Reviews for The Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina
Review 1:The air condition/heating system was a little slow in getting the room warm and had an odor but did work fine after that and we got use to the odor
Review 2:Very convenient to the downtown area where you could walk to all the shops and restaurants. We had parking included in the price which is a great bonus. The room was comfortable and clean.
Review 3:The rooms were small and rather run-down. The kitchen burnt our food black. That food should never have been served to a customer.
Review 4:Location on the water, convenient to Thames St shops
Review 5:Our room was not serviced by the maid and it was disappointing to have to pick up towels at the desk and make our own bed at a luxury hotel that clearly includes those services in the room pricing. We were told there were new housekeepers who had trouble fulfilling their duties. While we understand this can happen it seemed there were too many excuses being given when we paired that with the mornings truly awful breakfast experience at the hotel that was explained away by an apologetic kitchen manager as 'new cooks' left unsupervised for a moment. The two incidences led us to wonder if there was truly an epidemic of new employee errors or a more troubling case of off season lowered standards of service. The front desk staff was pleasant but seemed to feel that the fact we got towels made up for the lack of maid service. We were also disappointed to be charged more for parking at the hotel than what the local lots were charging for all day parking. Overall the experience was a bit of a disappointment.
Review 6:The view and location overall were very nice.
Review 7:Hot cider was empty No coffee in the morning or restaurant staff The pool was in poor condition/maintenance Water should be included in the price. Its insulting to be charged $4 for a bottle in the room. Thin walls/loud
Review 8:Location and view nice town
Review 9:OMG Check in was at 4pm Our room wasn't ready to after 5pm The bed are old and cheap. The children jumping and yelling in the rom next door. It didn't stop to midnight. No glasses No sugar for coffee. They charge for parking. The Salt Water harborside dinning room staff was slow and forgot things. The pancakes were hard. Young children yelling and running around the bar area. Couldn't get near the fire place to sit and have a glass of wine. It was a day care area with no supervision. I hit my head on the soap dish in the shower because it was to high. Old tub and shower.
Review 10:The room was not as clean as I would have liked. There was a lot of hairs and the bathroom needed a good mopping. Also, the bathroom near the pool area needs a major update. The rooms were also very noisy, and could hear everything going on in the hallways.
Review 11:The location was close to everything we wanted to do and the view of the harbor was beautiful.
Review 12:Having to pay for parking in the lot owned by the hotel was off-putting $8/day above room fee and added taxes. Unacceptable. I'm sure they make plenty of money during peak summer season charging more than that to tourists for parking in their large lot. Restaurant food mediocre and overpriced, although the dining room with glass panels overlooking the harbor is beautiful.
Review 13:The hotel staff were welcoming and conversational, greeting us always when we passed. Beth, wait staff at breakfast, was exceptional. Being a "local" helped us with places to see and gave us exceptional service. She's a keeper. Walking distance to the wharves and Thames street-wonderful.
Review 14:The couple next door was very loud..the bed head board are apparently on the same wall. They woke us up Saturday evening. We said something to the front desk. Sunday morning we woke up to the banging on the wall again. Said something to the front desk and they kinda just laughed it off. Not funny ! If I wanted to here an adult film would have rented one ...but it was live.
Review 15:The coffee maker in the room worked sporadically. The wallpaper in the bathroom was not very inviting.
Review 16:Our room had a beautiful view. The service was very good. We took advantage of the free Wi-Fi.
Review 17:Had to have booking.com straighten out an error on hotel's partregarding room. It was first come first serve (which is dumb) but theoptions were a king size bed or 2 doubles. When I called to check theygave us a room with one double bed.
Review 18:Convenience to Newport Mansions. Easy to get to.
Review 19:Paying $8.00 a day for parking during December is a little ridiculous since there was only approximately a dozen vehicles in the lot at any given time.
Review 20:Breakfast in the hotel's restaurant was a great way to start our day. Beth our server was very friendly and knowledgeable on the local history of Newport.
Review 21:I was able to hear the children in the other room as well as the adults - walls are very thin, it sounded like they were in OUR room using the bathroom. Is there a way that if a couple is coming in NOT to place them around rooms that have young children? Just a suggestion, I would have slept a lot sounder (because the bed was very comfortable) if it wasn't for the young kids on each side of us...
Review 22:Location & the view
Review 23:Check-in is at 4pm but room was not available before 5pm disturbing our schedule. Showers at the pool were very dirty, no towels available.
Review 24:The heated swimming pool. The location and the parking close to the harbour and city center.
