Reviews for Big Ten Inn

Review 1:I specified a nonsmoking room online, and was given a smoking room. I am sure that if I had complained I could have gotten a different room, but was too tired to complain or move.

Review 2:It was convenient to get to the VA clinic from

Review 3:The stench.. had to try 3 rooms to get one that candles would then neutralize..toilet wobbly..refrigerator smelled like sour milk, even tho it was clean..

Review 4:It was near Perkins restaurant

Review 5:Having to leave work early and the boys not getting Thanksgiving dinner because front desk closing at four. Being threatened with the loss of reservation the day of the reservation with just enough time to drive four hours as fast as I could to get there. Not being able to contact staff to get more towels. Having a loud grinding noise go on when turning on the bathroom light. Never again.

Review 6:Pillows and bed comfortable.

Review 7:Parking lot could have been cleaner. There was broken glass and was worried about my dog stepping on it. Would be nice since you are pet friendly hotel, if you could add receptacles to put dog waste in to keep the hotel cleaner.

Review 8:Liked the location because it was near restaurants and close to the train to ride for the Hawkeye game.

Review 9:Bad smell in room and no early check in. Very dated, still uses real keys. Tube TV with non-working remote.

Review 10:Great price and only hotel I could find with for a one night stay on game day in Iowa City. It's also apparent they are making it a better hotel by making some updates but they still have a ways to go.

Review 11:I booked smoking room. When I got there the guy at the front desk was rude said there was no smoking rooms. There was 3 cars in the parking lot. Apparently they only have 2 smoking rooms. My entire stay there was only 3 cars in the lot.

Review 12:Very outdated building, rooms were not equipped with conveniences like hair dryer or lotions much less an iron. Door was secured with a metal key which was required to lock upon exit. Door opened to parking spot only 2 feet away.

Review 13:Location was convenient.

Review 14:No plug in the bathtub, curtains were in poor condition, old television, chairs were old and desk chair was ripped up.

Review 15:The bed was comfortable and the place was quiet.

Review 16:Wifi didn't work. Non-smoking room smelled like cigarette smoke. Didn't expect room entry during two-night stay... hotel should give option to avoid surprising customers like that.

Review 17:Nice to have microwave and frig in room.

Review 18:The only door to the room wasn't a standard door it was a sliding glass door with one lock on it

Review 19:Was located by food places and 24 he gas/coffee

Review 20:Was a little hesitant at first after entering the sparse office/lobby and the shabby hotel parking area and entry way.

Review 21:We were pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. The room was clean, the microwave and fridge were clean and working properly. The AC was quite and efficient. I especially liked the numerous electric outlets, especially the ones on the table lamp base.

Review 22:a bit on the scruffy side, room could have been cleaner, no windows to open for fresh air

Review 23:Very friendly female desk clerk, location, comfy bed, interesting variety of guests, refrigerator in room

Review 24:Loud, old hvac units that were just adequate. Non-smoking rooms still smelled like cigarettes because smokers stand outside to smoke. Smell enters rooms via intake on the hvac units. Pretty stinky!

Review 25:Clean; low price; location right off the freeway.

Review 26:The motel clerk

Review 27:Booked on Priceline lady working office was very rude told me there were no rooms available. When I showed her my phone and told her it took my credit card number she then said ( well your just bumping someone else ) I told her it shouldn't be online for people to book then. Other than that it was a quiet pleasant stay.

Review 28:Dirty and run down. Not suitable for a family. We sacrificed the cost of the room and left without staying.

Review 29:The gentleman at the desk did his best to help, but the place was a disaster.

Review 30:i didn't like the attitude of the cleaning maid she was very nasty with her mouth towards me about the dirty towel and just unfriendly doing my stay .

Review 31:well everything else was nice and clean

Review 32:Nothing at all about the place I liked! No free breakfast, cricket in the bathtub, TV outdated and picture fuzzy and beds were hard and I was charged the wrong price!

Review 33:The attitude of staff was very disappointing. The room was not clean as we would have liked it to be. The bathroom ceiling above shower was falling down so could not take shower. There were dead cockroaches on the mattresses as well as spiders and all types of bugs in room. The hotel did not serve breakfast or had coffee in room. We had to be moved to another room.

Review 34:The hotel was in a good location. It was close to hospitals as well as close to restaurants.

