Reviews for The Hotel Alcott
Review 1:We should have been told that there was a wedding scheduled for the same time as our stay. Very loud music ruined our evening coming through the floor. A cloud of cigar smoke from the veranda caused me to have an asthma attack. Very disappointed.
Review 2:Friendly staff, pretty room in beautiful Cape May, NJ.
Review 3:Had to unclog the toilet and I wasn't even the one who clogged it. (Previous people did) I told the front desk at 330, we came back at 1130pm and it still wasn't taken care of. I told the front desk and all he did was drop a plunger off at the door. Thank you sooo much for doing the absolute least amount of work possible.
Review 4:Classy looking place. Nice vintage feeling to the room and hall
Review 5:I would have liked a small fridge in the room to cool down the wine bottles we bought, but that's the only inconvenience we experienced.
Review 6:The location was excellent; walking distance to the historic district, restaurants, and the beach. The wineries and other attractions all were within a 10-minute drive. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable.
Review 7:Quaint older B&B style hotel on the beach block in Cape May. The atmosphere is homey and the staff is most pleasant. We were in Cape May for a Fall beach wedding and enjoyed our stay here.
Review 8:Staff was very welcoming, professional and helpful. Betty made the most wonderful breakfast pastries and the delicious cookies and lemonade that she made available mid-day were a lovely and delicious surprise.
Review 9:Hotel is outdated. Rugs are old and bathroom fixtures had rust on them . No parking and no elevator. No service to bring bags up to bed room.
Review 10:Location was the only positive item for the hotel.
Review 11:No parking lot for thehotel means you areconstanly feeding the meter for street parking. And the lot the hotel recommends is very very faraway. Didnt know about thisissue when I booked hotel. Had I known, probably would have stayed somewhere else. Also continental breakfast was horrible! At 9 am all they had out wad 2 crossants and 4 mini muffins. Woman sitting next to me asked if theywere going to put out some bagels and she put out 2! There were 8 peple all looking for breakfast at that time. Skip the continental and go down street to diner,Great breakfast there.
Review 12:Closeness to beach.
Review 13:The parking off site is a real pain. Constantly looking for parking on local streets was not fun.
Review 14:The room was very clean and the Alcott is located very near the beach.
Review 15:Difficulty with hot water in bathroom. We called on Wed regarding the hurricane and storms. Told if we cancel would lose money. On Mon learned from another guest we could have rescheduled. No one told us this.
Review 16:Staff was great. Since my husband has difficulty walking they gave us a suite on first floor.
Review 17:Room smelled musty. Parking is way off sight about 2-3 blocks down the street versus assuming off street free parking means a parking lot. Continental breakfast very sparse. Refreshments were to be served sat 12-3 pm never happened we were told not enough people to do that for. Really?? La Veranda closed for the season did not know that until after reservations made.
Review 18:AC died in our room sat pm we were moved to a new room that was very nice
Review 19:Continental breakfast was so bad we ate out to breakfast everyday. Room a bit plain and small but bed super comfortable. There were definite things that needed to be fixed, replaced. Such as the door knob to the closet was virtually hanging off, extra outlets didn't work except in the bathroom too. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room however so that little stuff didn't matter it was just we felt overpriced considering. They were accommodating the first night we were there by giving us some wine glasses when we asked for our wine we had on the porch. My husband and I did find it a bit rude though when the front desk guy who handed the glasses to us didn't get off the phone during that time. He was still speaking to whoever it was, on the phone. When checking out they wanted to charge us $25 for losing a second key they said. First of all we NEVER received two keys to our room only one. We didn't feel as guests we should pay for their incompetence upon our arrival. My husband who is not a person that gets angry was livid. While it wasn't the women's fault at the desk, was management's fault we felt she should of bent the rules. She told us she would have to look at the security cameras as if it was some big conspiracy. Then if we didn't get two keys she would speak to the manager. She admitted too that this has happened before and her manager MAY reimburse us.
Review 20:That it was clean, comfortable bed and close to the beach and other places like the Cape May Mall and restaurants.
Review 21:Lovely. The staff was all very gracious and welcoming. The hotel itself was beautifully furnished. You really feel as though you step into a simpler era- the bygone leisurely summer days at the turn if the century. It's actually bittersweet.
Review 22:The hotel is badly in need of updating. The room was very small and there was only one side table. The windows faced the a row of air conditioners. The bathroom tile was stained and the shower curtain was dirty and stuck together. Parking is inconvenient.
Review 23:The location of the property was very good. The rocking chairs on the porch were enjoyable.
Review 24:Not crazy about the location. The bar scene is not for us. But this is a quibble. Really great hotel with great service.
