Reviews for Surf Motel and Gardens
Review 1:We now pay new $20 fee for our dog, used to be $10. We skip the breakfast ( the basic pastries, fruit, juice)- walk over to David's Restaurant instead for a big breakfast to get you through a day of hiking, kayaking, or boogie boarding. One easy fix new owners could do is to provide hot cups with lids-- I always spill coffee on my arm carrying it back to the room :( The pet rooms are not as updated as the non-pet rooms.
Review 2:Great location (easy walk to grocery store) and grounds for dog include a dog run. In summers we like to use the BBQ area and enjoy the fire pit in the evenings. Gazebo for reading. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure for showers. Cleaning area for fishermen.
Review 3:The cleanest and well thought out for pets that I have ever stayed in. They have a dog run and it was in great shape. Breakfast has a nice variety also. A great place to stay and if you have a Pet, the only place to stay!!!!
Review 4:It's an older place, which is fine, but the shower needs work. The temperature would fluctuate. I did report it to staff, who said they would have a plumber look into it.
Review 5:Great bed, nice to have silent electric heat instead of those noisy ones with blowers. The grounds and little dog park are fabulous. There was even a place for fishermen to clean their fish, as well as horseshoes, a fire pit & lovely gardens. Nice to be able to easily walk to market, etc..
Review 6:Staff was friendly and our room was neat and fairly spacious. The bathroom was even equipped with a bath tub.For a stay under $100 I was very impressed!!!
Review 7:thermostat in room was difficult to use, no decaf coffee at breakfast
Review 8:great location near beaches and downtown, helpful staff, very spacious, well furnished room
Review 9:There was a yapping dog next door which was an annoyance but it turned out that we only heard one peep out of those guests when they would shush the dog. The next night, the yappy dog was replaced with overly loud talkers. We could hear their entire conversation without trying. Also we noticed a cat urine odor coming from the corner of the room. One suggestion would be to keep pet owners grouped together on the outside rooms, not sandwich non pet owners and pet owners together. Also that would eliminate non pet owners from staying in rooms with animal urine smells. Other than those observations, the controllable factors of the motel were great. Would definitely come back!
Review 10:Great value. Safe, comfortable, cute, well maintained. Pretty landscaping. Love that it was right next door to the Boatyard shopping center and that we could store all the treats that we purchased at the Harvest Market in the little refrigerator and that we could heat up our leftovers using the microwave. The shower was clean, big and pretty modern looking. I also liked that the sink and vanity was separate from the shower and toilet so that we could coordinate getting ready very easily. Location is also great being that it has Mendocino on one end and Downtown Fort Bragg on the other side.
Review 11:When we came in the room was very cold. Heater was off and the temperature outside was in the 30's. We turned on the water heater in the base board and it took a long time for the room to get to a comfortable temperature. also the "thermostat" had no markings. The information folder was in a folder instead of a three-ring binder. You had to take all the sheets out to be able to read them. But the weirdest thing was that although the room was plenty large, they had placed the bed so that one of the night tables was sideways and you could not open its drawers. See the picture. If they had moved the table even 8 inches that would have solved the problem. or get smaller night tables.
Review 12:Beautiful grounds although it probably would be nicer in Spring or Summer. The room was carpeted with no wear shown. The room was sufficiently large.
Review 13:Floors were dirty, staff very unfriendly and couldn't find any help from staff for clogged toilet. Told by staff to do it myself cuz she was alone.
Review 14:Nothing
Review 15:The faucet in room 135 needs a new handle (not a whole new faucet, just the part you grab) had gotten quite funky.
Review 16:Fabulous location. Be sure to walk across street out to headlands open space trail, from where you can look back into the Noyo Harbor.
Review 17:Staff was friendly and happy! Room was clean, comfortable and smelled good. Gardens were pretty, and I can't wait to see them in summer. Breakfast was sufficient with all items stocked well.
Review 18:1970s linoleum bathroom floors, heavily strained unattractive industrial carpeting throughout. Breakfast includes raisin bran or cheerios and packaged Danishes. Wheat bread optional. Blech.
