Reviews for Hotel Viking
Review 1:Unfortunately I didn't get to experience the hotel at its best because of renovations but it was in January and the slow season so that is why they were renovating. Can't wait to see it done!
Review 2:It was really great location and cool historic hotel! The price was great too!
Review 3:Small bathroom, parking not included, resort fee to access to the wifi and the swimming pool, etc. (should be included). Breakfast not included. Low overall quality/price ratio regarding that most services are not included in the final price. The indicated price is not a good indicator of the final price.
Review 4:Confortable and clean bedroom, good location, nice staff, plenty of TV channels and large TV.
Review 5:The size of the room especially the bathroom and the restaurant as well as the maze to get to your room .
Review 6:I was not aware that the Viking was undergoing renovations . We had to go through a maze to find our room. The room is very small . The bathroom was terribly small. We ordered a prime drub at the restaurant on site and were told that there was no steak on the menu due to the renovations. After I commented that it says on the site for the restaurant that is their specialty a forums rib appeRed that must have been defrosted as it had no flavor. The staff was lovely but the restaurant/lounge should close until repairs are done . It takes forever to get your food and drinks . We were surprisedby our experience based on our friends experiences when they stayed there .
Review 7:The walls were paper thin. We could hear extremely loud sex from the couple next door and every word of their conversations. If you expect any privacy, don't stay here. Also, upon checking out, they tried to charge us for valet parking when we didn't have a car.
Review 8:The room was well-appointed and comfortable. The staff was friendly and the location was great. TIP: Don't valet the car. They charge you $15/day (plus any cash tips) and you will wait forever for the car when checking out especially if it's a popular check-out day, like on a Sunday. There is plenty of free street parking on the neighborhood streets within a block of the hotel.
Review 9:Things that I was not too fond of were that the all the lamp lights weren't turned on in the room when entering. The honor bar was up charged. Thin walls, I could hear a couple arguing in the room next to mine. I also found a Tylenol Am under the bed, and a pistachio shell on the lamp next to the bed. The bathroom sink left a mess when I turned both faucet handles on, and the bath water took a while to heat up. Quite a few hidden charges. There was also hair in the hot tub, and a couple kissing in the pool which would have been ok if they weren't grabbing the another hotel guest around them :/
Review 10:The things that I liked about the hotel was that here was an alarm clock next to the bed, the view of the Newport bridge, polite house keeping, wonderful room. When I mention the fact that it was my birthday, the hotel staff arranged for complimentary fudge to be sent to my room. There was also a large tv, decorative art on the walls, and nice bedding. It was very convenient with a restaurant, downstairs as well
Review 11:For some reason they didn't have creamer of any kind with the in-room coffee machine. I had to go in search of half & half every morning!
Review 12:Staff was wonderful. Very service oriented
Review 13:If I can only report a small critic , it would be the size of the room . But It's very well decorated and well furnished .
Review 14:All the staff have been very friendly and professional . The location is great .
Review 15:Noise from other rooms next to ours. Woke up in the middle of the night to a crying baby in the next room and early the next morning as well! Unattractive view of the parking lot as well.
Review 16:LOVED the afternoon tea! Staff was very, very friendly. The room was comfortable, the bed was like sleeping on a cloud!
Review 17:The bar staff was terrible. Both times when we went Down for cocktails to the hotel bar the bartender was walking around confused and it took forever for her to help us. The couple next to us ordered a pizza but when it came out the bartender ended up passing it on to the couple after 20 minutes. They said they don't want it anymore which is what I would have done. She said it just came out from the kitchen which is a lie because we watched it get cold on the side before passing it on to them. Secondly, we sat down after few people at the bar finished eating and drinking. Instead of cleaning up first the bartender ended up giving us drinks and left all dirty dishes and napkins next to us and didn't clean it til about 15 min later. She had no time management at all. She didn't know what to do first. Or how to multitask which is a critical skill for her line of work. We wanted more drinks but went elsewhere despite of the cold weather. The bar would get more clients if they had a more competent bartender. Other people around us were getting impatient as well and enjoyed to the point that they left as well. This problem should get fixed before they lose all clientele.
Review 18:Rooms were super clean And friendly staff. The ambiance of Christmas decorations were extra cozy.
Review 19:The wait time for lunch on Sat before we left was a bit long - 40 minutes for an easy lunch.
