Reviews for Waikiki Gateway Hotel

Review 1:There were cockroaches all over the property and these would come out every night. We were told that this was common in Hawaii. The kitchenette was very small and there was no way any thing could be heated (leave alone cooked) as there was a cupboard just over a foot above it. The kitchenette itself was a metre away from the bed. This room could not have accommodated more than two people so it should not be given out to families. Absolutely underwhelming for the price charged. We checked-out on day two of our 9 day holiday as we managed to get a 3-star, one-bedroom apartment (with a full kitchen) on the beach for much less.

Review 2:Room clean is terrible always Because every day one or two amenity goods not refill. How pay for amenity fee $10/day? When my checking out one face towel was available stain they charge me $10!! Why need pay $10 for small face towel? So crazy this charge.

Review 3:The hotel is old in in dire need of updating. The bed was not comfortable & there was a stale smell in the bathroom.

Review 4:The staff was excellent...friendly & helpful. A special mention is given to the valet and the bellhops. They demonstrated the TRUE spirit of ALOHA. The location was perfect...right in the midst of the Waikiki strip.

Review 5:The rooms may need to replace their carpets. It seemed a bit old. Maybe the pillows could be a bit thicker. Otherwise not a bad place to stay.

Review 6:Friendly and helpful hotel staff. Great location- walking distance to and from Waikiki Beach, Hilton Village and Ala Moana. Also the Waikiki Trolley (Pink Line) stops right in front which makes it convenient to get to and from Ala Moana. Awesome cable TV (especially when you just want to chill in the room for a day.) Affordable breakfast buffet, not a wide selection but sufficient. They also accommodated for our request for an extra roll-away bed (at extra cost).

Review 7:This hotel is horribly maintain the rooms are horrific , old ,dark, and dirty. The air cond is the type hanging thru window. Noisie and kept us up all nite. Bathroom is even worse Mold everywhere Good thing we didn't spend much time in the room except for sweeping and even then with the Ac on, it was hard

Review 8:Great location

Review 9:Its a bit expensive but its about the going price for Honolulu and new year no problem

Review 10:The location was pretty good also liked the balcony and the veiw

Review 11:Room smelt musty. Older hotel, but was clean and neat. Paid a few 'hidden' and unannounced incidental fees when we arrived which seemed like a sting - e.g.: $10 fee for amenities (?)

Review 12:Location to Waikiki was good for price. Staff were friendly.

Review 13:Wifi wasn't great. Our flight out of Honolulu was at 10:30pm, and we couldn't use a room briefly before leaving the hotel. We still had to check out of the room by 11am. Previous hotels we have stayed at in Waikiki have let us use a room to shower before our long flight home. The bathroom was outdated, and shower didnt drain well. Air conditioning was very loud also.

Review 14:Most of the staff were friendly.

Review 15:Hotel very tired and badly in need of a refit. Rooms not quite clean; edges of floors and bathroom grubby Overall not good enough for the price.

Review 16:Good location

Review 17:The placement wasn't 100% ideal, but when is it ever? No real complaints.

Review 18:The staff was nice and helpful. The place wasn't too pricey for the quality of the room and services.

Review 19:Place is getting run down. Needs some TLC. Reception area is nice but the rooms, bathroom in the rooms need some fixing up. Some of the outdoor balconies need repairing. From outside some of them look like they are falling apart. Very busy road, noisey.

Review 20:Great staff. Handy location. Easy to walk to the beach with just going through a couple of parks.

Review 21:The rooms were musty. The bathroom was old, tired, peeling paint and mould marks on the ceiling. There was no head on the shower so water came out like a hose.

Review 22:The location was great. Very close to the beach and shopping area. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 23:The room's facilities are below average. We were completely shocked when we opened the door. It was like a motel. Forget about all the pictures they show on their website, they are all rendered pictures, not the real ones. The air conditioning is barely working and it produces a lot of noise. They do not have a curtain in the shower so when we take shower, water goes out to the floor a lot. (I am wondering why they cannot afford a cheap few dollar curtain while they can pay for a big screen TV?) And the worst of all is the smell. It smells terribly, probably because of all the carpets (inside and outside the rooms) which are ten year old without proper cleaning. We would rather pay more and stay in a better one if we knew this in advance.

