Reviews for The Modern Honolulu
Review 1:Still waiting for status update on lost jewellery.
Review 2:The whole concept, well thought through. Great location, we got a bit of sea view though we booked street view, great Japanese restaurant.
Review 3:Gorgeous hotel and facilities made even better by the friendliness and attentiveness of all the staff. Our room was well appointed with a gorgeous view. It felt intimate and relaxed and a great oasis to relax in.
Review 4:Activities booked through concierge were all booked to one room and had to be divided between 2 rooms on checkout at 04:30 which was a frustrating experience.
Review 5:Location, Location, Location.
Review 6:We decided to have dinner at the Japanese Restaurant onsite one night and booked an outdoor table. The setting is beautiful however that's where the good review ends. The service was not what you would expect from a Restaurant of this calibre. We were given menus and left to make our decision. Once the waiter returned to take our order he advised that the restaurant was out of 4 of the mains on the menu, which of course were the items that we had decided upon. We asked about ordering a salmon sashimi while we relooked at the menu, the sashimi is sold per piece and at $6 per slice we felt it was very expensive and as there wasn't anything else available that we wanted, we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. We went to Chef Chai's which is a short walk away and can totally recommend the food and service there.
Review 7:Great location away from the craziness of Waikiki, but of course you need to experience it and its an easy 20 minute walk. Pool area is great and the rooms are very comfortable. There are many great restaurants close by and would recommend these rather than eating at the Hotel which is expensive and the one lunch that we had was very average.
Review 8:Position of room. Too noisy near main road so couldn't have balcony door open for very long. Aircon too noisy.
Review 9:Comfort of room and modern fittings and fixtures. Friendly staff. Nice breakfast.
Review 10:Repairs going on but we were warned-lost our inclusive breakfast but made it all good- so really nothing to complain about at all.
Review 11:It's just a very nice hotel all over - from beds pool bar pool and shop- reception helpful and good standard of food and drink at the pool bar -luxury that is worth it.
Review 12:View, no balcony as advertised. Couple of front of house poor.
Review 13:Lovely hotel but was given a room with a very ordinary view with two double beds in it which I didn't require or ask for. I felt a bit like a second class citizen when talking to front of house, everyone else was helpful. I probably wouldn't stay there again. Quite out of the way. Morimoto's restaurant astonishingly good I would recommend it to anyone who goes to Honolulu.
Review 14:Location was better at the cheaper beach front places nearby. The Modern is a bit clinical probably better suited to couples than families.
Review 15:Lovely modern hotel
Review 16:The adults only pool is ridiculous. The wooden frame around the bed is dangerous - I kicked my ankle on the last morning and had a painful, bruised ankle for the next two weeks. The partial ocean view room was in need of a good clean, carpet was stained and shower needed a scrub, there was mould on the shower door. Housekeeping was very late afternoon most days, which wasn't convenient for us.
Review 17:we had two bookings at this hotel. The first room was very clean and housekeeping was done in the morning.
Review 18:Just a little too removed from the beach and the Main Street in waikiki. It would be perfect in everyway if you could pick it up and move it onto the beach! Still lovely views of beach and the Marina though.
Review 19:The hotel is gorgeous and very cosmopolitan. Best pool atmoshphere in waikiki!
Review 20:Small small complaint that maybe the pull side cocktails and food were a tad overpriced.
Review 21:The amazing friendly staff. The understated glamorous decor. The restaurant. The a la carte breakfast. The free coffee and wifi. We truly loved this place.
Review 22:Hard to find one. Not all rooms have a bathtub.
Review 23:Loved everything! The clean atmosphere of the room, great amenities, nice pool to chill around and nearby Waikiki beach on foot. Will surely be back again.
Review 24:A guest laundry would be good.
Review 25:Was like an upper end hotel and very friendly and client-oriented at the same time. The concierge service was great - really made planning easy and followed up on everything. Room servicing staff were very hard working and friendly. Facilities and services around the pool were excellent - a great place to relax, dine and have a drink.
Review 26:Room service could be a little better (they just forgot some details sometimes) but the management took our comments to heart so I feel they care about guests opinion and will improve on that in the future.
Review 27:Good location, great general feeling, a lot of facilities available at place. Rooms are very nice, fully equipped and not cheesy (like in other hotels) :) very nice pools, hotel is not too crowdy so it was very comfortable. Great restaurant at place (Marimoto Waikiki). Easy to access.
Review 28:The pool was closed for an event the day I arrived which was a little disappointing.
Review 29:Chic, fabulous and wonderful welcoming staff. The room was incredible with a great view and the pool was beautiful.