Review 20:The rooms were wonderful, spacious, clean, comfortable, beds comfy - liked the layout. Bartenders were terrific - loved the bar on New Year's Eve. Spa was wonderful. Valet parkers could not have been nicer.
Review 21:I felt it was a bait and switch on the room I was given very small room. I thought I booked the estate room with a fireplace. I did not get what I expected
Review 22:Charge a daily fee for parking in the lots behind and beside hotel which is completely unnecessary. This amenity should be included as part of the cost of the stay. The heater in the room was extremely dirty with a bunch of dust and debris in it, easy enough to vacuum out by staff.
Review 23:Location great, friendly helpful staff, and good accommodations for the value.
Review 24:The valet parking situation is a nightmare- will never ever do it again. Also, the fire alarm went off during our stay, and hotel staff did not follow proper evacuation procedures- letting drunk guests from an on-site wedding block exits. Found out from a friend afterwards this was the second time in 2 months the fire alarm went off.
Review 25:The location is great- in a more quiet part of town with plenty of food, drink, and shopping options within walking distance. The facilities are lovely, with a bar open late and patio with fire pit open even in winter.
Review 26:Room very small , tiny bathroom with a tiny bar sink / radiator noisey / cleaning people did not come Spa charge & parking charge daily fees add $30. A day ~ not worth it !
Review 27:Nice location & pleasant spa
Review 28:The food was not that great.
Review 29:The Hotel is beautiful. Walking distance to almost everything. Excellent staff. The rooms were comfortable and upscale.
Review 30:What I didn't like it that the picture of my room didn't match the description of the room, I was expecting a fireplace and a bigger sitting area and that was not the case.
Review 31:I liked the location of the hotel and the history, restaurant was good. Pool area was good. The room could use a little work, but I'm sure being an older place that it has restrictions on what can be done with it. Other than that I think I got a good value for my money.
Review 32:They did not accept my gift card certificate which I paid $ 550.00 at a live auction at Hope Alzheimers facility in Cranston . The gal behind the desk said it expired in September , 2015 .It is my understanding in RI , gift certificates have no expiration date. The other businesses who provided gift certificates ( Newport Vineyards, White horse tavern, Mansion tours, Etc all honored their commitment . Not The Viking ! Also, the facility is nice, but not clean !!!
Review 33:Booking.com price was misleading as it did not include $28 resort and $15 valet fees. We called the hotel and were told there was no on street parking when in fact it was plentiful.
Review 34:Lovely historic hotel in a great location with welcoming staff.
Review 35:There was no hot water our first day, so no shower that morning. After we complained we got a 50%reduction on our first nights stay.
Review 36:The staff are all excellent, very friendly and helpful. Great location.
Review 37:The central location allowed for easy walking around the city, as well as to shopping and dining establishments. The staff was attentive and the service excellent
Review 38:I just wish the spa had a nicer waiting room with lounge chairs and fireplace. It would be fitting for the prices and spa itself.
Review 39:The people working here are wonderful . It was my sisters 60th and they acknowledged it with chocolates and good wishes. The rooms were so comfortable and clean . The spa people were amazing.
Review 40:The entire hotel is just amazing, live hotel bar music in the evening was a nice touch. Such lovely staff. They also provide a car service to drop and pick you up in the city, which is really convenient especially for the cliff walk.
Review 41:There was trash spread out in the hallway - This is my third stay, something like that is VERY unusual, but still, it was there.
Review 42:beautiful location, well appointed rooms, comfortable bed.
Review 43:The room was very small, and for the price, it did not live up to expectations. I have stayed in many hotels in Newport and every single one was nicer, had skit more space and accommodations. I feel that the only way they can justify their erounous rates is by their proxsemipty to the center of Newport. I would never stay here again, nor would I recommend it.
Review 44:Nothing was good about this overly price hotel.
Review 45:I didn't like the parking fee of $30.00 per day which is not listed on booking.com specifically describing the amount.
Review 46:My wife loved the decor and the cleanliness. I liked the breakfast room and the breakfast. I liked the location. Parking fee a bit high.
Review 47:I can't even begin. They never cleaned the room. Just fixed sheets. Everything else left on floor. I don't think the room was even vacuumed.
Review 48:Staff was very pleasant. That was the only good thing about this place.
Review 49:Went to Newport for 2nd anniversary and requested to have the champagne and strawberries in the room upon arrival. The request was confirmed by the hotel but the package was not there upon arrival. Kind of a bummer as i wanted it to be a surprise.