Review 35:Decor was dated, but well kept. The room was clean. Wifi easy to access. Refrigerator in the room was a nice touch. The hotel itself is located near many dining options and the local mall. The information booklet in the room was helpful to choose my dinner, as I had never been to Iowa City in the past.

Review 36:That the emergency stairs at both ends of the building were blocked by several box spring sets. The furniture in the room was in poor repair. The gal at the desk was difficult and wanted to argue when we got there about having a non smoking room when I had clearly booked a non smoking room. There were no coffee makers in the rooms or microwaves. The vent in the bathroom didn't work at all. While we aren't handicapped, I am recovering from a broken leg, the only room (after much argument) that was non smoking was on the second level, no elevator access. They still use keyed entry which is far less safe than card readers.

Review 37:It was a room. It appeared to be fairly clean.

Review 38:the place is to expensive for the quality it doesnt have. bad smell everywhere, ugly stained carpets that are losing pieces as you walk, furniture had spread dirt and hair of all body areas. as for the building, burn it and build it from the scratch.

Review 39:reception tried to help

Review 40:The nonsmoking room smelled like really old smoke stains. The smoking room barely smelled worse!

Review 41:It was exactly what I thought it would be. About half the price of any other hotel nearby.

Review 42:The fitted sheet did not stay on!!/Had to use top sheet and try tofix. Almost fell in shower. No nonskid strips on tub. Wi-Fi.intermittent

Review 43:Price. Close to hospital

Review 44:I didn't like the fact that room shook when a person walked outside our door... carpet was dirty.

Review 45:For the price.... the beds were clean and not too bad

Review 46:Definitely could have been cleaner. Obvious seamen stain on the carpet and our non smoking room smelled like cigrettes.

Review 47:Room was cheap especially for a king bed. located right off the highway, staff was friendly

Review 48:Booked a non smoking room and was put in a smoking room. The carpet was dirty and full of cigarette burns. The chair in the room was dirty and torn. Grabbed a washcloth to wash my face and it had black stains on it. The bedspread full of cigarette burns. There were holes in wall and it looked like someone punched a hole in the bathroom door.

Review 49:There is nothing positive to say about this hotel.

Review 50:The biggest complaint I have is that the doorway consists of a glass ceiling to floor window and full glass door. There is a curtain that covers that up. I was nervous to leave anything in the room even just to walk across the street for supper. They were also not room darkening so at night with the lights on in the room, people could see in through the curtain.

Review 51:In the room there is a sign that says each night is $100.00 plus. I doubt that is ever the rate as $45.00 is about right for the room. You get a bed, chair and fridge. The bathroom is ok with a tub. Overall good value however the hotel still uses traditional house keys to get in the room as well as regular tube TVs. Wifi is available but boots out within an hour; more of an annoyance.

Review 52:Room was a little musty. Lock was flimsy. Regular key and not card swipe. NO TV. Did not work and they said they dont have TV tonight.

Review 53:Very economical for the area

Review 54:Run down, worn out carpet and furniture with years of wear. Smelled of smoke even though non-smoking. Refrigerator did not work. Wi-fi internet worked for 5 minutes after 2 hours trying to have firm fix it. Neighborhood noisy and sketchy. This property should never be rated a 2 star.

Review 55:Nothing

Review 56:Slight cigarette odor in a non-smoking room. Carpet is old. Old-style TV. Slow free wi-fi. Door lock is operated by a metal key and is hard to lock from outside the room.

Review 57:Convenient location to the University of Iowa. McDonald's across the street. Clean towels. Microwave and frig in the room. Water is very hot. Overall, a good buy if you don't care for fancy stuff and just want to have a clean room for a couple of nights. Quiet in my room upstairs facing the street.

Review 58:Really didn't feel safe with a glass door. Also several of the doors we walked past had broken door jambswhere it was Ochoa someone had forced their way in. Our room was dark because there was 2 lightbulbs that were burned out.

Review 59:It was very noisy. The people in the room above us were moving around all night. Then at 1:00 am there were people outside yelling for a bit. It was very hard to sleep from all the noise.

Review 60:It was a good location.

Review 61:Staff didn't read my notes on Booking.com and had to switch our room. Booking.com reserved us a smoking room also even though they don't exist in this hotel.

Review 62:Free wifi and 5 mins from U of I hospital.

Review 63:Getting into/off the property from the street was difficult.