Review 19:Great location
Review 20:not very sound proof. adjoining door to next room... but, everyone was quiet., so no problem.
Review 21:good basic motel. good for a solo traveler. has a washer and dryer. near a shopping center w/super markets and restaurants.
Review 22:Cute Motel with a huge garden to chill at and when the weather isn't that good, you have some cosy chairs to chill at inside. 5minutes walk to the ocean, but glass beach is further away.
Review 23:Didn't have anything we didn't like really. I think the continental breakfast could be better. Like something warm to eat cause it gets cold. We loved everything though.
Review 24:The Staff was awesome! Sam and Jennifer were very friendly and made our visit very comfortable.
Review 25:Seating in a gazebo wasn't comfortable, with seats placed too far from a table. In our room, a nightstand on the right side of the bed was impossible to use with its drawers opening toward the bed. Also, my question about a returning guest discount I saw on another website was ignored by a front desk person.
Review 26:Good location, nice grounds
Review 27:We had no bad experiences, and overall for the price, it's a great place to stay unless you want to spend $250 or more a night!
Review 28:The rooms had recently been updated and painted and were very clean. I loved the gardens and waterfall and the fact they have a pet friendly area, even though I didn't have a pet. It also has a BBQ area, fire pit and even free wood to burn! It's walking distance to a Harvest Market, which we loved, and a nice restaurant.
Review 29:The room smelled faintly of smoke even though it's a non-smoking room.
Review 30:The front lobby clerk and housekeeping staff were so wonderful and sweet!! I loved the garden - it was beautiful! Loved that the motel was easy to find right on the main street just off the highway.
Review 31:The breakfast was pretty terrible. It wouldn't take much for them to dramatically improve it.
Review 32:The gardens are nice, the rooms are clean and a great value!
Review 33:I very much appreciate the welcome feeling from the staff and owner. And the feeling I got of them caring about my husband and I having a good experience at the motel. I love the grounds: the gardens, an off leash dog play area, a fish cleaning area, and plenty of outside space. There's even an outside shower! And when our dog was still alive we loved that there are a few dog allowed rooms, so we could have our dog with us ion the room. There is even an outside bar-b-g and picnic table area so you can grill ann eat outside if you want to. Unusual for a motel. The ownership has changed since those days and I really liked the vibe I got from the new owner.
Review 34:The bed & furnishings were very worn. This facility could use an update of new beds, night stands & chairs (looks like they have been in use at least 20 years).
Review 35:This hotel was surprisingly quiet given its location right off Hwy 1. The room was spacious and had many wonderful amenities like a mini fridge, coffee maker & microwave. Gorgeous gardens!
Review 36:We were close to the Highway so we did have traffic noise until about 11pm. It wasn't too bad as we had our window open. There were dogs there but we didn't have any trouble with too much barking.
Review 37:The gardens were beautiful. The room was a good size and the King bed was comfortable. The location is walking distance to the store and David's restaurant where we ate breakfast.
Review 38:The staff were very friendly and helpful with local suggestions. Also have good coffee and quick breakfast items. Lots of loving.care given to their garden which makes it great to not be on just a parking lot.
Review 39:The fellow guests. One guy burned a trashcan to the ground by placing hot coals in it. Dumb. Another guest thought it appropriate to park her dumb Prius perpendicular to the parking spots in front of her room. Really dumb.
Review 40:The accomodations were a good value. Rachel was great with checking us in efficiently.
Review 41:We had to switch rooms because of an ant infestation. Lots of dead ants too, so I'm sure they were aware of the issue before we arrived. Might want to keep an eye on cleanliness.
Review 42:The staff at the front desk is very helpful. The beds are comfortable. Fairly close to Fort Bragg's Main Street, but not quite walking distance.
Review 43:There was no record of our confirmed booking with Booking.com!!! Hot/Cold control of shower was lethal.
Review 44:Convenient stop between Gold Beach and San Francisco. Receptionist found us a room even though there was no record of our Booking.com booking!
Review 45:Booked a king size bed and got a queen! the next day we moved to another room w/ two queens since they had to clean a king size bedroom and we didn't want to wait around for it.
