Reviews for The Pines Inn
Review 1:The staff was amazing! Every request was immediately taken care of. The staff made you feel very welcome. The location of the hotel was very convenient. The beds were super comfortable and the hotel was nice and warm.
Review 2:Misrepresentation on the website. Stated there was a restaurant and bar, upon arriving found out it was closed. Was told it may open in two weeks, after talking to some locals , this has been the story for several months. Small cramped bathroom. Needs cosmetic upgrading.
Review 3:Walking distance to town.
Review 4:We were there during low season, yet no personnel was on the premises. Because of this we couldn't drop off our luggage before 3 pm (check-in time) and facilities weren't available.
Review 5:jacuzzi
Review 6:more shelf space in bathroom would be nice. Perhaps an elevator someday? - i am handicapped, but am able to do stairs, but i couldn't help thinking of those who are not as able... coffee in room would've been nice
Review 7:tempur-pedic mattress was awesome, slept great, really appreciated that the windows opened - we like it cold to sleep (but not from an AC cold) Clean, comfortable, but weird closet config...
Review 8:Dirty towel in the bathroom, windows didn't shut completely, bathroom was very cold, needed to ask for ice and coffee was only available in the morning.
Review 9:Loved the mattress and the hot tub.
Review 10:A little tight in the configuration of the bathroom in the particular room I was in.
Review 11:Excellent location. Friendly and helpful staff. Homey atmosphere. Comfortable bed. A great place to relax.
Review 12:Room needed to be vacuumed under the bed. No in room wifi; only could access from the common area downstairs.
Review 13:Close to downtown,,quiet and rustic setting in main area with a living room and onsite restaurant.
Review 14:Rather pricey for mid week off season, wifi in lobby only, though I was able to connect in my room.
Review 15:Charming historic building and rooms, friendly helpful staff, free parking.
Review 16:no smoke detectors, no fire escape routes on doors, not handicap accessible, no closed captioning on TV, no elevators, one pillow was filthy, only one washcloth, no security locks on room doors, no air conditioning
Review 17:hard to say
Review 18:Can't think of anything we didn't like here.
Review 19:Staff (owners?) were very nice and helpful. Saw us with a small cooler and offered to fill it with ice. The hotel was in great condition. Very clean and neat. Nice jacuzzi and fitness/game room. Bed was super comfortable. We enjoy old buildings and this place still has much of the original 100 plus year old features. We would stay here again.
Review 20:The hotel is incredibly tired- probably lovely in it's day, but that day is long over!
Review 21:Two blocks away from the town of Lake Placid and Mirror Lake.
Review 22:No WiFi quite noisy on the weekends. No continental breakfast. No vending machines or store for drinks or snacks.
Review 23:The cleanliness. The people. The beds are comfortable
Review 24:N/a
Review 25:We appreciated the feeling of staying at a friend's place versus a hotel. Jill was so welcoming and very friendly. There was a personal touch you don't typically get with a larger chain hotel.
Review 26:In-room wifi would have been nice. Room could have used some minor cosmetic improvements.
Review 27:Staff was very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Bed was very comfortable.
Review 28:The 14 stairs to get to the first floor and registration desk and the lack of an elevator to the other floors.
Review 29:The Pines Inn is a restored hotel with a yesteryear charm. Lots of burnished wood, a quiet parlor, a covered outdoor patio, a friendly, enthusiastic proprietor who gave us many suggestions of where to eat, what to see, etc. There is also a German restaurant open on Fridays and Saturdays.
Review 30:I just wish there were coffee makers in the rooms. I'm a very early riser, and enjoy coffee when I wake. Coffee is available but not until I'm already off and running.
Review 31:Whenever I'm in Lake Placid I always stay at the Pines Inn. Innkeepers are the best, Location is perfect, parking, and quiet.
Review 32:Not bike friendly...We had to store our VERY VALUABLE BIKES in a musty walkin basement.
