Reviews for Hotel Macomber
Review 1:Advertised that they had a nice flat screen TV and cable, but the TV was the size of a laptop screen and by "cable" they mean 3 channels. Had to leave to watch the college football playoff games which was very disappointing.
Review 2:Great location, beach front.
Review 3:Room was kind of small. No chair to sit on if you wanted to read. Also no breakfast. A little disappointed.
Review 4:Loved the view and location. The price wasn't bad either.
Review 5:Beds squeak like crazy, which may become very irritating. The bathroom was very small but it's to be expected in such an old building I assume
Review 6:The rooms we're cozy and had very clean comfortable linens
Review 7:maybe because it was offseason, but some advice and recommendations made by staff were off the mark.
Review 8:Staff was nice, location for our stay was excellent.
Review 9:Room a little stuffy, carrying luggage 3 flights of stairs (though Marie helped me carry my things.) Ocean view was ok. I would have been willing to book a cheaper room, view of the ocean wasn't worth it.
Review 10:Nice room, friendly, helpful staff.
Review 11:Walls were paper thin. The beds were uncomfortable. The bath products were a very poor quality. They had one Keurig coffee pot for the entire hotel and they often didn't have supplies for that. They also shut it down when the coffee shop below was open. There was no bathroom in the lobby area and our room was up several flights of stairs with no elevator. Staff didn't come in until 9am and often had no idea what was going on in town. I am amazed that they have an 8.1 rating, as I am not very picky about hotels. The structure and entry areas are charming, but that is where the charm ends. After that it is about like staying at a low end chain.
Review 12:The location was very good.
Review 13:The staff was friendly and efficent. The location is great right by everything we wanted to do. We didn't have to move the car out of the parking lot - which was also a plus.
Review 14:TV was so small you could not see it from across the room in bed, remote for TV did not work, Cleanliness was fair at best. Antiquated facilities in need of upgrading. Staff at front desk barely responded when we told him about the TV remote, didn't say two words otherwise during check-in. Portable air-conditioning unit buzzed all night. Could here every movement from rooms above and next door. So sleep was not good.
Review 15:We got engaged at the Macomber, so it will always have a special place in our hearts
Review 16:Be prepared to climb steps and if you want a spacious bathroom this isn't the place.
Review 17:Location was very good, close to the beach yet within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
Review 18:Unfortunately, I should have asked for a room on a lower floor as my husband had a difficult time climbing so many stairs.
Review 19:I liked the location. Near the beach and within walking distance of restaurants and town center.
Review 20:The biggest issue we had was a musty smell in our room that smacked you in the face every time you walked in. We thought it might have been the bedding so we asked that they change the sheets and the hotel complied. Unfortunately the issue remained. We understand that it's an old place but given the rate, it should be better.
Review 21:It's a very charming and historic hotel right along the beach. The front porch, with the wicker seating, was quite inviting. We found it to be a convenient location. Our room was decorated nicely. The staff was responsive.
Review 22:The Macomber was everything that I expected it would be from the description. It was wonderful waking up to a view of the sun rising in the morning. It was a comfortable place to stay with a magnificent front porch with an ocean view.
Review 23:Lack of quality facilities on site - to compliment the room - No Proper Breakfast Room - no facilities to make a cup of tea The room smelled of disinfectant ( Avery strange smell) - the Air conditioner Vented the moisture in the system every 60 Seconds - all night long
Review 24:Central location
Review 25:Outdated rooms and poor decor. Bathroom in need of major overhaul. Tiny shower stall with shower curtain that was pink from mold at the bottom and water spilled out over the floor. Pedestal sink had no room on top for personal stuff. Bedding and mattresses felt old and cheap. Tiny TV did not make watching television at night comfortable. For the price, it should have at least included a simple breakfast, but no breakfast.
Review 26:Great location across from the beach. Friendly and helpful front desk staff. Nice wrap-around porch to sit and read at night. Great restaurant on-site.Upon request was given a room with two queen sized beds instead of the full sized beds advertised on their website, and I really appreciated that.
Review 27:We didn't mind walking up stairs to our room on top floor but people who don't do stairs well should avoid this hotel; no elevators here.
Review 28:Location. Front porch with rocking chairs.