Review 30:The bed was a little hard for my liking, BUT you can't please everyone and may be perfect for people who like a firmer bed. There was also a little noise from the club on Friday and Saturday but didn't affect sleep - just aim for a higher level floor.
Review 31:Really enjoyed the location, friendliness of staff and cleanliness of hotel. The pool staff were on point with drink, food and towel service. Complimentary SunBum sunscreen and fruit flavoured iced water on tap are a great touch.
Review 32:Poolbar closes quite early which is a pity, however, we could take our drinks from inside with us to sit at the pool after late arrival.
Review 33:very nice view; received an upgrade on arrival
Review 34:I had bad experiences at pool bar and adult pool. I think the adult pool should be a swimming pool not a shallow pool. I received no service while at the pool, i had to get up walk through the sand, get my food, and drink, etc...The rooms were not really updated as easily as they could be. The plugs were in the wrong location for using the computer. This is so easy to fix.
Review 35:I liked the simplicity of the room.Eric G was good..
Review 36:Fridge did not work, hotel knew, but only gave us another on request, but didnt remove broken one And surprised that a dead cockroach lay in the corridor near our door for most of the week, much to my childrens amusement
Review 37:Good location, good pool deck, helpful concierge, nice feel of the place and enjoyed the food by the pool
Review 38:like most of the other hotels in honolulu, it was too expensive for my opinion. it is a big hotel, attentive and professional staff but you will not get any individual service or attention.
Review 39:beautifully designed hotel
Review 40:Sadly The Modern did not live up to my expectations, especially after their excellent pre-stay communication. The check-in desks are battered with peeling paint, which wasn't the best first impression & set the overall theme. Our rooms were nice but a bit tired, with stained carpet and tatty information sheets (clearly used). They also turned out to be EXTREMELY noisy (924 and 922 - entrance side of the building). Sadly due to being fully booked they couldn't move us until the second night, and then they forgot to contact us about the room move, so we continued with earplugs. Housekeeping arrived before 8am and woke my parents up by coming into their room. And when they came back, did a poor job, leaving dirty washcloth and trash. The pool area is nice, if slightly tired as well, and is really suited to a younger party crowd, with loud house / dance music all day. I think I was so looking forward to staying here that I was particularly disappointed with our experience.
Review 41:The rooms were a generous size and they resolved most issues quickly. The pool area is nice, if slightly tired, and its nice to have an adults pool option.
Review 42:Had to get ice from room service. Elevators slow. Cocktail lounge dreary and drinks were expensive. Had to wait to get lounge chairs at poolside. Not all machines in exercise room worked. Had to wait for valet car service.
Review 43:Clean, bright room. Good value for money. Free bottled water. Nice free amenities for room (coffee/tea service, blender, yoga mat.) Nice staff.
Review 44:over booked with a conference.who dominated the hotel including the pool and .eating facilities .the pool to small for the numbers no beach access a 15 minute walk to the middle of Waikiki centre 2nd pool for adults is only 6inches deep only a paddling pool not for swimming
Review 45:very friendly staff and excellent service
Review 46:Our only small quip would be the size of the pools. Not any easy fix, but for the level of occupancy the pool was extremely crowded
Review 47:The rooms are lovely and simple clean lines, great staff. We really enjoyed both our stays at The Modern
Review 48:Food & drink service around the pool, and at the poolside restaurant was a bit slow. Didn't like (didn't realise hotel is pet friendly) dogs in the pool area. Beds too low & kept bashing shins on platform beds sit on.
Review 49:Loved the greeting, the service, the extra inclusions, the hotel staff & Morimoto restaurant.
Review 50:This was advertised as a luxurious hotel for relaxing and escaping the day to day race of the world. It's location to shops, restaurants and facilities is perfect. The in house room service is excellent, with food to die for! It is very clean and well serviced. But that's really where it stops. They advertise pools with lovely day beds to lounge around on but you have to pay $150 to reserve one (on top of the excessive amount you've already paid for the room). The adult pool you can't actually swim in (only lie in), while the pool that is accessible to everyone isn't huge, with twice as many daybeds for people as swimmers. The spa is also ridiculously overpriced. Finally in this advertised retreat they have a nightclub- where again the booths are for people who pay to reserve them and you can hear the music on the 6th floor Thurs-Sun up until 2am.
Review 51:Location a bit of a walk into the main part of Waikiki. Homeless issue around the area next to the park which can be intimidating at night.
Review 52:Style, ambience and great facilities.
