Reviews for Hotel Onderbergen
Review 1:We would have loved the heating on before arriving.Despite this, the central heating warmed the room very fast, when we noticed it was off and turned it on.
Review 2:The woman in the reception, and the amazing deluxe room.
Review 3:It was dusty. My wife sneezed compulsively because there were too many allergent sources in the air. For example, the room's chandellier was full of spider webs as well as ceiling's corners and ledges).
Review 4:Beautiful hotel which is very close to ghent's downtown. It had an excellent staff, who were very nice when asked anything (ranging from hotel's information to ghent's general touristic information). Additionally, the hotel possesses a pub which is very nice, where there is delicious food.
Review 5:Hotel has not lobby and is spread across different buildings. Room was on the small side, non-descript, awkwardly placed TV, though we were there to enjoy Gent, so it didn't really matter.
Review 6:Friendly staff, great location, extremely clean
Review 7:No shampoo / soap provided.
Review 8:Very fiendly owners / staff. Spacious apartment. Good breakfast. Nice location, very close to city centre and still quiet.
Review 9:Breakfast very basic
Review 10:very friendly staff, good upfront communication, fast WIFI, located very close to the historical center in a small quiet street. If you come by car don't forget to reserve a parking space
Review 11:only stairs to the rooms and restaurant (luggage) and room 17 can be noisy at night due to open door to stairway if hotel guests aren't quiet. the toilet is not so comfortable as it is cramped next to the heating. TV set not working.
Review 12:modern bedroom, spacy king size bed. free wifi
Review 13:Breakfast was very poor. Warm at best and for €10 you expect more. But was refunded and was all sorted out very promptly.
Review 14:Krystina on desk and email liased with us and helped very much with parking and early check in
Review 15:Parking is not so good if you have a large car.
Review 16:The room was great and the bathroom fabulous. Everyone was really friendly. We recommend this hotel and if in Ghent would stay here again.
Review 17:No bathroom amenities but dispensers. No safe.
Review 18:Perfectly located a short walk a way from the sights and restaurants. Well connected with the tram network and main train station. Helpful staff
Review 19:A bit of noise off street (we were on ground floor) but it is not a main thoroughfare so a very quiet street with mainly foot traffic of locals so not a problem.
Review 20:Fabulous location very near to the historic centre and shopping strip. Nicely furbished and spacious room. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Thanks especially to Jenny at check-in for considering our needs.
Review 21:Next to an Irish pub which we didn't need as there for Belgian rather than Irish experience
Review 22:Staff super helpful. Spacious room, nice shower room. Good advice on restaurants from staff.
Review 23:Room small but adequate for one! If travelling by car - only 3 parking spaces No lounge area but pub next door provides the same facility - able to walk straight through from the hotel to the pub
Review 24:Location right on the canal Next door to excellent Irish pub - Foley's with good food choice. Excellent breakfast Superb staff - welcoming and accommodating
Review 25:The room was right next to the reception so a little noisy in the morning.
Review 26:This cute little places was excellent value for money. The room was newly decorated and very generous for a triple room. Breakfast was great. The location while not directly in all of the action, was very close to it.
Review 27:Bathroom was small. Moldy grout in shower. Very hot water coming out of sink faucet burned my son's hand. This was mention to the staff.
Review 28:Location was incredible. So close to center of town, shops, canals, monuments, historic neighborhood. Friendly staff. Large room was perfect for family of 3.
Review 29:Arrived to a locked front door and nobody answering the bell or phone. Unacceptable. Not an attractive hotel. Rather a collection of out-buildings cobbled together by half external/internal staircases and walkways. There is a pub in the courtyard and we had the misfortune of having a room with a window facing it. Even just 3 patrons resulted in us going to sleep after 1am.
Review 30:Excellent location Very clean
Review 31:Very minor thing but wasn't too keen on last set of stairs going to our room, a bit of a narrow instep.
Review 32:A very friendly and helpful welcome. Great location not in centre but just near enough for a 10 minute stroll. Very comfortable room which was clean with a lovely bathroom that had a bath and a shower! Very happy indeed!
