Reviews for Hippo Hollow Country Estate
Review 1:Amenities are a bit run down, things need sprucing up a little. Disappointed with the state of swimming pool, water wasn't always clean, could do with manicured gaderns. This place has potential but maybe for a 3* I am expecting too much. In the food front, perhaps the chef could be a bit adventurous with their meals! Desserts were basic, in some case tinned in the case of fruits. Breakfast is the highlight of my day but instead I preferred eating out. General meals were a let downer however compensated by excellent friendly and helpful staff. Suitable for overnight stays.
Review 2:Location is just unbelievably stunning. We were a a clan of 7 with my parents and 2adult daughters and we stayed in beautiful rondavel chalets by the river! Every morning and evening we were treated to a stunning scenery of hippopotamus swimming up or down the river, beautiful sunrise and sunsets! Excellent location. Excellent management and staff.
Review 3:The service at dinner was not punctual and we had to wait for a long time for meals. The lady at reception was rude I would not recommend the resort to family and friends. I received average service
Review 4:I had to call in and enquire why linen was not changed and was dirty on third day- blankets and towels were not packed by the cleaning ladies. The buffet dinner was terrible, a La carte were well cooked. The room upstairs had the tatch roof peeling off and insects falling off on to the bed and the room had no fan and was unbearable. Beautiful setting but mediocre service- not to be repeated again
Review 5:None
Review 6:The staff was professional they all greeted us with a smile and made sure we are comfortable, the lady who welcomed us on arrival is the best I forgot her name
Review 7:The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. It took 3 people to finally attend to our breakfast needs. We were never given confirmation of our boma dinner reservation. The choice of food for breakfast and dinner was disappointing. The eating area was unclean and we had to constantly ask for service.
Review 8:We stayed in a River Cabin which provided a beautiful view of the elephants across the river.
Review 9:The room was quite dated and dark. The hotel is clearly geared up for large tour groups and lacks charm
Review 10:Nice location for an overnight stop. Our room was quiet and clean with a nice verandah overlooking the river
Review 11:It would have been nice to be able to get a bigger room that could accommodate my whole family rather than having to split us into two rooms.
Review 12:The location was good. Good views next to the river and the proximity to restaurants and other facilities was convenient.
Review 13:We travelled with our 11 year old grandson and he was very disappointed that we did not see hippos. Nothing you could have done to change that!
Review 14:Everything was great! Just wish we had more time available and will make sure we do if we visit the area again.
Review 15:We arrived in the evening to find no booking (hotels's system mistake) the standard room not very good so moved to the Garden chalets. Our booking mixed up with another guest, rather worrying no compensation offered
Review 16:Location, nice pool area, very good breakfast.Pleasant, helpful staff
Review 17:Spiders in my bed and shower.
Review 18:Everyone was nice except 1 receptionist. I like how trustworthy the hotel was. I left my bags in the car all day and it was "safe" didn't get broken in to. They also had a to go breakfast for my safari.
Review 19:The friendliness of the staff, the ease of booking and taking excursions, the restaurant, the facilities. The breakfast pack when we went out early and would miss breakfast.
Review 20:I found the bed not very comfy but everyone else was fine.
Review 21:Staff very friendly & helpful. Ease of booking day trips. Had an early start (5.30am) for a safari and hotel packed a breakfast bag for everyone. Seeing hippos, crocodile, elephants and monkeys from our room & the Restuarant was fabulous! Breakfast buffet really good, eggs cooked to order.

Review 75:Room assistant was found going through my belongings. Rooms need an upgrade.
Review 76:Setting, food is excellent. Hippo's were very active.Good value.
Review 77:The food was not that good.
Review 78:The Accomodation
Review 79:We had a dinner there, which was not good at all, and quite pricey.
Review 80:Beautiful setting, with our chalet overlooking the Sabie river. Very comfortable accommodation.
Review 81:In room 70 too much noise from car park early in the morning, bus full of tourist leaving early. Drinks VERY expensive for local residents, reasonable for overseas visitors due to exchange rates.
Review 82:Location to Kruger Park
Review 83:The little hut was just 'ok'. The location in general was poor, next to a main road on the outskirts of hazyview, there wasn't really anything to do/see without paying for it through the local 'information' desk.
Review 84:Seeing hippos next to the river. The food was not bad. The restaurant manager dealt with a complaint about a badly cooked meal very well.
Review 85:Our stay at the Lodge was very pleasant. The dinners were exceptionally good but not the breakfasts. Some staff were very friendly and others attended to their work with no enthusiasm. We handed in all relevant forms which we trust Hippo Hollow will take note of. Thank you.
Review 86:The attitude of the staff was less than desirable. After a late dinnerat 8.30 we were relaxing at the bar having only our second drink whenthe bar person informed us that the bar was closing at 10 pm. Thesituation only changed when the manager was informed and promptly over-ruled the bar keeper who it seemed fancied an early night. There wereabout 6 to 8 other middle aged travellers in the bar at the timeincluding several from a tour party who were residents. The followingnight with a different bar man, it did stay open until about 11.30,however the last hour was spent with most of the other staff waitingwith their coats on for everyone to drink up so they could go home! Thehotel itself is in a great situation and could be so good. But it seemsto lack investment. The chalets whilst sizable are very tired in theirdecor and fittings, have no tv, and more importantly no phone, whichwhen you are several hundred metres from reception is important, as itis a fair old walk to ask for information from reception.
Review 87:The location is great, and although we didn't see any hippos there,an 8ft croc came out to bask on the river bank on our last morning.
Review 88:The facilities do not cater for cold winter evenings. The atmosphere in the pub and dining area could be enhanced with back ground music, log fires, heaters. The staff need to be more helpful in helping in guiding guests to what's to do in the area and be up to date on times, bookings etc. The rooms could do with a fire place or bigger heater system as it lacked a "cosy" feel. Options to have your breakfast on your own balcony at the chalet on the river would be a great addition as it is such a great and romantic setting but we felt we could not use it to its full potential due to the above mentioned.
Review 89:Loved the setting and our chalet in the river was amazing. It is close to the main recreational booking centre literally up the road and pretty central to most activities, sites and the Kruger park. The Shangaan show was stunning and cultural. Staff were friendly.
Review 90:Attitude of management towards accepting amex card , no guest amenetiesother than soap, price increase of 30% during our stay withounotification on 1/1/2013, breakfast buffet poor, ice machinebroken and no management thereof, did not meet any senior staff.

Review 92:1. When we arrived our bed had rat mist on it2. the services was extremely slow 3. the one room our aircon did not work and there were no towles avvailable for the swimming pool. we also did not have towels in our room 4. I just did not think that it was up to scratch for a 4/5 star hotel
Review 93:I liked the venue and surounding areas
Review 94:Went to the African show / Boma, thought it was too expensive and the food was not very good.
Review 95:A bit dated, but nice.
