Reviews for The Berkeley Hotel

Review 1:They charge you $3 for room service deliveries and they also expect tip. Sounds redundant to me. I mean If I wanna get some eggs just to eat something quick for 9 bucks that's okay. But if you add 3 for delivery, plus taxes, plus tip I end up paying %60 of the price of the meal extra! Also, hot water was not really hot 2 out of 3 nights I stayed.

Review 2:The pillows are just excellent. Good furniture, location, tv, bathroom and the people I very kind as well. Get the Virginia Omelette if you get hungry for something upon arrival.

Review 3:The housekeeper didn't quite finish making up the bed. Stacked all the pillows in a corner on the floor, but the sheets were made up..

Review 4:The Old World atmosphere, especially the furnishings were beautiful. Like a small European hotel. Also enjoyed the balcony overlooking the city. The restaurant serves the BEST crab bisque ever!!!!! Better than in VA Beach.

Review 5:At check-in they should have given us an introduction of all the hotel facilities

Review 6:The location was fantastic. The beds were comfy with lots of down pillows and comforters and the room and bathroom spacious for little kids to enjoy. Staff were courteous and worked with us and the historical maps and prints were classy.

Review 7:See above.

Review 8:The waitress was very personable and friendly. As was the head chef. We thought the food was a little expensive and the room a little small and it didn't have much natural light.

Review 9:We stayed two nights, and each night we were awakened by noises on the street outside..the first night it was people leaning the bars around 2:00 and the second night it was some sort of construction/garbage collection equipment around4:00/5:00. Very distracting.

Review 10:The accommodations are lovely, nice furnishing and atmosphere in the rooms. I would stay here again for those, plus the location is very convenient to all the sites I wanted to see in downtown Richmond.

Review 11:Nothing to do with the hotel but the Trolley Tour is not good value for money. Richmond would be much better off with an open top bus Tour as your view is very restricted on the trolley

Review 12:Really good location in the historic area, lots of places to eat

Review 13:Can be a bit noisy from bars and restaurant activity but rooms are well insulated.

Review 14:A small old fashioned style hotel but an anachronism in a market that has turned to modern boutique chic. I guess there are still some people who like pseudo antiques and period furnishings. It was well designed and looked recently refurbished. They accept dogs but it cost. Just a stroll from the Capitol gardens.

Review 15:Room rather dark, could do with brighter lights, but otherwise excellrnty

Review 16:Staff extremely helpful getting me fresh milk and breakfast teabags for the room, I don't drink coffee. Very good service at reception and in the dining room where we had a very pleasant supper.

Review 17:We were there on a weekend, and it was very noisy (from the nightlife on the street) until very late.

Review 18:Great location, easy to walk to the Capitol, Shockhoe Bottom, the riverfront to look at the murals, and easy access to 95. Loved all the historical VA maps throughout the hotel. Very pleasant and knowledgeable staff.

Review 19:We enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and the beautiful ambiance of the hotel. The location made it easy to see interesting parts of Richmond without using our car.

Review 20:We stayed over the weekend- suspect much more activity during the work week. Many businesses had limited hours and closed on weekend.

Review 21:Historic atmosphere in a great location for dining, touring some state and confederate era landmarks, slave trail, tobacco and cotton industries.

Review 22:Hotel was very old...room was small, bed very uncomfortable. Our room looked into an alley with trucks unloading in the alley at six in the morning. Not good!

Review 23:Location

Review 24:There was nothing to "not" like.

Review 25:Fantastic location in a hip historic area of Richmond! From the moment of our arrival, until our departure we were treated exceptionally well.

Review 26:The curtains wouldn't close completely....very noisy corner especially after 12 midnight.. maybe the earplugs in the night stand were a good clue

Review 27:The valet parking and bell hop

Review 28:When we arrived to check in we were told there was a problem with the locks on the doors and they were going to put us up at the Omni across the road. This was accomplished with minimal fuss, staff was very polite, and we were not chargde for the night's stay because of the inconvenience. We thought that your staff handled the situation extremely well.