Review 33:A super friendly welcome, along with a stylish and comfortable room. Plenty of space in the family room for two adults and two teenagers. Close to a bakery, pubs and restaurants for meals. Wish we had more time to explore!
Review 34:double bed is actually two single beds together, inconvinient power plugs
Review 35:very friendly and caring staff, breakfast in the restaurant was very good. 7 minute walk to the center of the city, very large room
Review 36:Breakfast is very basic without any fruits or vegetables. Orange juice is superb though. Steps are quite steep, can be tricky to climb, especially after a few of their strong beers...
Review 37:Great hotel close to main sights. It's in a very old building, the inner design of the rooms are magnificent, the staff is extremely helpful and it has a great bar with a very good restaurant. We loved our room on the highest floor, it was so stylish with the old wooden parts.
Review 38:Three decorative mirrors on the wall but they were high up on the wall. There was no 'ordinary' mirror in the room to use with the hairdryer!
Review 39:Good location to explore Gent on foot. Friendly staff.
Review 40:Very helpful and friendly staff. Secure parking (pre-booked!)on site. Very close to town centre and pub/restaurant with simple menu (good breakfasts) conveniently attached to hotel. Thoroughly recommended.
Review 41:It was upsetting to me that we were not given the room that booking.com showed we would have. The room that we stayed in was not nearly as beautiful as the photo. Also, for the price, I felt like breakfast should have been included.
Review 42:The staff were very friendly and the location was excellent.
Review 43:Our room overlooked a quiet backstreet but still only a five/ten minute walk to the busy town centre. Large comfortable room, ideal for a short break in Ghent.
Review 44:Our room was on the 2nd floor (3rd level) and we didn't have an elevator. We understand know the historic significant of the building... but with luggage we like an elevator. The woman behind the desk helped us with our luggage.
Review 45:Staff was friendly.
Review 46:Couldnt complain about the hotel.
Review 47:The hotel was in an ideal location and the local spots were all pointed out when we arrived. Email from the hotel the day before meant that it was easy to get to from the train station. Staff were extremely friendly.
Review 48:Good location...connected with an Irish pub where you can take breakfast, other meals. Drink of courtesy. Specially, the friendliness of the spanish recepcionist which not remember the name. 5 minutes to the historic center in a very nice walking.
Review 49:Very clean and comfortable room. Ours was on the top floor (room 20) and felt like a small apartment. Plenty of space. Extremely friendly and helpful staff (Christina). Would recommend without hesitation.
Review 50:This hotel was expensive. We were initially put in a very small room with bed pushed against wall and view to an alleyway and then were changed to a large family room which felt a bit like a barn. This hotel was expensive and did not meet the star rating it has. It also had no tv's working due to a lightning strike as they described it however this was days before our visit and still no satellite available - not sure if this is a valid excuse in this day an age. No air con either
Review 51:Handiness to town was the only draw card for me at this hotel plus a complimentary drink on arrival at neighbouring hotel (same business I think)
Review 52:No toiletries as ammenities; this ONE trip, i was counting on it, as I didn't bring shampoo or soap.
Review 53:Amazingly large and well appointed room for the price; amazing luxury bathroom with soaker tub and separate, huge full size shower; quiet ( couldnt hear through walls too badly); great location: close enough to Graslei, but yet just far enough away.
Review 54:no elevator because of old building
Review 55:nice fresh rooms, clean bathroom, downstairs a good pub with excellent atmosphere, Alice was very helpfull for late check in and in the bar!
Review 56:Fantastic staff. The owner was informative and welcoming. I was initially worried about location but it is a lovely area only 10 minutes walk from the main square. Bedroom was really large and nice.
Review 57:Stairs are steep to the 2nd floor wouldn't suit everyone as there's no lift so if this is a problem make sure you mention it when booking as the stairs to the 1st floor are much more manageable.