Review 25:Great hotel with great service.
Review 26:no on site parking.had to walk about 1/2 mi to the parking lot for this hotel.very inconveniant. did not say continental breakfast was servrd instead of full breakfast.no elevator to rooms.had to walk up flight of 50 steps to the room
Review 27:good location to beach and restaurants
Review 28:no elevators, you advertize free parking off property close......was 1/2 mile.......too much to walk to every day
Review 29:Close to beach and shopping......
Review 30:The rooms are screaming for normal hotel furniture. We had to lay out all our suitcases on the floor. The food at the restaurant is fine but the space is dreadful.
Review 31:It's a charming though old hotel with a very friendly staff VERY conveniently located close to the beach.
Review 32:Price was very very high. We didn't even have a chair in our room. The lamp didn't work and the continental breakfast was a joke.
Review 33:Location was good
Review 34:This was my first time to Cape May so I don't have anything to compare it to, but as others have said for the price the place could use an update. Our room was on the bigger side with 2 beds so plenty of space. One downside is there is really no closet space to speak of. Just a small area to hang a few things. Everything was clean though and toiletries in the bathroom were nice
Review 35:Great location just steps from the beach and walking distance to shopping and dining. Breakfast in the morning, mostly pastries with some cereal, plus coffee and juice
Review 36:The room was very small. No Bel-Hop to assist with luggage or elevator. The designated parking was .6 miles away. For people who have problems walking, it is not recommended. There is no shuttle to and from the parking lot. The hotel did not supply beach chairs or beach passes.
Review 37:The Restaraunt was terrific. The food and service was excellent. The Hotel was located close to the beach.
Review 38:Room was much smaller than pictured on website; no tissues in bathroom, broken towel bar. Air conditioning took over a day to cool the room.
Review 39:Location is terrific. Staff is very accomodating.
Review 40:Our room was so small that when the door was open you couldn't walk past the bed to the bathroom. The porch was lovely but other than that there was very limited public seating and in the evening half of the porch was dedicated to the restaurant. The wireless connection was erratic and unreliable.
Review 41:Lovely old hotel just a few blocks from the beach. Staff are friendly but not always well informed. Beds were comfortable, rooms were clean.
Review 42:Not a lot of amenities. Nearest pharmacy a long walk and parking was difficult unless you park at the municipal lot -another long walk. If you like weddings this is your place.
Review 43:I love the location and proximity to the beach and the old style of the architecture.
Review 44:Like any old building --there is no elevator, so having a 3rd floor room was a strain physically. Plus, it really is a stretch to call a place a bed and breakfast inn when there are over 200 rooms--it was a hotel that included a cereal breakfast. Heck I stayed at a Fairfield by Marriott by the airport and they had eggs, cereal, fruit sausage etc..Sorry to sound less than complementary but let's keep these reports real.
Review 45:It was only 1 1/2 blocks from the beach
Review 46:WiFi did not work, and I needed it for work purposes. No chair or desk in room. No books by Louisa May Alcott in sun room! No access to second floor veranda unless you stayed on that floor.
Review 47:Location, history, music in lobby, sun room, the lack of an elevator, the veranda, the porch.
Review 48:Very poor parking accommodations, no elevator or assistance with bags with many stairs to climb. Unreliable WiFi, which is troublesome when you're trying to relax on vacation and you're unable to check your email to make sure everything is okay. I will not return because of the WiFi, you can't advertise that you have it then when guests arrive say you can't always get on it. The only time I could check my messages was if I was right in the lobby, never in my room.
Review 49:Good location, friendly staff and clean spaces.
Review 50:Room was adequate, bathrooms were redone and fairly new. Bed and pillows were not comfortable, did not sleep well. A lot of stairs, if on the top floor. Parking is seven blocks away. Save up quarters to park close. Continental breakfast wasn't worth stopping for. We put a do not disturb sign on our room as we did not want maid service for the one day as it was our anniversary, they ignored the sign and felt our privacy was invaded a bit. Not a bad hotel but would choose someplace different if had the option. Didn't feel for the price it was worth it.
Review 51:Staff was friendly, lobby was gorgeous.
Review 52:Parking was not close to the facility.
Review 53:The facility was very accommodating for us. Whenever we had a desire or need, the staff met it. For example, eating in the courtyard, needing a lot of shampoo. Lol. The staff was excellent!
Review 54:Wrote in the notes that a firm mattress was needed(recent serious back surgery). Was given a very soft mattress, my spouse was even uncomfortable. For a Cape May Hotel/ Bed and Breakfast there was no afternoon snack or drink. Also, no " curb appeal" in the downstairs sitting area.