Review 53:My Experience in this hotel was disastrous. Apart from the reception staff at checkin in/out all my other interactions with staff was, quite frankly a joke, at best they were disinterested at worst rude. This hotel does not deserve the star rating it has.
Review 54:No bad experiences.
Review 55:Rooms were very nice, very comfortable. Restaurants were all good, and easy light breakfast was available if you wanted it. Poolside yoga was really great.
Review 56:To be honest, I was initially a little disappointed that the room wasn't a bit bigger and more luxurious for the price we were paying, but I was comparing it to the luxury hotels we stayed in whilst in Portugal for a fraction of the price. Also wondered why there was a heavy wood shutter covering half the window and obscuring the view and not able to be pushed off the window.
Review 57:We liked the location, slightly out of the mainstream and also the fact that it was a bit more modern than most of the Waikiki hotels. The pool area was lovely and great for children and couples also. We really enjoyed our stay there to finish off our holiday.
Review 58:ok two days in a row we were locked out of our room. the first time we understood because we had to add a night, prior to leaving Aust. the second day it happened we weren't at all happy. however they changed the lock and gave us some extras on bill, f.o.c. we had also ordered some wine and glasses from room service. 50 mins. later nothing. in the end I went to the bar and got the bottles and glasses myself! bad news.
Review 59:staff apart from our room service issue and being locked out issue - fabulous! extremely efficient and knowledgeable.
Review 60:The only downfall to this hotel is the location. It is not central to the main streets at all. In saying that the service does make up for this, and it is just a short walk to shopping centre Ala Moana.
Review 61:The service was fantastic. The welcome drink on arrival and even the champagne sent up to our room was beautiful and unexpected. The rooms were clean and the modern shower base with glass screen was a bonus (no dirty shower curtain sticking to you every two seconds whilst you shower). Amenities were refreshed daily irrespective of use and they were all sealed so you knew they hadn't been opened by prior guests. The pool was spectacular and easy to get a seat at. A big bonus was the pool seat covers placed over the banana lounges you selected for ease of use, comfort and so the lounges don't stick or burn you. Little frozen treats would circulate the pool throughout the day and they were beautiful. Don't stress if you have a room near the elevator - we did and it was no louder than being away from the elevator. We were directly in front of the lifts and had no issues with noise. Overall loved this hotel and would definitely book again if not wanting to be in the main streets of Waikiki.
Review 62:Ask for a quiet room towards the back of hotel. In the front rooms, towards the street, you can hear the traffic all night.
Review 63:Room was very comfortable. Staff very accommodating. Beautiful hotel. Excellent sushi restaurant on property.
Review 64:The hot water wasn't as hot as expected, however this was looked at straight away by the maintenance staff, and was blissful from then on. 5/5 for response and service.
Review 65:The staff were attentive, caring and we felt very well looked after.
Review 66:Noise from the road was very noticeable & we were on the 12th floor!! We did mention @ checkout & were told they are upgrading windows currently.
Review 67:Loved the location, the pool, really the entire hotel was beautiful. Love this hipper style of hotel as opposed to chandeliers in the lobby!!!
Review 68:Beautiful Hotel, staff is great, location is good, short walk to the beach, but the pool is awesome! Morimoto's Restaurant is right there and it is uber awesome!
Review 69:Price! Noisy rooms, seems a little dated and "cheaply" done for remodel. MAD expensive parking, Walk to beach was unappealing.
Review 70:Location, design, staff, ambiance.
Review 71:A litte bit far to walk to the main cafe area so a taxi needed in most cases.
Review 72:Being away from the families along the beach front. More couples than families and the adult pool area is great. Walking distance to the shopping centre.
Review 73:Not the best wifi- intermittent at best.
Review 74:Excellent staff, especially the concierge. Great location for Waikiki and other O'ahu attractions. Car hire outlets just over the road.
Review 75:THE NOISE. We stayed during the weekend and saturday night til about 4am we could hear people on the street outside the "Addiction" nightclub downstairs.
Review 76:modern design, comfortable bed and room.
Review 77:Prom party was a little bit out of control when we came back from dinner but we didn't hear any noise from our room so all good fun
Review 78:We were on our honeymoon and received an upgrade by the front desk, the hotel was gorgeous, lovely pool with drink service as we swam, cool bar downstairs, gorgeous room.
Review 79:Breakfast was good, but expensive.
Review 80:The Modern is an excellent choice if you want to escape the frantic hustle and bustle of Waikiki but still be close to the centre of town.
Review 81:Too short stay wish spend days in the hotel
Review 82:The friendlyness of the staffs. Quick respond to the problems. Inter act with guest.good management team. Ideal location.
