Reviews for The Avalon Hotel and Conference Center
Review 1:Put us in a room that ended up with no heat for 3 hours, Then my husband said something has to be wrong with the heat. He went downstairs to report it because the phone did not work. They came right up& moved us to another room. All was well, We got warm, but the hallways were very cold. Breakfast was ok, but could have had more of a variety of things!!
Review 2:Beds were comfy. Staff was very freindly& very accomdating to our situation.
Review 3:The breakfast room was not quite up to usual standards due to a large New Years Eve party...butno problem, it is usually quite adequate
Review 4:We were given a complimentary large suite when iur room was not ready..... Was a really great place to be in a snowstorm, overlookigvthe city!
Review 5:The property was extremely outdated, very poorly maintained. Carpets were dirty, sheets were threadbare, paint peeling, no hangers in the closet, dresser drawers falling apart....
Review 6:The staff was friendly and courteous.
Review 7:I didn't like the fact that I got a room with a messed up shower head and a view of a brick wall..then when switched to a different room it was way bigger with no fridge or microwave but the view was better it was nice though.
Review 8:I love the view of downtown erie.
Review 9:The feeling that there were better times for this hotel is a strong one. The breakfast is an experience you can perfectly live without.
Review 10:It looks quitte nice and elegant
Review 11:No hangers in the closet in my room
Review 12:Very friendly staff at check-in. The room we booked on the 6th floor was a little dated so I asked for another and was given a 7th floor room...very nice. Clean and good size bathroom. Amazing location to Erie Insurance Center where we attended a concert. helpful staff..very satisfied.
Review 13:We paid for an upgraded room and it was a disaster. The toilet ran constantly, the carpet hadn't been vacuumed, mattresses were sagging, the TV was ancient, and the hotel has stood still in time since 1995.
Review 14:It was the worse hotel we have stayed in and when we reported the conditions no ac really loud air handler, they did nothing, no adjustment to the bill. Horrible conditions and service.never stay here
Review 15:Inconsistent wifi. Quite noisy (area is near a fire dept and hospital). No ice. Terrible coffee.
Review 16:Lovely conference space. Free parking. Hot free breakfast
Review 17:the parking was limited, the elevator looked very dated & the carpeting in hallway appeared to be dated
Review 18:the breakfast was fantastic, the bed very comfortable ( and I am picky about that due to my disability), the furniture very nice & appears new.
Review 19:This hotel needs major upgrading. Had to park on the street overnight. Our sheets were dirty and only two towels in room. It serves it's purpose for an overnight trip.
Review 20:Room needs complete make over. Old, inherent smell; not horrible but unpleasant. Drains were slow and fixtures throughout room were worn, damaged or outdated. Beds and pillows were old and not so great.
Review 21:Great location and ground level. Staff was great
Review 22:The room was not very clean and the scrambled eggs for breakfast the first day were mixed with a gray discoloration that was not appetizing.
Review 23:The cost and location not far from the Bayfront Conference Center
Review 24:No heat because of being in summer mode (it was in the 50's all day!), interior desperately needs updated, pillows and bed were uncomfortable, walls and doors were paper thin, breakfast food wasn't good and the coffee was lukewarm, and there were several really loud guests roaming the halls at 3 a.m.
Review 25:Location was fine, staff seemed nice.
Review 26:door keys did not work. Elevators very very slow, and had to share with cleaning crew. Very difficult to find stairs to avoid elevator
Review 27:It looked nice in lobby
Review 28:Our only complaint was that the AC did not work well enough. Our room temperature never dropped below 77, which is a little too warm for our liking.
Review 29:We thought the room was very nice and the bed comfortable.
Review 30:The elevator was broken .... tried 3 times and finally located an employee for help. The room decor was 1950's and there was a horrible odor of possible mouthwash the second the door was opened and continued throughout our stay
Review 31:The staff and breakfast was very good
Review 32:This hotel really needs to be updated! It's dark colors, floral bedspread & curtains, and tv all scream 90's. That's not what I expect from a hotel in 2015 (especially when we paid $90). Also, the wallpaper is coming off some of the walls in some spots.