Review 55:Being able to have breakfast on the front porch and sitting in the rockers.
Review 56:Free breakfast consisted of cereal and half of a bagel. Nothing hot. And not even water when I was down there. Rooms were TINY and parking is insanely far.
Review 57:Really cute on the outside.
Review 58:1. The room and the bed were tiny. 2. The walls - paper thin 3. The doors into the room and bathroom hard to open / close. 4. WIFI - none worked at all ( although advertized). 5. Continental breakfast selection as poor as it gets. The 2nd morning at 9:30 most items were gone and we had to wait almost 30 minutes for it to be replentished. I understand that Cape May is generally more expensive than the rest of the shore but for $340/night I would expect a little more.
Review 59:1. The location with respect to the beaches and the restaurants while being far enough to escape the noise was very good. 2. The staff at the desk was very helpful.
Review 60:WiFi only worked on 1st floor. Room was very small. Parking was far but not too bad.
Review 61:Location Location Location. Room was affordable. Free Breakfast
Review 62:Hotel offered free parking "at a location nearby". However, the parking lot was 8-9 blocks away - a really long walk - which necessitated walking everywhere else we went because our car was so far away. Also, our room was on the third floor and there was no elevator - it was difficult getting our luggage up all those steps.
Review 63:Hotel was pretty and nicely decorated. It was a close walk to the beach and to shopping and restaurants. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bed was really comfortable. Space was given to store beach gear on the first floor. La Verandah restaurant in hotel had a nice menu. Would have eaten there but it is closed on Mondays, which was our only night there.
Review 64:wifi was unreliable, bedrooms very small, 2 plug sockets didnt work, no refridgerator, bathroom ceiling tiles were stained, limited outside space and no facilities ie pool or fitness machines, breakfast was very basic
Review 65:old style building. good restaurant and waiting staff
Review 66:--parking is ridiculously far away, no effort being made to procure a few spots near hotel for guests, even check-in spots are metered -- breakfast doesn't start until 8 am, and you can't even get a cup of coffee in the lobby before then -- nowhere to lock up our very expensive bikes, and no effort made to help us out --building and rooms very tired, reasonable quality furnishings, but badly in need of a coat of paint and some upgrading -- front desk personnel generally unhelpful and uninformed
Review 67:-- mattress was comfortable, sheets were reasonably new and crisp -- location of hotel is good -- hotel was quiet
Review 68:room with queen bed could have been bigger. was very small compared to picture didn't have on site parking
Review 69:great location, clean and friendly staff, close to stores and beach
Review 70:Internet - horrendous!--------------------------------------- Breakfast - Nothing left to eat - three quarters of an hour before end of breakfast time. No juice, no muffins, certainly no croissants. No convenient parking (did not matter to me). No swimming pool. I thought that the money was huge.
Review 71:Atmosphere. I think that the people were nice. (Some haughty ...)
Review 72:1st room the air conditioning didn't work. To their credit we were moved to a nicer room when they didn't get it working.
Review 73:Very nice even posh room w veranda. Nice continental breakfast.
Review 74:very friendly staff, clean hotel, great location. Price a bit high, but August at the NJ shore, it's to be expected. would recommend this hotel.
Review 75:No parking close to the hotel. The parking lot they offer is several blocks away, so the better solution is to park on the street and pay for the parking meters. No wi-if or it wasn't offered or mentioned to us.
Review 76:The location and cleanliness and the staff are excellent
Review 77:Inspite of advertising having internet access I wasn't able to log on to the internet from the room (101) or the lobby anytime during my stay. Resorted to a coffee shop near Congress Hall. The TV did not work a day and half during our stay. The room did not provide any space to accomplish anything other than sleep and shower.
Review 78:Liked the location, cleanliness.
Review 79:We have stayed there 3 times now over several years. We are always very happy with our experience. It is very clean and comfortable, and is a beautiful historic building.
Review 80:The room was extremely small, the pictures of the hotel rooms were misguiding. The bathroom door refused to close all the way, and the room had this strong old musty smell to it. Housekeeping was sub par. She basically came in and made the bed (spritzed it with some freshener spray), refolded our towels, and took the trash. That was it. Especially being so close to the beach I would've expected some sort of vacuuming, wiping down the sink...) The continental breakfast was lacking in many ways, we ended up walking the down street for breakfast every morning instead.
Review 81:The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the location suited us very well. It was just a few minutes walk to the beach, restaurants and stores. Which was great since I was 6 months pregnant when we were there.
Review 82:Curtains were torn and looked worn. WiFi was almost non-existent!