Review 46:close to everything we needed
Review 47:Central and good place for short time visit. Close to the beach in a very nice environment. To recommend: Mc Kerricher State Parc. Friendly staff and standard comfort for this price class.
Review 48:We enjoyed our stay , our room was very cleant and well maintained. The breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly and made sure we did not need anything. The property was in excellent condition and the office was manned and ready to help if we needed it.
Review 49:WiFi didn't work most of the time, but they had tech working on a on going problem.
Review 50:Fair price for value compare to other hotel in the area. Room was clean and bed comfortable.
Review 51:Next to road too loud, no plugs by bed and no ac , had to leave windows open because of heat but then loud road noise all night resulting in poor sleep
Review 52:Older property (1960's vintage) that could use some updating. Towels a little thin.
Review 53:Clean, relatively quiet, overall an adequate accommodation for the price.
Review 54:Rooms can be a tad stuffy after a warm day - air con would be greatly appreciated (not a deal breaker however :)
Review 55:Friendly staff, comfy bed, beautiful grounds. 15 minutes away from MacKerricher State Park too! :)
Review 56:at checkout we were told the printer didn't work and I paid with cash. Was told I would get a rec'pt. mailed which I had to call for when it wasn't rec'd. Fairly certain what I paid was more than what showed on bill. They did offer a % refund back to "deposit" card. Thus, advice is to pay with card or get "written" rec'pt at checkout.
Review 57:friendly staff, adequate facilities, good central location
Review 58:No air conditioning. No useable outlets in room. Broken venetian blinds. Loose toilet seat. Wound up checking out, getting a refund and going to Motel 6 where everything always works.
Review 59:The garden and grounds.
Review 60:We went to breakfast at 8:30 (breakfast is from 8 to 10 ) and almost everything was gone. people came in after us and there was nothing left and it was well before 10.
Review 61:Good location
Review 62:Location and facilities were good, but not really walkable. The room was clean and the beds pretty comfy. The price, considering it was 4th of July weekend was appropriate for the accommodations.
Review 63:The breakfast was very spare - packaged rolls and cereal. No plates for toast. When a guest asked if there were trays the staff person snapped, "go get the one from your room." With a little effort, it could be much better and match the rest of the experience.
Review 64:Comfortable, cozy room with nice amenities. Great garden!
Review 65:Very disappointed in value versus costs! No creature comforts at all forover $175 per night! Inconsistency in pricing - overcrowded parking lotno a/c Tiny bathroom terrible mattress
Review 66:Absolutely nothing
Review 67:The small refrigerator had a foul odor and stunk up the room when opened. The shower, which obviously had been "updated," had a high 10" step-up to get in - very awkward! The continental breakfast was the worst I've seen.
Review 68:The bed was comfortable, and the motel location was close to services. Staff was polite and welcoming.
Review 69:Bathroom was terrible, shower door wouldn't close, floor curling up and dirty. Less time on flowers and more on room.. Definitely not an 8.0 rating
Review 70:location was good.
Review 71:Delux room more like a standerd room veary small had a reservation got there they had rented our room to somone else. Rooms are veary hot asked for a fan they gave us one still had to open the windows the grounds are not as nice as the pictures show online the pet area is so bad my dogs did not want to use it but that is my apenuion will not stay there agin will go to the north end of town nicer motels
Review 72:staff was friendly close to sore.Mc Donalds,Subway & more
Review 73:The motel has a private entrance just off the main street. there was not a lot of traffic on the access road.I was worried when they put us in the room next to the laundry facilities and the ice machine, but it was actually pretty quiet.
Review 74:The bed blanket had a large tear it and the bed sheets were too small for the bed. The walls are very thin at this hotel and you can easily hear normal conversations in the next room.
Review 75:They do have a nice garden area and it is convenient to drive to Mendocino
Review 76:There was much to like about this property: value, convenience, central garden, and the basic amenities we prefer. The staff was very helpful in recommending a place for dinner.
Review 77:Wifi was sporadic (a downer for the teens).