Review 33:The bed was comfortable.
Review 34:I had to ruin down stairs a few time because me keys didn't work. They have a parking garage witch is a plus butt it only fits 50 cars if you done get a spot you have to park down the street. Are sheets had blood stains on the comforter they obviously didn't put clean sheets on the bed with to me is disgusting.
Review 35:I liked the beds they were comfortable
Review 36:Was dissapointed with the hair dryer in our room didn't work and we did not have an ice bucket in our room. The staff did not know where to find us an ice bucket so they gave us ice in a plastic bag.
Review 37:Breakfast was nice.
Review 38:The TV didn't have many channels and there was no options for pay per view. The bathtub looked dirty.
Review 39:Rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly and professional.
Review 40:the garage is grungy
Review 41:its okay--far better than the negative reviews would indicate. its a middle aged ,slightly faded hotel--clean, acceptable. not the ritz, but certainly not a flop house.
Review 42:Our room itself was clean but dismal. It was very dark even with the lights on, and the plumbing didn't work well. The toilet didn't flush without coaxing, and the shower head was unusable- it sprayed from a joint all over the bathroom. It seemed the hotel was aging (which is not a bad thing), but not necessarily gracefully. Needed lots of little fixes/updates.
Review 43:Hotel was clean, I liked that there was parking, and breakfast was decent. Staff was friendly. We might stay again, if we had a better room.
Review 44:When we were checking in tiles fell from ceiling due to water leak I guess but they didn't say !
Review 45:Rooms were nice very spacious! Employees were nice !
Review 46:ac did not work, super loud could hear outside noise, bathroom had mold. Staff did not seem to care when issues were addressed. Looks like they started to update and just stopped. Ceiling was crumbling.
Review 47:Nothing
Review 48:Air conditioning not working for the first 3 hrs in 87 degree weather. Ice machine not working on 6th floor
Review 49:great location, good breakfast, nice staff, decent room
Review 50:The building is in need of serious updates. Lights in bedroom didn't work, toliet running, stains all over carpets and windows. Furniture beat up, AC didn't work and the air filters look like they have never been changed. Gym has old equipment and the parking garage is a perfect site to dump a dead body.
Review 51:Front desk person was professional
Review 52:Breakfast was impressively terrible (it's like they were trying, I've never had breakfast that bad) and the breakfast staff were by far the worst part. On the first morning of my stay an angry, disenchanted looking middle aged lady loudly and with disgust plopped the overcooked scrambled eggs into the steamer base and walked away looking very much like she hated her job and everyone in the room. On the second morning a different middle aged woman loudly complained in front of everyone, so that everyone could hear, at how disgusted she was that we couldn't even separate the trash from the dishes. It created a very uncomfortable atmosphere, she practically patrolled the dirty dish tote after that. On that same morning we were served old, nasty, flabby, cold ham, and after trying to down a slice I gave it up and went for the rock-hard waffle on my plate. Putting it in my mouth and crunching down on the powder-dry mass of old stale off-brand freezer-waffle I literally choked and spat it out. And I love waffles. I think my "oh god" must have been audible because the dirty-dishes-patrol lady came over and prompted me snidely, "is everything ok sir?" It felt very much like she was daring me to complain. "It's fine." I replied.
Review 53:Front desk was very polite and attentive.
Review 54:Parking lot was hidden. Two elevators and no sign for steps. Room was big, but the bathroom was filthy with hair and mold growing on the ceiling and the grout. Wall outlets and coffee maker did not work. For the Price and location, I would NOT recommend this Hotel, nor would I stay here again.
Review 55:continental breakfast
Review 56:Entire place needs major upgrade. Lobby(dull/nothing to it). Elevators(vry old school). Rooms(wallpaper old/ peeling off at several locations). Lighting in garage should be much brighter.
Review 57:Location. Near restaurants&nightlife.