Review 24:The staffs are really helpful. They response quickly and nicely. They have a fancy big screen TV though. It is relatively clean.

Review 25:The rooms were shocking our room and other members we travelled with had cockroaches.

Review 26:Located in a good area of Waikiki which was close to everything else.

Review 27:The smell of the rooms. One mattress needs replacing. Object to $10 service fee. Wifi is advertised as free! Breakfast buffet not appealing at all.

Review 28:Location great. Front staff helpful.

Review 29:Air conditioning seemed a bit strong even on low - although that is very minor.

Review 30:Very nice facility. Staff was helpful, pleasant, polite and addressed all our requests swiftly. Water fountain and recyclable water bottles were a very nice touch and a big reason to stay there again - a hotel that does as it preaches (to try to lower our human print on mother nature). The buffet was great as well.

Review 31:As we arrived late and left early the next morning for a flight to Hawaii island I could not understand the resort fee we paid as none of the facilities were available to us during the short night time we were there?

Review 32:Receptionist, room facility.

Review 33:The parking service was very good, people is always kind. Security Guard is very helpful. When my room facility broken, always the Security Guard helps check and assist to test. The bathtub sewage was broken when first enter into the room. And table lamp was not work. Toilet was leaking water and turned out noisy sound. One Asian look girl receptionist was not kind impatient with client question ask.

Review 34:They don't have microwave oven and water kettle in the room

Review 35:excellent location, close to all amenities, beach & reception are friendly and accommodating

Review 36:Is a little run down but ok for a one night stay

Review 37:Was walking distance to the beach. Good location. Nice restaurant over the road. Easy to catch shuttle bus to Ala Moana shopping centre.

Review 38:Staff are not really friendly and welcoming. She talked so fast when explained to me what I need to pay as if she didn't want me to understand but just sign the paper. The shower is stupid with only one button to adjust temperature, direction and strength of water.

Review 39:The room is spacious and clean.

Review 40:Valet staff was great especially David. Room location was not good. Requested to be in top floor. Price was so expensive for what the room was. Felt like a motel 6. Pool was ugly

Review 41:The wifi is very touch and go.

Review 42:Location was great. All staff on the property were very friendly throughout our stay. The room wasn't amazing (not dirty but certainly older/worn and daggy) but it is still good value for money in the area.

Review 43:Run down hotel with poor facilities, no internet in the room however advertised, no air- conditioning available. Additional charge for cleaning of the room that is added to the overall price of the room.

Review 44:We wish the rooms were a little more kid friendly. My kids were 6, 4 and 1 and I felt like I had to keep after them not to touch the glass mugs or the phone.

Review 45:The room was great, clean! Loved the wood floors! The staff was super friendly and very helpful!

Review 46:Great location, i walked everywhere. I had a corner deluxe room on the 16th floor, which was great. Staff were really friendly. Room was clean, bed was comfy. I had breakfast and lunch out of the ABC store right down stairs, which was really cheap.

Review 47:The pool should have a sign warning about the steep change in depth!

Review 48:Perfect location close to all the action in Waikiki, friendly staff and great value for money

Review 49:Room was clean. Location was great for tours as it was a pick-up point. It was about 4-5 blocks from beach, close to post office if there is a need to ship anything home. Pool was small, had laundry facilities. Staff knowledgable about tours and other local services.

Review 50:Requested and was promised king bed for my honeymoon. Was given 2 double beds. As a larger person, this was completely inappropriate and uncomfortable

Review 51:I stayed at this hotel 20 years ago and not one thing has changed - rooms are VERY dated and not particularly clean. Wouldn't stay here again!!

Review 52:Staff were super friendly and willing to assist with just about anything!

