Reviews for Carter House Inns

Review 1:Did not like the smaller bed and the service in 301 for breakfast was not up to the standard of the hotel. Lots of street noise (very offensive language) during the night from "locals" which was a disruption.

Review 2:The hotel decor was tasteful and stylish. The staff in particular Samantha in 301 and Mr Hornsby (?) were first class. The dinner in 301 was a highlight.

Review 3:Can't blame the hotel for this but the other guests at the hotel made us feel uncomfortable. As we were a young couple travelling, we felt out of place and underdressed. The hotel and staff aren't to blame for this though, just thought we'd let other travellers without smart clothes know.

Review 4:Great hotel, very friendly and thoughtful staff. We left an item at the hotel by accident and they were very helpful in recovering it. Very close to old town Eureka with all the restaurants and bars.

Review 5:I booked the room thru Booking.com for $156 but was charged $199 upon check-in...what gives?!?!? Not sure if that is the Carter House's fault or Booking.com Frustrated!

Review 6:Room was great but mattress a bit soft. Slept just ok

Review 7:All the staff was great. Loved the happy hour too. $2.50 manhattans and martinis...wow! Dinner in the restaurant was also excellent.

Review 8:The tub needed another scrubbing but wasn't bad.

Review 9:Everything was great! The guy at the front desk led us to our room and showed us all the amenities. The room was cozy and clean. The breakfast was delicious!

Review 10:The hotel was very noisy, especially the water pipes and corridors and the wine cellar compressor woke us up at 11pm and 5-45 am.

Review 11:Pleasant and helpfull staff. Especially Audrey.

Review 12:Surprising wonderful boutique historic property in a great location to Historic Eureka Complimentary Napa Wine - awesome Concierge / hotel checkin staff were very very good Small well stocked bar with excellent service

Review 13:The room was right above the kitchen and restaurant and terribly noisy from chairs being pushed around downstairs. Some floor protectors on the chairs would probably help a lot with the noise. Also the room had lovely gas fireplace, but it was open and kept burning low trough out the night. There was no carbon monoxide alarm to be seen. So we had to keep the windows open.

Review 14:We got upgraded to a suite, which was a nice surprise. The room was very light and roomy, with windows all around. Complimentary wine hour, tea and cookies at night were a great touch. Staff was very friendly.

Review 15:Never before have we felt so well looked after on a trip. The staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming, I could not recommend the Carter House Inns enough. The location is in the beautiful historic area of Eureka and we went for a beautiful evening walk after being recommended a route by the staff at the front desk. We also had an incredible meal at the restaurant downstairs.

Review 16:You can hear everything, so if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs!

Review 17:If you are staying in Eureka, this is the place to stay. The Inn is beautiful and really well located. The breakfast was delicious and quite generous. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Review 18:I was given the worst room - first floor, just behind the bar...very noisy, it was hard to fall asleep & stay asleep.

Review 19:Considering Eureka as a relatively high crime rate town, thelocationm of the hotel is great, as a solo woman traveler I felt safe.

Review 20:Zero- Loved it all!

Review 21:We stayed in "The Cottage." It was perfection! Beautiful Victorian, built in 1800's. The inside was contemporary and was very"cottage" luxurious and comfy.

Review 22:Charged for bar bill we didn't use. When I noticed this it was removed but 3 days after we left it was put back on. Needed to call again to have it removed.

Review 23:Nice room with nice amenities. Inn itself is attractive.

Review 24:Can hear everything in hallway and next door rooms. Small room for the price and no choice for hot breakfast. Eureka has seen beter days with lots of derelicts wandering around.

Review 25:The avenue of the giants and fern canyon should not be missed. Fireplace in lobby, snacks and generous glass of wine a nice touch.

Review 26:You could hear a lot of what was going on in other rooms. Not so well soundproofed.

Review 27:Great hotel, great location and great staff. A cool hotel, fine rooms and well appointed. Good bar, friendly staff and very special hotel buliding.

Review 28:Our room was located on the first floor which was exposed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic on L Street. The waitress at breakfast was rather rude and did not seem well informed. The only hot option offered was biscuits, gravy and sausage, which was quite heavy, but we were able to get scrambled eggs after inquiring.

Review 29:This was a nice boutique hotel located within walking distance of old town Eureka. The staff at the reception was very attentive and the complimentary wine at happy hour was an elegant touch.

Review 30:The room was beautiful and the staff made you feel very welcome. Best place to dine is the in-house restaurant. It really was the best meal we have enjoyed out for ages.

