Reviews for Hotel Whitcomb
Review 1:reminds me of the hotel in the shinning or american horror story. also has a lot of bums outside due to the area, but i still felt safe.
Review 2:great location
Review 3:small rooms, small bathrooms with rusty exuipment. in general it is old hotel with rooms which need to be updated. Location at the street with many homless people which maks it quite danger to walk after dark.
Review 4:When we arrived to our room on the fourth floor with our luggage, the key card did not work. We went downstairs and were told maintenance would be up to let us in. About 10mins of waiting by our door,it took approximately 20 minutes with maintenance in our room fixing the problem while we unpacked. I was not offered a compensation for my time and their faulty facility.
Review 5:Walking distance to the concert we were to be attending
Review 6:I booked two rooms and we told them I was paying for one and my friend was paying for the other but they charged me for both then when we checked out they did it to my friend too. I'm still waiting for a $460.00 credit 2 days later. We couldn't figure out why there was such a problem but we are both still waiting for our refunds. Probably will not come back again because of that. It put me in a bad spot. Had to borrow money for groceries and meds that I had to get when we got home. Very frustrating!
Review 7:I liked the employees, very friendly and the Starbucks was awesome!
Review 8:They said that parking was $30 on the website, but they charged us $46. Which was outrageous. The night attendant was rude, the front desk guy at check out creeped me out a bit, but he was friendly enough.
Review 9:We came up to see TOOL at Bill Graham civic center. The location was PERFECT. Not even a 5 minute walk. The room was small, but clean and completely served it's purpose. I was happy.
Review 10:100 year old building, so the shower is tough. Low water flow and it doesn't get very hot.
Review 11:Friendly staff, good security. Historic hotel and a great deal for the middle of SF
Review 12:Requested and paid for an extra roll out bed, it was not in the room. We alerted the gentleman on reception, he assured it would be sent up. The room was small, we were unsure how the bed would fit. We left to go out and explore. We returned 3 hours later at 11pm. Once again, no bed. We went down to reception. The lady on reception was very rude, instead of apologizing and rectifying the issue. She asked why we waited so long to complain, when we had been out all evening. She told us that the room was too small for an extra bed. We were irritated and explained that we had paid for the extra bed, and in the end she moved us to a slightly larger room. The bed was provided but was very dirty and dusty, very uncomfortable. Very disappointed.
Review 13:In one of the worst areas or San Francisco. Don't take that from me, check out the surrounding area on the internet - it gives you instructions on how to walk and where to look and be careful - and when you get there you see why. When we arrived we noticed it was inundated with homeless both in and around the entrance to the hotel and in the Starbucks attached. It hasn't seen a lick of paint in years and there were people wandering round the corridors with no shirts on, dogs barking (quite a few had dogs). The room was freezing cold and the heater had been tampered with to stop you being able to turn on the heat. We asked to be moved to another room and were refused and told we would have to wait until someone tried to repair it. There was nowhere to wait, it was as cold in the hotel as it was outside (46F). We went onto the booking.com website and booked into the 4* Westin St Francis in Union Square for $15 LESS than we were going to pay for this dump. We didn't spend longer that an hour there and that was too long.
Review 14:It is historic
Review 15:Sadly, parking lot staff were quickly overwhelmed with the influx of guests attending the performance at the auditorium. We waited 45 minutes to be helped by a very friendly -- and very frazzled -- attendant. Also there is construction going on around the hotel at the moment, so the noise levels were pretty awful starting about 7:30 am on Monday morning. Not the hotel's fault at all, just reporting in.
Review 16:Hotel Whitcomb is just steps away from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium; we chose the hotel based on its location, and that it offered parking.
Review 17:the restaurant was closed for the week of Christmas and although the bar was opened and they offered a limited menu ( the food was good), there as no other decent places to eat nearby.
Review 18:location was optimal for going to the Opera and the staff was nice. Rooms were clean and cozy.
Review 19:Had planed to have a wonderful dinner in your restaurant but it was not open for dinner. Slow time of year we were told. I had called ahead to inquiring about restaurant but not told it only have bar food.
Review 20:The young lady that checked us in was VERY customer service oriented, the manager fixed an issue we had with our room door immediately and even showed up to make sure we satisfied after maintenance left and the hotel is just beautiful.
Review 21:The staff at the hotel was helpful friendly and courteous. The hotel itself is charming, the restaurant is excellent and the rooms are larger than normal for San Francisco standards. The hotel is conveniently located at the street car and bus stop. It's also located with the BART and subway stop beneath it. If you don't have it in your room, just ask and they are more than happy to accommodate. There are other great restaurants in the area. The beautiful city of San Francisco has an unusually high homeless, mentally ill, and substance abusing population. Please note this cannot be avoided at any hotel in the city. That being said that being said, safety was never a concern. There is also security at night in the lobby.
