Reviews for Higher Ground Hotel
Review 1:Seemed more like an institution than a boutique hotel. Felt like we had stepped back in time. Breakfast was average.
Review 2:Did like being located in a residential area for was quiet and pleasant. Owners were quite nice.
Review 3:We especially liked the location. We could see the Truman home right from our window and we were within walking distance of the Truman Presidential Library/Museum. Very clean and breakfast was good.
Review 4:There's always something that could be changed but it's really not worth mentioning. We had a wonderful time so why ruin a perfect review. So my answer is change nothing!!
Review 5:I liked that Higher Ground was not a traditional hotel. This hotel took me back a few decades in the tasteful decor, and being that the hotel only has 30 rooms available. It's extremely quiet, and kept immaculately clean. The location is in the downtown area away from all the hustle and bustle of the newer city. It was the perfect area to get away for a couple days and get some much needed rest and relaxation from the everyday stressors of life.
Review 6:This is only because we are getting older but we didn't like the tiny stool or the close quarters where the stool was located, but I am sure that can be fixed by using another room.
Review 7:Your facility is close to our daughter & family. We appreciate your kindness concerning allowing our daughter have breakfast with us. We were working on a church meal & that was our only "down" time to catch up a bit.
Review 8:A very nice small hotel, off the beaten path, so was quiet and provided a relaxing stay. Perfect location for seeing the Independence area for sure, and not far from Kansas City. Enjoyed the breakfast, the beautiful garden and the lounge areas too. It felt a lot like home.
Review 9:Probably the cleanest hotel room we've ever stayed in and that includes 4 and 5 star hotels. Very quiet place in a charming neighborhood and across the street from Harry and Bess Truman's home. Wonderful staff.
Review 10:N/A
Review 11:First time booking with Higher Ground so i wasnt sure what to expect. Upon arrival i thought my GPS lead me to the wrong place! Looked like an office building from the facade. Inside we found an inviting hotel that seemed to be more of a home than a hotel. Place was very nice and clean, the owners made sure u felt at home while staying there. Very friendly and helpful staff. I definitely would stay again, next KC trip for sure!
Review 12:Furnishings in the room a little sparse.
Review 13:Excellent location - across the street from Pres. truman's home and easily walkable to downtown Independence. Wonderful patio/garden for coffee, afternoon cocktail/snack, just relax.
Review 14:Only window was a huge skylight. One bed was lumpy and uncomfortable. The other bed was noisy. We reserved a king room and got two queens. Not a huge problem, but not what we asked for.
Review 15:Staff was friendly to us. Room was clean and nice sized.
Review 16:We were very pleased with our stay at Higher Ground! The breakfast was great; however, we wished there were a selection for person(s) who do not eat pork.
Review 17:The room was very clean; the bed was very comfortable and when we needed assistance from staff, we were treated very nice!
Review 18:There was nothing that we didn't like about the hotel.
Review 19:The location was excellent for the activities we had planned. The rooms are very clean, the grounds were clean and maintained. Bed was very comfortable. Very close to the square, where there are several of eating establishments to choose from.
Review 20:there wasn't anything we didn't like
Review 21:We liked everything, nice sitting areas and books & magazines. Easy to get in and out. Close to everthing we were interested. the hosts were great.
Review 22:I wish the bed would have been a little more comfortable.
Review 23:This is a great place! Friendly owners. The place was very clean. The garden was nice. Breakfast was good. This is in a good location. Right across from the Truman Home and next to the Noland Home.
Review 24:Probably a little firmer bed. Also, we had requested 1st floor, but were given 3rd floor. 2nd floor would have been better. We also thought $100 - 110/night was a little high.
Review 25:The quiet location, beautiful garden and friendly staff.
Review 26:Door closures on room were very tight. Took longer than normal to close.
Review 27:Front desk check in was very easy and super nice lady. Room was very large and clean. Couldn't really decide what the color was. Stay there and judge for yourself.
Review 28:The Higher Ground Hotel is clean, welcoming, and very nicely appointed. There is an inviting main common room on each floor, an enclosed garden for relaxing, and I loved the huge skylight in my room! Their breakfast was made by the boss himself on the morning of my stay (scrambled eggs and sausage!). This hotel is located in the Historic District and is within walking distance of all the interesting sites to see.
Review 29:a lot of dust had accumulated on the ceiling fan in the bathroom.