Review 31:Having to leave.

Review 32:Absolutely everything, from the wonderful warm reception to the friendly check out. Our room was truly exceptional, with a huge shower and an incredibly comfortable bed - beautifully decorated with no detail neglected. All areas of the hotel appeared clean, bright and welcoming. A great bar with a fantastic happy hour, delicious complimentary canapés each evening, seriously good food, beautifully presented, in the restaurant. I couldn't praise this small gem of a hotel enough.

Review 33:We have only praise for the Inn and our stay.

Review 34:Calm, hospitable, unobtrusive and friendly atmosphere, in a beautifully planned and maintained inn setting. Guest comfort is obviously their first priority. The food was excellent, boh dinner and, especially because unexpected, the luxurious complimentary breakfast.

Review 35:It's in a rough area of town but I guess still walkable to places you'd want to go

Review 36:Staff were very friendly and helpful, the wine + nightly tea + cookies is a fantastically friendly touch. Done a great job at keeping an old building looking fresh

Review 37:Can't think of any negatives and have zero suggestions for improvement.

Review 38:Free up grade, beautifully appointed room, wonderful amenities , courteous, friendly and helpful staff.

Review 39:Amount of time to prepare dinner was a bit long (not bad though). The biggest complaint I have is the room location and window above a vent. I had a hard time falling asleep. If I wasn't so settled in and exhausted I would have asked to switch my room due to the noise. And staff congregates right outside in the ally and was a bit loud chatting. I'm also a light sleeper infortunately. A double-pane more sound proof window would make this cute white room perfect. Though overall, i was very impressed with the quality of the carter house. Would recommend to friends. When we got there we needed some head ache medicine which no one had. Being a nurse I would recommend keeping some travel size Tylenol, Motrin, aspirin (definitely this one bc it could save someone's life in the event of a heart attack & looking at ur age demographic I'm sure half take this med regularly) and possibly tums, and peptobismal available for purchase on site. Would give it that extra "they thought of everything feeling" after a very long drive to Eureka and cost you next to nothing.

Review 40:Loved the free breakfast! I read some mixed reviews on yelp and think those who complained are just the type that will never be happy! My yelp review will only be positive things. Very cute and inviting, very helpful staff especially the girls working the front desk. Great location in town and charm. Very sweet, helpful and professional staff. My breakfast server Sunday morning deserves recognition for her excellent service, as well as the bartender on sat night.

Review 41:Nothing. We were there the night of St. Patrick's Day and couldn't hear the celebration in the bar. Great acoustics for a charming old building

Review 42:Everything. The complimentary breakfast and happy hours are exceptional. The dining room is lovely. And hard to select which entre.

Review 43:Outstanding service, great staff who really seemed to care. Amazing restaurant including a free breakfast that beats anything we've had at a "free breakfast" hotel or B&Bs in our years of travel. Carter Cellar wines are exceptional!

Review 44:Leaving!

Review 45:Superb service and attention to detail from the moment we walked through the door. Great front desk, great bar, great wait staff. Happy staff suggest a well-managed establishment. Good wifi, comfortable bed, nice breakfast. Really, it's all good here.

Review 46:- No air conditioning: we weren't expecting this so it was a bit of a shock (we're from the mid-west where you simply must have air) but opening a window worked just fine because it stays pretty cool in the area, and apparently that's typical.- Make sure you get a room in the "hotel" and not the "bed and breakfast:" The bed and breakfast is cute, but it's called the "Inns" because there's several properties on location. The hotel was the nicest in my opinion and I was glad to have a room there. - The town of Eureka doesn't seem to be anything too exciting, and looks a bit rough around the edges, but the area where the hotel is was decent.

Review 47:- Knowledgeable Staff: they were able to give us directions, maps, and points of interest for the Redwood Forest (which is where we were visiting). We saw things that we never would have stopped to see or took a small detour for if it wasn't for the excellent staff.- Free Breakfast: delicious too with fruit, breads and pastries, coffee and tea, juices, and then a hot option which for us was eggs and french toast! - Free Wifi - Nicest hotel in the area - Great location in town: right on the harbor and close to the historic district - Free Parking: lots of parking closeby and it was well-lit and seemed safe - Comfortable: The lobby area was beautiful with a big fireplace and comfy couches and chairs. The rooms were nice too. Cozy with nice furnishings and they were remodeling all the bathrooms. - In-hotel dining: we had dinner here and it was fantastic! Great selection of wines too! - In-hotel bar: they had the world series on while we were there and the SF team won so it was pretty exciting. - Happy hour food & drinks: they had select wine, cheeses, and other snacks between certain hours to enjoy in the lobby which was a nice touch. Overall we had a great experience at this hotel and would visit again if we were ever in the area.