Review 29:The stairs to the 3rd floor were rough at times. I wish I could have used my Spider-Man webs to be hauled up and into a window in 3o9.
Review 30:Beach front, parking, close to everything.
Review 31:There was no elevator and we stayed on the third floor so it was a haul to go up the steps. The wifi signal was very week.
Review 32:The staff was very friendly and helpful. Had an issue with the refrigerator and it was resolved right away. The place was right across from the beach and the room was very nice and clean. Love the history behind the hotel.
Review 33:We didn't appreciate that we had to pay to get on the beach. We found out that other properties had a relationship with the beach in which you just showed you key and you were provided with entrance and a chair. That is something we think should be included with your stay. We didn't see where we could have breakfast (except the store outside - which we were told were separate from property)?
Review 34:The fact that we could just walk across the street to the beach. We enjoyed the canopy bed. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
Review 35:I did not like walking up 3 flights of stairs with all my luggage. This hotel has no elevator. I realize it is a historic building so maybe they are not allowed to install an elevator. But for the price charged with no other amenities, not even a small coffee pot to heat water for tea or coffee, they should at least provide help with luggage up all those stairs.
Review 36:I liked the cleanliness of the hotel.
Review 37:no elevator, two retired people had a hard time bringing luggage up and down 4 flights... no bathroom on the first floor, the restaurant area had the bathroom and you were not allowed to go when it was closed.
Review 38:close to the beach nice walking area, walk to the mall at Washington street easy... walk to everything.
Review 39:Shower was substandard, was told "due for renovation. Room was on third floor, 51 steps up. Would ask for room on first or second floor if possible.
Review 40:Location on beach at Cape May great
Review 41:Hair in bathroom..strong urine smell..sink wouldn't drain. However..I have stayed here before with no issues at all.
Review 42:Location was excellent..staff friendly and accommodating!
Review 43:The bed was too soft & the AC would go through the process of on & off but it was noisy throughout the night.
Review 44:I loved the porch and the location.
Review 45:the beds and pillows were very uncomfortable.
Review 46:the best part of this hotel is it's location. right across the street from the beach and walking distance to most other places
Review 47:Pricey with no "perks". Would have liked beach tags and coffee included.
Review 48:Location was perfect, across the street from beach, able to walk to restaurants and shops.
Review 49:The pillows were hard and the mattress did not support my husband and I though we are only of average size. A coffee maker would be nice.
Review 50:The location, staff and Union Park restaurant were excellent.
Review 51:We were not happy with the room. No closet or table. Much smaller than I remrmber. Shower stall leaked out onto floor. Halls were very musty. We booked two rooms for same price. Second room had table and a real closet. What happened to the bathtubs?
Review 52:We love your hotel. We have stayed in the past. It is alwAys very clean. Excellent restaurant.
Review 53:Mattresses were bigger then the bed frame, uncomfortable and dangerous. Shower curtain on the floor when we arrived. Bottle of hand soap super sized on tiny sink.
Review 54:- Very small bathroom in desperate need of update - No water pressure - Furnishings in two-bed rooms have seen better days
Review 55:- Excellent location - Old World feel - Very friendly and helpful staff
Review 56:The rooms smelled like mildew. The staff were not very pleasant overall and not very on top of pleasing customers.
Review 57:The location and price were excellent.
Review 58:The stairs!!! The hotel has no elevator and it takes forever to get luggage up them. Fortunately, an extremely helpful staff member helped me and refused a tip. There also were dehumidifiers in the hall that we had to empty.
Review 59:A wonderful old hotel right opposite the beach.
Review 60:The bathroom and shower was a little small. Also had planned on eating dinner at the union park restaurant, but it was closes the night we went. We also recieved no free breakfast. A tad pricy as well.
Review 61:The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They allowed us to check in early and leave our car in the parking lot the day we checked out so we could go to the beach. The hotel is in a prime location.
Review 62:Bed a little to hard, walls were thin you can hear someone coughing in next room. Wish they had a pool
Review 63:Very clean, Staff was very nice to us, close to the beach. I would go back again !
Review 64:We stayed on the top floor. The steps were tough. We thought of it as good exercise.
Review 65:Location, location, location! Friendly staff. Clean, pleasant room.
Review 66:We wish there was a continental breakfast or at least coffee in the morning, but it was good to have the bagel shop right outside to go to instead of having to drive somewhere.