Review 53:We really enjoyed our stay here! The location was perfect (right on the strip and walking distance to the beach), staff were friendly and the service was great (complimentary beach towels, free upgrade to the penthouse!). We're definitely coming back the next time we're in Waikiki!

Review 54:Balconies are very small and not what we expected. Bathrooms are small but are clean.

Review 55:Very friendly staff, very clean and well kept, central location close to everything but far enough away from big noisy crowds. Having the ABC store downstairs was very handy!

Review 56:Although two balconies, no ocean view. Had to pay extra for water and beach towels.

Review 57:Beautiful lobby with wooden elephant sculptures and lovely aroma and waterfall on 4th floor. Very spacious kitchen area. Front desk personnel committed to helping as quickly as possible; very friendly.

Review 58:Everything in our room was old/dated, except for the TV. Water damage was evident on the ceiling and the mattresses were old and uncomfortable. I expected more for what we were paying.

Review 59:A short walk could get you to most places in Waikiki.

Review 60:Had to move room - 2nd not much better -very smelly and dirty ,bathroom was horrible couldn't use plug because it had rusted in plug hole

Review 61:reception staff pleasant and helpful

Review 62:The hidden cost when we went to check out that wasn't detailed when we booked. The price for breakfast was outrageous given the amount and quality of the food served.

Review 63:The staff were friendly

Review 64:If you need any info on where to eat at a reasonable rate , the night security man had some great tips. Front desk staff were always polite and helpful. Rooms were clean and spacious, although in the penthouse (free upgrade for 3 nights out of 4) external blinds would have cut back on the heat coming through the windows. We were extremely impressed with the service and location. The only complaint we had was they have terrible American coffee instead of the strong lattes we were used too and no teabags, the staff gave us herbal tea, but not the same, Aussies like things strong guys!!

Review 65:Flooring worn and smelled coming out of lift on our level. Air conditioner very noisy but worked ok. Beds very soft and worn. Staff didn't know enough about local opening times local shopping centres, busses ect. breakfast was aimed mainly at Asians not very American/ Hawaiian

Review 66:the staff were friendly. The room was clean and tidy. Close to Beach and great location for busses and short walk to centre of Waikiki

Review 67:Loved the views - our room was on the corner of the top floor with windows on two sides. The bed was very comfortable, and the staff refreshed the sheets and towels regularly. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

Review 68:Staffs are smiling at you but don't be cheated by the face. I found my car was hitted at bumper after one night parking by the parking boy. They tell me it's not caused by them and the front desk response the same when I ask. The answer by front desk was made at once, even no check on video records or with the parking lot. Please, I'm sure my car is perfect when give you the car key. Won't be there again.

Review 69:Compare the cheap price, the hotel and room are ok level. Location is not so bad, though a lot of one way road makes inconvenience

Review 70:A DEBATE TOOK PLACE BETWEEN STAFF AND US RE THE CLASS OF ROOM ..IT WAS WAY UNDER WHAT WE HAD ORIGINALLY PAID FOR ,,,BUT , TO THE CREDIT OF THE HOTEL , WE RECEIVED DUE REDUCTION OF FINAL PAYMENT

Review 71:GOOD STAFF ,,,GREAT BREAKFAT

Review 72:The bathroom was very bad, old plumbing and fixtures created problems. Our room shared plumbing with the ajoining room which created blockages. On three occasions we had to have the maintenance man come to unblock the drain. Also WIFI was only available in the lobby not in the room.

Review 73:The staff we're very friendly & polite

Review 74:wifi didn't work, very loud room, no fan in bathroom, on fifth floor although booked above tenth (when asked they said we got upgraded to a better room though)

Review 75:The rooms were quite old and worn. Paint peeling from bathroom ceiling. The safe didn't work and reception staff not too helpful. But security guy was really obliging.

Review 76:The location was great

Review 77:The concierge did not have very good information about local dining. She seems confused about the question. When in fact there was a great restaurant directly across the street.

Review 78:I undertand hotel is going through renovations/improvements. Whilst our room was comfortable, the only issue was the unclean feeling of the carpet. Wifi was intermittent. Breakfast could be improved with a wider variety of foods including cereals.

