Reviews for Castle Mokihana
Review 1:The live music from the restaurant was a bit loud at times. I disliked having performers compete with the glorious sound of the ocean.
Review 2:The location is great: right on the ocean and within walking distance of many places to eat and shop.
Review 3:Room was very run down, refrigerator was rusty and dirty on the inside, sliding glass door was broken, room smelled like mildew. We were so disappointed with the room we had, that we actually moved to another place the next day. I'm usually the "simple, no frills" type, but a campground would've been a cleaner place.
Review 4:Location was great!
Review 5:-Unsafe. We experienced burglary:our luggage was cut with knife, and laptop, camera, wide angle lenses, ipod, passport were stolen. -The reception was not trained to react on such case and has treated the report as nothing happened. -No deposit box - If you still want to stay here I suggest to choose second or third floor ...
Review 6:-Near the beautiful beach and amazing sunrise -Location near supermarket and eating places relatively quiet, peaceful. -We appreciate the GM that came to us the next day to exvpress regrets on our burglary case
Review 7:It is basic, old and worn, so if you're expecting a 5 star resort look elsewhere
Review 8:Great location, pretty much all rooms are ocean front / view, right on the beach, amazing value for money
Review 9:One the second and third nights of our stay, little gnats were in the room, near the light, and getting in our wine glasses. We just covered the glasses and turned off the light. Not a big deal!
Review 10:Absolutely clean, and meticulously kept grounds. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Calm and quiet surroundings.
Review 11:We found roaches in our room and was moved to a third level room with no fan. No compensation other than being offered another room. The stairs were difficult for this 69 year old with bad knees. The roll-away bed was not very comfortable, lumpy.
Review 12:Lower level access to facilities, beach and local stores.
Review 13:Facilities in various states of disrepair, from ripped window screens to rust everywhere. There are no TVs in the room, light bulbs weren't all working, and there are only 2 twin beds in each room (no full, queen or king). Low-quality coffee in room and no sugar or creamer. Overall, this place is severely in need of renovation. There was little good to say about the condition of this hotel except the location and that the grounds were well-maintained and the rooms were cleaned--the staff seem to be doing the best they can with what they have to work with.
Review 14:Location was good and staff were kind. Grounds were well maintained and sound of the ocean at night was appreciated, as was the view of the sunrise in the morning.
Review 15:Facilities in various states of disrepair, from ripped window screens to rust everywhere. Review 16:Location was good (right on the ocean with the sound of the waves crashing--but not a beach for swimming) and staff were friendly.
Review 17:Wifi was very weak, one barbaque with broken handles, but still worked, and tiki torches that didn't work.
Review 18:Next to ocean and the price was awesome. Pool was very nice, a little cold but conserving energy on heating makes sense. Million dollar view.
Review 19:Facilities were in serious need of attention. Door and bathroom sink broken, safety latch on door missing one side, paint peeling, lanai sliding door handle so corroded it wouldn't lock.
Review 20:Location and grounds were perfect.
Review 21:The unit was weather beaten. Lots of rust on doors, kitchen stove, closet door. Most of all rust on lamp shade!?!?. Go figure ? A little cloth to cover it up is all it takes. Other than that , it was quaint .
Review 22:The location was awesome. Beachfront all the way . Bullshed Restaurant was very good.
Review 23:A bare-bones establishment! No hand towels or washcloths, no blow drier or iron (had to ask at desk). No creamers or sugar for the coffee. There were ants on the counter by sink. Bedroom mirror covered in drops of something that was not water. Walls in bathroom had orange stuff on the walls beside and above the mirror and bedroom walls were also not clean. This property is in dire need of a make-over as it is shabby and showing its age.
Review 24:Lots of dining choices nearby. Parking right outside the units.
Review 25:It was so hot in the rooms. A fan would have been nice. There were refrigerators but no way to cook anything. A hot plate or micro wave would have been nice. There were no TV's.
Review 26:I liked the location.