Review 78:The motel was clean, staff friendly and was much nicer than we expected. New owners have renovated the bathrooms and put in new carpet. The gardens were amazing and we liked having the outdoor grill/picnic area.
Review 79:The wi-fi connection was nearly nonexistent. The gentleman that checked us in did forewarn us of this. He said that the fair that was set up across the road was somehow interfering with the hotel's Internet connection. This may not be a problem for guests staying when the fair is not there. Our neighbors were very loud very early in the morning.
Review 80:Great shower pressure and very hot water. This was important to my friend and I because our day has been cold and rainy. Parking is close to the room since the motel is only one level. I also like that the sink is in a separate area from the toilet and shower.
Review 81:first night room wouldn't even rate a 2 was .Horrible..(should have gotten money back on that., or extremely discounted.) When got moved next night, was a nice room and would have rated it 3.5-4. Was more what they showed on Net.
Review 82:beautiful grounds. Most of the staff were nice..except not impressed with the guy who checked us in and gave us the horrible room the first night. Horrible room and bad attitude
Review 83:Do not advertise continental breakfast. Just offer fruit, tea/coffee, juice. That was NOT that great.
Review 84:Beautiful gardens, great TV, clean and good location.
Review 85:Hous keeping staff knocked on our door every morning even though the DND sign was out. We did mention this to the management and were assured they would address it.
Review 86:The room was clean and the staff was helpful and nice. All in all a good place to stay when looking for a central and reasonably priced motel.
Review 87:i didn't like the fact my sheets were obviously unwashed and the bath tub was equally dirty
Review 88:i loved finding nail clippings in the bed and pubic hair in the bath tub.
Review 89:Wish it had an outdoor hot shower for the k9s. The bathroom shower and the water pressure made it impossible to bathed the k9s.
Review 90:Love the garden and the dog run is a huge plus for our k9s
Review 91:Rooms could use a litttle updating. New blinds, bed covers. Mini fridge was rusty, we didnt need to use it anyway.
Review 92:Beautiful gardens, clean, quite, friendly staff. Close walk to Pizza Factory or David's Deli (open breakfast & lunch only), Subway
Review 93:The complementary breakfast selection doesn't have much variety.
Review 94:I like the curtesy call they gave me when I was running late to get to that area. Check-in and check-out very simple. The dog park is a very nice idea and completes the hotel especially when you bring your pet.
Review 95:I had to reset the digital clock several times because it interrupted itself over and over and blinked ever after its event. The clock is broken. I forgot to tell them at the desk.
Review 96:The garden was beautiful and the location was perfect for our access to the Mendocino film festable
Review 97:That we were next to the bbq area and the party of one of the guest went on till 11:00
Review 98:That we had a place to clean fish, but had to clean station first
Review 99:Breakfast was moderate quality packaged muffins & Wal-Mart (!!) cold cereals. No blackout drapes. Pets are allowed, need to specify a no pet room
Review 100:Nice flowers and gazebo in center of motel was a nicepace to visit with friends at the end of the day. Our 2 queen bed room was much larger than single king bedroom.
Review 101:- Spider in the bathroom - Power outlets were too loose to the point of not being usable - Price higher than average for this type of a room
Review 102:- Nice and comfortable room - Breakfast was okay
Review 103:The woman on staff is rude, the room didn't have air conditioning like it states on this website or a kitchen?? Probably wont choose this place again, honestly only picked it for the price and thought it would look nice from the pictures but its run down!
Review 104:Bathroom was small and shower was very small in size only 3x3 ft sq. Breakfast didn't offer much in way of hot food. Needs plastic bag for dirty clothes
Review 105:Price, room nicely remodeled, very clean inside and easily found from roadway. McDonald's restaurant across the street
Review 106:Not many places to eat in town.
Review 107:The greatest extra touch was outside the room was a shelf with Windex and paper towels which is so useful on such a scenic drive as this area! Thank you.
Review 108:Heater in room not working. I asked for help and they gave me a space heater, however they removed it from the room after 2 hours. Stepping out of the shower into a cold room- not good. Having 2 little people with me, without heat- not good.
Review 109:Friendly staff.
