancakes for $1-2.Kind staff. Bathroom is in the dorm room, shared with your roommates only - much more convenient and clean. Shuttle to SFO for $14. Wall AC and USB chargers at tables on first floor above lobby.

Review 68:My only complaint is that the fitted sheets do not stay on the mattress very well. I suggest going to sleep sheets, or perhaps getting larger fitted sheets.

Review 69:Some complain about the area, but I actually really appreciated the area. There are reasonable and good restaurants and a wealth of cultural activities and locations close by. Public transit is easily available, or if you use Lyft Line or Uber Pool it is quite cheap to get a fast ride just about anywhere. I found this hostel pleasant and enjoyable.

Review 70:Overall everything is amazing. The only thing which let's it down is there is a lot of homeless people in the area & at night this can be intimidating! This is nothing to do with the hostel though - they do everything to make you feel safe :)

Review 71:The staff are a credit to the company, without them our visit to San Francisco would not have been as good! Breakfast & wifi were excellent.

Review 72:The location is in the city center but the neighborhood is not that nice. Homeless people around, but it is a city centre of a large city, so somewhat expected.

Review 73:The room was good. It was intended for 5 people, but I just shared it one other person, so got a lot more privacy than I expected. Breakfast was ok for a hostel, but definitely I wouldn't describe it as a perfect breakfast. Some bakery, fruits and a few codiments. Also possibilty to cook pancakes.

Review 74:My mistake that I hadn't read the reviews beforehand. If I had, I wouldn't have chosen this hostel, and neither would I if I went to SF again. The neighborhood is really terrible, junkies and homeless people all around. We were quite afraid to go out for dinner and made sure that we got back before sunset. It's up to you to take your chances and stay here, but I do not recommend.

Review 75:The hostel is really nice and comfortable, breakfast is good and the staff is kind, too. They were extremely helpful at arrival and also arranged airport shuttle for us.

Review 76:Well, the beds are not comfortable at all. Wifi was quite bad in myroom. San Francisco is quite chilly and the heater was not working inthe room. Don't walk around the neighborhood during night. Youwon't feel safe. Take an Uber or taxi. However, there are very nicebars nearby.

Review 77:The cleanness. The location of the place is nice for day time travels.

Review 78:All but 1 of the reception staff were irritable and unpleasant. Location of the hostel is unsafe. Other guests were noisey and smelt of weed. Washing up own crockery and cutlery.

Review 79:Free WiFi, lockers and en suite shower in dorm room. 15 minutes walk maximum to Union Square. $1 for breakfast eggs.

Review 80:Most of the staff just doing a job - not interested in the guests.

Review 81:The beds were very comfortable, and nice fluffy towels. Plus I liked the luggage-friendly elevator.

Review 82:The location seems convenience but there are some homeless people in this area. And it seems not safe in the night time.

Review 83:The room is very clean, and the services are great.

Review 84:The neighboorhood, when you walk to the right of the hostel you will find a lot of homeless/crazy people living out on the street. If you walk to your left, you will not find any homeless/crazy people The music in the bar in the morning was a litlle bit to loud and inappropiat.

Review 85:Value for money Clean Breakfast included and for only 1,- you have pancakes or eggs Staff was very friendly and helpfull in everything

Review 86:Although the hostel is really centrally positioned, the area is quite rough, dirty and absolutely full of homeless people just sleeping on the streets. Unpleasant during the day and even worse at nights!

Review 87:The staff was nice and helpful, the place was cool and funky from the inside and the room was clean, freshly redecorated and newly furnished with nice furniture.

Review 88:Location was good in proximity to Union Square (15 min walk approx). You do not want to walk from Union Square to the hostel by Ellis St. A lot of beggars, homeless, and people urinating on the street. Trash was all over the street. We always walked a few blocks uphill to Geary Blvd to walk towards Union Square. Even then you'll be approached several times for money. But beggars were still nice and not hostile when you smiled and shook your head no.

Review 89:Staff were helpful. Security in the building was good. Breakfast was good and for additional fee pancakes or eggs were available. Great coffee. Great atmosphere and a lot of character to the building.

