Reviews for Hotel Shangri-La
Review 1:Valet staff not honest enough to admit what happened to my car..Someone does not know how to use the seat button on the driver seat side to push forward and backward the seat so they just forcefully move so the bottom part of the seat was broken...The funny part of my conversation with the valet supervisor was that when he told me that by law they cannot move the seat to adjust????I have not gone yet to the facility to file for the claim.
Review 2:Excellent housekeeping and room service
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:Gorgeous Art Deco hotel, got up graded to a two bedroom, two bathroom luxurious room for no extra cost. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Close to 3rd street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier
Review 5:The Shangri La Hotel is elegant, discrete, high quality and tasteful. The staff are committed and top notch, the location fantastic, the facilities excellent. The food is wonderful, the rooms peaceful and comfortable. It's so unique and has only gotten better than when we visited 11 years ago. I look forward to coming back.
Review 6:The elevators are too old and too small to fit even 5 pax.
Review 7:I really loved the location, staff are so helpful and honest. I checked out and left my wallet inside the safe, then called informing them that i left my wallet, but they said, i only not left a wallet but also my cash inside a plastic which i no longer remember that i left also inside the safe.
Review 8:The first guy at the reception desk lied to us and claimed to have upgraded us! We've already booked their most expensive suit and didn't find the extra bed we asked for when we booked online, had to call several times to get that! The sofa is the most uncomfortable one I've used, you can't rest your head while sitting on it and can't sleep on it. The hotel standard is not even a 4 stars..
Review 9:The next day staff were very nice to us and very professional, they did everything they could to make it up to us
Review 10:The most incredible location! Our room looked right out over the Pacific ocean, perfect for the sunset. Just round the corner from the best shops and restaurants in Santa Monica. We loved the fact that so many of the hotel's original Deco features had been preserved and incorporated, and that the modern touches had been sympathetically added.
Review 11:Group of young ladies celebrating a birthday, noisily well into the night. Not the fault of the hotel
Review 12:The efficient friendly staff Fantastic view from bedroom. Great breakfast
Review 13:This is an older Art-Decco property that was retrofitted to be up to date. Over-all good job on the update.
Review 14:Staff is very service oriented - really first class
Review 15:Need to have curtains in the bathroom to block the light coming into the bedroom if you only have glass separating the bedroom and bathroom... Was light in the room all night long
Review 16:Great view over the beach
Review 17:I thought the hotel was shabby--had a bit too many miles on it from the elevator--which was downright depressing, to my room--suite 501--it smelled "off" and was not clean and just a bit on the shabby side. for $350+ a night, I would not do it again. Additionally, there was a false fire alarm the night of 11.10.15 at about 3 in the morning (on 11.11.15) and it went on for way too long.
Review 18:The 5.30am fire alarm sounding off in the entire hotel wasn't ideal but I understand these things happen. However, the downside was that there was no communication between the hotel and the guests during the drill so no one informed us to evacuate or let us know it was a false alarm. I hate to think if it were a real emergency. Clearly manangent didn't inform their morning shift staff either as they stared at us blankly when we explained what had happened. Given how frustrated we were, they offered to wipe a couple of our drinks off the bill when we checked out :)
Review 19:Beautiful rooms with quality appliances and furnishings. We got an unexpected up grade to a verandah room and the view was spectacular. Rooftop bar is pretty trendy and a great place to have a nightcap before heading to bed.
Review 20:The bed was not comfortable enough , but beside that it was great
Review 21:It's a very well located hotel, with very friendly staff and great facilities, will recommend if someone is looking for a great place to stay in Santa Monica for sure
Review 22:Wonderful location. Charming friendly staff. Excellent service. Lovely Art Deco building with many original features, therefore not completely 'state of the art'. We loved it
Review 23:The bar staff were a little surly
Review 24:Amazing hotel, in a great location, at a great price. Could not believe our luck when we stumbled in after an 8 hour drive from Monterey. The staff are generally friendly and helpful, and the art deco design is brilliant. If we are ever in LA again this is where we will stay.
Review 25:Whilst hotel prices in California/LA are high, the prices here are VERY high for what you get. While we did have an ocean view, the room was the smallest of our whole 3 week trip and cost by far the most. Value for money is the only issue here.
Review 26:The location of this hotel is perfect for access to the beach, the Santa Monica pier or the shopping on 3rd Street. The room was very clean and stylishly decorated. The rooftop bar and pool area were both very pleasant.