Review 83:This is a small boutique like hotel orientated for adults but still child friendly. Certainly does not have the feel of the big resort chains but this is what adds to its charm. Staff excellent, a little out of the way from the main strip but that added to its charm for us- recommended
Review 84:The hotel food was only decent and extremely over priced for what u received. The morimoto restaurant was great but nothing original Seemed like a knockoff of Nobu which I would prefer over this place
Review 85:The layout of the hotel, the clean white decor and the smell throughout the lobby and common areas was amazing
Review 86:Amazing staff, amazing location, amazing value, nice modern rooms, very clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend and we hope to stay there again! Mahalo!
Review 87:Club Addiction, although not the hotel it is unfortunately, the neighbor. If the club had cooler art, visuals lights etc. it might be a fun addition to the hotel area.
Review 88:Breakfast Waffle with Banana
Review 89:The equipments such as dryers are sometimes did not work well. We were 8 with 4 rooms, thus we had the opportunity to compare each rooms cleaning and figured out that some cookies sometimes prepared after room cleanings and some are not. So we guess it still can improve regarding service quality, at least making it all the rooms fare.
Review 90:The size of room is ver appropriate, neat and comfortable bed are equipped. I personally loved it's view of the yachts from balcony and the pool side, as well as the walking distanced beach. This was for me the second time staying in Hawaii, and made our memorable days perfect.
Review 91:Love everything about this hotel. Second time we have stayed there now. Was upgraded to a lovely Ocean view room. Love the pool and bar. Cute little gift shop too.
Review 92:The concierge and bell staff were extremely helpful and friendly giving me tips about local events that helped me fill the day with interesting experiences while waiting for a midnight flight. The hotel was beautiful comfortable and immaculate.
Review 93:The chairs at the pool filled up fast in some days. The food was on the speedy side.
Review 94:Everything was high quality, the linens, bath products, food, and pool area. We had a "city view" that had a great view of the harbor. Morning coffee was a nice touch. There are many restaurants within walking distance as well.
Review 95:Nothing - everything was great!
Review 96:This hotel has a fabulous location overlooking the marina and perfect for viewing the Friday night firework display at the Hilton. Staff are very friendly and obliging. Our suite was bright, white, clean and comfy and the pool and bar areas are terrific.
Review 97:We had booked a room 6 months in advance but on arriving we were kept waiting for two hours before being allocated a room. It was only after several visits to the reception desk and my wife's insistence that we were given an alternate room as ours was still not ready. Sitting around wasting an afternoon is not what you need after a tiring journey.
Review 98:The hotel has a good location a few minutes walk from the beach at the quieter end of Waikiki. The staff are friendly and helpful and service is good especially around the pool. Rooms are comfortable and very clean.
Review 99:The service of the rooms were very different. When we got back some of our rooms had cookies and macarons while some had none.
Review 100:The room is quite cozy and the staff are always nice. The size of room is very appropriate and in particular, the bed is extra nice.
Review 101:Total for 1 night $US 476 (partial sea view) including all the extra taxes that have been added, plus $20 for parking. I know it's peak season but the prices are excessive even for a good hotel. It's not a luxury hotel! Disappointed!
Review 102:Access to the main Waikiki Beach direct from hotel ; clean modern style bedrooms
Review 103:Despite having a small balcony we had to keep the door closed all the time as we had a battery of A/C units below us humming 24/7 (5th floor didn't make any difference). The 'city view' room had mostly a view of the next hotel's wall. Altogether bearable, but not a great value for money
Review 104:Very good location, clean and reasonably sized room
Review 105:I loved everything about the Modern Honolulu
Review 106:Modern, stylish with great views of the beach. Good size rooms and super comfy beds. I was travelling with a friend and we stayed there on 2 separate occasions during our holiday. The staff were really friendly and on our second time there we got an upgrade. Free wifi and tea and coffee were a bonus.
Review 107:Everyone was polite and helpful. First rate hotel. Well maintained. The Morimoto restaurant (Run by Iron Chef Morimoto) is superb! Highly recommended.
Review 108:The corridors are a a bit dark. The hotel may be due for a re-fresh (painting) soon.
Review 109:Love the fresh scent as I entered the lobby. The rooms are very comfortable and bright. The coffee machine in the room is great. The pool area is sensational, staff very attentive and there is always lounges available. Also like the well-equipped fitness room.
Review 110:We had to leave!