Review 83:VERY close to the beach and the Carpenter's Mall. Nice room, comfortable bed. We asked for a fridge for my husband's medical needs and they were very accommodating.
Review 84:Not told in advance there was no elevator. "parking" about a mile away, room was the smallest I've ever been in at any hotel.
Review 85:Clean with a nice staff.
Review 86:The only problem we had was getting the wifi. It was a hit or miss thing. The hotel and location were wonderful!
Review 87:Hotel comfort, atmosphere and location were great
Review 88:The lack of an elevator was a disappointment as was no on-site parking.
Review 89:The cleanliness of our room and that of the overall hotel made our stay. The maid service is top notch. I am a germ-aphobic but felt totally at ease everywhere in the hotel. It is a half block from the boardwalk and beach.
Review 90:Parking was over 1/2 mile away. No help getting our luggage up 4 flights of stairs. Restaurant was closed to us because of a wedding. Drunk wedding guests were rude and very loud.
Review 91:Close to beach and downtown activities.
Review 92:Oh my god, parking !! You need to find a free spot close by, the hotel gives you a "parking pass" from the city for a lot near the mall. Its not an easy walk and you are lucky if you actually find a spot. I did not, drove around for awhile waiting for that magic time when people start leaving the beaches and found a spot for free and I did not move for 4 days.
Review 93:Excellent staff! Location great for walking
Review 94:The parking situation was a little challenging. Best to pay a few hours for street parking in the evening and park free from 10:00 pm to 10:00 am. Also the restaurant was very "stuffy"
Review 95:The hotel had a very interesting history. The employees were very helpful.
Review 96:Breakfast was not, just a weak continental, and parking was useless. Walk to parking lot was between 1/2 and 3/4 miles.
Review 97:Nice facility, nice people, good location.
Review 98:The carpets were a little dirty and there were no hooks in the rooms to hang anything. That was very inconvenient.
Review 99:The restaurant, the location and the staff were exceptional.
Review 100:Had to haul a lot of luggage up a lot of steps. Wish they had a freight elevator. Also, no parking closely and reliably available. Ok for young knees but not us old guys.
Review 101:Location was good, breakfast & snacks were fine. Dinner was very good.
Review 102:Did not like having to park so far away. Very slow wifi connection if at all.
Review 103:Great location a block from the beach. Enjoyed walking downstairs to have breakfast on the porch. Loved the blueberry muffins and the croissants.
Review 104:While the bathrooms were recently redone, there was little to no space to hang things...not good for a shore location with lots of towels and bathing suits to dry. Towels were holy and threadbare. Drop tile ceilings need to be replaced...many were vary stained
Review 105:Nice location...close to the beach and center of town. Friendly staff at the desk.
Review 106:not up to the quality expected or that we are used to...room very small. At this point we are being charged $100 over stated amt. ...they have promised to rectify this but so far haven't heard back from American Express (they are following up for us)
Review 107:the entry and over-all victorian look of the hotel
Review 108:We had several issues with our room, Talked about them with one of the management staff, asked for some type of credit for our inconvenience, Web site described flat screen tv, we had a crt monitor, bathroom fan did not operate efficiently, wall thermostat was defective, temp reached 80 degrees, no credit received, Will not stay again while visiting Cape May
Review 109:Excellent location,
Review 110:Parking was impossible, have a knee injury wish lack of elevator would have been clearly mentioned, room could have used some enhancements, could serve coffee in the lobby early AM instead of making guests wait until 8AM
Review 111:Charm of the hotel
Review 112:Loved our suite on main floor. Also loved the chandellier in bedroom. The look & feel of the room was the old south, with wide plantation blinds. Loved the rocking chairs on the veranda Continental breakfast on the veranda at intimate tables was very pleasant. We also had some wonderful conversations with other guests eating out on the veranda. We enjoyed speaking with the young gentelman at the desk. Unfortunately, I have a terrible memory for names. He has worked at The Alcott for many years. Thank you for being so kind & helpful.
Review 113:Too many flights of stairs and no elevator. Guest parking lot is six blocks away otherwise just meters.
Review 114:Location was excellent, just a short block and a half to the beach. Lovely porch with rocking chairs to enjoy in the evening.
Review 115:No elevator, street parking only (they give you permit but you have to drive around, could be a few blocks out before you get a spot) and no coffee machine in room but coffee not available til 8am. Would've liked beach tags to be included in stay with a $300/night room.
Review 116:Charming, old world, friendly staff, updated bathrooms and comfortable beds.
