Reviews for Magnuson Hotel and Convention Center Oyster Point

Review 1:The wallpaper was peeling, the tub was peeling and old. There was a strong foul smell in the lobby and in the hallways. The coffeemaker in the room did not work. Ice machine did not work on our floor.

Review 2:The space in the room was good.the bed was comfortable.

Review 3:The nightclub was loud. Other than that, the place seemed deserted. With old-fashioned upscale furnishings, it was almost spooky.

Review 4:Clean, comfortable, a fantastic deal!

Review 5:Parking for hotel gas was horrible the night club Ray took up most of the parking from the hotel guess something needs to be arranged with the night club and the hotel where certain parking spaces are designated strictly for hotel guests only this is the biggest problem I saw in my stay.

Review 6:The night auditor when I checked in was very helpful and friendly that means a lot my room was very clean and comfortable.

Review 7:when I checked in the floor I was on was filthy and there was a giant hair ball in front of my room's door. the ice machine on my floor didn't work and I had to go to a different floor to get ice

Review 8:location was the best part. it was VERY close to the interstate.

Review 9:Do not stay here!!!! They have roaches, the staff is unprofessional& they did not give me a refund after I had to kill and show themthe roach!!! The motel's are better then this trashy place!

Review 10:The parking was horrible, walked in an the clubs music was very loud, while trying to check in the lady was constantly talking to her friend an ignoring me, too many people were loitering in the lobby from the club, the room was nasty, the wallpaper was coming off in several places, 2 outlets didn't work, the manager was too busy to talk to us

Review 11:The price

Review 12:The air conditioning wasn't working properly. The bath tub was cracking everytime I moved in the shower.

Review 13:King size bed was comfortable, room was clean

Review 14:Difficult warming a bottle when there wasn't a microwave in the rooms. The fridge wasn't cold enough to keep my frozen items frozen, even after I adjusted it. Other than that, the room was great.

Review 15:First room had heavy must smell. It looked like the refrigerator had leaked for a long while a rotten the wood cabinet. Lobby smelled heavily of fired oil from sports bar that was not separated from hotel.

Review 16:Good location, staff helpful.

Review 17:Overall the customer service at this hotel was horrible. There was an older woman working at the front desk who completely ignored me.

Review 18:We payed $50 for the room through an online booking agency.

Review 19:We were tired when we got in and got a room right away. Nice that there was a place to eat on site. Was a Sports bar, but the food and drink were very good. Plus very cheap as we were there during happy hour. From the time we got in, the staff at the hotel and wait staff in the Sports bar were very friendly and helpful.

Review 20:room 412 smelled bad, like mildew and 410 heat didnt work

Review 21:The staff is always courteous and respectful. Pool and sauna was relaxing and warm and working. The wings from the restaurant were delicious. The only issue i had was it smelled of like mildew in our room (room 412),and the other room we paid for (410) the heat didnt work and it was an infant in there. Id recommend people there for comfort, price, snd cleanliness though.Neil at tge front desk was courteous. Thank you to Magnuson Nn.

Review 22:When I checked out I was given a receipt and on the back side was a receipt of another person. This included name, address, credit card number etc. Very dangerous. I shredded the information but just hope my information was not also shared.

Review 23:Rundown. Needs repairs. The adjacent nightclub is very noisy and scary and the clientele spilled over into the hotel.

Review 24:Crystal at the front desk was very helpful. Great location and price.

Review 25:Room smelled nasty. Bathroom floor was filthy especially in the corners. Furniture was broken. Cable connection in the wall was ajar and looked suspicious.

Review 26:Leaving

Review 27:The staff was rude when I asked to speak with a manager they denied me, I will never stay at this place again. They had dead bugs in the bathroom when we checked in. People next to us were very loud. Worse experience ever.!!!

Review 28:The cheap price

Review 29:The sports bar is open to the lobby and the rap music with constant swearing was not appreciated. If I had little kids with I would have been angry. They would have been in the lobby listening to that inappropriate language.

Review 30:Good hotel at a really fair price.

