Reviews for European Hostel
Review 1:Andy, the front desk rep, is calm, kind, and an all around pleasure to deal with. Lots of interesting travelers from Europe to talk to. Rooms are cozy and quiet. Best value in town!
Review 2:Overall very unclean, stains everywhere, molding smell, bathrooms were constantly unclean, and the "furniture" in the room was either broken or unusable.
Review 3:Close to where I needed to be.
Review 4:First floor was underwater because of a normal rain. It stayed wet for 2 days. - Stuff was very unwilling to help. - No heating in January. I needed to sleep with full clothes on to survive. - Homeless people living/changing clothes at the front door every night. - room was dirty, bed made loud noises for ever movement waking everyone else up.
Review 5:Cheap, close to downtown.
Review 6:overall the hostel was far from clean, the air was really stuffed. Showers were not working very well, took ages to rinse off the shampoo and soap. I wouldn't stay another time.
Review 7:Location was very convenient and I could store a bike indoors over night.
Review 8:One of the fridges in the Kitchen is not working properly. People sometimes leave mess in the sink. Some bathrooms do not have towell hangers.
Review 9:The property was old and could use some improvements. But the Front Desk Attendants (Andy and Alex) are excellent people! They are hard workers, friendly, but humble, and they're always willing to help. God bless them!
Review 10:There is no lift - which is annoying if you have a heavy suitcase and a room on the first floor!
Review 11:The hostel is well-located and clean. Gives good value for money.
Review 12:Just some weird guys staying in this hostel. But I think, the hostel can't control that things. So it is fine.
Review 13:I like the hospitality and honesty of the front desk.
Review 14:Dirty matrasses and bathroom. Didn't feel safe in the area around the hostel.
Review 15:Helpful stuff. Overall alright for the price you pay. A place to sleep, not more and not less.
Review 16:Paying about.$100 per night for a very tiny room, not even a sink in it, or a t.v.. There were no coat hangers or hooks for clothing. You will not get your money's worth
Review 17:It's full of homeless people and beggars all around, it's not nice to be walking at night. They don't clean the place, I stay for 3 nights and they never clean the bathrooms. They were very messy.
Review 18:It was close enough to everything. The people there were nice.
Review 19:The neighbourhood area is dangerous...Lots of homeless and drug addicts in Market Street area and the street where hostel is. (Look up Tenderloin area on Google.)
Review 20:Good security in Hostel. Location was close to the public transport and downtown.
Review 21:I'm so upset with parking lot. It's not belong to the hotel and it is not safe. If you have a car prepare to park at the building and have to pay also cuz it is not free.
Review 22:The price is not so high.
Review 23:I felt really not safe at the Minna st, even during daylight, because oflot of homeless people present on the street and missing turists orother "casual" people. My feeling (and the one of my roommatestoo) was so strong that I decided to come back the latest at 9 pm. InFodor's travel guide I've found later information that streetsSouth of Market (SoMa) from 6 - 10th is better to avoid - and thislocation is on the 8th... So, for coming back over night, I took the9th, that make shorter walking by Minna st. And thus more safe
Review 24:Location and easy accessibility by public transport - to Civic Centerfrom oak International Airport, and walking distance from downtown andcable cars
Review 25:The location is in the heart of the tenderloin and I did not feel safe staying there and walking around at night. I choose to find another place to stay and expressed my concerns to the staff, and they do not have a return policy so I paid money for a place I didn't stay at because I didn't feel safe.
Review 26:Everything else. No ac even in August! Bunk beds were not in good shape(top bunk rocking etc). Very dirty. Carpets are water damaged and smellsvery bad. Every floor smells a lot of mold. Bathrooms have water damageddoors. Showers and plumbing do not work properly: not all toilets flush, some shower heads spray water everywhere (getting towels and clothesoutside the standing shower space wet), not a single towel rack. Linenshave been heavily used well beyond the point of replacement (holes insheets and pillow cases). Very bad deal for the money. I know it'sonly $30 a night, but all hostels in the area are that much!
Review 27:Andy, the staff member, was very courteous and friendly.
Review 28:But when I got into my room I was shocked bcuz The room was messed up, and smell was bad, and there were lots of gabages outside of window. Some of shower booth's not working well. And so many weirdos are just in front of this hostel....