Review 64:There are many restaurants in the surrounding blocks and it is close to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Review 65:The beds were hard, the tub was dirty, the room was not heated when we git there, and the maid and front desk clerk kept pushing us to check out

Review 66:I liked the price, location and the young lady this tree checked us in was friendly

Review 67:No coffee maker in room. Several of the TV channels were fuzzy. HBO was unwatchable.

Review 68:Friendly staff. Clean room. Small fridge and microwave in room. Hi-speed WiFi.

Review 69:We felt unsafe because the doors were glass with flimsy locks. They were old The bed covers were old and the sheets did not seem clean. No one was on duty after midnight.

Review 70:The fact that the previous booking had to be cancelled due to a death in the family and I still got charged. I think that certain situations need to be taken into consideration when someone has to cancel at the last minute.

Review 71:The staff here is very friendly and helpful. They do a really good job! If you are looking for an inexpensive and comfortable place in Iowa City, this is it.

Review 72:no hot water at 7 a.m., not even luke warm! It was cool, which of course feels cold as hell in the shower. The curtain was translucent, so people coulse see in, and lights shown through all night. No breakfast. Thin walls, so neighbors are easy to hear.

Review 73:The price was right. The heater worked.

Review 74:They changed our reservation from non smoking to smoking! The room reeked of smoke. Cigarette burn holes in carpet everywhere. Water damage and chipping paint in bathroom. We checked out an went across the street. Big Ten Inn should be ashamed to offer that kind of room to people that travel 6 hours from home. In order to accommodate us, we were told that our sheets were double washed and smoke free and the room was deodorized. Double washed, smoke free sheets! Give me a break! I want a full refund.

Review 75:Nothing! It was a terrible experience and I want a full refund!

Review 76:Cigarette burns on spread and bedding; dim lights (not good at all for reading); very dirty carpet.

Review 77:Pleasant staff at check-in and check-out; location.

Review 78:The non-smoking room still smelled like smoke and I could still smell it the next day when I went for a professional meeting.

Review 79:Friendly staff and for the money ir was a nice place to crash for the night.

Review 80:just the microwave glitch, maybe AM breakfast bar would be nice- fruti/oatmeal/granola bars to help out.

Review 81:right off main road, close to restaurants, close to people I was visiting, near stores.

Review 82:Small TV 3rd floor room with no elevator No in room coffee pot Smoke smell in non smoking room

Review 83:Price Location Cleanliness Money left over to take the family out to dinner.

Review 84:on second floor, the door entrance is same location as the window, once door is closed from inside, you had to pull the curtain close to cover the door/window, very inconvenient going in and out.

Review 85:close to hwy, university, reasonable price

Review 86:I had a non - smoking room. Yet the comforter must have come from a smoking room which made the entire room smell. The remote was sticky. The toilet was dirty. The blanket was stained. Also there is no way to totally darken your room since the curtains on the window & all glass door were too thin.

Review 87:no blowdryer in room. Requested one and received from front desk, however. Older decor and pillows a bit used.

Review 88:Cheap room in good location for University activities, sporting events, etc.Clean and allows pets.

Review 89:cobwebs all along the ceilings!

Review 90:bedding was very comfortable. view was amazing.

Review 91:Facilities were very old. It was unclean. It also felt unsafe.

Review 92:Location is good... That's it.

Review 93:Rail on balcony could be straightened, more secure looking

Review 94:Dirty rundown unsafe

Review 95:There are various bugs in the room...

Review 101:Bugs- bathroom really dirty. Old TV.

Review 102:Wished there was a little breakfast so would not have to make an extra stop.

Review 103:All was great and loved the frig and micro.

Review 104:Had to get booking.com involved to get agreed upon rate. Clerk wouldn't even look at our confirmation.

Review 105:Room was clean and comfortable

Review 106:Smell mold, seems unaccupied for long long time. Will never stay.

Review 107:It needs towel racks in the bathroom.

Review 108:It was worth what we paid.

Review 109:Shower head too low. Bathroom door needs to be replaced (animal scratches)

Review 110:Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 111:They gave me a smoking room, which I had not asked for, and had no otherroom available to move me into. Yech!!

Review 112:Cleanliness and overall appearance was poor. Curtains were tore, stains in the toilet and bathtub

Review 113:The convenience and location

Review 114:Room smelled bad

Review 115:Said it all in the headline. Plan on being there at least two more times this year.

Review 116:I think you should give your frequent visitors discounts for being a regular guest.

Review 117:I requested a smoking room and did not get one. I requested a wake-up call and did not get one.

Review 118:That the lounge was closed down an no hair dryer.