Review 110:Would have liked to see a better breakfast. Danish, cereal, coffee and juice was it. Pretty minor as our stay overall was great.
Review 111:motel was very pet friendly and the room was clean. Danishes and cereal for breakfast. Motel staff very friendly and overall great place to stay. We weren't banished to a nasty dirty room because we had our dog with us.
Review 112:Wifi slow, like many of the accommodations on the coast. Allow smoking outside the rooms so second hand smoke is an issue.
Review 113:Comfortable bed and decent size room
Review 114:The poor quality of the bedding. There was no fan in the bathroom. Breakfast set up on our day of departure was late, so we had to skip it as we had a 7:15am departure time.
Review 115:The gardens, picnic tables, and grills were a real plus for us.
Review 116:Staff wasn't very informative about the area. Very old accommodations. Sometimes you just can't get old clean. 11 days, 9 hotels, their's was the worst breakfast offering. We passed.
Review 117:The exterior was maintained nicely.
Review 118:WiFi was on the fritz both days we stayed here
Review 119:The cleanliness is extremely good at this hotel. Staff are very friendly. Expanded continental breakfast.
Review 120:I was surprised that the motel wasn't on the ocean side of the road. I misinterpreted: "ocean view from the gazebo". Rooms are described as "roomy" but I didn't find ours to be all that roomy. It was okay though.
Review 121:The motel was convenient for meeting our friends. The gardens are lovely and probably even more so in the summer. The young lady at the desk was kind enough to come to our room when we couldn't get the TV to work. She spent several minutes on it. I believe it was a problem with the outlet or the power strip.
Review 122:Did not have any complaints but breakfast was swerved too late in morning for me to get any.
Review 123:this is a basic motel, nothing fancy but fine for a nights stay. Quiet, bed was comfy. Had microwave and frig.
Review 124:Just the first room - really smelled of stale smoke. The walls are a bit thin.
Review 125:The first room I was given was supposed to be "non smoking" but it smelled REALLY bad. I went to the desk to ask for a new room and they were very nice and accommodated me. (I normally don't complain, but I was staying for three nights). Wi-Fi was good, location was great and it was clean enough. Good value for the price - I would stay here again.
Review 126:Breakfast is really meager - just cereal with the milk, apples, bananas, tea coffee and packaged oatmeal - no cooked food at all. We didn't find anything for a 3-year child who doesn't eat cereal. Never agree for the room 174 - the furthermost room (from the reception) - there is no network connectivity in the room at all - neither free wifi nor cellular.
Review 127:Really, nothing. We've paid around $100 a night, but it doesn't worth that money.
Review 128:I thought the location was perfect. Just a quick walk away from a grocery store and the best breakfast in town, David's. The motel was very clean and the gardens are well kept.
Review 129:Not the hotel's fault - storm caused blackout, so early to bed in pitch dark and cold water and no breakfast in the morning - asked whether there would be any price reduction, told if owner agreed it would be credited to our card - we shall see!
Review 130:Clean and comfortable room. Receptionist changed room to satisfy my requirements (pet free and quiet as possible) with no bother, meaning we got a free upgrade.
Review 131:Room looked a little tired. No wifi unless I went and sat in lobby. Was told the next day that they are planning on upgrading their system:(
Review 132:Quiet location away from road. Good pet area.
Review 133:Nothing...!
Review 134:Everything was as expected as seen on their website, a great value too! We didn't need a kitchen but there is a microwave and a refrigerator. We will stay here next time.
Review 135:Staff was very rude. Not just one but several. Desk help sat at computer eating an apple while I waited at desk for help. On our first morning the breakfast room was out of coffee bread/rolls and fruit 45mins befor it was support to close there was trash on all tables and trash container was over flowing onto floor. On our second morning we arrived early only to be inturrped by staff cleaning up (early) putting food away without asking if we wanted more. He also drug the mat from the counter across the floor and through it behind my chair. We also noticed 2 other people coming in to get coffee ( there wasn't any) felt like we were run out of office. Had another staff push in front of me to enter office she closed door in my face. Not sure if we will come back Which is to bad because we really liked our room.
Review 136:Room was clean and comfortable