Review 111:The hotel was very chic, but casual. The decor elegant, but simple. The menu limited, but the food was delicious, with 24-hour room service. The hotel was spotless. At the end of Waikiki beach, the location was perfect: a two-minute walk to the beach - just far enough away from the crowds; 10-minute walk to shopping at the amazing Ala Moana Centre; restaurants and pubs of all kinds around you. Nothing was average. Great location for weddings (of which we saw several during our 3-week stay), and a beautiful fashion show for fashion week around the Sunrise Pool, Miss USA Hawaii, and more. The staff were polite, accommodating, efficient, and attentive, and the concierge desk was of great assistance in preparing tours to other islands.
Review 112:No complaints during my stay.
Review 113:My stay with Modern Honolulu was excellent. As soon as you check in you are greeted with a delicious cilantro lemonade. Loved my room, bathroom, and balcony. Every staff member I spoke to or came in contact was warm and gave plenty of suggestions of what to do on the island. Went to the Morimoto restaurant everything on the menu was tasty. The pool and lounge areas are beautiful. I would definitely come back to the Modern Honolulu. Thank you.
Review 114:We loved the staff, you could see that the team work was superb. The pool was fabulous, they even had self serve high quality sun screen. They couldn't do enough for you. The food was excellent, smallish servings but very high quality and they had the best Maitai in town.
Review 115:I can not think of anything that I didn't like!
Review 116:We liked the location of the hotel, and the cleanliness too. Your hotel staff were all great also. We would stay and recommend your hotel to anyone planning on visiting Hawaii!
Review 117:The breakfast was included in two of the three rooms we booked, but thewaitress could not explain which items on the menu were included andwhich not. They charged the automatic gratuity of 20% (for 6 people)although we were three on the first day and five on the second day. Iwas told that they have to charge the 29% irrespective because it wasincluded in our booking.Thereafter it was not charged again.
Review 118:Everything, except the misinformation regarding breakfast
Review 119:I really like this hotel! Really worth the price. The location is perfect, near to Ala moana Shopping centre and Waikiki beach. There is an Abc store cross the street and the hotel provide free wifi. Hotel staffs are very friendly. I will definitely visit again!
Review 120:Location was great, the staff were awesome. Cleanliness of the rooms was spot on. Beautiful decor. The facilities... pool, bars, gym, shop, conference facilities and restaurant. Will definitely be back to stay here again.
Review 121:Small lobby and rooms, a bit of dark in a hotel except for the pool area.
Review 122:Staffs are friendly. Walking distance to Ala moana shopping center. Hotel shop is tiny but the selection of goods are really good:) Pools are gorgeous and not crowded at all:)
Review 123:Just loved The Modern. Room was a great size and beautifully presented. A little off the main beach but easy walk and very close to the shopping centre. Pool area is fantastic and staff go above and beyond!
Review 124:difficult to hear messages and when talking on the phone. No tea or coffee making facility automatic in the room-this had to be requested. And when delivered never enough milk containers. Pricey place to stay!
Review 125:Location was excellent.Staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 126:Breakfast food is little expensive but you get what you pay, good quality.
Review 127:The Modern is beautifully designed, the staff are relaxed and very helpful, the room is fabulous, the pool area is devine. Cookies at turn-down are cute.
Review 128:Small bathroom. No place to put personal bath accessories. Poor shower head. Expensive car parking.
Review 129:Good service. Responsive personnel. Very helpful leisure booking managers! Nice water pool conditions including beds, sun cream, bar.
Review 130:The pool area was nice but - food seriously poor - I complained 3 times - they charge $150 for a day bed - which is hard to spend when the food is trash. also - they siad a couple of meals were on the house but then charged me for them on checkout. says it all. I wont be back
Review 131:Fantastic rooms Great design cool hotel
Review 132:There was nothing to dislike!
Review 133:I liked the attention to detail from the Manager down to the pool attendants that served drinks and handed towels around the pool. The best most organised hotel we stayed in while holidaying in the U.S.A. for 5 weeks.
Review 134:I was put in room next to elevator and assured it stops at 10:00pm. Was not always the case. They also failed to mention it starts back up very early in morning. Bed was also too hard. Did not like having to come downstairs for coffee every am. Almost every hotel I stay in has personal coffee makers.
Review 135:The valet/bell guys were awesome. Enjoyed pool, lounge. Great music. Good place to unwind after working all day.
Review 136:We loved staying in this sophisticated, customer oriented hotel. This is not really a family hotel (which we we thrilled about, since we were not traveling with kids). The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. The location is ok - about a 10-15 minute walk from Waikiki shopping and beaches. The two pools are beautiful (one is adults only, although I didn't see hardly any kids at the hotel, period). Also, the hotel is at the better end of Waikiki for getting to the airport without heavy, stop and go beach traffic.
