Reviews for African Rock Lodge

Review 1:Very nice family-owned lodge in the middle of a wildlife estate. Lovely rooms, good breakfast and a great barbecue at night. Perfect for visits of Kruger or the Panorama Route.

Review 2:We would have prefered to have dinner at the lodge in stead of having to drive to the town.

Review 3:The lodge in a wild reserve is very peaceful and just what we needed.

Review 4:Everything! Great location and very helpful and nice people. The owners, Yvonne and Gerard, are wonderful persons, very helpful and kind. For a lonely traveller, this is a great added value! I will definitely come back with my friends.

Review 5:This was not a Lodge in the true sense of the word but rather a B&B. No dinner was available without prior arrangement which we were not aware of, so we had to drive to a restaurant. The en suite units were very dark and cluttered with cushions, ornaments etc making it difficult to find room to put our suitcases and toiletry bags down. The room did not give a fresh and crisp clean impression. The pathway from the rooms on the west side to the pub area was not level or suitable for elderly people

Review 6:The owner was very friendly and interesting to talk to when he served us at the bar in the evening

Review 7:A minor point, but I found the breakfast was a bit lacking. It was all processed meat and cheese although to be fair eggs were offered.

Review 8:We enjoyed our stay at the ARL and made the most of our time based on the good advice from the owners. Yvonne and Gerry were perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. I would recommend this lodge.

Review 9:The owner of the business treated guests like children Breakfast is a real joke. Very little effort is made to provide a cooked breakfast. Cereals, muffins, toast, cold meat.... Muffins not even hot OR fresh

Review 10:Very little. Bad attitude of owner (Yvonne) killed any and all that could be seem as likable. Decoration not too bad Name says "Africa Rock Lodge" but very little of "Arica Rock" is displayed. Africa styled mixed with plastic and paper flowers etc do not match and present a very odd feeling in the "bush"

Review 11:The owners of this lodge are beyond amazing! Their hospitality and welcoming atmosphere make The African Rock Lodge a most delightful place to holiday. The rooms are divine, with all the amenities you could possibly need.

Review 12:Location was great. Just by the town but isolated in a safe condo. Yvonne and Gerard did their best to make us feel at home and helped with reservations for attractions. Top choice if you want to explore Kruger and all attractions close to Hoedspruit. Great breakfast and braai.

Review 13:The unspilt beauty of this location in a wonderful nature conservation, the friendliness of its owners and staff, the cleanlinessand the refreshing swimming pool

Review 14:Yvonne and Gerard are outstanding hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed both our stays with them. The lodge is well set out and in a quiet part of Hodespruit close to everything. We will be back!

Review 15:Saying goodbye.

Review 16:Owners/Innkeepers, Gerard and Yvonne (and their faithful dog, Phoebe) were very gracious hosts. The rooms were comfortable and clean and everything was decorated in African motif. Our back porch looked out on the bush and we occassionally saw warthogs walking past, just a couple of yards (meters) away. They have a very cozy bar and outdoor seating by a fire pit and a small swimming pool. We opted to use Gerard and Yvonne for our tours while we were there, including an evening game drive, a trip to the Maholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and a hiking trip in Blyde River Canyon. They also took us and other guests to a few nice and very reasonable restaurants in the Hoedspruit area - Sleepers was a particular favorite. It was a real treat to sit by the fire with Gerard, Yvonne, and other guests, Brad and Jo from Australia and Jung and his son Juergen from Germany, now living in Dubai.

Review 17:an evening, night and breakfast, as if we had been invited to stay with friends. Excellent braai in the courtyard, very well equipped and tasteful decorated rooms, interesting talks about South African life, wildlife and culture. Gerard & Yvonne are wonderful hosts.

Review 18:This was a huge suprise as we had never been before and found the lodge on Booking.com. I can highly reccomend African Rock Lodge as the perfect place to stay when visiting this part of South Africa. The friendly owners have an immaculate attention to detail and service and the meals were absolutely delicious. As a person who travels all over the globe I can say this is one of the best places I have been!

Review 19:Dinner at lodge was a little expensive.

Review 20:Fantastic hosts, stunning atmosphere, peaceful surroundings.

Review 21:Warm welcome, friendly treatment and very helpful support for local activities.

Review 22:Needed a TV

Review 23:Everything!!

Review 24:Accommodating and friendly owners and staff. Always willing to help with advice etc. Always at your service.

Review 25:The most friendly owner - relaxing location- boutique hotel without the price tag .

Review 26:Good conversation, food.

Review 27:Kindess and helpfulness of owners, Gerard and Yvonne. Lovely quiet location but close enough to Hoedspruit to go to restaurants.

Review 28:None

Review 29:Great location and lovely proprietors. Couldn't do enough for you both at the property and on trips out

Review 30:Single bed matresses on a double bed base, should be double bed matress.