Review 22:This may be a classic, but it is *way* past its prime. In urgent need of a refresh. Gloomy lighting throughout, including room. Low pressure shower with the head too low. Insufficient heat. Couldn't see inside my suitcase unless I hauled it onto the bed. Inadequate heat. No working space in room (a low chair in front of a coffee table). Extension leads with plugs falling out & non-functioning outlets. And the neighbourhood is pretty scary - definitely the wrong end of Market Street. I've visited many cities in the world, and lived in New York in the 1980s - not its finest hour - but never saw some of the scary things I saw on this visit. Booking.com rules won't let me describe the details because it involves forbidden words.
Review 23:Close to BART at Civic Center.
Review 24:Hotel Restaurant closed at 11am sunday morning, no brunch service - met other guests just as disappointed with no weekend brunch.. Small bed, reception confirmed a Queen bed but looked more like a double - couples should request king bed
Review 25:Excellent location! Friendly staff, secure parking directly behind hotel, beautiful historic decor in lobby, windows in room open for fresh air, comfortable bed. Highly recommend Sam' Diner right across the street, amazing breakfast, se bed until 3pm
Review 26:No help at front desk. One person and line of people checking in. No room service. No snacks/drinks available in room.
Review 27:Good value. Fine mid-Market St location. Comfortable beds. Adequately appointed. Nice restaurant. Free wifi. Impressive old-world lobby.
Review 28:We were there for two nights and each morning the fire alarm went off at 7am. As great as the location was the street gets very loud very early.
Review 29:The location was great and the historic charm of the hotel was very nice!
Review 30:I was given a confirmation thru email with a price, yet when I checked out I was charged $65.00 more which was not the taxes or any extra fee. It was the base price. The guy at the counter absolutely did not care. Said he was the book keeper and that was the price! No apologies! No nothing! I kept my cool and informed him I'd give a bad review. We stayed there becouse my daughter was having brain surgery that next morning at UCSF so it was 5:30 am when we checked out. Mabye he needed sleep or just coffee but his not caring at all about the mix up really got to me!
Review 31:The location
Review 32:Poor facilities. Fire Alarm rang in the night at 2 am-False alarm. Very bad staff and service. Old carpets smelling. It seems the people there are not bothered about guests or service. Very old looking hotel. No upkeep. Will never stay there again
Review 33:Location
Review 34:This hotel was really expensive considering how outdated all the facilities were. It was also really expensive, the pictures shown definitely make it look better than it is.
Review 35:The location was perfect
Review 36:It's not the safest area to stay if you're not familiar with San Fran. My fiance and I had to run out of the Subway restaurant across the street because homeless/drug addicts were fighting and we were afraid they had weapons.
Review 37:It was awesome that there was a fitness center! The staff was very helpful and the Starbucks in the lobby was an added suprise.
Review 38:Hotel Whitcomb is located in an area that has a very large and lively homeless population. Be sure to use caution and stay alert.
Review 39:Hotel Whitcomb is a beautiful space. Upon entering the facility you feel as if you've time traveled back to the roaring 1920s, with the glamours and grandiose lobby. We felt very safe with on-site security 24/7. Our room was a bit on the smaller side but very clean. We loved the high ceilings, the huge closet, the modern bathroom fixtures and that the windows open!
Review 40:Double authorized our credit cards. Huge hassle.
Review 41:Lots of old city charm, little creepy vibe that was appreciated. Hotel cleaners were the best. Wishing everyone good day as people walked up and down the halls.
Review 42:The Rooms are tiered and in need of TLC! The staff at the front desk were not very friendly or welcoming on check in or check out.
Review 43:The Starbucks in the lobby was great as there was no tea and coffee facilities in the room. The man at the concierge was very helpful and friendly.
Review 44:The local of the Hotel is very poor. Very difficult to go out by myself due to the homeless population.
Review 45:I loved the Hotel, very clean, and comfortable.
Review 46:This is an interesting old hotel. It's right at the top of a BART station, so it was easy to get around without having to cab it. I ate at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast and the food was good both times. The lamb chops were excellent. The hotel is not in the best part of the city, but being right on Market makes it convenient to all of downtown San Francisco..
Review 47:Room seemed frayed a bit. Need curtains to get some privacy and darkness in the room in the a.m. Appreciate free Wi-Fi but it is super slow. Price was outrageous which is the only reason I did not stay there for my full time in the Bay Area (8 days). I go home to SF often (there the previous 2 years also) and prices have never been that high!