Review 31:Bedbugs! I work for a pest control company, and have made it a habit to inspect my hotel room for bedbugs, based on the numerous nightmare experiences many of my customers have gone through. Before bringing my items into my room, I did a cursory inspection. There was an odd odor to my room, but that didn't register immediately. Checking the mattress and box springs, I found a few scattered droppings, but everything poops...it could just have been a spider passing through. But sure enough, inspecting the headboard, I found a live bedbug. The clerk was polite and apologetic, but the next room had even more bedbug evidence (droppings, shed skin casings) on the box spring. And no mattress or box spring covers! By this point, I was ready to check out, and the manager, who was now involved was happy to see me go. He even had the nerve to tell me that I was costing him money, tearing up his rooms. I reminded him that I was actually saving him money, by finding the little beasts before future customers came back with expensive pest control bills, demanding to be reimbursed. I ended up staying at the Motel 6. A bit of a dive, but a clean room, friendly staff, and no bedbugs.

Review 32:I was attracted by the reasonable price.

Review 33:Unable to use bathtub--nothing to hold onto, dangerous getting in/out, nowhere to hang towel; swimming pool had swirling white chlorine on top, hot tub was cold without chlorine, only handicap accessible entrance was through the pool area and smoking section. Mildew/mold/peeling wallpaper in hallways. Only food source was an onsite cigar bar that was closed most of the time. Nothing nearby, hilly parking lot and front entry.

Review 34:Room was large and had two chairs and low table

Review 35:Wish I had a in room microwave.. but i was roomed beside to ice machine and microwave which was a big plus.. ty

Review 36:I had a great still @ the Magnuson. I would recommend it to others. It's was a full house on my visit..

Review 37:scary furnishings, broken elevator, 24 hours to fix remote on tv. blood stain on mattress noted to staff. Worn out furnishings. Only plasma tv is in lobby all outdated , raggedy furniture and rugs with no amenities. I would not even try the pool. Looks like something out of the Munster's house.

Review 38:nothing

Review 39:Wall was coming apart and bathroom shower had mildew stains. Room had a smell when you first enter into it.

Review 40:The bed was comfortable. Traffic flow was good. The club was not disturbing to me at all.

Review 41:Where do I start with this place? The tile that was missing from the shower, the wallpaper that was peeling from the wall, one decent pillow and one fiber filled sack on each bed, the damaged furniture that was stained to cover the damage, the coating at the bottom of the tub that was missing, the wet towels that my wife found in the floor of the closet upon check in, the extremely strong aroma of cleaner, or would it be mildew smell that greets you after you step out of the elevator on the pool level. The beds were somewhat comfortable and the sheets were clean... I wouldn't stay again, but if you are desperate and don't have alot of money... This is the place for you!!!!

Review 42:The price was the only thing that I enjoyed about this place

Review 43:The room started to smell like chemicals during the night while we were sleeping. The shower creek ed really bad and the nozzle almost came off the wall. The fridge didn't work properly.

Review 44:The hotel is right off the highway.

Review 45:Room had VERY strong smell of smoke, despite being a non smoking hotel....we had 6 rooms on the 3rd floor and they all smelled. Trash and beer bottles all over the lobby in the morning from the club, didn't feel safe returning to the hotel at 10:30 pm because of the club atmosphere and no onsite restaurant or café. I DO NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.

Review 46:Good location is all I can say nice about this hotel.

Review 47:the staff are the worst. They are rude and so unprofessional. Some of the rooms are old with a mildew smell. The pool look like it was dirty (could not see bottom of pool very foggy) They didn't have any breakfast or a restaurant. dirty comforters on bed and used towels hanging up in bathroom.. They never came to clean room just dropped off towel for a three day stay. The staff sucks, management was even worse. this hotel need some help bad.

Review 48:The location

Review 49:There was a moment when the elevators weren't working, but I didn't mind taking the stairs! While I didn't use the WiFi, my guest said that it was really slow.

Review 50:The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. The staff was very accommodating. The decor was elegant, albeit a little outdated.

Review 51:Location and price. The indoor pool was dirty looking and out of order, so that was kinda lame. And no free continental breakfast was surprising. Great place for our purposes though. Thanks.

Review 52:The likes are canceled out by the smell of this place. This place smelled so disgusting, the most toxic air freshener I've ever smelled. I could smell the stink mid parking lot before I even walked in. And my room smelled 4x that bad. I had brought lots of organic food with me and I had to throw my bread out because it absorbed the smell and tasted like my room. The birds didn't even want it. My stomach ached. I would never stay here again.