Review 58:Nice modern room with a king size, really comfortable bed. The en-suite was particularly good with high quality fittings and a 1200 x 750 shower. The Hotel rooms are attached to an Irish Bar - Foleys that serves wholesome tasty food, sports on TV etc. The Hotel is adjacent to a canal and within a few minutes walk of the City centre. Buses and Trams abound & though I only stayed 1 night I'm sure I will return. would
Review 59:located by the river, foot walk to town centre, modern design, big windows can ne opened, parking available in premise, associated Irish Pub across the backyard - not noisy though
Review 60:Noise coming from the hallway when people enter other rooms Mosquitos, but I guess these are everywhere in the city due to the canal
Review 61:Very well located Staff helpful and friendly
Review 62:great hotel - very friendly staff, great location right by the river & tram station. Large, clean rooms, comfy beds. Gent itself is a cracking city - an undiscovered (and un-spoilt) European gem !
Review 63:Apartment complex next to the main hotel smelled a bit
Review 64:We arrived super late. Staff was very accommodating. Stayed in apartment with family of 5. Was a great space for us to all stay together. Breakfast in Irish Pub within hotel complex was a nice surprise.
Review 65:The check-in closes very early, and the parking is limited.
Review 66:The location is excellent, within easy walking distance of the central town area. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the wifi was strong.
Review 67:Travel taxes etc not included on website price of room
Review 68:The staff were super friendly. I travelled with my husband and 4 children and our family room was massive! Very comfy beds, lovely decor. We would definitely stay here again
Review 69:the annex is quite basic. 2 double flights of stairs to access room. no covers on the mattresses - they were new beds - so ok for now but not hygienic longer term. the rooms are attached to an irish pub - and breakfast not included in room rate as we thought. Decided to eat a cheaper breakfast at the lovely bakery up the road instead. Reception closes around 7pm - the fire alarm went off just after midnight - all was pandemonium and no-one appeared to be in control - just one guy trying to switch the alarm off! Didn't feel very safe after that.
Review 70:super helpful reception staff and spoke many languages. comfy bed + very clean room
Review 71:Noise from the pub downstairs and people walking down the alley at night. Someone from the pub dumping empty bottles in the middle of the night. Fire alarm that went off just after midnight.
Review 72:location, clean, friendly staff, big family room
Review 73:The spacious room and bathroom. It was very clean and the staff were incredibly friendly. The location was also ideal as it is so close to the centre of Ghent. I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Review 74:I booked hotel for 5 nights , but stayed for 2 nights . It was a Family room for 4 adults , which was very small . Bathroom was very small . Hotel noisy difficulty sleeping , my room was on the ground floor and you can hear people checking in the reception and movement of people on the 2nd floor !! No parking . No elevators . No safety deposit box to place your passport and the reception closes at 7pm !! Room was hot and the windows were overlooking the street with no insect screens , so a lot of Mosquitos can enter the room . Also you can't keep the window open as anybody coming from the street can enter ( I felt unsafe ) . I had to check out on the 3rd day , but I would have checked out on 2nd day , but all hotels were full in Ghent also the hotel refused to refund the remaining nights despite they were not able to address my concerns . The hotel staff are nice but the hotel facilities are poor , the hotel on booking.com is rated 3 stars but it's actually 2 stars . In a nutshell there are higher standard hotels and better price in downtown Ghent .
Review 75:The location of the hotel was close to the canal and city center .
Review 76:None
Review 77:Good location walking short distance to center of interests. The Irish joint pub/restaurant is a great and handy place for evening drink/snack. Room and facilities are clean.
Review 78:Lots if noise and music from the bar downstairs.Air conditioning would have been good as the room got very hot.
Review 79:Nice and close to the town, and friendly staff.
Review 80:The hotel sounded good based on reviews I'd read and it may well be, however the apartment is located a little down the road and is pretty basic. I was disappointed compared to what I was expecting from the pictures on the site. I have fed this back to the hotel and they said they would amend the description.
Review 81:The location, 2 mins walk from the centre was great. The staff were nice.
Review 82:Didn't dislike anything (but note - most rooms are up a flight of stairs - no lifts. This was no incovienience for me but if you have limited mobility then warn them & see if you can arrange a ground-floor room)
Review 83:Likes Very helpful staff. Very useful & informative info sent before arrival. Location - 5 mins walk from centre but on a quiet side street Ghent itself - has everything that Bruges has but without the massive amount of tourists - room to breathe!