Review 33:The smell was very musty...The music was incredibly annoying especially if you wanted to work using the wifi. They had a nice spacious living area but cranked the polka music so loud it was not usable
Review 34:We were very disappointed. Very run down. could be beautiful if some money was spent on basic updates like new carpet and paint. For $143.00 didn't expect carpet hanging off the stairs and papering curling up on the walls. Not sure how they handle Handicaps. No elevator.
Review 35:Historic building. Jill was very friendly. Appeared she needed to be a "Jack of all trades" reception and also Bartender
Review 36:The room we had really needed a good cleaning. Large amounts of dust under the bed and on the baseboards behind the bed.
Review 37:Great location and good room size
Review 38:We would have liked to be on a higher floor but because of no elevator it would have been difficult to get our luggage up to the 5th floor.
Review 39:Staff was excellent
Review 40:No coffee maker in the room. And no coffee available until 0730 in the morning. I was up at 0400 and I left at 0600 to go hike. They should have coffee available 24/7 or coffee makers in the room. Only hot water was available and fortunately I travel with my own coffee. Also the bathroom was cramped to walk to the toilet. The sink to the tub wall left a mere 10-12 inches to squeeze through, and I am considered slender. But this having to slide through sideways to use the toilet or wash your hands was not acceptable to me. A smaller sink to make the space larger would have made sense. Or move the sink over more, because you can not move the wall from the tub.
Review 41:Nice old historic place. Friendly staff.
Review 42:Old tooth paste on the walls on the bathroom walls and the overhead light did not work in the bathroom. Bed was very comfortable.
Review 43:That the room was available. I was glad we were on the first floor. the staff could not be nicer!
Review 44:I did not have a bad experience; however, it would be nice if they had a continental breakfast to go along with the great coffee.
Review 45:The owners of The Pines are friendly and very nice people. They truly care about their guests. When things do not work - they repair them immediately. Coffee very good. Always had suggestions as what landmarks were good to visit. Great fish dinner on Fridays.
Review 46:Laking in ambiance and amenities if that is your thing. A little bit Victorian feeling with the older building.
Review 47:Good if you just need a basic place to stay. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Location is a short walk down hill into the down town area. We left the car in the lot and just walked up and down the hill to the main street with shopping and restaurants. So if you are just looking for a place to sleep that is clean, a decent price and with friendly staff this is a good place for you.
Review 48:Could have used a few amenities. IE coffee maker in the room, hair dryer, refrigerator. Also there was a restaurant and lounge that was apparently open only on weekends.
Review 49:The owner was great she was very pleasant and helpful.
Review 50:The staff at The Pines was friendly and helpful. The building was old, but charming, and the location was ideal for walking into town. I would stay here again.
Review 51:We spent each day hiking, and sure would have appreciated an elevator to get up to our room at the end of the day! Not a deal breaker, though.
Review 52:Location is very convenient. Just far enough off the main street so the rates are reasonable. Room was tastefully decorated, bed was very comfortable. The facility had a definite European "feel", and could easily be used as a movie set for a film set in mid-20th century Austria or Switzerland. Each room that we saw was different, each with it's own personality. Being an older building, with a full house (No Vacancy sign) it may tend to get a bit noisy. No problem during our stay as area was just recovering from Ironman Weekend, and there were few quests in hotel.
Review 53:I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work on my tablet (not sure why), would've liked access to breakfast and dinner, the restaurant was closed.
Review 54:I enjoyed the conversations with Jill, the pool table, the location and the cleanliness
Review 55:Short walk to busy downtown location, so we were close, but not in the thick of it. Price was reasonable and clean. Staff, very friendly and interested in making your stay enjoyable. And every weekend they serve Oktoberfest! That should be in their details. We were surprised and loved it. We were going to plan on where to eat downtown, but instead returned to our hotel. Better that way, then no need to drive after drinking at dinner. Safe and yummy!
Review 56:I didn't like that there were so many steps to climb. Also, the knob on the bathtub to make the water go thru the bathtub faucet rather than thru the showerhead--didn't work.
Review 57:I liked the price and the air conditioner.
Review 58:Location was great! Easy walk into "downtown" lake placid. Had all necessities for hikers looking for a hot shower after getting off the trail. In short, great place to rest your head.
