Reviews for The Carroll Villa Hotel
Review 1:Our room was very tight and choppy, although old Victorian homes are tough to retrofit. The bathroom fan was so loud we chose not to use it. In all fairness, we forgot to mention it to the staff when we left. A few more pillows would be a helpful for those who prefer a softer option.
Review 2:Staff was courteous and helpful. The food was terrific! Loved the house made Chorizo... Probably one of the best breakfasts in Cape May. Great location although parking lot was several blocks away. Shopping just around the corner.
Review 3:We liked the location. We were able to walk to the beach and to the Washington Street Mall. We Loved the Mad Batter for breakfast and dinner. We can't wait to return.
Review 4:You advertise that breakfast is included in the price however you only allow $30. This will not cover breakfast for 2. Get rid of the CHEAP plastic glasses. When paying top rates expect glass in our room.
Review 5:Excellent location and the restaurant is excellent. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Room was very nice.
Review 6:The parking was the worst as well as the very steep steps getting to rooms. The layout of the B & B was not relaxing since we had to go through the restaurant to get to our room
Review 7:The food in the restaurant was good-large selection especially for breakfast
Review 8:We found the room small and should have requested a queen size or king size bed. We also found the shower to be too small and not enough lighting near the bed which made it difficult to read.
Review 9:The staff was wonderful and the food both for breakfast and dinner were terrific. The location was perfect to the beach.
Review 10:There was not an "included" evening cocktail hour or tea time as many B&Bs typically offer in other cities/states. i wish the provided parking was a little closer but it was manageable. A short 10 min. walk.
Review 11:Not bad for a last minute booking The location is ideal. The restaurant has great food. I would try to book a better room with a better view and maybe on the second floor next time. We were on the third. Checkin staff was very warm and welcoming... the check-out staff not so much but maybe because they were busy with ensuring everyone is checked out so that they are ready for those checking in.
Review 12:The standard double room is very small, so it wasn't suited for 2 girlfriends sleeping on 1 bed. I knew this ahead of time but booked anyway. If you went as a couple, it is manageable.
Review 13:location is great. Restaurant is great. The room was clean. I liked the bar area.
Review 14:Our room was booked late, to be fair. But our room was small and the Queen sized bed was a bit to small for us. The placement of the bed was a bit odd, with no space for a night stand. Bathroom was really tiny and the shower was not very powerful.
Review 15:Location is great and the rooms were nicely furnished. Food at the Mad Batter is outstanding, so the breakfast vouchers and dinner discount is a real plus! Staff extremely helpful! Outside dining option a plus. Quiet street!
Review 16:I think the cost of the room is higher than the quality. It's a small bed and breakfast which is nice, no amenities except for a $30 coupon for breakfast. I think the cost for the room just didn't match with what it is.
Review 17:I enjoyed the breakfast at madbatter and the room itself was quite lovely.
Review 18:Your'e online add says free breakfast, not true, you get a 30$ voucher. No Central air. Finally you say hotel, but you are a bed &breakfast.
Review 19:Location,treatment from staff.
Review 20:Room description and picture were not as advertised. The picture taken must have been at least 10 years old. Big airy windows that could not be opened since it was directly on the street. The headboard was backed up to the stairs to the rooms above us and the other side of the room was against the outside restaurant. This place was unbelievably noisy!!! We did not get much sleep and couldn't wait to get out of there. Oh, and also, the parking lot was approximately 8 blocks from the hotel! I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy!
Review 21:Breakfast was pretty good. but restaurant looked dirty.
Review 22:Although the room was charming, it was overpriced for what you are getting. The lock on the door was not very sturdy. If someone wanted to break in they could no problem. The lock on the bathroom door was not good either and the bathroom door did not stay shut. It was pouring rain when we checked in, parking several blocks away was not ideal. There is no pool
Review 23:We enjoyed the restaurant and bar with live music downstairs. We also enjoyed the coupon vouchers for breakfast, the food was good. We enjoyed our overall stay and love Cape May. We would most likely chose another place that is a little more modern next time with a pool and closer parking. We did like that we had a short walk to the beach and the shops.
Review 24:Parking is a 10 minute walk away, in a gravel lot. Room size is smaller than in modern hotel, but that wasn't a concern.
Review 25:Middle of entertainment and shopping district. Short walk from beach. Courteous staff. Paid-for breakfast and discounted dinners at next-door Mad Batter.
Review 26:Wifi kept cutting in and out; room was a bit cramped; no elevator or on-site parking.
Review 27:The Carroll Villa hotel is quiet and cozy, and in a great location -- nestled amongst the Victorian "Gingerbread Gems" of Cape May. Step out front and you can see the beach at the corner.
