Reviews for Brookwood Inn of Durham
Review 1:room 210 was a little run down.Hair dryer not working, windows could use a good cleaning.
Review 2:Close to Duke hosp could walk over without difficulty . I did enjoy the cookies. The cafe was nice to have a quick bite to eat .
Review 3:Exterior entrance; very tight clearance and narrow parking spaces but realize real estate is at a premium at this location. Also had a handicap room (110) and the shower floor is not sloped enough; water runs out to sink area and soaks rug; had to clean up water after each shower in order to brush teeth and dry hair; electrical potential.
Review 4:Close proximity to Duke Cancer Center. Would be my first choice on a revisit!
Review 5:I reserved a room online and when I got there..staff told me that I had to provide an extra 30.00 on my credit card. I asked him could he make an exception because this was not stated. I even offered to pay him 30.00 in cash being that's how I was paying. He simply stated some hotels don't even take cash. He was just rude. So I took my money and stayed next door and they gladly welcomed me. I had to pay more but it was well worth it. I am a Duke employee and the staff next door was exceptional. He( a white heavy set man) could learn a few tips from them. Customer Service is very important when you are in this business and his was horrible.
Review 6:Didn't have a chance to stay at this hotel.
Review 7:Location perfect for access to Duke University and Duke Medical Center. Evening staff very friendly. Restaurant staff very friendly. Shuttle service to Duke University was great.
Review 8:We visit the Duke Hospital with our Grand Daughter every two months. We picked this hotel because it is so close to the hospital. The staff is very friendly and are always concerned on how Brooke is doing. The hotel is always clean.
Review 9:Restaurant not open, customer service at night not great, limited food options
Review 10:I walked from duke hospital to get a good night sleep. The hotel is a bit run down but the bed was quite comfortable. It was a perfect hotel for what I needed at a fine price. I will not stay there again because I prefer slightly a slightly nicer amenities and I am willing to pay a bit more to get them
Review 11:The room was not what they said in the Ad . The Ad is very miss leading . I got there after 4:30 and the king rooms was not ready. The check in staff was not friendly
Review 12:Not to much of nothing
Review 13:Not having a continental breakfast was kind of disappointing, since that is pretty standard now. The biggest problem was that the bed was too firm and I woke up through the night and each morning sore and stiff.
Review 14:We were walking distance from the V.A. hospital (literally across the street) and close to restaurants and stores (3 miles or less).
Review 15:Had to call someone to fix the TV. (They came promptly.) The bathtub was completely stopped up. didn't drain at all. We reported it to the desk at checkout, but only one person could shower, because the tub was full of dirty water after one person showered, and we didn't have time to wait for it to be fixed. We were on the way out.
Review 16:The bed was comfortable. The location was good
Review 17:The older lady at the service desk during dayshift hours was rude and not friendly at all.
Review 18:My daughter and I were attending a Duke men's basketball game. The location was perfect for walking to the campus and the shuttle service after the game was great! Our room was clean and comfortable.
Review 19:The restaurant opens for breakfast and lunch only. There are no places to eat around the hotel with walking distance.
Review 20:The front staff let me check in early - around 10:30 in the morning.
Review 21:The hotel appeared like it was "cut down"to make more rooms, the ceilings were low you could touch them, the furnishing were worn in the lobby
Review 22:The staff was very friendly
Review 23:Not appealing, just basic. Lacks aesthetic touches of newer properties, very functional and efficient.
Review 24:Very convenient if you are visiting Duke or the hospitals. Staff are well trained and very helpful and friendly.
Review 25:I and my 2 friends booked rooms for 2 weeks in advance. I picked double bed room and they picked one bed room. I checked in in the early morning for there is available double-bed room for me but no one bed rooms available. Therefore we leaved our luggage at the hotel and came back later in the evening. The member in the check-in counter told us that they only have double-bed room for them. AREN'T THEY ALREADY RESERVED? We complained and 10 minutes later another member came out and checked the computer and gave us the one bed rooms as reserved. WHAT HAPPENED?