Review 59:Lack of wifi in the room was a huge problem for me. Maybe I missed this in the write-up before I booked, but wifi should be tablestakes in this day and age. I also was under the impression that dinner was available...it is, but only on Friday and Saturday nights. I hadn't planned on having to go out all of the time.
Review 60:Location was awesome. Staff - especially Jill - was excellent in making suggestions for hikes and places to eat.
Review 61:Only suggestion would be to change the name of the pub/restaurant from Duncan (Scottish) to something more in line with the German theme.
Review 62:Lovely Inn with very nice older style parlor with fireplace and plenty of comfortable seating (great reading room). The staff was very friendly and the hotel was very clean. Best hotel for the price in the area.
Review 63:There's nothing I don't like about this place! It's a great value for the money
Review 64:I love the bed and breakfast feel even though it's really a hotel. The beds and pillows are the coziest in town and the staff is so very nice!
Review 65:Too many stairs to my room (elevator for housekeeping staff only
Review 66:Very homey atmosphere with a large comfortable room - clean & comfy bed. I really loved my room. Housekeeping person was super friendly but overworked. The free coffee was excellent! Even though there was surface dust, I did not feel it effected my stay.
Review 67:I thought I reserved two double beds for the three of us when I made my reservation at Booking.com, but when we checked in we received a king size bed for me and two teenagers. When I asked for a room with double beds like I thought I was receiving I was told everything was sold out. Very disappointing experience.
Review 68:Nothing.
Review 69:Although the room was quite pretty, it was missing some basics like Kleenex, full length mirror (or even half length!), WIFI (although apparently it was available in the lobby, but that was not very convenient). A mini fridge or personal coffee maker would have been great, especially since breakfast wasn't available at the hotel.
Review 70:Really super receptionist. We got there quite early, but she checked us in and gave us lots of good info about activities and restaurants. The building is very beautiful inside.
Review 71:Room with two double beds was very small. Room decor looked a bit dated. No space in bathroom to sit any accessories. Disappointed that restaurant was not open during week. No breakfast available.
Review 72:Good location. Cost was reasonable. Staff was friendly.
Review 73:Lack of customer service. Bad attitude of owner (Jill) when I noticed upon arrival that the sheets were stained. I requested that they be changed. Rather than apologizing she got very defensive, insisting that they were clean and that the very visible stains were iron scorches. Right, as if all the sheets are ironed every day! She then said she would give me my money back and I could go elsewhere. This was July 4 weekend and most places were fully booked. This attitude was appalling to me. She finally did change the sheets, but obviously begrudgingly. Oh, and when I entered the bathroom there was only one hand towel for two people - no bath towels or facecloths. I had to ask Jill for towels. Thank God I arrived before 9 pm or I would have been out of luck as there is no staff at all after that time.
Review 74:Location was walkable to Main Street
Review 75:It's an old inn, so quite dated and there's no elevator (tough climb up the stairs with luggage). Bed is lovely - a 4 poster bed - but very high for a short person like myself. Lighting very dim in the bed room, both bedside lamps and ceiling light (bathroom lighting is fine).
Review 76:Great location, very clean and a great value for the money. Easy check in and check out. Close to shops and restaurants. Friendly staff.
Review 77:Things are starting to get older, wall paper is coming down, pipes exposed and tiles loose in the bathroom. The parking lot is seriously crowded and when large trucks park at the end space it blocks the entrance.
Review 78:We loved the homey feel and the huge parlor to relax in and great outdoor deck to eat on. The German feel is nice, and they do fresh homemade sausages and the front desk girl even dresses up.
Review 79:It was all good.
Review 80:It was neat to stay in that old structure. It was the St Moritz when we were growing up in Lake Placid in the 50's and 60's. Again, the gal running the place was very accommodating and friendly.i
Review 81:Bar/restaurant were never open when we were there (Fri-Sun). Sauna broken. Cannot check until 3PM
Review 82:Step back in time. Hot tub. Decent value at a time when others were much more expensive/
Review 83:The soaps could have been a little larger.