Review 28:We stayed in the Annex and the entertainment in the bar was quite loud. Fortunately, it ended around 10pm. Would have liked the option to stay in a quieter room.
Review 29:Bed uncomfortable, no mirror in bathroom, could use a general make over, afternoon staff not very friendly or helpful, no wifi access
Review 30:Breakfast, morning staff friendly & helpful
Review 31:Not sure if this was the hotel's fault or booking.com's fault - our reservation got cancelled and it costed more to re-book it (though carroll villa didn't charge us more), and we were charged 3 times for our reservation.
Review 32:The hotel is super cute and comfy, and the $30 breakfast voucher is definitely the cherry on top. We had a problem with our booking through booking.com, but the staff was super nice - found us a room and didn't charge us extra.
Review 33:Stayed 12/24/14. Booked it as it was a highly rated Bed & Breakfast. Well we got a bed but that's it. Got a email stating they were closed a few days before we arrived (after they charged my CC so couldn't back out) well when we arrive the key was left in a envelop at the door- no breakfast- no coffee-no staff- and although the bed was comfortable the room was cold and the refrigerator made noise all night. Definitely will not go back
Review 34:Location
Review 35:Great service, friendly staff, great food, Very romantic setting!!! Great time! will go back to stay again!! Room was outstanding, large, private and did I say romantic...Very!!!
Review 36:had a hard time understanding the remote control for the heater. difficult to operate, way to many buttons and timer features.
Review 37:loved our room and bathroom. Decorated with such a beautiful sleigh bed , decor dating the era, but touched with a slight modern flair, bathroom modern with plenty of room and a great shower. Fireplace sitting room in the parlor had a great selection of books and games.
Review 38:we were on the third floor [room 14] and being a mature person it was difficult to climb the stairs. but it did have its perks PEACE AND QUIET.
Review 39:breakfast was included, close to the square[within walking distance], the staff was extremely friendly.
Review 40:The bed was not comfortable and did not have heat the first night. Bathroom and showered very small and step to get into bathroom was high.
Review 41:The breakfast was good and so was location.
Review 42:The bed was horrible. Hard as a cement board. Cannot stay in room that long
Review 43:We love the old style hotel love the restaurant and half price happy hour everyday. The staff was very friendly.
Review 44:Parking is a bit of a hassle. So dropping off luggage and pick up isn't real smooth. Internet connection was very poor on the 3rd floor. But we are coming back as a first choice.
Review 45:It was our first stay and we are definitely coming back to this great property. We have eaten at the Mad Batter before and still are just wowed by the food and service. Prices for everything were a true value.
Review 46:I love the Victorian style and proximity to the beach as well as down town Cape May. In addition to its comfort the Mad Batter is a favorite restaurant!
Review 47:-- no complaints, at all!
Review 48:Comfort, excellent food, generous perks (free drinks, $30 certificate for food at the excellent Mad Batter, and free parking). Very friendly and flexible service.
Review 49:Off site parking Cramped rooms with impractical furniture and arrangements of same Uncomfortable bed Needs upgrading of rugs in hallways
Review 50:Proximity Helpfulness of staff and restaurant personnel
Review 51:I paid $149 per night for a very small room on the top floor. I was traveling alone, and only for two nights, so the size was manageable. However, I would not recommend the room for a couple. I had a friend staying in the annex, who also felt her room was claustrophobic. The bigger problem with my room was that it had only one window, in which there was a dual air conditioner/heater. Consequently, the room was very dark, and it was impossible to open the window for fresh air. I'm fairly certain that the room was never meant for habitation. I assume that other rooms in the building are nicer, and the website indicates so. $149 per night is way too much for a space that is dark and cramped. Also, the management should disclose the room size, the number of windows, and the inability to open a window when taking a reservation. I would have looked elsewhere had I know what I was getting into.
Review 52:Location a block from the beach Bar with live music
Review 53:Parking, having to park some distance away in gravel parking lot. Difficult to unload luggage and then go park.
Review 54:Wanted to stay in the Jackson Street area and this hotel is located right there at the center of things. The food was excellent and this hotel is visited for food by a good contingent of Cape May residents. The happy hour was awesome and the nightly entertainment was also great. Breakfast was also superb!
Review 55:Nothing
Review 56:Mark the owner, Matt the bartender treated us as long time friends. My wife and I will only stay at The Carroll Villa when we vacation in Cape May.
Review 57:when we arrived in the room had a bad smell that gave me a headache and the fact the bathroom down the hall, I almost had couple accidents before get to the room, other then that it was nice
Review 58:Long-term parking is free but a few blocks away (a temporary loading zone is across the street from hotel). Wifi is also free but the signal was weak and hard to pick up from our third floor room. Windows in our room would not open, so that it was difficult to dry clothes damp from the beach. There was no elevator, which might be a problem for those with heavy or bulky luggage to carry.