Review 29:Staff was great.
Review 30:Not very clean, no fresh bed sheets, waiting for bathroom. Some weird people in the hostel area. Bring towels!
Review 31:Nice owners, top deck with city view, close to subway and bus stops. Water in shower was always warm. You can borrow a hair dryer. Good center location. Kinda cool hostel.
Review 32:Certainly not the cleanest place I have stayed, and didn't get bedbugs, although I was certainly worried about it! If they stepped up their game, even a little bit, the place would be so much nicer.
Review 33:Great location, excellent price. Friendly enough staff, although rarely saw them.
Review 34:Nothing to complain about. Just do not stay here after staying in a four or five star hotel in Vegas.
Review 35:Location is great. Tube station and buses only a few minutes walking. Walking distance to Fisherman’s Wharf and a cab will charge you less than a tenner for a ride to Castro.
Review 36:Sbdy vomited at the toilet but it didn't clean up till check out. Too hot and humid room. scary street especially nightime
Review 37:Easy to approach from airport. Cheap price but that's all
Review 38:The shared bathroom, toilet & shower was dirty & wasn't cleaned during our 3 days there.Kitchen was greasy, bedlinen questionable. This place is ok if you can tolerate grime, the stench, filth & edginess on the streets outside.
Review 39:It was cheap. We met interesting young travelers. The concierge was helpful.
Review 40:omg, horrible. started at the front desk when my foot was actually sticking to the floor. and went downhill from there. people were partying loud till the wee hours and then you could hear them puke. You hear everything. The smell, ugh..the photos make it look ok, but it really was not. Very depressing
Review 41:San Francisco is ridiculously expensive to stay and for $75 i was forced to pay for a dump!
Review 42:Poorest, no standards at all. Its just name European but not matching 1% of Europe standards. Beds are dirty, everything you have to do yourself, bedding cleaning. No-smoking is just on wall. All the time smoke all over the place. Not healthy environment to sleep due to smoke. Whatever the case when you pay you expect something but its just waste of money. 100% wastage. Not recommended to anyone.
Review 43:Nothing
Review 44:I stayed at the top of the building and there was rotten fruit outside the window which had just been ignored by the management. The carpets were dingy and dirty and it looked like the place hadn't had a lick of paint in years. Inexcusable for a place that must be literally raking in cash. I overslept on the day of my departure and they made me forfeit my $10 key deposit. Outside there were large numbers of homeless people sleeping rough and the adjacent street wreaked to high heaven of urine. I would definitely give this place a miss.
Review 45:The budget price
Review 46:Neighborhood is dangerous, especially after dark. Also cleaning wasn't thorough, some showers were truly disgusting, and I saw a mouse in the 3rd floor hallway.
Review 47:Location was central and near a BART train line.
Review 48:So dirty! not save at all! a room whoch is normally in other Hostel for Two Beds, has in this hostel 6 beds! with very tiny Windows, so no O2 to breath at all in the night!
Review 49:I had to move between rooms during my stay, there are not enough restrooms and bathrooms. The beds are awful and the doors seem to have a hard time to get locked so everyone just leaves them open. all in all... if there's no other place for you, it's bareable, but do try to find somewhere else to stay in the city.
Review 50:I got a cheap deal over here.. but...
Review 51:Bring your own towels!! Run down building in shabby neighborhood, frontdesk person had an attitude, the room was really tiny, the bathroomswere barely functional. One did not have a working light, just askylight. No elevator. I paid for 3 nights and left after 2.
Review 52:Location, cheap price
Review 53:Neighbours forgetting to lock the room when leaving. Wi-fi is really slow. Only two power sockets for 6 people is not enough. Lightbulb in toilet do not work. No breakfast. Street is occupied with homeless. High level noises from street at night.
Review 54:Price
Review 55:Everything from smelly rooms, filthy bathrooms, old and uncomfortable mattress. Weak Wifi. Smelly kitchen. No breakfast. No facilities, except a small kitchen. Avoid at all cost, you will thank me. It is ridiculous this operates in SF.
Review 56:Friendly fellow travellers
Review 57:well, there was a mouse. no biggie. but the squeak to complain about was the door to the bathroom across the hall - constant, infernal... and easy to fix if they cared. which they don't. said bathroom also had the lightbulb burned out, which didn't bother them either.