Review 67:We loved the charms of the historic hotel, and the big porch. We loved the location right across from beach, and being able to ride our bikes and walk everywhere. And the online deal we got!!!
Review 68:Beach tags not included in price. There was no coffee available in the morning. We were on the third floor and there was no elevator.
Review 69:Location is right on the beach and within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Room was clean and was perfect size for a two night stay for two people. Parking was free.
Review 70:We arrived late ( 10:00 pm ) for check in and the key was waiting for us at the front desk which was nice. The room and location was perfect for Me, My wife and 9 month old daughter. Rooms were clean and can not bet the value. We will stay again.....
Review 71:The website makes it look luxurious. It is a far cry from luxury. Noshampoo, no tissues, no phone, no elevator, no coffee, no brkfst. Youweren't allowed to open windows because the air conditioning wouldbreak. It was fine but for $300 a night I expected more.
Review 72:Location is perfect--very easy walk to the beach and all restaurants, etc. Our room was very clean except one of the bed sheets had a biggrease smear or something. We asked to have it changed and they didright away
Review 73:- Poor Service * exception was a woman working the check-in desk on the late afternoon of June 26th (on two separate occasions she could not help us and did not even point us in the right direction) - we stayed 3 nights and NEVER had a cleaning person come in to change linens, towel, trash, or refresh supplies * twice I spoke to a cleaning person (she said she was not for our floor) that said she'd pass the message on but she gave me trash bags to take out my own trash. We saw the cleaning/do not disturb signs on the door knobs of other rooms but we did not have one and mentioned this as well. - NO PHONE NO COFFEE MAKER -at this day in age EVERY hotel room should have a small coffee maker and a phone in it. The phone can even be a direct line to the front desk.
Review 74:- Hotel room was bright, clean, & functional - staff majority was competent & helpful - the availability of ice and Tea Time coffee shop was nice and affordable
Review 75:Nothing.
Review 76:The room was clean, and the beds very comfortable. The best part however is the location of the hotel directly across the street from the beach. Also, they kindly allowed us to continue parking our car in the free lot for the afternoon after we checked out.
Review 77:We heard children screaming at midnight, a couple having sex at 1am and a domestic disturbance from 1230-230 am - all like they were in the room with us! No sound insulation at all.
Review 78:Location was good and it was clean.
Review 79:Breakfast at the bodega downstairs was expensive and they don't accept credit card.
Review 80:The space was perfect for a beach get away. Beautiful room, comfortable bed.
Review 81:We had two rooms, One had an air conditioner that was very noisy, kept us awake at night. Also, you can hear everything & people were not quiet.
Review 82:Convenience, friendly staff, loved the Bagel shop in the building. Overall great experience for price.
Review 83:Too close to the arcade across the street if you like to just sit on the porch.
Review 84:Convenient location. Very near to sites, the beach and restaurants. Parking was also very convenient.
Review 85:This was the perfect place to stay in Cape May, beautiful building, great location, comfortable bed, just steps from the beach. Couldn't have asked for a better hotel.
Review 86:Bed was really firm. Hard for a side sleeper like me but overall, all the greats out weighed sleeping on the hard bed for 3 nights.
Review 87:Loved the location. Staff was awesome and very friendly!
Review 88:Well, parking was rough. It's a small lot. Also, stairs... Many of them. We kind of didn't pack light not knowing how the weather would be. So bring one or two small bags.
Review 89:This bed and breakfast was very cute, and located beach front. A mini golf, small boardwalk, shops and the beach were right there. I enjoyed waking up to the sound of the seagulls each morning.
Review 90:The only "inconvenience" was the lack of space for toiletries in the bathroom. A small wicker table with a shelf would make it easier to keep items handy.
Review 91:The location, the comfort and, most of all, the staff was welcoming and pleasant. I didn't have the opportunity to eat at the restaurant because my stay was before Union Park opened. I'm looking forward to eating there on my next trip.
Review 92:The AC didn't work. It was warm in the room and we couldn't get it to cool off.
Review 93:The location of the property is why I booked the getaway there. The history of course! I believe our room was haunted because the bed netting absolutely moved on its own while my companion and I were talking and lying in bed.