Review 117:Our room was very nice, but quite small. The most frustrating part of our experience was that the wifi was extremely slow. We had wanted to watch a movie on Netflix, and it was impossible. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to people who need reliable internet.
Review 118:The staff at the front desk were pleasant and helpful. The maid folded our towel into an adorable little cozy for our tooth brushes, which was a nice touch.
Review 119:The "free" wi-if didn't work. Kept saying I was out of range. Very frustrating. The closest parking was 5 blocks away. No elevator to my third floor room. Key wouldn't work in the door until I spent 3 to 5 frustrating minutes playing with it. I would never stay there again!
Review 120:The bed was comfortable.
Review 121:There is no parking, however, again, everything is in walking distance.
Review 122:I love the quaintness of this hotel, it was almost like going to your grandmothers house for a visit. Everything is in walking distance.
Review 123:Did not like the parking situation. Trying to find parking on the street nearby and/or paying the parking meters was an inconvenience. But that's all of Cape May's situation. Too bad they don't have off-street parking for hotel.
Review 124:- Average breakfast
Review 125:- Clean well-kept hotel. - Person in adjacent room had excessive snoring issue. Hotel staff able to relocate us. - Convenient location to beach and downtown mall shops/area.
Review 126:For Mother's Day I think the Continental Breakfast couls have been better. Only a bana as fruit, no granola or raisins or nuts. Bagels were plain and muffins were tiny. Parking was an issue also.
Review 127:We thought it wouls be "run down" but found it to be beautiful, fresh and quite up to date.
Review 128:No mini fridge in room or full length mirror. The iron leaks and burns your clothes. When you flush the toilets it's sounds like a bomb is going off. You can hear the toilets three rooms away. You can easily hear the conversation of the people in the next room. The doors slam shut. Extremely annoying to hear toilets and doors slamming from up to 3 rooms away. If you don't bring a sound machine you will be woken up regularly. The breakfast was pathetic. For 200.00 a night. I expect more than a few bagels and cornflakes.
Review 129:Rooms are Very nice. Beds extremely comfortable. Friendly staff.
Review 130:There is no designated parking, you park on the street where you can. The room was 11' by 10' facing inward, (this was an upgrade per front desk) with only a small cane chair to sit on. There is no elevator, you carry all your luggage :(
Review 131:Staff were courteous, the room was clean, there was free wi-fi and the bed comfortable and the veranda with rockers was very nice. If you want to step back in time this hotel would provide an excellent experience.
Review 132:The only thing I think I would change is the breakfast selection-a few different fruits, some yogurt and perhaps a few more cereal and tea choices would be advisable.
Review 133:My husband and I loved the coziness of the hotel room. The bed was extremely comfortable, the staff was lovely and the close proximity to Washington Street all added to the wonderful time we had.
Review 134:There was a wedding in the hotel. There Was No Back Entrance So We Actually Had To Walk Through The Wedding To Return OR Leave The hotel. A little embarassing.
Review 135:The bed was one of the most comfortable that I've slept on in a long time. Staff very friendly. Close to shopping.
Review 136:Hotel Alcott is a stately property in a quiet section of Cape May but a short walk to all of the action. We had not stayed at the hotel before - usually opting for Congress Hall; however, we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms, while small, were clean and beautifully appointed. The beds were so comfy and the bathroom was clean and modern. We will be back!
Review 137:I recently stayed at the hotel for a weekend with my mother and sister. The rooms were very nice and clean. The hotel gave off a bed and breakfast vibe with extremely friendly staff. It was centrally located, a block from the beach and within short walking distance of shops and restaurants. The free breakfast provide was delicious! I would absolutely stay here again!
Review 138:Filthy. Rugs in our room full of stains. Fake. Picture shows porch off 2nd floor. Guess what! Only 3 rooms have access to porch! No parking. Picture walking 1/4 mile at nite, poorly lit uneven sidewalks back to hotel. Breakfast-looking for decent food? No bread. bagels, muffins. No sugar free cereals. No skim milk. Toaster (30 yrs old I guess) One side of toaster does not work! Tiny room. And we were in one of their large rooms.
Review 139:The mattress. That was it for the bedroom. No desk. one nite table. No wifi in rooms. The stairway. No elevators, so we got to know the stairway quite will. Pity those who have 2 flights to climb.
Review 140:Room was too small for bedside tables on both sides which would have given better light for reading. The Wifi signal was poor to non-existent. No robe or slippers as advertised (we didn't need them but still).
Review 141:Very comfortable bed and pillows. Loved the large bathroom and the soap/shampoo brand. The verandah was great to breakfast on or lounge. Loved the individual heat/A/C control!