Review 58:the location is good and parking is POSSIBLE... which in SF is worthy of note
Review 59:I did not like that the rooms lacked power sockets so I had to do it in the kitchen (which closes 11pm) or hallways. Sometimes there were queues for the bathrooms.
Review 60:I liked the price, slept okay in shared dorms, could lock my valuables in a locker in the day.
Review 61:Cleaner moved dirt around floor with mop, lower floors have mice, permanent people who r there are weir. There should be more toilets, 6 person room was rather small
Review 62:early check in fantastiC! As I was falling asleep standing up
Review 63:can't use kitchen after 11, but I mean you get what you pay for, in that it's the cheapest in san fran, if you can afford it, go somewhere else otherwise you'll always find good people staying there, and some weirdos cause its the cheapest.
Review 64:it is the cheapest in city area
Review 65:Not the cleanest. Shared bathrooms and many people, kitchen was unkempt and lots of peoples' food packed into dirty fridge.
Review 66:Nice staff, it was close to the bus and Muni and Market for lots of transit options.
Review 67:No parking, although it was advertised that there was parking available. No cleaning personnel. had to trust the person before me had left the restroom clean (it was shared) No breakfast. Had to do your own cooking. Kitchen not very well equipped. It had a terrace, on the roof, on the top floor. but no view, 'cause it was blocked with wooden panels. The rooms had no amenities whatsoever: not even a small tv.
Review 68:The narrow was a little scary at night. But it depends on person. And i used 6 dormitory, so just it was uncomfortable
Review 69:Cheap! And location is so nice i can take a muni and bart near my house :-)
Review 70:The bathroom was not the cleanest in the morning. However, the frequence of use does not allow for improvement since it is up to the guests in the morning hours. Oh, the doors squeak!
Review 71:This was clearly not the most modern facility, however it is absolutely sufficient for a good night's sleep since you'll not be around for more than that. Comfortable bed with fresh bed linen, clean and calm. Plus friendly staff that accommodates for individual wishes such as late arrival.
Review 72:The surrounding neighborhood is pretty dodgy. The beds are also very squeaky and the bathrooms are not really clean..
Review 73:One of the cheapest hostels in San Francisco.
Review 74:No where did I read that they didn't want that the rule was that you couldn't be in a bunk room if you were over 30.
Review 75:People were nice. Common room had lots of space
Review 76:-backupers cook food that smells horrible -3 out of 4 restrooms didn't work -wifi was poor and 50% time didn't work. -some people were copulating on the street at night -beds, oh, beds. They are totally destroyed, sound like orchestra after any tiny move.
Review 77:nothing. I hope this hostel would become better someday.
Review 78:The kitchen was a mess and the wifi signal weak. Sometimes we had to wait for 10 minutes to get into the restroom.
Review 79:Very close to public transport and even walking to civic center in 10 min. The area is surrounded by homeless but they don't bother much. Staff was very nice.
Review 80:Very budget option could be bit cleaner, but due to the fact that the medium price in sf is 200usd its still a choice
Review 81:In the center, we were able to check in @2am
Review 82:It wasn't clean. you need ear plugs to sleep. It's the real backpack experience. Worth for the low price. I felt it was safe. No distress.
Review 83:The fact it was so cheap. For that it was worth it.
Review 84:The aren't many restrooms and the ones they do have generally have something small wrong with them (one of the toilet handles were completely broken).
Review 85:I had a roof over my head and a bed to sleep in, which was all I needed. There's a communal kitchen where you wash the dishes you use. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 86:In a double room with shared bathroom : Bad smell everywhere No wifi service in the 4th floor Doubts about the cleanliness of the sheets in the room Too expensive for what is it
Review 87:The common area is closed by 11pm which is not cool cause then you canthang out in the hostel other than on the narrow corridors......or go toyour room and if you share it with other people then you cant foolaround in it......
Review 88:It is a fair HOSTEL....you get what you pay for. Not more, not less. Istayed for 2 nights, it was just fine. Its not the hyatt hotel. But itsok if you are alone or with friends. Not good for couples. Its is fairlyclean, not 100% but its ok !!! the staff is just fine. They are helpful. It is a cheap hostel. And you get what you expect from a cheap hostel. Abed and a shower. Not more than that. It is not dangerous. There are oneor maybe two harmeless people on the street. Just people on the streetbut they are just fine they wont even look at you!! You are at a walkingdistance to the center of downtown, just 5 blocks away.the shower on the first floor as soon as the stairs finish is GREAT. the showers where there is only shower and no toilet are less good. you'll meet interesting people !!
