Reviews for Mainstay Hotel and Conference Center
Review 1:The price was great. The restaurant was great. The bed was too soft and had a channel from too many people sleeping on it. Upgrade the beds and you have an amazing place there.
Review 2:Found leaving the parking lot difficult on foot and while driving. You could easily drive into wrong way traffic on Adm K Blvd if you weren't paying attention . Should be a walk going towards N G Slots .
Review 3:Liked the proximity to our destination ( Newport Grand Slots ). Had breakfast at North End steakhouse , it was good .
Review 4:Hallways are long and confusing.
Review 5:It was just a couple minute drive from the downtown areas and the mansions and very easy to find off the hyway. There was a big strip mall area in the other direction. its a little remote but we looked at the map ahead of time and expected that so it was not a problem bc we saved a lot by staying there. It's also across the street from a casino and the hotel restaurant and bar area was quite busy with the typical casino crowd so it's prob good and a lot of ppl prob stay there for the casino. we did not try the bar/restaurant bc we spent the day in town. Our room was very big and could of accommodated two king beds but it was 2 full size beds which is odd these days, you at least get two queen. Lots of unused space.
Review 6:Breakfast on New Years Day was like nothing I've seen before should have been expecting large crowd due to hotel being fully booked pulling staff off front desk to wait and clean tables still a horror show . Doors to rooms slam closed with no carpet in halls now sounds like a prison
Review 7:Location to Casino have stayed here several times before
Review 8:Pretty noisy with renovations. Got woken up at 645 in the morning with workers above us. Not all rooms have fridges.
Review 9:Good value. Good facilty. Nice restaurant and location.
Review 10:The locals at bar could get a little loud and vulgar.... And I had requested a late stay... 3 people knocked on door disturbing us sleeping... After reservation for extra time was confirmed....
Review 11:The staff and restaurant was awesome.. Craig the bartender was such a wonderful man and pleasure to talk to
Review 12:Although the Main Lobby was immaculate and the Restaurant were great .....The rooms and hallways need a little paint and freshinging up .....Had a little mildew smell....
Review 13:The pillows and comforting of bed .....rooms were cozy an main lobby and restaurant were awesome...
Review 14:When we checked in at noon on Saturday, we were never greeted (unless you count..."Name of reservation?" as a greeting) and we were told to "follow the signs" to our room. The signs were either non-existent or unclear and we were unable to locate our room (which was up the elevator, down the stairs, around two hallways and up and down ramps). I would have expected the staff to be more helpful and less brusque.
Review 15:The staff at the front desk in the evening and during check out the next morning (same women) were very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to direct us to excellent places to eat. BRAVA!
Review 16:Very pleasant staff - I enjoyed the restaurant on-site. Very cozy and had a great local vibe to it. Prices were terrific, as well, which came as a surprise for a hotel eatery. Decent little fitness facility, and the room definitely got the job done. (Very comfy bed, too!) I'd definitely stay again.
Review 17:I was in in a Room just above the main lobby. I could hear the music from the main system through the walls the entire time I was in my room (day and night). Musac needs to be turned OFF at night!
Review 18:Room was clean, comfortable, location was great.
Review 19:Location was handy to all things to visit in Newport, and lovely view of Pell Bridge. No problems with our room, a little worn but clean and comfortable.
Review 20:The huge problem was the fact that the entire two nights were disrupted by a loud jack hammer noise coming from the bathroom area and resounding into the bedroom and down the hall. When I reported it they said it was from the wind in the plumbing(blustery day)and couldn't be fixed. Consequently no sleep. Really bad and didn't seem too try to make one feel better by some compensation or other...
Review 21:The room was clean and relatively roomy
Review 22:A little tricky to find the exact roadway entering and leaving the property on the south. There is one strip that ends up only in gravel.
Review 23:1. Large semi-suite room for less than $100 a night. 2. Very good restaurant; had wonderful baked cod main course there. 3. Convenient location for getting in and out of town.
Review 24:The bed in our room was very uncomfortable. It was very soft and gave me a sore back.
Review 25:The restaurant connected to the hotel was convenient and food was good.
Review 26:Expensive for a basic room. The room had a strong musty smell that had us sniffling & sneezing. Parking seemed ample, but was limited due to so many cars in the lot.
Review 27:Very friendly staff + convenient location.