Review 90:The area is a little dodgy, but as a woman I didn't feel like I was in danger. The staff tell you to walk up 2 blocks and across and thenarea is fine. If you are a first time traveller you might be scard, but don't worry your in good hands.

Review 91:Everything was great! Staff are super helpful, double room was great, bed was so comfortable. They have a bar and have some games on, and won things. Would recommend this place!!

Review 92:Kitchen closed 1-3. Extremely in convenient when you want to make lunch.Although no problem with lots of younger groups there studying English, last few days it was so noisy on mezzazine - groups of kids shouting - had to go back to room to read.Dorm small/bed very soft.

Review 93:Old converted building, good common spaces & kitchen. Friendly, helpful staff.(other than grumpy Arjen ). Good advice re things to do in SF. Good breakfast.

Review 94:I was staying in a private single room and It smells really, really, bad in the rooms, the location is not great but the worst is the smell. The staff is nice but the owners really messed up choosing this location

Review 95:The wifi would cut off occasionally but it's not the biggest issue in the world. The location is sketchy, don't walk around alone.

Review 96:Free breakfast planned activities (went to a bar crawl which was an awesome way to meet people) pub right in the building

Review 97:The hostel is located in a very sketchy area. Lots of homeless people with mental illness, and drug addicts, porn movie theater and "massage" places..I didn't feel that safe walking alone to/from it at night.

Review 98:Clean rooms, a few minutes from downtown by bus, and a few blocks from a BART subway station. Good continental breakfast.

Review 99:The location is unfortunately full of homeless people and drug addicts which isn't really good. Anyway, The hostel guys helped a lot giving me the best option to work around to avoid them and also gave me a voucher to share a car. If you don't want to walk around use UBER POOL or LIFT. It's cheap and they don't mind a short drive as they will understand you don't want to walk.

Review 100:The hostel is very clean and comfortable. I like the rooms with the clean bathrooms for each room which makes a lot of difference with other hostels. The tour activities, movie nights and specials are good.

Review 101:HOUSEKEEPING PERSONNEL WERE ON THE JOB / SPOT, BUT MANY TRAVELERS NEED TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR MESS IN COMMON AREAS . . .

Review 102:FACILITIES INSIDE CLEAN WITH VERY SOCIABLE ATMOSPHERE. WI-FI WORKED GREAT AT THE COMMON AREA, 2ND FLOOR. THE BREAKFASTS WERE NICE AND CONVENIENT. BAR WAS AVAIL. BUT DID NOT USE . . .

Review 103:The only problem is the location. There are a lot of homeless people in the neighborhood. However, if you avoid 2 streets it is ok. Just ask the staff which area you should avoid.

Review 104:everything looks new, the room is clean and the beds are super comfortable. The staff were really nice and helped us to get around san francisco. The price is very cheap for everything that they offer. The breakfest was delicious too.

Review 105:The wifi wasn't the most reliable thing, kept loosing connection, irritating if you were watching a film online! The area around the hostel wasn't too nice but it's not the hostel's fault. The staff did told me which streets to avoid and I didn't go out on my own after dark.

Review 106:It was right in the center of San Francisco and as long as you didn't mind walking a bit, you could get everywhere from it. Staff were always very friendly and eager to help you out with anything

Review 107:Well, the location is good, easy access to the public transportation in tree blocks from the hostel. But the neighborhood isn't that safe.

Review 108:Really confortable room and bed. Doesn't look like an hostel, looks more like an hotel. Cool decoration and nice staff.

Review 109:Bad Odour in the lobby Located next to Junk yard of the city you will find homeless people. But be safe and keep a distance.

Review 110:Breakfast and clean facility

Review 111:What a great location! very very friendly hosts, good breakfast, clean and quiet rooms, pancakes and eggs for breakfast, convenient area, lots of features like a chinatown tour or movie night and a very good selection of songs in the lobby. the area is interesting and easy to access from all over the city. I stayed for 4 nights and really felt like visiting friends. As a plus it was no problem at all to print some tickets or maps. Thank you very much!!