Review 94:The staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything was so very clean! It was nice to have the coffee machine in the lobby. A very added plus when you need that little cup after being out all day.
Review 95:Room was quite small.
Review 96:Location was fabulous! Hotel is on the Historic Register. The website and email message from the hotel prior to the visit were very clear about accessibility and steps. It was as expected. Easy parking.
Review 97:Everything was in walking distance, the restaurant in the hotel was amazing and everyone was very friendly. We are currently planning our next trip to cape may and will be staying there again. There is also a lot of history in the hotel which was really cool to find out about.
Review 98:The only complaint was a bit of a moldy smell in the carpet....could use a change
Review 99:Hotel overall was quite nice. Didn't try the restaurant because we wanted to venture out around the town. Staff was polite and helpful (and are certainly from some far and away exotic places)
Review 100:Breakfast not included No coffee machines in room
Review 101:Location Although an older hotel, the rooms were a decent size, bathroom small Clean Good value
Review 102:Keep in mind that this is an old hotel and some of its charms are old. Bathroom, tight shower stall and toilet. Water heater made some interesting noise.
Review 103:Location, just across the street from the beach and 3 blocks from the heart of Cape May. Comfortable Bed. Great Value.
Review 104:Carpet was damp and the room was humid with a mildew smell. Very disappointed, for the overall cost and will stay somewhere else on the next visit.
Review 105:Location
Review 106:access to bathroom outside of the rented room, more rockers out front, chairs in room very useless, no small table in room
Review 107:location, breakfast shop, bike rental, restaurant great but pricey, plenty of off street parking
Review 108:The mattress was harder than we are used to sleeping on, so it took some getting used to. The air conditioner made a loud intermittent buzzing noise that woke my husband up several times each night. And he usually sleeps like a rock. It did not bother me after I got used to it though.
Review 109:The room was lovely with the romantic white netting draped around the bed and the swan towel sculpture placed sweetly on the bed. Everything was very nice and clean. I loved the close proximity to the beach. It was so relaxing to sit on the big front porch in the rocking chairs with the sound of the sea drifting in. We were really happy that our room was on the first floor, especially since there is no elevator.
Review 110:Room small. No place to put toiletries in bathroom. Could hear the gentleman in the adjacent room snoring and blowing his nose - right through the wall. Bed was uncomfortable and room temperature inconsistent.
Review 111:Location. Across from beach and walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Pretty property. Old but lots of character.
Review 112:Not exactly a dislike, since the hotel warns guests they do not have an elevator. After a long day walking through the town, the 20 or so stairs between each floor are a bit tough on older, achy knees. But if you want a true feeling for old Cape May, you shouldn't expect an elevator anyway.
Review 113:An old-fashioned, historic hotel that gives an idea of what Cape May was like a century ago that's across the street from the beach. Restaurant and coffee/bagel shop are in the hotel. Memory foam mattresses provide comfort and support. All staff will do their best to satisfy their guests' needs.
Review 114:Would like to be able to select a specific room when booking. There are lovely photos of all the rooms, but you can't choose the one you want. They are up front about telling you there is no elevator, but they should have bellhops to assist with luggage.
Review 115:The front porch was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view. Staff was accommodating, switching our room on request so that we weren't next to the stairwell. Very conveniently located, close to the beach, restaurants and shops.
Review 116:I wish that there was an elevator and not just stairs. It was a little hard at times to climb them but overall the stay there was great.
Review 117:The rooms were really nice and the beds were comfortable.
Review 118:No elevator made it a little inconvenient with luggage.
Review 119:Great location...just across from the beach and a few blocks walking distance to shopping. Beautiful historic accommodations. Clean.
Review 120:too many steps!!! They should have someone to carry your bags up and down all those steps! I'm sure they would get a lot of tips!!!
Review 121:cleaning staff was very friendly and did a good job.
Review 122:Long climb upstairs to room, no elevator. Bathroom needs updating.
Review 123:Excellent location, across the street from Convention Hall. I loved sitting on the porch, relaxing, across from the boardwalk. An easy walk across the street to the beach. Easy access parking.
Review 124:The Convention Hall blocked the view of the beach. There was no coffee maker in the room, nor any offered in the lobby. Bathroom was small and dark.
Review 125:Inn is across from the beach and handy to bike/surry rental, bars, restaurants and shops. Bed was comefortable. Decor was charming.
