Reviews for Hotell Gamla Fängelset
Review 1:Because of the period we've been there (christmas eve) there was not a lot going on in the city or surrounding area. so if you're looking for this kinda holiday, you should avoid umea on this day.
Review 2:Very good beds and nice location (old prison) Really good showers and din my opinion it could be a good stopover for a quiet hiking pauze
Review 3:Took time to find the hotel as there was only a small sign board outside the hotel which was difficulty to track and also the keys to be collected from the restaurant / bar beside it.
Review 4:The old prison was a great place to stay, would recommend it to the budget travellers, its not far from the city center only 10 mins walk, the kitchen was well equipped and great place to cook and eat.
Review 5:It was an echo in the building - noise from conference room was heard in the cell. No light at the key code device at the outer door. Draught at the window
Review 6:It was nice to try something else. I just needed a bed and the cell was a good choice for that time and money.
Review 7:It was a pretty cool experience to stay at a jail. The staff were terrific, especially with my later arrival and working around my plans. Nice location about 5 minute walk from city centre or university
Review 8:A reconstruction was going on and the workers started very early - on Saturday morning! It wasn't the most pleasant way to wake up. But that is just a temporary drawback. Otherwise it is a great facility.
Review 9:The room was small, but clean. Showers, WC were OK and the kitchen was well equiped - even with some free coffee, tea, syrup, etc.
Review 10:Toilet paper ran out and there was no staff to inform about it.
Review 11:Really nice and clean hotel. The little museum room about the jail's history was interesting. Close to the center, but far enough so there wasn't too much traffic.
Review 12:We got the keys and the code to enter in the building in the bar nearby. The first impression when entering in the building was a bit strange. Then we were looking for our room and moment by moment our feelings were changing. After finding our room we went to explore the rest of the building. There was a very little museum in one cell and on the second floor there was a very well equipped kitchen. The room was very clean, free Wi-Fi, paying parking (about 1€ per hour, free 19:00 - 9:00), walking distance to town centre. Highly recommended.
Review 13:The breakfast was a bit of a let-down, my advice would be to skip it in favor of getting some groceries and using the kitchen.
Review 14:Great atmosphere, rooms clean and well equipped, no frills-but it is, after all, a prison, so it's a part of the experience.
Review 15:wifi would not work for me, wasted an hour trying to log on to internet, two other guests had same problem.
Review 16:Excellent decor, very spaceous and comfortable. No problem with security here.
Review 17:The address led one to believe that the hostel was on the opposite side of the street. No reception staff most of the time.
Review 18:Our room was spacious--former kitchen room--with plenty of space for our luggage with room to sit at a table.
Review 19:The only complain is booking with booking.com did say the rooms would have private bathrooms but all rooms had shared bathrooms. In late May, middle of the week when we stayed there were not that many travelers so it was ok. Also, wifi was a problem. The wifi router was on but had issues so was not functional.
Review 20:Our travel plans had suddenly changed and needed a one night stay ion our way to Oslo. Looked like a great option and booked. Great find it was an awesome experience staying in a converted historical building. Didn't know till we arrived about he historical importance. They also have a small museum about the prison.
Review 21:The WiFi was down most of the time. Breakfast is not a buffet - you get a plate with an egg, yoghurt, cheese and an apple (well I do realize there is no breakfast buffet in prison either). Restaurant staff did not seem very motivated. Recommend fixing your own breakfast. No staff on site most of the time in the weekend. Doors slamming quite loudly. Plumbers started working in the bathroom at 07:45 monday morning.
Review 22:Unique prison hotel makes for a special experience. Not long walk to Umeå centre.
Review 23:The staff were rarely onsite so if you had any questions you would have to call or ask at the cafe next door.
Review 24:The hotel was really comfortable & easy to find, only a 15 min walk from the central station. The facilities were clean & of a good standard for the price.