Review 58:Tired, old hotel with no security other than the lock on the individual room doors. Lack of safe, secure parking. Guy at the front desk seemed annoyed to be there. Deep sighs at any questions.
Review 59:Clean sheets.
Review 60:The bathroom had mold in it, the room wasn't cleaned after we spent the nite nor any of the beds maid. The man at the desk got smart, they don't have a pool I found out after being there a day n a half they can give you a free pass to the ywca across the street. I wouldn't have cared about the pool if I did have my 3 young children. Breakfast could have been better n the bar open at nite for guest
Review 61:The beds were very comfortable. The manager did his best to fix our problems. He could have took a lil more off the bill tho.
Review 62:The hotel is very outdated. Some of the staff were helpful while others were just rude. The location is terrifying.
Review 63:The room was cheap and clean. The bed was super comfy.
Review 64:The one chair in the room was not safe ie. the back did not stay up and had to be propped against the wall. There were no glasses or cups in the room.
Review 65:Size of the room.
Review 66:Tub didn't drain, no mattress cover under sheet, wall paper peeling. Room was HUGE, too HUGE in fact.
Review 67:Location and price were good, lots of people in hotel
Review 68:The place was clean, rooms had decent furniture but could use a little interior design. Bath had a little mold in the calk but was minor and was clean out side of that.
Review 69:Staff was friendly.
Review 70:We only had enough towels for one person for a family of 4, the staff was awesome in getting us towels in a timely manner.
Review 71:The hotel was very nice, clean and a very helpful staff.
Review 72:The parking lot is not very appealing and seems a bit shady, but is perfectly save. The front side of the hotel is not so attractive either, but everything worked out fantastic as soon as we got inside.
Review 73:It is a very pretty hotel with a chique entree. The room was very spacious, clean and pretty. We absolutely loved our room. The staff was very nice and breakfast was good. We also enjoyed the town Erie and had a nice dinner at Cloud9 nearby the hotel. It is a kind of hip, diverse city. We would definitely recommend the hotel. As for things to do we would recommend Niagra Falls and Eternal Flame Falls.
Review 74:Breakfast staff a little rude.... Parking garage is small but well lit. Our fridge was boken but there was a small beverage cooler
Review 75:Nite manager was awesome as was the man that took over in the am... House keeping staff also friendly... Huge rooms
Review 76:hotel is older and badly needs updates. they are trying to make them. With the discounted price It was a fair value at 103.
Review 77:Hotel Manager Nate was helpful and answered our questions.
Review 78:Our WIFI on the 6th floor kept cutting out and was never fixed.
Review 79:The location was in walking distance to a lot of restaurants and bars. Hotel staff were great and all was nice and clean. Breakfast was great on the weekends.
Review 80:The area is not the best. Heard sirens all night and people screaming outside. The garage doesn't have many spaces. It was full at night. I had to call front desk to ask where I could park. Room very basic. Paper cups smelled funny. Not enough towels. No clock in room. No hair dryer.
Review 81:The price was good. Lobby pretty. Room clean. Just needs updates made to it.
Review 82:*4.30 am fight in room next door with police on the premisses to remove the man and woman. *Extremely noisy airconditioner without much cooling *No elevator from parking garage to lobby *Handicapped spaces flooded
Review 83:Leaving after a sleepless night.
Review 84:Staff were good, management mainly the lady named norma were terrible. did not deal with the issues. fridge in room had mold, went down to front desk, the attendant apologized then handed me wipes to clean the fridge. got ready for bed turn down r the blankets, dried blood on the sheets. called the front desk, the attendant come to my room for proof. moved me to another room, no help was offered to help move my items. my second day i returned from a great day of shopping and a bag of dirty laundry was left in my room. there is much more but you get the drift. really think twice before booking at this hotel
Review 85:Old and need a major remodeling. Lobby was dirty and not even vacuumed carpets. Room was equipped with old TV, old and noisy AC
Review 86:Price was very good for one night stay
Review 87:Bathroom sink was clogged. Took 15 minutes to drain. No sitting chair in room. The orange juice actually tasted like Tang! The garage area was wet, musty and it looked as though there was a black mold on the ceiling of the garage due to the dampness. Just Nasty....
