Reviews for Waikiki Beachside Hostel
Review 1:Not comfortable at all. Not worth the money. They give you sheets but the bed is dirty. You're supposed to wrap a dirty bed with "clean" sheets. Disgusting. You're also supposed to wrap a dirty pillow with a clean pillow case. The room is not airconditioned. They don't enforce their own rules which means you don't know which beds are occupied.
Review 2:Didn't like anything about the place.
Review 3:Very noisy.Guess cant expect hostels to be quiet. There were ppl shouting loud upto late night and we were woken up by some strikes happening outside.
Review 4:The hostel was located very close to downtown and the rooms were neat and clean.
Review 5:Front desk was always very busy and understaffed - seemingly always a crowd at the from desk waiting for information or checking in or out. Noisy from street - garbage trucks at 5am on all sides of building, then cars. The rooms aren't "noise" proof. Also - very light - once the sun comes up it's in the room. The air con doesn't work very well - the shared rooms have 2 dorm-style bedrooms in each suite - one of the bedrooms in the suite has aircon and the other doesn't - the without room is very hot - even in winter. One guy came in really late, then coughed and coughed for hours - I've stayed in hostels all over the world and never had that happen before - sick people shouldn't be allowed to stay in a dorm.
Review 6:Facilities were good - large rooms with space for bags and gear - space under the beds as well as large lockers for suitcases (for a small fee). Staff very nice, especially given the busy understaffed conditions. Fantastic location. Big fridge in room. If only they could make the rooms darker (for sleeping) and quieter from the street noise - note to self: next time take ear plugs and blinders for eyes.
Review 7:The noisy lot who came in drunk at 1am and did not shut up till 2 am on Monday or Tuesday morning [I cannot recall exactly] Actually what I did not like is no one from the hostel told them to shut up. I would have paid for a decent espresso.
Review 8:The location was great, just off the main drag but easy walking to almost everything. The beds we had were very comfortable.
Review 9:Lot of homeless people hanging around, but that's what Waikiki is like. Was a little grossed out to find 3 bottles of lice shampoo someone left behind in the kitchen, and then discovered a large cockroach the next day. Larger rooms of people don't seem to be as clean. Preferred 4 person room over 8 person room.
Review 10:By the beach. Free breakfast in the morning.
Review 11:Room was cramped. No bed allocated with sheets given at reception. On my last night with an early start the next day there were people checking into the room and noisily making their beds, one above mine, late at night.
Review 12:Location.
Review 13:The place s very nice, full of young people, you can meet a lit of friends. The personal is great, really nice and honest people. The breakfast is cool, a lot of toasts with butter jam and peanut butter! One street from Waikiki beach, Manny ABC stores near and buses too. Great place!
Review 14:The 4 person hostel room is just 2 extra beds in the kitchen/living room area outside of a private 2 person room. It was fine just a little strange.
Review 15:Location is good. Easy to reach from airport and walking distance to beach.
Review 16:It's little noisy due to passing traffic at night. This might hamper your sleep if you have a roadside room.
Review 17:Its location. The rooms and the bathrooms are clean. Friendly and nice staff.
Review 18:The Large dorm...... it has duble deck bed which is TOO SHAKY. I couldn't sleep because every single move of either mine or the others makes me feel shaky.
Review 19:I stayed for total 4 days ; 2 days for small dorm(for 4) and 2 days for large dorm which is for 8. It was good to meet other people and clean compared to the price. In fact smaller one was perfect to stay because it has 4 single beds.
Review 20:In my room on 3rd floor, there was no wi-fi signal or sometimes too weak to use Internet...that's why I had to go to dining to use wi-fi there, even it was midnight, earlier morning...
Review 21:People were nice and friendly. Staffs were very helpful, even my English was not good, they figured out what I need. No bed bug.
Review 22:Lockers in the room should have been free of charge. Also luggage storage after check-out costs $5. No air conditioning. If you meet good roommates, it would be great fun. However, that chance is pretty low. I had annoying roommates, so it wasn't good at all.
Review 23:Good value for money in Hawaii.
Review 24:No Smoking, and Plenty of Drinking and Healthy Sexual Activity. A Premier SCUBA Company {Honolulu Scuba Company} has a Free Shuttle to take you SCUBA Dive Every Morning!
Review 25:The staffs are really helpful:) The location is super! Just 2min to waikiki beach. The guests that I met wre really nice:) I had good time, thank you a lot!