Review 79:Staff members were very helpful and friendly. Location was excellent.,

Review 80:Over-priced as most of the Waikiki hotel, seems to be built in the 60ties...the bathroom definitely has been kept since that tome

Review 81:good view from the room; good location within walking distance of Ala Moana Center and park

Review 82:The Gateway Waikiki is centralized, the view from our room amazing. Slept with curtains open and enjoyed city lights while falling asleep. We were able to hop on buses, shuttles, taxis and quite a few close by conveniences such as dining and shipping. Overall a perfect get away to relax, reconnect and recharge!

Review 83:There was a "hidden" charge. There is an amenity fee which they do not explain or point out when you register, just initial the boxes. It includes the Internet but the other stuff I did not and would not want. $10. Kind of cheap and sneaky. Bathroom was old and dated.

Review 84:Basic price and location was very good.

Review 85:The bathroom was extremely old and had no drainage. The bathroom needs to be redone ASAP! I wouldn't stay here again due the fact the pool closes at 8pm, and after shopping one night we got back to the room late and asked if the pool could stay open for another hour and the girl at front desk said No! Considering the shops close at 11pm... and Ala Moana which is 10 mins away closes at 7pm the pool should be open much later than 8pm!

Review 86:Hotel was in a great location, close to shops and food places. Great walking distant from the beach and main street. Buses and trolleys pick and drop you up directly out the front which was great when shopping! Room was clean, and tidy.

Review 87:didn't like the water dripping on the balcony from the floors above as I couldn't sit out there

Review 88:the location was easy access to everything but not in the guts of the tourist bit

Review 89:The price that we ended up paying was not the quoted price when we booked which was an unpleasant surprise Was quite a bit further from the beach than expected the air conditioning from the floor above leaked onto our balcony so we couldn't sit on it.

Review 90:Some of the staff were nice

Review 91:Very good location, nice atmosphere, excellent breakfast. I almost forgot from time to time that I was there for business and not for vacation. I definitely recommend this hotel.

Review 92:On the first night there was water leaking through the vent in the bathroom which they came to fix but it started again so in the end in the middle of the night we had to be moved to another room.

Review 93:Was in a great location and was really comfortable.

Review 94:Poor furnishings: two beds of different heights, only one plastic chair in a room for four people, old brown carpet, pipes visible through room...

Review 95:Staff was friendly

Review 96:No complaints - great value for money

Review 97:Clean hotel, great renovated rooms with a beautiful view, the staff were amazing and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel was around 5 to 10 minutes from the beach.

Review 98:Once the lock broke and I could not enter my room. It took two hours to solve. The Olohana street is sometimes noisy.

Review 99:Room spacious and clean. Good wifi, good services. Bus stations nearby.

Review 100:2 of 3 elevators were out of commission for two days during my stay, resulting in excessive waits for the elevators.

Review 101:Upgrade to penthouse, but air conditioning was insufficient

Review 102:More of a "hub" to keep all your stuff and sleep rather than a place to relax - very clean and nice rooms and lobby but the swimming pool is a little small and not good if you have a family with young children who prefer a pool to the ocean.

Review 103:Very convenient location close to shopping and the nicer beaches in Waikiki (sandy bottom ocean.) 10 Minute walk to the luxury strip and to bars & restaurants as well as the beach. Rooms were comfortable and had a nice appearance.

Review 104:Hotel is old and run down, small rooms ,dirty hallways, tiny bathroom with no exhaust fan and shower barely had any water pressure. Air Conditioner was very noisy and bed was squeaky and uncomfortable.

Review 105:Location was pretty good and most staff were friendly. Pretty decent TV .

Review 106:Noisy aircon and very noisy trafic on lower floors. Bathroom was very small and in poor condition.

Review 107:Price and convenience. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 108:Some days our dishes were done...some days our key card worked....some days all 3 lifts were working. Bench space was too small, very very noisy area with crossroads in all directions. No beach towel cards given until half way through the stay.