Review 126:The hallways, room decor and furnishings need to be updated. There was a faint smell of mildew in the room. The shower was tiny and no hand soap or shampoo was provided (although there was a prominent note in the bathroom that if guests forgot anything, the desk staff would provide it - just ask).
Review 127:The location was excellent. The staff was friendly and efficient, although not too personable. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but friends highly recommended it.
Review 128:Not really a welcoming place, a set of rules and regulations was sent to us prior to our stay. Kind of a cold experience. Our room only had a peekaboo of the sea. The room itself was clean enough, not sparkling, but cheesily decorated, tiny tv, no real amenities, tiny soaps, no shampoo, two washcloths and towels. No coffee in the room, etc. No extras, just very minimum of what they have to do to be a hotel.
Review 129:Right on the beach, Macomber is convenient for beach going. The restaurant is great, truly. The Coffee shop not so much. Location location reputation.
Review 130:Water pressure in shower low, continuous noise from vent at night, not enough trash receptacles
Review 131:Cleanliness, Bike rental, Bagel Shop, proximity to beach
Review 132:I liked everything - if I had to make a suggestion for improvement would be to service the mini fridge in room 23 - was making some squealing noise - prob just needs routine maintenance - everything else was awesome during our stay!
Review 133:Location of hotel right next to the beach and close to walking district; Parking included; Staff was super nice & accommodating; Clean room; Nice pricing for location; Porch sitting was relaxing in the morning; Bagel and coffee shop open every morning right in basement of property; Ordered to go from in-house restaurant one evening and they were quick and accommodating even though they looked really busy!
Review 134:The hotel seems dated and could use a makeover soon. There was dust caked into the wicker room furniture and the TV was about the size of a laptop. The shower stall is tiny, the ceiling had cracks in it. Also we noticed a slight musty smell in the room. Overall I would rate it a 7/10.
Review 135:Location is unbeatable. The in-house restaurant, Union Park, was very good. The wi-fi was spotty. The beds and pillows were very comfortable.
Review 136:The beds are very uncomfortable, it felt like we were sleeping on a box spring not a mattress. Very difficult to sleep on them. The blankets were not warm and were very old with holes in them. The room had a musky smell to it. Too many stairs to get to your room.
Review 137:The location was convenient to the beach, shops and restaurants.
Review 138:Unfortunately, since it was built in 1911, it does not have an elevator, which makes it necessary to carry luggage up the stairs. The lobby is a full flight up from the ground level. My room was two flights up from the lobby, so we carried our bags up three flights of stairs. Also there are only sheer, lacy curtains on the windows and no heavy drapes which can be closed. Consequently, the early morning sun shone brightly into the room making it difficult to sleep past dawn.
Review 139:The staff was friendly, helpful and courteous. The location couldn't have been better. It is right across from the Arcade and Convention Center. There is a lovely dining room and convenient breakfast and lunch cafe in the hotel.
Review 140:The hotel was a little noisy, sometimes making it difficult to sleep. But I realize this is due to the old construction. The bathroom has no fan and the door was a little ajar, giving little privacy. It would have been nice to have coffee service in the morning or even a continental breakfast. The restaurant was a little pricy, although we did not eat there to say if it was worth it. There were quite a few cigar smokers on the front porch every evening, one time we could not even stay out there because the smell was so strong. Suggest a non-smoking part of the porch.
Review 141:I liked the proximity to the beach, and that there were activities to do and restaurants all within walking distance. The hotel was charming and romantic, the staff were very friendly and helpful. I liked that you could bring a bottle of wine and sit in the front porch in rocking chairs in the evening, watching the people walk by while relaxing. There is a bagel place with coffee right below the hotel for the morning. I would stay here again because we enjoyed our stay so much!
Review 142:The bed in one room was stiff, and the AC "whirred" every 30 seconds in the first room we stayed in. But we were allowed to switch rooms midstay, which was much better!
Review 143:Hotel Macomber exceeded my expectations greatly. The staff was superb and the rooms were pretty, and it's location made it super convenient to the beach. We loved being there so much that Marie helped us book an extra night and allowed us to a better room in the middle of our stay! Check out the suite if you need a larger room for a family stay. It was gorgeous and had a great view of the ocean!