Review 26:good location good wifi
Review 27:We have stayed there before, three years ago for my daughters first heart surgery at Duke University. I was surprised that the staff remembered us! They see so many people come and go. It was a comforting feeling. :)
Review 28:Staff unfriendly or helpful!! When I called down to ask the password for WiFi clerk stated rudely " didn't you get it when you checked in? " well if I had why would I have called asking for it!! Overall hotel was dirty, elevator filthy & there were hairs on my bed linens!
Review 29:Nothing but unable to secure a room at another hotel close by
Review 30:I was a bit put off by the body soap with a label that said the product contains a chemical known to cause cancer.
Review 31:Friendly staff including the kitchen and cleaning staff. Free coffee and cookies was a nice touch.
Review 32:I would like to see the restaurant open for dinner and a free continental breakfast would be very nice.
Review 33:Close to Duke Hospital, medical rates offered, free shuttle transportation, courteous staff, quiet, comfortable rooms
Review 34:There was no way to cut off the fan in the bathroom.
Review 35:I've stayed here several times before. The location is great as it's near Duke Medical. Staff are always very friendly and helpful.
Review 36:AC loud Cant't open the Windows to get some fresh air " all over carpet"
Review 37:Perfectly situated close to the Duke University and Duke Hospital Free shuttlebus Enjoyed the free coffee and used the fitnessroom in the evening
Review 38:I had research to do at Duke's Libraries. They had a shuttle to campus, but it's close enough to walk. Their restaurant serves a great breakfast (but it's not included). Room was clean and comfortable.
Review 39:All the staff friendly & helpful except restaurant, she was Curt. Like she didn't want to be there.
Review 40:Location, location Basic, comfortable, affordable
Review 41:No restaurants or any food venue around the hotel, not even a coffee shop . You need a car. Very small tiny lobby. Poor internet service.
Review 42:Available shuttle to Duke university
Review 43:No lobby facilites, pool, etc.
Review 44:Very close to Duke Hospital and VA Hospital. Can walk to both, about a block. Very friendly and warm staff. Will save you on parking for Duke Hospital, as parking at hotel is included for room rate. Rooms are clean and bathrooms are updated.
Review 45:The room was not clean floor dirty the Maid was close by and offered to wipe everything down again. The room had an Odar. Very musty. Some one had came in our room while we were gone and used the toilet. Which was odd and rude. Front desk sent maintainance up to un clog it right away. The employees were very nice. Old old building but at least I slept! The breakfast room itself is nice but all they serve is toast an cerial. The fruit is fake! I tried to get an orange. That was embarrassing.
Review 46:The bed was comfortable.
Review 47:Walking distance from the Inn to Duke Medical pavilion was wonderful. Visiting someone at the hospital is never pleasant, but the cleanliness and convenience of Brookwood Inn made the trip bearable.
Review 48:Asked for a little extra checkout time since daughter was being discharged from being hospitalized. ..was 15 min late from the time charged me half the room rate. I couldn't leave the doctors she's a minor..they could've cared less
Review 49:I had a problem with a waitress at breakfast. As my spoken English is not optimal, it was difficult for me to explain that I have some allergies. She was impatient. The second day, she ignored me completely and made me wait for more than half an hour before coming to my table. I was first in the restaurant, but she served all the other clients before me, not even looking at me when I was calling her, and when I asked for some creamer, she brought me butter... Then, as I had forgotten to give her the document proving that we had paid for breakfast, she shouted at me rudely in front of all the other clients. We all have our bad days, but respect is a must.
Review 50:Excellent location for Duke University and Hospital. The staff at the front desk was very friendly.
Review 51:The bed was terribly uncomfortable and the pillows were like bricks. Being right across from the hospital made for a lot of noise from sirens, etc...
Review 52:The staff was very friendly and helpful at the front desk and our waitress in the restaurant was very sweet.
Review 53:Internet not secure. Decor dated. Needed car to go to store, restaurant, etc.
Review 54:Clean, easy access to highway, close to downtown, and Duke university, good value
Review 55:The television volume is regulated and when the AC is on, it is hard to hear. No help for this from front desk. Miscommunication regarding making up room for day two resulted in no maid service. We used "do not disturb" for morning and then took it off. we were gone for 7 hours and no service because it said do not disturb earlier. The original knock on the door was at 8:00 a.m. and much too early for us.