Review 50:Great location and decor.
Review 51:Had to switch rooms as the entry level rooms are extremely small.
Review 52:Great location. Short walk to everywhere. Great views from rooftop Bar. Front desk and entire staff were great.
Review 53:The bathroom arrangement. The toilets were too low. Our room was really far away from the main entrance and my mother in law has a hard time walking. Next time I will request a room closer to the front entrance. The hallway smelled musty.
Review 54:The beds were great. Newport is charming!
Review 55:Wait time for valets and gridlock. Several cars cluttered up the limited space whose owners were not there to drive off. Allow those coming and going during their stay to get their cars from the lot. Not everyone needs to have valet for each and every entrance and departure. Mind you, guys were great and we're working very hard, but maintained friendly, positive manner with guests, even those irritated by the delays.
Review 56:Good location in walking distance to harbor area and historic area. Pretty easy to get in and out of town. Sophia? At front desk gave us wonderful suggestion for dinner with some piano music. She knew just who to call and set it up for us.
Review 57:Pool was dirty, funky smell Room was a lot smaller than what is shown in picture. View of valet parking lot.
Review 58:Staff was very friendly. Location close to downtown.
Review 59:Mattress vibrated anytime someone moved. Overall spending over $300 one would expect more bathroom amenities. Basically a solid room but not up to $300 rooms elsewhere. Compare say Mandarin Oriental in Vegas which was less money and provided so much more ambiance. With part time lodging at a premium in Newport there aren't many choices and price reflects that.
Review 60:Location. Decor nice. Staff was best aspect. They were wonderful and helpful. Drinks in lobby also appreciated. Back to staff, did I say they were great?
Review 61:Room wasn't ready until 4:30 PM and the maid had spilled a drink on the carpet, but had not cleaned it. The housekeeping supervisor came quickly and seemed to have a plan to get the carpet steamed and vacuumed as we went out, but it did not happen. Otherwise, the rooms are very comfortable and well done. Nice renovation.
Review 62:Excellent location and great, attentive staff
Review 63:The room was small; extremely pricey. At the very least a continental breakfast would have been nice.
Review 64:It's location was great to the center of Newport where we wanted to be.
Review 65:No "wow" factor. Nothing extra for the price of a room 400 plus? No breakfast, no parking included, nothing special in room for guests and the staff were well kets put it this way... i held the door for them?
Review 66:Location and ambiance of room
Review 67:Only downside was the particular room that we were in was very small and the bathroom was tiny. I'm not sure if other rooms on the property are larger and more spacious.
Review 68:Fabulous location. Walking distance to many restaurants, shops, mansions and walking path. Beautiful lobby and superb staff.
Review 69:People at the desk made me feel like a third-class citizen - stating I booked through a third partydiffi
Review 70:They did not charge me $30.00/day for parking, but it took many phone calls
Review 71:Minor complaint: receptionists didn't tell us explicitly that a car service is included when we asked a few times about bus services.
Review 72:Great hotel, clean, renovated, nice staff. If we visit Newport again, we will definitely stay here again.
Review 73:The hotel is antiquated. When I arrived they pulled a bait and switch. So I got a room I didnt book. They said they could do nothing about it and it was booking.com's fault. Well that doesn't fly... Ultimately after check into a room was forces to take. ( they were fully booked) they called me and told me they had another room?? Go figure. The coffee in the morning was 2 dollars. The water was 6. The price of the room was 700.00 per night and the parking was either find your own or pay an extra 30... Really.. No recommended at all.
Review 74:Nothing
Review 75:Housekeeping, and having to look at the parking lot when they told us at the desk when I asked they said the town!
Review 76:Your restaurant and location was great. The lobster roll was the best!
Review 77:I booked a room at the Hotel Viking based on other positive reviews, and wasn't disappointed. This is a beautiful hotel (the first hotel in Newport, I believe) and the staff are fantastic. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Review 78:Price of valet parking $30 a night. No self park. My husband was ignored at breakfast. No one came by to greet him.
Review 79:Doormen were attentive every time we went in or out. Same with staff at front desk. Location was perfect. Restaurant was great at dinner time.
Review 80:Not impressed with service at the restaurant. Dinner menu was good with many choices. Breakfast was expensive and not good at all, eggs were very runny and undercooked whether we order them sunny side up, over easy or poached.