Review 109:The trolley buses would stop right outside the hotel

Review 110:Refrigerator doesn't really work well. It doesn't make food keep in cool and there was too much dew in it and it was disgusting to us. The cost was not the price that we expected. That charged 3rd person and amenities and it seems normal but when we booked from Booking.com, it didn't show up for the total cost. But if you really carefully look the website on Booking.com, it says it in tiny tiny sentences, so it freaked us out when we heard it at the hotel when we checked in. The room seems pretty old. The bath even looks older more than the room. If you would like to stay at neat hotel, I don't recommend, but if you don'r care or save your money, it might be good!

Review 111:I stayed at the hotel with my family (we are 4 in a family.) We stayed at the room that has 2 volconies, which is good to be there in the morning and the sunset time. Unfortunately we cannot see the sea from the room but still the view was good!

Review 112:Paid in advance on Booking.com and arrived to surprise charges for what they called "amenitie charges" for wi-fi, water, etc. I told staff that I was only there for one night and didnt care about wi-fi or even the water and they said charges are required whether I want it or not. Hmmmm. Also the elevators are extremely slow and with as busy at it was it took us forever to get up to our rooms or down to lobby or parking.

Review 113:Valet parking staff was excellent and friendly.

Review 114:The carpet in the rooms seemed dirty. The room smelled weird. The front desk staff were kind of rude.

Review 115:The location of the Hotel is good. Just a short walk to the beach. The security staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 116:Was a bit noisy but after all what else can you expect in the middle of the city.

Review 117:Staff were very friendly. We had a block drain and they came and fix it straight away. Awesome work guys.

Review 118:That the pool closed early but that's about it.

Review 119:Love the staff and the room service. The room was clean and the valet parking was on point. Also close to everything

Review 120:Bath tub looked dirty. Furniture had chipped pieces, looked like it was from the 1970's, poor lighting. Not enough receptacles to charge electronics. Hallways dingy and dirty, very small pool. Some in group complained their room smelled moldy.

Review 121:Staff was very nice. Location was good, walking distance to everything you need.

Review 122:1)there were a few hairs of the previous guest clogged up in the metal hardware for water drainage... while I stayed , it was never removed....I thought that was disgusting....2)Wifi didno't work in the room on the first day I stayed, the hotel staff fixed it and it worked for a while, but stopped working again..

Review 123:Location, staff

Review 124:The staff was very rude and no compliant. They did not book the appropriate room and stated that one of us would have to sleep on the floor. The room had mold and cochroaches. I will never come back and will never recommend to anyone.

Review 125:Nothing was available to me. I had a horrible experience.

Review 126:There was a smell emanating from the corridor. Slightly off-putting. Hotel rooms could do with a face lift.

Review 127:5 minute walk to Waikiki Beach. Friendly staff.

Review 128:Very noisy, busy roads on both sides of hotel so had to sleep with earplugs. It was a busy weekend in Waikiki so to be expected I guess....no wine glasses in room, only plastic tumblers, no tea bags only coffee for machine which was okay.

Review 129:the location was great, within walking distance of Waikiki beach and shopping. Hotel is older style so a bit dated. Staff were very friendly and helpful so great for our first visit to Honolulu.

Review 130:A room not big enough to swing a cat in. A small double bed that was too small to two adults. An airconditioner that was too loud and we had to keep turning off meaning we were constantly waking up overheated and so alternating between over hot and too noisy. Cupboard for clothes is in bathroom which was also very small. Couldn't wait to get out of room as it was making me feel sick. Would have been better off sleeping on a bench at airport for the night.

Review 131:The location was okay and the staff were okay

Review 132:Not clean, had compagny of several cockroaches, very load street, noisy airconditioning, very old bathroom..

Review 133:The location is the only good thing about this hotel.

the hotel is so old that the power is cut off twice after I used the hair dryer. The elevators are old and one of them was not working. The whole hotel is OLD. It's so not worth it

Review 135:房间还行,前台服务员也还行。the room is fine