Review 25:- the wi-fi connection was poor in the room, maybe due to the old structure of the building
Review 26:- location (between the city and the university/hospital, near a quiet residential area) - the room is a twist of preservation of the prison cells and simplistic, modern room design/furniture - the heater under the table! (keeping me warm while working in the winter time like this)
Review 27:For the price, it is hard to find fault. Lighting in the room (a former prison cell) could have been brighter. A larger mirror would also have been nice. Clearer instructions for non-Scandinavian guests regarding whether or not it is appropriate to wear outdoor shoes in e.g. the shared bathrooms might be useful, as some guests were doing this which seemed a rather bad idea.
Review 28:Located not too far from the city centre. Historic former prison that has been thoroughly renovated, wifi access even reaches the rooms. The shared WC and shower facilities were clean and there was never any issue with queuing. Bathrobes are provided - useful for trips to the shared facilities. A kitchen with crockery is provided for guests who wish to use them. One might consider the place as a hybrid between a hotel and hostel.
Review 29:-) Did not expect that the rooms (former cells) were that small.
Review 30:-) Nice idea of making a hotel into a former prison -) Good location (10 min walk to the city center of Umea) -) Clean -) Silent
Review 31:Not bad but Swedish thing no staff on duty so hard to rate no one
Review 32:The rooms small and stuffy Claustrophobic
Review 33:It's cheap as umea goes
Review 34:The breakfast was the baddest breakfast I've eaten in a hotel/hostel. Max value 20 SEK but costed 90!!!!! Very dirty everywhere
Review 35:Not having a private bathroom
Review 36:It was clean and quite the bed was absolutely OK
Review 37:Breakfast well-hidden
Review 38:Atmosphere
Review 39:Internet didnt work
Review 40:No wifi in room
Review 41:It was an old prison!
Review 42:Doors hard to open and squeaking.
Review 43:The building has a character and is very well adapted to the hostel.
Review 44:Excellent location
Review 45:internet connection problem
Review 46:clean facilities(rest room, shower, kitchen, conference room )
Review 47:I had troubles with wi-fi all the time...
Review 48:Really good location, comfy room, well-eqiupped kitchen.
Review 49:none.
Review 50:good food in attached cafe bar.
Review 51:We had a very convenient stay
Review 52:No breakfast included
Review 53:prizeworth
Review 54:Poor information about check-in on weekends (it´s in the restaurant next door) and opening hours. It wasn´t easy to find a number where someone answered when the reservation was made friday afternoon and my stay was on sunday. The feeling that I slept in a room where someone probably had been feeling bad about beeing..
Review 55:Cheap and central. Friendly staff in the restaurant where the check in was on weekends.
Review 56:Nothing at all!
Review 57:Gamla Fängelset was perfect for my needs. Centrally located, simple but comfortable, friendly and helpful staff, also at Cafe Göteborg next door
Review 58:the trade-off with the price means that there is no running water or toilet in the room, but that is the idea of this kind of place
Review 59:value for monery, easy to reach, well indicated, walkable distances, central location, good breakfast formula with Restaurang Gotenberg, design, quiet, clean, well-serviced
Review 60:Spending the night in a prison in a cell is a bit unusual - and slightly exciting, knowing you won't be there for ever! Great for people into minimalism/ austerity. Maybe not as great if you are claustrophobic!
Review 61:- My Time magazine slid off the bed mattress and down the crack between the woodwork. Now it's imprisoned there forever. And I thought the place was no longer a prison. Maybe there are all sorts of valuables in there - might be worth checking! - I usually visit Umeå once a year, this year I would give the city a huge minus for tidiness. It's been a long time since I saw so much rubbish on the streets and in the parks.
Review 62:- Clean showers/toilets - Clean in every way - The bathrobe - The magazine from SFV (I'm Swedish speaking) but wish it had been even in English for all our tourists. - The café next door
Review 63:Location is good. Everything is clean. There is a small museum room inside.
Review 64:Unfriendly stuff Poor cleaness
Review 65:Great location
Review 66:Wi-Fi did not work!!!
Review 67:For the extra fee, breakfast selection is very small and not worth it.
Review 68:Liked the idea of turning a prison into a hotel.
Review 69:Very few shower stalls, no soap in the shower stall.
Review 70:Great utilization of old prison, tastefully designed and clean
Review 71:overall a nice, bright, friendly place
Review 72:It was a very nice stay.