Review 28:- Hallway smelled of smoke even in non smoking area
Review 29:- Less than a 5 minute drive from the center of Newport - Spacious room with comfortable bed - Clean - Free parking
Review 30:Our wing had 3 steps between the elevator and our room so the luggage cart did not roll all the way.
Review 31:Spacious room, nice table w. 2 chairs made computing easy. Separate switches for fan and light in bathroom.
Review 32:Room was too dark. Wall light switches did not work with lamps. Brighter room walls would needed. Door dead bolt was broken.
Review 33:Location to area was convenient. Plenty parking.
Review 34:We had some trouble finding our room and had to leave the main building and walk around the building to get there. Had to use room key to unlock the outside door, which we figured out, but weren't initially aware of.
Review 35:Great location, clean room, yummy breakfast at restaurant.
Review 36:Our room was very noisy located next to an entryway and on the ground floor, would try for a better room location next time !
Review 37:Good location relative to cost of downtown Newport/Waterfront hotels.
Review 38:I would not say a bad experience, but wished there was a safety bar and shelves in the tub/shower. The tub in our room didn't even have a skid resistant product.
Review 39:This site was clean and quiet. The location was perfect for visiting various towns. There is an onsite restaurant/bar serving breakfast and dinner. Food and prices were good. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly and professional.
Review 40:Hotel room was old, smelly and could've been cleaner. This hotel is a joke, and I cannot believe such a poor hotel would be anywhere near Newport.
Review 41:Close to downtown Newport. Right off the exit.
Review 42:N/A all was pretty good for the value.
Review 43:The location was nice, the room was a good size, bed very comfortable, free internet and the restaurant on site was very good.
Review 44:1.Parking lot has one drive only, every car has to drive to the end of the lot before you can turn around to leave. 2. Smokers constantly outside the entrance. 3. Bath fans were extremely noisy. 4. Peeling wallpaper. 5. No complimentary breakfast.
Review 45:1.Location. 2.Housekeeping staff was excellent.
Review 46:The location, view, especially at night. Having a restaurant without going out where the food was very good. Convenience to the Naval base and downtown Newport was also a plus.
Review 47:Staff wasn't to friendly. I called ahead to ask about a shuttle and was never told it was $8 per person plus tax. Uber was less then $5 for 4 people and brought you door to door. (Brick Alley Pub) For the price you'd think you would get a cup of coffee.
Review 48:Need car although there was a drop into town service for $8 per person each trip some restaurant staff not interested in guests
Review 49:Comfortable room and comfortable bed
Review 50:nil
Review 51:the Hotel provided a number of things as part of the cost- coofee & cookies, chocolates, water, cheese etc. This is the first time we have seen this level of complimentary items- well done. The reception staff were very prompt at resolving a small noise issue- thanks again
Review 52:We arrived late and parking was tough to find. It is a bit outside the city. The wifi did not work well in the morning.
Review 53:It was a big hotel, so it had all of the amenities associated with that. The food at the restaurant attached to the hotel was really good. The room was clean, quiet, and comfortable. It was also pretty big.
Review 54:Lack of ice machine. Air conditioning was non-existent Made us change rooms because of noisy guests above. Lack of laundry facilities
Review 55:Location and staff
Review 56:Our room was rundown. Faucet in bathroom hard to turn on. Had to call several times until we got somebody to answer phone to come pick us up.
Review 57:The location to the waterfront and shuttle from the airport.
Review 58:Noisy fridge, alarm clock that went off in the night and would not turn off, dodgy light switch bathroom, grubby hall carpets
Review 59:Easy to reach from main road
Review 60:The hotel is tired. Hallway carpets are so dirty, the wallpaper near the windows was peeling and moldy. No screens in the window. While this wasn't super expensive, it wasn't cheap either. This hotel is badly in need of life cycle repairs!
Review 61:The breakfast/restaurant was terrific. The shower was powerful and the toiletries were good. The location is super convenient, close to everything. The front desk staff was friendly. The complimentary Sunday paper was very nice.
Review 62:Hotel is nearby casino, so make sure you have taken parking slot in advance, especially during the night time.
Review 63:Nice and home-like hotel, wide and clean room.
Review 64:I booked the wrong type of room and the images online make the place look a lot better than it is. It was so expensive for what we received. I wish I could get 100 bucks back. I also thought that the shuttle or bast would be included but it was not. Talk about no extra benefits. It was advertised as a business center but the building was old and nasty. The conference room looked like an old schoolroom or prison common area. The carpeting throughout was nasty and needs to be redone.