Review 56:The restaurant in tge hitel has very limited hours - only open in morning & early afternoon.
Review 57:Staff were super friendly and helpful. The shuttle service is an awesome service and the drivers very knowledgable!
Review 58:My family and I were in town to visit my brother in the VA hospital we arrive earlier than the check in time and was allow to check in making our stressful trip to visit a sick family member a little stress less
Review 59:DID NOT realize that when I made a reservation for Graduation that the Brookwood has a second building, which is unrenovated and plainly needs A LOT OF WORK. We managed to upgrade one room to the main building. I do NOT recommend staying in this building (the SOUTH Tower).
Review 60:I stayed at the Brookwood on occasion when visiting my daughter at Duke. The main building is nice, and the staff tries to be accommodating.
Review 61:My dad was scheduled for surgery at Duke the day after we checked in.During the night (10pm), he had an "accident" (his colostomybag broke loose, leaving feces on the floor next to the bed and acrossthe carpet and the bathroom floor--stinky and unsanitary.) I wentdownstairs in person and delicately explained the extent of what hadtaken place. Thinking to save my dad's dignity and also not wantingsomeone else to have to deal with the mess and smell, I asked if I couldplease have some paper towels, disinfectant and trash bags. I statedthat I wasn't asking for anyone to come clean the room, to which thelady at the desk replied, "That's good, 'cause they'reall home asleep!" I was a little taken aback, but then I was reallyfloored when she said, "...and I can't give you anything, because we can't give supplies to guests. Company policy!" Atthis point, my German heritage began to show itself. I asked, "So,you're telling me I'm expected to get dressed and go driving inthe middle of the night in an unfamiliar town to buy supplies to cleanthe room I've already paid to use??" (I wasn't rude, justforthright.) Her reply was, "I guess so! There's a drugstoreright up the street!" By the way, during the entire interchange, she never once looked up at me from the paperwork she was shuffling, andshe addressed me repeatedly as "Baby." Now, I am as Southernas collard greens, and im the South we sometimes use terms like"Honey", "Baby" and "Darling" to addressclose friends...but nowhere in the South or elsewhere is it acceptableto address a paying patron this way. That is unprofessional in everyway. Fortunately, another employee chased me down as I was headed forthe elevator, informing me in hushed tones that there was no such policyand that the desk clerk was just too lazy to get the things I needed.
Review 62:You can't beat the location, especially for anyone traveling to DukeUniversity Hospital or associated facilities. The hotel is clean, reasonably quiet and well-kept.
Review 63:Everything was perfect. They even provided Russ Professional bath products, which you never find anywhere. Warm cookies in the afternoon, and being coffee drinkers, a great stainless coffee pot and maker in the room. Will stay again when attending an event at Duke University.
Review 64:Typical american hotel with loud air con on the floor, nice ladies at the reception and standard I-will-better-go-somewhere-else breakfast. If you've been in one of such hotels, you've been in all of them. At least this one was clean and bad was comfortable.
Review 65:Location is not ideal for tourists but not completely out of the way. Close to the hospital which is it's primary purpose but still within reasonable distance from all you need to get to
Review 66:The rooms are large and very comfortable. The same with the bathrooms, some hotels it seems that the bathroom was an after thought.
Review 67:The air conditioning unit did not work properly. I reported it and they say it was fixed but then had problems again. Both nights I had to turn the unit off and open the window. You could not control it properly.
Review 68:The location and the shuttle service was very convenient
Review 69:The cleaning staff said we could extend check out to 1pm. When we went to the front desk, they said the cleaning staff is not authorized to grant late check out, so we must pay for an extra 1/2 night. This is poor service; the management needs to take accountability for all of their staff.
Review 70:I would like to see a free continental breakfast added and/or adding more hours to the hotel restaurant, adding dinner if possible.
Review 71:Courtesy of the staff, quiet rooms, comfortable beds, free shuttle service to hospital and surrounding locations.
Review 72:The internet was slow, connections dropped a lot; if you are planning to get substantial work done on line, this could be really irritating.
Review 73:The room was comfortable and the bathroom much nicer than I would have expected. Location worked with easy access to campus and downtown.