Review 48:Location was rather close to the 101 and there was traffic noise which disturbed my sleep a bit.

Review 49:Friendly service, comfortable room, good facilities, very nice restaurant.

Review 50:Our room on the ground floor was right next the bar and a little noicy. The breakfast seemed understaffed, the eggs were slow.

Review 51:Nice touch with complementory fruit and cookies in the lobby area. Gorgous space I really enjoyed the way the hotel is layed out. DVD player in the room with library of films to borrow, great!

Review 52:We loved this place all around but when we made the reservation, thephoto we based it off of was the yellow b & b (one of several CarterHouse properties). I mistakenly assumed that's where we werestaying, but at check-in, was shown to a room in the hotel. The hotelwas absolutely lovely, but Bookings.com could do a better job ofclarifying where you are actually staying.

Review 53:Gorgeous facilities. We were greeted like we were movie stars and shownto our room...which was immaculate, light filled, clean and fancy.Lovely bathroom with huge towels, tons of info on the local area and anexcellent breakfast.

Review 54:Window in room on second floor was open when we arrived, and there were several flies inside. We closed window and killed flies before going out for awhile. When we returned the window was open and more flies had entered. Perhaps window screens would be appropriate.

Review 55:What a lovely Inn. The room was very cute and comfortable. The staff was accommodating and friendly. Breakfast was good and dinning room spacious, bright, and clean.

Review 56:This hotel is booked up a lot due to it's popularity - sometimes harder to get into on short notice.

Review 57:Love the amenities offered. Great location. Great breakfast and late night tea and cookies! But best of all are the sheets on the bed!! We visit family in Eureka a lot and this is by far the best place we have found to lay our heads!

Review 58:The breakfast was a tad underwhelming / tasteless

Review 59:Thank you Carter Inn for your beautiful and comfortable rooms, attentive staff, and enticing details such as wine and hors d'oeuvres in the afternoon and cookies and milk before bed. We also had a nice dinner at Restaurant 301 which we were pleased with, and we're very impressed by the extensive wine list and great service.

Review 60:The food offered in the afternoon at 4 PM ran out very soon and was not replenished. If you are going to offer this facility to your guests, you should make sure you do not run out.

Review 61:Condition of the physical facilities, courteous and helpful staff, free wine in afternoon.

Review 62:The food in the restaurant is horribly overpriced. The complementary breakfast was amazing and the staff friendly (Don't forget to tip! They give you a receipt of what the meal would have normally cost to give you an idea of what amount is appropriate) , but I'd suggest going elsewhere in town for lunch and dinner. I made the mistake of having a room service dinner (tired after a long day of driving) and ordered a vegetarian plate that ended up being a huge pile of onion tanglers over a tiny portion of real food.

Review 63:I loved that they were pet friendly (I have a small emotional companion animal and the staff was very understanding). I also enjoyed the cozy and clean rooms. They were decorated in a light eggshell pallet and felt both wonderfully country and contemporary.

Review 64:No air conditioning in rooms.

Review 65:Beautiful place, breakfast was very good, staff was great, Mike the bartender was very knowledgeable, enjoyed talking with him.

Review 66:The staff was wonderful and our rooms were spacious and lovely.

Review 67:Great experience overall with friendly staff, excellent in house dining and the best bath towels every!!!

Review 68:Pleasant stay. Very attentive and friendly staff

Review 69:can't think of anything

Review 70:Great location, lovely staff, nice rooms and close to old town

Review 71:Staff was very friendly. Restaurant menu was very good.

Review 72:Great cocktails

Review 73:Very good location and very comfortable.

Review 74:the picture of the inn is not the place where you stay, it is in a building across the street, not same charme

Review 75:It was all good.

Review 76:Quaint lovely facility. Great staff.

Review 77:our penthouse suite was superb

Review 78:Room clean and airy. Nice area to walk about.

Review 79:Wonderful way to spend three days of being treated so well.

Review 80:Could hear the people in the bedroom above us .

Review 81:Excellent breakfast !!

Review 82:Every aspect was perfect from the facilities to the staff to the restaurant.

Review 83:Only sweet choices for breakfast.

Review 84:Friendly atmosphere.

Review 85:No complaints.