Review 89:I recommend that the hostel should be tidied up. There was a rat in my room. Also bed sheet need to be cleaned!
Review 90:Receptionist was kind and I could meet various people from many counties. Location wasn't bad.
Review 91:The place is quite dirty. Dusty window, gray napkin and dust in the bathroom — that's what you can expect. I believe there are better options in this area.
Review 92:Well, this place was available so we picked it up. It's not far away from city center, so that's good.
Review 93:First when we arrived they gave us the worst dorm room, it was a very tiny freezing room. We were on a month trip so we had a lot of luggage with us. It was either you walk or you leave that place for your luggage, you couldn't do both. We spent the first night and then we asked for changing the room. They did, the other was a little bit better but still. I guess two bathrooms are not enough since every time I needed one it is always busy. We had very bad wifi when we changed the room which was in the upper lever.
Review 94:I don't think I did like something in this hostel. maybe just knowing a few people, that's all.
Review 95:I have attended hostels in Los Angeles that was the same price but way cleaner.
Review 96:I liked that it was so cheap. The staffs were friendly but uninformed. Apparently there are a couple of different transit systems in San Francisco which they knew nothing about and always wanted to get me a cab.
Review 97:Only some nitpicks: Number of bathrooms a bit too low for number of guests -- in the morning/evening it will take a while before you can get one. Thermostat/AC of room broken and heated permanently.
Review 98:Nice staff Bathrooms comparatively large with comfortably sized showers Good wifi reception throughout the hostel Well stocked kitchen Easy to meet other guests Close to Civic Center station
Review 99:Dirt of sheets, towels and bathrooms Shared bathrooms (insufficient) Cramped rooms Dangerous street (full of homeless and drug dealers) Rumors of presence of mice Urine smell in carpet
Review 100:Location Price Kitchen
Review 101:Wifi connection was barely decent- I managed to make it slowly work with my laptop, but not with our smartphones. We had been asked to leave 10 $ deposit at check in. We read on booking.com that check out time was 11 am, but at 10.00 am a VERY RUDE cleaning woman woke as up, telling us that we had to leave immediately- when back at the reception counter an unpolite gay (not the same we met the night before) just told us that checkout time was at 10, so we wouldn't have our 10 $ back. Soooo disappointing!
Review 102:Shared bathrooms extremely clean
Review 103:sketchy location for safety, bedbugs in first room, rude staff, shady dealing around cash key deposit.
Review 104:comfortable mattress, convenience of location, but sketchy walking there at night
Review 105:The shared bath was really dirty, only one bathroom for 8 rooms, which is almost 40 persons per bathroom, smell really bad, like if someone smoked outside in the hallway!
Review 106:The staff was really good, willing to help and solved my concerns as fast as he could. I'll give him a 9
Review 107:The place is awful and stinking! I got there in the night and I have to pay for 4 nights, but the next day I ran away from there, strangers, the place don't offer any comfortable and stinking!! They didn't refund my money back. I lost $74... I hate that place! never stay there!!!
Review 108:Found the sharp with needle in the room! Pemanent smell of weed in the hall. Squeaky mattress. Very small room without even chair. Totally crap place. Avoid it.
Review 109:Location near downtown but not very safe place.
Review 110:One tap in the toilet is broken.
Review 111:The location is really great. 5 minutes walk from Civic center bart train, and near really cool clubs and bars (not too close). The price is really good, and the other back packers in the hostel were super cool.
Review 112:Nothing good to say anout the hostel... the area is one of the roughest of the city... i've never seen so many junkyes, homeless and begger as in that place. The microwave was not working, i tryed for1h to make it work but than i decided to eat my dinner cold couse it never heated it up!!! i will never go back there even if they'll give me for free the entire place!!!