Review 30:The cleanliness of the sheets and the staff was great. Even in winter the garden was beautiful.
Review 31:Comfortable beds, great bathroom, nice comfortable chairs to sit in (2 upholstered, just like home. On site owners wonderful. Lovely outside patio with tables, chairs, running brook, landscaped with flowers and trees. Great location to Truman Library and downtown.
Review 32:It was good the only thing was we have 2 little kids so the room is more for just adults but the kids still enjoyed the stay
Review 33:Location and the hotel is clean and the staff is pleasant!
Review 34:because we booked last minute we were only able to get smallest room in the facility and it was too small with no windows and felt like i was in a closet. In talking with the desk clerk when we checked out she asked about our stay and i mentioned the room size and she gave us a key to go and view another room which was so nice and big and lots of window.
Review 35:felt very much like being in a home
Review 36:That there wasn't an iron/ironing board in the room. This was a disappointment to me. My clothes were folded in a suitcase for hours and i knew I'd be able to iron them in the hotel. I felt it was a disservice for me to have to go to the desk and ask for an ironing board then carry it back to my room. Thumbs down in this aspect of the hotel.
Review 37:It was quiet. The bed was comfortable.
Review 38:We had a rather small room but come to find out it was the smallest room they have and after touring some of the other rooms we will request room with window next time.
Review 39:i really liked the tranquil feeling you have from the moment you walk in. the gardens are beautiful and relaxing. Breakfast was very good and plenty of choices. I can't wait to go back again and just unwind with a good book and a massage.
Review 40:Nothing
Review 41:The rooms are very "homey" and comforting, making you feel as if you weren't staying in a hotel at all. I really liked the complimentary Keurig coffee cups/maker in the rooms, which made it very simple to get your morning cup of joe and get moving for sight seeing. Also, the location has a lot of historical value with great food locations within walking distance.
Review 42:The bed could have been a little more comfortable, but it wasn't terrible. Also, watch out for staining the comforter and towels. We didn't have an issue with this, but some people might.
Review 43:This location is clean and I really liked the layout of the room. The bathroom sink is outside the bathroom, making it easy for two people to get ready at once. I also just liked the general feel of the hotel. The free wi-fi and parking is nice, and the complimentary breakfast is better than most places I've stayed at before. The free Keurig coffee in the room is also nice. The location is absolutely perfect for visiting KC. You can hop onto Truman right next to the hotel and go all the way into the city in roughly 20 minutes without much hassle.
Review 44:I would have preferred a variety of tv news stations to watch at breakfast time, perhaps rotating them (one day CNN, then CNBC, then Fox, then a local station).
Review 45:A very comfortable room, beautiful garden, friendly owners.
Review 46:No fridge, not very many options for breakfast
Review 47:The room was homey and comfortable, didn't have the hotel feel, more like a b&b. Quiet place to stay
Review 48:Very Quiet. Area was safe and secure. We walked downtown for dinner, about 5 blocks. Next door to 2 National homes. Trumanns home , his aunts home. ^ Blocks fro Trumanns library.
Review 49:breakfast so-so but adequate.
Review 50:Felt like a B&B. Homey, friendly. great furnishings. desk person very helpful. They told us the building was an old run down office that they refurbished.
Review 51:Nothing to do with small kids, but a good value for a comfortable bed
Review 52:The beds were very comfortable, it was extremely clean, and the breakfast was good
Review 53:We didn't have time to stay longer on that first visit! Next time we will allow for more time to enjoy the hotel and historical area longer!
Review 54:Higher Ground Hotel was wonderful! We loved our beautiful, quiet, comfortable room. Our bed had lovely linens and our room had a view of the patio garden. The hotel was very clean, nicely decorated & appeared new or redecorated in many respects! The location was near many of our desired historical tourist attractions. The Owners provided a large continental breakfast & were very accommodating! We definitely will stay at Higher Ground again!
Review 55:Everything about Higher Ground was excellent. Peaceful atmosphere, beautiful garden & rooms. The staff was very attentive & informative. Am looking forward to lodging there again in the future.

Review 62:Great location. Unique and charming hotel.

Review 82:Loved that the facility was located within walking distance of Historic Truman Square.
Review 83:A little off the beaten path but not too bad.
Review 84:Was obviously a school in a previous life. Clean and in good repair. Staff were pleasant.