Review 84:Internet was difficult to access when we arrived, after a day out of wifi contact and needing to check business e-mails. Tried over period of some hours before we could get connected.
Review 85:Lovely room, fab bathroom, friendly staff. Second visit as we enjoyed it so much first time!
Review 86:Wifi was really poor - there are several sites but none very effective
Review 87:Great location, beautiful and spacious rooms, and a fabulous little Irish pub next door (we ate there each night)! There is no elevator however the Staff were very helpful with carrying bags upstairs.
Review 88:Room was warm. No A/C which was ok but couldn't open windows at night as there are lots of Mosquitos.
Review 89:Great friendly staff. Located not to far of a walk, 5-8 mins, from town centre. Free drink upon arrival! Rooms were clean and updated.
Review 90:Arriving late at night, the street looked a bit dodgy, but the inside was nice. The room was nice sized and the bed was very comfortable and had great sheets. The breakfast was more of a traditional British breakfast, but was very good. The price seemed a bit high until we saw what was being charged at some of the local cafes.
Review 91:Very hot day for the first week of Jul, and unfortunately the apartment style room we had did not have an air conditioner.
Review 92:Location was nice and close to the main tourist attractions. Helpful and courteous staff.
Review 93:Wifi wasn't working, which wasn't a big problem as it was the only downside to our stay, loved it otherwise.
Review 94:Friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms at a fair price and within walking distance of the city center.
Review 95:No lift, bad smell in the bathroom, cold room.
Review 96:Superb staff, spacious nice rooms, well designed interior. A great pub is located in the same location. If you are a couple, you'll enjoy the deluxe room which has a bath in the middle of the room.
Review 97:Make sure you have the directions accessible, we had some trouble locating the property. Our 3rd floor room for 2 was tiny.
Review 98:Good location, a block from the canal. Stored out luggage upon check-out.
Review 99:The breakfast is in the pub which is not nice enough environment but we went elsewhere as the breakfast price at the hotel is separate. Steep stairs to rooms 8 to 12 like going up the Belfort Tower. Only for active people.
Review 100:The room was extremely nice. All new fixtures and fittings, room 8. Very helpful staff. Left luggage in reception on leaving day.
Review 101:Nothing, except more washroom storage needed: hooks and counter space
Review 102:Superb location. Very helpful and friendly staff. Comfortable classic rooms. Excellent reception staff. Loved the high ceilings, felt spacious. Parking was close and reasonable.
Review 103:It is not worthy to reserve parking in the hotel for just one day. Public parkings close to the place charge 11 euros for 24 hours (a bit more expensive than the hotel), but you do not have restrictions on leave hour. Staff was very supportive on this matter, and if no new guests would have arrived we could have parked at the hotel until the end of the day.
Review 104:Staff is very polite and attentive. The place is located really close to the city center. We did not eat in the associated restaurant and we did regret it, it was very cheap and the food did smell delicious.
Review 105:I can't complain really for the price I paid. I would appreciate more if at least a boiler and cups are made available for tea or coffee.
Review 106:No fancy reception but front desk service (specially Ms.Jenny) was excellent. Huge clean room and bathroom to fit family with children. Excellent price compared to other hotel I stayed in. Good location as well.
Review 107:The restaurant only served pub grub, although it was good and well presented.
Review 108:Spacious room, very friendly and helpful staff. Parking was well organised but cost 10 euros.
Review 109:Other guests coming through from the pub and climbing up the metal fire escape all night until 5am. Hotel really needs nighttime security to stop this. Mosquito screens at windows would help - we were eaten alive!
Review 110:Great location, within walking distance of central Ghent. Lovely room, big bed and huge bathroom.
Review 111:The people in the room next to us were very noisy our last night there- not the hotel's fault, just inconsiderate people.
Review 112:Very friendly, helpful and accomodating staff. The 6-bed room was beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Great location to central Ghent.
Review 113:The induction hob was not very good. It didn't work for all pans, and was not hot enough to cook properly.
Review 114:Lots of space with reasonable facilities, which are a bit shabby and in need of updating.
