Reviews for Copthorne Hotel & Resort Bay Of Islands
Review 1:Shower in bathroom no pressure at all very weak. Couldn't get the allocated room which we requested before arrival. Misleading promise of allocation. I think these days in the name of eco friendly businesses are trying to save overhead expenses.
Review 2:Location
Review 3:The Double Bed was actually 2 singles together which caused some discomfort in the night (though it was booked as a twin/double room which may have made a difference) Checkout queues took quite some time, but the staff were amazing.
Review 4:Beautiful facilities, will have to try the spa/ pool next time, our stay wasn't long enough to try them out. We stayed for a wedding and the staff throughout were absolutely wonderful.
Review 5:Fairly average accommodation for 4-star prices. Dinner buffet was poor - in both selection and quality (some of the food served was not properly cooked and when we politely pointed this out, staff did not appear overly appreciative).
Review 6:Great location right next the the Waitangi Treaty grounds and a pleasant stroll into the main Paihia strip. We had a very pleasant sea view room.
Review 7:Facilities are very basic. No aircon. Other guests on our balcony /verandah. Very noisy from both neighbours and floor above. Fridge was turned off to save money. Beds are extremely sub standard. Check out line was at least 30 people long. Cleaning staff left verandah door unlocked. Nowhere near enough parking available.
Review 8:Great location.
Review 9:The rooms we were given at the end of the wing and out onto lawn with small children were so great. The resort feeling in the summer is fab with activities at times during the day but not too much. So relaxing!!
Review 10:The room was not very clean (especially the carpet) when we arrived, it was very hot at night and we had to buy fly spray as there were mosquitoes in the room continually. Summer time you expect mosquitoes in NZ but they were particularly persistent and numerous. The ceiling fan, even on low speed, created too much draft over the beds at night and there was no aircon. The room wasn't cleaned properly once in the 4 days we were there. The twin room was quite a noisy room with a generator or pump in the ceiling above our door. Nearby rooms had groups of guests who visited rooms next to ours well into the night - when they shut the doors (the door closers were really strong & the doors slammed shut) it disturbed us.
Review 11:The location in Waitangi is excellent with access to the beach, a small tennis court, swimming pool & a restaurant with room service, a pay self-service laundry. There was also a courtesy mini-shuttle which took guests into Paihia (a 7 minute journey) every hour on the half houAfter that the Taxi fare from Paihia was NZ$8 back to the hotel. We were a group of 4 adults with a twin & a double room - we booked 4 nights. The rooms had a bedroom with a separate bathroom (shower over bath). Each room came with a bar fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, a flat screen TV, a petite table and 2 large cane chairs, a desk/dressing table and 2 side tables, etc.The decor was average and there was a ceiling fan which had adjustable speed. Each room had a small allocated patio area with 2 canvas chairs. There was very limited free WiFi at Reception and also WiFi at $10 per day. Buffet dinner was NZ$35 for a Thai buffet and Breakfast was NZ$26.50 per person. There was also a bar facility. The courtesy vehicle was a boon as we were able to buy groceries in Paihia which also has a food market every Friday night.Staff were very friendly and courteous throughout our stay.
Review 12:The hotel was noisy with some guests was drinking and laughing till after mid night. The pool is really bad, It is not a pool as such its like an artificial water falls with a lot of weeds inside it, wasn't clean at all.
Review 13:LOCATION IS REALLY GOOD WITH LARGE open garden and with accessibility to the sea.
Review 14:Unfortunately there was always a shortage of towels at the pool and tended to take a while to re-stock. The room we had was a little dated , scruffy in places and had no wine glasses. One last thing there was no air conditioning just a roof fan which made for a hot nights sleep in summer.
Review 15:The location is great and the kids loved the pools. Great sized T.V. Probably worth spending a little more to get one of the water front updated rooms.
Review 16:The bed wasnt very comfortable. No cooking facilities.not enough seating in room.
Review 17:The most beautiful views if ur lucky to have a room by the sea front. Location good.great facilities.
Review 18:The toilet didn't have toilet brush which is quite absurd taking into account the money we paid for our stay there. Wi-Fi connection was not working at all.
Review 19:Nice and helpful receptionists. Good location. Clean and neat room.
Review 20:The staff at reception couldn't answer any questions on most topics about either the hotel or tourist destinations.
Review 21:James was awesome, helpful and full of great information.
Review 22:standard family room's décor is a bit dated and comfort level not up for a 4 star hotel.
Review 23:location, beautiful surroundings, and awesome pool and spa.