Review 31:The quietness and bush sounds especially at night

Review 32:Very nice and stylish rooms Nice setting in private park Friendly hosts

Review 33:It was a little bit dark in the room.

Review 34:The Room and the setting. It was so Beutiful.

Review 35:Nothing I can remember

Review 36:Hospitality of Yvonne and Gerard, Comfort, Cleanliness, Ambience, Friendliness, Breakfast,

Review 37:Yvonne and Gerhard are both great hosts, after a long drive from mozambique to hoedspruit they suprised us with a nice dinner to welcome us.

Review 38:Top hotel highly recommend

Review 39:there was not enough space for the suitcases

Review 40:everything

Review 41:Nothing

Review 42:Location facilities staff

Review 43:nothing

Review 44:Owners went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. Safe and secure location, could walk around the wild life estate. Rooms well appointed.

Review 45:owners terrific people - extremely friendly helpful. Dined with them both nights at local place. Lovely room. Good location

Review 46:We enjoy the hospitality and friendliness of Gert and Yvonne. They make our stay very pleasant. The room was great.

Review 47:Homely feeling/comfort away from home, but in the middle of nature, far away from the maddening crowd, yet so close to the town centre with various amenities.

Review 48:- a lot of (not really necessary) accessories in the rooms which leads to a feeling of narrowness in the room - staff should pay more attention to cleanliness (toothbrush glass was very dirty, several large spider webs in the bathroom)

Review 49:- location (possible to see warhogs and antelopes in direct proximity)

Review 50:Wifi connection was poor

Review 51:The rooms were fully equiped, beautiful and well spent on. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. In close proximity to Eastgate airport. Overall we had a lovely stay and would highly recommend this place.

Review 52:Yvonne and Gerard are so nice and welcoming, the best hosts I've ever met. The rooms are superb, the pool and the brai area are great. The location in the wildlife estate is ideal. This lodge is definitely a little gem!

Review 53:Loved the roomdecoration, the location right inside a wildlife estate. Rooms very clean, everything what you need is there and more. Yvonne and Gerard are the best hosts ever.

Review 54:There was nothing not to like!

Review 55:Staying at the African Rock Lodge was a real pleasure. Especially the owners made it an excellent part of our holiday. They were very friendly and helpful; I never met any hotel / B&B / lodge etc. owners that put so much effort in making things comfortable for the guest. The location is very nice (inside a wildlife estate and close to Kruger), room are nice and well equiped, and breakfast is excellent.

Review 56:The owners. The welcome by the owners, ready with a hot face-towel when I arrived. And their support with practical questions. The obvious love for their lodge.

Review 57:The hosts were super friendly and the breakfast was great. Everything inthe lodge is decorated safari style with love for details. The lodge isinside a wildlife estate where you can watch game on a private gamedrivewith your own car or at a beautiful waterhole.

Review 58:We stayed here for two nights before going on a self drive safari to Kruger National Park. The owners were very friendly and we had a good and relaxing time at the lodge. If we had any questions, the owners were more than happy to advise. The room was very clean and modern. The bedroom was a little small, but the bathroom was very big and had two wonderful showers and a bathtub. The internet connection was good and we even got signal in our room. The breakfast was sufficient with a choice of eggs, bacon etc. The location was inside the Wildlife Estate of Hoedspruit and was guarded all day, which made us feel very safe. The location was also convenient with a supermarket and an excellent restaurant in Hoedspruit (an old railway station) just outside the guarded area. It is less than one hour drive to both the Orpen and Phalaborwa gates into the Kruger National Park. This lodge provides good value for money and is recommended if you need a friendly and modern accommodation in the Hoedspruit district.

Review 59:Lighting in the rooms was a little dim.

Review 60:We stayed here for 2 nights. Yvonne and Gerard are great hosts, and a bit quirky. Gerard can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about South African car licence plates. The lodge itself is very cozy, with a bush decor. It's very clean, and housekeeping was in our room twice a day, including in the evening to put a chocolate on our pillow before bedtime. Breakfast was also great. Ask Yvonne for some air-fried chips/fries! We took a couple of tours with Gerard, one to Blyde River Canyon and the other to an animal rehabilitation centre. Both were great. We also took a game drive on their property, we saw giraffes, zebras, lots of antelope, etc. An additional tip, the wireless internet is now free for guests, even though some older literature you might find will say they charge for it.

Review 61:The friendly host and excellent food

Review 62:Room beautifull and comfortable but more space would have been a bonus.

Review 63:Individual attention of hosts to guests.

Review 64:- The hospitality - The comfort - The serenity - The location - The owners/hosts - The arrangements made to see the big 5 very close by

Review 65:Super hospitable hosts Wonderfully furnished rooms Amazing environment

Review 66:Lodge is still being renovated in some parts so bits look not quite finished

Review 67:Interesting rooms, great hosts