Review 53:The King room is rather large, I liked the view of the woods from the window, the temperature seemed to always be perfect, refrigerator/freezer in room, iron/iron board, two large windows, room down the hall with microwave, ice machine and vending machine. Indoor pool. I was able to check in 2-hours early with no extra charge.

Review 54:The room was dusty and the tub was hideous. Paint was chipping away from the bottom and the shower was difficult to turn on/off. The entire tile wall buckled each time you turned the shower on/off. The front desk staff was rude and nonchalaent when asked about services listed on webpage that the hotel doesn't offer. The gentleman who checked us out was kind and competent - hope he's the manager! Too bad we didn't see him until checkout. The pool was murky with a film on top so we did not use. No other amenities ate really offered except for small gym.

Review 55:The room was very cheap - $52+ taxes a night and the location is fantastic. Since we were gone all day and night and simply needed a place to sleep, it worked.

Review 56:The pool was not working, there was no restaurant or snack bar available, the halls and rooms smelled musty and most of the snack machine were empty. Very disappointed! The only person we saw was the desk manager.

Review 57:The beds were comfortable.

Review 58:At check in process we witnessed inappropriate filming in a guest room, questionable behavior on an elevator, and people grilling food in the parking lot. All reported to desk clerk and later reported to Kendra at the corporate office. Awaiting a return call from Marianne from the corp. office. Desk clerk on duty unwilling to cancel my reservation or take any information about the incidents going on.

Review 59:Nothing due to inappropriate behavior in the hotel, filming, and unusual behavior in the parking lot. Desk staff on duty not helpful. Later reported to corporate office.

Review 60:We requested a first floor room if possible, but were given a top 9th floor room. I couldn't find a hotel information booklet in the room. There were water stains on the ceilings seemingly from the sprinkler system and some splitting of wallpaper in spots. We had to request a bed spread for one of the beds because it wasn't there. Sink fixtures weren't shiny. I could wipe them off to make them shine. The pool looked murky and we couldn't see the bottom. The next day it looked better as it was being cleaned.

Review 61:The linens and towels were bright white and clean. Shower temperature and water pressure were great. We used the iron and blow dryer that were provided. The elevator was speedy. The location to the college was good.

Review 62:It is a night club at the hotel not that that was a problem but would have like to have known. I got back from concert and there was no place to park.

Review 63:Was in town one night for a concert. Room was nice especially for the price.

Review 64:Very loud, with big bar attached. Lots of old furniture stacked up in lobby. Must have been a busier place in its day. Comforter on bed was dirty and old, like an old worn yellow blanket

Review 65:Stayed here with my teenager to visit Christopher Newport University. Typical room with two doubles, clean and comfortable. Great location, immediately off highway and close driving distance to college.

Review 66:No microwave in individual rooms, pool wasn't as clean as it should be, no complimentary breakfast

Review 67:Location, indoor pool (could have been kept up a little better)

Review 68:Pool was nasty!! We didnt step foot near it. A lot of constructiontaking place. Nightclub in the evening had the parking lot completlyfull. Had to lug my kids thru a dark parking lot not close to the hotel.Hotel guest should receive some type of Parking pass to get prioritywith spots

Review 69:Price was cheaper than others in the area. When booking I liked thatthere was an indoor pool for the kids.

Review 70:Not the cleanest hotel. Lots of broken furniture, but clean towels and bathroom. Hot tub out of order. Restaurant under renovation. First room smelled of smoke. Staff relocated us to another room - was fine. I will not return to this hotel.

Review 71:Staff was friendly and accommodating.

Review 72:The hotel was kind of old and worn, and could use some updates and renovations to the rooms. The ceilings and wallpaper showed a lot of damage. No restaurant available

Review 73:This was a comfortable and quiet hotel with good sized rooms. It was probably a very nice hotel at one time.

Review 74:Furnishings in the room need to be updated as well as the wall paper and carpet. Hopefully that will be part of the next phase of renovations. For it to be a non smoking hotel there was a strong smell of smoke in the hall and in my room on the third floor. Its an apparent problem because there was a sign posted in the elevator reminding people not to smoke.