Review 24:The service I received when trying to order a coffee from the café was very poor. There was girl on and she was clearly busy (which is fine) but she did not greet us or tell us she would be a moment. we stood there and waited for roughly ten minutes, while she put beans in the coffee machine and made coffees. Then she finally said "Hi" and served us. I feel as though you are paying a great amount to stay at a beautiful place and the service from the staff should reflect that.
Review 25:The location and pool/spa aea
Review 26:You can thank Lorraine for the bad staff rating, everyone else was fine. She must think she's the boss of the whole resort the way she talks. Maybe the staff need some refresher customer service training as the service has slipped. I stayed here about a year ago and the customer service was outstanding. Peak season prices were not good value for money. I would definitely return as the location is outstanding and the majority of the staff try their best.
Review 27:The pool is definitely a draw card and the beds were really comfortable.
Review 28:It took 15 mins just to get helped at the front desk and then we had to wait 45 mins for our room to be cleaned. The water pressure in shower was non existent and no there's no lighting on walkway/deck at night so my spouse actually tripped and fell on the concrete step and cut her legs up pretty bad. You also have to pay for the Internet !!! Who does that nowadays? And to top off that it's only 500MB which isn't allot of you have to do any sort of business stuff.
Review 29:Nice views from room and grounds are nice.
Review 30:we had spiders in the room. sliding door between ground floor balcony and bed room was not functioning property. internet in the lobby did not work properly.
Review 31:good property
Review 32:All the tables and chairs in my room didn't sit flat anywhere (always rocked which isn't good when doing paperwork). My light were flickering and the bathroom was a disabled one so you don't really have a shower.. Just an open room with a shower head.
Review 33:Big bathroom, in a quiet area. Comfortable.
Review 34:No cutlery or toaster. $100 bond that we were unaware about but had to pay as well as the $382.40 for our room. Bathroom flooring needed a bit of a spruce up.
Review 35:The whole place is awesome, the views, the pool, the comfortable beds, the people that work there (although we were questioned numerous times if we were staying there). Breakfast was delicious.
Review 36:Expensive wifi, slow service in bar area. 4 stars is a bit over rated for a small room without A/C.
Review 37:The view, location and pool. Good food at buffet dinner, but breakfast could include NZ fresh fruit.
Review 38:Old facilities.. Needs a facelift. No plate or cutlery in room when I asked or one they said no. Less room facilities than a motel, small shower over bath, dreary bathroom. Noisy room near the pool. Closed pool at times due to a leak and Jack hammered at 9.30am, again poor resort maintenance. Room key didn't work and they didn't fix while we were there. Given 1 master key to use. NO FREE WiFi the only place in NZ we encountered this.
Review 39:Comfortable bed
Review 40:Our rooms was not cleaned I morning though we did put card out to be cleaned. We constantly had to ask for supplements to be topped up like milk, coffee and toilet paper.
Review 41:The food was good. Though the staff was not friendly.
Review 42:The hotel is looking tired. The pool complex was dirty, especially the spa, which needed a full makeover. Carpets needed cleaning and the bar area was dirty. Breakfast was very ordinary and I would have thought that, in this day and age, free wifi for guests would have been available.
Review 43:Great location!
Review 44:Each morning the cleaning ladies knocked on our door and opened it to come in even though we didn't put room service sign up. On check out morning they did this well before check out time. We found both of these times inappropriate
Review 45:Our room was upgraded to the beach view/pool view with king size bed. Beautiful room. Love the pool and spa, as well as the beautiful tropical setting
Review 46:For $280 per night I expected more.room was small ceiling obviously had a leak at some stage and was never re painted. The room wad tired.
Review 47:Staff were good and location
Review 48:Great walks around the immediate area. Loved the outlook of the sea views and garden. Loved seeing wildlife on the lawns - rabbits and quail. Close proximity to Paihia and the ferry to Russell.
Review 49:No airconditioner.. no mirror apart from bathroom so waited for Mister to come out of bathroom to use the mirror.. room very hot ..
Review 50:Away from the hustle of tourist
Review 51:The restaurant really lets the amazing complex down- the average quality of the food.. The meals sound great on paper but the desserts especially were not fresh. I would suggest dining out
Review 52:Amazing pool area, great staff, and lovely grounds
Review 53:I didn't like that I had to pay a extra $50 because I had a debit card, room was cramped and they should have tv in each room ,
Review 54:The pool area was amazing .. Liked that we could get extra towels at the pool area and the staff Brought our food out to the pool.the bed was super comfy.