Review 25:There is only one small elevator for all the floors so we have to use the stairs or wait to much time for an empty elevator in which we can fit specially with bagd
Review 26:You have a warm pool that the kids can use
Review 27:Parking was difficult. One of us had to get out of the car before parking and direct the other into the parking space to avoid scraping a car on either side. Also, we could not control the temperature in the room. It had a mind of its own, too cool when awake and too hot when sleeping.
Review 28:We liked the cleanliness. Everything was clean to sight and touch. Great location.
Review 29:Paper thin walls. No plugs for electronics no DVD player old ceilings with damage. Drawers and all pamphlets with stains and dirty
Review 30:Nice location yummy complimentary apple cider
Review 31:The room I booked on booking.com was not the room I stayed in. False adverizing by booking.com. The pictures of room do not represent the actual room.
Review 32:The front desk staff is excellent. Victor also very helpful when I booked another date for January. He made sure I got a good rate. That is what will keep my wife and I coming back
Review 33:The hotel was fine but the restaurant (Saltwaters, or something like that) was not good. The clam chowder was great but the rest of dinner was so-so. Breakfast was terrible. Something like $10+ for one waffle that could have been made anywhere and a bowl of bland strawberries that still had part of the stems on them.
Review 34:The room was ridiculously small. Our room was located on the first floor and we heard every noise from inside and outside the hotel at all hours of the night. For the price, I could have stayed elsewhere with more room and no noise.
Review 35:The location is great. It's centrally located in the heart of downtown Newport.
Review 36:The walls of the rooms were paper thin, every time the person in the next room went to the lav, I heard it. The maid did a terrible job on the second day. Bathroom was atricious. I was also shocked to see the rate went from 149 per night to 269 per night
Review 37:The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant.
Review 38:I really didn't like the automatic $20 fee for parking that was NOT disclosed in hotel literature.
Review 39:Location, friendliness of staff, and comfort was excellent.
Review 40:Nothing
Review 41:The staff were welcoming and helpful The dining room servers were efficient and pleasant The location can not be beat Close to shops and restaurants and waterfront
Review 42:Restaurant was ok, but took ages for food to arrive & my dish had a very strange take on miso broth. The other meals were good - filet Mignon & lemon scallops.
Review 43:Room was spotless and view of the harbour was lovely. Sunset was amazing. Very nice indoor pool, could have been a bit warmer, but was still great. Breakfast arrived on time, was hot & delicious.
Review 44:All good! That's so rare...
Review 45:location is fantastic: Bannister and Bowen wharves next door. Great staff and the restaurant is good too. We experienced above and beyond service. All good. We will be back and splurge for a suite! Best views from second floor.
Review 46:The pillows were very uncomfortable. During breakfast the waitresses were terrible. The older woman would disappear and only come back after Jonathan already checked on the customers. It was clear she didn't want to be there.
Review 47:The view was beautiful! Courtney at the front desk accommodated us and bumped us to a room with a king which was great! The man working at the restaurant, Jonathan I think his name was, was wonderful! He was great with customers and basically was running the restaurant alone during breakfast but was very efficient! I would recommend this hotel to friends.
Review 48:F&B, Sunday night bartender was average, Supervisor did not support him as the bar became busier and they ran out of Lobster, and did not tell the bartender until after he sold it. Menu was limited.
Review 49:Location and GSA was nice
Review 50:I expected a harbor view room on the first floor as shown in the pictures on the website. When I booked I requested the bottom floor. When I got to the hotel I was informed I would have to pay an additional $20 for the room. The deal on booking.com was really not that great for the room and pricing posted. Also the rooms and hallways were very old looking and it was almost impossible to open the sliders to the outside - totally rusted. Small bathrooms and bed very uncomfortable . Would probably not book there again
Review 51:The location is perfect and the harbor views beautiful.
Review 52:Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, great restaurant, and convenient location- within walking distance to downtown Newport. This is the 2nd year in a row we have stayed here & look forward to returning next year.
Review 53:Hotel is older - the windows are small and don't take advantage of the beautiful harbor view.
Review 54:great location - easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Centrally located.
Review 55:Other reviews are correct, this is a clean yet tired property. To the owners: Sounds nit picky, but you really notice 7-10 coats of paint in the bathroom, stained grout, poorly applied caulking, cracked tub, paint splatter on the floor - things not seen in a Holiday Inn Xpress. You feel better about spending your money when details are looked after. Laundry bins in the stairwell (fire inspections?), old/tired locker room and shower area near pool and sauna. I know it's October, but plant some fall flowers, it shows you care.... 1st time Newport experience was great, we enjoyed our time and we will go back, leaving the rose colored glasses at home....