Review 27:Please re think mattress arrangement and room layout
Review 28:Location, property, rustic feel, casual charm, professional staff, clean and efficient, felt like old school Hawaii. Don't fret over no AC. Ocean breeze made the stay.
Review 29:The young ladies at reception seemed to be inconvenienced and moderately irritated by my presence as I dragged them away from the computer. Ellen on the other hand was fabulous and what you'd expect from a staff member at reception.
Review 30:Hearing and seeing the ocean and having the sea breeze blow through the room
Review 31:hotel policy of not feeding the cats and demanding of their guests to follow suit
Review 32:directly at the sea, great view, good starting point for excursions, supermarket in walking distance
Review 33:Needs updating. It was VERY hot when we were there and there was not a fan in the unit. Also would liked to have a microwave and/or cooktop.
Review 34:Great location.
Review 35:Totally outdated and unclean... Staff unfriendly and unwilling to help... No A/C (ok wasn't promoted) but no fan, not even if you wish to pay for it. Told me to buy one if I want one...not likley for 3 nights...
Review 36:Close to the sea and some shops
Review 37:Internet was weak to non-existent in room and lobby. No air conditioning and 2 single beds No full be Do! No TV. No phone.
Review 38:Staff was friendly, nice location, pool and ocean.
Review 39:In summer it was really hard to sleep without aircon, the rooms have fans only (which are really really really noisy). I have also had an issue with the hotel "accidentally" taking out two authorisations for the security deposit (they couldn't even work out how they took it out two different cards - scary). One amount was returned to the credit card as normal but the other is still missing (2 weeks later and no replies from multiple emails so I'm pretty annoyed now) - if you are reading this Castle Mokihana can you please respond to me and return my money?!
Review 40:Overall we were quite happy with our stay, it has a good location so both the sides of the island are quite accessible. If you just need a place to sleep then this is good value for money.
Review 41:There is NO AIR CONDITIONING!! Glad were only needed to stay one night!
Review 42:The location of the property is wonderful-the view from our room was amazing!!
Review 43:The worst thing about it was the water pump was always on and right outside of our room. For the 20 minutes it wasn't on we could hear the ocean and birds from our room which was really nice. The screen door kept falling off and the water faucet in the bathroom was difficult to turn off.
Review 44:The location was great and right on the ocean. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 45:Had a packet of coffee and shampoo, lotion and condition, but on the second day I was told I had to buy the coffee and there was no lotion to replace the one I used the day before.
Review 46:Was able to relax and enjoy the moments
Review 47:The "king" studio had 2 twin day beds that we had to push together...no microwave, no TV, very preoccupied and grumpy desk staff.
Review 48:Location, on the beach in Kapaa- central to all island sights and close to the airport. Kauai sunrise from our lanai!
Review 49:You couldn't exactly swim in the ocean on the beach in front of the hotel.
Review 50:This was the only reasonably priced lodging on the water. Killer grocery store, rec opportunities, and great lounge within walking distance.
Review 51:Wifi just didn't work properly. They say "it works better in common areas" but even there only half the time. You'll have to walk through the open area to find a spot that works.
Review 52:Rooms clean, nice pool.
Review 53:No bad experience. Free WiFi really did not work, we had to go to the lobby to access it. Fridge was adequate, large enough but it needs repair because it does not freeze water in the cold freezer part - it relates to room 210 only). Microwave oven would be nice to have.
Review 54:All mentioned above, nice walking trails along the shore. Lack TV greatly appreciated, not missed at all, did not waste space in the room. Everyday change of towels was great.
Review 55:Internet was not dependable, make sure you got your own.
Review 56:Staff very helpful and friendly, hotel right at the beach. Shopping center within walking distance. Spacious, comfortable rooms with kitchenette. Quiet and serene.
Review 57:Two twin beds shoved together. Odd thing to say, but hurricane water pressure. Oh, and no alcohol by the pool.