Review 55:The fact that we were moved to a room (due to toilet not flushing in room first given) where the sheets had not been chabged and room not cleaned ( dirty pillows table tops). Despite alerting management no acknowledgement received of issue!!! Restaurant could not cope with Xmas dinner which was 3 starters 3 mains and 3 desserts. Definitely low quality service. Receptionists and supervisor were good.
Review 56:Parking was so bad . they lock others exits after 9:30. So you have to parking behind the build and walk away to the main door.and no lights on the car parking.
Review 57:Location is very good .
Review 58:We had requested a Christmas evening dinner with our initial booking. No confirmation was forthcoming and it required a telephone call to confirm. This was further confirmed when we booked in. However we were given a table at 6.50pm and finally received our main course meal (which was a disappointment) at 8.30pm and final course at 8.50pm. We understand that additional bookings were taken by the restaurant and pre-allocated tables given to the latecomers. Furthermore preferential treatment was given to the "bar" food which did not require pre-bookings.
Review 59:Staff were courteous and helpful. No steps to get luggage to room.
Review 60:The reception girl when I checked in was a bit disappointing , she's a bit loud and impatient to my question and gave out wrong information
Review 61:The reception girl when I checked out was very polite and friendly, I like her and thank for her nice service.
Review 62:The wifi was a nightmare. Knowing that my travel data plan was abt to run out, we signed up for the 3-day plan & pd NZD30. We checked in at almost 7pm & were exhausted after a long drive from Coromandel. Only managed to check a few emails, FB & son played game on the ipad for a while & when I woke up at 4am, the data has run out!! The so-called free lobby access was terribly insufficient. Ran out much too soon earlier than the promised half hour, Really believe that wifi has become an essential & the resort has to urgently looked into providing free unlimited access if it wants to go to the next level. Many of my frds are eagerly waiting my recommendation for their trip to the Bay of Island & this appaling lack of wifi access is the only thing behind my reluctance to recommend. The rest top-notch!
Review 63:Cassie (or Callie) the young front office lady was excellent. She accommodated my various requests - tours etc, promptly & always with a smile. Also recommended a few activities for me to do for my 25th Wedding Anniv on the 20th when we were there, Love that the meat - chicken & beef was halal - that was a nice surprise & the staff went the extra mile to verify with the chef
Review 64:Poor cleanliness in bathroom (E.G. dead cockroach just left it thereafter housekeeping service my room, hair stick on toilet seat lid andfloor.. Obviously housekeeping use a dirty cloth to clean it). Missingwater cattle..thought reception sort out some of these problem later butno apologies and no one actually check back with me.. Please do yourbasic stuff better if your room is already out of date. Will not beback, will not recommend this hotel to anyone
Review 65:Good location and hotel spaGood price, big TV in room
Review 66:Not being aware of the bond payment on arrival. And then having to phone Copthorne several times chasing up the bond which took two weeks to be credited back into my account.
Review 67:Lovely place, great location and amenities. Certainly get breakfast with your stay, it is the best breakfast I have had in awhile.
Review 68:Very noisy, lots of guests luggage was mostly crates of beer and theypartied well into the night. Housekeeping left my patio doors open allday and I was on the ground floor! Management conspicuous by theirabsence insultingly offered two beers,as compensation.Food was onlyaverage but expensive.
Review 69:Temperature control was average. Luckily we didn't really need it
Review 70:The staff were really pleasant to deal with. Had an amazing sea view room. Ordered room service which was great. High quality food for a fair price.
Review 71:Not bad experience, but would be good to have air conditioning. Even with the ceiling fan going still found it stuffy.
Review 72:Location was great e.g the view, also quiet and relaxing.
Review 73:Reception staff when checking in, ignored us for quite sometime while he was looking up details for the Health Spa lady. The room was really dated & the fans extremely noisy. Could not leave it going overnight & the room was really stuffy.
Review 74:Breakfast in the restaurant was good.
Review 75:We did not like having to pay for wifi internet
Review 76:The hotel is very comfortable. Best, it is located right beside the Waitangi Treaty grounds. The food is excellent
Review 77:Beautiful room and lovely view. Could've done with a microwave and a spa bath in a suite. The pool area is awesome. Staff was overall ver helpful apart from one incident with a receptionist but we did enjoy our stay. Thankyou
Review 78:The service in the restaurant was mediocre as the staff seemed to inadequately trained to serve the al a cart menu items e.g. the person who delivered our steaks to the table could not identify the difference between rare and medium rare.