Review 26:the rooms were cleaned every day, but it seemed they were always a bit dirty
Review 27:about a 1min walk to waikiki beach, great and helpful stuff, free toast with peanut butter or jam for breakfast, balconies in rooms
Review 28:Really soft beds. My back hurt. The staff did not suggest that I look at different rooms.
Review 29:The location. Friendly people. Cheap food right next door. 1.5 blocks to the beach. Bus accessibility.
Review 30:I just wish I was able to stay longer...
Review 31:Super social and great environment. I will always come back to this hostel for sure! Free breakfast in the morning- toast (peanut butter, jelly, butter, tea and coffee) not a huge option but sure is free! Snorkeling gear is available for free and washers and dryers available, as well. Literally 2 blocks from the Waikiki beach, perfect location! Seriously the best deal for your dollar. And maintenance comes in a cleans the room daily.
Review 32:Not a comfortable place to stay. No privacy, rooms are small, one bathroom for 8 (impossible to maintain it clean), and do not provide warm blankets.. But worst of all: do not provide towels in one of the most expensive locations in the island (you have to purchase one that will cost roughly 1/3 of the room's price for 1 night)
Review 33:The other travelers that stay there. Most are good people, down to earth, and with real interesting life experiences that they are willing to share with you.
Review 34:The eight dorm rooms are very crowd, stuffy, not much flow of air. The bathroom is small and a lot of people to share it
Review 35:I liked the 4 bed dorms spaciousness, enough windows to allow breeze (I had a corner room), and room enough in the bathroom. Also very close to beach.
Review 36:Unfortunately only one of the stovetops worked and there was no plugs for the sink but apart from this very minor problem it was great.
Review 37:Staff were very friendly and helpful, the location of the hostel couldn't be better considering its located a block from the beach as well as a block from the main street.
Review 38:Lighting in the bathroom was poor, no exhaust fan other than a small external window that was not removing the damp air. Security/safety issue with the Broken lock on the back sliding glass door to the external patio/balcony, staff stated it was second floor therefore safe when they looked at it.
Review 39:The location was a stones throw from Waikiki beach and all the required shops and bars for an awesome stay. Air-conditioning (some rooms). kitchen facilities and fridge. Actually comfortable bunk beds. Medium sized In-room pay as you use lockers. Comfortable single bunk beds. Staff were amazingly helpful in all possible ways 24/7. Overall recommended, as the best hostel to stay at Waikiki.
Review 40:This is definitely a party hostel. For you're wanting a quiet and relaxing accommodation, this is not for you. Also the AC in some rooms aren't very effective, so that could be an issue if it's very hot.
Review 41:Location was its best quality
Review 42:They have a detailful tutorial about local atores and buses for the visitors. The kitchen beside the hostel was great too, delicious burgers and shrimp curry.
Review 43:The only thins negative was a girl in the reception that at any Question reply with no isn't possible I had she asked for booking a shuttle for airport and she replied no isn't possible just for one alone . I had she asked; could you try to call them and ask directly to them if they can pick up just one man ? She replied no , for my experiences they doesn't do it. And she sed you mast to take a taxi for 40 dollars. I asked to print a bording pass and she replied ; no ! It must to be in PDF (for shure it was) . All this happens in the afternoon of my last day there Fri 16/10 say no isn't good
Review 44:All were nice, I have not been there to much , just 4 days
Review 45:Sometimes veeeery loud nights. Couldnt sleep and loud talk down. In some badroom not clean.
Review 46:Nice people in reception, nice staff. Met some great guys. People from all world there. Good fun and breakfest always ready. Awesome location. 3 minuts from sea.
Review 47:I liked everything.
Review 48:It is not a hostel but a hotel. I liked everything: amazing staff, excellent location, very clean and of course cheap for a place in waikiki. Miss everything about this place.
Review 49:Beds Not very comfy. Rooms extremly hot unless you sleep Und er the AC which is too Cold :)
Review 50:Kind of a perfect hostel Location in waikiki! Personal very friendly and helpful!
Review 51:No a/c so it's been very difficult to sleep as it was very hot and humid. In my room there was just a fan. Rooms need curtains! Not everybody likes to wake up at 6am with the sunrise.
Review 52:Perfect location less than 2 mns from Waikiki Beach. Staff was nice and helpful and let me use the phone for free to book tours and transfers. Breakfast was basic but ok. You can't expect more for the price you pay.