Review 27:There is construction work going on which is quite disruptive to the peace and quiet usually experienced by the pool. The charge for valet parking is basically daylight robbery and when I asked about public parking the staff lied to me about alternatives.
Review 28:V comfortable / clean / elegant. Great location.
Review 29:Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Great location and lovely rooms. Nothing was too much trouble and the fruit platter, water and cupcakes left in our room was a lovely gesture.
Review 30:We got a free upgrade to a balcony room which was amazing and spacious!! Very modern hotel, so much so we decided to have in room dinner service which again was fantastic. Great hotel with great staff.
Review 31:1) Overpriced! Its simple, nice and comfy like a 4 star hotel, cool art deco design, but so expensive! 2) Restaurant service was below standards, not attentive and attitude from waiter when he made simple mistakes. Food was delicious though!
Review 32:1) Great location 2) Helpful reception staff
Review 33:The crowd around 5 oclock because the terrace bar is opened to all, many drunk Young people
Review 34:The antique atmosphere, the original design of the rooms. The marvelous bathtub
Review 35:Lack of transport options provided.
Review 36:No alternative transport to downtown explained when hotel staff informed us the shuttle was no longer running. We discovered a bus stop and day ticket pass available on that ourselves, similarly the concierge never told us we could get the trolley bus tour from the hotel as it did one pick up a day.
Review 37:This property is great for couples! From the bathroom glass you can see through to the entrance of the bathroom and the bedroom if the curtains are drawn in the tub area. Makes it a bit difficult for privacy when travelling with children..... Not sure if all the rooms are like that but ours was. There was construction happening outside which is not the hotels fault and from the bedroom with one bed you can't hear it but if your travelling with children sleeping in the sofa bed the noise from the construction is really unbearable. Not a problem if you get up and out by 8AM when the construction starts.... however again not sure if it is every room... we were in room 507. The bed was not as comfortable nor the sofa bed. The mattresses definitely need to be changed. It will do, but for the money your paying I thought the mattresses could be upgraded.
Review 38:Loved the location and the staff always went above and beyond what was required and very apologetic and as accomodating as possible to resolve any issues. That made up for some of the inconveniences.
Review 39:Everything was good if we had to be picky the bed was a little uncomfortable and creaked every time we moved just a little bit.
Review 40:Location, staff were very helpful and hotel very clean!
Review 41:They do not clean their floors. First impression of the hotel is dirty and the impression continues. The room was spotlessly clean though. Miserable breakfast. They call one egg+one piece of bacon+ salad or hash + coffee full American breakfast.
Review 42:Excellent seaview from the room Excellent pool area Excellent front desk staff Excellent room
Review 43:Loves the room and location I thought the patio could have used a little landscaping for more privacy but it was really all around great Thanks !
Review 44:Great location for exploring Santa Monica, nice rooms and has a lovely pool area for relaxing. Staff are friendly and accommodating our room was not ready when we arrived but they gave us a free room upgrade and $ to spend in the bar while we waited.
Review 45:TV system quirky and would prefer movie channel and/or DVD player.
Review 46:Service and location are unbeatable. It's an older building so couple hiccups but engineering quickly fixed. Plan to return!
Review 47:Only two disappointing experiences. We ordered in-room breakfast for our final day which never arrived. Also guy at reception on Thursday of our visit, thought he was being funny making an insulting remark to my husband when we enquired about the weather - he said "no monsoons unless you are planning on jumping in the ocean" (He mixed up tsunami/monsoon but intent was understood- my husband is a large man who took it in his stride but I thought it was rude.) The other reception desk staff were mostly helpful.
Review 48:The hotel was in an excellent location. The valets, porters, and cleaning staff were very friendly. Room was very nice and surprisingly sound proof (couldn't hear surrounding construction). Restaurant meal was very nice and well presented (although may be expensive by some measures) - friendly waitress.
Review 49:We booked a two bedroom suite and we were not allowed to use the pool or rooftop bar on the day of our arrival due to a 'private party'. For the price we paid we should have had access to all of the hotel's facilities.