Review 58:The courtyard was great. Grills for cooking, a good sized pool. Even not having a tv was quite quaint. There was shuffleboard, corn hole, bocce ball, a pool. Much to do if you're old school. Not to mention the fantastic sunrises, an great moonlit nights.
Review 59:Bad wifi, had to use hotspot. Cleaning was daily for towels but that's all. Every few days they changed sheets. No cooking ability except BBQ.
Review 60:The staff were very friendly and helpful. They cleaned the pool everyday and the landscape is beautiful.
Review 61:The hotel needs some renovation, looks a bit old, but not really an issue. Poor wifi reception.
Review 62:The location is ideal to explore Kauai, although I prefer other islands. The ocean view from the balcony is amazing and the room is spacious. Great value for money.
Review 63:Be aware the rooms are sparse. No tv, no phone and the kitchenette doesn't have a stove or hotplate so you won't be able to cook a meal.Small rooms.
Review 64:Probably the best price in Kauai. Decent location. Nice enough pool and grounds. Ocean view from most rooms.
Review 65:The carpet was a bit dirty. Compare with other resorts around it was the most ugly but I get that you get what you pay
Review 66:It was a nice studio. You have some plates so you can have some breakfast, dinner. The best the sunrise in the morning is so beautiful you should wake up to see it.
Review 67:Booking.com had not got the reservation to the hotel, so don't know what would have happened if the hotel had sold out. That was worrisome on arrival but the clerk was able to correct it and check me in.
Review 68:This hotel was the best deal in the area, well located for the Kapaa area, simple but clean, with helpful staff.
Review 69:Did not have a bad experiences but would suggest a microwave in the room.
Review 70:View was looking out on the ocean so did not miss not having a TV in the room.
Review 71:- unfriendly staff at check-in (didn't let my friend check-in, although he had all the details printed out, so he had to wait 5 hrs somewhere outside) - although it is mentioned that it is possible to check out at 1 pm, they kicked my friend out of the Appartment while I was away buying food, saying we didn't tell them in advance and they need to clean the room. Because I was away with the car my friend had no choice but to wait outside the room with all our luggage, but then noticed nobody actually came to clean and the hotel wasn't fully booked either - very poor wifi
Review 72:- great location directly at the beach - beautiful site und well maintained garden - clean rooms nice view - swimming pool
Review 73:Slow Wi-Fi.
Review 74:Location: right on the shore, most rooms have balconies with direct ocean views, others have partial view. Especially beautiful at sunrise. Stores and fast food restaurants within walking distance.
Review 75:This may not be for everyone. No TV, telephone or microwave. It is dated, but for the price it cannot be beat.
Review 76:The location is as good as it gets with waves pounding the shore and palm trees swaying in the breeze. An occasional crowing of a rooster hardly disturbing the solace. All in all a peaceful place.
Review 77:No bad experience, but, it would have been nice to have a tv in the room. It is a older property need upgrades, the room we had was very clean, but, there was rust in the metal of the walls and around the nails Also had trouble connecting to Wifi.
Review 78:Location, right on the beach, great pool, all stores and restaurants within walking distance, 10 to 15 minutes from airport. Very friendly, helpful staff. The price was very reasonable.
Review 79:Facility is quite tired and needs some work. Staff were not cheerful or welcoming but would provide what was needed when asked.
Review 80:For the experienced, budget conscious traveler, it is the perfect place; comfortable, reasonably clean, great location on the beach with good pool, across from restaurants and shops for groceries. On bus route in Kapaa so you can get the best of Kauai without a car.
Review 81:We got the room right next to the laundry which was rather loud and humid.
Review 82:The location is great! Right next to the ocean with shops and restaurants in walking distance.
Review 83:Poor Wifi After spending $450 at the property, asked Manager if it's ok to get a salt package from the restaurant and he said no.