Review 115:TV didn't work very well. No tea/coffee facilities in the room and it's a 10-minute walk from the main historical centre
Review 116:Very friendly staff. Excellent fried breakfast in the Irish pub next door, with which they seem to have some sort of link-up.
Review 117:Breakfast was not included.
Review 118:The hotel was located very near the old district. Short walk which allowed us to be away from the late-night soccer partying. Rooms were modern and comfortable.
Review 119:It is a 4 star hotel and considering the service, it is cheap! Everything was perfect including the room, the bed, the toilet etc. One of the best places that I've seen in Europe.
Review 120:Steep spiral staircase to 2nd floor rooms but worth the climb! Roadworks and intermittent sat/nav signal make getting in and out of Ghent difficult but if you phone hotel, staff will give directions.
Review 121:Lovely room with excellent bathroom facilities, very clean. Parking on site for motocycles. Helpful staff. Irish bar. Good location.
Review 122:We rented the two bedroom apartment and were very impressed with what we got for the money. Comfortable beds, a big bathroom, and a nice sized kitchen. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Review 123:Walls are a bit thin so we could hear our neighbors during the night. Rooms are rather small but you could make do if you're only using it for sleep, not to hang out. Check out at 11 makes it tight for people that like to sleep in. Also, the breakfast is a joke. We did not have it in our package so we had to pay 10 euros each for "all you can eat" buffet which barely had any choice of food: 3 savory warm meals (eggs, sausage and potato cakes), 2 cereals with a rather shady yogurt, croissants and bread. No fruits, no vegetables. There were only 3 tables occupied yet no scrambled eggs left, no glasses for the water, and only a small glass of orange juice brought to the table after 10' of waiting. I strongly recommend having breakfast somewhere else.
Review 124:The staff is very friendly and helpful. Location is great as it's walking distance to the center yet in a quiet and not so touristy area. Rooms are tidy and quiet, bed is very comfortable, bathroom quite big. We considered it a nice touch that we received vouchers for drinks at the Irish bar on the property.
Review 125:Niets, helemaal perfect.
Review 126:Heerlijk hotel in het centrum, alles is op loopafstand. Leuke gezellige kamers met een fijn bed. Dat je de sleutel van de voordeur krijgt zegt eigenlijk alles.
Review 127:It would have been nice to have breakfast in oour room. Anyway it was not too bad since the hotel is physically connected to an Irish pub where the breakfast was good . TV did not work but we had our tablets and WIFI was perfect
Review 128:Staff made you feel that they wanted you there and were very accomodating to my young children. It is smack in the heart of the town and near to parking
Review 129:Top floor room after a day on the bike ;-)
Review 130:Recently refurbished so clean and bright with new fittings all round. Nice helpful staff. Secure bike parking.
Review 131:Windows don't tilt, so you can't leave them open while you're not in the room (ground floor, next to the street). Our room (triple) was on the ground floor, next to reception, we could hear everything people spoke at the reception when they checked out. The reception is closed during the night, so it wasn't noisy in the rest of the stay. It could use some carpets, or other means to dampen the noise on the hall. I found the hair drier only when we left. Why would you leave it in the clothes cupboard instead of putting it in the bathroom? Also, I was expecting some basic toiletries from 3* hotel.
Review 132:Location. Rooms with high ceiling, nicely decorated. Breakfast in the irish pub next door. Parking in the interior garden.
Review 133:We were two floors up in the attic rooms which was fine for us but would have been difficult for some peop as there is no lift and the second flight of stairs is very steep and narrow. No mirrors in the bedroom and my daughter had to climb onto the desk to open/close the window and blind
Review 134:Spacious room. Nice shower room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Short walk from the old town centre
Review 135:It was quite warm and there were no screens on the window....some insect kept buzzing me and keeping me awake. A clock radio with white noise would also have helped. And air conditioning available at all times for attic rooms
Review 136:The beamed ceilings in my room
Review 137:No tea making facilities and we were on the ground floor which seemed very noisy in the mornings. Could not fault the room or the staff.
Review 138:Bed was very big and very comfy.