Review 56:Location, great harbor views ! Front Desk accommodated a room change request ! Option of using hotel restaurant. Free wi-fi, good selection of cable channels Spacious room, iron, hair dryer, toiletries.
Review 57:Night staff not so good. Vending machines were not stocked accurately orwere out and night staff basically said not our responsibilitythey're not owned by us. Room service @ 8pm went to voicemail withnever a return call.
Review 58:Daytime staff were excellent and very customer satisfaction oriented.Location was the best.
Review 59:The rooms are a bit old, the bathroom especially. The pillows and bed not very comfortable.
Review 60:The location was fabulous. The proximity to shops and taverns was great. Waking up in the morning to a view of the sea was outstanding.
Review 61:We were a bit concerned as some reviews were less than stellar. Maybe new management now -but we were delighted with all aspects of our stay. Our room overlooking the water was IMMACULATE. The view was wonderful. Staff could not have been more helpful. Already planning a return trip.
Review 62:We moved the next night to the Newport Mariott . Then they offered us another room. We are still waiting for the credit to our credit card. Moving to the Martiott was like night and day.
Review 63:Terrible experience. They gave us s tiny little room with a single bed. When we complained they blamed the mistake on you. For the outrageous price they charged us ahead and would not make any offer to change the room.
Review 64:We ordered room service from the restaurant. They tried to make the clam chowder fancy with whole clams, roasted onions in center and a smear of soup on the bottom. Go traditional!!!
Review 65:Location
Review 66:Given the cost of the room. it should have been maintained better ie peeling wallpaper, dirty bathroom. There was no fridge/microwave in room. And you are charged if you drink the bottle of water that were supposed to be in the room but actually were not. Advertised free WIFI, but it was horrible!
Review 67:Location was great. Staff was friendly
Review 68:I have stayed many times in the past. The value was better in the past. this time I felt I was nickled and dimed to the max. Pay $10 per 12 hours to park? $20 per day to park is ridiculous, I am a guest, should have been free parking. Was not allowed to byob to the area outside hotel as a guest, all we wanted was to sit and enjoy the nice night where the heaters were but could not. We were guests of the Hotel. So no where to go. One of the party had a bum foot so was unable to walk far, would have been nice to be able to sit outside like that but no facility needed money for us to do that. Housekeeping never touched our room until 5pm on Sat after we had been gone ALL DAY. Then they wanted to come in when we got back, Just said no thanks too late now, we needed to get ready for dinner , etc. I just felt that I was required to pay for everything. I won't return to this Hotel and I won't recommend it. Too much out of pocket on top of very high prices to begin with.
Review 69:Location is great
Review 70:The location was perfect and the staff were awesome. they even let us check in a bit early. So helpful with a map of Newport and so approachable. We loved it! We will definitely stay again and recommend it to friends. :)
Review 71:Not worth the $500 per night stay. Room was very small bathroom was notclean rug was dreadful. The hallways smelled like a septic tank andmilldew. The shower leaked. The hotel is not a four or five star hotel. It is a lucky to get a 2.
Review 72:I did not like anything about this hotel.
Review 73:We could hear every single noise from every room within the hotel. Wehad to have our room changed and it didn't make it any better. Theycharged me an extra $100 for incidentals. When they went to reimburse methey reimbursed me twice then charged me again, a total disaster.
Review 74:The staff was very polite and friendly.
Review 75:Service in bar was slow and the bar was not busy and they didn't carry any of the beers we liked. We left without ordering any drink.
Review 76:Comfy rooms and good location.
Review 77:None, but the restaurant was undergoing alterations and we were served in a temporary location. Food and service was still excellent!!
Review 78:Location next to the Newport Boat Show!!
Review 79:Very poor value for expensive room Staff very disinterested and rarely visible. Breakfast restaurant very poor. Food cold and very poorly presented. Staff untrained and little knowledge of menus. Management disinterested. Rooms old and in need of attention for the price. Bed good.
Review 80:Very little
Review 81:This is an old property that could use a major refresh. A/C was loud and hard to regulate, tiny bathroom with fiberglass insert shower, old furniture, old decor, no-name (literally) bath products, and worn-out chairs on small terrace.
Review 82:Maintenance quickly fixed A/C control box (but of course could not do anything about how loud it was) and front desk staff was friendly.