Review 65:The location was ok. It was close to every American outside shopping center.
Review 66:The staff had terrible attitudes and were too "busy" to help me. I was with a wedding block and they didn't acknowledge the group rate. The people blamed all my complaints on me rather than owning up to a poor quality control issue. They had the audacity to yell at me in front of other guests.
Review 67:Nothing- thin walls, broken tv, no bathroom light
Review 68:Too far from Newport. Shuttle charge was a rip.($8 plus tax per person) Take Uber instead! ($4.81 total for 4 people to Bowens Wharf) Some of the staff was unfriendly. Tried to charge me for a long distance call made from my room. Who uses a hotel phone anymore when we all have cell phones? Restaurant was uninviting. For $250 a night one would think you could get a cup of coffee instead of having to pay for it. (Never use the coffee pot in the room)
Review 69:Bed was comfortable.
Review 70:Terrible odor like mildew. Staff having an argument while guests were in the lobby. Wierd layout and had only 1 elevator so long walk with luggage to your room.
Review 71:Restaurant had no quick breakfast option such as donuts to go, etc. and no such places immediately nearby. Only coffee or tea available for a quick take out.
Review 72:Had a restaurant on site with nice dinner menu and good food.
Review 73:The room was very, very dated and worn. The beds were doubles rather than queens. EVERY time we used the television we had to unplug and re-plug the cable. The TV remote did not work but was replaced at the second day.
Review 74:They gave you plenty of towels There was a small refrigerator in the room.
Review 75:Their TV only worked once in awhile. Room poorly put together. Door was not hung right and was very hard to open. No safety in the tub and the floor was very slippery.
Review 76:Rooms and furnishings are little dated and worn looking. The layout is OK but needs to be refurbished.
Review 77:Location is great! On site restaurant is excellent.
Review 78:Bed not very comfortable, matress was sagged. Hotel was pretty noisy, you could har everything from the neighbours and also a noisy airco outside. Breakfast good but not included. Shuttle service available but costs $8pp and odd that it on Sunday didn't drive before 3pm (a bit later okay but 3pm? that's a bit late for sightseeing so we drove by car and were lucky to park for $10/day ).
Review 79:Clean and spacious room with separate sitting area and two tv's in sleeping and sitting area. Free wifi. Spacious bathroom with showen with good water pressure.
Review 80:My husband is a facilities manager at a marina and is aware of hotel cleanliness standards. We found bedbugs in our first room (at no fault of the hotel, we understand it happens!). We transferred to a second room on a seperate floor only to find the lsame issue. It was late (10pm) and we had two young kids with us. We asked to be transferred to a seperate hotel and the friendly accommodating staff made reservations for us. Unfortunately, the Ramada which we were sent to was not comparable. It was sketchy, dirty and run down. We felt disappointed with this since we dont get away often. This was the chance for the staff to "wow" us with customer service. Unfortunately, all though nice, they failed.
Review 81:A nice hotel with casual comfortable atmosphere. Nice amenities and close to town by car.
Review 82:Room not that clean. Curtains had holes in them. Couldn't get television to work. Ask for extra towels when we checked in. Was told by desk clerk she would tell housekeeping. We never recieved the towels. Desk clerk not friendly as all.
Review 83:Comfortable bed
Review 84:honestly everything that you can think of. if you can think it, it probably happened in the short time we were there.
Review 85:Terrible experience. Tvs don't work, ac units do not work. staff moves you around without concern for your condition or situation or plans on the island. Menu is not accurate. Food takes an hour to come out at 9pm on a Sunday, even when ordering sandwiches. General Manager has no clue about her property. All she does is pass the buck. Uses third party booking as a means to discard liability. Complete joke
Review 86:Hallways were hot and stuffy... no air conditioning or ventilation. Pool stuck in the parking lot was not convenient, nor was it clean.
Review 87:Convenient location, on-site restaurant, good-sized room.
Review 88:My daughter had a room next to us. She has an allergy and we had to change rooms with her because she smelled mold in the room (carpeting?) We had wood floors. We also smelled a musty odor; however, we were only there for one night.
Review 89:The restaurant food was excellent. The bedding was clean and comfortable.