Review 29:Valet was fast and friendly but also expensive to use. No street parking in the area. You have to park either with valet or a parking garage.

Review 30:Enjoyed the stay. My husband and I were out and about for the entire weekend so we didn't get to try out the bar or restaurant sadly.

Review 31:The front desk did not greet me coming or going. I asked a Bell Captain if he could call me a cab and he sent me across the street to the Omni to hail my own. I walked into the bar about 8pm one night and sat for five minutes without any staff around. A group of 4 was having drinks so I knew they weren't closed. I ended up going across the street for food and drink. The staff would come to the room to leave chocolates and barely knock before letting themselves in. It was disconcerting.

Review 32:The room was very clean and comfortable. Shane, one of the Bell Captains, was awesome and helpful as was Katt(?), one of the bartenders. Housekeeping was sweet and helpful although inconsistent in how the room was left.

Review 33:$21 valet parking a bit steep.

Review 34:Very comfortable spacious, beautifully appointed room. Especially friendly, helpful staff. Easy on/off of I-95/64 but in a quaint, historic district. Food was excellent....we could have shared one short ribs dinner....as we saw others doing. We will be back...great short stop traveling through Virginia...may stay a few days next time.

Review 35:I arrived late and would have liked something light to eat, but there is no room service after 10 p.m., no vending machines and no mini-bar or snack basket in the room.

Review 36:The valet who parked my car and helped with my bags on Wednesday night was very nice.

Review 37:Outside noise is unavoidable for the location, but it took some getting used to. Would have liked extra blankets in the room, but I'm sure we could have easily called for them. Also,

Review 38:We loved the size of the room, the bed was comfortable, the staff was patient and helpful. The location was very nice for our purposes (Junior Olympics), as well as if we had wanted to tour. The restaurant was acceptable, and there were several excellent choices, of all prices, within two blocks.

Review 39:Paper cups in room for coffee;affects taste and looks cheap. Bath towels small. Again, too cheap looking for 'boutique' hotel at this price.

Review 40:Location convenient for walking. In one of the historic neighborhoods. Resturants and wine bars close. Staff pleasant.

Review 41:The room did not have a fridge. We did not have a nice view. Bed was uncomfortable. Service was slow and too casual.

Review 42:Location was good. Restaurant food was tasty. Storage was good.

Review 43:Please note that the toilet in #603 was not mounted to the floor sufficiently. The toilet was loose from the floor.

Review 44:The size of the room was excellent #603

Review 45:My two friends and I arrived at the Berkeley Hotel and we were delighted with our rooms, our welcome and our help from the front desk. What good people and what comfortable rooms.

Review 46:The traffic outside my window at 5am. Not the hotels fault, next time I will bring my earplugs!

Review 47:Absolutely everyone was outstanding, from the valet service to the front desk staff,(both shifts) to house keeping. They were the most helpful and courteous I have ever experienced. Thank you.

Review 48:We had to change rooms on arrival due to noise from a water system. The parking charges were expensive.

Review 49:The rooms were large and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 50:Draperies didn't close completely, making it impossible to get the room completely dark.

Review 51:Location, very helpful staff, appealing ambience, and comfort of the room

Review 52:I needed an in room Fridge to Ice my Knee twice daily... used ice from hallway Ice machine to cool my knee gel pack... to be fair I did not ask for a fridge. Also privacy of balcony was not there. Strangers were on the balcony outside our room. Had to keep drapes drawn.

Review 53:Staff was very helpful with any request we made. Great for sleeping. Great pillows. Bathroom was very roomy.

Review 54:Booking .com! We arrived to find the hotel had no record of our reservation from booking.com! Fortunately they were not sold out AND the clerk was very friendly and accommodating and fixed the problem. The clerk also honored the booking.com price.

Review 55:Hotel was amazing and very friendly. We arrived very tired after a stressful day of travel and checking into our room with a balcony was exactly what we needed. The room was beautiful, very spacious, and clean. Top notch front desk employees that were friendly and swift to fix our reservation that was never received from booking.com

Review 56:Had to valet your car for added cost, which is life in the big city. But it wasn't much of a hassle.