Review 53:Got to carry my big luggage to 3rd floor as they didnt let me put it in storage ($5/day) even though I asked. Noisy at night.
Review 54:Great location. Clean room. Generally friendly staff
Review 55:Although I never once felt unsafe, there are a few shady people thathang around after dark, mostly to just bum cigarettes or hit ongirls. At least they secure the common area at night which providesextra security.
Review 56:The staff was amazing! I just moved here from the mainland and they wereso helpful. They told me where to get a bus pass, where to find thelibrary, and they kept my most valuable items in storage or me. As faras hostels go, this is probably the best value considering you get freepb&j, no curfew, and you aren't required to provide a returnticket to stay.
Review 57:NEED AIRCON IN THE ROOMS. FANS DON'T WORK.
Review 58:GREAT TO MEET NEW TRAVELLERS AT A HOSTEL. NICE AND CENTRAL. RIGHT NEXT TO AN ABC STORE. STAFF WERE VERY ACCOMMODATING.
Review 59:The AC was hardly working in our room (402A) so I often had difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep without waking up because of the heat.
Review 60:Staff, cleaning people, kitchen equipments, location of the hostel, the lounge area.
Review 61:not very clean, too full of people, breakfast is very poor. 40$ for a bed is too expensive in my opinion
Review 62:Perfect position, very close to the beach and bus stop
Review 63:I can take 2 minutes walk to get to the beach. Staffs are very nice and always willing to help guest. I'll stay there again if I go back to Honolulu.
Review 64:Our room was so noisy, because of something that happening everyday in the street just in front of the building (some activity of loading and unloading truck). That began in the early morning. The breakfast had a very restricted time range, from 9 am to 10 am.
Review 65:The staff is really nice, especially Davis, who gave us many good advices with sympathy and patience. The location of the hostel is really good, near to the beach, to many commercial sites and to bus stops.
Review 66:All good
Review 67:Great service. Friendly. Shuttle arranged by staff ($13) to airport was far better than the $40 for taxi!! (Ask them to book that for you.) Provided secure baggage storage. Close to beach, etc. Will use again.
Review 68:The 4-bed dorm, advertised as air-conditioned was NOT due to the division of the room to create a semi-private room (with 2 beds getting all of the AC). The remaining 2 beds get NO air-conditioning making for a hot sultry stay. To get AC I had to pay for the semi-private (paying for 2 beds & only available 1 night of my stay).
Review 69:Desk staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 70:Minimum breakfast, immature drunken kids paying no respect to the others in the room, no curtain means too bright in the room
Review 71:Great location, great wifi
Review 72:a party place & not clean or maintenance kept up on throughout the property...extremely hot rooms with no fans.
Review 73:friendly staff, middle of the hub...
Review 74:The rooms were not air conditioned and got very hot at night. Windows are always open, and other guests can be loud. For about the same price, my friends were staying at a much nicer hostel down the road.
Review 75:Awesome, friendly staff. Nice downstairs patio area. Key bracelet was handy. Good wifi and great location.
Review 76:The bed sheets didn't smell the greatest and we spotted one little mouse poop our last night there.
Review 77:I really didn't know what to expect staying at a Hostel and was a bit nervous about sharing rooms with a total stranger for so many nights. However the staff was extremely friendly, gave great suggestions, and were very accommodating about changing my room type so I could room with my friends who'd booked a room prior to me. The bathroom was actually pretty clean and the best part was the location- amazing! Walking distance to so many places and less than a block from the beach.
Review 78:Location is fantastic (walking distance to beach, restaurants, zoo, ABC mart right next to hostel), early check in was offered which was great. Came at a busy time so lots of fun and interesting people from all parts of the world, common area was busy during the afternoon/evening. Stayed in a 4 bed dorm which is the quieter option, and a friend stayed in an 8 bed which was very sociable. Breakfast in the morning was appreciated, bathroom was tidy, they also supplied free floats for the beach which was fun. WIFI was excellent. Will definitely come back!
Review 79:Not much to complain about. Only negative thing i can recall is that the part of the room i was staying in had no blinds or curtains so i was woken up fairly early every morning by the sun.
Review 80:The staff was laid back and friendly and everyone i met that was staying here, including my roomies, were really open and trustworthy!