Review 74:When I arrived at the desk I was told my reservation had been canceled. There was some kinda note on their computer indicating I had also made a reservation for May 3rd and canceled. All incorrect. Made me uncomfortable. On a previous visit my room as not available because of overbooking. Booking system dubious. I fear for my credit card information.
Review 75:Everything clean and neat
Review 76:The rooms are just the basics in comfort, but it's worth what you pay after all.
Review 77:The staff is always polite and very helpful. They are very flexibel if you have to leave early and come back another day. Hooray to charge hubs in the room for everyone's smartphones.
Review 78:The hotel is located directly next to the hospital so don't expect a great view, but it is centrally located.
Review 79:Every part of the process was easy and check in was a breeze. The room was a fantastic work area with a comfortable table and chair, big fridge, and microwave. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was completely spotless. There is a small cafe on site open for breakfast that has all of the basics. The gym has a few basic items, but was very clean and not too cramped. I used the business center and quickly accomplished everything I need to do. The rooms were also very quiet even though the hotel was full. The hospital is a block away and the Duke campus is a quick drive down the road. Located nearby are a Panera, Noodles, and lots of other breakfast places.
Review 80:The common areas were disgusting. Everything felt crowded. The wait staff in the cafe were inconsiderate. The TV/cable was abysmal. I was disappointed overall.
Review 81:I did like the toiletries in the bathroom; they were certainly the highlight.
Review 82:Did not like the $1 per day fee added and called "safe warranty" -- glad they did not charge for the television warranty or mattress warranty. The microwave in the room may have been on loan from a local museum.
Review 83:Friendly staff, great location. Housekeeping staff did an outstanding job -- well trained, friendly and did a nice job. Liked the bottled water in the room.
Review 84:My check in was the worst. The clerk that checked me in was insulting and put me at a security risk.
Review 85:The hotel was in a good location for me to commute back and forth for my business.
Review 86:Foyer, front desk and personnel are brutal. Restaurant is unpleasant but perhaps as good as the junk food emporium down Erwin Rd.. Wifi is awkward and slow. A/C Heat unit is super noisy and TV reception is pathetic. Who knew Analog still existed? Maybe new rabbit ears on the roof would help.
Review 87:The room was small but well appointed and well cleaned. The location is good if Duke is your interest.
Review 88:An easy chair for watching TV would be nice.
Review 89:Location, Restaurant, Friendly.....I seldom give excellents in surveys, but all my 'good' ratings could be very good.
Review 90:Internet service was poor. Had to keep logging on evey few minutes. Minor but, no on site bar.
Review 91:Nice Hotel. Everyone accommodating. Easy access to our Duke Events . . .
Review 92:The restaurant wasn't open for dinner. We would have preferred to eat at the hotel.
Review 93:The shuttle services. The driver was very helpful and friendly.
Review 94:To split hairs: & Nowhere left to park to check in.
Review 95:Staff was beyond helpful. Was there, at Duke, for a child's medical condition. The front desk, van driver and restaurant staff were nice, helpful, and not pushy. Rooms are comfortable, but basic, which is fine. We arrived late , pleased to have a fresh cookie and coffee waiting. Van driver gave us his card to pick us up after our appointment. Super nice and helpful. Much better than description. Will stay there everytime we have to come back for an appointment.
Review 96:having to pay for extra car parking, also larger discounts would be nice, prices in cafe steep.
Review 97:location was great for our trip, also having a shuttle for the hospital was very easy.
Review 98:Closeness to Duke hospital, friendliness of staff, cleanliness of everything, the little extra touches like bottle water in the room and of course their cookies :)
Review 99:Brochure should reference microwave but containers that are used to microwave food are not provided (so others will know to bring their own). Move outside smoking area away from front (very offensive when loading or unloading). WIFI very slow.
Review 100:location to hospital. very little road noise. convenient ice machine location. reasonable room rate. bed very comfortable.
Review 101:The van service was of great help, covering the whole Duke campus and nearby stores and malls. Besides that the staff was very friendly, the room was comfortable and clean, and breakfast was very nice.