Review 84:Jill was excellent and very sweet. The location couldn't have been nicer especially for the cost. The ambiance was great...a step back in time.Certainly comfortable
Review 85:Security of the room was terrible. You could open the door by pusking it and inserting a credit card (or similar card)between the frame and the door locking mechanism. The door lock it same as any home bathroom. There is no deadbolt. Person at the desk said "Not to worry this is a very safe area!"
Review 86:Location and price.
Review 87:Nothing stood out. It really was that great
Review 88:One of the cleanest hotel rooms I have had the pleasure of staying in. Owner was nice and had a great personality for what she does. Bed was comfortable too, all around a great place to stay.
Review 89:No complaints.
Review 90:Location very close to main street. Great beds. Neat large hot tub. Nice period ambiance. Good value. Very clean. Roomey in house recreation area including Pool, exercise equiptment, including sauna and hot tub.
Review 91:The only staff complaint was with one of the owners/managers who really did not treat a visiting manager in training (from another nation) in a respectful manner. The issue was not the visitor's fault, but the owner made it seem as though that person was to blame. The other owner/manager was great.
Review 92:Staff not trained for helping guests. Restaurant closed, bar as well till Friday. They promise german spoken, but they can't. Everything old, needs urgent refreshing. Pictures in internet are not realistic!
Review 93:Only location and large parking area.
Review 94:The Pines had very friendly staff, helping us find whatever we were looking for. The smell of sauerkraut fills the air from the restaurant which I personally didn't mind, my husband not so much. Beautiful old charm as the building dates back 100 years, no elevator, no problem! We stayed on the second floor. The room was very basic but worked for our leisure trip, my only complaint was that the walls were thin, you could hear the guests next door in the morning and other showers turning on and off. Otherwise, no problems, very easy walk to and from town. Nice local coffee shop a few doors down. We'd stay there again, it was the right price!
Review 95:Believe it or not, the rooms were to warm for me, but better than being too cold!
Review 96:We really enjoyed the sitting room with the fireplace. It was a nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine watching the fire burn after being outside in -5 degree weather
Review 97:A little noisy when people walk in room above, but tolerable, Complimentary coffee could be out at 6 instead of 7, but I am an early bird.
Review 98:Cool place. Built around 1900, and really nice. Clean rooms, friendly staff. Walk to town.
Review 99:Our room was taken when we arrived. We were put in another room that was filthy! Items under the bed from previous guest(s) included a water bottle; a receipt dated 2/15; change and dirt. Too many cob webs on ceiling light! The beds were so uncomfortable everyone woke up with a sore back. Comforted and pillow shams are old and worn out. So disappointed! This could be a great place... Too dirty for us.
Review 100:This isn't the place for you if you have problems climbing up or down stairs. They accommodated us by moving us to a lower floor That room had mold in the shower and was heated by space heaters. For Lake Placid in the winter that's a problem
Review 101:The wallpaper was peeling in each room, and the rooms were pretty outdated. The hotel didn't offer breakfast (they said they only offer breakfast on weekends).
Review 102:The room was very large- it had a king bed in one room & two queens in the other. All the beds were Tempur Pedic! Jazuzzi tub!
Review 103:very tiny room, barely wider than the bed. VERY OLD tall dresser:useless, blocked by overstuffed chair and ottoman also useless. TV on top of dresser, old and very small. No desk, no place to put suitcase except on the floor. NO HEAT in the bathroom except for a space heater (which I had to move into the room to augment small wall heater.) No elevator. Walls not at all soundproof.
Review 104:clean. hot water was hot.
Review 105:No elevator made it a challenge to get all our luggage and ski items up to or room, plus the second floor room required you to climb 3 sets of narrow stairs. Noise from the road and other guests made getting to sleep difficult.
Review 106:Loved the friendly hosts and super location to town and the ski resort. Wanted to take the bed home with us. Very comfortable. Loved the room décor and the common areas. Great peace of Lake Placid history!
Review 107:The description warned that there is no elevator, but it did not state that the first floor rooms are actually the second floor. The room was extremely cold and took hours to warm up
Review 108:Jill was very welcoming. The decor was quaint.