Review 79:The room was comfortable and value for money
Review 80:The room we stayed in had water on the floor by the fridge. Was told by a staff that I would get free upgrade but nothing was done. There was so much noise from the room next door after 2.00am. People drinking, shouting, etc. Asked for the room to be cleaned, there was no replenished of soap, shampoo, etc. Beddings were not changed at all. The extra bed in the room was not at all a good bed, wobbly not worth paying $40 extra per night for that bed. The Restuarant staff I called to order cake hung up saying they will call back later but did not call at all, as was rushing and did not bother taking my contact numbers. It was my son in laws birthday and I wanted to give him a surprise dinner with cake but because of the lack of service from the staff in the restaurant, I had to come back home to organise a cake and his birthday celebration. We were also charged twice for the same things and had to sort it out at the reception. A real bad experience especially for my son in law as this was their first family holiday.
Review 81:I liked the location. Room service was awesome. Cassie the staff we dealt on the phone was very lovely and nice to talk to. The only staff who knew what she was doing and very polite and friendly.
Review 82:No Spa on Check In Next day Spa was not warm enough Bathroom needs renovation. Could not have a bath - as it looked quit dirty. Could not shower properly as the shower head is not adjustable. Had to put head and body against wall to get a proper shower. Was quiet annoying after been out all day and needed to have a good shower and relax.
Review 83:Good Location. Safe Convenient to Carpark Water view
Review 84:We had a lovely stay here, facilities are great and the restaurant meal we had at dinner was great, the food was beautiful, compliments to the chef and our waitress was pretty awesome too.
Review 85:When we booked via internet we told these were the last rooms available , when in fact there were lots of room available , much nicer rooms than we got so we were very disappointed .
Review 86:Restaurant area rather uninviting and menu looked dull. Did not eat there. The decor rather tired looking - could do with refreshing.
Review 87:Perfect location and views. Good and well appointed room Very clean.
Review 88:The location is a bit further away from Paihia than we originally expected - not close walking distance to Paihia. The bed was also absolutely awful, way too hard and you could tell they had simply pushed two beds together as you felt yourself constantly falling through the bed in the middle of the night.
Review 89:Good facilities and fantastic views of the beach
Review 90:This is the fourth time I have stayed this year. The a la carte menu is limited. I ordered the special which was not very nice. The buffet looked good perhaps this is where the focus is. I have always been asked to wait for a table in the restaurant although it is not full. The staff seem reluctant to seat you if you have not made a booking. I could understand this if it was full or busy. Overall service is a bit hit and miss. I decided to find somewhere a little more welcoming for breakfast.
Review 91:The rooms are lovely. Well appointed with a view.
Review 92:I booked two rooms but on checkin told that I had booked only one andthis had a double bed. This caused considerable embarrassment to myselfand lady overseas guest. Told I could upgrade to the last available roomthat had single beds I was obliged at the late hour to accept theupgrade. On unpacking I checked the confirmation from Booking Dot Comand sure enough two rooms had been confirmed. It occured to me that thesecond room may have been in my guests name and a recheck confirmed thisto be so. Guest moved to second room. Had I not double checked mybooking I would have been charged for a no show! The booking was in myname not my guests. The hotel staff were not overly concerned at theirmistake leading to my dissatisfaction and extra cost for the upgrade. Not impressed!
Review 93:Location close to town and points of interest
Review 94:Check in when you have to put money on your credit just in case you use ... Unusual, time consuming and annoying particularly after a long drive and your credit card facility's took multiple goes to work ... All in all not a great way to start off a stay
Review 95:Pillow cases and pillows seemed old and used. Water pressure in shower was extremely low. We had a suite with loads of space but not even a bowl or knife or coffee plunger. Bedding are not crisp and white but seemed over washed and at the end of its life. Fridge kept freezing everything even at lower settings. Staff seemed over worked and barely coping with full hotel.
Review 96:Good location
Review 97:Was very disappointed with buffet dinner, very poorly, for the price, would recommend to others to eat elsewhere, and to top of my mother was vommiting in the night??
Review 98:Loved the view, and pools fantastic?
Review 99:Staff in the restaurant didn't serve us. (It wasn't even busy) We asked and she bought menus but then never came back so we left and drove into town.
Review 100:Beautiful view from our room, peaceful location.
Review 101:The hotel is a little worn, more 3 star. Expected more from the room, including lack of wine in mini bar.
Review 102:Peaceful hotel in a nice location just out of Paihia. Staff were really friendly. Get a room with a water view if you can.