Review 50:Location of property, friendly staff
Review 51:Wi-Fi speed is unworkable and internet connection Needs to be upgraded to match the rest of the property and services
Review 52:Friendly staff Good Location Clean property
Review 53:- Sometimes slow WiFi
Review 54:+ Location - close to the beach and Santa Monica pier. Short bike ride to Venice beach + Friendly staff (we even got upgraded) + Nice swimming pool area and roof top bar + Free coffee in the lobby
Review 55:I guess it had to happen but was a bit surprised that they repainted half the pool area in the middle of summer
Review 56:Location is great with the pier, shopping and great bars nearby. Loved the massive bathroom and the warm welcome when we arrived
Review 57:The bar staff outside were rude so it was basically one rotten egg who ruined what could have been an amazing experience. The hotel does not updating (the patio and lobby especially) for a luxury hotel.
Review 58:The staff who greeted me were accommodating and very friendly and loved my room. Beautiful views and comfy bed were the highlights.
Review 59:Annoyed that for the money we paid we were kicked out of the pool one afternoon/night as there was a private function on. Staff around to pool very slow. I ordered a water and a cocktail on two occasions neither showed up... Our room was incredibly noisy as we were next to the passage at the back of the hotel and whenever a car drove over a grate it woke us up. Also the noisy private function was right outside our room. Check out is 12pm, check in is 3pm. We were leaving for the airport at 1pm so asked if we could keep our room until 1pm when we left. We were told no latest 12:30pm which given the experience we had up to that point I felt was disappointing.
Review 60:Great location near the pier and shipping areas. Rooftop bar offers best views of the sunset but get there early. Pool area nice. Bell staff very helpful
Review 61:The so called rock and roll suite was a dump filthy veranda, beat up furniture, curtains falling off hooks, dirty patio furniture. Asked for towels 3 times never got them asked to have veranda cleaned never happened.
Review 62:The pool area was beautiful however the attitude of the staff spoils the beauty of this place
Review 63:The gym kind of sucked however most hotels overdo the cardio equipment and throw them in the basement.
Review 64:The rooms are SO classy and the washrooms are spectacular. Pool area was closed but darling and the location is epic.
Review 65:I did not like the fact when I was at the penthouse we where not assisted after staying in my seat to see if anyone was going to ask us if wanted anything for 15min to go by and no help but funny thing another couple came and they where helped no more than 5minutes from there arrival everyone is seen coming and going so I do not know what the issue was with very little people in sight so I apologized to my girl and just went directly to bar and the bartender was great
Review 66:The view was great , location location location
Review 67:Light streams in from the bathroom window during the night as there isn't (and can't be) a curtain.
Review 68:Nice room with good views of the ocean (if you pay for it).
Review 69:Nothing!
Review 70:By far the most impressive thing was how lovely every member of the staff were, they gave us loads of great suggestions for where to eat and drink so we feel like locals. Great location too, and the rooftop bar is excellent. Highly reccomended.
Review 71:Furniture and bathrooms had seen better days. Lots of road noise.
Review 72:Very friendly staff. Spacious clean rooms. The rooms had hardwood flooring which was really nice.
Review 73:Unable to shower without flooding bathroom. Very slippery bathroom floor, unsafe tub entrance and exit, no handicap access to tub, Many requests to concierge,/ front desk ignored including room service menu, childish amenities that are extremely overpriced.
Review 74:Location
Review 75:The hotel is one of the oldest I have ever been and need to be heavily renovated. Although the location is fantastic, the facility is not worth the money.
Review 76:The location is really nice!
Review 77:I almost cancelled this reservation due to all the negative comments (and second guessing my choice) but I'm glad I didn't - this place deserves a higher rating. The valet parking is expensive, so go to the parking garage around the corner to save some $.
Review 78:We stayed here after a long holiday in Hawaii & West Coast, and we loved every moment of it and were sad to leave! Granted, we did get our room upgraded but the room was *amazing* -- two bedrooms, a living room a huge wrap around balcony and a view of the ocean. Private sunset viewings every evening! Room service was fast & good, the bar was also great and trendy, staff were all *excellent* and helpful, room very comfy, location great with a public parking garage right around the corner.
Review 79:Unfortunately, our room wasn't really when we arrive at 10 pm. The clean up staff were less than spectacular, towels were tattered and often left wet. The shower control didn't work properly, they fixed it.the lights had no individual controls all on or all off. No ability to read while partner sleeps.
Review 80:Great location.potential to be a fantastic property. The staff was appologetic and receptive to criticism, but the problems still did not get fixed. It did not live up to expectation of a Small Luxury Hotel property. Pity because it good be lovely!