Review 90:We have stayed here many times and found the Mainstay one of the best values in Newport no matter what time of the year you visit.. The facility has everything you look for, good service, friendly staff, and an onsite restaurant.
Review 91:After reading some of the reviews, we were concerned. Left luggage in car until the 3 of us checked our room. Found it to be ok. TV had to be unplugged & plugged back in in order to work. The 2nd room we booked for my daughter smelled of smoke (told front desk & they never came to deodorize) the faucet in shower took some doing to turn the water off. One night it ran all night. Both rooms had black mold where tub and walls met.
Review 92:Room was clean. Amenities and towels for three were there each day. Restaurant and bar attached to hotel had a friendly staff and good breakfast. (not free)
Review 93:Older facility needs updating but clean
Review 94:food in dining area very good. Staff members pleasant and helpful booked my reservations for College graduation in th e spring
Review 95:This hotel was VERY over priced for the location, amenities, décor and overall everything. I would pay $75 per night for this type of place - Kind of smelled and was not overly nice at all. We paid 3x that - granted it was a holiday weekend but definitely not worth it at all. We will not return.
Review 96:Location was fairly convenient to downtown Newport.
Review 97:Hotel does NOT look like it does on website. Bedrooms are very outdated. Wallpaper does not go all the way to the ground. Beds very uncomfortable. The blow dryer broke. And overall facilities are outdated.
Review 98:The TV connection kept going off and we would have to disconnect the cables and reconnect.
Review 99:Most hotels will at least have coffee in the lobby if not continental breakfast.
Review 100:The only thing my husband said he didn't like was a bigger vending area and coca cola products instead of Pepsi ;)
Review 101:Stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon while we visited Newport and Providence. The location is great and close to many fun activities. The hotel room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. Staff was very welcoming and nice. Very affordable.
Review 102:The rooms are only marginally clean. The TV did not work and we had to keep plugging the cable in and out to get it to turn on. The refrigerator made an awful sound and we had to unplug that. The room had an unpleasant musty odor. I thought the breakfast was included, but we had to pay for that.
Review 103:Price was cheap enough.
Review 104:I asked the chambermaid to leave us with extra towels as we wanted to take evening and morning showers for the wedding we were attending. I asked her twice, in person. She said she would as she entered our room to clean it but she did not leave extra anything. I called for extra towels but this bothered me. Also, when we arrived the TVs didn't work. Aggie immediately fixed the problem with new switches. However the next morning the TVs didn't work again. Very annoying.
Review 105:Front staff and room
Review 106:No ice machine on our floor. Without television for the first night, called and went to the desk over 4 times. We were told someone would be right up it took 24 hours and U.S. Telling the front desk the next day. Never offered anything for the inconvenience.
Review 107:Restaurant was very nice, had the Wednesday night rib special very good, moist and tender. Waitress was very nice gave us food suggestions in regards to things to do during our stay.
Review 108:Booking in was a hassle - With us travelling from Africa the booking was made by our cousin staying in Boston, it became a big issue that he was not there physically to book us in - The TV in the room switches off every 15 minutes and that was a big irritation.
Review 109:The size of the room and comfort
Review 110:A few clinches. Neither safe worked. But they did fix 1 when asked. Cable went out again came and fixed it. Went out site seeing in the heat, came back to go in the pool and the pool was closed for the day.:-(
Review 111:It was convenient aces to everything.
Review 112:I stayed for several days. Refrigerators should be in all rooms. The front entry doors should be Electronic for easy access with luggage. Also, Guest Services could polish their appearance with professional attire. Noticed painters were touching up areas that were needed. Simple remedies that give a property eye appeal.
Review 113:The convenience to the center of Newport, access to Jamestown, etc. The room size was quite comfortable. The location to the Casino is walking distance. This hotel has the potential to be excellent with a few improvements and professionalism
Review 114:We have stayed at the Mainstay a few times when it was operated by Best Western and we're always pleased. This time the room was located off to the side of the main lobby (I requested an upper floor room when making the reservation). The card keys had to be replaced twice, the room air conditioner made all of our clothing and the bedding damp, we were out of our room for 3 hours and it was not taken care of by housekeeping. We took care of the beds and requested clean towels from the front desk. We were told they would be delivered in 15 minutes. After a 2nd phone call an hour later, a surly man delivered 4 bath towels. We checked out a day earlier than planned because we were so uncomfortable. I could go on and on but needless to say, we will not stay at this hotel again.