Review 83:A perfect location to enjoy Newport and the marina. The rooms were more than adequate and the staff was helpful. Always ask for a window facing the harbor- room seems much bigger. Loved the boat show
Review 84:Parking at the hotel is not included into the cost of the room. Based on the price, we expected the rooms to be nicer than they were. Walls were very thin - could hear the neighbors.
Review 85:The staff was really nice and friendly. The hotel was pretty clean and located right at the center of everything.
Review 86:It was not a bad experience but we would rather have had an outdoor pool then an indoor pool. Also, for the money the room was very small.
Review 87:It was very convenient and we only had to use the car once.
Review 88:Rooms were nice and clean, but a little dated and the Mattress and pillows were hard as a rock.
Review 89:Front Desk bent over backwards to make our stay enjoyable, very helpful and polite. Location is right in the middle of everything you can walk everywhere and shops and restaurants are right at your door.
Review 90:Didn't like having to pay 20 dollars per day extra to park in hotel parking lot. Rooms were nice and spacious and clean, but no real wow factor for the money.
Review 91:Location was fantastic!!! Right in the middle of everything... Beautiful setting.
Review 92:Staff where great . Customer service second to none.
Review 93:We had a room on ground floor sea view it was fab . Opened door and we had it all. sea ,view , and very posh boats.
Review 94:This is a way overpriced Holiday Inn level hotel in a great location. We paid $651 for one night and parking. No extras. For that price the facility needs to be first class. This hotel and the room was second class.
Review 95:The staff was friendly no matter who you met, from front desk, house cleaning or security everyone greeted you with a smile and a hello. A special thanks to Nicolette for going above and beyond to make us feel at home. Location was perfect.
Review 96:Hidden $20 parking fee that was not made aware in the booking. The cable TV had switched over to digital signal, and the signal was terrible to the point you couldn't watch certain stations at all. Called guest services and they said "there was nothing at all they could do to help".
Review 97:Great location to downtown Newport shops and restaurants. Beautiful view of the Marina.
Review 98:We had to wait over half an hour to check in as our room wasn't ready, front desk seemed chaotic and the hotel seemed understaffed.
Review 99:The view, the indoor pool. The location.
Review 100:Housekeeping was horrible. The dirty laundry was outside of my room from the time I checked in until I checked out, and I stayed 2 days. House keeping didn't come to my room until 5PM to change anything. It was too late by then. I got my own towels.
Review 101:I liked the location, the staff at the desk and the bartender and wait staff.
Review 102:We booked a ground floor (walk out) harbor view with a king bed. The room was spotless, and the view was lovely. All of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. We ended up going to the bar at the hotel and the bartender was very friendly and fun. We would definitely book at this hotel again!
Review 103:We booked a room with a balcony, which was very important to us. Instead we got a room with a window and we were told they never give the balcony rooms to people who book using third party vendors. So beware they only have a handful of balcony rooms so don't count on one.
Review 104:Location is amazing and you can walk to everything. Hotel is clean.
Review 105:No room safe, no do not disturb notice, paper cups, no fridge. Slow service. Outside dining room like a garage. Hotel appears poorly managed and relying on location.
Review 106:Location and view
Review 107:My grandson (9 years old) and I were in Room 308. At 2:00 in the morning the couple next to us a a very loud argument with a lot of swearing and slamming of doors until he finally walked out slamming the door and left sometime after 3:00. She called him on the phone at 3:15 and continued the argument and at that tie was sobbing quite loudly. I could not sleep and was very grateful that my Grandson never woke up, especially with the language that was used. I know this had nothing to do with your Hotel but just had to get this off my chest. I loved the Hotel and my Grandson already wants to go back next year. Also I went to the Salt Water in the morning to get an egg, bacon, cheese sandwich and had to wait at least 40 minutes ( I waited at the restaurant.) :-)
Review 108:The room was very comfortable and clean. The location was ideal - everything in walking distance. Never had to move my car.