Review 81:Nothing really
Review 82:4 bedrooms are actually 2 beds in one room with semi-detached private room, so good for privacy with still the hostel atmosphere. The wifi was really good had no issue whatsoever The key bracelet is pretty handy too when going swimming. Of course location was perfect
Review 83:The only thing that sucked was having to carry your bag up to the top level!
Review 84:Great hostel. Good vibe. Cleaned well every day. Staff are helpful. Breakfast is all you need. Great location!
Review 85:Towel is $3 although this prob keeps room cost down, and u get to keep it
Review 86:Very close...less than 1 block to waikiki beach and kind staff. Also, multiple shuttle pickups and drop offs at this hostel to/from airport
Review 87:Have to pay for my suitcase for the last day but its fine, just 5 dollars. I suggest it's free for customers for the last day even they check out. Just one day. let customer feel all is good.
Review 88:Amazing location and met amazing friends in this hostel, staff is very helpful to pick up my heavy suitcase too.
Review 89:No refrig, phone, internet, charge of $3 for towel, noise, lack of elevator pb & j for breakfast
Review 90:decent location, bathroom in bedroom, mini cafe with good prices where internet cafe used to be
Review 91:I had no bad experience here. Breakfast is toast peanut butter and a variety of jams. Maybe some breakfast cereals would be a nice addition.
Review 92:I liked the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff! They were very accommodating. The laundry machines worked well all the times I used them. The housekeepers were friendly and cleaned our room everyday. The beds were comfy and it was awesome to have your own kitchen and bathroom in your room. I think if anyone complains about this place they're being a bit picky. I usually only stay in hotels and for a hostel this one was great! In reviews I read that it's noisy...i expected it to be noisier while I was trying to sleep but it wasn't. The common area is below the dorms and of course sound travels but it quiets down at a decent hour and then it's good. Unless your bedtime is 8pm then it's all good.I'd stay again for sure :)
Review 93:Bathroom was eh, comfort of bed
Review 94:Size of room, by the beach, Tikis next door, ABC store next door, lockers for a quarter, by bus stop, clean sheets, friendly staff, free WiFi, cheap shuttle to airport, convenient "key" bracelet, rate, single beds not bunks, kitchens in rooms
Review 95:You need to pay each time 0,25 USD when you are opening/closing your locker in the room! They store your luggage after checkout only if you pay an other 5 USD! Thats completely stupid and impertinent.
Review 96:Location
Review 97:Room was very dark and had unusual smell ...almost a Damp smell
Review 98:Perfect location for shopping what we didn't realise was how good the beach was if we went in opposite direction Large units
Review 99:I found sometimes that the wifi was hit and miss in my room (located on the top floor) but was perfect in the lounge area and surrounding area.
Review 100:This place is ideal for staying in Waikiki. A 2 minute stroll to the beach, zoo and shops. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I had arrived late in the night after 17 hours of travel and was greeted with a cold tasty beer( just what you need). It had a great atmosphere and had everything I needed.
Review 101:The management could do much more with very simple moves. Check the room before you accept it: some of them are very VERY poor compared to others for the same price!!!
Review 102:Position and nice people at reception.
Review 103:I loved this place so much, i was in an 8 bed dorm and everyone got on so well/I made friends pretty much instantly! The whole place mingled well too due to the social area below. I felt like part of a family! The staff were wonderful and had all the time in the world for any questions i had. I wish all hostels were this good!
Review 104:It is quite noisy at night with people talking, general noises and it sounds like some big fans or air conditioning units going all night that are really loud - the noise seems to carry up to the rooms. The window shutters don't seem block out the noise too well. Also we stayed in 2 different rooms and both had very leaky shower taps.
Review 105:Great staff- always friendly and willing to help. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. Kitchen and bathrooms are quite nice too. And awesome location! 2 min walk to the beach and shops
Review 106:You get what you pay for! Scary looking bathroom and loud location!
Review 107:The Staff was probably the most friendly and helpful staff I have ever had! And the location is to die for! 1 and a half blocks from the ocean in Waikiki! Wow!
Review 108:Some beds weren't as stable as others. Which made lots of noise. The breakfast is simple. Although having a food in the wall shop next door made great options.
Review 109:The staff are so helpful and friendly, and meeting so many people in the common area due to the massive amount of rooms available. Self contained rooms with kitchens is helpful in saving money by cooking. The artwork on the buildings adds a good vibe to the hostel as well as the reading area.