Review 102:I had eye surgery at the Duke Eye Center on Friday, Oct. 24. Brookwood Inn provided excellent shuttle service the morning of that surgery. After the surgery, the shuttle service was a nightmare. As instructed, I called the shuttle service number to say we needed a ride back to the hotel. I was told the van would be there in about 10 minutes. When the van never came I called again and was told by the shuttle driver he was trying to find a restaurant that was new and unfamiliar to him and he would be out to get me as soon as possible. After another wait, I called again and was told he still was looking for the restaurant. I made a total of four calls over one hour. I called for a taxi, but the taxi service said it did not take folks who were located so close to their destination. Finally, an employee of the center took pity on me in my post surgery condition and personally drove us to the hotel. The shuttle never came as far as I know. Complaints to the staff at the Brookwood Inn were met with comments that the shuttle driver was very busy. No apologies were offered.
Review 103:The dinning room wasn't open for dinner. Just breakfast and lunch. After a long day at the hospital, I would have preferred to stay in to eat dinner.
Review 104:Location to Duke Hospital. Safety for women to come and go as needed. Nice room with a lot of amenities. IT is nice to not bring everything with you.. Over all we were impressed with the Hotel and staff. I hope we don't need to go back to Duke again but if we do, we will stay at the Brookwood.
Review 105:Front desk staff were a bit curt. $15 charge for extra parking permit. Very small restrauant with high prices and only for breakfast
Review 106:Room was big enough not to feel cramped. Very quiet location. Bigger TV. Free wi-fi Several good restrauants wakling distance.
Review 107:If you are doing anything at Duke from the hospital to university activities the location is perfect and the free shuttle to the Duke U campus sport venues is worth the say alone.
Review 108:Not much round about, though eating places are 10 minutes walk. Air Con can be noisy, but no worse that many buildings
Review 109:Simple and straightforward, with helpful staff and a good location for Duke University/medical facilities.
Review 110:The restaurant food is delicious. The staff is courteous. The TV with the Blu Ray player was very nice. I especially appreciated the placement of the TV. It needs to be high enough that you can see it when you are laying down in bed. Most hotels don't think about that at all. My husband and I were very comfortable and had a relaxing time.
Review 111:The equipment are old. The fridge and ventilation are too noisy.
Review 112:Staff are friendly and would try their best to help out. The shuttle is fast and convenient. The business center is 24 hours.
Review 113:Although this is an older motel it is very well maintained! We were booked for 2 nights and ended up staying 6. Could not have had a better staff or location for our circumstances, a loved one having surgery at Duke Hospital.
Review 114:Can't think of anything!
Review 115:Nearness to Duke University hospital, close to several interesting and good restaurants. Rooms are good. Breakfast waitress is wonderful and good selection on menu.
Review 116:Unlovely building overlooking a parking garage, not the best way to get a feel for the town on our first visit to Durham
Review 117:Free shuttle to Duke, free wifi, free home baked cookies
Review 118:We have stayed at the Brookwood many times and have been so impressed with the staff in the past. This time, however, we were shocked to find the staff short and inattentive. Even the woman cleaning our room gave us attitude. We have never had this experience and I am trying to chalk it up to just a busy weekend :(
Review 119:The wi-fi was not very good. You were only able to get service in one part of the room and that was even hit or miss
Review 120:The location was perfect. We were moving my son into Duke University and we couldn't have asked for a better location.
Review 121:We had to share the elevators with the staff that was transporting shelving. the following day had to share the elevators with the staff constant complaining to each other. not a pleasant way to start your day.
Review 122:The desk clerk's where extremely nice when checking in.
Review 123:Wi-fi did not work properly in our room. Very low signal strength resulted in frequent connection drops. If you need Wi-fi for multiple devices, you may want to consider another hotel. Wi-fi is considered a "complimentary service"...so don't expect anything to be done if the Wi-fi connection in your room is slow or weak.
Review 124:Good location for Duke patients/visitors, clean room, good staff. Ethernet connection available in room.
Review 125:A little pricey compared to other hotels in area. I assume it's due to hospital convenience.
Review 126:I requested a quiet room and I definitely got it. Thank you! Very clean and comfortable. Would recommend.
Review 127:No dinner served in restaurant.
Review 128:Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Very clean.
Review 129:Location, price
Review 130:Couldn't get coffee maker to work.
Review 131:Adjacent to hospital where wife was having surgery. Good breakfast.