Review 109:At $459/night, this hotel was not cheap. I expected to be wow'd and was't. When we checked in, the woman checking us in told us that we were being upgraded to a better room than the King, Harbor View Room that we had booked on a higher level floor. She said it had a veranda. We were very pleased but soon disappointed to realize that the "upgrade" was just around the corner from the front desk and along the same hallway as the pool. We could easily hear the constant sounds of people checking in, walking to the pool and the hallway music outside of our room. When we entered the room, the veranda was a sliding door that led to 2 chairs on a bit of grass that the rooms next door all shared, along the crowded dock that was always occupied by people working out, walking by or hanging out on their boats. Being in this room was like being in a fish bowl. It allowed for zero privacy if we wanted to let any sunlight into our room. Being on the first floor also greatly took away from our view because the large boats docked right outside our window, blocked us from seeing the harbor. Almost immediately, my husband went to request our room be changed back to the room we requested but the same woman that checked us in said it was no longer available and the hotel was fully booked. He called her bluff and demanded to have our room changed. Shocker… There was one room left! We changed rooms and were so happy we did. As we were leaving the hotel a short time later, we saw her pulling the same "upgrade" stunt on a another couple. The hotel decor needs to be updated and areas cleaned up. Details need to be better noted like painting or atleast cleaning up the walls of scuffs and marks and cleaning the bathroom floor. The free Wifi was horrendous. Location was great but wouldn't stay there again.
Review 110:Great location. Firm, comfy bed. Windows open to screens for fresh air.
Review 111:No ventilation in below par bathroom. Charge of $4 for a bottle of water outrageous when hotels in that price range usually provide it as part of turndown. Car parking charge of $20 also unacceptable.
Review 112:Location & bedroom view over harbor amazing. Lovely open air dining by harbor.
Review 113:Excellent location near everything but not noisy Staff very professional and friendly Restaurant wonderful for breakfast right on marina but again peaceful with Great food and service
Review 114:Several things in our room were in disrepair. The slider to outside, bathroom sink and tub did not drain, bathroom sink stopper was broken. The Salt Restaurant had the worst service and food was terrible!!
Review 115:Outside seating near marina
Review 116:Terrible serice at salt water. Food not very good. Having the room cleaned at 4 in the afternoon was unacceptable. The room was too crowded for 4 ppl and should not be sold that way. No room for a air mattress. I did not Like being in the 1st floor.
Review 117:The deck.
Review 118:Never a bad experience
Review 119:Location, Location, location.....Park the car on your day of arrival, no need to find your car until your departure date... So convenient to restaurants, and shopping
Review 120:Our room was not cleaned. Had to call the front desk. The air conditioner would make a loud bang from time to time. Two outlets did not work
Review 121:I don't know if the maid just forgot about us but our room didn't get cleaned and we had to ask for fresh towels
Review 122:The location and most of the staff. I liked the fact that we received a paper in the am.
Review 123:Can use a little updating.
Review 124:Location! Smack in the center. Convenient to everything and secure gated parking. Pool was a bonus and outdoor lounge area to watch the boats and catch some rays was fabulous!
Review 125:waited 15min for service at hotel bar then walked out.only 7 other people at the bar at that time.I DON"T BEG.
Review 126:PAYING TO PARK AT THE HOTEL I"AM STAYING AT?????.
Review 127:We did not have a room when we got there even though I had booked a particular room over a month earlier and everything was set. We were given a conference room with a foldout couch. It was like a hammock. My husband slept on the floor the first night. The other 3 nights we got a rollaway bed. We had a balcony that overlooked the harbour but it smelled like very old urine. It was difficult to stand or sit out there because of the smell. I will never stay there again.
Review 128:Some of the staff was very nice. Kayla was not. We were driving from Virginia and called at 4:00 pm the day we were to check in to tell the hotel that we would be a little late and not to give our room away. She said "Oh we wouldn't do that". And that is exactly what the staff there did!! Kayla made no apology for it and acted as though I should just accept it. She said it was because I booked with Booking.com. We did get complimentary breakfast because we had such subpar accommodations but it did not make up for the uncomfortable "beds".
Review 129:The hotel is in a prime location but is dated. For the price, there should be an upscale bed and nice linens. Breakfast took 45 minutes to arrive. It's like an old Motel 6 at 5 times the price. Needs refurbishment
Review 130:Location, location, location
Review 131:Our room was located on the first floor; therefore, our 'private' access to the lawn and to the view of the harbor was not at all private, as there was a function ongoing on the hotel lawn, on the one evening we stayed at the hotel.
Review 132:Staff, room comfort.
Review 133:Bottled water in room $4 each. Ridiculous for the price of the room. More than 1 serving of coffee should be provided in the room
Review 134:Location and staff were friendly.
Review 135:Price went down $200 within hours after I booked.
Review 136:It was a great all in one location right off the main street everything within walking distance Property included restaurant and bar. Marina View was great as advertised. Staff was friendly and helpful.