Review 48:All staff were friendly and helpful. Sadly I lost the name of the person who checked me in when I arrived. I told him it was my birthday the next day and could he give me a nice room so I could sleep in and also have a nice view. He couldn't find one right then but since I had to wait for a room anyway, he said he would find me a room he hoped I would enjoy. He did and the room location was great, despite construction across the street. I appreciated his help very much! Small room, tiny bathroom but workable for one if there were blinds to close on the window. Location great for walking and to get to hotel from the airport & around the City and the East Bay.
Review 49:A bit run-down, could have been cleaner, but not awful. Area is a little rough, but hey! It's San Francisco and SoMa!
Review 50:Close to everything, decent value for the area, staff was friendly.
Review 51:Our room was not in great shape - there was wallpaper peeling from the roof and our toilet was broken and leaking when we first arrived. We were also placed in a room that faced a construction site, so it wasn't always quiet. For the price we paid, it didn't meet our expectations but SF is also an expensive city so maybe this is normal?
Review 52:The hotel is right on historic and central Market St so it's close to shops and Union Square. There's a Starbucks right next to the foyer which is great for on-the-go breakfasts and coffee. You can tell this hotel would have once been a spectacular old building.
Review 53:Parking at the hotel is very expensove but it always is in SF. Getting to the hotel is difficult with the new Market street traffic laning! Not exactly the hotels problem.
Review 54:Despite recent reviews I have read I would say this is a great location and the homeless are really not a problem; and yes San Francisco has many of them. Dinner in the Market street grill is always excellent; we have been there many times. This is a real classic hotel and feels very comfortable to me. I found our room was reall very quiet.
Review 55:The neighborhood is downscale -- but on the way up as more tech firms locate there.
Review 56:Location near the Civic Center is ideal for going to events there: War Memorial Opera House; Davies Symphony Hall; theaters. Hotel is very classy in a non-classy neighborhood. Hotel parking garage is convenient.
Review 57:Waited over an hour for the bell person to come and retrieve our baggage when we were leaving and finally had to take it down ourselves. The security person actually helped us once we got down to the bell desk. No bell staff in sight. Housekeeping even tried calling to get a bell staff person up to help.
Review 58:The location and the general vintage feel of the hotel,
Review 59:They could use a more modern retrofit. The bathroom facilities, while adequate, were a tad dated. Additionally, the outlets were all extremely loose, not the plugs themselves but rather the covers, it can be a little worriesome depending on how well maintained the electrical system may be.
Review 60:It was a nice, interesting building. Having been converted from an old public building it provided some nice high ceilings and architecture.
Review 61:It was very expensive for what you get. i know that SF is en expensive place, but they could at least make some kind of effort for the money - but they don't! Room and bed was small, and lights and safe were not working. The parking valets put one dent and a number of scratches in the rental car, and were pretty rude. WiFi not working.
Review 62:The location was convenient for seeing sanfrancisco. Sam's Diner across the street is a awsome place for breakfast
Review 63:The location had homeless people all over the place and the wifi did not work the entire week I was there with the excuse that it was a full house and the signal would be poor
Review 64:The staff and the rooms were great
Review 65:Area - lot of homeless people Hotel dirty, dark, everything old and lost its spark long time ago In room I had bed bugs and after change to another one I saw mouse running under the bed and hiding there. Third room was ok, but pasted its freshness by 30 years.
Review 66:Old hotel, nice architecture
Review 67:I booked for my family & my friends family and cancelled my reservation at least 3days in advance but still had a reservation for my friends. When they got there they could not find any reservation on any of our names despite our proof of emails & reservation codes. It took them hours to sort things out before they could give them a room. On top of that my friend was charged twice! And now despite my cancellation & not getting a room at all, i checked my credit card transactions and they have also charged me as well! What kind of an establishment is this!?!? And their rates are not cheap at all!! This is so frustrating and dissapointing!!!
Review 68:Nothing!
Review 69:Everything was great except for the noise and the A/C did not work, my husband did not sleep all night, he was very uncomfortable all night. The hotel is beautiful though & the staff are very friendly
Review 70:Hotel interior is dated and the location is suboptimal (many homeless people around/not safe at night).
Review 71:Some staff was friendly. Others not so much. The place was clean.
Review 72:Market street is kind of shady with a lot of homeless but hotel was close to Orpheum theatre which we went to.
Review 73:Very nice Victorian hotel, comfort and style was great.
Review 74:Bad 'hood- lots of panhandlers, homeless - streets are stinky with piss. Not too many close places to eat good food.