Review 110:I don't like the fact that I had to pay for keeping my suitcase in the hotel. But I guess it's a secure service so it's worth it. Also the staff in the night shift when I arrived wasn't the kindest staff I've met. Should work a little bit on client treating maybe
Review 111:The staff were very kind giving directions when I wanted to eat Hawaiian food and they even took my suitcase while I was waiting for my shuttle with no extra fee
Review 112:Common area isn't the nicest.
Review 113:Room size was good with a kitchen, shower and balcony for 8. Block from The beach. The room key is a water proof bracelet. Great for so many reasons.
Review 114:Wifi is not very good. It would be a nice addition if they would organize activities.
Review 115:Great way to meet new people! Excellent location, near centre and beach. Nice staff.
Review 116:the breakfast doesn't start till 9AM and its really only toast and coffee ... its not a complaint but luckily they have kitchens in the room!
Review 117:Staff are excellent, helpful and friendly; rooms are clean though well worn; not as noisy as you would expect at a hostel
Review 118:some of the staff are cranky, some were awesome and helpful. beds were not that comfy. ran out of towels....
Review 119:the people who were travelling there, the wifi, the location, the value all in all had an amazing time there.
Review 120:-The hostel is quite old. Need to renew. -The smell from the trash about the hotel in front of the hostel is disgusting.
Review 121:-The hostel is located in a very strategic position, served of all type of transport and close to the best waikiki beaches.
Review 122:Equipment room/kitchen/bathroom but not so important, in Hawaii we don't spend so much time in the room. Very simple breakfast. Peanut butter, bread and coffee that's it.
Review 123:Great location! Friendly staff Good price Great for single travelers/easy to meet people.
Review 124:Many hostels rent towels and this one did not; however they sold me a towel for a modest price.
Review 125:Room size Bathroom in 4 bed unit Beds nicely spaced- 4 beds in two rooms
Review 126:It's nothing like the picture shows, NO kitchen facilities in rooms, first two beds were stained with urine & blood. The only casual seating & Wifi is in open garage. Broken patio door in bedroom so not secure, police were taking statements from staff when I arrived. Breakfast is just peanut butter & jam toast.
Review 127:Staff and location were good.
Review 128:It is too noisy and they should have more lockers in the rooms! and without paying! the room for 8 persons have beds in the entrance next to the kitchen and is not comfortable if somebody wants to have breakfast early or eat late.
Review 129:After returning home I wrote a letter to Waikiki Beachside Hostel asking to find and keep my shoes I left in my room A303. My Honolulu friend can take the shoes from reception. I received only such reply: "Thank you for contacting the Waikiki Beachside Hostel! Your message is important to us. We will respond within 24 to 48 hours." But actually they have never responded.
Review 130:I stayed at Waikiki Beachside Hostel three times: in 2010, 2013 and the last time in Oct-Nov 2014. Location is good. Reasonable fares.
Review 131:The fact that we didn't get a fridge in the room. We didn't get a locker. We didn't get a kitchen. All the other rooms seemed to have these but not ours.
Review 132:No proper air conditioning, affecting quality of sleep. Rooms need renovation
Review 133:Close proximity to beach, main strip and nightlife. Value for money Free dinner on Halloween night
Review 134:It is really noise!!! and the room doesn't have air conditioning so you should let the window open
Review 135:The location is really good and the staff is super friendly! also the laundry facilities are good price and convenient!
Review 136:For luggage deposit on the day of departure you have to pay usd 5.a/c only available in semi-private rooms
Review 137:Location; staff is very friendly and helpful; toast, coffee and tee forbreakfast included
Review 138:Wifi isn't great in the room but it has good connection in the public area where i could meet people across the world and it is great.
Review 139:The hostel is located just off the Queens beach which is amazingly good for snorkeling with its underwater caves, fishes, sometimes turtles and sharks, on the right side of the beach is good for surfing. About the hostel the most important plus was the staff, they are amazingly friendly and supportive. Just come to waikiki without any plan (like me) they will help you out with the best recommendations in the island. Rooms are big and clean, needless to say comfortable to sleep.
Review 140:the room was a bit hot. Somehow it isn't well ventilated for a hot place, the fans don't really do much! New fans might help. The paint on the bathroom doors needed a paint job. Made the room look tired.
Review 141:wonderful and helpful staff, good location and great layout for small mixed dorm