Review 113:Everything else. 1.Absolutely incompetent staff. They don't know anything except no.2 2.Extra charges about everything 3.Unjustified prices 4.Toilets that don't flush everything 5.Was dirty. Very. Go ahead, read the other reviews. 6.Dangerous place. Prepare for injuries. 7.Pictures are inaccurate. For example, expectation + photo - Has a computer. Reality - No computer. 7.
Review 114:Leaving. Other hostels.
Review 115:Wifi not working on 4th floor, where my room was located. The manager of the hostel was coming everyday at 11 pm to the common room (where the kitchen,tv,wifi was), turning the lights off and telling everybody to go back to the rooms. So no chance for having late dinner/beer/watching a movie in the evening...
Review 116:Very clean, perfect location, very good deal for the price you pay
Review 117:No parking, got a 66 dollar ticket for parking on the street outside the hostel. no a/c or fan, just an open window to let the air in. It was noisy , there was a business that had activity all night long, so it was not easy to sleep. Halls were dirty as was the kitchen area, bathrooms were ok, not a lot of waiting to use bathrooms
Review 118:it was close to everything i wanted to go
Review 119:The hotel shows a lot of wear and we didn't feel that it was very clean. The common areas were rather small for the number of guests.
Review 120:Just a few blocks away from city hall and the performing arts district.
Review 121:What I didn't like were all the small flies in the kitchen/common area. Is it that difficult to get rid of them? There is only one common area, which is quite ok to meet ppl etc.... but why do they close it at 11pm? They seriously send their guests to off to bed at this time.
Review 122:I find the location to be good!
Review 123:The neighborhood is quite creepy at night, although I wouldn't say it's dangerous, just full of homeless people and drug addicts. The fun atmosphere I experienced in other hostels around the US is completely missing, the place is quite flat and boring. "Rooftop bar" described on their website is really just a roof, nothing on it, overlooking to the rooms of a nearby Holiday Inn. Cleaning lady locked herself in one of the bathrooms and spoke on the phone in spanish for quite some time, loudly, while I was waiting to get in. :D
Review 124:The price is fairly cheap, although would recommend spending a bit more on a different place...sorry Staff is nice and polite.
Review 125:there are only 2 toilet/shower rooms per level so if 6 people where showering at a time, the wait could be hrs just to use a toilet. on top of that there was an overwhelming stench of septic near each toilet. the whole building centres around a void to allow inner rooms a window each, this essentially resulted in an amplification of noise coming from the only comunal room on the bottom floor making it rather difficult to stop even conversation entering your room at night.
Review 126:not much, perhaps the only positive to take from the experience was how polite the check in staff member was. Possibly due to a premonition, he let me pay for only the first three days of my week long booking incase i wanted to go elsewhere.
Review 127:The cleanliness was very poor The carpets were old and extremely worn. Infestation of bed bugs. Window didn't open fully.
Review 128:Convient Location
Review 129:- not very comfortable mattress - no elevator
Review 130:- place (from cheapest hotels is the best place I have been in SFR, close to city center, not so much homeless) - guest there
Review 131:Parking is NOT available and you will need to use about 30 dollars pr. day to park your car. Hostel is placed in an alley-like street where we wouldn't go out in the night time.
Review 132:Awful smell, bed bugs and mice!! You should avoid this hostel... and i have been in a lot of cheap hostel around Europe.. but this one is way worse!! I m full of bite of bed bugs and one of my roommate was woke up by a mouse on his leg!
Review 133:The bathroom where disgusting with hair everywhere on the floor and in the shower. It stinked everywhere. It smelled like urine. There were carpets everywhere which is the worst thing to keep a place clean
Review 134:Then answered rapidly by email if you have a question before and while you are there. It is very well located even if this area of San Francisco is not the safest. But as long as you are careful there is no problem
Review 135:There was a rat coming into the room. Moreover, the room #103 is just mext to the trash. It was disgusting! Don't ever sleep in the room. Everything sucks. No laundry and breakfast too!
Review 136:It's located near Market Street.
Review 137:Hostel is located in a dangerous area, wasn't clean at all, not enough kitchen supplies like cups etc., wouldn't recommend this hostel at all only if you're looking for a cheap place
Review 138:Staff at reception was friendly and helpful, Not too far away from city center and BART
Review 139:old run down building filthy furniture bathrooms not clean not the best/saftest neighbourhood overall uncomfortable experience
Review 140:Friendly staff wifi in the room