Review 81:Great location, nice pool area that gets the sun in the morning, great roof top bar and nice restaurant downstairs. Room was well equipped and the bed was very comfortable.
Review 82:The receptionist forgot to tell that all information about the hotel was in the small piece of paper folded to keep the key card in.
Review 83:Very friendly welcoming staff
Review 84:Don't expect holes in my towels from a hotel with the shangri-la name.. buy some new ones. Asked for the password for free WiFi at check in and was told it would prompt me for and email.. it didn't, it prompted me for a password so I didn't bother.. Grotty waterdamaged tiles/floor in the bathroom.. expected better.
Review 85:Good safe location..
Review 86:Bed and pillows were too soft for me resulting in back and neck pain No mini-bar fridge in room - had to rely on ice to keep drinks cold
Review 87:Art deco architecture Very friendly and helpful staff
Review 88:The location is wonderful - the staff is extremely helpful. This hotel does not belong to the Shangri-La chain - that was confusing- but it is still a great place to stay in Santa Monica.
Review 89:The room was very dated, especially the windows, carpets and some of the furniture. It felt like it all needed a serious clean-up and makeover. The sofa bed was small and not very nice with some very old IKEA duvets thrown on top for the kids. A/C again old and extremely noisy. All in all very poor value for money at 615 dollars per night...
Review 90:The hotel's location was very good. The building is beautiful with lots of Art Deco features. Staff is friendly and valet parking very efficient.
Review 91:- doors locks get blocked when in heat (sunlight) leaving hosts outside and requiring staff intervention (came very fast) - wifi coverage was not available in the restaurant and did not cover the whole room - we found no towels at all in the bathroom when returning to the room one of the afternoons - breakfast was good but only cooked English/American options, no buffet with fresh vegetables and fruits, or cheese
Review 92:- splendid location, near the ocean, close to Santa Monica entertainment area - nice renovated facilities with an Art Deco atmosphere - helpful staff - good restaurant
Review 93:Bar upstairs has great views but gets very loud in the evening so if you want somewhere for a quiet drink. Restaurant food was inconsistent quality but they tried hard to make up short comings
Review 94:two bedroom suite with ocean views was perfect for our family with the extra fold out be in living room (but beware not suitable for an adult or older child)
Review 95:1. A little bit more expensive but quite worthwhile to stay here 2. The gym at the basement was OK. But did not exceed my expectations that I had had for a hotel in this calibre.
Review 96:1. Nice roomy araa with two bedrooms and two shower bathrooms. 2. Great ocean view 3. Great neighborwood, where you can walk around even at night.
Review 97:Too expensive, price-quality is not okay, some staff at sky bar not friendly, price for valet parking is not normal
Review 98:Very good location, good fitness, nice sky bar, enjoying bath
Review 99:Rooms were expensive Weren't the most adept at splitting the bill with my friend
Review 100:Staff v friendly Roof top sunset bar (does get v busy) Fire pit by the pool Good food Free coffee in the am
Review 101:It's a pity the pool doesn't get the evening sun at all and the bar gets packed out with tourists not even buying a drink!
Review 102:Love the art deco styling, the staff are great and the bar has a great vibe and a great view from the roof terrace. The pool is nice too.
Review 103:There wasn't a hair dryer in the room and I was too lazy to call and ask for one.
Review 104:What a great little hotel. The people were friendly, the food good, the room beautifully re-furbished. This is a grand art deco experience. A real original. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in - including mine at home.
Review 105:Many things..I Was deceived by pictures and by the name Shangri-la whichfor me means luxury! It was a 4 star hotel in a 2 star look. I canaccept the old decor rooms and facilities but I cannot take old dirtytowels and a bathroom that turns into a pond after a 5 minute shower! Iam pretty sure that even cheap motels have better bathrooms and newertowels. For the amount of money we paid, I just can say that we aredisappointed!
Review 106:Location is excellent and staff are very friendly
Review 107:Weird bathroom with a smoked glass seperating wall between bedroom. Unfortunately the bottom panes are clear glass and the toilet can clearly be seen along with anyone using it. Bath is large but very deep and a small aluminium step is provided for getting in and out, but its still difficult doing so.