Review 75:I like the location; i stay here once or twice a year and enjoy the nice breakfast options when the restaurant is open; currently closed for renovations.

Review 76:The grounds of this hotel needs much cleaning and improvements. Smelling chlorine when entering effects people with allergies,(not much do to about that), Lobby carpet very dirty-may need to be replace. My wife had to dust the room which was very dusty.

Review 77:great location

Review 78:Beds were comfortable but small. Definitely not a Queen, more like a Full. There was a Red Stain on the carpet (looks like it could have been juice and could have been easily cleaned if they cleaned it right away). There are no microwaves in the room!!!!

Review 79:Upon arrival, I was pretty scared to see what the rooms looked like because of previous reviews. Checked in at the front desk and they were really friendly. I had a late check in (11pm). Room was clean, beds were comfortable and for the amount our stay was fine. They had an indoor pool and jacuzzi but the jacuzzi was out of order.

Review 80:There were red stains on the carpet. Bathroom was not as clean as I liked and the comforter did not look like it had been washed, or at least throughly washed. The shower was not clean the shower curtain had stains on it. There is also a "club" connected to it. When we came back to the hotel around 1130 or 12 Friday night , the lobby was full of people who were barely dressed and were disruptive and inappropriate. I did not want to walk into that kind of an environment. Many others walking through the lobby were very shocked as well.

Review 81:The size of the bed was nice.

Review 82:the t.v in the king bedroom was so small , not like in the double bedroom where there was a flatscreen tv .... in the king room the tv was far from the bed we could barley see the screen and that im guessing was also due to the smallness of the tv which was an old school box tv , if you will, also the outlets in the room were far from the bed i guess i was expecting the king room to be better than the double bedroom ..also in the king room the wall paper was coming off the walls , the ac unit in the room was not working properly i woke up in the middle of the night with hot flashes bc it was so hot ....also when i was at check in the lady checking me in was unprofessional .....also pryor to checking in i called just to ask a few questions all have to say is Ghetto staff . ALSO, I NORMALLY BRING MY OWN TOWEL WHEN I GO TO CHEAPER HOTELS IT SLIPPED MY MIND THIS TIME , I WENT INTO THE BATHROOM GRABED A TOWEL AND THERE WERE BROWN STAINS ON THE TOWEL ALONG WITH PUBIC OR FACIAL HAIR STUCK IN THE TOWEL ....ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS NEVER EVER AGAIN.....

Review 83:i stayed here once before and the double bedroom is way better than the king bedroom i will never get a king bedroom again .

Review 84:The location was very convenient for us. The hotel lobby was very nice, our room was great as well, staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was always cleaned in a timely manner. Only complaint I have was that the area around the could have been cleaned better and wish the spa would have been working.

Review 85:they're mid-remodel, which left some odd aromas and obviously not done parts.

Review 86:it was the perfect place, as far as getting where i needed to be, and having a good base to come back to both nights. The room was comfy and well suited to traveling just myself and my daughter.

Review 87:to start with, very little if any hot water ever reached my room. The toilet needed to be flushed after (I guess housekeeping) cleaned the bathroom. In the room, the smoke detector as well as a few other items were hanging from the walls. And as much as I travel, it was the first hotel room that I have ever been in without and alarm clock/radio. The mini fridge/freezer, while convenient, the freezer needed a good defrosting, it was packed with thick ice.

Review 88:the area that the property is located was very convenient to where I needed to be for the weekend. It was relatively quite

Review 89:I did not like the smell of the hotel. The front desk could have been more professional. When I arrived the front desk personnel was taking a personal phone call as she checked me in. The person that checked me out just took my key and did not ask me if I like my stay or if I needed a detail receipt.

Review 90:I like the location, it was close to where we needed to be. The price was great.

Review 91:Although the rooms were clean the furniture was dated. It needed some up grading. The shower water was hot and didn't allow you to adjust it to cold.

Review 92:Its a very nice hotel. The lobby area was warm and inviting. The staff was very nice and friendly. I liked the upgrades to the bathroom near the conference room. The courtyard was nice and clean.