Review 75:Awesome location for transit - close to BART and buses.
Review 76:No water/tea/teapot in the room, conditioner produces a lot of noise.
Review 77:The place is relatively cheap for this area, located in a center of SF, room has a locker
Review 78:Terrible wifi that just doesnt work unless you sit in lobby or hallways as I saw some others doing. No refrigerator in room which was very annoying as I had perishables to store. Some staff were downright rude and should look for a career outside hospitality. Others were friendly enough.
Review 79:Good location. Reasonable value for money. Quaint old hotel.
Review 80:The rooms smelled like piss combined with an old, old shower room. It's dingy and gross. The bathroom was old and small. I will neither recommend others there or ever visit again.
Review 81:I liked it a lot when it was over. Everything was difficult from the parking on. It sucks as a hotel.
Review 82:Wifi connection was really poor. I had to go down to the Starbucks to use their wifi which was an inconvenience Visiting from another country means that it is really expensive to roam. Therefore a good wifi connection is needed
Review 83:The staff were very friendly, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Before travelling I read a lot of negative reviews about the location and homeless people - I didn't encounter any trouble at all
Review 84:We did feel, at times, unsafe in the location of the accommodation. The room was probably too small for five people. The fold out bed was terrible - very old and in need of replacement.
Review 85:The hotel itself was beautiful.
Review 86:Need a place for food that does not cost lots of money. The hallways were too dark and the ceiling should be a bright colour. Our toilet seat damaged but no one came to replace it. We told the front desk but it was not replaced.
Review 87:The old world decor and charm was great, the staff is very nice, the parking was good. It was nice to have Starbuck's next door too.
Review 88:San Fran is expensive but even though, the experience in this hotel is not worth it, for me money you pay. Location is awful, homeless all over the place outside. I can not recommend it.
Review 89:The bed sunk in when you layed on it. On The roll out bed you could feel the springs. The bathroom wasn't clean and the vent in the room had mounds of dust and dirt around them.
Review 90:- the wifi didn't work - people kept trying to come into our rooms - usually having been given the keys - it was very expensive - there was a mouse in on our rooms - the staff were unhelpful and unapologetic.
Review 91:Nothing
Review 92:- Lack of mini fridge in room - Free WiFi extremely unreliable, luckily there is an Internet cafe in the hotel if desperate for internets (Charged) - Their vending machines ran out of pepsi's for the majority of our stay (9/10 days out of 14)
Review 93:We enjoyed: - Curteous cleaning ladies - The BART, Muni, trolley and majority of bus stations within half a mile - Concierge
Review 94:The bathroom. Very very small and it only had a old shower with some ofthe worst water pressure ever.
Review 95:The staff was some if the best ever. I felt well taken care of andcomfortable
Review 96:Front of house staff are rude. Bedrooms are dated in a way that isn't quirky but just plain old. Didn't feel it was that clean The actual hotel could be beautiful and has a ton of potential.. Reception staff need replacing!!!
Review 97:Location was ok ... Next time in SF will not stay on market street, but was easy to travel by cable car and tram to the water
Review 98:Window air conditioner was in a bad location next to the bed. No coffee in room or lobby. No view.
Review 99:This hotel was perfectly located for us when we were in S.F. to attend the opera at the War Memorial Opera House. We were able to park the car at the hotel (for a fee) and walk to dinner at the Hayes St. Grill then to the opera house. In the morning we had a great breakfast directly across the street at Sam's Diner. The hotel is quintessential old San Francisco--elegant lobby, small rooms, quality linens, and clean.
Review 100:Dark, dank hallways, mildew around bathtub, wrinkled wallpaper, general disrepair of room. Bad lighting. Exhaust fan in bathroom loud and I asked it to be repaired 3 times. The rate was good but I cannot recommend this hotel. Perhaps this room was reserved for the low rate! Not clean looking (bathroom).
Review 101:The location, even though there are many homeless and seemingly drugged people on the street in front. Near BART station, opera, City Hall
Review 102:There were not enough towels and no soap in the bathroom. I called the desk and they sent the soap right up.
Review 103:I loved the old world charm of the hotel. My room was lovely and the bed was very comfortable. There are Starbucks and a restaurant in the lobby.
Review 104:Standard Queen room was TINY. I stayed 4 days and for three days the shower was a JOKE - like standing under a water hose in your backyard. Went down to the bar one night for a drink and dessert. We were told we couldn't get dessert due to a large tour group coming in and I guess eating all the desert?