Review 85:Wifi was a bit slow.
Review 86:Right across the street from Truman home. Very clean older building. Great room and bed. Friendly hosts.
Review 87:Such a wonderful place to stay. Location was excellent. We got a sky light room.
Review 88:It was convent to both Kaufman &Arrowhead stadiums.
Review 89:loved the garden, peaceful, resting
Review 90:My wife and I both liked the quietness of the hotel and also the way the hotel was decorated
Review 91:Uniqueness, quiet
Review 92:Very secluded area. We had to drive to get to shopping areas and restaurants.
Review 93:The staff was vet nice and rooms were clean.
Review 94:location. It's about 1 miles walk from both. The Truman library and the Metro transit. No supermarket nearby though.
Review 95:Homelike feel. It felt like part hotel and part B&B.
Review 96:Hotel was clean and comfortable. A great value for the money.
Review 97:Nothing.
Review 98:Everything.
Review 99:Bed was very uncomfortable
Review 100:Wonderful location and staff
Review 101:No pool
Review 102:Very clean. Quiet. Comfortable. The historical sights around the hotel.
Review 103:Immaculate room, great location!
Review 104:Bathroom setup.
Review 105:Nice little hotel for the price, good location.
Review 106:interior looks like a dormitory
Review 107:clean, across from Truman House, near downtown
Review 108:Everything
Review 109:Don't expect much with breakfast.
Review 110:location, staff, breakfast, flower garden, security system
Review 111:Sort of reminded me of my college dormitory back in the eighties. Concrete block walls, etc. Nothing too fancy, but comfortable.
Review 112:Staff was very friendly and helpful. Beautiful garden. Very quiet and peaceful.
Review 113:The only reason I booked the room because Ur site said it had a pool, there was no pool. My stay was very undesirable, I would not stay there again or use Ur site again!!!
Review 114:The room was big.
Review 115:I had to get up early the next morning to drive 600 miles to Denver. Just as a fell asleep, a family came back to the two rooms next to me. Evidently the kids (just being kids mind you) hadn't stayed in a hotel like this before because they kept running down the hall from room to room giggling and screaming and knocking on each door over and over, doors opening and closing repeatedly, etc. Finally, I decided enough and tried to call downstairs to the desk but, being a wannabe bed and breakfast, there was no one there late at night. Finally, after getting up and watching for her, I let the mom know I wasn’t happy. In her defense, she immediately quieted everyone down and I drifted off to sleep. My problem, in particular, is that contrary to what the website showed, it wasn’t ever close to being sold out (I don’t think) and I checked in early (2:00 pm) so the desk clerk, knowing full well that I was a single traveler, should not have put me next to a family with children, and next to the stairway door. I travel extensively and have never had this problem before.
Review 116:Very picturesque location, across from Harry Truman's home. Unfortunately, Independence as a town leaves much to be desired. I would have much rather stayed 15 miles west in KC, MO. It's important for users to map out the location before booking: don’t take the website’s word as gospel on proximity to anything. I just repeated the same mistake here in Denver as I booked a nice hotel, which I thought was close to the city only to find it is 20 miles from all the action downtown! Anyway, the place is extremely comfortable and meticulously clean. It's very "homey" with nice reading areas, etc. If you're traveling to see the Truman offerings, this is an excellent place to stay; especially for families. I would definitely not recommend it for business travelers, however.
Review 117:Location, location, location!! Seemed to be located on the wrong side of town. It made the wife and kids nervous just to stay there. My three year old got so upset that she got sick and we had to leave, cutting our two day stay to one. The hotel refused to refund our money for the second night even though they had enough time to rent it again. The hotel should also be more up front about the actual building, it used to be an office and still looks like on inside. The decor was even stranger with wildly colored walls and country/tropical theme. The absolute worst stay of our lives. Booking.com has the hotel listed as three stars it really needs to be one!!
Review 118:Nothing!!!
Review 119:The room was very clean and comfortable, the people there were all great and the hotel itself was very pretty with the garden patio and it was also very quiet. We will definitely be back and spread the word on this wonderful place!
Review 120:Breakfast was just ok, no complaints.
Review 121:Nice garden to relax in after a full day. Great location for Truman library and downtown Independence visit. Just a short drive to downtown KC. Front desk staff was as good and helpful as you can find. Loved having community fridge, it helped with veggies from city mkt.