Review 115:One had to step into the tub for shower. The tub was very high. The motel needed remodeling. It has fixtures from the 80's. There were steps on the second floor. It would have been impossible for a wheel chair. Much too expensive for value.
Review 116:Location was good
Review 117:Air conditioning in our room was insufficient. Sleeping was uncomfortable. Hallways were an oven. Staff was unhelpful. The place needed a facelift about 30 years ago.
Review 118:Old and run-down building with little to no recent updates in structure or decor. No elevator to third floor in further wing of building. Windows have probably not been washed since the place was built. I pulled back the curtain to see the view and couldn't see through the heavy dirt and white grime.
Review 119:Last minute option away from touristy center with less traffic and near major road
Review 120:The key card to the room was very bad, not responsive and at one point we had to exchange the key card for new ones..but had the same issue..you had you insert and remove your card super super slow for it to read it ..very annoying, especially when you've been standing in the hall for 10 mins repeatedly doing it.... Our room smelled very musty..almost like there was a wetness/dampness to it..didn't go away until ac was put on high/cold and for a long time- but we eventually had to turn down the ac because of the temperature and the smell came back- our friend's room did not have the smell issue though.
Review 121:Nice staff, great location. Room was cleaned daily- no major issue
Review 122:Hotel is obviously a little dated. The first room we were in had an air conditioner that was blowing warm air, but called the front desk and they quickly moved us to a new room, so no major issue. LOUDEST housekeeping staff in the morning ever haha you could hear their entire conversation from 8am until you leave.
Review 123:Hotel was clean & staff were friendly & eager to help. They fixed our room issue immediately & with no hesitation. Also the fact that they have a shuttle to take you into town is awesome. I will be returning.
Review 124:First night at Hotel, the pull out sofa had dirty bed linen fromprevious guest. I spoke to the front desk and the gentleman said therewas no Manager on duty and no housekeeper in the building and I wouldhave to come down to the desk and pick up the clean linens and replacemyself. He put me on hold and a lady picked up and apologized, sent alady up to my room from the laundry room and gave us clean/newsheets and made the bed. The lady also gave us free Breakfast vouchersfor my two daughters and I. Being in the Service industry for the past25 years, this man at the front desk was not properly trained and shouldnever be allowed to talk to a customer the way he did, I paid over $800to stay at your Hotel. That is not how you want/should be treated..
Review 125:Just too far away from new port, not walking distance at all. Requires means of transportation to town and shuttle is extremely over priced. 10$/person one way vs a 5$ uber. No thanks. Also found out it's located close to the projects... Overall it got the job done and we had a great weekend regardless, but pay the extra penny and stay in town.
Review 126:They had to try putting me in 3 different rooms to find one that didn't have a horrid musty smell, the last one still had it but window could be opened while a/c ran- on first floor, so now I had no room security. They have a dampness issue, I felt dirty , just wanted to leave
Review 127:Did not like the fact that the elevator did not go to my section of the 3rd floor. I am a senior citizen. I should have been made aware of this.Very difficult w luggage.
Review 128:The hallways needed to be updated and they had a slight odor. The rooms were good for the price, however, they need to take the cheap chests out and put in some sort of closets. It takes too much space in the rooms.
Review 129:People at the front desk were very friendly. I was most impressed with their response to my call regarding no hot water in our units. I figured that we were just going to have to deal with it, but when we got back to our room later that night we had hot water and it was there for all four showers at a time......very impressed.
Review 130:The room was not vacuumed, all kind of debris on the floor, we had to bring the technician two times to fix the TV, the hotel is really out dated. Whatever work of renovation was done, is really poorely executed, see the bathtup enclosure. Thye must have used unqualified workers
Review 131:The staff, the size of the rooms, the location, the beds, the clean linnen, the fact that one can open the window
Review 132:1. Upon Arriving Elevator Down 2. AC was marginal at best 3. Cleanliness of room was lacking 4. Staff unpleasant when requesting additional services. 5. Attached Restaurant, Old, Dirty, and food was gross.
Review 133:Comfort of the bed
Review 134:It is dirty; also, we had to cancel the 3rd night; we were surprised to see that the first night was at 309$ and other nights at 119$; therefore, we had to pay for the 309$ night; I feel that we got robbed; the staff told me that they had nothing to do with it; that it was the fault of Booking.com;