Review 112:The hotel is very backpacker friendly, which can be quite hard to tell from the description if you are not traveling as a backpacker. Fx people had to wash their own dishes after breakfast which was ok for us, but some might dislike this, as it was not expected. The neighbourhood was quite tough(lots and lots of homeless people). You should not stay here if you plan to return to the hotel later than 9 pm each day. The hotel is a bit far from the main attactions of the city, but still within walking distance for most.

Review 113:The hotel was decent in all aspects. Room and bed was as expected.

Review 114:location might look strange as for the downtown - lots of homeless people in the neighbourhood. I was told in the hostel that it's historically the city district where lots of sites for homeless were established decades ago.

Review 115:bathroom in the room; breakfast and free coffee/tea during daytime; convenient to get from the airport and from touristic places; very helpful staff ;-)

Review 116:I have read almost all the reviews available before my booking and naturally ended up very worried about the location of the hostel (although convenient in terms of distance, for my purpose). The whole neighborhood (and I mean very many blocks) is full of homeless people (though I am not sure whether this is the appropriate term, in fact most of the European homeless people would probably get offended if you put them in the same category, because this is a whole new level). In one of the reviews somebody sums it up nicely "You must face this dark reality of American cities..." 100% agree. I have walked these streets alone for about 10 days, early morning or late evening (this time of the year that means always at dark) and had no trouble (thought I did get called a racist, mamasita,...) but I must say that I did not feel safe at all (and I am an Eastern European according to this continent, and my country is so spooky that they film Hostel about it!). You should not be put off from staying at the hostel because of this (unless you are really worried, then better go far from this area), but you should be aware. If you going alone, my best tip is that you (don't go alone!) just walk fast through the streets, memorize how the roads go so you do not look lost or like a massive tourist and just head straight to where you want to get. And one last thing, I think the whole city has about 10 firetrucks which sirens are constantly on (always circling this neighborhood) and 1 police car (that has never even been to this neighbourhood).

Review 117:The hostel itself is really great given how cheap it is, very clean and comfortable. There is free breakfast included and for a dollar extra you can have pancakes or eggs and they also organize events and offer other services such as airport shuttle (only few dollars more than BART and you do not have to slalom around homeless people with your suitcase to get to the station). I am a rather unsociable and private person and in general not fond of hostels at all, but I am really glad I went for this hostel in the end as at the time of my booking a lot of hotels were fully booked and the remaining ones (even though more than double the price comparing to this) I later found out were horrifying, at least from outside (and that matters if you stay in this part of the city.)

Review 118:i dislike the location of the hostel, which is exactly where the large batches of homeless people wonder around. it was a pity that only after i got back to hong kong did i read the news that this area was actually a homeless people's concentration point. if you walk alone in the evening homeless people would follow you talk to you even tho they won't attack you that still scared me a lot. that basically ruined the image of SFO in me as insecure and dirty. even tho i also went to beautiful places such as the lands end, golden gate bridge and fisherman's wharf.

Review 119:the historical interior of this hostel triggers a sense of nostalgia, the cartoons played on the silver screen early mornings, the mezzanine where i enjoyed reading books and relaxing in the evenings after a long day excursion. i also liked the free coffee/tea at the lobby, really home-welcoming.

Review 120:Noise from the street downstairs - boom box was going off at 3-4am from rowdy folks on the street (nothing the hostel can do I suppose), and also ambulances / police cars.

Review 121:Location - convenient to walk everywhere / catch a tram in the city Value for money - private double room had an ensuite (small but sufficient for a decent shower then a crash into bed after a long day of walking!) Clean towels daily (private room)

Review 122:The location. A bit far from the downtown and many homeless people around on the street. Anyway, not the problem with the hotel itself.

Review 123:I like a lot of things. Staff are friendly and willing to help anytime. Clean and comfortable room. A kitchen for guests to cook and a bar for guests to socalize. On top of these, the price is great! I would recommend it.

Review 124:location was not very good especially when you are women and alone. a lot of homelesspeople. kind of scary. people told us that this area is really bad. I didn't feel comfortbla in the night. wish I would knew this before. but location is right in the center of the town. cofusing was that on the websites there were a lot more things offering, but it was from the connected hostel in downtown. a pitty.