Review 103:The bridge which allows locals to access the hotel compounds
Review 104:The location. It's on a separate island which makes it elegant from others. More on privacy and it is on the heritage land of nz
Review 105:The radio wasnt working properly
Review 106:The Spa Pool as well as having the cold plunge pool right next to the spa ... Excellent The smoke area outside the room was excellent too
Review 107:The air con and ceiling fan in room was old and neither worked. We have stuck this in many of the rooms we have stayed in here over the years
Review 108:The stunning pool
Review 109:I booked 3 rooms for 3 couples. All the rooms has different facilities in terms of bed, bathroom and ventilation. 1 had a bad water jug, 2 of it had smaller beds compered to the 3rd one. The fan in 1 of the room worked only in one speed and made our sleep quite uncomfortable. In 1 the water pressure was so low. Didn't make sense booking in the same price for the 3 rooms when they all were so different.
Review 110:Not a bad experience but a mini bar was mentioned on the website but wasn't in the room, sometimes it's nice to have a bottle of water on hand that isn't chlorinated when you arrive in your room thirsty and tired.
Review 111:Comfort - clean room and nice and quiet, quick check in and check out. Lovely surroundings
Review 112:Toilet and safe was not working the 1st day only got fixed the following day. Told us we could move but had to stay in a 1 bed room (family of 4)
Review 113:Clean and lovely views
Review 114:Staff in restaurant very unprofessional. Restaurant decor very dated for a hotel resort. Pork belly meal was tasty but lacked another side. Room was noisey because of guests in hallway at night audible through unit door. Would stay elsewhere next time.
Review 115:Location. Pools
Review 116:Not really a bad experience, but the room temp was too warm for us, otherwise all good.
Review 117:Great service, and the staff were friendly and helpful... the food was good too!
Review 118:Not a bad experience but felt food was overpriced for what it was. Not enough waiting staff to cover conference attendees when dining. Little things missing like emergency shower cap, real milk option for lengthier stays. No in room coffee plunger. No massage service as advertised for entire stay.
Review 119:Scenery, grounds
Review 120:The bed was formed using 2 single beds joined together, so when you are at the joint, you can feel discomfort to the back. (I just recovered from lower lumbar injury)
Review 121:only in summer it can be a pain, no aircon only fans.. Bonus though the pool is open to 11pm so plenty of time to cool off before bed.. If you can request an upstairs room in the hibiscus wing you have the benifit on no noise, downstairs has a lovely deck area which goes onto the lawn which would be great if you had kids or wanted to chill on the deck, just be weary you may here a bit of traffic from above!
Review 122:Location is amazing, stayed here several times, it's our absolute favourite in the BOI Staff are great and there is a lovely buffet meal, a bit on the high side for but convenient for those not wanting to venture and relax.
Review 123:Expected mini bar and room service. It was a little more Budget then i remembered when i stayed year ago when it was THC but you are looking at a different level of custom and they are lucky to have such a beautiful hotel and site
Review 124:Very enjoyable stay.
Review 125:having purchased 50mb or 1hr wifi used 5mins checking and log off. Unable to log on again had to purchase another 50mb or lhr. not good
Review 126:staff and food was excellent
Review 127:The place is awesome the view, the position of the hotel, we walked to the Treaty Grounds. The rooms were top rate, the cleanliness was excellent. The staff were really professional and friendly.
Review 128:Water tasted terrible. $7.00 for bottle of water. Quite a hike from reception to my room. Shower had next to no water pressure. Although room had obviously been refreshed recently, a decent reno is required, as some of the fittings are quite dated.
Review 129:Good location and faultless, friendly and helpful staff. Very good restaurant.
Review 130:Waitress in restaurant forgetting things even though the place was quiet. No sky tv Having to pay for wifi Restaurant menu very limited - there appeared to be more in-room options.
Review 131:Receptionist was very pleasant. Free room upgrade to sea view.
Review 132:The restaurant was definitely under staffed. There were about 8 small tables occupied but only two waiting staff and probably not many in the kitchen, which resulted in a long wait for everyone and some mistakes made with some orders. The quality of the food was ok.
Review 133:The location and the hotel grounds are definitely the main assets. The room we had was fine, clean and comfortable.
Review 134:Heating wasnt the best , bathroom needs a good clean . Maybe new mattresses old ones have rips & holes starting to appear
Review 135:Location awesome , good size rooms .
Review 136:Check in - person that checked us in didn't explain they took a $50 bond. No pens in room so couldn't complete the survey as didn't have one on me.
Review 137:Great bed really comfortable
Review 138:Didnt like the price of food 27 $ for a breakfast buffet meal and a dezert cost 12 $ found 2 cockroahces runni g around in the room wdn first arrived
Review 139:Staff were awesome very friendly could not fault them