Review 109:Probably had the worst room in the place...right at the top of the stairs. Noisey..Old style doors. Locked my key in the room but used a credit card to get in.. no deadbolts.
Review 110:Location... charm and charachter
Review 111:Bathroom was not clean, urine on toilet seat, and took forever for hot water.Wall paper was coming off the walls.
Review 112:Friendly owner, whenever the office was open.
Review 113:tissues in the room and better soap. one bed was very firm the other very soft somewhere in the middle would be better. No shades on the front window , needed to paper clip the curtains together for privacy
Review 114:location was wonderful, the short encounters with staff we had , first evening and with jill thereafter. each were fine, very friendly. jill gave us a wonderful place in town for breakfast, may be our new favorite.
Review 115:Does not have free wifi in rooms , really just a minor inconvenience .
Review 116:Very clean very warm. You can smell the nights dinner filling the hotel , great smell
Review 117:Hot tub was luke warm at best, disappointing after a day of skiing. Sauna was never on and was a challenge to operate. Basement where hottub and sauna were was always cold. Général air of a run down hôtel.
Review 118:Location was within a few minutes walk of the main street. Beds were very comfortable.
Review 119:Again I'm sure it's because the building was older, but there were alot of creaks and noises in the night that kept waking us up. Other than that the stay was perfect.
Review 120:The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I asked them to make a sign for our door to greet my boyfriend "Happy Birthday" and it came out perfectly. Everything was nice and clean and it was gorgeous inside even though the building is older.
Review 121:The coffee in the morning tasted old or instant.
Review 122:I enjoyed everything offered at the pines. Staff was wonderful and my accommodations were extremely comfortable.
Review 123:Rooms are on the small side
Review 124:Owners are wonderful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Nice Great Room Old World Charm Comfortable beds Fantastic location & Lake Placid experience
Review 125:Could have been cleaner. The sheets and pillow cases had hair and dirt on them and the hard floors needed regular sweeping. Don't look under the beds. Eek! Not crazy about the pillows.
Review 126:What a great place for a ghost story. I loved the old time feel and the location made for a leisurely walk into town. The temperpedic beds were very comfortable.
Review 127:That we could not stay longer!
Review 128:The elegant environment- room was clean- service was fantastic- the environment made things feel homey and not so commercialized like some hotels.
Review 129:The hotel needs an elevator for guests to utilize its higher floors. Heavy suitcases can be prohibitive for older guests on the tall staircases.
Review 130:from the lovely blankets and tempra pedic mattress, everything was in top shape and pleasant. A quality restoration of a grand old lady. We couldn't believe how quiet it was at night. A truly delightful visit.
Review 131:There was a 12 step stairway to enter the Inn. No elevators, no ice machines, old small televisions, no channel guides or information, no restaurant till saturday evening. Filthy window sills dead bugs etc. I would not recommend this to a friend
Review 132:the location is good. The front desk was helpful locating suitable dinner locations.
Review 133:Had housekeeping issue and staff suggested we leave versus change linens. It got worked out and they apologized. Cute place but the incident was upsetting and put a bit of a damper on the whole weekend.
Review 134:Location and lobby.
Review 135:The only thing I didn't like was that we couldn't stay longer.
Review 136:The inn is cozy and adorable. The owner Jill was incredibly nice and helpful. It's in a great location.
Review 137:A little dated. There was no elevator, and the restaurant was open only on weekends.
Review 138:Nice old hotel. Bikes are not allowed in the hotel, but they provide an accessible room in the basement. Good value for the price. I would stay there again.
Review 139:Not enough towels in bathroom. Hear others in their rooms.
Review 140:Old abd rustic. felt like you step back in time. Staff was friendy and helpful making our stay enjoyable. Thanks!
Review 141:Need an elevator. Seniors can't haul luggage up 24 stairs to the first level. one waste basket in room which wasn't emptied after first night.
Review 142:Staff friendly. Nice lobby/drawing room. Old style hotel rooms nicely furnished.