Review 88:It's a beautiful hotel inside. Needs to be updated.
Review 89:Ice machines weren't working one night. The toilet and tub didn't look as clean as I'd like but they weren't awful by any means. The tub was so so so clogged that the water was well above ankle level when finished. There was still coffee in the pot from the previous guest.
Review 90:The walkability to awesome restaurants and bars as well as to the lake. Easy drive to Presque Isle. The price I payed per night was so cheap and was the deciding factor in purchasing. The staff was so nice and really helpful. The weekend breakfasts were really good.
Review 91:Breakfast was extremely limited, Libya attendant was short with us and never smiled, carpet had huge black stains, no fridge in room
Review 92:Lobby is very pretty, decent showers, wifi, closeness to bars and baseball
Review 93:The entrance from the parking garage to the hotel was flooded during our entire stay and it smelled like sewage. The shower didn't drain well and accumulated water quickly. The hotel was pretty tired- things need updating for sure. The staff were all friendly but we wouldn't stay there again.
Review 94:Continental breakfast arrangement is poor and serve only waffle. You have to line up for 10minutes for your turn to make waffle. The breakfast table is basically empty not even bread at 8:00am.
Review 95:The restaurant was closed and the underground parking was wet and a little frightening. Without any conventions or meetings, it seemed to be on the verge of closing or abandoned.
Review 96:It was quiet and provided the basics for a place to stay, reasonably priced compared to other area hotels.
Review 97:Breakfast was included making stay a good value but I went late and hotel had no staff to replenish buffet and clean tables between guests
Review 98:Fun to be in heart of town with many restaurants in walking distance and rooms were clean with comfortable beds. It is on busy street though so big city noises and sirens can be disconcerting. Ask for inside room.
Review 99:When we arrived and went up to our room. The hall way had no lights and our room did not have electricity. They were having some issues and inside of 15 minutes, we had the electricity. The room was so large, the three lights did not light up the whole room. My husband had to move a light to the other side of the room in order to have a little light in which to read. The sheets were rough and the bed was not very comfortable.
Review 100:We had a very large room, at least double the size of a regular hotel room. It was clean. The location was very near the Erie Insurance arena.
Review 101:Parking garage was old, poor lighting, and didn't feel safe. Hotel was aged on the outside and the breakfast was nothing more than some fruit.
Review 102:Room was clean and hotem was close to the water.
Review 103:Area is BAD, absolutely no security (anyone can park in garage and take elevator into hotel), no one ever at front desk, my sheets had stains on them... I felt unsafe my entire stay.
Review 104:The rooms were clean
Review 105:the hotel was very nice,it had a great bar, the room was clean older but clean, the parking in the basement was great for our motorcycles and the staff was great expecially Daine at front desk.
Review 106:the bathroom tile old and missing. The beds were small. The breakfast was terrible no waffles no fresh fruit. The paint chipping. The parking spaces cars were using two spaces. The parking deck held water that was sitting that we had to walk in to enter the building.
Review 107:The location. Thee white bed spreads.
Review 108:We were given a room that had not been cleaned. Had to get a new room. Very dated, very very thin walls, my bed was moving because of the crazy couple in the next room slamming the bed against the wall for over an hour (via grade stud?!)
Review 109:Dan was very nice at the front desk and very apologetic about the issues we had.
Review 110:I don't think there was nothing i didn't like.
Review 111:I liked that the hotel was conviently down town by stores, baseball field. And the room was huge for the small price we paid. I really enjoyed being there.
Review 112:Hair dryer did not work. Breakfast was very standard nothing special
Review 113:Price bookings.com was able to give me the room for and location for me was very very close
Review 114:The parking lot. Going downy car scraped against the bottom!
Review 115:The hotel parking lot is creepy lol. But the hotel is beautiful! Great price! Very clean. The staff were just amazing. Will definitely be going there again!!!