Review 125:shared bedroom, there was enough room for privacy. I also liked the breakfast, for a hostel very good! they had some activities offered. staff always tried to help you. they printed my boarding pass :) location is right in the center of the town.

Review 126:Ellis Street sucks big time. There are *a lot* of homeless people and it gets scary to walk there at night. My solution to this problem is this: don't use Ellis street, use Larkins street or O'Farrell Street to get to the hostel. These are much better.

Review 127:- common space - personnel - wifi - free coffee - free breakfast - clean rooms - price Basically everything BUT the location.

Review 128:The location was a bit nasty, but we knew it before we booked it, so it wasn't a surprise. Anyway, it's not that bad, as some people say.

Review 129:We had a private room with a private bath, and it was neat and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious.

Review 130:1. By Any angle, filthy depressing drug or alcohol related homeless were all over. You as a traveler must face this dark reality of US cities at anytime you go out. 2. Bath & shower were in the bedroom but I prefer outside. 3. Each bedside light was too bright so it wakes other people in the room. This should be more modelete power such LED type. 4. Breakfast started 7:30am was little late. It should at least start 7:00am. 5. Common place is easy to gother people especially group traveler but hotel should set some rule for noise control at least such as between 10pm - 6am.

Review 131:1. Wifi condition was good. 2. Common area was confortable.

Review 132:The area has a lot of homeless people. You can avoid them but it made me not want to do anything in that area. The wifi was terrible in the room but worked fine in the common areas.

Review 133:The hostel was very clean and I like free tea and coffee. It's close to lots of buses making it easy to get around.

Review 134:weak wi-fi in the room no spirits in the bar location ( tenderloin )

Review 135:great management staff very nice double room , great bed very clean friendly staff

Review 136:Outside the hostel..Security is not that good outside..

Review 137:The kitchen was excellent. You can keep your food on the ref..with complete utensils and cookware etc...

Review 138:I have to say: beware of the location! It's in the worst neighborhood (tenderloin)/drug addicts all over the place. Homeless people as well. It is super smelly and you don't feel comfortable walking around at night.. Always take a cab! The hostel is perfect, but the location really made me feel uneasy.. If you're not alone, I'd still suggest to stay there. It's a good deal.

Review 139:The hostel is great! Everything is clean, staff is super nice and helpful, they organize a bunch if stuff (did a Chinatown tour) and it's easy to meet other people. A great place to hang out! Breakfast was nice as well. Bed was comfy.

Review 140:The location of the hostel is very convenient to go to everywhere, but the surrounding area is full of homeless people. Because of that, it has a bad and smelly environment on the sidewalk in this area. It was not a big problem, but sometimes it's a little inconvenient.

Review 141:The place has a great vibe, good facilities and there was plenty of arranged activities. Vintage and retro character. Private suite great and tidy with good space and comfortable bed. Staff are awesome. They were warm and friendly. In the morning, they have a great free breakfast and for only one dollar plus, you can ask for pancakes or scrambled eggs. Also, they offer 24 hours coffee and tea. At nights they have a bar working inside the hostel. So, you can drink some beers and have fun with your partner, friends or with another guests.

Review 142:The outside: terrible neighbor, tons of smelly homeless, I did not felt secure walking around there ..never!!! Do not enter Turk street for any reason!!!

Review 143:The inside: nice room, bathroom ok, good breakfast, great stuff, warm environment.

Review 144:Sorry to say, but the location is really bad. Its easy to find ( walking from Civic center 7min), but the neigborhood is terrible. Around the streets so many homeless and drug addicts. Its terrible to see so much of poverty around the block. We got advice not to walk on several streets around the Hostel in the nighttime as ist dangerous. Though i am a tall muscular European( 180cm / 6ft) i felt somehow uncomfortable when i had to walk back home in the night. Of course this has by far nothing to do with HI Hostel itself, but you should know in what neighborhood you will end up when you book this hostel.

Review 145:This Hostel is as good in Quality as HI Hostels are in general. Staff is super nice and helfpul. Beds are comfy, shower is clean, daily towelchange, all smells just nice. The lounge is comfy, they offer specials - like last week open Karaoke night - or free Movies... a very relaxed place to stay.