Review 59:This is a cross between hotel and B&B, with a friendly and helpful staff (be sure to ask them about beach access) and a great restaurant on the first floor (seating on the front porch is very pleasant on a summer evening). Location is outstanding, on a street filled with historic houses half a block from the beach and a couple of blocks from the central pedestrian mall. Hotel guests can dine in the Mad Batter Restaurant downstairs for 30% off in the evening, which makes the otherwise fairly expensive meals more reasonable. Even better is the $30/day breakfast-lunch voucher (good 8am-3pm). The food is delicious and the portions large. Although check-out is invariably 11am, there is an outside shower stall in the rear of the hotel that is very handy for guests enjoying the beach after check-out.
Review 60:Parking is at a premium. A gold cart shuttle to the Bank Street parking would have been greatly appreciated. Most of the time reservations were needed for all sittings at the restaurant or a wait was necessary.
Review 61:Convenient location to stores and beach. The Mad Batter restaurant within the B&B was an added feature. The staff was friendly and courteous especially the hostess.
Review 62:The room had a very strong mold smell. The a/c was very weak. Thebathroom was very far away and the deadbolts on door was hard to openand relock. On the bedroom it was easier because you just had to holdthe bolt back while turning the knob. And you could just pull it closed. It would be nice if they had a porch to sit out on like other B&Bs -but it's the restaurant. And there is a food smell. The food isreally excellent there but it can take an hour to get seated so it'shard/frustrating to use your food voucher. The hall rugs look dirtywhich is unappealing. No pool. Would be nice if there were a few openoutlet plugs. I had to unplug the lamp and clock to use my phone andcomputer. Parking is very far away! These things would be forgivablewith the price reflected those issues.
Review 63:The staff was very nice and let me leave my computer with them and myluggage in the front room until check in. It's extremely close toboth the beach and all the stores and restaurants in town. The room wasvery clean and the window opened.
Review 64:The room was a little small, and the bed was a little hard. But we slept pretty well all nights. Would have been nice to have a little fridge or something to stash some leftovers so we didn't have to eat out every day.
Review 65:We loved being able to walk everywhere, no car needed in such a wonderful destination. Onsite restaurant had the most delicious pancakes, loved the $30 daily food credit.
Review 66:The bed was not comfortable to me-too hard.
Review 67:This hotel is very well situated in Cape May to both beach and shopping. The furnishings are all antiques and so gorgeous. The housekeeping was excellent and the room was always ready when we came back from morning activities. The front desk personnel were very nice and helpful. The parking was not too far away.
Review 68:The private bathroom being separate from the room was kind of a pain, but my fiance didn't really mind and to be honest, it wasn't that bad. The bathroom is secure and only you can open it. The other rooms had bathrooms inside, but we are poor kids and just wanted the best deal.
Review 69:Food- The hotel gave a $30 voucher to the Mad Batter for every morning of breakfast which was great! Pancakes were delicious, among everything else there. They also offered a 30% discount on dinner there, which we did not take advantage of. Location- Less than a block from the beach and one block from the touristy shops; You really can't get much better than that. Plenty of restaurants in the vicinity, and a loading zone outside which made loading/unloading the car easy despite the general difficulty in finding parking.
Review 70:I missed having a front porch I do not like walking by the guests eating when we came and go. I would of preferred a side entrance
Review 71:But I loved the food at the Mad Batter Room was very clean
Review 72:The hotel is up front with room 5. However it is worse than you think. Noise outside window from air conditioning units turning on & off all night long. Had to keep the TV turned up to mask noise. Bed is old & uncomfortable. They are up front about the bathroom not being in your room. What they do not tell you its at the completely different end of the floor. They are up front about parking too! Not too bad of a walk....Just pray its not raining! This room was over priced for what you received. Look at it as a step above camping. A small step.
Review 73:Staff was nice, and the food was good.
Review 74:We have stayed there many times, and are always made to feel comfortable and relaxed. Staff is wonderful. Consistently good.
Review 75:Victorian style hotel close to shopping and beach.
Review 76:Zero amenities. No pool, no gym, small rooms, small uncomfortable bed. Not worth the price.
Review 77:location
Review 78:The staff were qiuck to up grade our room without asking. A very nice surprize.
Review 79:Old-world charm in ideal location. Friendly staff, excellent food.
Review 80:Location excellent Restaurant coupon for breakast which was excellent Victorian decor ComfortableW
Review 81:Nothing bad to report.