Review 93:i did not like the fact that there wasn't any breakfast. The staff was ok i was greeted more by house keeping then the front desk .. the front desk staff were not that personable. the toilet in my room kept running,

Review 94:the room was comfortable, its in a great location , they have an indoor pool

Review 95:The fact I took the tick to the front, the receptionist said she would let the manager know, but I never was ever contacted. Then my daughter had been bitten by something and had 2 big knots on her arm...then I was bitten on my back with a oversized knot....and several times on my right leg.

Review 96:Everything else was ok...the room was good....and comfortable.

Review 97:The bathtub in the room needed replacing. It was worn down to raw materials and was not comforting to have small children bathe. One of my children said she got a splinter from the tub but I do not know if this is so. There was only a burst of hot water and it was over. Odd for a hotel. room cold also.

Review 98:Liked where it was. Liked the overall layout and the staff was polite, helpful, and very kind. The price was perfect.

Review 99:My floor smelled like smoke, even though it was a non-smoking floor. The lobby area smelled like old fried food. The bed mattresses on the bed were very lumpy.

Review 100:The staff was very courteous

Review 101:Mattress on the bed needed to be replaced. Kept sinking to the middle so I couldn't comfortably sleep on my side

Review 102:Overall the hotel was very nice and the staff was great

Review 103:We couldn't figure out how to control the temperature, it either blasted freezing cold air, or nothing at all. Also, the fan in the bathroom did not work.

Review 104:Breakfast was to have been included and we were informed the morning of that breakfast would "not be opening". Not only was I not able to feed my child, but we were not offered a refund for any amount to offset not having the breakfast that should've been included and we also weren't offered at the very least fruit, mini boxed cereal, or anything else that would be standard with continental breakfast that one would assume would be readily available and on hand. And when I asked about either a minimal refund ($5 or $10 per person would be more than sufficient) or something to take with us, I was met with "I haven't been authorized to do that" (well, CAN YOU ASK?????). FINALLY, I was offered to go into their snack-purchases area to select something. I walked away with a $1 granola bar for my child and had to go spend even more money for a more substantial meal.

Review 105:Nice hotel, great indoor pool, clean, spacious rooms. Great location, shopping and restaurants very nearby (could've walked, though would've been a bit of a walk, so chose not to, since unfamiliar with the area).

Review 106:The kids screaming in the hall at 7:30 a.m.

Review 107:Wonderful facility. The lobby is very inviting and our room was wonderful. It's close to the airport and just about everything.

Review 108:The continental breakfast was less than a sorry excuse for hospitality. The entire property was past its prime and in need of updates. The hot tub was closed due to low bromine at 2pm on Saturday, it was still closed when we left at 10 am on Monday. The heated indoor pool temp was 60 degrees.

Review 109:The bed was very comfortable. The shower was above average. The overnight front desk worker was exceptional. The room was spacious.

Review 110:Non-smoking room and floor still smelled like smoke. Not all outlets and lights worked.

Review 111:I enjoyed the area and the quality of the room. The staff was friendly and willing to assist as needed. Awesome hotel!!

Review 112:It needs to be remodeled. You had to walk down the hallway to use the microwave.

Review 113:It was quite

Review 114:Very nice hotel??? Best value for the dollar

Review 115:location

Review 116:The location was very good, close to alot of things to do.

Review 117:Historically as an Omni this was a nice facility. It is obvious that it needs significant updating, maintenance, and cleaning.

Review 118:Location.

Review 119:Everything

Review 120:Very old tv. No breakfast.

Review 121:Big lobby.

Review 122:No breakfast

Review 123:Location

Review 124:hot tub out of order. Loud noise from nightclub in the lobby.

Review 125:The cleanliness of the room

Review 126:The bed was very comfortable

Review 127:The comfortable bed and beautiful room. The great rate and onsite parking i will be returning in November 2015

Review 128:It was convient, the hallways smelled bad at night it was so loud it woke me out my sleep pool area could use some work over all not DAT bad

Review 129:Everything was ok

Review 130:The pool and bar

Review 131:They could use a exhaust fan in the bathroom. They was no extra coffee cups left or drinking cups.

Review 132:I liked the Sports Bar! The beds where comfortable.

Review 133:No remote and had to go and get our own towels.

Review 134:Area and quiet