Review 105:The location was great (steps from BART, walking distance to shopping). Starbucks in the hotel a bonus. Beautiful lobby. Nice restaurant. The shower was horrible. I left a note on the comment card, intending to drop it off at the front desk at checkout. Housekeeping noticed the note and changed the showerhead, finally leading to an awesome shower!
Review 106:The location of the hotel wasn't clear on booking, it mentions Market Street but it is located in the run down and dangerous Tenderloin district so surrounded by hobos whenever you walk into town. The hotel was very dark and the bed was worn and sunk in the middle
Review 107:The hotel is very historic and in walking distance
Review 108:The location is superp though. Right in market st blocks from union sq and in front of ferrycity stops, that take you in 15 min to fisherman's wharf and ferry.
Review 109:Check in and checkout processes are painful. They normally have just one staff and line gets about 10 to 15 people waiting about 30 min to be assisted. Any other assistance you night need will take you waiting on phone or in line for another 30 min to be poorly treated. Finally, they charged me twice for my stay 2 weeks ago and I still don't have it solved.
Review 110:Wish there was more taxi parking outside when you needed a cab.
Review 111:Location and the varieties of eat outs, wish only that the dinner place would be open on Sunday for dinner because that was my birthday, by anyways..that's ok, the bar close early to.
Review 112:We had to request wash clothes twice. Door was jammed (we were locked in), but was repaired quickly. Fan in bathroom was noisy. WiFi was slow.
Review 113:Location Starbucks in Lobby Room was clean Very Quiet
Review 114:I don't have negative experience in this hotel
Review 115:The most I love the restaurant there and the service in the restaurant, the concierge was very helpful too.
Review 116:Very low water pressure in shower; remote for TV was inoperable.
Review 117:Beds were comfortable...plenty of pillows. Starbucks access directly from hotel lobby. Parking on site.
Review 118:Our room was on side by main entrance and the noise from sirens, horns, buses woke us up several times each night. Not really the hotels fault, but it was annoying.
Review 119:Comfortable bed, nice linens. Friendly personnel. Restaurant staff was very nice, and the late night food served was quite good. Bell Captain was great in storing our luggage for us since we had a late afternoon return flight.
Review 120:Everything dated, limited space in restroom and rooms, everything seems dark, no heater or a/c, I had to pay $70 per night for parking because I have a pickup truck, shower stall extremely small and mildew on walls and floor.
Review 121:Not the best part of town if you want to walk up and down Market Street. Wifi useless. Bathroom door didn't lock shut. Received good deal on room so I am not complaining.
Review 122:Public transportation literally in front of hotel (BART, Bus, Train to wharf).
Review 123:The vallet parking person must have scape our vehicle pumper and did not let us know. We found out at the golden gate parking after we park. We fail to check our vehicle when we left the hotel so we have to suck it up. We only there for 1 night ( less than 10 hrs) and we have new car
Review 124:Historical style hotel
Review 125:No in-room coffee. No face cloths. No hand towels. No bath mat. Water pressure in shower very low. $35 fee for parking.
Review 126:This is a beautiful historic building. It is perfect location if you are in-town to see something in the theatre district. Market Street Grill restaurant and Starbucks are also in the building.
Review 127:Took forever to check in as the was only one person at the front desk, and they were overwhelmed. Unable to reach them by phone from the room the next morning to request a late check out. We were there for an event. Not enough bartenders, and they closed down the bar well before the party was over. Will NOT host another event there. EVER.
Review 128:Great location
Review 129:The only negative was an odor in our room. We were able to leave our window open. It only was an issue for us the first night.
Review 130:Historic hotel with architectural character. A very good value. Super comfortable bed.
Review 131:The room smelled so bad that i can't even understand how it is possible to even offer this room for $260! The management shouldn't even have this room available for rent. I'm disgusted
Review 132:There was no coffee pot in the room or refrigerator. There were several homeless people right outside of the hotel and close by. More than what I have seen in the Sacramento area. It was very sad.
Review 133:Location was close to the Orpheum Theatre.
Review 134:No so much a bad experience, but more of an omission. These was no fitness facilities which would be a worthy addition.
Review 135:Bed was very comfortable and good quality pillows made for a great nights sleep!
Review 136:The front desk agent name James was rude and also the Security guard need to be trained they take there job to serious and it comes across very rude I was going to stay there but after what happen I will never stay there again...
Review 137:The hotel was fine but the area of town had a lot of crime occuring all arround it while we stayed. Car Windows were getting bashed out, wallets being stolen, police foot chases even.
Review 138:The antique looking grandiose entryway and Mirrored hallways were very stunning. Had a sort of haunted mansion feel. Staff was wonderful. Beds were nice.