Review 84:Beautiful property Great Value BBQ Grill Pool Mini kitchen Free Parking
Review 85:The staff is completely clueless. One switch turned on both the fan and all the lights in the place. I asked if there was a way to turn the lights off and leave on the fan. The front desk didn't know, so sent security, which suggested a hang a towel over the lights until he realized that was dangerous. The units are tiny and cheaply decorated. Mine had two tiny beds, one which was partially under a shelf (how am I supposed to sleep on that?) and the other which was "decorated" as a couch (yeah, it's as weird as it sounds). Most of the people staying there at the same time as me were drinking alcohol outside in paper bags. I'm not kidding. For the same price, you can stay somewhere much nicer, albeit not on the ocean (notably, there wasn't a beach here). This may be the worst place I have stayed ever. I don't say such things lightly.
Review 86:It's close to the ocean. The rooms are inexpensive. The shower has good water pressure.
Review 87:If you want to be treated like criminals stay here !The staff was veryrude from the start. Even Though the room was ready when we arrived, they made us wait till 3:00 pm to check in. We stayed for 11 days. 6days out of 11 days, we didn't have internet connection and the restwas very unstable. The management and the staff didn't show anyconcern to fix it. After our 7th day staying there, the staff forced usto change our room. When we refuse to go through the hassle of packingand unpacking during our very busy time for our business, the manager"Larry " threaten us to call the police, verbally and they puta note on our door. Since we didn't want to lower ourselves to theirlevel, we agreed to change our room. They placed us in a mostlypool/apartment view , partial ocean view, even though we had paidfor a beach front room ! One of our worst hotel experiences during our40 years traveling around the world !
Review 88:View
Review 89:Don't book at this place if you need wi-fi. It was kot working most of the time. No AC No TV
Review 90:Located in Kapa'a, closed to groceries and restaurants. Low price
Review 91:not a criticism, it is a comfortable older vacation destination. Would be nice to have a microwave and tv.
Review 92:great views of the ocean and pool. Friendly staff, easy drive from airport, lots of parking, shopping nearby for food and pharmacy
Review 93:Rooms were very Spartan. TV was removed.
Review 94:This is one of the lowest priced hotels near Lihue. We had a 'studio' that had 2 twins. Room was pretty Spartan, but ok for one night. Nice setting right on the ocean.
Review 95:i booked a room with sea view, but they could offer only with garden view, but as they said it has higher category. Yes it is, but i want exactly what i booked. Wi-fi didn't work all the time. Staff couldn't help and didn't try at all.
Review 96:location, big room
Review 97:The word "castle" is nowhere on the building. The directions listed the address on kuhio hwy. You need to say right turn on Komoa rd. A little scary arriving at midnight...people loitering in nearby parking lot.
Review 98:The place was on the ocean and was what I expected.
Review 99:No TV and no wifi. There was always an excuse about the wifi and someone was always checking on it. If you need to be in constant contact, you'd be miserable here. If you want to be away from it all this is perfect.
Review 100:Great place to catch up on reading. If you want complete get away it's here. Location was great near shops and restaurants and plenty of beach chairs. The restaurants Bobby V's and just steps away and should NOT be missed.
Review 101:Rooms are a bit shabby No microwave or other cooking utensils yet dishes and small fridge - strange Bathroom needs updating
Review 102:Location very good and right on the beach Customer service very good
Review 103:Beds a bit soft. Room configuration a bit weird but overall had a nice stay.
Review 104:Loved being able to walk out of my room and onto the beach. Simple but comfy rooms. Great value for money.
Review 105:(Free) WiFi was too weak to be useful
Review 106:Castle Mokihana is in an excellent location on the island, being about halfway up the island top to bottom, making it a great launching spot for your daily adventure, 200 metres off the main highway of Kauai, so no noise and overlooking surf. Also the shop Boss Frog is walking distance, for all your sports gear (surf boards, snorkellling equipment, bikes), and Kapaa shops are a minute's drive.