Review 57:Location near so many restaurants! Charming decor. Friendly, helpful staff. Very comfortable place.

Review 58:We were on a side street and the garbage was picked up at 5:45 every morning. Next time i would ask for a room either on a higher floor or opposite of the side street

Review 59:The rooms were spacious and the bed was one of the best ever. The staff couldnt have been friendlier.

Review 60:Nothing

Review 61:Fabulous staff that ho out of their way to get the right thing done!

Review 62:Not able to get the room we booked because of our dog

Review 63:Great location

Review 64:It's a historical building. So it's a bit aged

Review 65:The staff was very pleasant.

Review 66:Location and comfort

Review 67:Charming

Review 68:noisy at night

Review 69:Comfortable and quiet rooms in a great location.

Review 70:Located across street from clubs so it was loud at night until 3 am. Hard to sleep.

Review 71:Great dinner and staff.

Review 72:Centrally located. Walk or short ride to everything we needed. Staff is better than great.

Review 73:Some rooms have a window facing a roof top.

Review 74:Great location. Good value.

Review 75:Arriving by car can be congested for check-in due to downtown location.

Review 76:Close to historic Richmond and convenient for restaurants

Review 77:The people at the front desk were very helpful

Review 78:You could hear a lot of noise in the halls and on the street.

Review 79:Great location and great price. The room is more than adequate and I loved free wifi.

Review 80:Not great front desk staff

Review 81:Old time charm

Review 82:I thought the bed was too soft

Review 83:Restaurant , and accomadations

Review 84:The hotel is in a tourist location. We would have rather been located in a less touristy area.

Review 85:Comfortable bed and generously sizes room

Review 86:No usb jacks in room

Review 87:It's conveniently located in downtown Richmond. Staff was very friendly. Upscale but not stuffy.

Review 88:Had a conference nearby and wanted a very comfortable stay. The Berkeley delivered.

Review 89:Dated looking furnishings

Review 90:Large room Excelent helpful staff Great bed

Review 91:room was small

Review 92:location, the friendliness of the staff

Review 93:staff was inattentive especially in restaurant

Review 94:location

Review 95:nothing

Review 96:everything

Review 97:Our windows looked at brick wall next door but it was private

Review 98:We had a very large room

Review 99:pillows could have been better

Review 100:Size of room. Location. Cleanliness.

Review 101:A great place to stay.

Review 102:All of the staff, from the front desk to the housekeepers, were extremely friendly and welcoming. Also, we had a problem with our first room. The front desk put us in a new room and gave us a parking credit for our trouble.

Review 103:The price was ridiculous. The room was tiny, the view of the brick wallwas horrible. Our toilet was running all night. Thin walls, loud icemachine. I would have rather stayed at a super 8....at least then Iwould have only paid 50 bucks for all of the same perks

Review 104:I booked a king room and when I confirmed my reservation only 5 mins. later by phone I was told they only had a room with 2 double beds available.

Review 105:The room was very clean and the staff was nice.

Review 106:Location was perfect for historical touring, one block from tour company, and in a charming cobblestone streets area of restored old buildings converted into, among other things, many restaurants, bars and cafes.

Review 107:No bathroom fan. Very soft bed. Expensive parking. In room coffee-maker makes just one cup...with paper cups. A little tacky for such an upscale hotel.

Review 108:Great location. Very helpful and attentive staff. Comfortable, spacious room. Elegant lobby area and overall decor. Nice bed linens.

Review 109:My stay was too short and my husband couldn't join me to enjoy the hotel.

Review 110:This is a delightful hotel where you are greeted as a friend the minute you walk in and are treated as though you are special. It is such a refreshing change from large chain hotels. WAY better than the Omni across the street!

Review 111:The Wi-Fi kept going off after a couple of minutes and then you had to reconnect.