Review 86:Great hotel with very friendly staff and great food.

Review 87:The accommodation facilities and the onsite restaurant 301, were very pleasant. The wine offered at check in, a delightful touch.

Review 88:Lighting in bathroom. Hard to apply make up. Neighborhood (homeless walkers)

Review 89:Having our own place to stay. Kitchen &

Review 90:Exceptional staff and a great mattress made for a wonderful stay.

Review 91:The room 301 is very nice love the tub bed is extremely comfortable

Review 92:Nothing

Review 93:Small and quaint

Review 94:Staff are very informative about the area, even giving us a map of the area.

Review 95:Nothing.

Review 96:The breakfast was to die for, because of our first breakfast we went no where else for meals.

Review 97:Free glass of wine and free breakfast.

Review 98:Friendliness of the staff Comfort of the room Location in Eureka Food - most amazing steak I have EVER had.

Review 99:Wonderful hosts. Gave us a room upgrade without having to even ask. Greatly appreciated.

Review 100:Slept so good it was hard to wake up!

Review 101:Bar too close to rooms, loud noise late. facilities need updating

Review 102:Wine and snacks...location

Review 103:Breakfast was suprisingly ordinary.

Review 104:As a newlywed couple there needed to be some kind of complimentary event whether it be champagne or something of that sort. Additionally, the spa tub did not have any kind bubbles to be used. The bathroom had a missing light bulb and the couch had a very visible stain on the cushion. Furthermore the plug-in fan that was provided was inoperable as the fan blade unit itself was completely detached from the motor unit. Also, considering the top-tier price being paid for such a room it was a surprise that there were no chocolates or a small welcoming basket on the bed. The bathrobes were placed in a closet and should've been wrapped and presented either at the edge of the tub or in the bathroom itself. Collectively, for the price being paid the room was VERY underwhelming. It's not that it wasn't nice, because it was a nice room, however, there did not seem to be anything at all that made the room itself special. Clearly the priced paid was for the season and the 'home' itself but collectively the experience was very underwhelming and left a lot to be desired. Furthermore, a greater sense of attention to detail needs to be given in how the training of new personnel is effected as I called in the evening to assure when the check-out time was in the mornings and the person who answered stated they were brand new and had never 'closed' before and needed to place me on hold. I was left on hold for at least 2-minuntes and still never received an answer. Though the person was nice she was clearly ill-prepared to handle such a rudimentary request. I am not sure of the current business standing of the Carter House Inns however upon our experience it seemed as though a new ownership had purchased the facilities and simply was not aware of even basic hotel management practices not to mention high-end hotel business practices. Our money, sadly, would have been much better served simply staying at a Holiday Express.

Review 105:Breakfast 2-person showers Appetizers

Review 106:the jetted tub offered a relaxing end of the day pleasure. The employees were informative and accommodating. The bar manager gave a detailed info about the Carter and surrounding areas. Very helpful. Food was excellent. Overall a classy comfortable elegant relaxing stay. Thank you

Review 107:Rooms are not as soundproof as we would have liked.

Review 108:Great food at Restaurant 301 and lovely atmosphere in the lounge and lobby areas. Beds were very comfortable.

Review 109:Wonderful inn. Friendly and helpful staff. Nicely appointed rooms and suites. Nice restaurant. Great location - easy walk to explore historic old town and easy access to scenic roads.

Review 110:breakfast special a bit too complex and inharmonious in terms of taste (but this is definitely personal from a european palate... ;) )

Review 111:friendly staff, great comfort

Review 112:The rooms were extremely comfortable and relaxing. The old world charm of the inn was relaxing. The location next to old town was convenient while also accessible to the main road through Eureka. Great place to relax after a day of hiking in the Redwoods Parks.

Review 113:I recommend staying in the old Victorian building over the new buildingwhere the restaurant and reception are located.

Review 114:It's the best place to stay and most likely done in Eureka.

Review 115:View of parking lot, rather small room, would have preferred different view but not offered choice even though many rooms were empty

Review 116:Softest sheets ever, included amenities (wine/snacks, tea/cookies, free wifi, luxury breakfast), attentive personnel

Review 117:Nothing worth mentioning.

Review 118:Food was very good, service was exceptional, architecture and decor werein fine taste. We have stayed there several times and plan to again.

Review 119:The free breakfast was just okay. The portion size was a little small and the bacon was very overdone.

Review 120:The room was very quaint and comfortable. The Inn was centrally located and had easy access to the waterfront and the old town area.