Review 107:- internet is really slow
Review 108:- every room has great ocean rooms - big rooms, a bit worn but very clean and comfortable - nice staff - own BBQ on the beach for everyone to use, great!!
Review 109:The twin beds layout was strange with the head of one bed resting under a corner shelf. The furnishing were dated.
Review 110:Our corner room was yards from the sea giving excellent sightlines. The sound of the sea was heard all night- a positive. Roosters were crowing from 0430 on.
Review 111:Place feels like it is in need of some serious tlc. Also doesn'tfeel very safe, particularly after we got warned as we arrived to neverleave anything in our car.Wifi wasn't working for two whole days andthen was very unreliable when working.
Review 112:The sound of the sea at night
Review 113:It is NOT self catering accomodation. There are remains of a kitchen in the room but no stove or kitchenware. Dishes and cutlery were very dirty. Everything is extremely outdated. Wifi is the worst ever. Manager is not at all customer orientated. Backdoor cannot be locked.
Review 114:Location next to the sea.
Review 115:Sure, this hotel is a bit out-dated in its decor, fixtures, etc., but it is clean and the location is unmatched. I defy you to find a property that puts you closer to the ocean! We woke up to the sound of waves crashing just outside our door. The staff is friendly and welcoming and this will be our hotel of choice each time we return. You simply cannot do better for the money.
Review 116:It's not that we didn't like it's more about opinions to help. We would add a microwave in the room, it can be very usefull and also increase the power of the wifi, specially for those rooms next to the oceab. However, these are just opinions because we totally love this place. And no, they don't pay us to say that :)
Review 117:We are a young catalan couple and we were looking for relax, beach, pool and silence. Sleeping listening the sound of the ocean was a wonderful experience, the bbq the pool the location, just perfect. If we ever come back to kauai we will repeat for sure and ask for the same room 324 a lovely experience
Review 118:Poor WiFi.
Review 119:Located next to the ocean (not a beach). The staff is friendly, rooms are clean. "Hawaiian alarm clock" will wake you up at 7 something.
Review 120:WIFI is AWFUL. Facilities need MUCH repair/update (some of the lights were rusted from salt air). Saw a couple roaches, though they are trying to take care of problem with treatment. No TV. No A/C. Most rooms have no fan. While on ocean, nearby beach isn't wonderful. While cheap, do yourself a favor and spend extra money to stay somewhere nice.
Review 121:Good location and cheap. It's in Kapaa not far away from a Foodlands and a couple of other restaurants. It's right on the ocean and you can listen to the sound of the ocean when sleeping. Staff were friendly.
Review 122:Nothing really.
Review 123:We loved everything that Kauai had to offer. Affordable room(s) to rental car to doing all that Kauai had to offer. Id do it all over again.
Review 124:For the money we paid, one couldn't expect more.
Review 125:location
Review 126:BBQ facility could have been in better condition
Review 127:The tub drain was slow to drain. The unit had a vintage vibe to it.
Review 128:The proximity to the ocean was amazing for distant whale-watching opportunities.
Review 129:Wifi isn't in all the rooms only the common areas.
Review 130:Great spot with an uninterupted view of the ocean. We liked it more than the sherton!
Review 131:Gas bbq, ocean view
Review 132:We would have preferred double beds to the single ones!
Review 133:Liked the grounds - the pool with the shallow area for kids.
Review 134:No cooking facilities.
Review 135:Price
Review 136:No decent internet
Review 137:Great location!
Review 138:Old hotel, old bathroom. But clean.
Review 139:Location. Very nice view from balcony directly to the see.
Review 140:Wifi lets the place down, which is a shame.
Review 141:Great location, friendly staff, plenty of space for a variety of activities, on the beach!!! Security.
Review 142:Good position! Breakfast not included, but amazing place for saw sunrise :-)))
Review 143:The bed was very uncomfortable, small bed and very soft pillow,no TV in the room
Review 144:Location
Review 145:Accused of something we did not do. Later told your hotel was in error.
Review 146:A nice view from the room