Review 112:The accomodations were very nice and quiet. We were located to many restaurants and the area felt safe.

Review 113:Parking was ok but inconvenient

Review 114:Everything was super Staff. Room. Breakfast. Location service very nice accomodation very nice glad we stayed two nights

Review 115:The water pressure in the shower was horrible.

Review 116:Desk staff greeted us warmly and wished my husband a happy birthday (I had mentioned on my reservation). They upgraded us to a room with a balcony and extended our check out by an hour. The room service hot fudge sundae was delicious!

Review 117:I didn't like the worn and dated chairs in the room and tv cord on back of TV kept falling out.

Review 118:I really like the location of the hotel and hotel staff were pleasant and professional.

Review 119:Very pretty hotel, nice staff and perfect location. Less than a block to a great coffee/ breakfast spot -- The Urban Country Market and Café. Close to plenty of bars and restaurants. Would definitely stay here again!

Review 120:Only "complaint" about staff was valet parking. Got there at 3pm and valet was nowhere to be found. Waited and ended up leaving my keys with front desk. In morning, he got my car but did not offer to help with bags. Not a problem....I had one bag....but I thought it unusual from other experiences. Not enough to keep me from coming back.

Review 121:Nice hotel....great for what I paid. Clean rooms, bar/restaurant nice.

Review 122:I had trouble finding the hotel. Ricmond has so many one way streets and they are not well marked. Once there we were happy with the hotel accomodations. The staff was friedly and helpful too.

Review 123:We stayed in room # 306. I'd stay there again; beautiful room with adelightful view of Shockoe Slip! The only complaint about the room isthe squeak of the door. It sounds like the call of a Banshee. Since wewere there for a wedding, we did come in late and were worried we'ddisturb the other guests around us by simply opening the door. The onlyother thing that I did not like was the check out. When we arrived toThe Berkeley Hotel on 10/19/13, the woman who checked us inassured me that I could pay the bill to any card I wanted upon checkout.Since The Government finally allowed employees back to work, I wouldhope you could appreciate our circumstances. When we checked out onMonday, 10/21/13, the man behind the counter did not ask us howwe wanted to settle the bill. [On our original bill, he's listed astCashier #48.] He, in fact, said nothing at all except: "Checkingout?" and then ran our bill to the card I had set down forincidentals. [We got our room through Booking.com, I had thought I hadbeen told that we would be charged the entire rate of the room upon mybooking through their website; apparently I was mistaken. Unbeknowst tome, since I thought the card had already been run, I didn't bring italong with me to Richmond.] When I balked at his running the bill to mycard I had only put down for incidentials, he got short with me. Ineither raised my voice to him, nor did I insult him. I was amazed athis behavior. He then went to get assistance to help reverse the bill.He stepped to the back of the house; I heard him converse with acolleauge and she said that he'd run the wrong card. He said that itwasn't a matter of having run the incorrect card...I Heard theentire conversation.

Review 124:We used to live in Richmond in the 90's and it's always apleasure to be able to return to return to the River City. The woman whochecked us in was friendly, informative, & engaging. I felt our roomwas beautifully appointed. The Hotel is exquisite! Overall, staff wasvery helpful and proactive. We chose The Berkeley Hotel because of itsdesirable location to Shockoe Bottom; where our friends were havingtheir wedding ceremony & reception. We felt staying at The BerkeleyHotel was going to be a terrific and welcome splurge after beingfurloughed by the Goverment. What a beautiful hotel!! We so enjoyed ourmini-vacation in such a beautiful environment.

Review 125:Our room was large, inviting and comfortable. Staff was cordial and helpful. Nice linens and towels. Everything was clean and in good working order.

Review 126:The Berkeley is where we always stay in Richmond - an older sort of boutique hotel, quiet, wonderful staff, good food, well-appointed and gracious. It is well-located, easily accessible, and the service is impeccable.

Review 127:The ad for the hotel said continental breakfast was included, but it wasn't.

Review 128:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Location was good, although lots of construction going on in area