Review 82:Very friendly staff, helpful, and willing to answer questions.we loved the room.
Review 83:Parking
Review 84:People are terrific.
Review 85:The Parking is far from hotel and there are many stairs if staying on the third floor.
Review 86:The food was very good. The location is perfect.
Review 87:Stairs
Review 88:Location, breakfast full bar, live music
Review 89:The location!! Everything is nearby!
Review 90:The room was warm and clean and the bed very comfortable. The mad batter restaurant and lounge was great and friendly.
Review 91:Prety room and convenient restaurant
Review 92:Great value for the money. Will definitely book again.
Review 93:Parking and band played until ten
Review 94:Breakfast voucher
Review 95:Our first bed and breakfast. All the comforts of home, great room, comfortable, clean. Awesome!
Review 96:No parking, bathroom in the hallway not in the room, full size bed
Review 97:Location, close to restaurants and the beach
Review 98:31 steps to 3rd floor mini-suite.
Review 99:Location, food at Mad Batter,.
Review 100:Totally overpriced. Needs a good cleaning and updating.
Review 101:hallways and stairs a little outdated, room smelled a little mildewy,
Review 102:great location, friendly staff, room was nice, had character
Review 103:Comfort of room
Review 104:No elevator
Review 105:Location, cleanliness, walk to everything and great breakfasts.
Review 106:Much nicer accommodations right next store for a comparable price.
Review 107:Bath access a slight inconvenience - part of the B&B atmosphere of the accomodations
Review 108:Amenities including - restaurant both "porch" overlooking Jackson Street; Garden restaurrant and lounge (great Happy Hour" value. Proximity to beach and "Village" shopping area.
Review 109:Great location...close to Washington Mall...less than a block from the beach...great happy hour, and fabulous dinner......beautifully decorated rooms.
Review 110:The windows in the room were drafty and the water damage (corner of the room-ceiling and side wall? needs to be taken care of. Room #4
Review 111:The location to all the stores and restaurants. The breakfast was very good. Staff was friendly.
Review 112:Not crazy about the window unit air conditioner, but it did the job on a very hot day!
Review 113:Loved the way this charming old hotel was decorated and how the rooms were appointed: mine had original paintings of the area that were very well chosen.
Review 114:How I was treated by staff over vouchers for breakfast, that I only was able to get once out of my 5 day stay. Bathroom being down the hall got annoying too mid-way through.
Review 115:The room.
Review 116:I don't have anything.
Review 117:This was a very clean hotel with an accommodating staff. The location is great. Also, the restaurant below is outstanding!
Review 118:Long stair flight with a heavy bag a "dumb waiter" or someassist with a heavy bag would be helpful.
Review 119:Cleanliness, temperature and bed comfort
Review 120:No on-site parking.....supplied permit parking 10 min walk. B & B must be able to handle stairs
Review 121:Location..1/2 block fm beach...1/2 block fm shopping district. In historic district. Restaurant & bar are great.
Review 122:The limited menu, since I stayed for a week -- but everything on the menu was ample and delicious. It also took a while to get used to climbing 35 steps to my room because there is no elevator, but exercise is a good thing.
Review 123:The quiet, during the day and at night. Also the location, half block from the beach and two blocks from the outdoor mall. Finally, the historic ambiance with a modern, comfortable bed. OK, one more: the arrangement with The Mad Batter is very enticing to eat there, especially for breakfast.
Review 124:Not a complaint, but you would get a smell of natural gas now and then.I would assume that is due to the natural gas used in the street lightsand the Villa itself.
Review 125:Victorian Home / Breakfast was excellent! Staff was very hospitable, and friendly too.Very relaxing! Would visit again!
Review 126:If I HAD to find a problem our third floor shower controls were slow to react. Got plenty of hot water after a few minutes but to be expected out of such an old building.
Review 127:150 year old victorian hotel that had modern comforts. The building had its creaks but made the expierence even better to stay in a piece of history.
Review 128:Wished we could have stayed longer!! ( not your fault)
Review 129:The staff was friendly and helpful...(even when our bottle opener brokein the cork..then theirs did too Funny.... But they got it opened).Thefood was excellent! It was romantic(we ate by the fireplace) and theentertainment was awesome..We had the room with the porch and It was sonice to sit outside(even though it was snowing). We will be back.... Irecommend anyone that wants a great get away to go...Close to all theshops too!
Review 130:There was nothing that we disliked about the Caroll Villa Hotel stay.
Review 131:The location for cape may was great. The staff was more then perfect in everyway. We had a wonderful 4 day stay at the Caroll Villa Hotel in Cape May. We would for sure visit there again while vacationing in Cap May. Ginny & Joe