Review 81:Hotel staff were great; very helpful!
Review 82:The room was spacious and comfortable with a great sitting area. The afternoon tea was wonderful with fresh scones, fruits, sandwiches, cake slices. Everyone was welcoming.
Review 83:The Trolleys were awful, not running on a schedule, unhelpful drivers but this is newports problem not the hotel we stayed in, which was delightful.
Review 84:Lovely hotel, great staff. This hotel is a compliment to Newport.
Review 85:Having to leave.
Review 86:It was beautiful. I love Newport. I thought it was so sweet to come back after walking around and having cupcakes delivered to our room. It was a nice, romantic weekend away for just us two.
Review 87:Late check in took no account of our wishes on booking and housekeeping coming into the room when privacy was on the door. Parking charges were very high.
Review 88:The customer service that turned around a bad experience into a good one. We had an upgrade and some complimentary items to offset and we were happy with this.
Review 89:No Bad experiences.
Review 90:Facilities were wonderful. Our room was elegant for the price paid. Location 5 star. I stayed at this hotel 30 years ago. It was awful. New ownership and a complete facelift, I did not recognize it.
Review 91:Windows in the room where very old and room was on the street side so it was pretty noisy. And the bed was definitely too soft.
Review 92:Nicely decorated, conveniently located in a walking distance to downtown and the habor.
Review 93:The noise from the people walking in the room above ours was quite loud. Unfortunately, it was late at night and very early in the morning.
Review 94:Very convenient location. Very walkable to most attractions.
Review 95:Room to room acoustics are poor. Sinks in the rooms are pathetic. No hotel should have a 2-night minimum. That seemed to go away when I went thru this website to book it.
Review 96:Excellent coffee. Not having to deal with parking. Valet all the time. Location is excellent
Review 97:Bed was not the greatest -- a little too soft.
Review 98:Very nice and accommodating reception including the valet parking. Easy to walk into town and see the ice sculptures. Newport is always beautiful -- but under the snow, it was like being transported to another time.
Review 99:We felt if a Hotel offers ammenities that you are not interested, you should not be charged for them, in our case the pool, gym, and coffee maker in the room. I don't recall the charges for the ammenities mentioned when I booked online at a set price. So instead of the room price $129, the ammenity charges were automatically added on at the end, and there wasn't any negotiation, which I feel was false advertising.
Review 100:We loved the overall condition of the old hotel . The staff was always cheerful and accomodating with smiling faces even on Christmas Eve. We especially loved the festive Christmas Decorations , that added so much to our Holiday visit.
Review 101:Limited food choice for dinner and not knowing that lounge food could be order in the main dining area.
Review 102:Location Dining on location Nice size of room and bath
Review 103:Bathroom in my room was odd! The heat was extremely loud and the walls to neighboring rooms were ridiculously thin. Bed and pillows were at best average. Way too many fees, paid well over $200.00 more than booking fees that I agreed to from the website. Overall, hotel was a pleasant experience and would go back again.
Review 104:The location is prime, the atmosphere is lovely, and well decorated for a Victorian period hotel. Not overly stuffy! The staff was phenomenal and extremely friendly and courteous.
Review 105:Very poor sink faucet water flow. They did discount for this inconvenience. Sink was stuffed into the closet or vice versa. They use body wash, shampoo and conditioner dispensers instead of individual containers. I think this is incredibly unsanitary. From our room you could hear the second floor occupants thumping around and the floors squeaking. Even though this was not the optimal experience we might try once again and give this venerable landmark hotel a second chance
Review 106:Central, convenient location National grid EV charge station access although it was the most remote I have experienced. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 107:The food .Christmas dinner was terrible and extremely over priced. We tried other meals as well that were not very good either. We were there last year also, same problem with food. also, both years the pool was over run by unsupervised children. We told the front desk and nothing was done. I feel for the price I paid it was unsatisfactory. I reviewed this last year too. No one responded. We thought we would give it another try But not again.
Review 108:The Historic feel of the Hotel. The friendly and prompt staff. The location of the hotel.
Review 109:Somebody left food container in hallway and a roll of wet paper towels. In our room: Sink had very little water pressure, and the faucet is not big enough (too close to sink basin) to get one's hands under to wash them- need to get a taller faucet. The bathroom light is way too bright and can only be switched on from the room and with the mirror on the door, it reflects light directly at sleeping person in bed - maybe add a dimmer to switch.