Review 108:A fantastic location overlooking the beach and sea. Approximate a 400 metres stroll to the pier. Shops and eateries just round the corner. Hotel looks good from the park opposite. Comfortable bed and well stocked fridge.
Review 109:Warm welcome. Nothing too much trouble. Excellent service from the front desk especially Sonny. Pool was very quiet and spotlessly clean. Bed really comfy.
Review 110:The hotel room was small, air conditioning was hard to set for a consistent temp. Most of the TV channels audio dropped out. Eventually gave up watching TV, which can be a good thing, but not when you are suffering jet lag. No coffee or tea in the room, appently guests have request. Way too expensive for what you get. There are far better hotels in the area for similar room rates.
Review 111:Staff were extremely present and helpful.
Review 112:do not recommend for the business traveler. no wifi in my room! entrance staff does not lift a finger. they let me lift my luggage up the steps myself while one held the door, and the other just stood there. breakfast service takes long, not a buffet for the busy person wanting to get out fast.
Review 113:great location nice pool, but sun is only until 3pm
Review 114:This is a great hotel. Don't change anything.
Review 115:The staff are so friendly and would only be to happy to help with anything. Location is perfect and the Roof Bar is a Gem. It's a hotel with 1920's feel but funky at the same time. Would suit any age group.
Review 116:Dinner menu was a little average at ground floor restaurant but seemed to be more impressive upstairs at rooftop bar.
Review 117:Hotel was in a great location and staff were very helpful. Loved the fitness centre and rooftop bar.
Review 118:I never review hotels, but in this case a single young woman was attempting to check in, and the nighttime reception receptionist was extremely rude to her, inattentive and in the end we almost moved her to another hotel - just a terrible experience
Review 119:Paying for parking yet again, there is no escaping it, couldn't find anywhere else to park .......
Review 120:Perfect hotel perfect location but to me a little expensive for a room only . I wouldn't mind paying $411 for one night if the parking was included and breakfast . Or a drink, Parking is an extra $36 . Lovely clean different room massive bath and the pool area was lovely. Would just be a nice touch for these hotels to include parking if paying that much.
Review 121:The pool is very small. You can not really swim there. The rooms are very small, windows are old and the bathroom is small and the bathtub itself is too high. Shower is bad. The roof top bar closes at midnight. For the price paid you would expect much better rooms and a better pool area.
Review 122:The hotel is located on the main street near the beach. It has a good but very small roof top bar. The concierge service was excellent and really helped us organise a lot of different things. Whenever we had any sort of problems, they were very helpful.
Review 123:Fair staff attitude with cold welcome. Instructions to reach the room given so quickly that i would challenge any non-mother tongue to catch them, a clear lack of respect for the guest.Hot water in the shower missing both in the evening after 21:00 and in the morning at 10:00; taking a cold shower after the last walk on the beach before checking-out was really the cherry on the cake! Hair dryer missing in the suite, we searched everywhere. If it were somewhere, it was well hidden. Considering the above, it's overpriced and overrated, not a 5-star.
Review 124:Location, charming view from the suite.
Review 125:I thought the hotel staff were more interested in off the street guests going to the rooftop bar than the guests staying at the hotel. The rooms were small despite saying we had an extra large room. The shower setup is not satisfactory all in all it was just another hotel room and did not warrant the price tag that came with it.
Review 126:Location and view
Review 127:A fake shangri la hotel. Dirty, old, tiny rooms, tiny pool, terrible design bathroom that leaked every time you take a shower. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. Towels are old and yellowish grey. The 2 bedroom suite furnitures has marks all over them. A motel standard with a 5 star price.
Review 128:Majority of the staff were excellent Excellent location Hotel driver chokri is excellent
Review 129:So so service. Staff were helpful when assistance was sought but no service with a smile here otherwise. Pictures on website look better than what it's really like in person. Older building needs a spiff up.
Review 130:Location was good being in front of the ocean. Restaurant served pretty good food.
Review 131:The cost of the rooms were far more expensive and the value for money could not be seen, compared to other hotels we stayed in the past 7 weeks.
Review 132:Great views from the 700 room. And the pool area was excellent.
Review 133:The sofa bed really full of food
Review 134:N/a
Review 135:The staff are very friendly and helpful. Overall they make you feel they value your business. One of my favourite hotels.
Review 136:Needs a refurbishment. Very dated. Rooms feel dark
Review 137:good location with beach views