Review 116:The towels were like sandpaper and the "bath" towel could probably cover a toddler. Definitely not large enough for an adult. Regardless, using the towels was terrible because of their scratchy texture. We ended up purchasing some from the Dollar General down the street.
Review 117:The woman at the front desk was amazing! Very bright, helpful, and friendly.
Review 118:There were noticeable water damage to parts of our room, the sitting area didn't make sense since there was no second TV in the room the furniture to be pointed at, so they pointed towards a peice of furniture that should have had a TV in it but instead had a bowl of rocks and fake flowers. They also turn off the heat and turned on ac . Just because it's May doesn't mean it's warm in Erie our room was freezing and there was nothing we could do about it. Also, no bar at location, no restaurant, and the court yard was beautiful but we could not access it, it was closed to the public.
Review 119:I loved the bedding it was clean and comfy. The location was great, close to bars and restaurants.
Review 120:One elevator was broke so wait time was long between each trip up anddown , could not find stairs , not clearly marked but there kindnessthere over powered that
Review 121:The group I was with , all the house keepers on any floor I went was allpleasant ,and most spoke with a greeting.
Review 122:Only one working elevator. New safes in room but staff had no clue how to work them so they could be used by guests. Facilities were very outdated and worn. Bed pillows were terrible. Won't ever stay there again.
Review 123:Beds were uncomfortable. ..long wait for requests( extra towels, new sheets..). Can hear everything that's going on out side as if it were inside.
Review 124:Parking was free
Review 125:I went to 4 different floors trying to get ice from an ice machine. ALL 4 were completely out of ice. My main dislike, though, would be the BED BUGS. I only stayed one night there, but then the next day discovered numberous trails and clusters of bed bug bites on my body. I understand that any hotel can get them, but even when I called to report it & make the hotel aware it still seemed like nothing will be done. Unacceptable!
Review 126:Location
Review 127:water takes ten minutes running to get hot water. 2 towels for 4 people. Very cold air coming through window.
Review 128:Pillows and bed were fairly comfortable k
Review 129:A stripped down king sized bedroom. Had to ask for a chair, only two pillows, no pictures on the walls. It looked unfinished. We expected one easy chair and 2 would have been better!
Review 130:Nearness to Warner Theatre.
Review 131:the morning breakfast was thin. there were two weddings, the reception could be heard all the way up on the 7th floor...annoying. got to Benjamins at 11 was hoping for late dinner, not available.
Review 132:the room was large, the bed quite comfortable. the staff very nice
Review 133:The room left a lot to be desired. There was water damage and chipping paint on the ceiling. All the lights were dim, yellowed, and hummed loudly. The "extra" blanket provided looked like it was about 15 years old- pilly and discolored. The television was an antique. When we checked in there was very little toilet paper in the room- both rolls were almost gone. The plastic in the floor of the tub was cracked. The basement parking garage was not secure, anyone could get down there/ park/ potentially break into or vandalize cars. Overall, just a super overrated place that needs a major facelift.
Review 134:The staff was friendly and the view was nice. Location was also convenient. Parking was easy. Towels were brought up within a half hour.
Review 135:And I love it every time!!! Friendly staff, clean room!!! Staff showed up and kicked the rowdy youngsters out of the hallway that were causing a raukus!!!
Review 136:When I arrived even though I had a confirmed reservation I was told they were sold out. Then they found me a suite, I get to my room and it is a queen room under renovation. The AC wasn't working and parts for it were scattered around the room. The ceiling was dis colored and peeling and chipping away in the bathroom. There was mold in the shower too.
Review 137:The location was good
Review 138:Very old and tired facilities. Ripe for demolition. Lifts were very old and in poor condition. Decor was awful. Looked dirty.
Review 139:Location is easy to find and close to restaurants.
Review 140:The breakfast was ok, but it could be a goal to improve it by adding scrambled eggs and a juice machine, including apple juice. See how to simply add a couple more items to complimentary breakfast.
Review 141:I liked the staff, helping with a problem until it was solved to my satisfaction. The key didn't work. I liked the larger size of the hotel rooms.