Review 110:Pool & hot tub Bed was comfortable Valet guy was nice
Review 111:Parking charge was not stated on their web site. All the taxes that were charged are very disappointing and will keep us from staying again. Sorry.
Review 112:The Viking Hotel is lovely. The staff is attentive and very friendly. The hotel location is in walking distance to the shops and restaurants.
Review 113:Noise level was loud we were on the 4th floor. Could here the wedding going on downstairs in the. Lobby level. Also there was a stain on the wall paper in the Bath room
Review 114:The hotel was nice, Staff was excellent ( bell man were especially standouts. Room was clean & comfortable
Review 115:Viking staff are extremely helpful and polite. The room was very comfortable and clean. Being out of season the value for money couldn't be beaten.
Review 116:Rooms has a strong musty odor due probably to inadequate ventilation and heating. Hotel corridors and lobby need better heating systems, they were rather cold considering that it was a very cold night.
Review 117:We had to leave!
Review 118:Staff was incredible- had cupcakes and a card sent to room for my wife's birthday. Dinner at One bellvue was one of the best meals I've eaten, and again the manager came over to distract my wife while his staff came from the other side to sing happy birthday. Couples massage in their spa - again on of the best we have had! Combined with the town of Newport you can't go wrong staying here!!
Review 119:We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant and left in complete irritation. How do you charge 23 dollars for a breakfast buffet? Obviously we were not aware of the price but will def make sure others are aware of not eating at the hotel. You served eggs. That is terrible
Review 120:My husband and I were there for my birthday and the wonderful person behind the front desk knew it was my birthday as my husband had ordered a bottle of champagne she welcomed us with an upgrade to a beautiful suite. Hotel staff was great they sent us up cupcakes too! Will go there again
Review 121:You were charged a $30 parking fee and a $15 resort fee, which many places don't charge. For the money there weren't the extra details I expected.
Review 122:The room was beautiful, as is the building and the facilities.
Review 123:Bathroom tiny & split in 2 rooms; toilet & tub/shower in 1room, sink in other. Not enough storage space. Rooftop bar not open;regular bar ok but nothing special. Parking a rip-off at $30/day.Noise all night long above our room
Review 124:Room looked out over nice atrium. Very pretty decoration. Nice sittingon front porch.
Review 125:The parking is expensive at the hotel ($30/day) but the staff was great at accommodating us!
Review 126:It was the perfect location to stay! Everything was in walking distance if you don't mind walking.
Review 127:I did not like the bathroom separated from the sink area. Not enough bureau draw space to put clothes in. Charging $30 a day to park when you are paying top $$$ for your room.
Review 128:I liked the hotel. Nice room. Clean. The staff was so accommodating and professional. The valet boys were wonderful, always there when needed. Very polite and courteous.
Review 129:The room was small and upgrading to an Estate room was a waste, no fireplace or additional amenities as shown in online pictures. Save your money and stay at the Westin or Marriott.
Review 130:Location, restaurant, and valets were excellent.
Review 131:It looks very good and luxury from the pictures but it's just very expensive and has no charm. The room was very small and there was a bad smell in the lobby.
Review 132:The bed was very comfortable.
Review 133:Property is run down A/c is noisy and out of date, carpets are old and dirty, bathrooms are old and in need of repair. As a bonus the food in the restaurant was horrible!
Review 134:Location is good
Review 135:How they jack up fhe prices when there are special events. We were up there for our son's graduation from naval officer training. It is not just this hotel or event. All hotels everywhere do it because they can! Also paying for parking is annoying. Again, not A fault of this hotel. It happens all the time in areas where parking is at a minimim
Review 136:It was the perfect location. The staff were all so professional, friendly and so polite. They would go out of their way to please you. The rooms were beautifully decorated and comfortable. The food and drinks at the restaurant was so good! I highly recommend the New England Clam Chowder and the chili for lunch and they had the best Bloody Mary's!!! Nothing was bad. I will go back for sure.
Review 137:Tiny bathroom in our "Manor Room". I've seen bigger bathrooms on a ship. The room, overall, was nice.
Review 138:Very nice staff, great location.
Review 139:Could use liquid creamer in rooms instead of powder.
Review 140:Atmosphere, decor etc. Breakfast buffet was delicious.
